San Francisco, <keyword id="10875" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IBM">IBM</keyword> is mulling to sell its <keyword id="10795783" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="watson-health-business">Watson Health business</keyword> that is generating nearly $1 billion in annual revenue but is not profitable. The <keyword id="6384660" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="wall-street-journal">Wall Street Journal</keyword> reported that IBM is exploring a potential sale of its <keyword id="6411673" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="watson">Watson</keyword> Health business, as CEO Arvind Krishna "moves to streamline the company and become more competitive in cloud computing". "Watson was one of IBM's highest-profile initiatives in recent years and a big bet on the growing healthcare sector, though results disappointed in part because physicians were hesitant to adopt artificial intelligence," the report said on Friday. "IBM is studying alternatives for the unit that could include a sale to a private-equity firm or industry player or a merger with a blank-check company," the report added, citing sources. IBM currently has a market value of $108 billion, way behind Cloud-computing rivals like AMAzon and <keyword id="10387" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword>. In its fourth quarter, cognitive applications revenue, which includes Watson Health, came to $1.5 billion, a decrease of 2 per cent year over year. IBM Watson was one of the "strategic imperatives" under former CEO Ginni Rometty. A weak cloud and cognitive software performance saw IBM shares sliding 6.6 per cent after the company missed Q4 revenue estimates, posting its fourth straight quarter of revenue decline. The Q4 (December 2020 quarter) sales totalled $20.4 billion, down 6 per cent (on-year) and slightly below the $20.63 billion consensus. Cloud and Cognitive Software sales dropped 5 per cent to $6.8 billion, below the $7.18 billion estimates. Last quarter, this segment was up 7 per cent. IBM has appointed Martin Schroeter as the Chief Executive Officer of the independent company that will be created following the separation of IBM's Managed Infrastructure Services business ï¿½NewCo'. NewCo will focus on the management and modernisation of IT infrastructure in every industry around the world. The previously announced separation is expected to occur by the end of 2021. IBM may sell  Watson Health business generating $1 billion annual revenue, says report

IBM said it is going to partner with seven state governments across the country to train over 200,000 girls in the eight to twelve years age bracket in STEM subjects for “new collar” jobs. The company aims to benefit nearly 4,000 mentors and 600,000 mentees, of which 500,000 will be women, via its AI-powered mentor platform, according to media reports. So far, the company has got 2,500 mentors onboard, including 300 company professionals, in collaboration with national Mentor of Change mission. As a part of the initiative, the company is also planning to start a two-year advanced diploma programme in emerging technology in partnership with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. According to the company’s statement, the program will be introduced in 100 Industrial Training Institute (ITIs) — including 50 ITIs dedicated to women. Apart from that, the company is also planning to roll out five-month internships under the program. Separately, the IT major has also collaborated with Kendriya Vidyalaya School to help math teachers with artificial intelligence platform “Teacher Advisor with Watson” that aims to train around 300,000 girls. Stressing on the gender disparity challenge, “We can see 100% jobs are going to change. You need more women in workforce. IBM’s AI platform Watson to mentor over a million Indian women for ‘new collar’ jobs

New Delhi, May 4 () Indian Council of Medical Research has deployed IBM's artificial intelligence tool Watson Assistant to expedite and simplify responses from testing to provide accurate and updated data on COVID-19, the IT company said on Monday.The virtual chat assistant will give responses based on the final guidelines issued by ICMR and also filter old rules that remain valid for handling tests, sample collection, diagnostics, data entry etc related to coronavirus cases.ICMR Director General Balram Bhargava said that it is critical to remain focused on testing, diagnosis and treatment of coronavirus patients in order to lower the growth curve.He said with the number of on-field testing teams expanding across the nation as part of India's COVID-19 measures, collaboration with IBM will help automate responses from the field and facilitate access to accurate and updated data on the coronavirus diagnostics and reporting."This will help augment our teams' response time and allow them to concentrate on priorities like developing and updating testing and treatment protocols and guidance for COVID-19," Bhargava said.Coronavirus cases in the country have increased to 42,533 till date and killed 1,373 people."Technology continues to play a significant role in India's fight against COVID-19, and it is crucial to evaluate and leverage the most effective solutions to support these initiatives. IBM India CTO pitches grocery shopping by recipes, virtual mirrors and green stores — here's what AI can provide in the post-COVID world

<keyword id="10875" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IBM">IBM</keyword> and Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A) are conducting a cognitive tech based challenge, ‘<keyword id="3665899" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cognitive-Entrepreneurship-Challenge">Cognitive Entrepreneurship Challenge</keyword>’ (CEC). 
 Under this challenge, students and <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword> will be trained via interactive workshops on cognitive-based API on Bluemix. They will build business solutions using IBM's cognitive platform – Bluemix, which is based on open standards and cloud to build, deploy, manage and run omni-channel applications like web and mobile, big data and other smart services. 
 The participants will be evaluated and mentored by the <keyword id="3665209" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ibm-india-watson">IBM India Watson</keyword> team. 
 
