These robots will help deliver food and medicines to Coronavirus infected patients under quarantine — reducing the level of direct contact with medical workers.

So, even if a medical worker isn’t physically present — the patient will still be able to interact with a real person, just without the added risk. All a person needs to operate them is a mobile phone and Android controller. Meet the robots Two prototypes, dubbed ‘Zafi’ and ‘Zafi Med’ were tested at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital on Sunday, March 29, according to the <a href="https://www.newindianexpress.com/states/tamil-nadu/2020/mar/29/tiruchy-gh-may-soon-have-robots-to-reach-out-to-patients-in-coronavirus-isolation-ward-2123088.html">New Indian Express</a>. Zafi was created in 2019, however, Zafi Med only came into existence a couple of days ago. Both are similar in size and shape at 4 feet tall, but the original was modified to cater to the need of medical workers during the Coronavirus outbreak.

 Zafi can only be operated from a distance of 250 meters and lift up to 8 kilos, whereas Zafi Med can be operated from as much as 1.5 kilometers away and lift upto 20 kilos. The only way that Zafi Med falls short of Zafi is that it does not have wireless talking.

 Reports indicate that the robots will have sensors to ring the bell once they’re outside a patient’s room. Right now, the district administration is yet to approve their use in the hospital. According to ANI, four robots are ready to deploy as soon as the measure is rubber stamped. They will be connected to the nurses and doctors stations in the hospital. Using contactless delivery can reduce the risk of infection to medical workers and reduce the burden on the already-limited medical supplies. It also helps lower the stress on nurses and doctors who are working overtime during the Coronavirus outbreak. Coronavirus in Tamil Nadu The numbers of Coronavirus infections in Tamil Nadu have crossed 50 with one death and five recoveries. According to Health Minister C Vijayabaskar, there are 13,323 beds present in isolation wards and over 3,000 ventilators available in the state. Others in the state — like a textile store owner in Madurai’s Nadaraj Nagar who manufactured 8,000 masks and distributed them to needy — are stepping up to address the pandemic.

A small medical team remotely controlled the field hospital robots. Patients wore wristbands that gathered blood pressure and other vital data.The smart clinic only handled patients for a few days, but it foreshadowed a future in which robots tend to patients with contagious diseases while health care workers manage from safe distances.Patients in hospitals in Thailand, Israel and elsewhere meet with robots for consultations done by doctors via videoconference. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="1005599" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Boston-Dynamics">Boston Dynamics</keyword>' lifelike <keyword id="16719" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="robots">robots</keyword> have become famous for their almost uncanny, realistic movements in recent years.</li><li>After years of hype mostly generated by their massively popular <keyword id="10879" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="YouTube">YouTube</keyword> videos, Boston Dynamics began licensing its four-legged Spot robot last year.</li><li>Now, Spot is being used in a hospital in Boston to help doctors remotely communicate with <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword> patients, and in Singapore to help enforce social distancing.</li><li>Boston Dynamics founder Marc Raibert spoke with Business Insider about Spot's ambitions in telemedicine, how Spot became Internet famous, and whether robots like Spot will ever surface in the home. </li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul>Spot, Boston Dynamics' four-legged dog-like machine, may just be the most famous robot of all time. Ever since the Massachussetts-based robotics company posted its first <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gi6Ohnp9x8&amp;t=12s=12s">video</a> to YouTube more than 10 years ago, a clip that shows how a quadruped robot called "BigDog" was able to keep its balance after being kicked, the company's robots have gained a fervent following.Love them or hate them — some have called them <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2019/11/26/boston-dynamics-terrifying-robotic-dogs-have-been-put-work-by-least-one-police-agency/">"terrifying"</a>, while others have applauded their <a href="https://medium.com/syncedreview/watch-this-boston-dynamics-robot-performs-incredible-parkour-4961d2dc0321">parkour skills</a> — they've certainly attracted an audience, and more than 1.7 million subscribers on YouTube.That first video from 2009 has 1.5 million views, while Boston Dynamics' <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sBBaNYex3E">most recent video</a> of its humanoid Atlas robot has more than 9.7 million views.Marc Raibert, Boston Dynamics' founder, chairman, and former CEO, says its robots were never meant to be famous. In fact, it happened by accident. "At the beginning, we had no idea," Raibert said to Business Insider. "A couple of early videos, they actually kind of leaked onto YouTube, and we saw that our customers and sponsors had a very strong, positive response."Over the past year, Boston Dynamics' Spot robot has established more of a presence offscreen and outside the lab as well. Boston Dynamics began <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boston-dynamics-is-leasing-out-its-spot-robot-2019-9">leasing out its Spot robots</a> back in September, and since then the