<ul><li>SEBI has revealed a report on the profit and losses suffered by retail traders in the <keyword id="21711508" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="equity-derivatives" source="keywords">equity derivatives</keyword> segment.</li><li>As per the report, 93% of investors lost their money in the derivatives segment.</li><li>The report also adds that only 1% of <keyword id="19972907" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail-investors" source="keywords">retail investors</keyword> managed to make a profit of ₹1 lakh and above annually.</li></ul> A report by the Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on the profit and losses in the equity derivatives segment has revealed how badly retail investors are performing in the futures and options (F&amp;O) market. There has been an increase in participation in the F&amp;O market by retail investors. With the increased volumes, the government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have been taking steps to keep this under check. “With the increased participation of individual investors in equity and equity derivatives markets, the current study was undertaken to analyse profit and loss patterns for individual traders in F&amp;O during the three years FY22 to FY24, and for all the categories,” said SEBI in its report. This is not the first time SEBI has published such a report. In an earlier report, the watchdog revealed that nearly 90% of retail traders lost money in the equity derivatives segment in FY22. <h2>What are futures and options (F&amp;O)?</h2>Futures and Options (F&amp;O) are financial derivatives used in trading and investing, primarily in stock markets, commodities, and other assets. They allow investors to speculate on the future price movements of underlying stocks or hedge risks. <h2>Retailers lost over ₹1.8 lakh crore in three years</h2>As per the report, retail investors lost a staggering ₹1.8 lakh crore in aggregate losses over the last three fiscal years. Out of the 1 crore investors engaged in the F&amp;O market, 93% of investors or 9 out of 10 investors had an average loss of ₹2 lakh each. The retail investors lost ₹61,000 crore in FY24. As per the report, only 7.2% of retail F&amp;O traders managed to make a profit over the last three years. Among these loss-making investors, around 4 lakh investors suffered an average loss of ₹28 lakh each including transaction costs. What’s more shocking is that only 1% of the investors managed to make a profit exceeding ₹1 lakh after deducting the transaction costs, making one wonder what’s the allure of <keyword id="20852321" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FO-trading" source="keywords">F&amp;O trading</keyword>. Not only are retailers not making any money, but they also spend ₹26,000 per person on average on transaction costs. <h2>It’s not the rich that are losing money</h2>The report further states that 76% of the traders who suffered losses have reported an income of under ₹5 lakh. Nearly half of the traders are under 30 years old, meaning at the start of their careers. Further, over 72% of traders come from small towns. <h2>Addiction? Retailers continue despite losses</h2>Whether it is an addiction or the hope of recovering money, over 75% of loss-making retail investors continued to trade in the derivatives segment despite being in a loss for two years. <h2>Social media influencers to be blamed?</h2>Several social media financial influencers or “finfluencers” have been pushing F&amp;O trading as a get-rich-quick scheme. These financial influencers often use fake trading proofs to exaggerate their returns and push retail investors to enter the derivatives market. The people then push their “courses” or services offering recommendations to users. They charge for this service and users often end up spending money on this after being blinded by the fake proofs. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="112926834" title="SEBI brings in new norms to regulate finfluencers" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> The number of retail traders in the F&amp;O market has seen a massive increase, with traders increasing from around 50 lakh in FY22 to nearly 1 crore in FY24. State-owned BSNL also reported a decline of 1.41 million subscribers. With this, Jio’s subscriber base has increased to 442.49 million subscribers, followed by Airtel with 375.24 million subscribers. He emphasised that it is absolutely critical that in a democracy if someone says something false about the government, to create hatred, to incite violence, or to just create mistrust, "the government must have an opportunity to say no, this is not true". "So there is no censorship, there no restriction on free speech. This is simply about saying what is patently false, is patently false. And that is certainly not to be confused or deliberately distorted to imply that this is a crackdown on free speech," Chandrasekhar said. The minister's comment assumes significance as the decision to notify an entity that will flag false information posted online pertaining to the government has raised concerns in some quarters on whether it gives government absolute powers. "I think there is some misunderstanding about what it is we are trying to do," the minister said when asked about the issue. "Misinformation is expressly an area that has already been prescribed in the rules as an area that platforms have to do significant work in moderating misinformation if they are to enjoy Section 79 protection. It is