<p>He talks about it all the time in our office. So, being the good employees and friends that we are, we handed him a <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> S III. It has a 4.8-inch screen.</p>
<p>What did he do with the S III? Thank us? Stop complaining about the small screen on his <keyword id="6354606" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="iPhone">iPhone</keyword>? Nope! He just let it sit there.</p>
<p>Why? He's a creature of habit. He had no desire to learn Android. He likes his iPhone operating system and doesn't want to learn a new system.</p>
<p>His strategy, instead, to get a bigger smartphone is to complain loudly, and often, about <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> not making a 4.8-inch iPhone. He often veils it behind the notion of analysis of Apple's business. Which is what he did today.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/big-screen-iphone-delayed-until-2014-2013-2">Blodget says Apple is hosed if it doesn't make a bigger iPhone</a> as soon as possible. He believes that Samsung has reached parity with the iPhone and therefore Apple's core business — selling iPhones — is in peril if it doesn't make a bigger phone.</p>
<p>A bigger iPhone from Apple would be nice for some people like Blodget. But, screen size is not going to make or break Apple.</p>
<p><strong>Apple's iPhone franchise is at risk because of pricing and distribution, not screen size.</strong></p>
<p>In the United States, where the iPhone has price equality with big Android phones, and distribution on all the major carriers, it is winning in sales. Kantar shows <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/iphone-accounts-for-51-percent-of-smartphone-sales-2013-1">Apple had 51 percent of new U.S. smartphone sales last quarter</a>. comScore also reported that <a href="http://www.comscore.com/layout/set/popup/Insights/Press_Releases/2013/2/comScore_Reports_December_2012_U.S._Smartphone_Subscriber_Market_Share">Apple beat Samsung in U.S. smartphone sales</a> in the three month period ending in December.</p>
<p>And it's not just during the quarter of the <keyword id="530942" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="iPhone-5">iPhone 5</keyword> launch. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apples-iphone-market-share-in-the-us-2012-7">Carrier numbers from July tell the same story</a>.</p>
<p>If screen size was really a problem for Apple, then it would be getting trounced in the U.S.</p>
<p>Here's more evidence screen size isn't the issue: On Apple's earnings call, management said it had trouble meeting demand for the iPhone 4, which has a relatively tiny 3.5-inch screen. If people truly hated small screens they would skip the iPhone 4 and buy an Android with a big screen that costs the same amount.</p>
<p>Outside of the U.S. Apple is losing because it's not a level playing field. Elsewhere in the world, carriers don't subsidize the cost. So, the iPhone is selling for $600-$800, versus $300-$600 or less for Android phones.</p>
<p>There's another problem internationally. At Goldman Sachs' technology conference this week, Tim Cook pointed out that the iPhone is only available on 50% of the world's carriers. That means Apple is missing out on half the market.</p>
<p>This again is a pricing problem. A lot of those carriers don't want to agree to Apple's terms for subsidies. They also don't want to give Apple as much control as it wants.</p>
<p>If Apple really wants to take market share, then it needs to get on more carriers and sell a less expensive phone. The screen size doesn't matter.</p>
<p>Selling a cheaper phone presents its own problems for Apple. It means Apple's sales and profits are going to take a hit. And its phenomenal growth will come crashing down.</p>
<p>These are the real problems Apple has to confront, not whether or not it should make a bigger iPhone.</p>
<p>Because, while a bigger iPhone would be nice, the market has already shown that it's not make or break for Apple.</p>

Here's Apple's REAL iPhone Problem (Hint: It's Not About Screen Size)

Well, it might be time for the relationship to work in reverse.</p>
<p>Apple has to copy Samsung's big phone style if it wants to capture the next phase of smartphone growth, suggests Topeka Capital analyst Brian White.</p>
<p>White has been on a tour of Asian suppliers this week.</p>
<p>This morning he reports, "our discussions this week in Taipei and China continue to highlight the need for Apple to launch a larger-sized <keyword id="6354606" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="iPhone">iPhone</keyword> to cater to the Asian market," adding, "Essentially, we are being told that the minimum size needed by Apple is a 4.5-inch display on the iPhone; however, a 5-inch to 5.5-inch would be optimal."</p>
<p>Apple made the iPhone 5 taller last year, extending it to 4-inches. It's a nice change of pace from the 3.5-inch screen that was standard on the first five-iPhones Apple released.</p>
<p>But compared to some of the most popular Android phones, the iPhone 5 can feel a bit cramped.</p>
<p>Initially mocked when they came out, the big smartphones from Samsung are slowly gaining acceptance. The 5.5-inch Galaxy Note II looks and feels goofy when making phone calls, but the truth is that phone calls are rarely made on smartphones nowadays.</p>
<p>Since your smartphone is basically a mini-PC, more screen is better.</p>
<p>Apple has done very well against Samsung and its big screen phones. Last quarter, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apples-iphone-problems-have-nothing-to-do-with-screen-size-2013-2">3.5-inch iPhone 4S outsold Samsung's 4.8-inch S III</a>.</p>
<p>The concern is that Apple has largely captured all the growth in developed markets with the iPhone. It now has to tackled places like China and India. To win those markets, it may need a different pricing and product strategy. </p>
<p>Topeka's White is one of the most bullish Apple analysts out there. He has a 12-month price target of $888.</p>

