The bank projects that, in 2025, vehicles with internal combustion engines will comprise 69.6% of the global light vehicle market, with full and mild hybrids taking 22.8% of the market, plug-in hybrids taking 1.4%, and fully-electric vehicles taking 6.3%.If JPMorgan is correct, both hybrid and fully-electric vehicle adoption will experience significant growth in the next seven years, but hybrids will grow at a faster rate. Ryan Brinkman, an automotive equity research analyst at JPMorgan and one of the report's co-authors, told Business Insider via email that while hybrids are less efficient than fully-electric vehicles, they have a major cost advantage that should continue through 2025.That's true on a global scale, but some governments provide incentives that help to level the playing field between hybrid and fully-electric vehicles. China offers <a href="https://www.eesi.org/articles/view/comparing-u.s.-and-chinese-electric-vehicle-policies">tax breaks and subsidies</a> for fully-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles, but not for mild or full hybrids. JPMorgan projects that in 2025, fully-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles will account for 12% of China's total auto sales, while full and mild hybrids will account for just 2%.But in the United States, the Trump Administration has said it will <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ap-trump-team-wants-to-roll-back-obama-era-mileage-standards-2018-8">roll back</a> fuel economy standards, which means automakers will face less immediate pressure to make their fleets more efficient. As a result, they'll be able to lean more heavily on hybrids to meet those standards, Brinkman said. JPMorgan has a surprising prediction about how EV sales will stack up against hybrids by 2025

And he's doing it with 3D printing.
The car he's developed is the Urbee 2, a two-seat, three-wheel hybrid.
Thanks to its big windows and teardrop shape (which gives it an excellent coefficient of drag), it looks like a vehicle out of "Minority Report."
"Printing" the Urbee 2 (which takes about 2,500 hours, <a href="http://www.wired.com/autopia/2013/02/3d-printed-car/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+wired%2Findex+%28Wired%3A+Top+Stories%29#.US3uj58WB0U.hackernews">according to Wired</a>) makes it lighter, and not only because it is made of ABS plastic (except the engine and base chassis, which are metal).
The <keyword id="584695" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="prototype">prototype</keyword> weighs less than 1,200 pounds. In comparison, a Smart car weighs just over 1,800 pounds. Because an electric motor will handle all acceleration up to 40 mph, the prototype's engine only has to produce a measly 10 horsepower.
A big advantage of 3D printing is that it minimizes the importance of economies of scale, so small numbers of cars can be produced at reasonable cost. And if the team wants to make a change in the design, it does not have to change a complex assembly process, just a bit of code.
The Urbee 2 may sound like a dream, but Kor is confident. He plans to one day drive from San Francisco to New York on 10 gallons of gas, he <a href="http://www.wired.com/autopia/2013/02/3d-printed-car/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+wired%2Findex+%28Wired%3A+Top+Stories%29#.US3uj58WB0U.hackernews">said in an interview with Wired</a>:
We’re trying to prove without dispute that we did this drive with existing traffic. We’re hoping to make it in Google [Maps'] time, and we want to have the Guinness book of world records involved.

This Futuristic City Car Will Be Made With 3D Printing

The latest generation of the Sonata looks very much like its predecessor, but it has a few touches that make the car a true step up.
Most of those are under the hood, but others are cosmetic.
In that latter category is a particularly smart, simple upgrade: The wheels look a lot better.
Chris Hosford, Hyundai's executive director of corporate communications, told Business Insider those little changes are surprisingly hard to get approved.
But, he said, they make a big difference to American buyers. A lot of factors go into choosing a new car, and one of the most important — along with price, practicality, and performance — is what the car looks like.
Hyundai has made a hybrid that has solid EPA-rated fuel mileage (38 mpg city and highway combined), drives nicely, and will cost less than $26,000.
Thanks to a thought process that didn't skip the details, the new Sonata has the looks to match.