robots have been used to <a href="https://www.technologyreview.com/2020/02/13/844815/boston-dynamics-spot-dog-robot-is-going-to-patrol-an-oil-rig-in-norway/">patrol oil rigs</a>, assist <a href="https://gizmodo.com/u-s-police-already-using-spot-robot-from-boston-dynami-1840029868">law enforcement</a>, and <a href="https://www.roboticsbusinessreview.com/construction/boston-dynamics-touts-partnerships-with-construction-firms/">help on construction sites</a>. Most recently, Spot has gotten an even bigger job: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boston-dynamics-robot-used-on-coronavirus-patients-in-boston-2020-4">helping doctors communicate</a> with COVID-19 patients remotely at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Raibert believes there's a broader opportunity for robots like Spot to assist with telemedicine, and hopes the robot will soon be able to help take vitals from patients in the near future."The big picture is, you can have a situation where it's not good to have direct human contact with whatever is being contacted, and the robots are great for that," he said. Business Insider recently spoke with Raibert and Michael Perry, Boston Dynamics' vice president of business development, to discuss how the company has adapted to working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, how Spot is being used in hospitals, and whether there will ever be robots in our homes unloading our dishwashers.The interview below has been lightly edited for length and clarity.<h2>On robotics after the pandemic</h2>Lisa Eadicicco, Business Insider: How do you think Boston Dynamics will change after the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword>? How do you think the robotics and technology industries overall will change after the virus, and how do you think the world will change?Marc Raibert, chairman of Boston Dynamics: Well, I think there's sort of an immediate today, tomorrow and the long-term-future answers to your question. Immediately, we've had to make a transition from working heavily in our laboratories, where we have robots and testing and basically rely on the facilities being the center that all the work revolves around, to a more distributed operation. We have successfully kept our operation going by having people with robots at home and able to work on them.I think we were very skeptical about being able to work from home and being distributed, and clearly the success and making that work is going to carry forward and more people will continue to do that, probably permanently. I don't think we're going to permanently become a distributed virtual company like some are. We're still going to value getting together both to see each other, but also to work with the machines.On the robotics side, for some people it's becoming clear that having robots that can free people from directly engaging in dull, dirty, and dangerous work is a thing that would be valuable to the degree that robotics companies can achieve it.One of the projects we've been working on we've been calling Dr. Spot. We're working with the Brigham and Women's hospital here in Boston. We've had robots there that are doing tele-interaction with potential patients. We started to monitor just the front end, just a little bit of monitoring their vital signs remote with cameras mounted on the robot. And we're working on doing more and more that way.<div type="image" title="20200410 drspot v1 front.JPG" height="2592" width="4608" msid="75810738" hostid="261"></div>Eadicicco: How long do you think it'll be before Spot can measure vitals more broadly? And how long do you think it'll be until that capability is out of development?Michael Perry, vice president of business development at Boston Dynamics: So we actually deployed our remote vitals assessment version of Spot to Brigham and Women's Hospital, so they just started testing it. The current capabilities [include] being able to do assessment of body temperature, the surface temperature, and you can make some inferences on core body temperature from surface temperature. And then you can also look at respiratory rate as well as pulse.The fourth thing that's really critical for this application is looking at the volume of oxygen in the blood. And that's still something that the entire field is looking at how you can do that without contact. So we've got some leads on algorithms there, but we've not put them into production yet.Eadicicco: Are you looking to expand Spot to other hospitals as well during the pandemic?Raibert: We've gotten a lot of inbound inquiries about it. We don't have it deployed anywhere else yet, Michael and his team are in conversations with lots of potential users.Perry: So the good news about hospitals is that they're very meticulous about how they adopt new technology into their workflow. Doctors and their nurses are saying [they] need this immediately, but it also has to go to the internal review board to go through their legal team and things like that. So we're in that process with a few other hospitals. But, you know, to be candid, we're probably going to be past the peak by the time that more hospitals actually start deploying it.