Industry players on Monday hailed the government's move to enhance the scheme outlay of Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (<keyword id="19912965" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fame" source="keywords">FAME</keyword>) <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> <keyword id="20527557" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="phase-ii" source="keywords">Phase II</keyword>, saying it will enhance infrastructure, foster widespread adoption and longevity of electric vehicles across the country. The Ministry of Heavy Industries announced that the scheme outlay of FAME India Phase II has been enhanced from Rs 10,000 crore to Rs 11,500 crore under FAME India scheme Phase II in order to give a further push to clean mobility in the country. The ministry also said that it is a "fund and term limited scheme", which means that the subsidies for demand incentive will be eligible for e-two-wheelers, e-three-wheelers, and e-four-wheelers sold till March 31, 2024 or till the time the funds are available, whichever is earlier. "We applaud the government's decision to enhance the FAME India Scheme Phase II outlay to Rs 11,500 crore. Industry hails extension of FAME II scheme to bolster EV infra

Montana law prohibits importing, possessing, and selling them.On Tuesday, Schubarth pleaded guilty to charges in a scheme that involved all three.His sentencing is scheduled for July and he faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for each of the two felony counts against him.<h2>The US has wildlife protection laws</h2>It all started in 2013 when an unnamed party illegally imported Marco Polo argali sheep parts to the US from Kyrgyzstan, according to court documents.Shortly thereafter, Schubarth allegedly got his hands on some of those sheep parts and, in 2015, paid a deposit of $4,200 to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ethics-of-human-cloning-scientific-progress-2020-7">produce cloned</a> sheep embryos from the dead argali's remains.In May 2017, a pure argali sheep was born from one of those <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-clones-3-cows-make-more-milk-claim-supercow-2023-2">cloned embryos</a>. Schubarth named him Montana Mountain King.Mountain King would be Schubarth's golden goose in a lucrative business scheme to create larger, more attractive sheep for (mostly) Texan hunting farms, according to court documents.In 2018, Schubarth harvested Mountain King's sperm, which he used to artificially inseminate <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sheep-walking-down-cliff-optical-illusion-viral-2019-9">bighorn ewes</a> (female sheep) on his farm to create hybrid offspring.Over the next several years, Schubarth, with several unnamed parties, illegally transported dozens of ewes and their <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pizzly-bears-polar-grizzly-hybrid-spread-due-to-climate-crisis-2021-4">hybrid offspring</a> across state lines.In the process, they are accused of forging vet inspection certificates and lying that the sheep were a legally permitted species, according to court documents.<h2>Sheep worth tens of thousands of dollars</h2>Marco Polo, a subspecies of argali sheep, is "an almost mythical animal" prized by trophy hunters for its large spiral horns, naturalist George Schaller told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.npr.org/transcripts/5300762">NPR in 2006</a>.Schubarth's hybrids were a mix of the Marco Polo and other bighorn sheep. Their large size and giant horns would fetch higher prices on the game farms than other species. In 2020, Schubarth sold 24 hybrids for $46,200, according to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/montana-man-pleads-guilty-federal-wildlife-trafficking-charges-part-yearslong-effort-create">Department of Justice's statement</a>.Cloning the dead sheep isn't where Schubarth broke the law since there's no regulation on animal cloning in the US, Joyce Tischler, a professor at Lewis &amp; Clark Law School's Center for Animal Law Studies, told Business Insider.It was all of that illegal transporting across state lines (and the lying and forging of official documents).On March 12, Schubarth pleaded guilty to conspiracy and trafficking in violation of the Lacey Act, according to the DOJ's statement. The act <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/canadian-woman-sold-polar-bear-skulls-to-undercover-agent-doj-2021-5">bans the trade</a> of wildlife that was obtained illegally.The retail value of the transported wildlife was between $250,000 and $550,000, according to court documents."What I see as the danger is that if this becomes popular, then other people are going to want to illegally import argali sheep to make money off of them," Joyce Tischler, a professor at Lewis &amp; Clark Law School's Center for Animal Law Studies, told Business Insider.