“Cognitive computing is fast augmenting human knowledge, capabilities and experience. In the case of rapidly digitizing Indian economy, there is vast untapped potential for creative applications of cognitive technologies by enterprises, entrepreneurs and changemakers,” said Prof Anish Sugathan, faculty of Business Policy, and the Masterplan faculty advisor at IIM-A.

NEW DELHI: International Business Machine (<keyword id="10875" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="IBM">IBM</keyword>) sees huge potential for its <keyword id="6411673" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Watson">Watson</keyword> supercomputer in the Indian market in the role of an advisor or helping businesses increase competencies, even as the company tests the scalability of the technology by using it internally. 
 
“Clearly there is desire. Now it’s up to us to get from that desire and interest to meaningful use cases that have business justification,” said Michelle Unger, worldwide head of sales for Watson Engagements at IBM, talking about the potential Indian market for Watson. 
 A lot is riding on Watson for IBM — it is a big part of chief executive officer Virginia Rometty’s turnaround plan for the company — which in January said it would <keyword id="47916" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="invest">invest</keyword> more than $1 billion on the supercomputer system. Watson, which uses cognitive technology, has the ability to store information and learn from its mistakes, much the same way as humans do. 
 
It shot to fame in 2011 when it beat the top contestants on the American game show “Jeopardy”, which involves contestants framing the question for a general knowledge clue provided in answer form. The technology services provider however, is now keen to make Watson commercially viable for customers around the world, and is taking it to developing countries such as India. 
 The focus areas in the country will not be “anything dramatically different” from their strategy worldwide, which includes the government, healthcare, financial sector, startups and telecom companies as potential customers, said Unger. Michelle Unger also did not rule out the possibility of taking this technology to traditional Indian information technology players and rivals such as <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> and Tata Consultancy Services. 
 
“I certainly see there’s a lot of efficiency we could bring to their processes using cognitive technology. And these efficiencies can either mean more profit, or make them more competitive,” Unger said. As an example, she said these companies could use Watson’s capabilities to manage their human resources helpdesk processes. 
 
One of Watson’s major selling points is that it can read and understand natural language, but currently works only in English. 
 Unger is confident it can be trained to understand the nuances and slang of Indian English , which will help it interact with customers in the country better. Watson has found application in studying and gathering information for curing cancer in the <keyword id="6356955" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="united-states">United States</keyword>. 
 In February, it also announced a 10-year initiative in Africa to help in healthcare, education, water and sanitation, human mobility and agriculture in the continent. IBM, which is facing stiff competition from nimbler rivals Amazon and <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword>, is now hosting Watson on the cloud to make it more accessible for its customers. 
 
With a workforce of over 400,000 as per its last annual report, does IBM not see fertile ground to test Watson’s ability? “You bet!” said Unger. Through a pilot project called “Watson on Watson” , IBM is encouraging its employees to ask anything about the technology, the different kinds of services available and also suggest further uses. 
 
It will be rolled out to the entire company at the end of June, said Michelle Unger. “And part of it is also allowing us to test the scalability (of the technology)… It is trainable, it’s something from which you can get a pretty short return on investment,” she added.

And <a href="http://abstracts.asco.org/199/AbstView_199_187558.html">in data presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting</a>, IBM Watson Health gave a snapshot of how it's playing out so far. The studies looked at concordance rates, or how often Watson for Oncology reached the same course of treatment as the cancer doctors at different cancer centers around the world. At <a href="http://www.manipalinternationalpatientcare.com/centers-of-excellence/manipal-comprehensive-cancer-centre/">Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Center</a> in India, for 112 cases of lung cancer, there was 96.4% concordance between Watson and the doctors. For 126 cases of colon cancer it was 81% of the time, and for 124 cases of rectal cancer cases were 92.7%. The concordance was in line with what IBM expected in those cases: If Watson and the docs agreed all the time, there wouldn't be much value for adding AI to the picture.But it was a bit off when it came to Watson evaluating 185 cases of gastric cancer in South Korea. There, the concordance <a href="http://abstracts.asco.org/199/AbstView_199_191277.html">was 49%</a>. Norden said that relates to the guidelines for gastric cancer being different in South Korea than at Memorial Sloan Kettering, the hospital where Watson for Oncology was trained. The data presented at ASCO are among the first that IBM Watson Health has published in peer-reviewed academic journals. And while it sets the stage for what artificial intelligence can do to help doctors treat patients with cancer, many still have lingering questions.The biggest yet-to-be-answered question: Can using AI to determine cancer treatment actually extend patients' lives compared to oncologists alone determining their treatments?Andrew Norden, the deputy chief health officer at IBM Watson Health told Business Insider that the concordance data isn't "the ultimate endpoint we're interested in," though it was the first they could get to relatively quickly.
