Thus far this year, domestic gold prices have grown by 23%, outperforming benchmark indices like Nifty and Sensex by a mile, which have gone up by 9.85% and 8.86%, respectively. The growth in gold loan disbursal rates month on month this year could also put Nifty and Sensex’s growth to shame. In just September 2024, gold loans grew an astounding 51%, up from 40.9% in August, 30.5% in June, and just 14.8% in March. <h2>Hey, wait up for me, says <keyword id="23953567" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="las" source="keywords">LAS</keyword></h2>In lockstep with the elder, gold loan sibling, advances against shares and bonds have also been inching up since 2022. Data from RBI (Reserve Bank of India) notes that as of September 2022, the outstanding quantum of loans that were taken against shares (LAS) and bonds stood at Rs 7,397.94 crores. This inched up to Rs 7,764 crore in September 2023. Come 2024, and it looked like this was LAS’ time to shine. Loans swiftly skyrocketed, with outstanding loans in this category going up from Rs 8,492 crore in March 2022 to a staggering Rs 9,546 crore at the end of September 2024. Naturally, the smoke of LAS has its fire in the record inflows that Indians are pouring into the stock market and mutual funds month on month. Per AMFI (<keyword id="20090034" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="association-of-mutual-funds" source="keywords">Association of Mutual Funds</keyword> in India), the net AUM (assets under management) of India’s mutual fund industry grew to Rs 67,25,614.61 crores in October 2024, up from Rs 67,09,259.24 crores in September 2024. Even the number of retail mutual fund folios, which include equity, hybrid, and solution-oriented mutual funds, burgeoned to 17,23,52,296 in October, as compared to 16,81,61,366 in September. The same goes for stock investments in India, where the number of new demat accounts that are added every month just simply refuses to climb down. As of last month, total demat accounts in the country stood at 17.9 crore, which is more than the entire population of full-fledged nations like Japan (12.45 crore), Russia (14.38 crore), and Bangladesh (17.3 crore). In fact, since February this year, the monthly growth of LAS has been hitting double digits. From 11.3% in March to 21.6% in May to 26.8% in August, growth in LAS has been exceptional, hitting 22.9% in September this year. For context, monthly growth in the LAS segment was at a mere 5% in September 2023. <h2>What's driving the growth?</h2>It's a win-win for both the bank and the customer. Customers love them because LAS is available at a lower interest rate compared to unsecured personal loans. You can get a loan at an interest rate of anywhere between 9 and 12% by pledging your gold, MF units, or shares. Compare this to over 10-28% rates, which is the range where unsecured personal loans charge interest. Banks love <keyword id="827883" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="secured-loans" source="Orion">secured loans</keyword> since they are well-secured. In case you default on paying back, the bank can sell off your gold, shares, or mutual fund units to recover the amount. This takes a lot of stress off the banks, which are already dealing with secured loans’ riskier sibling-unsecured lending. High NPAs (non-performing assets) and non-payments in the unsecured borrowing space have already put RBI on red alert, which is why the apex bank is tightening the screws on unsecured lending, which was well on its way to becoming a ticking time bomb. As a result, credit growth has moderated to 12.8% YoY in October, as against the 19.3% rise recorded in the year-ago period. Yet it's not like the banks won't feel the heat. Analysts at Nomura note that personal loan delinquencies in India that have been overdue by over 90 days rose to 5.1% in the last financial year, as opposed to just 3.9% in the year prior. <h2>How does it work?</h2>Both these loans work on a similar principle: Your loan amount is equal to a certain percentage of the actual market value of your asset. This is known as the <keyword id="20051485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ltv" source="keywords">LTV</keyword> (loan-to-value ratio). In the case of gold and debt mutual funds, RBI mandates that this LTV be about 75-80%. So, for every Rs 100 of gold or debt mutual fund unit you pledge, your maximum loan amount cannot exceed Rs 80. If you pledge gold, which has a market value of Rs 10 lakh, you can take a loan of up to Rs 8,00,000. In the case of shares and mutual fund units, this limit is set at 50%. So, your shares worth Rs 5,00,000 can only get you a loan worth Rs 2,50,000. But the bright side? You can continue earning returns on your investments and pay interest only on the amount you use, since this loan works as an overdraft facility. <h2>Super safe, you say?