<h2>How to clone a sheep</h2>Though none of the Department of Justice's charges relate to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/colorado-scientists-cloned-endangered-ferret-using-33-year-old-dna-2021-2">cloning</a> of illegally imported sheep parts, the process remains controversial in some countries.In 2015, the European Union <a target="_blank" href="https://www.science.org/content/article/eu-parliament-votes-ban-cloning-farm-animals">banned</a> the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-clones-3-cows-make-more-milk-claim-supercow-2023-2">cloning of farm animals</a>, citing animal welfare concerns. One of the biggest concerns was that cloning mammals <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ed.ac.uk/roslin/about/dolly/facts/cloning">has</a> a low success rate. It's unclear what Schubarth's success rate was, though court documents only mention a single cloned animal — Montana Mountain King.<div type="image" title="Dolly the sheep" height="2048" width="3072" msid="108505239" hostid="261"></div>Some improvements have been made since <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-happened-dolly-cloned-sheep-2016-7">Dolly the sheep,</a> the world's first mammal clone, was born in 1996. However, it's still an involved process that requires veterinary expertise and a surgical procedure for sheep.The most difficult part is inserting the cloned embryos into a live ewe to carry it to term, Alison Van Eenennaam, a biotechnologist with the University of California, Davis who wasn't involved in the case, told Business Insider.An expert will make an incision, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/human-cells-sheep-embryos-organ-transplants-xenotransplantation-2018-2">implant the embryo</a> in the uterus, and sew the ewe up again. "It's a real scene," Van Eenennaam said. "It's not that trivial to do."The sheep would have to be at the right stage of its reproductive cycle to maintain the pregnancy, Van Eenennaam said.Once Schubarth had the male clone, Mountain King, it was an easier process from there to build a family of hybrids. He could simply use King's semen to artificially inseminate ewes, no surgical implanting necessary.<h2>Cloning isn't the real concern here</h2>The plea agreement requires Schubarth to quarantine any clones and offspring. The US Fish and Wildlife Service may also decide to neuter the animals, according to court documents.Gregory Kaebnick, a senior research scholar with The Hastings Center who studies bioethics, isn't worried that the cloned sheep may impact wild species or alter ecosystems since they seemed to have been bread for hunting. But he said that it could be a concern in the future."Some of this technology is coming down to what's sometimes called the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/crispr-outlook-for-2022-top-gene-editing-experts-2021-11">DIY bio</a> level or the garage bio level," he said. Livestock cloning still has a relatively low success rate.However, she noted that bringing in tissue from any non-native species could be a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/experts-fear-lax-rules-bsl-4-labs-could-lead-pandemic-2021-6">biosecurity risk</a> if they're carrying disease."It's kind of your worst nightmare," she said, "that material is being moved around without the proper clearances just because of the potential threat to the agricultural industry."Schubarth's lawyers didn't respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>An 80-year-old rancher was part of a 10-year conspiracy to cross-breed huge sheep for hunting, US officials said.</li><li>Officials said Arthur Schubarth cloned a prized Central Asian argali sheep and sold its hybrid offspring.</li></ul>A Montana rancher, who pleaded guilty to two wildlife-related felonies, tried to illegally breed a "giant hybrid sheep" species for higher returns in the hunting market, the Justice Department said.Arthur "Jack" Schubarth, 80, sought to create offshoots of a sheep species from Central Asia prized among hunters — the Marco Polo argali sheep, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/montana-man-pleads-guilty-federal-wildlife-trafficking-charges-part-yearslong-effort-create">DOJ said in a Tuesday release.</a>He became the center of a 10-year conspiracy that involved sheep cloning, cross-breeding, and illegal import of animal parts like testicles, per prosecutors.By cross-breeding the argali with other sheep species, such as the Rocky Mountain bighorn, Schubarth sought to create huge sheep hybrids, per court documents seen by Business Insider.The argali is valued because it's the largest living wildlife sheep breed on Earth, and is considered a <a target="_blank" href="https://biologicaldiversity.org/w/news/press-releases/us-fish-and-wildlife-service-urged-to-reject-import-of-trump-jrs-argali-sheep-trophy-2019-12-19/">near-threatened species by the US</a>. It's hunted for sport due to its size and long horns.These large argali-based cross-breeds would have fetched Schubarth higher prices in the hunting preserve market, prosecutors said.Around 14.4 million people hunt in the US, and spend a combined $45.2 billion on their hunting activities, per the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.fws.gov/sites/default/files/documents/Final_2022-National-Survey_101223-accessible-single-page.pdf">Fish and Wildlife Service's five-year report published in 2022.