One Little Change Makes A Big Difference In Hyundai's New Hybrid Sonata

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11897348" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="toyota" source="Orion">Toyota</keyword> has sold too many electric and <keyword id="14500799" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hybrid-vehicles" source="Orion">hybrid vehicles</keyword> to qualify for the $7,500 federal tax credit. </li><li>Electrified Toyota and Lexus vehicles will get more expensive for consumers as the credit phases out. </li></ul>Anyone in the market for a plug-in Toyota vehicle had better act fast.The carmaker is set to be booted from a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-tax-credit-2021-electric-car-7500-federal-30d-explained-2021-8">federal program</a> that offers up to a $7,500 tax credit to buyers of certain electric and hybrid vehicles. That means highly efficient Toyota and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lexus-ux-250h-review-hybrid-price-250-suv-ev-specs-2022-2">Lexus</a> models will effectively get thousands more expensive starting in October. <a href="https://www.irs.gov/businesses/plug-in-electric-vehicle-credit-irc-30-and-irc-30d">The program</a> was established in 2010 to incentivize purchases of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cheapest-electric-car-affordable-kia-ford-chevy-hyundai-nissan-2022-6">pure-electric</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rav4-toyota-plug-in-hybrid-first-drive-review-suv-mpg-2020-10">plug-in hybrid vehicles</a>, which have bigger batteries than traditional hybrids and can drive significant distances without using gas. Carmakers are disqualified from the program once they sell 200,000 eligible vehicles in the US, which Toyota did last quarter, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-07-01/toyota-runs-out-of-us-tax-credits-for-evs-joining-tesla-and-gm#xj4y7vzkg">Bloomberg</a> first reported.Toyota won't be kicked out of the program overnight. Instead, its credits will phase out gradually over a year-long period. Tax credits for Toyota's eligible vehicles will be cut in half starting on October 1, then halved again six months later on April 1. Buyers won't be able to get any reduction to their tax bill for Toyota vehicles bought after September 30, 2023. Currently, <a href="https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/taxevb.shtml">three 2022-model-year Toyota and Lexus vehicles</a> qualify for the program. Buyers of the Toyota RAV4 Prime and Lexus NX plug-in hybrids can get $7,500 back at tax time. The Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid is eligible for a $4,502 credit. (Vehicles with a larger battery capacity qualify for a higher credit.)Toyota's new electric SUV, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/toyota-unveils-new-electric-suv-bz4x-15-models-by-2025-name2021-4">the BZ4X</a>, isn't widely available yet and the government doesn't list it among eligible models. Before Toyota, only two automakers — Tesla and General Motors — met the 200,000-unit threshold. Ford and Nissan are expected to be next. Automakers are lobbying Congress to rework the credit and make it last longer. Toyota, GM, Ford, and Stellantis <a href="https://pressroom.toyota.com/toyota-statement-on-customer-tax-credits-for-battery-electric-vehicles/">urged the US government</a> in June to get rid of the 200,000-vehicle cap, arguing that making the credits more widely available would accelerate adoption of EVs in a time when supply-chain difficulties are making them more expensive to produce. Instead, they recommended a "sunset date set for a time when the EV market is more mature."But the prospect of a more generous tax credit is looking bleak.Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wapo-manchin-wont-support-new-climate-spending-tax-hikes-2022-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">opposes measures in President Joe Biden's spending agenda</a> aimed at curbing climate change, including a plan to boost the EV tax credit to $12,500 for union-made American cars, effectively stopping that plan dead in the water. Manchin has also suggested nixing the existing $7,500 incentive, per <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/12/climate/electric-vehicle-tax-credits-manchin.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The New York Times</a>.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Hybrid sales are booming in the US. </li><li>Once dismissed as a "phase," many drivers are now choosing them over EVs.</li></ul>Hybrids are having a moment.Sales of partially battery-powered vehicles, once ridiculed as a <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1553173389199785985">"phase"</a> by the likes of Elon Musk, are increasing even as EVs stutter, with hybrid sales growing by 50% in the first two months of the year, while EV sales grew 13% in that time, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/business/autos/hybrid-car-sales-boom-b579bf21">according to</a> research site Edmunds.The booming popularity of hybrids has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/toyota-hybrid-cars-ev-sales-growth-prius-bz4x-2024-2">benefited companies like Toyota</a> who have hedged their bets on EVs and continued to invest in their hybrid lineups.Other auto companies are following Toyota's lead, with General Motors pledging to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gm-hybrids-plan-good-for-car-dealers-and-shopper-2024-1">sell hybrids again in North America</a> and Ford delaying its latest electric