<ul><li>Huawei has partnered with Micromax to expand its offline retail network in India.</li><li>Meanwhile its sub-brand, Honor, is downsizing its operations in the country reportedly due to falling sales.</li><li>Honor sells more devices in India than Huawei but Huawei's partnership with Micromax does not include the sub-brand.</li></ul>Chinese tech major <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/Here-are-all-the-companies-that-have-cut-ties-with-Huawei-dealing-the-Chinese-tech-giant-a-crushing-blow/articleshow/69463750.cms">Huawei</a> is trying to sell more of its phones by partnering with Indian consumer electronics company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/micromax-to-launch-cheap-4g-volte-feature-phones/articleshow/57665718.cms">Micromax </a>and, at the same time, Huawei's sub-brand, Honor, seems to be thinning down its operations in India in the face of piling inventory.

 Huawei's market share in India has been <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/india-smartphone-share/">dipping</a> since last year and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/huawei-has-been-blacklisted-by-the-us-government-heres-what-happened-to-the-last-chinese-tech-company-that-got-the-death-penalty-/articleshow/69417128.cms">being blacklisted</a> from doing business with American companies like Google only seems to have made things worse. This time around, the sales have dipped further than before with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/huawei-has-reportedly-stopped-its-smartphone-production-after-us-blacklist-amid-trade-war/articleshow/69615885.cms">inventory piling up</a> according to a source at Honor who spoke to <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/jobs/chinese-handset-maker-honor-scales-down-india-operations-cuts-jobs/articleshow/70355339.cms">ET</a>, resulting in downsizing of the sub-brand's operations. And, Huawei is only looking to expand its own devices through Micromax's retail network. It's partnership with the local Indian smartphone manufacturer does not include Honor. Building one brand while shutting down the other Huawei sells its smartphones in India under two brand names, Huawei — providing mid-range and premium smartphones — and its sub-brand Honor, which makes entry-level and budget devices. And while, Huawei is the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/judge-us-on-merit-huawei-tells-india-ahead-of-pompeo-visit/articleshow/69930199.cms">parent brand</a> — Honor sells more in India in terms of volume. <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/info-tech/huawei-inks-distribution-pact-with-micromax/article28687017.ece">Hindu Business Line</a> reported that Huawei is still looking to expand its operations in India since its growth prospects in the US are now limited. Even in India, it's going to be an uphill battle for the brand. The last time Huawei breached the 3% threshold was back in 2018. According to <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/india-smartphone-share/">Counterpoint Research</a>, it's market share was close to dipping below 2% during the first quarter of 2019 while Xiaomi, Samsung, Vivo and Oppo sold considerably more devices. In fact, one of the primary reasons to leverage Micromax's retail network to boost offline sales could be that the local player is more dominant, with 5% market share. Huawei partners with Micromax as Honor's operations shrink in India

<ul><li><keyword id="6357456" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="huawei">Huawei</keyword> just launched its own operating system for smartphones — <keyword id="7965961" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="harmony-os">Harmony OS</keyword>.</li><li>It's the Chinese smartphone manufacturers response to Google's Android, which Huawei can no longer employ on new smartphones.</li><li>This could be a game changer for the smartphone industry where Huawei is the second largest player in the market globally, after Samsung. </li></ul>Huawei just launched its operating system, Harmony OS, during its developers conference in China.

 The new operating system won't only be a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/huawei-is-furiously-working-to-get-its-new-operating-system-off-the-ground-trademarking-it-across-the-world-and-shipping-1-million-test-devices/articleshow/69775344.cms">substitute</a> for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/google-ends-ties-with-huawei-no-more-youtube-gmail-maps-play-store/articleshow/69408135.cms">Google</a>'s Android operating system but it is also rumoured to replace <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/microsoft-is-selling-its-remaining-stock-of-huawei-laptops-and-confirmed-that-it-will-continue-delivering-software-updates-if-you-buy-one/articleshow/69845918.cms">Microsoft</a> Windows on Huawei manufactured laptops and tablets in the future. Richard Yu, Huawei's CEO, stated that the new system is 'ready to go' for smartphones. But, as of now, the Chinese tech giant as no plans to switch over to the operating system for all of its devices due to 'considersation of partnerships and the ecosystem'. Stepping into the arena Huawei is the second largest smartphone manufacturer in the world, after <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/best-samsung-phones-under-10000-in-india/articleshow/69752354.cms">Samsung</a>. Launching a new operating system could influence other Chinese smartphone manufacturers to switch over from Android as well ⁠— especially since Harmony OS is based on open source principles. This means that its based on the same functionality as the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) where developers and companies will have access to the code so that they an modify it for their own devices. Ironically, while Google may have shunned Huawei, Harmony OS will still be able to run Android apps. Including such a feature could be to ensure that users don't face any issues when switching over from Android to Harmony or it it's a just that Huawei is learning from Microsoft's smartphone experience. Why does Huawei need Harmony? The issue began when the US blacklisted Huawei from conducting business with American companies. Amid the US China trade war, tech companies like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/google-ends-ties-with-huawei-no-more-youtube-gmail-maps-play-store/articleshow/69408135.cms">Google</a>, Microsoft, Qualcomm, Broadcom and ARM temporarily suspended their business contracts with Huawei in order to comply with the new restriction. While the future of the company with respect to the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/this-is-the-latest-sign-that-trump-could-be-easing-up-on-the-united-states-trade-ban-with-huawei/articleshow/70231317.cms">US is still uncertain</a>, Harmony OS is a way for the company to hedge its position in case things take a turn for the worse. It won't be launching Harmony OS on smartphones but Yu disclosed that the operating system slowly start to make an appearance on Smart TVs, wearables and laptops by 2020. Huawei just launched its answer to Android — Harmony OS

Guess who’s fuelling Modi’s ‘Make in India’ dream? Well, it’s none other than Mukesh Ambani. His venture Reliance Jio Infocomm has asked the handset makers to make 4G phones in India. If the manufacturers make phones in India, Reliance has agreed to buy all handsets and sell via them. 
 
Reliance Jio, which will be providing broadband Internet in India through LTE, will enable 4G connectivity. 
 
The telecom company is already planning to take this to the next level and is in talks with Micromax, Lava, Karbonn, Intex, and Lenovo. While some of the handset manufacturers are already setting up production base in the country, experts believe, this move will also help the manufacturers keep the phone prices reasonable as these will be manufactured locally. 
 
Micromax, Lava, Karbonn, and Intex are planning manufacturing units in India, with production set to commence in the next six months to a year. 
 
Jio has signed deals with Chinese handset makers Huawei, ZTE, Alcatel OneTouch (TCL Communications), CK-Telecom and Beijing Tianyu Communication Equipment-owned K-Touch for procurement of smartphones for the company's consumer electronics brand, ReConnect, which will sell 4G handsets across India. 
 
Devices under the ReConnect brand will be priced between 4,000 and 25,000, they said. Jio has said it would ensure availability of under Rs 5,000 4G smartphones coinciding with its services launch. 
 
The company had promised that if there was any gap between demand and supply of smartphones at a particular price level, it could bridge the gap with its own brand under Reliance Retail. 
 
Under the partnership with Jio, companies like Huawei, ZTE, and Alcatel OneTouch will also provide dongles, routers and other broadband products aimed at homes and small office or home office customers. 
 
Reliance Jio is expected to be launched in December this year.