</h2>Interest rates on both of these loans are very much dependent on the market value of the asset, which wildly fluctuates on a day-to-day basis. So, in case the value of your asset falls, you’ll have to keep a margin or more of the same asset in order to continue with the loan and maintain the LTV balance. Failure to do so could mean the bank can even sell off your asset. Says financial planner Nema Chaya Buch. “Yes, LAS offers easy availability of funds since these loans come with a lower interest rate as compared to personal loans. Also, you continue to earn average returns of 10–13% on your equity investments. But the downside is, in case of emergency, those pledged securities cannot be sold. Also, if the equity market goes down, then the bank may ask for additional collateral. Raghvendra Nath, MD, Ladderup Wealth Management notes that taking a LAS is best when the value of your securities has appreciated significantly. “This allows you to maximize the loan amount based on your collateral while also addressing financial needs without having to liquidate your investment portfolio. However, there are notable disadvantages to consider. The market risk is significant; a substantial decline in market value could lead to margin calls, which may incur fees and charges if there are delays or prepayments, ultimately increasing the effective cost of borrowing. Furthermore, failure to make timely payments could result in the loss of your assets.”. Umesh Mohanan, ED &amp; CEO, of Indel Money, cautions that one should have a sufficient quantity of gold to get the loan amount one wants. "According to the current RBI rules, the loan applicant/borrower can draw up to 75% of the total market value of the collateral/gold jewellery. So, always carry a sufficient quantity of gold based on one’s loan requirement. “The most important thing is that the valuation of the gold depends on the purity of the gold. If the borrower pledges gold with higher purity, such as 24 carats or 22 carats, he will get the maximum loan amount," he adds.

The company's goal is to automate 80% to 90% of the work that goes into setting up an influencer campaign, its cofounder Kazzy Khazaal told Business Insider. The task of bargaining with creators and vetting their content for brand safety still requires a human touch, he added."My suggestion to the brands is that as soon as you're starting to negotiate and the influencer gives you a price and says, 'Hey, this is the price that I want,' you're able to step in," he said.In August, Dreamwell raised a $2.3 million pre-seed round led by Tim Draper's VC firm, Draper Associates. Other participating investors in the round included Panache Ventures and BDC Capital Seed Venture Fund.How does the Dreamwell platform actually work? First, a brand looking to run an influencer campaign on the platform enters criteria for the type of audience it wants to reach, such as targeting a particular age group or gender, as well as how much it's willing to pay each creator. Dreamwell then identifies up to 1,000 prospective influencers on apps like Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and LinkedIn. The company doesn't have direct relationships with most of those talent, but instead tracks down contact information to email prospective creators so a brand can begin a negotiation. A company can automate the entire discovery and outreach process, or manually select different creators that match its audience criteria for a campaign."First and foremost, we try to understand what's the value of this creator," Khazaal said. The firm said he was just an analyst — and an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/david-einhorns-files-lawsuit-against-james-fishback-2024-6">unproductive one at that</a>. This lack of uniformity and the relentless war for talent has firms and employees alike taking advantage of the ambiguity.Fishback, for example, references not an offer letter or an internal HR system to prove his title in his legal filings but an email sent to a third party by Greenlight's chief operating officer offhandedly referring to Fishback as the firm's "head of macro."Recruiters and hiring managers at big-name funds say candidates constantly give themselves more prestigious-sounding titles on LinkedIn. A dozen headhunters, fund executives, consultants, and others who spoke with Business Insider argued that as firms build out the non-investment sides of their businesses to support their growth, titles will only get more inflated."It's extremely tough to know who's real and who isn't," said one longtime recruiter who mostly focuses on quant firms and large multistrategy managers."An MD title at the banks, that means something. An MD title at a hedge fund doesn't mean anything."