SUV to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ford-pulled-back-on-evs-focused-on-hybrids-paid-off-2024-4">focus on its own hybrid lineup</a>.Even Tesla, which famously doesn't sell hybrids and is unlikely to do so anytime soon, is taking notice. In his latest earnings report, the company <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-blames-hybrids-for-lower-sales-2024-4">blamed demand for hybrid vehicles</a> for depressing global EV sales."The EV adoption rate globally is under pressure, and a lot of other auto manufacturers are pulling back on EVs and pursuing plug-in hybrids instead," said CEO Elon Musk in an earnings call."We believe this is not the right strategy, and electric vehicles will ultimately dominate the market," he added.Business Insider spoke to hybrid owners, experts and industry execs to discover why hybrids are gaining popularity. <h2 id="af74f03e-f0cb-4d4f-8a61-2ca0833223f8">Lack of affordable EVs</h2>Nick O'Brien, who teaches auto tech at Jefferson Community College in Kentucky, took delivery of a hybrid 2024 Ford Maverick in February, and told Business Insider he was more than happy with his purchase.He said the hybrid perfectly balanced excellent fuel economy with a reduced environmental impact."I love it — it's very quiet, very smooth, and more than double the fuel economy of my previous vehicle," he said.O'Brien told BI that he believes EVs are the future, but the lack of affordable options meant that he decided to buy a hybrid instead for his next vehicle."The biggest barrier for me personally is the cost of a new EV," he said. "I think there just aren't many EV options yet that regular people (as opposed to rich people) can afford."The lack of affordable EVs has been cited as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electrc-vehicle-demand-problem-affordability-expense-price-cost-2023-10">one of the biggest reasons why drivers are reluctant to go electric</a>.Hybrids, which tend to be more affordable than pure EVs, appear to be reaping the benefits.Buyers paid $42,500 for hybrids in November 2023 on average compared with $60,500 for electric vehicles and $47,500 for gas cars, according to data from Edmunds <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/17/business/hybrid-cars-electric-vehicles.html">reported by the New York Times</a>."The additional costs associated with fully electric vehicles is definitely higher than hybrids," Mark Singer, a senior transportation analyst at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, told BI."A lot of hybrid electric vehicles now are not far off from their internal combustion engine alternatives. So I think that the lower incremental costs associated with hybrids at this point are driving some interest towards hybrid versus fully electric vehicles," he added.<h2 id="99ed0829-d858-4969-b375-e264f3970cfd">Soaring gas prices</h2>Singer said that gas prices, which have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/hist/LeafHandler.ashx?n=pet&amp;s=emm_epm0_pte_nus_dpg&amp;f=m">remained high since the pandemic in the US</a>, could also be having an impact on consumers' decision to opt for more fuel-efficient vehicles versus gas versions. "What we've seen historically is that when gas prices rise, hybrid electric vehicle price or acquisitions rise as well," he told BI."Since we came out of the pandemic period, gas prices have seen an increase and I think that's probably a significant reason why hybrid electric vehicles have grown in popularity over the last couple of years," he added.<h2 id="5cc0e6a0-dfd4-4147-bf9a-040ac5319f05">Charging hurdles</h2>One of the big winners of the latest hybrid craze is Toyota, which has taken a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/toyota-hybrid-cars-ev-sales-growth-prius-bz4x-2024-2">more skeptical approach to EVs</a> than many of its rivals.The Japanese carmaker beat out Tesla in a recent survey charting <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-demand-still-strong-despite-slowdown-hybrids-survey-2024-1">most the brands most considered by EV shoppers</a>, despite releasing only one battery electric car in the US. Toyota vice president of sales, Jeff Buchanan, told Business Insider that customers are now looking for a choice between hybrids, EVs, and combustion engines, and that Toyota was reaping the benefits of having options in "virtually every segment.""With hybrids now that there's no compromises anymore — they're super efficient, they're powerful, the styling is great," he said.Toyota is expecting around 40% of its total US sales to be in hybrids this year, Buchanan said, with sales of partially and fully electrified vehicles up 70% in the first four months of the year.He described the relative affordability of hybrids as a "huge" factor swaying consumers towards hybrids, especially as interest rates have risen over the past few years — but added that lingering concerns over charging were also putting customers off from going fully electric."There's no doubt that for some people a concern," Buchanan said."There's just not enough public charging out there to make all customers comfortable with it, and I do think that probably is driving more customers back towards hybrids and plug-in hybrids," he added. Singer agreed, pointing to affordability and charging as the biggest factors swaying consumers from taking the plunge and buying a pure EV."Those are the two issues that are proving the biggest barriers to adoption," he said.With neither barrier an issue for hybrids, it seems that the hybrid boom is unlikely to die down anytime soon.