<h2>On making robots useful</h2>Eadicicco: Before this happened, a lot of the headlines were about how Spot was being used in a lot of different applications like law enforcement, inspecting oil rigs, and things like that. What has the virus taught you about the future of how robots like Spot can be used elsewhere? Are there any new industries or applications that you're looking to move into that maybe you weren't considering before the pandemic?Raibert: Well, it's always been our ambition to embrace a broad set of uses for Spot. We called it a platform and still do. So it's always been our intention to get the robot out there in a form where the capability was accessible to a wide variety of people, including people who are going to develop actual use cases on top of the platform. So we're not surprised, and we've had, even from day one, let's say for the last six or eight months, we've had a broad set of kinds of uses.Perry: The key story is about safety. You know, where the robot is primarily providing value by taking a person out of a dangerous situation. On a construction site that's somewhat true, but the main story for those customers previously was about process improvement and really clear [return on investment] calculations about how much we're going to decrease the overall project costs by doing better monitoring.But it's also a function of building a just-in-case model so that there's limited disruption to their business flow. So we've got construction site managers who are managing 30 projects across the Northeast, and they're sitting in their homes unable to access those sites. And even if work is continuing progress on those sites, wouldn't it be great if they could dial into a robot and just walk around the construction site and see how things are going? Or better document the progress on the job site?The safety story has become more top of mind for more industries at a faster rate than it was, I would say, six months ago. But now what we're seeing across all industry segments, including entertainment and theme parks, is how to limit the amount of people that have to be in a given environment at a given time. And that's obviously top of mind right now during this crisis.<div type="image" title="Boston Dynamics" height="2304" width="3456" msid="75810743" hostid="261"></div><h2>How Boston Dynamics' robots became internet famous</h2>Eadicicco: You've released videos of your robots over the years that have become pretty popular. I haven't really seen that from like any other robotics companies. What has that been like? And did you ever expect them to catch on the way that they have over the years?Raibert: At the beginning we had no idea. We didn't say, 'Okay, how are we going to do marketing without a marketing budget?' A couple of early videos, they actually kind of leaked onto YouTube. And we saw that our customers and sponsors had a very strong positive response. And so we decided, well, we'll put out more.But in terms of the style, which I think is responsible for some of the reaction, it's always been our goal to just show what the robot is doing. You know, not do a lot of rigmarole with boosting it up. Obviously we edit to show usually the best stuff, but we try to be honest in them. We don't show something that we only did once and couldn't be done before or after.Eadicicco: So the first video resulted from a leak?Raibert: It wasn't exactly a leak. We put the video on our website and then someone took it and put it on YouTube and it got a big response. And so we said, 'Oh, okay, I guess we better have our own YouTube site.' We'd always made videos even for many years before YouTube. Part of our DNA was to show progress. If you write papers and do graphs about robots, you get a totally different impression than if you see that moving in the world.<div type="image" title="Boston Dynamics" height="457" width="840" msid="75810747" hostid="261"></div><h2>On when you'll see robots in the home, doing everything</h2>Eadicicco: We've talked a lot about all the different industries that Spot has been present in, but there have also been these videos over the years of Spot <a href="https://youtu.be/tf7IEVTDjng?t=60">helping unload the dishwasher</a> and things like that. I'd love to hear more about whether you think there's ever going to be a place for a robot like Spot in the home and what that would look like. It's not really something that has broken into the consumer space yet, even though companies like Amazon are rumored to be working on it.Raibert: We absolutely believe in the long run, robots will be in people's homes helping to take care of elderly relatives who now require outsiders to come in and help them do routine things like clean up or empty the dishwasher. I think you've seen our humanoid robot Atlas doing gymnastics and other kinds of athletic activity. Those projects have a very long, long-term focus on being able to build a very capable set of skills and abilities that could be used for that.But I think it's going to be some time before you see robots broadly in our homes. Mostly because people are still smarter than robots. People are still more dexterous and more mobile than robots. And so you need a more structured use case in order to justify them today. So are we going to go there? You bet. Are we working on it? Part of what we do is focused on that long-term progress that will enable us to use them very broadly that way. But are the current robots we're building going to be used that way? We're not doing that ourselves, and it's a tough problem to solve.