<h2 id="731f7cfe-0e1f-42aa-921c-ef631afc0183">Global heads, chairmen, investment officers, and more</h2>As one person who works in a hiring position at a large multistrategy firm told BI, "titles are free" — and firms use them. Industry insiders said a title could be a carrot for recruiting or retention, especially as the biggest funds become more institutional and add more non-investment roles to their firms.More than 200 people who work at the $64 billion firm Citadel have a title on LinkedIn that deems them the "head" of some part of the business, for example. That's roughly one out of every 14 people within the hedge fund — and doesn't include its founder, Ken Griffin; its chief operating officer, Gerald Beeson; and others on the leadership team.A person close to the Miami-based firm said Citadel's flat structure means that no matter an individual's title, the internal expectations to produce are very high.This person added that Citadel's pursuit of top external talent — the firm just hired Apple's top recruiter, Sjoerd Gehring, to be its chief people officer, and it poached Google's Paul Darrah this year to be its chief workplace officer — means some accomplished employees receive big titles to match their experience.Jose Gamez, for example, spent nearly 20 years working as a chef at several Four Seasons hotels, including five years leading the kitchen at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/07/us/coronavirus-citadel-securities-four-seasons-florida.html">the one in Palm Beach that Citadel Securities took over</a> during the pandemic. He's now the global head of culinary and executive chef for Citadel and Citadel Securities.Even for investing talent, titles can be tricky to understand from the outside, in many cases, because of the differing internal structures across the industry that obscure who actually makes trading decisions.Rokos has two dozen employees with the title "investment officer" in their LinkedIn profiles. A person familiar with the London-based firm said that while these employees sit somewhere between an analyst and a portfolio manager, the fact that its billionaire founder, Chris Rokos, makes all investment calls for the fund complicates titles. The manager declined to comment.At the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-bobby-jain-has-hired-jain-capital-hedge-fund-launch-2023-12">newly launched Jain Global</a>, there is a chairman of fundamental equities, Paul Enright, and a chief investment officer of fundamental equities, Townie Wells. Wells, a person familiar with the matter said, manages a portfolio on top of running the business, while Enright is more focused on mentorship and talent development.The chairman title is uncommon in hedge funds, especially for an individual business within a multistrategy manager, but the person close to Jain said it was what made the most sense for Enright, a former Viking Global portfolio manager who had been running his own money for years and decided to come back to the industry to work at the new fund.Firms can also tweak common industry titles internally.Millennium, for example, has ditched the sub-PM title, elevating those who once held that role to PM. These individuals, though, report to a senior PM, who can oversee several PMs within a pod.A person close to the firm said that as Millennium has grown, individual investing teams have become broader, necessitating more structure. All the teams at Millennium — there are more than 300 — are led by a senior PM, and it's not uncommon for PMs working under a senior PM to own part of the book and take risk themselves.In some cases, however, a PM's responsibilities can be more akin to those of a senior analyst or a sub-PM — but a PM title sounds better to external candidates."People will join because they want to be a PM," one recruiter said. "They know the power in that title."<h2 id="80e6436b-e9f6-4264-9dc3-db69994eef27">Keeping it under wraps</h2>Plenty of funds intentionally keep roles vague and closely monitor what their team members are publicly sharing about themselves.At Coatue, executives sign off on what employees put as their title on LinkedIn, people familiar with the firm's operations said. Members of Tiger Global's front-office team use "investor" as their title on LinkedIn instead of a more specific role.Quants like Marshall Wace, D.E. Shaw, and Two Sigma are famously guarded about their internal workings. At each firm, dozens of employees use catchall titles like "quantitative researcher" that can span experience levels.Both sides can be frustrating, especially for headhunters and business development pros at large firms trying to grow their teams.Oversharing or exaggerating titles can lead to inflated salaries and outside offers that aren't commensurate with a prospect's actual experience. Vague titles, on the other hand, can leave allocators struggling to understand what exactly their fees are paying for. It's something that impacts their reputation in the industry," Steinbrugge said."Over time, people will have titles that sound more important."