Hybrid sales are booming — here's why drivers are buying them over EVs

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Sales growth for hybrid cars is outpacing growth for electric vehicles this year.</li><li>Ford is one automaker reaping the benefits, with demand for its Maverick truck spiking.</li></ul>It's shaping up to be a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hybrids-more-popular-than-evs-toyota-ford-tesla-cars-electric-2024-3">comeback year for hybrid cars</a> — and that's partly because they're now nearly as good as their conventional vehicles, according to a Ford executive."Hybrids now have very few compromises compared to their gas alternatives," Andrew Frick, head of Ford's the Detroit automaker's gas and hybrid vehicle division, told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/business/autos/hybrid-car-sales-boom-b579bf21">The Wall Street Journal</a> this week.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/americans-buying-hybrids-as-electric-vehicle-sales-growth-slows-2023-12">Hybrids</a> have a traditional engine that charges batteries to power one or more electric motors, which makes them more efficient than gas-only vehicles. Many do not need to be plugged in like EVs, although some models can also be charged like one.Frick's comments come as demand for hybrid vehicles soars, partly due to drivers' worries about charging electric cars. Those concerns have dented sales of EVs in recent months.Another benefit of hybrids is that they're a lot cheaper than their fully electric rivals. Buyers were paying $42,500 on average for hybrids in late 2023, according to data from Edmunds, compared with $60,500 for EVs and $47,500 for gas cars.Cox Automotive expects 14% of the 15.7 million new vehicles sold in the US this year to be hybrids, higher than the 10% market share for EVs. There are about 70 hybrid models to choose from and they're often significantly cheaper than electric cars.Hybrid car sales growth in January was five times that of EVs, according to data from Morgan Stanley, with Ford emerging as one of the major beneficiaries of that trend.Sales of Ford hybrids jumped 37% in the first two months of 2024, with the hybrid version of the Maverick pickup truck leading the charge.<h2>Freedom of choice</h2>The hybrid Maverick starts at about $25,300 — some $1,500 more than the gas version. About 60% of those buying a hybrid Maverick are first-time Ford customers, product development operations chief Jim Baumbick previously told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ford-hybrid-battle-against-tesla-ev-maverick-pickup-2024-3">Business Insider</a>. That's far higher than the figure for other models."I know that hybrids will play a role for an extended time," he said. The model has been America's best-selling car for more than two decades.This week the White House gave automakers <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-ev-emissions-rule-labor-unions-auto-industry-2024-3">more time to ramp up EV sales</a> following pressure from the industry and unions.The Environmental Protection Agency issued the strictest limits to date on tailpipe pollution from vehicles sold between 2027 and 2032. So why is Ford going fully electric with the CUV, but not with its pick-up truck?For starters, it's because a heavy battery in an F-150 could actually hurt the truck's performance, Raj Nair, Ford's chief technology officer, told Business Insider."In a CUV, you aren't too worried about payload or towing, but it's very different for a truck. And when you put that number of cells and that much weight into the vehicle, it does cut into payload and towing," Nair told Business Insider.A hybrid version of the F-150, on the other hand, does not compromise the vehicle's capabilities, Nair said. In fact, it actually adds value to the vehicle."We want electrification to be a bonus" Nair said. "One thing that is really advantageous on the hybrid is it also becomes its own power generating source."Still, though, Nair said that a fully-electric truck isn't completely out of the picture."I would never rule out anything like that," Nair said. And it appears that companies with more hybrid focus are catching the attention of consumers.A recent <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-demand-still-strong-despite-slowdown-hybrids-survey-2024-1">study from GBK Collective, </a>a consulting firm<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-demand-still-strong-despite-slowdown-hybrids-survey-2024-1">,</a> found that Toyota – which has heavily prioritized hybrids over electric cars – was the most frequently considered brand among shoppers interested in buying an EV or hybrid, reflecting a turn away from EV giant Tesla.More hybrids on dealer lots are a good thing for shoppers, as the lack of supply has put a price premium on the few models in the market. More options are likely to ease some of this pricing pressure and open up the hybrid market to more shoppers."We believe that the market is ripe for much greater adoption for battery-powered vehicles should the industry do the work to listen to consumers and better understand the market," GBK President Jeremy Korst previously told Business Insider.