</a>Schubarth bred his offshoot species from a single male argali sheep he kept at his ranch and called the "Montana Mountain King," prosecutors said.He came into possession of the "Montana Mountain King" by working in 2013 with another Montana resident, who was unnamed, to bring in biological tissue of an argali that was hunted in Kyrgyzstan.Schubarth then spent $4,200 making cloned embryos from the tissue, and in 2017, his male argali was born, prosecutors said.The rancher brought the "Montana Mountain King" to his property in Montana despite knowing he was breaking state animal trafficking laws, per court documents.He then extracted semen from the "Montana Mountain King," using it to inseminate dozens of ewes of different species, prosecutors said.According to court documents, Schubarth sold the male sheep's hybrid offspring for as high as $10,000 per animal for two years. Some will give staff the flexibility to work in the office, from home, or another location, otherwise known as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-to-know-about-the-future-of-hybrid-remote-work-2021-4">hybrid working</a>.Accounting and professional services firm KPMG is one of the many companies making this transition. The Big Four consultant plans to allow employees to split their time spent in the office, at home, and at client offices, Kevin Hogarth, chief people officer at KPMG UK told Insider."We're clear that we're not going back to working the way we did prior to the <keyword id="43587" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="pandemic">pandemic</keyword>," Hogarth said.He explained that the majority of KPMG's workforce were comfortable with continuing to work a proportion of their time at home as they had greater flexibility with organising themselves and didn't have to commute. In some cultures, women are more likely to work from home and this could resort to a 1970's male culture in various offices, he added.If business leaders aren't careful, they could be in danger of legal litigation because of the "presence privilege and psychological bias" towards those employees who come into the office more, Sakol said.Sandeep Mishra, professor at the Lang School of business and economics at the University of Guelph in Ontario, agreed with Sakol. Mishra told Insider that "folks working in the office will be more "present" in the minds of others in the organization," meaning there won't be "an even playing field" between those working in the office and remotely."That inequality in "face time" will likely inflame common cognitive biases," he said. Everything from training and development, to collaboration, promotions, and task assignment - remote staff will "likely be disadvantaged without explicit policy to prevent otherwise," Mishra said.But Hogarth said <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-consultancies-are-revamping-internship-and-new-hire-programs-2020-5#kpmg-plans-to-bring-in-2300-college-and-mba-interns-for-virtual-internships-6">KPMG</a> had learnt a lot about its employees working remotely successfully."I don't think hybrid working in itself necessarily increases the risk" of lack of inclusivity, he said.<a href="https://www.gsb.stanford.edu/faculty-research/working-papers/does-working-home-work-evidence-chinese-experiment">Research</a> showed that there were false perceptions about remote workers being considered more lazy, <a href="https://spssi.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/toc/15404560/2013/69/2">less competent</a>, and <a href="https://pubsonline.informs.org/doi/10.1287/orsc.2018.1265">less committed</a> to their jobs than office employees, meaning remote staff were <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-avoid-being-overlooked-for-promotions-raises-remote-work-2021-3">less likely to get promoted</a>. There's concern that these perceptions will reappear as companies <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-office-working-from-home-remote-return-to-office-2021-1">reopen their offices</a> and people get vaccinated.