Some also participate in planned giving by donating assets to a philanthropic cause.In an interview with Business Insider, Vimala Snow, head of wealth strategy at Cresset Capital, shared four popular yet complicated assets to pass down to the next generation. Here are her best tips to make the wealth transfer process as smooth as possible.<h2 id="39ca2c74-f01b-4339-bfcd-ae426607605a">Houses</h2>Snow's clients often plan to divide their assets equally among children, which sounds simple in theory.In practice, this can be quite difficult, especially when it comes to a large asset like a home, which is many times the most valuable asset in an estate. Beneficiaries may disagree over what to do with a house — tensions can arise if one beneficiary wants to sell but another wants to keep the asset.Make sure to discuss any areas of disagreement ahead of time. Especially in the case of a family vacation home, make sure beneficiaries are aware of the costs of maintenance, taxes, and other expenses.A way to get around this is to split the overall estate balance equally instead of divvying up individual assets, Snow recommended."There can be a decision made in the future with respect to who's actually going to get what. "Obviously, owning a third of a home is not the easiest thing to do," Snow said.<h2 id="a421e507-6f98-4698-a287-c4d73e98fa53">Retirement accounts</h2>You can pass down retirement accounts, but beware of tax implications.Your beneficiaries won't be able to make additional contributions to an inherited IRA, and they're on the hook for any taxes on distributions. They'll also have to empty the inherited IRA account within 10 years.There are a few ways to reduce the tax impact. First, the tax rules are less strict for spouse beneficiaries — they can roll over the inherited IRA into their personal account and are exempt from the 10-year rule, meaning that they can spread out tax payments over a longer period of time. Passing down a Roth IRA also has no tax implications.Consider donating your retirement account to charity for additional tax benefits, Snow suggested. If you donate an IRA to charity upon death, neither you nor your beneficiaries will pay income taxes on distributions of the assets, and the charitable tax deduction can be used to offset estate taxes. You can also choose to split your IRA between your beneficiaries and charities of choice.<h2 id="dfe19cf7-d612-4d4b-8598-64e1c71f14cf">Family businesses</h2>Family businesses are especially challenging because owners naturally feel a sense of attachment toward an asset that they devoted much of their lives to.However, their children might not feel the same way, according to Snow.We've certainly seen adult beneficiaries who inherit those assets and who feel really unprepared to handle them," Snow said.If you find yourself in this situation, Snow has the following advice: Make sure your beneficiaries have the skills and desire to be involved early on.If your beneficiaries don't want to take on the business, you have a couple of choices. If you still want to keep the business in the family, you can consider bringing on an outside professional to outsource the business operations. You can also liquidate the business, which will convert business assets into cash quickly.This advice is also applicable to other more complicated assets, such as a family investment vehicle, real estate, or farms."If you have that more complex balance sheet, making sure that your kids understand the complexity of some of these types of assets is really important," Snow said.<h2 id="003978ea-1834-40a4-89f3-9e9de9928686">Collections</h2>Snow often encounters clients who have more unique assets, such as collections of cars, antiques, or artwork.Similar to a family business, these assets might hold a lot of sentimental value but might not be easily passed down.Sometimes beneficiaries will keep an item to commemorate the deceased, but Snow also sees collections being disbanded.If the collection has a high degree of significance to you, consider donating it. Donating collections can be an effective way to circumvent capital gains and estate taxes."Oftentimes that's a really nice way to give to a museum," Snow said. Some people choose to further cement their legacy by attaching their name to their donated collections.<h2 id="8e73448a-3f96-4636-9f1e-e1f59de9f650">Communication is key</h2>At the end of the day, having frequent and clear communication about estate planning is key, according to Snow."A lot of times parents think that their kids understand, but if you were to ask the kids, they would say, 'We have no idea how Mom and Dad think about these things,'" Snow said.Confront potential disagreements over assets like a house early on, and make sure to provide details on complex assets like a family business. Being proactive about inheritance planning can make the wealth transfer process easier for everyone involved.

