Kennedy International Airport. </p><p>While Hawaii may have unique restrictions like an agricultural inspection (more on that later), it's a simple drive to the airport, and I've never had to race to catch a flight because of crowds. </p><h3><strong>Getting to Oahu</strong></h3><p>Getting to Oahu is pretty straightforward: You have to take a plane. Since Honolulu is home to the state's major flight hub, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport</strong></p><p>This is the only <a href="https://airports.hawaii.gov/hnl/flights/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">airport</a> on Oahu, and airlines such as Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Air Canada, and more all service it with regular flights. </p><p>Since I like to support local businesses, I prefer to fly Hawaiian Airlines whenever I can. It has direct flights to and from San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Sydney, and other major cities. Hawaiian Airlines also frequently has sales on fares. </p><p>Daniel K. Inouye International Airport is based on the edge of Honolulu proper, and it takes anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic, to get to the airport from Waikiki via ride-share, rental car, or shuttle.</p><p><a href="https://go808express.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">GO808Express</a> is a locally owned and operated private airport-shuttle company that services the entire island and starts at $45 for a one-way trip. You can take the bus to different parts of the island and have a good time, but it will take a while to get around. </p><p>Instead, I recommend renting a car for at least a day or two, so you can get to the North Shore or Kailua. They have the best beaches, amenities, and rooms.</li></ul><p>As someone who grew up on Oahu, I get excited any time a friend from the mainland visits because I know they're in for a treat.</p><p>Oahu has the right balance of urban activity and natural beauty to keep you occupied, from world-class surfing at Pipeline to historical spots like Iolani Palace. As the most developed island, it's also where you'll find the most restaurants, shops, breweries, and perhaps most importantly, hotels.</p><p>Oahu seems to have the most hotel options in all of <keyword id="11940260" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hawaii" source="Orion">Hawaii</keyword>, and finding the right one might feel overwhelming. You can stay in town (what we call Honolulu proper) or Waikiki, and you'll be central to everything, but also in the middle of a lot of busy urban activity. You can escape to the North Shore for a slower-paced surf vibe, but then you'll be far from most things to do. </p><p>As an Oahu local, I've spent significant time in almost every hotel, either on a staycation or while visiting family and friends. And while it might seem like every hotel lining Waikiki is somewhat the same, trust me, they're not. A select few offer the best locations, amenities, and rooms, and the best strategy is to focus on what you want to do the most and apply that to my list of choices below. </p><p>These are the only hotels I feel confident recommending to friends and family, knowing they'll have the Hawaiian vacation they've always envisioned. Yet I constantly missed the food of my hometown in Hawaii. </p><p>I grew up on Oahu and live here now as an adult and feel like I'm in on a well-kept secret that Hawaii is home to some of the best food in the world. From old-school eateries that have been around for decades to new spots that rival the trendy restaurants opening in New York, my favorite places to eat are often rooted in a strong sense of place and take inspiration from the local ingredients of Hawaii, like haupia (coconut) and fresh seafood.</p><p>In my opinion, the best things to eat feature local ingredients prominently, so you'll eat particularly well if you prioritize the places serving dishes that you can't easily find on the mainland and are very tied to Hawaii's history. </p><p>For centuries, Native Hawaiians sustained themselves from the land and sea with food like poi (taro root fermented, baked, and then pounded into a paste-like consistency), but <a href="https://hdoa.hawaii.gov/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/HISTORY-OF-AGRICULTURE-IN-HAWAII.pdf">European colonization</a> led to the <a href="https://evols.library.manoa.hawaii.edu/bitstream/10524/601/JL31103.pdf" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">industrialization</a> of Hawaii's land into sugar and pineapple plantations, which brought in <a href="https://www.hawaii.edu/uhwo/clear/home/HawaiiLaborHistory.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">immigrants</a> from places like Portugal, Japan, and China to work laborers, bringing over foods like rice, li hing mui (sour plum) and pao doce (Portugese sweet bread).