<div type="image" title="Boston Dynamics" height="462" width="840" msid="75810751" hostid="261"></div>Eadicicco: How far away do you think that is?Raibert: People like us are always saying five or eight years, something like those timeframes. I'm not saying that there won't be something that looks a little bit more like an appliance in people's homes that also has some robot characteristics. But it will be very narrow focused probably if it's going to be successful, and also if it's going to be low enough cost.Perry: If you look at most of the industrial environments that we've been talking about or even in the home, there are robots available. But they're scoped to a very narrow set of tasks that are constrained to a very narrow set of environments. Raibert: I dream about the day when we'll have robots that have a very significant mobility perception and manipulation capability to do things in your home the way anybody could.Perry: One of the hard things that we have, at least in talking to customers, is to disabuse them that Spot is "Rosey the Robot" — that with one robot, you can do every single thing. But ultimately that's kind of the dream robotics scenario.Eadicicco: What do you think will be like the biggest breakthrough in robotics and like the next five years?Raibert: I don't really believe in breakthroughs the way the media likes to talk about it. There's so many different pieces to robots, all of which are making progress that even if you had a "breakthrough" in how well the camera worked, you'd still have 10 other systems. There's the power in the robot, and getting better batteries could really help. But that wouldn't just solve robotics.There's the perception of the cameras. Fake accounts are stealing donations to the PM CARES Fund — Here's to how to keep from getting scammed

<ul><li>The Delhi government launched a custom Google Map to help residents locate <keyword id="8979341" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="hunger-relief-centers">hunger relief centers</keyword> across the city.</li><li>Lunch will be served between 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm and dinner between 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm every day. </li><li>Since many people who really need this service may not necessarily own a phone or be familiar with <keyword id="97416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-maps">Google Maps</keyword>, it’s recommended that you either guide them through the process.</li></ul>Delhi has a large number of migrant workers and slum dwellers who are facing troubled times as the city is under lockdown leaving them without a job, shelter or a way to go home. To help them, the Delhi government launched a custom Google Maps platform where people can find hunger relief centres spread across the city — many of which are schools that have been turned into shelters for the needy.

 According to chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, over 500 such relief camps have been set up to help those without a place to go and no supplies to tide them through the lockdown. Each municipality should, on average, have at least two shelters.

 The relief centers will serve lunch between 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm and dinner between 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm every day. Even though everyone is welcome, social distancing will be strictly followed within the shelters under the watchful eye of a nodal officer appointed by the district magistrate. Since many of the people who really need this service may not necessarily own a phone or be familiar with Google Maps, it’s recommended that you either guide them through the process. How to use Delhi’s Google Map of hunger relief centers Anyone can access the map either from their laptop or mobile phones by clicking on the link shared by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) or navigating through the window above. You can zoom in and zoom out of the map the map to find your locality and the relief centers close by. The blue pins indicated schools that have been turned into shelters and the red pins are the government-owned camps. Clicking on a pin will reveal the address of a particular shelter. Once you’ve selected the relief center, since its a Google Map, you can also click on directions to see the best possible route to reach a particular camp. The entire list of shelters can also be found if you tap on #DelhiHungerReliefCentre on your mobile. Tapping the arrow next to shelter homes and school list will display all the respective options. Sivan said that the space agency was planning to have 25 launches. </li><li>All was going well for ISRO after the crashlanding of India's moon lander Vikram on the lunar surface in 2019.</li><li>The first setback of the year for ISRO came on March 4, when it had to call off the launch of GISAT-1, a day before its actual launch, owing to technical reasons. </li></ul>What would have been an insipid first half of the calendar year 2020 for the Indian space agency turned a bit interesting towards the end, with the government announcing its decision to open up the sector to private participation. At the start of 2020, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman and Secretary Department of Space K. Sivan said that the space agency was planning to have 25 launches -- including Aditya-L1 satellite, <keyword id="1512353" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Geo-Imaging-Satellite">Geo Imaging Satellite</keyword> (GISAT-1), realisation of Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) or small rocket (carrying capacity 500 kg), navigation satellite with indigenous atomic clocks and <keyword id="9550825" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-data-relay-satellite-system">Indian Data Relay Satellite System</keyword> (IDRSS), and GSAT-20 satellite with electric propulsion. Sivan also said India will embark on its third moon mission 'Chandrayaan-3' and attempt to land a lander on the lunar surface sometime in 2020-21. All was going well for ISRO after the crashlanding of India's moon lander Vikram on the lunar surface in 2019. The year began well ISRO with the launch of the 3,357 kg communication satellite GSAT-30 by the European space agency Arianespace rocket Ariane 5 on January 17. The ISRO also showcased