Dylan Patel may be less of a household name, but for those watching Huang's moves closely, Patel's firm SemiAnalysis has become a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-ai-chip-blackwell-delay-new-annual-product-launch-2024-8">central source</a> of intel.OpenAI cofounder Sam Altman even called him "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-gemini-ai-model-smashes-gpt4-says-semianalysis-2023-8">that semianalysis guy</a>" in a post on X, formerly Twitter, last year. Patel responded with an edited image of Google CEO Sundar Pichai pouring milk into Altman's mouth while holding him by the hair. Patel spoke to BI about the impact of the delay, and how to observe Nvidia like a pro.This Q&amp;A has been edited for clarity and length.BI: Where do you get your information?The team consists of people across the entire supply chain, geographically and technically. We have someone who previously worked as low as ASML (Advanced Semiconductor Materials Lithography), the largest equipment company, and then all the way through to companies upstream, such as former employees of Microsoft, Nvidia, etc. So we have the entire view of the supply chain, from manufacturing, up to models. Also, several people on the team are from hedge fund backgrounds.I think the team goes to more than 50 technical conferences across the entire stack — not just the trade shows, which are not really as valuable, but more the technical conferences where people are presenting papers and advancements in the field.When you establish all these research and consulting relationships, you end up with a large well of information. That is how we're able to get disparate pieces of information that may be known and even common in one part of the supply chain but don't spread far outside it. Engineering especially, is very horizontal. Trying to draw the lines between all the different parts of the stack is very important.BI: There was a recent report about Nvidia's next-generation<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-ai-chip-blackwell-delay-new-annual-product-launch-2024-8"> Blackwell chip being delayed</a>. How common is a delay like this in the semi-world?In semiconductor manufacturing, there's this loop of the design being sent to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chip-tsmc-taiwan-semiconductor-trillion-market-cap-nvidia-ai-asml-2024-7">TSMC</a>, which manufactures. Once you have the stencils, it's a multi-month process to produce chips. Then you send those wafers out to customers.Customers test them to make sure everything works. More often than not, it doesn't. Why? Take, for example, a modern iPhone chip. It has 25 billion transistors and 15 layers of metal. Twenty-five billion transistors are 25 billion on-off switches, and they're perfectly timed and organized so that everything you do on your iPhone happens.AI chips are even more complicated than that. It's impossible to perfectly simulate everything, so you are always going to have issues. Then they'll need to make a few modifications to the design and send it back. That has always happened. And the range of modifications can be major to minor.Nvidia has always had an incredibly aggressive timeline. They've always been really good about shipping either the first or second revision of the chip. Whereas, other companies can go through 12 revisions. Even big companies like AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) tend to go through two, or three, or four revisions.The fact that Nvidia wanted to ramp so fast — this Blackwell ramp was supposed to be the first chip with $100 billion in sales — meant there were some minor delays. It's just a few months at most.But because so many people are affected by that delay, it shakes the entire world. In the past, the customers affected by this would know, and it wouldn't shake up all the way to the top levels of every company.BI: What are your favorite non-revenue indicators to watch at Nvidia?One is the size and use of models.Meta releases a new model, and it's now 405 billion parameters, right? These new models continue to increase the demand for compute voraciously. Now that Meta released this new model, and now that everyone uses these open-source models and doesn't develop their own, everyone switches to this bigger, newer model, and that creates a significant increase in demand.On the flip side, all the way downstream, companies in Taiwan have to report their revenue monthly. You can see the exact ramp of everything as soon as you want to see it.So there's a lot of information all the way upstream in terms of the models and deployments, and all the way downstream to the various sub-component suppliers.The other place I like to look a lot is random suppliers that are very small in niche parts of the supply chain, or suppliers of suppliers.Maybe Nvidia suppliers are very hush-hush, but maybe TSMC's suppliers are very open about what TSMC is ordering and you can estimate what's going to happen to Nvidia's production capacity or ability to sell servers from there.BI: Assuming the initial Blackwell rollout will indeed be smaller than promised, what do you know about who gets to be first in line for the new chips? And why do they get to be first in line?How Nvidia decides who gets to be first in line is a