In 2016, it was announced that the teens' swimsuits would be swapped for athletic-wear instead.</p><p>"This decision reflects an important cultural shift we're all celebrating that empowers women who lead active, purposeful lives and encourage those in their communities to do the same," Paula Shugart, who was president of the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/miss-universe-parent-company-filed-petition-thai-bankruptcy-court-2023-11">Miss Universe Organization</a> at the time, told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/entertainthis/2016/06/29/miss-teen-usa-to-eliminate-swimsuit-competition/86502942/?hootPostID=374ba4aff23a763f44679cce0a52fe62">USA Today</a> after the announcement.</p><p>"Our hope is that this decision will help all of Miss Teen USA's fans recognize these young women for the strong, inspiring individuals they are," she continued.</p><p>The Miss Universe Organization operated Miss USA and Miss Teen USA until 2020, when both pageants were franchised out to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/miss-usa-crystle-stewart-no-longer-president-2023-8">Crystle Stewart</a>, who won Miss USA in 2008.</p><p>Stewart was suspended in October 2022 following <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/miss-usa-pageant-controversy-explained-2022-10">allegations the Miss USA pageant had been rigged</a> that year. She was cleared in a third-party investigation, but Stewart and the Miss Universe Organization still decided to part ways in August 2023. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/miss-usa-changes-after-rigging-controversy-2023-9">Laylah Rose</a> is now the current president and CEO of both Miss USA and Miss Teen USA.</p><p>Since 2018, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/miss-usa-new-queen-miss-hawaii-savannah-gankiewicz-2024-5">Miss USA</a> and Miss Teen USA pageants have been held in the same location and within the same week.</p><h2 id="3157bdca-088c-466e-ba0c-889cc75ac173">Who is eligible to compete at Miss Teen USA?</h2><p>Women aged 14 to 19 can compete in the Miss Teen USA competition, while <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/former-miss-usa-contestants-age-limit-change-2024-1">all women aged 18 and over</a> are eligible for Miss USA and Miss Universe.</p><p>The Miss Teen USA pageant does not accept contestants who are married, have ever been married, or have had a marriage annulled. She went on to play Diane Westin in the soap opera "The Young and the Restless."</p><p>In 1983, 1984, and 1986, the winner of Miss Teen USA was automatically entered into the following year's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/miss-usa-pageant-controversial-moments-2023-9">Miss USA competition</a>. Now, a Miss Teen USA winner must win a Miss USA state title before she can compete on the national Miss USA stage.</p><p>Miss Teen USA 1989 Brandi Sherwood is the only former winner to also hold the title of Miss USA. Sherwood was first runner-up at Miss USA 1997, and assumed the title when Brook Lee <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/americans-who-have-won-miss-universe-pageant-2023-11">won the Miss Universe crown</a>.</p><p>Famous past winners of Miss Teen USA include "Love is Blind" host Vanessa Lachey and actor Kelly Hu.</p><h2 id="dc95760a-82f8-4fff-b629-0db23966936e">Why is Miss Teen USA so controversial?</h2><p>The Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants have had a tumultuous few months. Voigt resigned her title as Miss USA on May 6 and Srivastava followed two days later, saying her "personal values" no longer aligned with the organization.</p><p>In a statement she shared on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C6tmoN7L2hN/?hl=en">Instagram</a>, Srivastava said she had been "grappling with this decision for months" and planned to continue her "relentless advocacy for education and acceptance."</p><p>Srivastava and Voigt have publicly shared few details about their experiences, citing nondisclosure agreements they had to sign to compete at their respective pageants. But their mothers, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/miss-usa-miss-teen-usa-mothers-speak-out-resignations-2024-5">Barbara Srivastava and Jackeline Voigt</a>, spoke to BI and said their daughters had suffered "eight months of torture and abuse" under Rose's leadership. Rose did not respond to a request for comment on the mothers' statements. </p><p>Barbara said that Rose would repeatedly refer to Srivastava as "little girl" in her texts or email exchanges with the 17-year-old.</p><p>"This woman would get into lengthy, adversary conversations with a teenager," Barbara said. "It was very abusive, very diminishing, very gaslighting."</p><div type="image" title="Noelia Voigt and Uma Srivastava" height="1000" width="1444" msid="112204456" hostid="261" sizebytes="87748"></div><p>Just two months into Srivastava's reign as Miss Teen USA, Barbara said she cut off all direct communication between her daughter and Rose and began acting as their go-between.</p><p>Skinner, Srivastava's first runner-up, told BI that she had always dreamed of being Miss Teen USA but that her decision not to assume the title "meant more than a crown and sash."</p><p>"I'm a survivor of domestic violence. So this meant to be a voice for other people. That's what this meant for me," she said. Unless it is variegated (meaning it has multi-hued leaves), like the Domino or Picasso, all peace lilies share a similar look - lush, full leaves with a dark emerald hue and white, flowering leaves called spathes. These resemble the white flag of peace for which this plant is known for.</p><p><strong>Important: </strong>Peace lilies are considered toxic to pets by the <a href="https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants/peace-lily" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ASPCA</a> because they contain calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation, burning, and/or numbness. Replicating the slightly moist environment can allow your peace lily to thrive and bloom. However, it can tolerate slightly longer droughts than other houseplants under the right conditions.</p><p>"You can water your peace lily every one to two weeks, even allowing soil to dry out between waterings," says Marino. "Expect to water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light." </p><p>Misting your peace lily once a week in addition to its regular watering routine can also give it the moisture it needs, especially when in brighter light.