<h3>Managers have to adapt to hybrid working</h3>The KPMG UK executive told Insider how the firm will support its staff through regular check-ins, a buddy scheme, and equipping managers with the right training to look after those working remotely."Now, we just need to be a bit more thoughtful about making sure that we're proactively reaching out and checking in with our people," Hogarth said.Denise Rousseau, professor of organizational behavior and public policy at Carnegie Mellon University, told Insider the danger with hybrid working is that managers might assume they can manage the new environment in an old pre-pandemic manner and become "locked into the past."Managers might forget about development, the need to build bonds between colleagues and enquiring about information which they wouldn't usually pick up from someone working remotely, such as problems at home, Rousseau said. Hybrid working filters out those cues, she added.Managers "should know that if [they] want to be supportive," she said.Online real estate company Zillow is also planning to get employees back into the office post-pandemic, but <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hybrid-work-models-could-hurt-remote-workers-zillow-ceo-warns-2021-2">CEO Rich Barton said in February</a> that a hybrid model could create a "two-class system" which negatively impacts remote workers."We must ensure a level playing field for all team members, regardless of their physical location," Barton said.<h3>Hybrid working offers flexibility</h3>Insurance marketplace <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lloyds-of-london-ditches-plan-to-create-own-electronic-exchanges-2020-11">Lloyd's of London</a> is also switching to a more hybrid working approach, according to a spokeswoman."Flexibility will be key when choosing where and when to work based on the needs of the team - this won't be a 'one size fits all' approach," she said. Office space will be used for employees to work together, whilst those working alone will do so remotely, she added.Other employers, such as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-employees-upset-office-centric-culture-plans-2021-3">Amazon</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jpmorgan-nyc-headquarters-design-270-park-avenue-request-proposals-2021-4">JPMorgan</a>, are more focused on returning to an "office-centric culture" after the pandemic. A <keyword id="44660" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="JPMorgan">JPMorgan</keyword> spokesperson pointed Insider towards <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jpmorgan-ceo-jamie-dimon-remote-work-return-office-shareholder-letter-2021-4">CEO Jamie Dimon's annual shareholder letter,</a> which said that most of the bank's employees would eventually return to the office full time. Dimon said that only some employees would be working under a hybrid model, while 10% of the workforce will be based entirely from home.In the letter, Dimon mentioned some of the drawbacks of working from home, including video calls slowing down decision-making and interns and new staff members being the most negatively affected.But the hybrid working trend is happening across a variety of industries. In the tech sector, companies like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sundar-pichai-google-office-work-from-home-flexible-work-week-2020-12">Google</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-flexible-work-policy-how-it-works-2020-10">Microsoft</a> are embracing a more flexible approach to work culture. "If I'm in a team, and I want to work from home two days a week, but my main rival for promotion is coming in every day, what am I going to do? "Even if the CEO wants to work on Wednesday and Friday in the office, they have to stay at home because otherwise it's the worst example ever. It's like the CEO saying 'we want you to work hard' but then leaving at 3pm."

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Nearly every major automaker has some kind of electrification plan in the works, following the EV lead set by Tesla.</li><li>But pure <keyword id="312660" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="EVS">EVs</keyword> still have limited range and nationwide charging infrastructure isn't where it needs to be in the US just yet. </li><li><keyword id="2158849" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="plug-in-hybrids">Plug-in hybrids</keyword> with good EV-only range are the solution.</li></ul>Much of the talk surrounding the so-called "future" of the automotive space has to do with battery-electric cars. EVs are the hot item buyers and automakers are jumping on now, with the latter spending billions and creating all-new product lines that run on electricity alone. That push includes both taking major risks with top-selling vehicles and reviving storied nameplates with an electric twist. Ford is hard at work on an all-electric F-150 pickup, America's favorite four-wheeled conveyance since Ronald Reagan was president. General Motors killed off the Hummer after the financial crisis, but the brand is back as an electric truck under GMC.<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/super-bowl-commercials-electric-cars-hummer-vw-porsche-taycan-2020-2">Based on marketing alone</a>, it would seem to be game over for the internal-combustion engine. But there's a significant flaw with that argument: While EVs get the buzz, 98% of all vehicles sold in 2019 ran on some form of a petroleum product.