very complicated decision matrix — especially now with the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-mergers-and-acquisition-startup-buying-spree-ftc-investigation-2024-8">investigation by the FTC</a>.There are all sorts of reports that if you purchase their networking equipment, they will push you first in line or similar allegations like that.So, the question is who are they going to prioritize? My sense is that customers who have no choice or are smaller and, therefore need more support from Nvidia would probably be de-prioritized relative to customers who are much larger and have options.For example, Microsoft and Meta are their two largest customers. They also have chip programs internally, but they're not as successful as, say, Amazon and especially Google. But they also went out and bought AMD GPUs. If you're Nvidia, it makes sense to prioritize your biggest customers because they're the ones who are going to purchase the most products. They have a backup plan of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-using-ai-bain-survey-roi-2024-6">buying from your competitor</a>, and they require the least support.The calculus around allocations is difficult. But it would make sense that they prioritize their biggest customers, who purchase from other people and may purchase their networking equipment, whereas companies like Amazon don't purchase their networking equipment. Ruben Gallego in a state where Trump and Harris are tied.</li></ul>As a group of Rep. Ruben Gallego's supporters gathered at a downtown Phoenix bar last Wednesday to watch his Senate debate with Kari Lake, the sense of confidence in the room was palpable, if unusual for a Democratic campaign in a historically conservative state like Arizona."I think he's going to carry this with no problem," said Democratic state Rep. Patty Contreras. "I don't think she stands a chance."That wasn't the assessment made by Contreras, or most other Arizona Democrats, when Lake made her political debut <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/arizona-gop-governor-karrin-taylor-robson-kari-lake-trump-pence-2022-7">three years ago</a> as a gubernatorial candidate. Combative yet charismatic, Lake was quickly recognized as the most skilled purveyor of Trumpism aside from the former president himself. She wasn't simply imitating Donald Trump, but refashioning his political style to fit her own profile as a well-known local TV anchor. It didn't hurt that her opponent was then-Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, who even Democrats will admit is a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/az-gov-candidate-katie-hobbs-defends-refusal-debate-kari-lake-2022-10">less-than-stellar campaigner</a>. "She was a fresh face, she was well-spoken," Contreras said of Lake, adding that Hobbs "sometimes is not as articulate as we would like her to be."Lake was widely expected to win that year, and Democrats regarded her with fear. But then she lost, albeit by just two-thirds of a percentage point.In the intervening years, she has expended the bulk of her political oxygen <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kari-lake-files-lawsuit-challenging-arizona-gubernatorial-loss-maricopa-hobbs-2022-12">insisting that the election was stolen</a> from her as she's traveled the country as one of the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kari-lake-financial-disclosure-book-sales-paid-speeches-2024-7">MAGA movement's biggest celebrities</a>. The consensus that emerged from interviews here with not just Arizona's political experts, but even Republicans who plan to vote for her, is that Lake gradually dug her own political grave by doing so."Don't tell me that you're angry about the last election," said Rep. David Schweikert, a Republican who represents a Scottsdale-area swing district, adding that voters "don't care" about the "resentments" that Lake and other candidates are campaigning on.With Sen. Kyrsten Sinema <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kyrsten-sinema-retiring-arizona-senate-ruben-gallego-kari-lake-2024-3">out of the picture</a> and Lake flailing, Gallego has had the space to run a successful version of the campaign that Vice President Kamala Harris has sought to wage at the presidential level, where a lawmaker who once wore progressivism on their sleeve has successfully triangulated toward the center in the face of Trumpist opposition.<div type="image" title="Rep. Ruben Gallego" height="1500" width="2000" msid="114224427" hostid="261" sizebytes="113218"></div>A large chunk of the state's more traditional Republicans <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kari-lake-arizona-senate-race-gop-support-poll-gallego-2024-4">continue to feel alienated</a> by Lake's denigration of the late Sen. John McCain and his supporters during her 2022 campaign. That's allowed Gallego to court Republicans like Julie Spilsbury, a city councilor in Mesa who's backing the Democratic congressman even as she acknowledges that he's been "pretty far left" throughout his career."I've seen a willingness to moderate," Spilsbury told a small group of reporters at a "Republicans for Harris" event in Mesa last week, adding that both Harris and Gallego are "big-tent Democrats that say 'we want you,' and the Republicans