</p><p>As a result, the local cuisine is now a combination of Asian and Pacific flavors plus a dash of Western influence that you likely can't find anywhere else. If you order the whole-fish catch of the day, he even comes back to cut it for you. Their Dortmunder Mifflin is a German-style lager with hints of fresh papaya and honeycomb. If you're not a fan of beer, you'll be satisfied with their seltzer flavors as well. Head over to the poke counter at any <a href="https://www.foodland.com/our-stores-poke" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Foodland</a>, which is found across the island, to grab some fish for the beach. I'm a fan of the Spicy Hawaiian, which combines limu (seaweed) with spicy mayo. If the weather is sunny and the waves are good, it's a guarantee that I'm going surfing and spending time outside. If it's stormy, you'll likely find me in an atmospheric local coffee shop or brewery or admiring exhibits in a museum. </p><p>It's easy to find so many different fun things to do on a tropical island like Oahu — just don't forget to learn about the history of the islands. This land was once colonized, and the Hawaiian people and their culture were nearly wiped out due to foreign diseases such as <a href="https://www.history.com/news/hawaii-monarchy-downfall-measles-outbreak#:~:text=During%20the%2019th%20and%20early,lives%20of%20the%20island's%20residents.">smallpox</a> and discriminatory laws. </p><p>Even in current times, while Hawaiian culture has experienced a vibrant resurgence (like the Merrie Monarch Festival, which celebrates hula each year in Hilo), I ask you to keep this in mind and be respectful to the locals and the places you visit while here. Leave no trace behind, and if you see <a href="https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/pacific-islands/marine-life-viewing-guidelines/viewing-marine-wildlife-hawaii">wildlife</a>, like a monk seal on the beach or a turtle in the water, keep a safe distance. </p><p>With that said, here's how you can plan a memorable trip on Oahu, starting with a dip in the ocean at lesser-known beaches, followed by tourist-free hikes, and must-visit cultural and historical attractions.</p><p>Just keep in mind that Oahu is the most populated and visited island in Hawaii, so you will probably run into crowds. Try to plan accordingly; parking might take a bit of time, or traffic could slow things down. You should start your day early to beat the rush (and the hot sun) for popular hikes or beaches.</p><p>Of course, some places are worth braving the crowds, and I'll share my tips on how to traverse them best, below. </p><h3><strong>My favorite lesser-known beaches on Oahu</strong></h3><p>If you're visiting Hawaii, you're likely planning to enjoy our beautiful beaches with their year-round warm water and soft sand. I spend nearly all my free time at the beach, whether sun-bathing or surfing, so I know the difference that a noisy crowd can make when it comes to affecting your beach experience. </p><p>The beaches listed below have public bathrooms and showers — as many on Oahu do — but it's also possible that you'll stumble upon a beach that's a little more secluded or residential and has no amenities, such as Lanikai Beach in Kailua. </p><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Beach with bright blue ocean, mountains, and blue sky" height="1772" width="2363" msid="91770125" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Yokohama Bay</strong></p><p>If you're willing to venture outside of Honolulu, I highly recommend checking out the remote <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tripadvisor.com%2FAttraction_Review-g6437170-d153925-Reviews-Yokohama_Bay-Makaha_Oahu_Hawaii.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Yokohama Bay</a>, which is located at the northwestern tip of Oahu and is one of my favorite beaches. It's about an hour-long drive from Honolulu but well worth the trek. It's where all the pro surfers hang out, especially when the waves are firing in wintertime. If I'm heading north, I stop at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tripadvisor.com%2FAttraction_Review-g60647-d8489347-Reviews-Pua_ena_Point_Beach_Park-Haleiwa_Oahu_Hawaii.