</p><h2><strong>Temperature and light</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="A potted peace lily plant on a windowsill" height="1409" width="1879" msid="86798119" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Peace lilies are popular among plant novices for their ability to tolerate different light conditions indoors. While Marino says that peace lilies prefer temperatures between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, they can also thrive in medium to bright indirect light indoors as well as tolerate low indirect light.</p><p>"Most houseplants are just like us - they love it 75 degrees Fahrenheit and sunny," says Marino. "Keep them away from cold and hot drafts, like AC units, heaters, or open windows and doors."</p><h2><strong>Potting and fertilizer</strong></h2><p>Peace lilies prefer a soil that can mix drainage and moisture retention. Blended potting mixes with texture are common for peace lilies, especially ones with perlite, peat moss, coir, or loam.</p><p>"Potting soil like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thesill.com%2Fproducts%2Fpotting-mix-plants" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">an organic mix</a> with compost, pine bark, coir, worm castings, and perlite can work with your peace lily," says Marino.  </p><p>Most common peace lily varieties are quite large, thus needing a slightly larger pot to contain it. The most accurate way to know if your peace lily is rootbound and needs repotting is to see if roots are either coming out of the drainage hole, or rising from the surface of the soil. Peace lilies are usually repotted once a year, and repotting is also a great time to <a href="https://www.insider.com/peace-lily-care#propagation">propagate</a> your lush plant.</p><p>As for fertilizer, many peace lily owners forgo fertilizer because of the plant's hardiness and high tolerance for a variety of light and watering conditions. However, a water-soluble houseplant fertilizer diluted to half-strength can give your peace lily the little push it needs during the spring and summer. </p><h2><strong>Common problems</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="A wilting, under-watered peace lily plant" height="1410" width="1881" msid="86798120" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Like most popular houseplants, peace lilies are susceptible to common plant pests - in particular spider mites and mealybugs - as well as problems like overwatering and underwatering. </p><p>"A wilting plant or curling leaves with dry potting mix are usually signs of under-watering," says Marino. "While yellowing leaves and mushy black stems can be signs of over-watering."</p><p>To get rid of pests, Marino recommends treating your plant weekly or bi-weekly, every three days, until there is no reinfestation. </p><p>"For mealybugs, you'll want to spot-treat visible bugs with a cotton swab or cotton pad dipped in alcohol, then spray all of the foliage down with a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thesill.com%2Fproducts%2Forganic-neem-oil" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">neem oil</a> solution or insecticidal soap," says Marino. "For spider mites, use <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Sarasota-Green-Group-Growers-Control/dp/B07ZJRMTLX/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">an insecticide</a> that lists 'spider mites' on the label to spray down the plant." </p><p>To keep your plant healthy, Marino suggests constantly examining your plant when watering them, checking stems and under the leaves for any early signs of pests. Once spotted, quarantine your infected plant away from others to avoid pests spreading. </p><p><strong>Quick tip: </strong>To keep your peace lily's glossy leaves clean and shiny, use cloth gloves or a damp microfiber cloth to wipe any dust off from the top and bottom of the leaves. After wiping it, mist it lightly. </p><h2><strong>How to get peace lilies to bloom</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="A large peace lily plant in a planted indoors" height="1450" width="1936" msid="86798122" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>While the plant as a whole is not a flower, peace lilies can bloom small flowers twice a year in the spring and fall under the right conditions. These blooms appear on the spiky stem of the spathe.</p><p>To get your peace lily to bloom, place it in a spot that will receive at least six hours of bright, indirect light. Water it thoroughly once a week and lightly mist the leaves to keep a consistent level of moisture. </p><p>Don't worry if your peace lily hasn't bloomed within the first year you purchased it. Getting the optimum conditions for blooming indoors can be tricky so be patient and maintain consistency. </p><h2><strong>Propagation</strong></h2><p>Unlike many houseplants, peace lilies cannot be propagated through leaf or stem cuttings. The peace lily's propagation process is quite similar to a <a href="https://www.insider.com/types-of-succulents" target="_blank" rel="noopener">succulent</a> or <a href="https://www.insider.com/aloe-plant-care">aloe vera's</a>, using the process of division. </p><p>"You'll want to divide sections of the mother plant up to make more plants," says Marino. "This is best done with a mature plant, as the different sections you can divide will be more obvious." </p><p>Marino recommends gently shaking off some of the older potting mix and loosen up the roots. In this step, you can also remove any soggy roots or prune extra-long roots to promote growth.</p><p>"You should start seeing different sections, or crowns, of the plant that can be gently divided from one another," says Marino. "You can separate them gently with your hands, or use a sharp clean knife or pruners. Make sure each sectioned-off baby plant has healthy foliage and a root system. "If you cook the tomato you break down the bonds between the proteins and the pigments - the lycopene - and you absorb about <strong>four times more lycopene</strong> into your blood from cooked tomatoes than from fresh tomatoes."</p><p>But wait, there's more: Carotenoids fall under a class of vitamins called <a href="http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/glossary=fatsolublevitamin">fat soluble vitamins</a>, as opposed to water soluble vitamins like Vitamin C and some types of Vitamin B. This means that carotenoids will dissolve in fats, for example the fat in frying oil, just like the Vitamin B-6 in broccoli dissolves in water when you boil it.</p><p>"Since lycopene is soluble in oil, if you cook your tomatoe in olive oil, you'll <strong>absorb two times more again above and beyond</strong> from what you absorb from cooking tomatoes with the oil," Crosby said.</p><p>Now, if you're watching your waist line, it's important to limit the amount of fat you ingest daily.
