One of the most frequently asked questions I get is about hotels, and not because there is a shortage of options, but because there are so many places to consider.</p><p>My Croatian fiancé and I also manage rental apartments of our own, and I can tell you that the price of accommodation will vary drastically depending on when you visit. July and August are in peak season and the price of lodging during this time can double. If you're on a budget, try to <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword> outside of this time or book at least two months in advance. </p><p>While there are plenty of hotels in Dubrovnik, a rental apartment offers the best value. You can book a spacious one-bedroom apartment via <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.airbnb.com%2F" target="_blank" rel="nofollow nofollow noopener sponsored sponsored nofollow sponsored nofollow sponsored nofollow sponsored">airbnb</a> or <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2F" target="_blank" rel="nofollow nofollow nofollow nofollow noopener sponsored sponsored sponsored sponsored nofollow sponsored">booking.com</a> starting at about $60 a night, depending on the time of year. In contrast, even cheap hotels will start at around $150 a night. Plus, so many locals live off of the money from rental apartments making it a great way to help support the economy. </p><p>If a hotel is more your style, there are plenty of great options, including dozens of 4- and 5-star hotels, with some more affordable and well-appointed 3-star hotels, too. Hotels tend to book up quickly in the summer, so reserve your room at least a few months in advance. </p><p>Keep reading for my top hotel picks, plus the best neighborhoods to consider if you're booking a vacation rental.</p><div type="image" title="Dubrovnik travel guide Dario Garofalo for Insider" height="4480" width="5973" msid="91921863" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Hilton Imperial Hotel </strong></p><p>You'll immediately recognize the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hilton.com%2Fen%2Fhotels%2Fdbvhihi-hilton-imperial-dubrovnik%2F" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored nofollow sponsored">Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik</a> for its salmon and evergreen facade perched outside Dubrovnik's Pile Gate. What was once a 20th-century villa is now a modern 5-star hotel, which still incorporates Art-Deco design in the restaurant and bar. While the price per night is a bit steep, ranging from $350-$600, you are paying for both luxury and the location.</p><p>Rooms have premium sea and Old Town views, and the hotel is just steps away from the Old Town entrance. My clients have said that the service here is superb, making it a good choice for Hilton Loyalists. </p><p><strong>Hotel Excelsior</strong></p><p>This hotel will always be a personal favorite of mine, as it was where my mom had her destination wedding in 2017. That's why I'll be the first to tell you that <a href="https://www.adriaticluxuryhotels.com/hotel-excelsior-dubrovnik/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored nofollow sponsored">Hotel Excelsior</a> is worth the splurge if you're looking for a luxurious, boutique hotel with a prime location.</p><p>This 5-star hotel is set in a former 19th-century villa, offering 139 spacious rooms and 19 luxury suites overlooking the Adriatic Sea and historic Old Town. I love how the chic and modern interior contrasts against the historic limestone exterior, blending in effortlessly with the natural environment. Don't miss the seaside bar and rustic stone pool overlooking the Old Town. </p><div type="image" title="Dubrovnik travel guide Dario Garofalo for Insider" height="3360" width="4480" msid="91921868" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Rixos Hotel </strong></p><p>I am usually not a fan of the bigger hotels in Dubrovnik, as I think it takes away from the quaint charm the city has to offer. However, I always make an exception for <a href="https://www.rixos.com/hr/hotel-resort/rixos-premium-dubrovnik" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored nofollow sponsored">Rixos Hotel</a>. I planned a destination wedding for a client here and fell in love with the location and open space.</p><p>The recently renovated 5-star hotel has over 300 rooms across 14 floors, all directly overlooking the vast Adriatic horizon, and is only about a 10-minute walk to the Old Town. Within the hotel complex are three restaurants, three bars, a spa with a traditional hammam, and an Insta-worthy pool and beach bar. I especially recommend Rixos for honeymooners or a family looking to splurge on a luxurious stay. </p><p><strong>Hotel Porto</strong></p><p>Newly opened in 2021, <a href="https://www.hotelporto.hr/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored nofollow sponsored">Hotel Porto</a> is a fashionable, boutique hotel that typically fits most budgets. With only 36 rooms, each with a private balcony terrace, this space feels particularly intimate in comparison to other hotel offerings, but what I love most is the prime location next to the Port of Dubrovnik, 15 minutes from the Old Town, and 15 minutes from Lapad.</p><p>If you like to sleep in, go ahead and do it: breakfast is served until noon. I also recommend dining at the on-site restaurant, which offers Mediterranean fusion for lunch and dinner.</p><div type="image" title="Dubrovnik travel guide Dario Garofalo for Insider" height="4480" width="5973" msid="91921870" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Hotel Mlini </strong></p><p>When travelers tell me they want to stay somewhere peaceful outside of the Old Town, while still steps away from several beaches, bars, and restaurants, I send them to <a href="https://www.maistra.com/hr/hotel-mlini-dubrovnik" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored nofollow sponsored">Hotel Mlini</a>. Tucked away in the quaint village of Mlini, this 4-star hotel sits along the seaside promenade and has spacious seaside rooms and suites, all decorated with blue and green undertones inspired by the surrounding coast.</p><p>Amenities include indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a restaurant, a bar, and a pizzeria. Hotel Mlini is a 15-minute bus ride or 30-minute boat ride from Dubrovnik's Old Town.</p><p><strong>Hotel Adria</strong></p><p>To see the most breathtaking sunsets over the Bay of Lapad and the neighboring Elafiti Islands every night, book a stay at <a href="https://www.hotel-adria-dubrovnik.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Hotel Adria</a>. Sleek floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the harbor in Gruž, and it's centrally located between the Old Town and the popular area of Lapad. The rooms are spacious with seaside balconies and amenities include a restaurant and bar. I always tell travelers Hotel Adria is a reliable option if you're looking for a central, yet chic hotel with great value for the money. </p><div type="image" title="Dubrovnik travel guide Dario Garofalo for Insider Hotel Lero" height="4220" width="5626" msid="91921871" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Hotel Lero</strong></p><p><a href="https://hotel-lero.hr/hr/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Hotel Lero</a> is the first hotel I recommend when travelers tell me they are looking for a budget-friendly hotel in central Dubrovnik. It's one of the most affordable options with prices starting at around $150 a night for standard yet comfortable rooms and suites.</p><p>There is also an outdoor pool and wellness center, and it's strategically located between the Old Town and the Bay of Lapad. I also love that this 4-star hotel is within walking distance of everything. The Bosnian restaurant, Taj Mahal, is one of my favorite restaurants in town and is right next door.