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Puaena Point</a>, located just past Haleiwa. With a small strip of sand to spread your towel on, the small cove is protected by a reef, so it's swimmable and suitable for beginner surfers, even during winter. Keep a lookout here — I often notice turtles wading by. </p><h3><strong>The best hikes to avoid crowds</strong></h3><p>Make time for hikes during your trip to Oahu so that you can take in magnificent views only accessible on foot. Oahu has a majestic landscape of ridges, craters, waterfalls, and more that are worth significant time on your itinerary, no matter your skill level. </p><div type="image" title="Grass-covered cliffs and blue ocean with bright blue sky" height="2847" width="3797" msid="91770132" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>The Pillbox Trail</strong></p><p>In Kailua, <a href="https://www.alltrails.com/trail/hawaii/oahu/kaiwa-ridge-lanikai-pillbox-trail?u=i" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">the Pillbox Trail</a> is a somewhat steep but short ridge hike that provides a stunning view of Lanikai Beach and the Mokulua Islands (what we call the Mokes) from former military bunkers. If you turn around, the lush green views of the Koolau Mountains are in full view. This hike is popular, but I love coming for a sunrise hike. Not only is it less crowded, but watching the sunrise above the horizon is so memorable; a camera can't do it justice. </p><p><strong>Waimano Falls</strong></p><p>If you're chasing waterfalls, I recommend <a href="https://www.alltrails.com/trail/hawaii/oahu/waimano-falls-trail?u=i" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Waimano Falls</a>, which branches off from Manana Trail in Aiea. The moderately challenging hike takes about two hours, but the reward is multiple waterfalls and water pools for swimming. The individual trails are typically shorter and very family-friendly but can connect to a longer, more immersive experience in the forest if you choose. During the first year of the pandemic, when options to go out were slim, I spent most of my time here wandering past mossy stones, bamboo forests, and tranquil streams.</p><p>Keep in mind that many hikes on Oahu start in residential neighborhoods, so I ask that you be respectful and quiet. I also rarely hike without sunscreen, water, and snacks, and take any trash with me when I leave. If the weather is rainy, don't venture out, the mud gets slippery. Safety first!</p><h3><strong>Must-visit historical attractions</strong></h3><p>One reason I always recommend Oahu for first-time visitors to Hawaii is because of the important cultural and historical sites. Both museums host after-hours events where drinks are served.</p><h3><strong>The places that are worth braving the crowds</strong></h3><p>I would be remiss if you skipped out on certain things just because they're more likely to be crowded, especially if you're a first-time visitor. It retains old island charm and is home to some of the most picturesque beaches and valleys in the world. </p><p>I try to make it to Maui a few times a year, but I know that crowds and tourist traps can take away from that sense of rural, remote paradise. As such, I've carved out a go-to list of off-the-beaten-path places that honor the Maui I grew up with: unspoiled, raw, and visually extraordinary. </p><p>From secret beaches devoid of crowds to incredible snorkeling and surfing spots, as well as hidden hikes tucked inside verdant valleys, and volcano craters that peek out from above the clouds, these activities will allow you to enjoy Maui like a knowledgeable local. </p><p>I only ask that you be careful and follow the Hawaiian expression of mālama ʻāina (it's our responsibility to respect the land) and leave places just as you found them so that future generations can enjoy them. Take your trash and never take things like lava rock or sand back home. </p><div type="image" title="A man jumping off a rock into the ocean." height="1667" width="2500" msid="89120931" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>The best secret beaches to avoid crowds</strong></p><p>The beach is probably the thing you're most excited about in Hawaii. When I have free time, I too can be found surfing or relaxing on the sand, so I know that a crowded, touristy beach is a totally different experience than unwinding on a quieter, lesser-known stretch of waterfront. </p><p><a href="https://www.gohawaii.com/islands/maui/regions/south-maui/makena-beach" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Makena Beach</a>, known as "Big Beach" to locals, is a popular Maui beach that runs for two-thirds of a mile. Along Big Beach, you can find more secluded spots that crowds don't know about, like Oneuli Beach or Paako Cove. </p><p>The south shore of Maui is also known for its stunning, swimmable beaches like Wailea Beach, where the Four Seasons and other resorts are located.</p><p>A lesser-known area on the south shore is Chang's Beach, which is a small pocket of sand tucked into the residential area of Wailea.