<h2>The EV revolution is already well underway</h2>There's no denying the need for cleaner cars. <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/jan/01/vehicles-climate-change-emissions-trump-administration">The Guardian reported in 2018</a> that personal cars were the biggest source of carbon-dioxide emissions in the US — a figure aided, no doubt, by our propensity to buying big trucks and SUVs instead of smaller, more fuel-efficient economy cars. Thus, the push for EVs. With Tesla leading the charge, both in EV sales and in building out the vital charging infrastructure, we can now count Volkswagen, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Jaguar, Porsche, Polestar, Audi, and Nissan among the automakers with all-electric offerings. State legislatures are getting on board, too, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/climate/trump-environment-rollbacks.html">even if the current federal administration isn't</a>. Most recently, California Gov. Gavin Newsom's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/california-to-ban-sale-of-new-gasoline-powered-passenger-vehicles-in-2035-2020-9">executive order</a> will ban the sale of new gasoline-powered passenger cars and trucks starting in 2035 in an aggressive push to reduce emissions.It's an ambitious idea, one that buys into the need for an EV revolution. But the real EV revolution — one that's attainable and realistic for most US buyers, anyway — is already well underway in the form of highly capable plug-in hybrid cars. We'll be the first to admit that hybrid cars suffer from a bit of an image problem. They don't have the futuristic, space-age design that so many EVs have. They don't beat supercars in whisper-silent drag races. For a long time, when people thought of a hybrid car, they thought of a <keyword id="108403" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Toyota-Prius">Toyota Prius</keyword> — an objectively fine vehicle, but one that was perceived to be driven by tree-huggers and hippies, despite having sold more than 6 million examples since its introduction in the late 1990s.But <keyword id="6557668" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hybrids">hybrids</keyword> get the job done. You don't need to make any major life changes to own one, and you don't need to build out a major, nation-wide fast-charging network for them, either — a costly undertaking that Tesla has committed to, but that other automakers have tried to achieve through partnerships with charging providers to lower expenses and spread around the risk. <h2><keyword id="6374528" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="toyota">Toyota</keyword> has always been the hybrid leader</h2>Toyota hybrids have a lock on the situation. The co-author of this story, Matt DeBord, owns a 2017 RAV4 hybrid and routinely averages 35 mpg. The majority of that figure comes from city driving, where fuel economy is always lower. He also has a 2011 Prius and even at close a decade old, the car continues to serve up better than 40 mpg. But neither of those vehicles can travel far, or drive even remotely fast, on battery power alone. Toyota is aware that many customers want better, and that's where hybrids with superior electric performance enter the picture. And Toyota leads the pack here, as well.This was most obvious after the 10 or so days co-author Kristen Lee spent with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rav4-toyota-plug-in-hybrid-first-drive-review-suv-mpg-2020-10">the new Toyota RAV4 Prime</a>, the plug-in hybrid version of the popular RAV4. Because plug-in hybrids generally have bigger batteries, they have longer EV-only ranges than non-plug-ins. Toyota <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/toyota-rav4-prime-plug-in-hybrid-specs-pricing-release-date-2020-6">quotes</a> the RAV4 Prime's EV-only range to be 42 miles. In our own testing, we achieved 35 miles, but that was only because we took it on the highway. An all-electric range of 42 miles is impressive no matter which way you look at it, especially in an SUV like the RAV4. In the US, the length of the average commute is 16 miles — at least, according to <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Technology/Traffic/story?id=485098&amp;page=1ge=1">this ABC News story</a> from the mid 2000s — which means you could theoretically do 1.5 commutes to and from work without using a drop of fuel.You'll emit far less noise and pollution while you're sitting in traffic, then you can charge the car in your garage overnight if you have one. Repeat it all the next day and your trips to the gas station will be rare. An <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/05/08/aaa-says-americans-warm-to-electric-cars-but-most-arent-ready-to-buy.html">AAA study from last year</a> found that about 40 million US buyers will consider a battery-electric car, but <a href="https://www.thedrive.com/news/26637/americans-cite-range-anxiety-cost-as-largest-barriers-for-new-ev-purchases-study#:~:text=By%20a%20margin%2C%20the%20largest,low%20availability%20of%20charging%20stations.">The Drive</a> reported that the biggest thing keeping more buyers from buying an electric car is range anxiety. "That is, 58 percent of drivers are afraid that they will run out of power before being able to charge their vehicle," the outlet elaborated, "while another 49 percent fear the <a href="http://thedrive.com/news/22830/tesla-says-99-percent-of-the-u-s-population-lives-within-150-miles-of-a-supercharger">low availability of charging stations</a>."A capable plug-in hybrid with great EV-only range solves this problem. Drivers can rely on the battery for local commutes, and if they wish to go somewhere further, they aren't constricted by the lack of chargers along the way. <h2>Not enough hybrids to meet demand?