</p><p><strong>Hotel Kompas</strong></p><p>Steps away from bars and restaurants along the Uvala promenade, <a href="https://www.adriaticluxuryhotels.com/hr/hotel-kompas-dubrovnik/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Hotel Kompas</a> is my favorite hotel in the Lapad area. The chic and airy décor feels upscale but not pretentious and most rooms within this 4-star hotel provide a view overlooking the Bay of Lapad and sunset beach. Surrounded by Mediterranean pines and overlooking the Old Town of Cavtat, the hotel exudes a tranquil atmosphere with all the luxury trimmings of a 5-star hotel. Accommodations range from standard seaside rooms to apartment-style suites with private terraces.</p><p>There's also a spa, indoor and outdoor saltwater pools, and on-site restaurants and bars, including one of my personal favorites, Spinaker, which is so picturesque that it's one of my top choices for my own wedding in 2023. </p><div type="image" title="Dubrovnik travel guide Dario Garofalo for Insider Club Dubrovnik Sunny Hotel" height="4480" width="5973" msid="91921877" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Club Dubrovnik Sunny Hotel </strong></p><p>If you're traveling with kids and looking for a beach vacation on a budget, consider <a href="https://www.valamar.com/hr/hoteli-dubrovnik/valamar-club-dubrovnik" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Club Dubrovnik Sunny Hotel</a>. Located in the lush peninsula of Babin Kuk, this beachfront hotel is surrounded by some of my favorite beach bars, including <a href="https://www.thebeachdubrovnik.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Copacabana Beach Bar</a> and <a href="https://coral-beach-club.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Coral Beach Club</a>. It's also a part of the Valamar Hotel chain, so guests receive access to the sister resort's outdoor pool, sports courts, aquatic sports, nearby beaches, and entertainment for kids, without the 5-star prices. </p><h3>Here are the best areas to look for a vacation rental apartment in Dubrovnik.</h3><p><strong>Ploče / Pile</strong>: This area is directly outside of the Old Town, within a 5-10 minute walk. It has some of the best views overlooking the Adriatic, however, be prepared to climb many stairs in either of these areas. </p><p><strong>Gruž</strong>: Located in the main port of Dubrovnik, this area is bustling with coffee shops, farmers' markets, small shopping centers, and more. It's about a 10- to 15-minute walk to the Old Town or a short bus ride. </p><p><strong>Lapad</strong>: This is a great place to base yourself if you want to be next to the many restaurants, bars, and beaches. Lapad is about 20 minutes outside of the Old Town by foot or a short bus ride. </p><p><strong>Župa</strong>: While I might be biased since I live here, I think this is one of the most underrated areas to stay in Dubrovnik. I find it to be popular with European tourists who want to escape the chaos of the city center and relax along the pristine coastline. You'll find plenty of rental apartments right on the sea, and be steps away from many restaurants and the main mall of Dubrovnik. Župa is about a 15-minute bus ride from town or you can take a <a href="https://www.adriana-cavtat.com/boat-tours/regular-boat-service/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">boat</a> directly into the Old Town.</p><p><strong>Cavtat</strong>: Nominated as one of the <a href="https://www.europeanbestdestinations.com/european-best-destinations-2021#cc-m-16028126224" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">best places to travel in Europe</a> by European Best Destinations, Cavtat is a great alternative to staying directly in Dubrovnik. The charming Old Town, seaside views, and variety of restaurants make it a great base that's less busy and it's still only about a 20-minute bus ride from Dubrovnik. I always encourage them to explore the Old Town, but to also save time for day trips throughout the region.</p><p>These are my top tips for activities and places that will make the most of your time in Dubrovnik.</p><div type="image" title="Dubrovnik travel guide Dario Garofalo for Insider" height="4480" width="5973" msid="91921836" hostid="261"></div> <strong>Explore lesser-known hidden gems in Dubrovnik's Old Town </strong><p>Most travelers come to Dubrovnik to experience the iconic Old Town, a UNESCO world heritage site known for its terracotta vistas overlooking the Adriatic Sea. However, the town itself can get quite crowded during summer. If you'd like to see the Old Town without the crowds during this time, then I recommend waking up early to explore the city around 6 or 7 a.m. It's one of my favorite times when the sun is rising and the entire town is peaceful. </p><p>Even when Stradun, the main street in the Old Town, is packed, you can find refuge in hidden nooks around town. One of my favorite hidden gems is a <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/uv?pb=!1s0x134c0b32ba9332e5%3A0x929452f0504d7df7!3m1!7e115!4shttps%3A%2F%2Flh5.googleusercontent.com%2Fp%2FAF1QipPoKT14temnAe4YaRM0bM9Ka-bFopzh2PVFuYGs%3Dw213-h160-k-no!5sbasketball%20court%20dubrovnik%20-%20Google%20Search!15sCgIgAQ&amp;imagekey=!1e10!2sAF1QipPoKT14temnAe4YaRM0bM9Ka-bFopzh2PVFuYGs&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;sqi=2&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjwgqn6hb73AhXEXc0KHRvMBvoQoip6BAhqEAM" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">basketball court</a>, tucked along the city walls under the Minčeta tower. On the opposite end of the city, I think you'll spot the best sunsets from the hole-in-the-wall <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tripadvisor.com%2FAttraction_Review-g295371-d552668-Reviews-Cafe_Buza-Dubrovnik_Dubrovnik_Neretva_County_Dalmatia.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">cliff-side Buza Bar</a>. In the middle of town, I also suggest a visit to the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tripadvisor.com%2FAttraction_Review-g295371-d12945542-Reviews-Beer_Factory_Dubrovnik-Dubrovnik_Dubrovnik_Neretva_County_Dalmatia.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Beer Factory Dubrovnik</a>, where you can sip on local brews and sit outside in the courtyard surrounded by orange trees.</p><div type="image" title="A view of Lovrijenac Fortress in Dubrovnik, Croatia as seen through an arch with blue sky in the background." height="3648" width="4864" msid="91921839" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Walk along the city walls and climb Fort Lovrijenac </strong></p><p>If there's one attraction you should pay for in Dubrovnik, it's the <a href="https://wallsofdubrovnik.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Dubrovnik city walls</a>. I always tell travelers that the views are absolutely worth the hype, as is the 200 Kuna ($30) entrance fee.  </p><p>Originally built as defense walls, this landmark takes you around the perimeter of Dubrovnik's Old Town and along the cliffs of the Adriatic Sea. Plan on spending around an hour and a half to four hours to walk the entire walls, but you might take a little longer if you stop for photos. My favorite views are near the Ploce Gate entrance that overlooks the harbor, and also on top of the Minčeta Tower.  When I take visiting friends and family here, I always try to go early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds. </p><p>Included in your ticket to the city walls is the entrance to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tripadvisor.com%2FAttraction_Review-g295371-d523463-Reviews-Fort_Lovrijenac-Dubrovnik_Dubrovnik_Neretva_County_Dalmatia.