</p><p>You'll also want to grab your camera and check out Maui's gorgeous colored-sand beaches, like <a href="http://mauiguidebook.com/adventures/red-sand-beach/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Kaihalulu Beach</a>'s red sand and <a href="https://www.hawaii-guide.com/maui/beaches/black-sand-beach-maui" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Honokalani Beach</a>'s black sand made from tiny eroded lava pebbles. </p><p>I also want to share a few warnings when it comes to Hawaiian beaches. If lifeguard signs indicate there's a strong current or riptide, please don't try to swim into the ocean. Also be careful about where you step or kick, as you might hit a sea urchin, called <em>wana</em> in Hawaiian, tucked into a rock and get their spines in your foot. I've gotten a few stuck during surf sessions and limped around in pain for days. </p><p>On that note, about 9 to 12 days after a full moon, the south and west shores commonly have <a href="https://www.to-hawaii.com/jellyfishcalendar.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">box jellyfish</a>, which sting. If you see a jellyfish or purple Portuguese man-of-war on the beach, I wouldn't risk getting in the water.</p><div type="image" title="Two people surfing in the ocean." height="1667" width="2500" msid="89120932" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Where to find uncrowded waves for all levels</strong></p><p>Surfing is iconic to Hawaii, and besides Oahu, Maui is the best island to ride waves. There are spots for every level, but some are dangerous and unforgiving, so always follow the Hawaii lifeguard saying: "When in doubt, don't go out." </p><p>For those with little experience on a board, I suggest the beginner-friendly waves at Guardrails, which isn't as crowded as fellow beginner spots, Launiupoko or Breakwall. But newbie surfers should never go out alone, so consider enlisting the help of an instructor, like from the woman-run surfing school, <a href="https://www.mauisurfergirls.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Maui Surfer Girls</a>. </p><p>Those with a little more experience will have a lot of fun at Olowalu, which breaks in multiple places so you can avoid crowds.</p><p>Advanced surfers have their picks too, like the world-famous Honolua Bay, known for its glassy barrels, or Hookipa. Even if you're not on their level, you should still stop by to see these surfers do their thing — it's like watching magic. </p><div type="image" title="Two people walking in the ocean water." height="1667" width="2500" msid="89120933" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Go under the sea at standout snorkeling spots</strong></p><p>With calmer waters and fewer crowds than Oahu, Maui is the best main Hawaiian island for snorkeling, in my opinion. </p><p>I recommend the south shore especially. A lesser-known spot is La Perouse Bay, which is located as far south as the road allows and requires a brief hike through lava rock, so wear closed-toe shoes. Look for Makena Alanui Road and when you park, make sure you don't park on lava rock — your tires will thank you. Go in the early morning and you might catch a glimpse of spinner dolphins.</p><p>Or, <a href="https://redlinerafting.com/tours/molokini-snorkeling-tours-two-hour-trip/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow nofollow noopener sponsored sponsored">book a trip</a> to snorkel or dive around the crescent-shaped Molokini Crater, the state's only island marine sanctuary. With crystal-clear waters, you can catch glimpses of vibrant fish, and if you go during winter, maybe even a breaching humpback whale. </p><p><strong>Check out these under-the-radar hikes</strong></p><p>One reason why Hawaii is such a great place to visit (and live) is that you can easily go from lying on the beach to hiking deep in the forest on the same day. Along the Road to Hana are countless waterfalls, like the Seven Sacred Pools.</p><p>A hidden waterfall hike is Kopiliula Falls, a moderate two-mile trail that will have you scrambling upstream and then down a rope to the pool below the waterfall. To find the trailhead, look for mile marker 21 along the Road to Hāna. </p><p>Whenever you hike, wear appropriate shoes and keep your electronics protected (or hidden in the car). Bring sunscreen, lots of water, and snacks, and pay attention to the weather and your skill level. Many people get injured or killed and need rescuing when they overestimate themselves or venture into risky territory. </p><div type="image" title="A woman with a young child who is feeding a goat." height="1666" width="2222" msid="89120937" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Visit a farm to connect with nature</strong></p><p>One of my favorite qualities about Maui is its abundance of farms. A brief stop or tour at a farm will give you an inside look into how people in Hawaii take care of and live off of the land.</p><p><a href="https://www.surfinggoatdairy.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Surfing Goat Dairy Farm</a>, located at the base of Haleakala in Kula, is known for its adorable goats and creamy goat cheese. Or visit <a href="https://www.aliikulalavender.