already mandated in the rules of October 2022," he said. Rather, the fact check unit aims to help platforms in identifying false content posted about the government. "It is not an opinion. It is not about saying that we will create another narrative about the government," Chandrasekhar added. On the digital personal data protection (DPDP) bill, which will be introduced in the coming session of <keyword id="6354721" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="parliament" source="Orion">Parliament</keyword>, the minister said the draft legislation has undergone a lot of consultation and is designed as "a truly world class piece of legislation". "I have absolutely no doubt that the DPDP Bill will create deep behavioural changes among platforms in India who have for long exploited and misused personal data," the minister said. At the same time, those who have played fair will not get affected, and will continue to do the right thing, he observed. "Those who have done it (misused data), tracked consumers, used cookies they certainly will have to go though deep behavioural change... Those who are already doing it right, have nothing to fear. But those who have, in a sense, lived off this model of exploitation will certainly have to reconsider," minister said. He expressed hope that the bill will come up in the Monsoon session of Parliament. The draft bill - which has seen an overhaul after its withdrawal in August last year - details the citizen's rights on personal data, with provisions that makes entities handling personal data accountable for managing it with safety and security in a responsible manner. "The purpose of this bill is to provide for the processing of digital personal data in a manner that recognises the right of individuals to protect their personal data, the need to process personal data for lawful purposes and for other incidental purposes," an explanatory note of the draft bill said. The proposed data protection legislation allows the transfer and storage of personal data in some countries while raising the penalty for violations. The proposed legislation stipulates consent before collecting personal data and provides for stiff penalties of as much as Rs 500 crore on persons and companies that fail to prevent data breaches including accidental disclosures, sharing, altering or destroying personal data. On being asked about Meta being fined a record-breaking USD 1.3 billion recently by European Union regulators for violating EU privacy laws, and whether India too can look at large financial deterrants for Big Tech for non-compliance of laws, the Minister said idea is not about competing with the EU on size of penalties. "I don't think we are in the business of competing with the EU in terms of the size of the penalty, but the formulation of penalties in this Bill is sufficient to incentivise every data fiduciary or any platform to behave correctly, to follow the law, and do the right thing," he said. The days when platform could exploit the data of consumers is fast coming to an end, he said, adding there are many powers under the bill that have been given to the Indian consumer to interrogate, search, check what data the platforms have. "...and I think certainly it's a balance of protecting the consumer rights, as well as continuing to allow innovation and investments," the minister said. On WhatsApp spam call issue, Chandrasekhar said that the government has called out to WhatsApp and other messenger companies about the problem and emphasised that it is unacceptable. "They have responded with alacrity and responded very quickly. They are searching out many solutions. We have also asked them to give to us what are the overseas telecom carriers from where these originate, so that we can talk to BSNL, and to our own <keyword id="150664" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="telecom-department" source="Orion">Telecom Department</keyword> to make sure that these carriers are also warned that there is unlawful activities originating from their networks, and that if that continues, we may have to look at some kind of a discussion of whether those networks will be allowed to terminate in India as well," he said. The government and players are not adversaries, rather they work in partnership, he said, adding that a safe and trusted internet for 1.2 billion consumers "is good for business, government, and for citizens". Data protection bill to drive deep behavioural changes for platforms exploiting data: Chandrasekhar

<ul><li>A new price war may emerge in the broadband sector with Jio Fiber’s aggressive pricing of its broadband subscriptions.</li><li>A similar price war triggered when Reliance Jio entered the market in 2016 with rock bottom pricing of mobile data plans.</li><li>The competitive intensity in the broadband sector will increase as major players to fight to hold on to customers as the price war shifts, according to a report by Elara Capital.