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow nofollow noopener sponsored sponsored">Fort Lovrijenac</a>, another line of defense in the days of Dubrovnik's Republic. I recommend this spot if you want to snap some quick shots of the Old Town jutting out into the sea from afar. I also like to catch a play or concert here each year during the <a href="https://www.dubrovnik-festival.hr/en/node/34" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Dubrovnik Summer Festival. </a></p><p>Although the fortress doesn't require nearly as much walking, be prepared to climb steep stairs to get up to the fortress. On the way down, stop for a drink at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tripadvisor.com%2FRestaurant_Review-g295371-d10684210-Reviews-Beach_Bar_Dodo-Dubrovnik_Dubrovnik_Neretva_County_Dalmatia.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Dodo Beach Bar</a> with its whimsical swings overlooking Sulić Beach.</p><div type="image" title="View of Dubrovnik city and cable car taken from Mount Srd" height="3632" width="4842" msid="91921840" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Check out the views from Mount Srd </strong></p><p>While I've been up to Mount Srd dozens of times, the birds-eye-view of Dubrovnik and the Adriatic Sea from here still blows me away. Atop Mount Srd you'll also find the popular <a href="https://www.nautikarestaurants.com/panorama-restaurant-bar/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Panorama restaurant</a>, which is usually crowded at lunchtime and sunset. However, I prefer to pack a <a href="https://www.piknikdubrovnik.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">gourmet picnic</a> to enjoy on top of Srd instead. </p><p>After taking in the panoramic views, visit the <a href="https://mdrd.hr/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Homeland War Museum</a> to learn about how civilians protected Dubrovnik on Srd during the war in the 1990s. </p><p>The most popular way to get to Srd is via <a href="https://www.dubrovnikcablecar.com/timetable-and-prices/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">cable car,</a> which runs from April through October, and costs 200 Kuna round trip. Alternatively, some people take a taxi up as well, but I wouldn't recommend it as there can be a lot of traffic along the narrow, steep road.</p><p>My preferred way to the top of Srd is by hiking, which takes about 45 minutes to one hour. Finding the <a href="https://goo.gl/maps/YaVda3SprxKPupPU7" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">starting point on the side of the highway</a> can be tricky, but the hike itself is relatively easy to intermediate. I find that the best time to hike is either early in the morning or around sunset when the sun isn't as strong. </p><div type="image" title="Dubrovnik travel guide Dario Garofalo for Insider" height="4476" width="5968" msid="91921843" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Explore the region by sea</strong></p><p>One of my favorite ways to immerse myself in Dubrovnik's dramatic, coastal landscape is to explore the region by sea. There are a couple of different ways I recommend doing this, depending on what activities you enjoy.</p><p>I always recommend kayaking, because it is the best way to explore the coastline at a slower pace. You'll see several hidden beaches and coves along the coast that are only accessible by sea, such as the Betina Cave and the Blue Cave on Lokrum. </p><p>There are several kayaking tours offered in Dubrovnik. I've used <a href="https://kayak-dubrovnik.com/?fbclid=IwAR2iPfrIns-AyvmsyZSM6TIBgEzwDGNOUkaP01oNWCV6_VrqyGP06E8a2do" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Kayak Dubrovnik</a>, which is one of the top-rated companies and each kayak tour comes with a professional guide that can explain more about the history and the landscape. You can also rent kayaks on your own for the day either with the same company, or by visiting kayak stands near the Pile Gate entrance to the Old Town. </p><p>Alternatively, jet skiing offers more of an adrenaline rush and will allow you to go beyond the coastline and take in the Adriatic Sea at a faster pace. Usually, the rental period for this is between 30 minutes to one hour, or you can take a jet-skiing tour with <a href="https://watersportsdubrovnik.com/?fbclid=IwAR2jJdNuo2q6pZYmdr8ZOVr7XFUxnS7ScjJJw5GvcJZyg7gfIbWct15EXkk" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Water Sports Dubrovnik.</a></p><div type="image" title="Dubrovnik travel guide Dario Garofalo for Insider" height="2666" width="3555" msid="91921847" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Visit the surrounding Dubrovnik regions </strong></p><p>Many travelers make the mistake of restricting themselves to the Old Town area and miss out on experiencing the entire region to its fullest. Plan to explore at least one to two other areas within Dubrovnik county during your trip.</p><p>If you have limited time, Cavtat is at the top of my list of places to go. It has postcard-perfect charm and a historic Old Town, walking trails, and spotless beaches with plenty of cafes and restaurants. I love to come here and walk around the lush peninsula along the seaside promenade and stop for a drink and swim at Little Star beach bar in the summer. You can easily get to Cavtat from Dubrovnik via bus 10 or by taking a boat from Dubrovnik's Old Town.</p><p>Just beyond Cavtat and the Dubrovnik airport is Konavle, which is where I send those who want to go off the beaten path. While here, visit the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tripadvisor.com%2FAttractions-g2266740-Activities-c36-t132-Konavle_Dubrovnik_Neretva_County_Dalmatia.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">local wineries</a>, eat at <a href="https://www.konobavinica.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">authentic family-run restaurants</a>, take a <a href="https://kojankoral.com/en/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">buggy safari, or go horseback riding</a>. Because much of Konavle is rural, it is best to explore this region by car or private tour.</p><p>Between Konavle and Dubrovnik, you'll find Župa, the region that I call home in Dubrovnik. I may be biased, but I think it's where you'll find Croatia's most pristine beaches in areas such as Kupari, Srbreno, and Mlini, where you can walk through and stop at various seaside cafes along the way. To get to Župa, you can take bus 10 from Dubrovnik, or a boat from Dubrovnik's Old Town port. </p><p>For a day trip that combines seafood, nature, and wine, I recommend Peljesac, about an hour outside of Dubrovnik. This peninsula is known for domestic wine and fresh oysters. There are various wineries throughout the peninsula offering native varieties like Plavac Mali (red) and Pošip (white). Try the fresh oysters pulled straight from the sea at the oyster farms in Mali Ston. </p><p>In the town of Ston, you can also find the <a href="https://www.ston.hr/?l=eng&amp;ispis=staticna&amp;id=58&amp;iskljuci=da" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Ston Fortress Walls</a>, which were part of the defense system during the Dubrovnik republic, and today are considered the longest fortress walls in Europe. There are several off the coast of Dubrovnik that are accessible by public ferry, tour groups, or private boat rental. </p><p>Located directly across from Dubrovnik's Old Town, <a href="http://www.lokrum.hr/eng/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Lokrum</a> is my favorite place to come in the summer for a beach picnic. This small island is a UNESCO-protected forestry reserve known for turquoise waters, peacocks, and botanic gardens. As it is only a 15-minute boat ride from Dubrovnik's Old Town Harbor, Lokrum is the easiest island to visit. On the south side of the island, you'll find the nude beach, a salt lake that connects to the sea by tunnel, and the Lokrum rocks for cliff jumping. </p><p>Though I adore Lokrum, when I have more time, I prefer to explore the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tripadvisor.com%2FAttraction_Review-g295371-d552666-Reviews-Elafiti_Islands-Dubrovnik_Dubrovnik_Neretva_County_Dalmatia.