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Alii Kula Lavender</a>, a lavender and botanical farm lined with fragrant lavender fields. </p><p>Foodies will want to book the Maui Pineapple Tour, which takes you through the <a href="https://mauipineappletour.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Maui Gold Pineapple Plantation</a> to learn about Hawaii's plantation history and iconic export, and then to the award-winning Haliimaile Distilling Company for lunch and libations.  </p><div type="image" title="A forested valley." height="1667" width="2500" msid="89120938" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>If all of the above is too much, or you only have time to do three things on Maui, make it these:</strong></p><p>Visit <a href="https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/dsp/parks/maui/iao-valley-state-monument/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Iao Valley</a>, which is known for its historic and spiritual value, or book a guided tour through the Hawaii Nature Center. </p><div type="image" title="A small waterfall in the middle of a forested mountan." height="1667" width="2500" msid="89120941" hostid="261"></div><p>Drive the winding 52-mile-long Hana Highway or the <a href="https://roadtohana.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow nofollow noopener sponsored sponsored">Road to Hana</a>. It's a famous road with breathtaking views that take you across 59 bridges from north Maui to Hana, on the east side of the island. Leave early so you have lots of daylight to navigate the tricky turns. The drive could take as little as under three hours or, if you make stops, as long as six. Be considerate of locals as the road can get backed up with tourists slowing down to take in the views.</p><p>I recommend stopping at one of the roadside stands that sell fresh tropical fruit, like dragon fruit, or other snacks. Fill up on gas while you're in town because your options are very limited on the road. </p><div type="image" title="A Hawaiian mountain range" height="1960" width="4032" msid="89120942" hostid="261"></div><p>If there's one thing everyone should do on Maui, it's a stop at the majestic <a href="https://www.nps.gov/hale/index.htm" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Haleakala National Park</a>. For a truly magical memory, I recommend a sunrise reservation, which you can make <a href="https://www.nps.gov/hale/planyourvisit/sunrise.htm" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">online here</a>.</p><p>Watching the sky turn orange and pink through the mystical clouds and over the volcano is one of my favorite childhood memories. The Leleiwi Overlook, a hidden gem at mile marker 17.5 and accessible by a short trail, is worth a stop. </p><p>Even though it's Hawaii, it gets very cold at the high altitude so dress accordingly. However, like visiting the rest of the state, there's really only one mode of transportation: air <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword>. </p><p>Once there, the island itself is rather easy to navigate. Here's all you need to know about getting to the Valley Isle.</p><p><strong>Getting to Maui</strong></p><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="A view of passengers inside Kahului Airport terminal in Maui, Hawaii" height="800" width="1066" msid="89120945" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Kahului Airport </strong></p><p>As the second-busiest airport in the state of <keyword id="11940260" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hawaii" source="Orion">Hawaii</keyword>, Maui's main airport is <a href="http://airports.hawaii.gov/ogg/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Kahului Airport</a>, offering overseas and interisland flights from <a href="https://airports.hawaii.gov/ogg/flights/airlines/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">10 different airlines</a>.</p><p>It's likely you'll be arriving via connecting flight from Honolulu's Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, the state's flight hub that sees<a href="https://www.flightconnections.com/flights-to-honolulu-hnl" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored"> nonstop flights</a> from Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Chicago, and a few other cities, though some <keyword id="12273770" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="destinations" source="Orion">destinations</keyword> fly direct to Maui as well.</p><p>From the airport to your final destination, you can get a rental car (more on that below), or book an airport shuttle like <a href="https://www.speedishuttle.com/maui-airport-shuttles" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">SpeediShuttle</a>, which travels to Lahaina, Wailea, and Napili and costs less than $50 per person.