Homegrown micro-blogging platform <keyword id="3518161" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="koo" source="Orion">Koo</keyword> on Tuesday said that it has laid off 15 employees, or 5 per cent of its workforce, and not 40 as earlier reported in the media. In a fresh statement to IANS, the Twitter rival said that 15 positions "have been made redundant or removed due to performance issues". "This is completely aligned with the industry standards of hiring and retrenchment. At the same time, Koo continues to hire talent in its monetisation, product and engineering teams," a company spokesperson said. The additional hires, said Koo, will help it gear up for the next phase of growth and monetisation. Aprameya Radhakrishna, Co-founder and CEO, Koo, was recently in London for an industry event for Indian entrepreneurs. The company spokesperson said that she "did not meet any funders or high net worth individuals (HNIs) in London and did not engage in any fundraising activity". Koo has raised $44.1 million to date. The company said it is "well capitalised, is focused on growth and enhancing innovation, driving digital inclusion and attaining 100 million downloads". Launched in March 2020, Koo is currently available in 10 languages -- Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Assamese, Bengali and English. According to the platform, it has over 45 million downloads and is actively leveraged by 7,000 high-profile people from across the spectrum. Virat Kohli to step down as India’s T20 captain, says he had ‘immense workload’ over the years

New Delhi, July 13 (IANS) Google CEO Sundar Pichai on Monday announced a Google for India digitisation fund through which, the company will invest Rs 75,000 crore or approximately $10 billion over the next five to seven years to help India go digital. "We will do this through a mix of equity investment, partnerships and an operational infrastructure ecosystem in India. This is a reflection of our confidence in the future of India and its digital economy," Pichai said during the Google for India virtual conference. The investment will focus on four areas important to India's digitisation-- first enabling affordable access to information to every Indian in their own language. "Second, building new products and services that are deeply relevant to India's unique needs. Third, empowering businesses to continue or embark on digital transformation. And fourth, leveraging technology and Artificial Intelligence for social good in areas like health, agriculture and education," the Google CEO said. New Delhi, July 6 (IANS) What if your boss or senior messages you on Facebook and asks for money telling you that his wife is in hospital and seriously ill? Chances are that you might transfer the said amount as early as possible considering the seriousness of the situation. Now, in an interesting case of cyber fraud, Delhi Police has arrested a man who posed as the victim's senior by creating a fake Facebook ID and then contacting the victim and asking for immediate transfer of Rs 60,000 into his Paytm account to get his wife treated in hospital. The victim transferred Rs 58,000. "The matter came to light when the complainant gave a call to his senior inquiring about the health of his wife in a goodwill gesture. However, he was shocked to know that no such money request was made by his senior on Facebook. It was then he realised that he had been duped. We later registered a case at Burari police station and started the investigation," said DCP North Monika Bhadwaj. During the course of investigation technical surveillance was mounted and on the basis of surveillance the accused was zeroed in and his location was found to be in Lohawan, Mathura (UP). Delhi Police then raided several places in Mathura and the accused Ravi Kumar was arrested. During interrogation, accused Ravi Kumar disclosed that he belongs to village Devasaras, which is known as hub of OLX/PAYTM cheaters, police said. He used to have a mobile repairing shop. He came in contact with one Kanhaiya, who was actively involved in the OLX/PAYTM frauds. He started working with Kanhaiya. He obtained a SIM card on a fake ID and opened a Paytm wallet. He created a fake Facebook ID of the victim's senior and sent a money request to the complainant. The accused further disclosed that one of his associates Khalid used to bring Paytm wallets of other village boys into which he transferred the fraud amount. Khalid was hired by him to withdraw the said amount and in return the accused shared 10 per cent of the total amount withdrawn with Khalid who is still absconding. --IANS zaz/kr

Cyber fraud dupes man posing as his boss on Facebook

New Delhi, June 2 (IANS) Calling the production-linked incentive scheme a "game changer", industry body India Cellular and Electronics Association on Tuesday said that the scheme will help boost growth in mobile phone manufacturing in India as well as meet exports targets assigned under the National Policy on Electronics (NPE 2019). "This scheme is a game changer for the nation and the industry," Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman, ICEA, said in a statement. Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad on Tuesday launched three major schemes to boost manufacture of electronics in the country. The minister launched the Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) for large-scale electronics manufacturing, Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS), and Modified Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC 2.0) Scheme, which were approved by the Union Cabinet in March. The three schemes would entail an outlay of about Rs 50,000 crore. According to the IT Ministry, India's production of electronics grew from $29 billion in 2014 to $70 billion in 2019. The growth in mobile phone manufacturing in particular has been remarkable during this period. From just two mobile phone factories in 2014, India now has become the second largest mobile phone producer in the world, the IT Ministry said. Production of mobile handsets in 2018-19 reached 29 crore units worth Rs 1.70 lakh crore from just six crore units worth Rs 19,000 crore in 2014. The three new schemes unveiled on Tuesday are expected to attract substantial investments, increase production of mobile phones and their components to around Rs 10 lakh crore by 2025 and generate around five lakh direct and 15 lakh indirect jobs, the ministry said. --IANS gb/na