its robot/half-humanoid -- Vyommitra - which was part of its human space mission programme 'Gaganyaan'. The first setback of the year for ISRO came on March 4, when it had to call off the launch of GISAT-1, a day before its actual launch, owing to technical reasons. The ISRO did not share any detail about the technical reasons, or the glitch, and its rectification since then. It is also not known when the satellite with a very good camera would be launched. Then came the Covid-19 lockdown within and outside India that had its cascading impact on ISRO's core plans like the realisation of SSLV, launch of GISAT-1, delay in the first test-flight of the rocket as part of Gaganyaan mission. "During the lockdown, industries that were supplying components were not working. Our own officials were not able to attend office. Further travel to Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh for satellite launch by the officials were not possible due to the lockdown," Sivan told IANS. It is also not known when ISRO will be able to restart its satellite launch operations. With coronavirus infection spreading fast in the county, ISRO also started work on developing a low-cost ventilator and sanitiser. Meanwhile, two positive developments happened for ISRO -- securing an Indian patent for its liquid cooling and heating garment (LCHG) suitable for space applications and for its method of manufacturing highland lunar soil simulant or simply lunar/moon soil. On May 16, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that Indian private sector will be a co-traveller in India's space-sector journey and a level-playing field will be provided for them in satellites, launches, and space-based services. She also said that a predictable policy and regulatory environment will be provided to private players. The future projects for planetary exploration, outer space travel and others are to be opened up for the private sector, adding there will be a liberal geo-spatial data policy for providing remote-sensing data to tech-entrepreneurs subject to various checks. Welcoming the announcement, sectoral experts suggested various models for restructuring of ISRO and also urged the government to set up an independent regulator and also enact necessary legislation. On June 24, the Union Cabinet decided to set up Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), making ISRO to focus on research and development (R&amp;D) of new technologies, exploration missions, and human spaceflight programme. Singh said the Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to set up IN-SPACe to provide a level playing field for private companies to use Indian space infrastructure. He also said the New Space India Limited (NSIL) will endeavour to re-orient space activities from a 'supply driven' model to 'demand driven' model, thereby ensuring optimum utilisation of the country's space assets. Former ISRO Chairman <keyword id="52158" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="madhavan-nair">Madhavan Nair</keyword> said there should be a national space law to define responsibilities and liabilities. Pointing out the role envisaged for IN-SPACe and the demand for a sectoral regulator, when queried whether the proposed body could be converted into the space sector regulator, Sivan told IANS: "IN-SPACe could be turned into a regulatory body when the necessary laws and regulations are in place." "We are on the job of getting ready the Space Activities Bill. It will define the space activities, liabilities and other aspects," he added. As part of the reform process, new navigation policy is also being proposed. Suitable changes in the remote sensing data policy as well as SATCOM policy are on the anvil to align them to an open and inclusive space sector, said Sivan. "The best is to establish an independent regulator -- <keyword id="9550824" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="space-regulatory-authority-of-india">Space Regulatory Authority of India</keyword> (SRAI) -- which will create a level-playing field for many of the emerging players," Narayan Prasad, Chief Operating Officer, satsearch, told IANS. Establishing an independent regulator could allow a systematic review and reforms on a continuous basis rather than one-off announcements, Prasad said. As per current scheme of things, IN-SPACe will have its own directorates for technical, legal, safety and security, monitoring as well as activities promotion for assessing the private sector's needs and coordination of the activities. IN-SPACe would have a board and representatives from industry, academia and the government, Sivan said. "Initially, IN-SPACe will be manned by people from the existing space setup. Later, people from outside will be taken in. It will have its funds from the budgetary allocations for the DoS. The new body may not need big financial allocations," Sivan remarked. Stressing that the ISRO's importance will not diminish with the entry of IN-SPACe, Sivan said all the existing centres - manufacturing, services, rocket launch centres - would continue to be with the ISRO. "The ISRO will be involved in research and development in advanced technologies, human space missions. It will also share its technological expertise with the private parties. The proposed new body will not disturb the existing ones. It will be another autonomous body," Sivan said. Industry officials are hoping to see further steps being taken by the government regarding the space sector during the second half of 2020. But as regards the satellite launches - domestic as well as foreign for a fee - by ISRO during the year depends on the spread or control of coronavirus and the resultant lockdown.