</p><p>If you're traveling on a budget, you can take bus route 35 (Haiku Islander) or 40 (Upcountry Islander) from the airport; however, if you're staying on the west or south parts of Maui, you'll probably need to make a connection. On a normal weekend in mid-July, I was on Maui heading back to Oahu when I saw people waiting in the hot sun for over an hour. If your flight is around midday on Saturday or Sunday, I recommend arriving as early as three hours ahead of time if you don't have TSA PreCheck, or use the MyTSA mobile app to get the estimated wait times in real-time. </p><p><strong>Kapalua Airport</strong></p><p>Serving West Maui is <a href="http://airports.hawaii.gov/jhm/">Kapalua Airport</a>, a small commuter airport with a single runway used by Mokulele Airlines with flights to Honolulu. This no-frills airport is located about seven miles north of Lahaina, making it an option if you're planning on staying on the west side of Maui. You can reach Kapalua Airport by car or airport shuttle. </p><p><strong>Hana Airport </strong></p><p>Located three miles northwest of Hana, <a href="http://airports.hawaii.gov/hnm/">Hana Airport</a> is a small, simple airport offering flights to and from Honolulu on Mokulele Airlines. Hana Airport is accessible by car, but unfortunately, there is no taxi service or public transportation. A prearranged shuttle, such as one provided by your hotel, can be scheduled. You would only fly into Hana Airport if you don't want to stray from the east side of Maui during your trip, or won't make it to Kahului in time for your flight. </p><div type="image" title="A car on the road to Hana next to a waterfall." height="800" width="1066" msid="89120946" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Getting around Maui </strong></p><p>Maui is the second-largest island in the Hawaiian island chain, and because it's more rural and less developed, relying on walking is impracticable. If you really want to explore less crowded beaches and hikes, trust me when I say that you're going to want your own rental car. </p><p>That being said, it is possible to see a good portion of Maui by bus, which is the only public transit option. You could also try a rideshare, but venturing into rural areas, like Hana, means it could take a while to get a car if you even get one at all. With a strong agricultural sector, Maui has many farm-to-table — or line-to-table — options to provide guests with fresh, tropical-inspired fare that's hard to beat. </p><p>Whenever I go to Maui from my home base on Oahu, there are certain spots that I make time to visit, no matter what my itinerary is, because they're that good. As a local, I also prefer to support local businesses, especially ones that have been around for generations.</p><p>The pandemic forced many local eateries in Hawaii to close (RIP Like Like Inn, which was a <a href="https://www.bizjournals.com/pacific/news/2020/04/24/like-like-drive-inn-to-close-after-nearly-70-years.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Honolulu staple for over 70 years</a>). The menu is limited; there are only two flavors of poke available, spicy and traditional (shoyu, aka soy sauce).</p><p>I always go for spicy ahi. This isn't mainland poke either, this is real local poke made with hunks of firm but juicy ahi and a creamy spicy mayonnaise topped with salty furikake, a Japanese seasoning made of seaweed and sesame seeds.  </p><div type="image" title="The outside of a Hawaiian restaurant" height="1667" width="2500" msid="89120958" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Monkeypod Kitchen</strong></p><p>There is perhaps no better place on all of Maui for a date night or girls' night than <a href="https://www.monkeypodkitchen.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Monkeypod Kitchen</a>. There are two locations in Lahaina and Wailea (I'm a fan of the Lahaina location as it's right on the water) and each serves farm-to-table cuisine with tropical flair.</p><p>Not only is the food delicious — the menu changes seasonally and aims to support locals — the aesthetic is on point with string lights and breezy lanais, and the bill won't break the bank.</p><p>Start with a mai tai — and not just because we're in Hawaii — as its modern take on the tropical classic comes topped with a whipped lilikoi (passion fruit) that awakens the taste buds. It might just be my favorite mai tai in the entire state.</p><p>Be sure to save room for dessert. Its kitchen serves pub fare with a local twist, but the real star is the drinks section, specifically its limited-release beers. </p><p>If you're not a brew snob, you can also try the tropical-inspired hard seltzers. I like the POG — aka passion-orange-guava, a beloved juice from everyone's childhood — seltzer. The company doesn't sell its seltzer on the US mainland, so drink up while you can. </p><div type="image" title="A bowl of shave ice." height="1666" width="2222" msid="89121053" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice</strong></p><p>Shave ice is a must on any trip to Hawaii, and Maui has quite a few good options. But when I'm on Maui, there is no doubt that I'm choosing the award-winning <a href="https://www.ululanishawaiianshaveice.