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Elafiti Islands</a>. While Dubrovnik's local government is trying to combat this problem by restricting the number of cruise ships per day, tourist crowds in peak summer season are still a problem. </p><p>I generally avoid the Old Town in July and August during the day for this reason. I also try not to drive into town during the summer, as there is usually a lack of parking and frequent traffic jams. </p><p>The best way to combat overtourism is to consider visiting outside of the peak season. May, June, September, or October are all great alternative months when the weather is still sunny and warm and the crowds are far fewer.  </p><p>If you're set on a prime July or August visit, I recommend staying outside of the city center in areas like Župa or Cavtat, where you'll not only save money on accommodations, but you'll also be able to escape the crowds for a more relaxed stay. </p><p><strong>Cash in Dubrovnik </strong></p><p>I always make sure to carry cash in Dubrovnik. While cards are widely accepted, some bars or shops are often cash only. Plus, if you are shopping for souvenirs, some places will offer a cash discount. For example, I bought nice jewelry in Dubrovnik and received a 15% discount for paying in cash. </p><p>Although Croatia is part of the European Union, they are still using Croatian Kuna until the end of 2022. The temperature can get up to 40 Celsius in the summer and the sun itself is extremely strong. I've seen tourists get sunstroke by spending too much time in the sun and not drinking enough water or wearing sufficient sunscreen. </p><p>Practice caution when outside in the summer, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun is the strongest. Wear sunscreen and a hat, drink lots of water, and try to find shade when you can. </p><p>If you plan on visiting Dubrovnik in the spring, fall, or winter, be prepared for rain. The weather can change from clear skies to downpours in a matter of hours. If I'm going out during this time, I always make sure to throw a rain jacket or umbrella in my car. In many cases, I've needed it.</p><p><strong>Packing tips for Dubrovnik</strong></p><p>Not only is Dubrovnik filled with cobble-stoned streets, but there are also a lot of stairs, so packing comfortable shoes is essential. Sneakers or sandals that are durable are ideal, but if you do want to pack heels for a night out, I would opt for a block-heel or wedge over thin stilettos. </p><p>Most beaches in Dubrovnik are rocky, which can make it tricky to get in and out of the water. That's why I always pack water shoes in my beach bag. You'll also avoid stepping on any sea urchins that you see along the rocks. </p><p>I also always make sure to wear a proper shirt and shorts or dress over my swimsuit. It's not socially acceptable to walk around town in your swimwear, especially in the Old Town. In my experience, unlike other destinations in Europe, petty theft and crime are very rare. However, there are precautions to take as a traveler.</p><p>To start, Dubrovnik's rocky terrain makes it ideal for cliff jumping. However, we locals know that you can't just do this anywhere. Some rocks are unstable, and sometimes you can't see rocks under the surface of the sea. Ask locals for safe places to jump.</p><p>When it comes to swimming, I'm never worried about dangerous fish, and there aren't sharks near the coast. The sea is also extremely clean, so I never worry about the quality of the water either. However, you should watch out for sea urchins on the rocks while getting in and out of the water. These "sea porcupines," as they are called in Croatian, can get stuck in your foot and are a literal pain to remove. </p><p><strong>Driving in Dubrovnik </strong></p><p>Having a car while in Dubrovnik is a great option if you plan to take day trips throughout Southern Dalmatia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, it's taken me years to get used to driving in Dubrovnik. Traffic signs can be confusing, the roads are narrow, and parking is often limited, causing traffic. </p><p>If you do rent a car, make sure you are okay with all the above. You can also access Dubrovnik by <a href="https://www.krilo.hr/en/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">ferry</a> via Split and other Croatian islands, or even <a href="https://www.jadrolinija.hr/en/about-us/ships/ferries/ferries-for-coastal-and-international-shipping/dubrovnik" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">from Bari, Italy</a>.  </p><p>But if you're traveling elsewhere in Croatia, you will likely arrive in Dubrovnik by <a href="https://www.buscroatia.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">bus</a> or car. If you look at a map, you'll see that Dubrovnik is separated from the rest of Croatia. That means if coming here by land, you'll have to cross into Bosnia and Herzegovina via the town of Neum. Alternatively, you can avoid this border crossing by taking the Pelješac bridge that opens in July 2022. </p><p>Here is everything else you need to know about arriving and getting around Dubrovnik.</p><div type="image" title="Dubrovnik Croatia airport plane runway Getty" height="2333" width="3111" msid="91921855" hostid="261"></div><h3><strong>Airport in Dubrovnik</strong></h3><p>The <a href="https://www.airport-dubrovnik.hr/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Dubrovnik airport</a> is about a 20-minute drive outside of town in the region of Konavle. Regular flights are well-connected to various hubs across Europe in the peak tourist season of April through October. Some airlines flying into Dubrovnik include <a href="https://www.turkishairlines.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Turkish Airlines</a>, <a href="https://www.vueling.com/en" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Vueling Airlines</a>, <a href="https://www.austrian.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Austrian Airlines</a>, <a href="https://www.easyjet.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">EasyJet</a>, <a href="https://www.lufthansa.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Lufthansa</a>, and <a href="https://www.croatiaairlines.com/hr" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Croatia Airlines</a>. If you are coming from the US, you can book a direct flight from <a href="https://www.united.com/en-us/flights-from-newark-to-dubrovnik" target="_blank" rel="nofollow nofollow noopener sponsored sponsored">New York/Newark to Dubrovnik with United Airlines</a>.