</h2>In the ideal scenario, Toyota makes enough RAV4 Primes for anyone who wants to buy one and we gradually shift everyone to electrified driving that way. Prior to the latest wave of EVs, both real and planned, people who study <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> for a living or who have researched the impact of auto emissions on <keyword id="6361617" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="climate-change">climate change</keyword> thought that widespread hybridization would be the way to go. That <a href="https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/06/20190618-ea.html">could</a> lower greenhouse-gas pollution from tailpipes by 30%.However, <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a33266528/2021-toyota-rav4-prime-supply-demand/">Car and Driver</a> reported in July that because of "unforeseen battery supply constraints," availability of the plug-in SUV this year won't be as robust as it should be. Toyota is now aiming for 5,000 RAV4 Primes, which Car and Driver said looks like "limited availability.""The result is limited supplies, sellouts, and potentially, prices above the MSRP of $39,220," Car and Driver wrote."As of right now, we have no additional production confirmed," a Toyota spokesperson said when Business Insider asked if there were more cars planned for next year.In some respects, the composition of the US market is ideal for big carmakers that don't want to miss out on a large-scale shift to EVs, but that are also determined to preserve the gas-guzzling, feature-loaded cash cows that buyers are able to afford thanks to rock-bottom interest rates and long loan terms.The legacy players can make ambitious gestures toward EVs, and they can even roll out impressive vehicles — namely, Porsche, with the stunning <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-taycan-rose-gold-electric-vehicle-ev-2021-paint-colors-2020-8">Taycan</a>— but they can continue to produce big-ticket pickups and SUVs that average less than 20 mpg. The trick is to avoid falling behind on research and development. But even if an automaker does, it can always partner up with a competitor and hedge some risk. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gm-honda-alliance-sharing-platforms-engineering-development-costs-2020-9">Honda recently did this with General Motors</a>, and Ford and Volkswagen have been exploring a sort of soft alliance on all things futuristic, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ford-vw-alliance-announcement-details-2019-7">from EVs to autonomous vehicles</a>.<h2>Government could lend a helping hand</h2>With limited resources all around, and with the car business being a notably capital-intensive enterprise, it's easy to see hybrids getting kicked to the curb. Why go to the trouble of engineering and marketing a new generation of plug-ins when you can prepare to sell buyers an EV instead? From a giant automaker's point of view, compliance with various regulations on fleet emissions around the globe would be covered with a portfolio balanced out by EVs and gas guzzlers, allowing big pickups and SUVs keep the lights on while the EV transition continues.There are two losers in that wager: the consumer and the planet. The consumer is deprived of the perfect, versatile transportation solution in a plug-in hybrid, while the changing climate remains in a waiting game for EVs to achieve escape velocity. The latter, by the way, is behind schedule: A decade ago, EVs were supposed to have <a href="https://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/14/carlos-ghosn-evs-could-account-10-percent-of-global-sales-in-20/">taken over 10% to 15% of the market</a> by now. But even with Tesla's success and traditional automakers such as GM and VW launching dozens of EVs in the coming years, EV growth in mature regions like the US and Europe has been sluggish.An obvious spur to higher hybrid sales comes with better government incentives. The largest US federal incentive is a $7,500 tax credit — certainly helpful, but canted toward buyers who both purchase a 100% electric vehicle. Plus, the credit phases out when an automaker sells more than 200,000 qualifying vehicles, and that's hardly a long-term inducement.The credit thus isn't designed to move the needle for the mass market, where knocking $5,000 to $10,000 off the sticker price of a plug-in hybrid would convince buyers to seriously consider the option.