Mumbai, July 7 (IANS) Hiranandani Group subsidiary Yotta Infrastructure on Tuesday unveiled a gigantic data centre building, Yotta NM1, in Mumbai as the company plans to spend about Rs 3,500 crores in next three years on data centre parks which will also come up in cities like New Delhi and Chennai, besides Navi Mumbai. With proximity to Mumbai and Pune, Yotta NM1 Data Center is located in the 600-acre Hiranandani Fortune City in Panvel. Yotta NM1 is first of the five data center buildings coming up at this Integrated Yotta Data Centre Park, which, once fully built, will have an overall capacity of 30,000 racks and 250 MW power, Yotta Infrastructure said. At 820,000 sq. ft, 7,200 racks, 50 MW of power and 4 redundant self-owned fiber paths connecting the data centre to national highways, the Yotta NM1 data centre is capable of hosting global Cloud, content and OTT operators besides the mission-critical applications of enterprises and governments, the company said. "This particular data center is a powerful statement of intent that India is rising high in the quest of data security, data use and data innovation," Union IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad was quoted as saying in a statement. "For the success of Digital India, we must become a big global data refinery -- data cleaning, data processing, data innovation and research -- and all of this will need to be done keeping in mind data privacy laws. We shall never compromise on the data sovereignty of India," he said. Besides Navi Mumbai, Yotta is also developing similar sized giant data centre parks at Chennai and New Delhi. Mumbai, June 8 (IANS) Soon, you may be able to withdraw cash from an <keyword id="48577" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ATM">ATM</keyword> without touching any part of the machine. AGS Transact Technologies, a provider of cash and digital payment solutions and automation technology, on Monday said it has successfully developed and tested a touchless ATM solution in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. The 'contactless' solution, currently under demo at interested banks, enables a customer perform all the steps required to withdraw cash from an ATM using the mobile app itself. The customer simply has to scan the QR code displayed on the ATM screen and follow the directions on their respective bank's mobile application. This includes entering the amount and mPIN required to dispense the cash from the ATM machine. According to the company, the QR code feature makes cash withdrawals quicker and more secure, and negates the chances of compromising the ATM Pin or card skimming. "The new Touchless ATM solution is an extension of the flagship QR Cash solution which ensures safety of the users and will provide a seamless cash withdrawal experience with enhanced security," said Ravi B. Goyal, Chairman and MD, AGS Transact Technologies Ltd. With minimum investment, the banks can enable this solution for their ATM networks by upgrading the existing software. AGSTTL has so far installed, maintained and managed a network of over 72,000 ATMs across the country and also provides customised solutions to leading banks. San Francisco, June 19 (IANS) Microsoft has acquired <keyword id="9426864" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="adrm-software">ADRM Software</keyword>, a leading provider of large-scale industry data models, which are used by large companies worldwide as information blueprints, for an undisclosed sum. North Carolina-based ADRM's industry data models have been built and refined over decades for business-critical analytics. "An industry data model enables organizations to more holistically capture and define business concepts, refine and integrate processes, and build interoperability in their ecosystem," Microsoft said in a statement on Thursday. According to Ravi Krishnaswamy, CVP, Azure Global Industry, Microsoft has been investing in the power of data and artificial intelligence (AI) to continuously innovate, influence and enhance customer experience and partner growth. "Data and AI are the foundation of modern technological innovation, yet businesses today struggle to unlock the full value data has to offer as fragmented data estates hinder digital transformation," said Krishnaswamy. Combining comprehensive industry models from ADRM with limitless storage and compute from Azure allows for the creation of the intelligent data lake where data from multiple lines of business can be harmonized together more quickly. "Together with Microsoft Azure, these capabilities will be delivered at scale, enabling our customers to accelerate digital progress, and reduce risk in a variety of major initiatives," said the company.

In a tweet, the minister said: "Significant boost to Make in India! Apple has started manufacturing iPhone 11 in India, bringing a top-of-the-line model for the first time in the country". Assembling the iPhones under the 'Make in India' initiative will help the company avoid the 22 per cent tax on its imported phones as per local manufacturing norms. This news comes at a time when the Indian government has also started an initiative to increase manufacturing in the country. Apple is reportedly seeking to shift roughly a fifth of existing China-based output to India. Foxconn is also planning to invest up to $1 billion to expand its India operations. Pegatron, the second-largest iPhone assembler after Foxconn, is also reportedly planning to invest in the country. Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad recently exhorted the electronics industry to explore the new opportunities that are arising out of adversity and make the country the global hub of electronics manufacturing. During a meeting with electronics industry associations, chambers and prominent industry players, Prasad asked the electronics industry to take advantage of the opportunity and new schemes notified by the ministry, attract global investment and strengthen the sector.