</p><p>To get from the airport into the city center of Dubrovnik, you can take the <a href="https://platanus.hr/shuttle-bus/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Platanus shuttle bus</a>, an Uber, or a taxi. The cost of the shuttle bus is about $8, or 55 Croatian Kuna. I recommend booking a ticket in advance <a href="https://www.ticket.platanus.hr/?l=en" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">online</a>, although you can book upon your arrival at the counter. The bus leaves every half hour, and stops include the main bus station in Gruž, grawe station, the cable car bus stop near the Old Town, and Srebreno station. </p><p>However, the fastest option is Uber, which is widely used in Dubrovnik, with plenty of drivers waiting at the airport. I recommend Uber over a regular taxi, as it's usually cheaper in Dubrovnik. The price will vary depending on where you are going, however, you can expect it to cost at least 250 Kuna, or about $35. </p><p>I also recommend asking your accommodation about booking an airport transfer for you, if possible. Most hotels offer this, and if you are staying in an apartment or B&amp;B, they may be able to arrange one. </p><div type="image" title="Dubrovnik travel guide Dario Garofalo for Insider" height="1875" width="2500" msid="91921859" hostid="261"></div><h3><strong>Renting a car in Dubrovnik </strong></h3><p>If you have more than three days in Dubrovnik and would like to take a variety of day trips, it's best to rent a car. You may rent a car in Dubrovnik at the airport with well-known companies such as <a href="https://www.hertz.hr/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Hertz</a>, <a href="https://www.europcar.com/en-us" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Europcar</a>, <a href="https://www.sixt.hr/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Sixt</a>, and more, just be sure to book your rental car online in advance, because rental car shortages take place in the peak season at the airport. </p><p>If you're planning to take day trips, you're likely thinking about Montenegro, which is only an hour away from Dubrovnik. If you drive there in your rental car, you will need to purchase a green card from the rental car company to show at border control, which is the proper documentation and registration for taking it into another country on behalf of the rental car company. </p><p>If you look at a map, you'll see that the coastal town of Neum in Bosnia and Herzegovina actually separates Dubrovnik from the rest of Croatia. Therefore, if you plan to <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword> elsewhere in Croatia, you will have to go through the brief border crossing into Bosnia and Herzegovina. You do not need to purchase an additional green card for going through Bosnia and Herzegovina. You can also avoid this border crossing by taking <a href="https://www.croatiaweek.com/video-peljesac-bridge-and-access-roads-soon-ready-to-open-to-traffic/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">the Pelješac bridge</a>, which is scheduled to open in the summer of 2022. </p><div type="image" title="Dubrovnik travel guide Dario Garofalo for Insider" height="4480" width="5973" msid="91921860" hostid="261"></div><h3><strong>Getting around Dubrovnik </strong></h3><p>There are many ways to get around Dubrovnik. When I'm in the Old Town, I walk everywhere. Not only is parking limited, but the Old Town is also closed to traffic.</p><p>However, the downside of Dubrovnik's picturesque vistas is that there are a lot of hills — which means there are a lot of stairs. There have been plenty of times that I opted for walking from Old Town to Gruž in the summer heat, then climbed up several flights of stairs, only to arrive at my destination exhausted and drenched in sweat. </p><p>For this reason, I also recommend the public bus in Dubrovnik, which is called <a href="https://www.libertasdubrovnik.hr/lines-map/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Libertas Dubrovnik</a>. It connects Dubrovnik's Old Town with surrounding areas of Gruž, Lapad, Župa, Cavtat, and more. Otherwise, I often take Ubers around Dubrovnik when I am in a rush.</p><p>But if I want to take the scenic route, I prefer to get to and from Dubrovnik by boat. Boat companies like <a href="https://www.adriana-cavtat.com/boat-tours/regular-boat-service/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Adriana</a> and <a href="https://www.libertasdubrovnik.hr/lines-map/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Vivado</a> connect Dubrovnik's Old Town harbor to the Župa region and Cavtat. The boats leave every half hour, and the price starts at 50 Kuna, or $8 for a one-way ticket. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11910935" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="american-airlines" source="Orion">American Airlines</keyword> is returning 13 <keyword id="12020592" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="routes" source="Orion">routes</keyword> to its international network as it prepares for strong demand to Europe.</li><li>The carrier has also had to drop five markets due to delays in Boeing Dreamliner deliveries.</li></ul><p>American <keyword id="11898285" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airlines" source="Orion">Airlines</keyword> is expanding its international network with over a dozen returning routes in 2022.</p><p>Dallas-based American is resuming 13 international routes next year from its hubs in <keyword id="11910868" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="philadelphia" source="Orion">Philadelphia</keyword>, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Charlotte, Phoenix, and New York, the airline told Insider. The routes are mostly to Europe — though one will go to Asia — and have not flown since 2019 or ceased during the onset of the pandemic.</p><p>"We anticipate the summer of 2022 will be probably the highest demand summer to Europe we've seen as an industry," American's vice president of network planning Brian Znontins told Insider. "People who have been putting off their trip for a couple of years now are finally eager to go and get out to Rome or Paris wherever they want to go. So, not only do we have the normal level of demand for these markets, add two years of pent of demand from prior years and we expect planes to be pretty full this summer."</p><p>While the expansion gives more options to travelers, the airline also has been forced to cut routes for next summer due to delayed aircraft deliveries. </p><p>On Thursday, American revealed in a memo seen by Insider that up to 13 Dreamliner planes that were expected to be in its fleet by winter 2021 won't be delivered on time due to delays from Boeing. The aircraft manufacturer has had quality control issues forcing it to halt deliveries of the 787 in October 2020, according to <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/boeing-deals-with-new-dreamliner-defect-amid-production-problems-11634209201.">The Wall Street Journal</a>.</p><p>Because of the delays, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-airlines-cutting-routes-prague-edinburgh-hong-kong-2021-12">American will cut five international markets next summer</a>, including Edinburgh, Scotland; Shannon Ireland; Prague, Czech Republic; Dubrovnik, Croatia; and Hong Kong. </p><p>According to Znontins, the carrier's widebody capacity will be at 80% of its 2019 levels for summer 2022, which is as much as its fleet will allow it to fly.</p><p>"We're so disappointed in Boeing right now because they are not delivering the airplanes that they promised they would, and if they did, we would be flying even more to Europe than we are in our current schedule," Znontins told Insider.</p><p>Moreover, American will reduce frequencies to Beijing and Shanghai in China and Sydney, Australia. Znontins told Insider that the company is having problems with the Chinese government.</p><p>"They [the Chinese government] are only letting us fly two times a week to China right now, which is well below the bilateral negotiations between the US and Chinese permits," Znontins told Insider. "We do not see that changing anytime soon, so we've adjusted our schedules accordingly to give our passengers a bit more confidence in the flights they do book." </p><p>Overall, demand to Asia is also slow to recover and Znontins does not expect it to return for another year or two.