<p>A couple of years ago, <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> made the decision to build a critically important new product, the <keyword id="530942" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="iPhone-5">iPhone 5</keyword>, with a relatively small screen.</p>
<p>This decision, combined with the time it took Apple to release the phone--<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-iphone-problem-2012-7">the iPhone 5 arrived about 15 months after many Apple observers expected it to appear</a>--contributed to Apple losing its lead in the global smartphone market.</p>
<p>By the time pictures of the as-yet-unreleased iPhone 5 began to leak onto the Internet last summer, Apple's biggest competitor, Samsung, had already launched a well-received phone with a much bigger screen: The Galaxy S III.</p>
<p>In comparison to the Galaxy, the early photos of the iPhone 5 <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/if-the-iphone-5-really-looks-like-this-apple-may-be-screwed-2012-7">made the iPhone 5 look disappointingly small and ordinary</a>.</p>
<p>When Apple officially launched the iPhone 5 last fall, the company argued that the iPhone 5's screen size was the "right size," because it was the only size that allowed the phone to be held comfortably in one hand.</p>

<p>That argument won over some consumers, but many other buyers decided they preferred Samsung's bigger screen. And that and other feature comparisons led <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/consumer-reports-iphone-5-2013-1">Consumer Reports to rank the iPhone 5 merely the <em>third-best</em> of the top smartphones</a>, behind Samsung's Galaxy and an LG phone based on Google's Android platform.</p>
<p>What this meant was that, after five years of dominating the global smartphone market, Apple had finally lost its lead.</p>
<p>Because the hyper-growth in the smartphone market had already shifted to price-conscious emerging markets, where most consumers cannot afford to pay $600 for a phone (and there are few carrier subsidies)--and because Apple missed much of this growth by not offering a cheaper phone--Apple also rapidly began to lose global smartphone market share.</p>
<p>So that brings us to today.</p>
<p>The iPhone is still Apple's most important product by a mile.</p>
<p>In addition to generating about half of Apple's revenue, the iPhone also likely generates well more than half of Apple's profit.</p>
<p>The iPhone, in other words, is directly responsible for Apple's astoundingly high profit margin and even more astounding ~$40 billion of annual profit.</p>
<p>To regain its mojo in the stock market--and its halo of invincibility and superiority with consumers--Apple needs to regain its mojo in the smartphone market.</p>
<p>Specifically, Apple needs to once again leapfrog competitors that, over the past five years, have finally caught up to it.</p>
<p>There has been hope in some circles that Apple's next iPhone model, a big-screened version described as the "<keyword id="1750147" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="iPhone-Maxi">iPhone Maxi</keyword>," as well as the launch of a cheaper iPhone model, would help it do that.</p>
<p>For those holding on to this hope, one report from earlier this week was not encouraging.</p>
<p>An analyst named Peter Misek of Jefferies reported that Apple had wanted to release a forthcoming big-screened iPhone this year, but that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apples-48-inch-iphone-6-wont-be-coming-until-june-2014-says-jefferies-2013-2">manufacturing problems have forced the company to push back the launch until 2014</a>.</p>
<p>Specifically, reports BI's Jay Yarow, Misek says that Apple wanted to launch the larger model in October. But Apple's screen suppliers were not able to manufacture enough screens in that timeframe:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Apple's iPhone uses a technology called "in-cell," which essentially meshes the touch screen with the glass screen into one thin display. Its partners can't get good enough yields making those displays bigger to launch the iPhone 6 this year.</p>
<p>If Misek's report is accurate (no guarantees, obviously--and given the steady stream of often-inaccurate reports about Apple's future products, it's best to regard it as a rumor), this is a major setback for Apple.</p>

<p>Samsung is currently gearing up for the launch of its next version of the Galaxy phone, which is expected this spring.</p>
<p>The next-generation Galaxy will likely have a screen that is as big or bigger than the current Galaxy S III. Samsung expects the phone to be so popular that it is reportedly gearing up to make <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-is-planning-an-enormous-launch-for-the-s4-2013-2">100 million of them this year</a>. And it is planning to<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-is-planning-an-enormous-launch-for-the-s4-2013-2"> launch the phone with a massive marketing blitz.</a></p>
<p>If Samsung does launch the new Galaxy this spring, and Apple can't launch its own new phone until next year, Samsung may have as long as 9-12 months to market and sell a new phone that many consumers will consider obviously superior to Apple's iPhone before Apple is even in the market with a big-screened phone.</p>
<p>(Apple fans may cling to the argument that the bigger phones don't fit comfortably in one hand, but lots of consumers don't appear to be bothered by this. Many iPhone 5 owners--including this one--are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-has-to-make-an-iphone-with-a-bigger-screen-2013-2">envious of the size of the Galaxy screen whenever they see one</a>. And even diehard Apple fans have become obsessed with the idea of Apple launching a bigger iPhone, with some creating <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/big-screen-iphone-2013-2">beautiful renderings of what such a phone might look like</a>.)</p>
<p>If that happens, it will seem to many consumers as though, in the space of a few years, Apple has gone from having a year-long lead over all competitors in the smartphone market, to being a year behind.</p>
<p>For a company that is as dependent on the iPhone and iPhone profits as Apple is, that would be devastating.</p>