are saying, 'get the hell out of our party.'"The situation is all the more remarkable given that political headwinds in Arizona — a state disproportionally impacted by both <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inflation-housing-food-alice-rent-poverty-healthcare-wage-growth-cpi-2024-6">inflation</a> and the border crisis — have been blowing rightward. While Trump and Harris remain locked in a dead-heat race for the state's 11 Electoral College votes, Gallego boasts a polling lead over Lake that's outside the state's margin of error.Lake's campaign did not respond to a request for comment for this story. But at a press conference last week, she told reporters that she had "zero faith in the public polling" of her race and insisted that her own internal polls showed a tight race. "These polls are meant to take the oxygen out of our movement," Lake argued. "They're meant to keep donors away."<h2 id="7407865c-3d80-4482-87e5-8b8985aa3d54">'She's lost credibility'</h2>Lake remains a skilled politician, a fact that was apparent during last week's debate, where she smoothly lobbed attacks at Gallego as he occasionally tripped over his words. But the congressman's supporters remained relaxed throughout the event, breaking into laughter when Lake professed a desire to put "country over party" or erroneously used the term "UVF" to refer to in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. "She was certainly a juggernaut when she ran for governor," said Kirk Adams, a Republican who was former Gov. Doug Ducey's chief of staff and once served as the speaker of the Arizona House. But today, Adams argued, she's primarily defined by her status as a political loser. "If you were to ask people, 'What do you know about Kari Lake?' There are likely two things that they will tell you: She was a news anchor for a very long time, and she thinks that the 2022 election was stolen from her."It's a facet of Lake's candidacy that rankles even her supporters. Maryjane Carsten, a 71-year-old Republican retiree who lives in Oracle, said she felt like she was "voting for the best of the worst" in the Senate race."I like that she's a conservative," Carsten said as she made her way into Sen. JD Vance's rally in Tucson on Wednesday. "But she just would not let that election go. She just won't let stuff go. She needs to."Compounding that issue is Lake's unclear positioning on abortion. Like many Republicans, she's pledged not to support a national abortion ban, though she told reporters last week that she voted against a ballot measure to expand abortion rights in Arizona. She's also expressed conflicting views on a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kari-lake-arizona-abortion-ban-good-law-2024-4">near-total abortion ban</a> that almost took effect in the state this year, saying that she opposed it only to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/23/politics/kari-lake-abortion-arizona/index.html">bemoan later</a> that it wasn't being enforced."She's lost credibility with a giant portion of the electorate, which, at the beginning of that game, could have been hers," said Chuck Coughlin, a former GOP political strategist in Arizona who's backing Gallego.<div type="image" title="Kari Lake at a Trump rally in Prescott Valley on Sunday." height="1500" width="2000" msid="114224283" hostid="261" sizebytes="185556"></div>Of course, Trump has also refused to concede his last election and has offered conflicting views on abortion. Yet while a Lake win at this point would be an upset, that's simply not the case for Trump. The difference between the two candidates may simply come down to the fact that the former president is, well, a former president who has a mostly positive economic record to run on."The Donald Trump playbook only really works for one person, and that's Donald Trump," said Barrett Marson, a Republican political strategist in Arizona.Mike Noble, the founder and CEO of the Arizona polling firm Noble Predictive Insights, said that his polling had found that voters, including Republicans, simply viewed Lake differently. "She does have all the baggage Trump has, but she doesn't have any of the positives, the policy wins and things like that," Noble said.The election is just over three weeks away, and Lake is now hobbling toward the finish line. She trails Gallego in public polling by an average of 7 percentage points, and she's consistently struggled to keep up with the Democratic congressman's fundraising machine. Last week, Gallego's campaign said that he had raised over $50 million since he entered the race, with $21.7 million of that sum coming in since July. Lake's campaign has declined to release her latest fundraising figures, suggesting they're lackluster.Deep-pocketed national GOP groups have also largely avoided the race, even as they've plunged tens of millions of dollars into <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-senate-races-2024-election-landscape-democrats-republicans-2023-1">more promising targets</a> elsewhere. Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC tied to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, hasn't spent a dime in Arizona this year."Normally, these things are more competitive," said Noble. "This Senate race should be more competitive."