</p><p>Despite the setbacks, American is launching two all-new routes to the Middle East, including to <keyword id="12021835" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="doha" source="Orion">Doha</keyword>, <keyword id="11899680" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="qatar" source="Orion">Qatar</keyword> from New York's John F. <p>On January 27, the world's largest cruise ship is set to glide out of the Port of Miami. For the several thousand passengers who have reserved a berth on its maiden voyage through the Caribbean, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-about-royal-caribbean-icon-of-the-seas-2024-1"><u>Icon of the Seas</u></a> might seem like the dream holiday. Weighing as much as five Titanics, the ship is a floating ziggurat of fun and indulgence.</p><p>The "first-of-its-kind combination of the best of every vacation," as Royal Caribbean describes it, boasts seven pools across the ship's 20 floors, an aquapark with six waterslides, a 55-foot water curtain, and a surfing simulator. There's a climbing wall, an ice-skating rink, a minigolf course, a karaoke bar, a casino, an escape room, an obstacle course, and "The Pearl," a multimedia sphere billed as "the world's largest kinetic sculpture." Passengers have 40 ways to dine across eight distinct "neighborhoods," and 28 ways to sleep, including the $80,000-a-week "Ultimate Family Townhouse," each with its own white picket fence, mailbox, and indoor slide. The opening of reservations for the Icon, in October 2022, saw Royal Caribbean's "single largest booking day in its 53-year history," the company said.</p><p>The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/small-cruises-surprising-advantages-over-mega-ships-2023-10"><u>megaship</u></a> embodies a rapid redemption for the cruise industry. In the early months of the pandemic, as the global cruising fleet moldered at port, some wondered whether the hiatus might prove terminal. Instead, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cruise-vacation-carnival-disney-royal-caribbean-booking-popular-ships-2023-12"><u>cruising has come roaring back</u></a>, setting passenger records and attracting a new cohort of younger travelers.</p><p>But the Icon is also debuting at a moment of reckoning. As it pulls away from the American mainland, it will be pursued by a storm of animosity from port communities, environmental activists, and bystanders who feel that, in a period of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/overtourism-measures-limit-tourism-going-to-increase-venice-amsterdam-rome-2023-10"><u>overtourism</u></a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cruise-ship-air-pollution-carnival-cars-europe-study-2023-6"><u>climate crisis</u></a>, it all seems a bit <em>much</em>.</p><p>When a rendering of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/9-reasons-royal-caribbean-icon-of-the-seas-shake-industry-2023-7"><u>Icon's flamboyant stern</u></a> went viral in July, for every person presenting it as the ultimate vacation, someone else was calling it a monstrosity, an avatar of grotesque overconsumption. Few could deny that the lurid leviathan was indelible. But what is it an icon of, exactly?</p><p>Love them or loathe them, giant cruise ships are among the most remarkable success stories of the mass tourism age. In the mid-20th century, as commercial airplanes supplanted boats as the main mode of long-distance transportation, passenger shipping lines fell into steep decline. Cruising was initially a small-scale and ponderous pastime: Ships would dock at ports of call for several days and cater to a clientele that had both time and money. Then Ted Arison, the scion of an Israeli shipping family, flipped the industry on its head by asking: What if the boat itself was the destination?</p><p>In January 1972, Arison bought an old passenger liner and commissioned a hasty refit to provide space for onboard entertainment. Rechristened the Mardi Gras, the first <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reasons-carnival-cruises-best-for-first-time-cruisers-2023-5"><u>Carnival cruise ship</u></a> sailed out of Miami that March. The modern cruising industry was born.</p><p>Today, cruising includes river cruises, luxury special-interest journeys, and monthslong expeditions to some of the most remote maritime environments in the world. But what most people think of are the massive ships that followed in the Mardi Gras' wake: a vacation on the water. A boat like the Icon will spend the vast majority of its seven-day itinerary at sea, docking at only two or three ports along the way.</p><p>In the decades after the Mardi Gras' inaugural journey, the annual cruise-passenger load grew exponentially — from 500,000 in 1970 to nearly 30 million in 2019. The Port of Miami, "Cruise Capital of the World," went from processing 61,000 passengers in 1950 to nearly 68,000 passengers in a single day in 2023.</p><p>This expansion has pushed through some formidable bow waves. In 2012, the Costa Concordia made worldwide headlines when it foundered off the coast of Tuscany, Italy, killing 32 people. Eight years later, cruise ships such as the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-diamond-princess-cruise-ship-coronavirus-quarantine-went-wrong-2020-2"><u>Diamond Princess</u></a> became early incubators for COVID-19. By summer 2020, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/carnival-corp-cruise-loses-billions-delta-variant-covid-19-2021-9"><u>Carnival was hemorrhaging $1 billion a month</u></a>. As the borders reopened, the speed of the industry's recovery has been startling. Passenger numbers surged past 2019 levels last year.</p><p>"This week, in January, would typically be very quiet," Aaron Saunders, a senior editor at the cruising-review site Cruise Critic, told me earlier this month. He was calling from the Golden Jubilee lounge of the Carnival Celebration, the largest vessel in Carnival's fleet (it has a roller coaster on deck). "But this ship is entirely sold out," he said. "We've never seen ships this consistently full."</p><p>More than anyone, repeat cruisers have fueled the bounce back. In a December 2022 survey by the <a target="_blank" href="https://cruising.org/-/media/clia-media/research/2023/2023-clia-state-of-the-cruise-industry-report_low-res.ashx"><u>Cruise Lines International Association</u></a>, 85% of passengers said that they would cruise again. The appeal was clear: In CLIA surveys, people said cruises were easier to arrange, more relaxing, and more "pampering" than other holidays. People also coveted the variety of destinations and activities.</p><p>"Twenty years ago, the entertainment was extremely limited compared to what you have now," Sue Bryant, a veteran cruise journalist and editor, told me. "When the first ship introduced a climbing wall, it was considered outrageously revolutionary. Now you've got zip lines, water slides, and musical shows from Broadway and the West End. The product is always improving."</p>          <p>But perhaps the most surprising feature of this surging popularity is how much of it is also being driven by younger travelers. Data recently compiled by researchers at CivicScience showed that 69% of 18- to 24-year-olds were at least "somewhat interested" in going on a cruise, the highest level of any age group. At the time of writing, videos of life aboard another Royal Caribbean ship, the Serenade of the Seas, six weeks into a nine-month <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-royal-caribbeans-9-month-ultimate-world-cruise-unusual-2024-1"><u>Ultimate World Cruise</u></a>, had become a viral sensation. Posts with the hashtag #ultimateworldcruise, most of them created by millennial and Gen Z influencers, had accrued over 350 million views on TikTok alone.</p><p>As the industry casts off outdated clichés of retirees, shuffleboard, and black-tie dining, some companies have gone all out for the young-adult market. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/virgin-voyages-sea-terrace-room-balcony-photo-cruise-cabin-tour-2023-8"><u>Virgin Voyages</u></a>, which debuted in 2021 with the promise to "sail our ships with sass," has a no-kids policy and boasts onboard amenities — such as brunch bars, Peloton classes, and resident drag performers — tailored to a young customer base.</p><p>"Some people think that cruises are all about partying. Others have an idea that cruises are formal, all about ballroom dancing," Emma Le Teace, a cruise writer and YouTuber, said. "Both these options do exist. But young customers are realizing that there are hundreds of options in between."</p><p>Crucially, in a period of high inflation, all these perceived upsides are available for controlled costs. The standard cruise package is all-inclusive. Though alcohol and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-ways-save-money-on-cruise-from-frequent-traveler-2023-8"><u>off-ship excursions tend to cost extra</u></a>, a person can, in theory, spend a week on board without spending another dollar.</p><p>All this is why, for millions of repeat customers, cruising is the best and only way to travel.</p><p>A week on a giant floating resort will never be for everyone. For the writer David Foster Wallace, in his famous 1991 essay for Harper's, there was "something about a mass-market Luxury Cruise that's unbearably sad." Three decades later, many of the characteristics that ensure cruising's popularity and profitability are the same ones that burden it with ethical ballast.</p><p>The modern cruise industry is dominated by the company Arison founded, Carnival, which owns almost half the entire global market, and Royal Caribbean, of which the Icon of the Seas is the latest flagship. Both companies are headquartered in Miami, but their vessels sail under what's known in maritime parlance as "flags of convenience." To bypass strict American regulations and high taxes, companies register their ships to a foreign country. Carnival, for instance, is flagged to Panama, Royal Caribbean to the Bahamas. Originally pioneered by passenger-ship companies seeking to sell booze during Prohibition, today this tactic has enabled cruise lines to sidestep stringent labor laws. Low-ranking employees on large cruise ships, often from low-income countries, have reported working long hours for below minimum wage, while enjoying few, if any, employment benefits. (One <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cruise-ship-job-long-hours-low-pay-no-days-off-2023-2"><u>former cruise worker</u></a> recently told Business Insider that he knew of colleagues working for as little as $2 an hour.)</p><p>But a perhaps greater contention is the industry's immense <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/carnivals-history-of-environmental-violations-cruise-industry-2020-3"><u>environmental impact</u></a>. In common with most large oceangoing vessels, cruise ships have traditionally been powered by heavy fuel oil, a viscous diesel that tends to be the cheapest — read: dirtiest — fuel available. When burned, it emits prodigious quantities of CO2, as well as toxic particulates that contaminate the air and water. A 2019 study by Transport &amp; Environment, a Brussels nongovernmental organization, found that Carnival's European fleet emitted 10 times as much sulfur oxide, a pollutant that has been proved to harm the human respiratory system, as all the continent's 260 million passenger vehicles combined. </p><div type="image" title="The Carnival Jubilee is transported by tugboat while a crowd watches from the grassy shore." height="3712" width="5568" msid="107147778" hostid="261"></div><p>Cruise lines insist that a greener future is viable. Carnival has committed to halve its carbon emissions by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050. Royal Caribbean promises a net-zero ship by 2035. But many climate experts say that the "transitional" mitigations are nowhere near adequate. Liquefied natural gas, which powers most new cruise ships, including the 90,000-horsepower engines on the Icon, emits about 25% less CO2 than conventional marine fuels, but it <a target="_blank" href="https://theicct.org/publication/the-climate-implications-of-using-lng-as-a-marine-fuel/"><u>generates methane</u></a>, a particularly potent greenhouse gas.</p><p>Friends of the Earth's latest Cruise Ship Report Card, which scores major lines on metrics including air-pollution reduction, water-quality compliance, and transparency, gave both Carnival and Royal Caribbean yet another F.</p><p>"Cruise-ship greenhouse-gas emissions grew more than 20% between 2012 and 2018," Bryan Comer, the director of the International Council on Clean Transportation's marine program, told me. The only way to bring that down, he said, is through "mandatory, enforceable regulations."</p><p>For anti-cruise activists, the wider climate crisis has become a rallying point. In October, when the World Traveller, a luxury cruise ship often assigned to the polar regions, arrived in the French port of Douarnenez, it was booed by a crowd of protesters, some dressed as walruses and polar bears. Anti-cruise sentiment has begun to carry over into restrictive legislation. Several <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/list-us-port-towns-want-to-limit-ban-cruise-ships-2023-4"><u>major cruise ports</u></a>, including Venice, Italy; Dubrovnik, Croatia; and Amsterdam, have introduced prohibitions and levied new taxes on passengers.  </p>          <p>But many campaigners remain unsatisfied. "The big cruise companies are playing three-dimensional chess, while the local governments play checkers," Karla Hart, the founder of the Global Cruise Activist Network, told me.</p><p>Hart, whose hometown of Juneau, Alaska, is a summer cruise hub, said the industry had an ignominious history of <a target="_blank" href="https://foe.org/cruise-history-violations/"><u>environmental violations</u></a> and of leveraging flags of convenience, clever marketing, and political clout to get its way. "They're very good at spinning the story to make themselves look better. But greenwashing and obfuscation are ingrained in the corporate culture," she added.</p><p>Despite their notoriety, boats such as the Icon are few in number. Cruise Market Watch forecasts there will be 360 cruise ships in service at the end of this year, comprising less than 1% of the global commercial fleet. But they're a conspicuous target. "It's easy to point a finger at the ship in the harbor and say there's our problem. It's a lot harder to get angry about the 37 flights a day that are arriving from all over the world," Saunders, the cruise critic, said.</p><p>While many port residents decry the ships' disruptive impact, others vaunt them as economically indispensable. In April, when ships returned to Skagway, Alaska, after a long COVID-19 hiatus, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/skagway-alaska-tourists-season-1.6818337"><u>reports</u></a> described store owners weeping with relief.</p><p>Meanwhile, ongoing calls for ships to be proscribed risk precipitating a vicious cycle in which cruise companies, ostracized at traditional ports, merely reroute to their coastal concessions. Both of the routes traveled by the Icon of the Seas include a stop off at Royal Caribbean's private island, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/perfect-day-cococay-private-bahamian-island-tour-photos-2022-5"><u>Perfect Day at CocoCay</u></a>, in the Bahamas.</p><p>A lot of the discourse boils down to cruise ships' arresting optics. The industry's tendency toward gigantism is partly about economies of scale — it's more cost-effective to squeeze as many passengers as possible onto one large ship than many small ships — but it's also an arms race designed to polarize and provoke. "That stern is such a departure from anything that has ever been created on a ship before," Saunders said, referring to the Icon's eye-catching rear end. "It was always going to stir the pot."