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice</a>, now located in Lahaina.</p><p>The company makes its own syrups with real fruit juice or purees, and you can taste the difference. I'm a firm believer that you should always order a scoop of vanilla ice cream to go under your shave ice so that it melts into creamy deliciousness. If you're celebrating an anniversary, birthday, or another special occasion, this is the place to be. It's also expensive, so budget for that splurge meal. </p><p>The menu is so fresh that it's updated daily with the name of the fisher and where the fish was caught. <ul class="summary-list"><li>AirlineRatings.com has named <keyword id="12427817" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="air-new-zealand" source="Orion">Air New Zealand</keyword> as the safest airline in the world for 2022.</li><li>The organization publishes the top 20 list every year, and ANZ beat out 2021's top carrier, Australia-based <keyword id="12059604" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="qantas" source="Orion">Qantas</keyword>.</li></ul><p>AirlineRatings.com, a source for airline safety and product reviews, <a href="https://www.airlineratings.com/news/top-twenty-safest-airlines-2022/">has revealed its top 20 safest carriers in the world for 2022</a>, with five US <keyword id="11898285" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airlines" source="Orion">airlines</keyword> making the list.</p><p>Established in 2013, AirlineRatings.com is a trusted website that rates airline safety, inflight products, and COVID-19 compliance of 385 worldwide carriers on a unique seven-star scale. Every year, AirlineRatings.com releases a list of the top safest airlines in the world, and, this year, Air New Zealand snatched the title from Australia-based Qantas. </p><p>AirlineRatings.com editor-in-chief Geoffrey Thomas explained in a press release that "there is very little between the top 20, they are all standouts."</p><p>"Our top 20 safest airlines 2022 are always at the forefront of safety innovation, operational excellence, and the launching of new more advanced aircraft like the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787."</p><p>Air New Zealand is the safest airline in the world for 2022, according to AirlineRatings.com, with carriers like <keyword id="12068324" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="etihad-airways" source="Orion">Etihad Airways</keyword>, <keyword id="12915579" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tap-air-portugal" source="Orion">TAP Air Portugal</keyword>, Qatar, Qantas, Lufthansa, and Finnair also making the list. Five US carriers also earned top spots, including Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, American Airlines, and United Airlines.</p><p>According to Thomas, ANZ earned the title because of its superb incident record, number of technological innovations and cockpit advancements, comprehensive pilot training, and low fleet age, which averages just 6.8 years.</p><p>AirlineRatings also said ANZ's pilots operate in harsh weather conditions and remote environments, adding to the carrier's safety ranking. Moreover, the airline excelled in COVID policies and practices.</p><p>"Air New Zealand has won countless awards and has a firm focus on safety and its customers and over the past 18 months, COVID-19 has brought yet another new dimension to the challenges," Thomas said.</p><p>According to the organization, the 2022 awards were based on six factors, including crashes in the past five years, serious incidents over two years, audits from aviation governing bodies, government audits, fleet age, and COVID policies.</p><p>However, Thomas clarified that all airlines experience incidents and that it is not always the fault of the carrier when things go wrong, but sometimes rather the aircraft or engine manufacturer. </p><p>"It is the way the flight crew handles these incidents that determines a good airline from an unsafe one," he said.</p><p>There were several ranking shifts in 2022 <a href="https://www.airlineratings.com/news/top-twenty-safest-airlines-2021/">compared to 2021</a>, most notably were Qantas losing its crown to Air New Zealand after a three-year winning streak, Southwest Airlines falling out of the top 20 after ranking number 13 last year, and TAP Air Portugal being named Europe's safest carrier after not making the list in 2021.</p><p>Here's a closer look at AirlineRatings' top 20 safest airlines in the world.</p><h2>20.