GM's plan to bring back hybrids is a win for dealers and shoppers 

<div class="image-container float_right" style="width:400px"><div class="image"></div>Tesla MotorsThe famously quiet electric Tesla Model S will soon have to make more noise.</div>Automakers are not happy with rules set down by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that will soon require hybrid and electric vehicles to play car-like sounds.
The sounds are required under the Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Act of 2010, to alert the blind, visually impaired, other pedestrians, and cyclists to the approach of cars that are otherwise nearly silent.
U.S. car companies say the rules are overly complicated, and require sounds that are louder than necessary, which would annoy passengers and add cost to the cars.
The NHTSA estimated in January the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/automakers-to-add-engine-noises-to-hybrids-nhtsa-rules-electric-2013-1">changes would cost $30 per vehicle</a>. It said they could could prevent 2,800 cyclist and pedestrian injuries over the life of each model year of the vehicles, and save 35 lives (a low number, as relatively few deaths are caused by low speed collisions).
In <a href="http://www.globalautomakers.org/sites/default/files/document/attachments/Alliance%20and%20Global%20Quiet%20Car%20Comments%20March%2015%202013%20%28ID%204858%29.pdf">remarks sent to NHTSA Administrator David Strickland</a> last week, trade groups Global Automakers and the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers said the proposed rules are "too complicated" and "unnecessarily prescriptive."
Between them, the groups represent just about every automaker operating in the US. According to their remarks, the proposed sound levels are so "excessive and unrealistic," even a high-performance sports car would not meet them (though a non-hybrid one would not have to).
Manufacturers are supposed to begin phasing in the changes by September 1, 2014, which the trade groups say "is not possible."
If the final rule is substantially similar to the NPRM [notice of proposed rulemaking], we recommend foregoing the phase-in and going directly to full implementation on 9/1/2018. However, if the final rule approximates the Alliance-Global recommendations, then a phase-in period is feasible beginning with vehicles built on or after 9/1/2015.
They will have some flexibility in what sort of sounds their cars will make, but most will likely go with a whirring noise that fits within the NHTSA rules.

Automakers Complain About Making Their Hybrids Sound Like Real Cars

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration <a href="http://www.nhtsa.gov/About+NHTSA/Press+Releases/DOT+Proposes+New+Minimum+Sound+Requirements+for+Hybrid+and+Electric+Vehicles">issued proposed rules today </a>to govern the sounds, required under the Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Act of 2010.
The proposed rules specify the noise be recognizable as coming from a motor vehicle, and change based on the vehicle's speed and direction. The recordings would only be necessary while the vehicle is traveling at 18 mph or less.
The cost of implementing the new rules would be rather low: The NHTSA estimates it at $30 per vehicle, and that the extra weight of the speaker system would add about $5 in fuel costs over the lifetime of the vehicle. Both costs are insignificant.
The NHTSA estimates the rules could prevent 2,800 cyclist and pedestrian injuries over the life of each model year of the vehicles, and save 35 lives (a low number, as relatively few deaths are caused by low speed collisions).
While the extra noise may annoy owners who value the quiet nature of their fuel-efficient <keyword id="20632" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cars">cars</keyword>, the new sounds likely won't sound like internal combustion engines.
Per their request, automakers will have flexibility in deciding what sort of sound their car will make, providing them an interesting opportunity to create a sound that is unique to their vehicle. But it is likely most will go with a whirring noise that will fit within the <a href="http://www.nhtsa.gov/About+NHTSA/Press+Releases/DOT+Proposes+New+Minimum+Sound+Requirements+for+Hybrid+and+Electric+Vehicles">NHTSA's rules</a>.
The public has 60 days to comment on the rules before they are finalized; automakers will have about four years to equip all their hybrid and electric vehicles with the ability to play the sounds.