</p><div type="image" title="Rendering of the Icon of the Seas" height="6000" width="6000" msid="107147985" hostid="261"></div><p>To detractors, the fact that each new incarnation of megaship seems to aspire to <em>more</em>, adding entrées to an already stuffed menu, can seem symbolic of an impatient, gluttonous, and superficial age — the perfect holiday for a society that demands constant diversion. "Cruise passengers learn to be suspicious of anything outside of their cruise bubble. They don't want to see anything that's ugly. They don't want to see anything that's real," Hart said. Her house often shakes from helicopter excursions carrying cruise passengers to Juneau's shrinking ice fields. "These trips are sold as 'once in a lifetime' opportunities," she added, "but it's basically a theme-park experience offered by companies that are trying to empty your wallet."</p><p>But the same resort-style product that repels some people proves irresistible to others, for whom a boat like the Icon is a kind of fantasy. While overseas travel has become freighted with anxiety post-pandemic, a cruise ship, by contrast, is the ultimate contained environment — convenient, predictable, and hassle-free. From the moment of boarding, a passenger is insulated from the variables and complexities of traveling in a foreign place. The food and drink are always flowing. Your luggage is never far away. The entertainment runs 24/7. Adrift on a parallel world of rest and recreation, the ships take you away from terrestrial concerns and, by extension, away from moral scruples.</p><p>If cruising is an industry that has long benefited from loopholes in maritime law, then today it also benefits from something else: a loophole in consumer conscience.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author/henry-wismayer"><em>Henry Wismayer</em></a><em> is a writer based in London. The truth behind America's cruise obsession: 'They don't want to see anything that's real'

<ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/american-airlines">American Airlines</a> announced major changes to its international strategy on Wednesday.</li><li>Among other changes, the airline will cancel 19 routes, scale down its international operation from its Los Angeles hub, and double down on alliances with other <keyword id="44023" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="airlines">airlines</keyword> based in Seattle and London.</li><li>The airline will also slow down the return of some routes, waiting until summer 2021 as demand remains low due to the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/coronavirus">coronavirus pandemic</a>.</li></ul><p><keyword id="88011" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="american-airlines">American Airlines</keyword> announced big updates to its long-haul international network on Wednesday, reflecting the rapidly changing business environment during the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> pandemic — and previewing the effects it will have for years to come.</p><p>"<keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword> has forced us to reevaluate our network," Vasu Raja, American's head of route and network planning, said in a press release. "American will have a significantly smaller international network in the year ahead, but we are using this opportunity to hit reset and create a network using the strength of our strategic hubs that we can build and grow upon and be profitable on in this new environment."</p><p>The changes, which last through 2021, come as international travel demand remains low and travel restrictions remain in place around much of the world.</p><p>Even as countries and travelers adjust to life during the pandemic, American does not expect international travel to fully return for at least a few years. The airline said its long-haul capacity in summer 2021 — normally a peak travel period — will be 25% lower than in 2019. The airline planned to gain a foothold in the Africa market by partnering with Morocco's Royal Air Maroc airline to codeshare on onward flights from Casablanca.</p><p>The route between Los Angeles and Shanghai, China — one of five Los Angeles routes to be cut — will only be cancelled if regulators approve the airline's plans to fly to Shanghai from Seattle instead.</p><p>"American has spent the past few years right-sizing its international network, discontinuing underperforming routes while adding leisure destinations like Dubrovnik and Prague," Brian Znotins, American's vice president of network planning, said in the release. "Now, as demand has significantly diminished due to COVID-19, we have to be nimble, creating the network that our customers desire."</p><h2>Pulling back from Los Angeles</h2><p>Although Los Angeles International Airport has served as American's trans-Pacific gateway for years, the airline is set to all but abandon it for that purpose.</p><p>All but four international destinations will be scrapped from Los Angeles. Sydney, Australia, and Tokyo's Haneda airport in Japan will remain as will a seasonal flight to Auckland, New Zealand. American will also fly from Los Angeles to London Heathrow.</p><p>The airline planes to continue using Los Angeles as a domestic hub, instead, Znotins told <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/news/american-airlines-long-haul-plans-lax-seattle-dfw/?utm_source=milesfeed.com&amp;utm_medium=link&amp;utm_campaign=MilesFeed.comFeed.com">The Points Guy</a> in an interview.</p><h2>A focus on partner hubs in Seattle and London</h2><p>In 2019, American was gearing up for big things. The airline had announced five major new international routes out of its smaller domestic hubs, taking advantage of demand for routes with no international connections, and expanding its reach throughout the US and globally.</p><p>But that was when times were good.</p><p>As demand stays low and the airline is left cutting costs while trying to reorient around demand, capacity, and expenses, American is preparing to retract and consolidate, taking advantage of partnerships.</p><p>Earlier this year, American announced a new partnership and alliance agreement with <keyword id="584506" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Alaska-Airlines">Alaska Airlines</keyword>, as well as plans to grow its international routes out of Seattle. The idea was that American and Alaska could codeshare on some flights, so that Alaska's strong domestic presence in Seattle could feed into American's international flights.</p><p>At the time, American also announced two new international destinations from Seattle: Bangalore, India, and London Heathrow. On Wednesday, it announced a third, pending government approval: Shanghai.</p><p>Additionally, the airline said it plans to focus on restoring its service to London from each of its hubs before focusing on other destinations in Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia and the Middle East. From there, passengers can connect onwards on partner British Airways. American expects to be flying its full schedule to London Heathrow by summer 2021.</p><p>"For American, every new partnership means future growth opportunities for our airline," Raja said in the press release. "We're going to rely on our hubs' greatest strengths with our existing international network, and further integrate into our partners' hubs to provide connectivity that's been untapped in the past."</p><h2>A postponed return for international destinations</h2><p>International flights form other American hubs will return between winter 2020 and summer 2021, the airline said.