<h2>Broadening a hybrid incentive through tax policy</h2>When the Green New Deal debuted in Congress last year, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/green-new-deal-is-right-and-we-dont-have-to-wait-for-ambitious-goals-2019-2">we suggested</a> the idea of a $10,000 hybrid voucher to reduce taxable income. It would be like making a contribution to a retirement plan, or, if you run your own business, deducting the cost of your vehicle as an expense.The incentive could also be extended to used hybrids, but with discounting applied based on a vehicle's age. The entire scheme would also be voluntary, so automakers and consumers wouldn't be coerced into doing anything. This could clearly get expensive, but with a looming climate crisis, giving consumers an opportunity to buy a hybrid or plug-in now has to look cheaper than the alternatives. Capturing future carbon in the atmosphere and sequestering it with technologies that haven't yet been developed at scale has to be far costlier than simply not generating the carbon emissions at all.Luckily, there are more hybrids and plug-in hybrids today than ever before to choose from, giving buyers far more variety than when the Prius was the only real game in town. Audi <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a30560357/audi-q5-a8-plug-in-hybrid-2020/">has a few</a>. The Lincoln Aviator is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2020-lincoln-aviator-review-hybrid-specs-three-row-suv-luxury-2020-7">an absolute heavyweight in plug-in guise</a>. And the beloved Jeep Wrangler <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeep-wrangler-plug-in-hybrid-coming-in-2020-8">will soon have a plug-in version as well</a>.So, while everyone else might, don't be so quick to assume that purely battery electric cars are the solution. Do consider the humble hybrid.

Announcing this in a series of tweets, Javadekar said the decision reflects the government's commitment to reduce dependence on fossil fuel and to address issues of vehicular emissions." The Department of Heavy Industries (DHI) under the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises is administering the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &amp;) <keyword id="6354973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles">Electric Vehicles</keyword> in India (FAME India) Scheme since April, 2015 to promote adoption of electric/hybrid vehicles (xEVs) in India. In the first phase of the scheme up to March 31, 2019, about 2,80,987 hybrid and electric vehicles were supported by way of demand incentive, amounting to about Rs 359 crore. Further, DHI sanctioned 425 electric and hybrid buses to various cities in the country with a total cost of about Rs 280 crores. The Department of Heavy Industry had also sanctioned 520 charging stations for Rs 43 crore (approx.) in cities like Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Jaipur and Delhi under Phase-I of <keyword id="2800532" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="FAME-India-scheme">FAME India Scheme</keyword>. At present, Phase-II of FAME India Scheme is being implemented for a period of three years from April 1, 2019 with a total budgetary support of Rs 10,000 crore. The timing and scale of the return to office depends on government guidance, they added.For graduates in these departments, coming into the office every day would not be mandatory, according to the sources. The number of days that graduates spend in the office will depend on the department they are working in, sources said.Lee, who has worked at the bank for around 24 years, said investment banking graduates can benefit more from the scheme and mentorship of senior staff if they're in the office. Graduates learn more if they're able to talk and directly ask questions to their boss and colleagues, compared with doing so over video calls, Lee said.But Lee said some graduate training sessions worked better over video calls, especially in their first year, Lee said. "I think it's super important for our junior population to be in the office, but it's only helpful if they're around seniors that are able to oversee what it is they're doing," she said."Where there are opportunities to speak to business leaders and infrastructure leaders, I think those types of conversations are always best done in person," she said.Citing a survey of Deutsche Bank's summer interns in the UK, Lee said 75% of the respondents wanted to be in the office. The remaining 25% wanted to be in the bank but couldn't because of travel restrictions, she said.In the US, 92% of summer interns elected to work from one of the bank's offices, according to an internal memo to US employees seen by Insider.Deutsche Bank is encouraging all its staff to spend as much time in the office as they can, Lee said. She works from home once a week.In a separate internal memo to UK employees seen by Insider, Lee said being back in the office "will be an opportunity to meet, manage and learn in person and further develop all-important contacts across the organisation, particularly with our summer interns and other new joiners to the bank."