</li></ul>Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio seems to be set to repeat history with its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/compare-jio-fiber-broadband-plan-against-airtel-act-youbroadband-and-spectra/articleshow/71642187.cms">aggressive pricing</a> of broadband subscriptions. Undercutting most of the competition, Jio Fiber’s promised monthly plans <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/jiofibers-plans-look-cheaper-but-airtel-is-giving-you-more-data/articleshow/70997713.cms">starting at</a> ₹700 per month and a minimum speed of 100 MBPS. At half the price, the company's introduced a new top-up that only costs ₹350 per month and offers 50GB at speeds of 10MBPS, which will cut to 1MBPS after fair usage policy (FUP). Similarly, when Jio entered the market back in 2016, data became <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/indias-mobile-tariffs-arent-the-cheapest-in-the-world-anymore/articleshow/72342660.cms">cheaper than ever before</a>. But, it was not without its pitfalls. The move also pushed out most of the competition in the market. And now, major players in the market — Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea — are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/reliance-jio-airtel-and-vodafone-idea-may-raise-tariff-soon/articleshow/71757089.cms">fighting to recover losses</a> as their debt continues to rise. With the way Jio Fiber’s pricing its products so far — it looks like there might be another price war on the horizon. The makings of a price war When data prices on mobile fell, it brought more people online. But, after three years of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/mukesh-ambanis-telecom-war-escalates-telecom-industry-debt-to-3-9-lakh-crore/articleshow/70906000.cms">racking up debt</a>, telecom operators are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/telcos-revenue-rising-but-accumulated-debt-eating-into-it-moodys/articleshow/72271809.cms">hiking their prices back up</a> by as much as 40%. They have also asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to set up a floor price for data services in order to regulate tariffs because the price war has gotten so intense that no operator will voluntarily correct their prices. Meanwhile, smaller players that couldn’t survive the competition were either shut down or acquired by one of the major players. No new company could enter the market since it was unviable to offer the same prices as the telco giants. Now, Jio’s employing the same strategy to the broadband sector. “We expect the competitive intensity to rise as incentives including free content, could increase, especially from, to achieve the targeted customer base,” according to Elara Capital. Small local players, like YouBroadband and ACT Fibernet, could be forced out of the market as Jio’s squeezes on margins. Larger players, like Vodafone Idea and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/jiofibers-plans-look-cheaper-but-airtel-is-giving-you-more-data/articleshow/70997713.cms">Bharti Airtel</a>, will have to defend their market share while also trying to grow. And government players, which include BSNL and MTNL, will struggle with their already troubled profits. “While telecom firm’s contemplating mobile tariff hike was encouraging, the price seems to be shifting to FTTH [Fiber To The Home] market and could pressure margin,” stated Elara Capital’s report. The telecom sector’s price war had Jio in the lead within a short span of time, not just in terms of users, but also in terms of revenue market share. And, the same seems to be set to happen in the broadband sector — again. Others believe Jio Fiber’s broadband won’t be disruptive asserting that other operators offer higher value on a per GB basis. The archipelago, of around 300 islands in the Indian Ocean, is a Union Territory of India, which if you look at the map seems closer to Thailand and Myanmar than to India. She tells Business Insider, not able to control her excitement, how she has never imagined experiencing such clean and untouched white sandy beaches in India. "I mean, you can expect such an experience in countries like the Philippines, but in India... my mind was blown,” she says. <div type="image" title="Elephant beach, Havelock" msid="81127084" hostid="261"></div> The picturesque white sandy beaches of the <keyword id="162996" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Andaman-Islands">Andaman Islands</keyword> are not considered by most as an option for a beach vacation. Dr. Vasireddy, along with a few friends, decided to ditch the idea of vacationing in Goa and chose a place where they can get away from it all — plus, there was the added advantage of the location being COVID-free. In fact, it was the first place in India with zero<a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/andaman-and-nicobar-islands-indias-first-to-be-covid-free/articleshow/80657352.cms"> active cases</a> as of 03 February 2021. Regardless of the fact, she was pleasantly surprised that people on the Island continue to take safety very seriously and said all the locals were wearing face masks. In case you forget to wear yours, they will politely inform you that if you don't, you will get 'challand’ (a challan). Please note that it is mandatory to present an RTPCR Covid negative test at <keyword id="107932" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="PORT-BLAIR">Port Blair</keyword>. The authorities validate the test against the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) website. Only once the validity is confirmed do the officials stamp the document, and without this stamped paper, you will not be allowed to take the ferry to any of the Islands. Flights from all major cities of the country, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kochi, land at the capital Port Blair. <div type="image" title="Havelock Island" msid="81128095" hostid="261"></div> HAVELOCK ISLAND The island not only offers some stunning beaches, but it also has some of the top diving destinations in the country. It is an excellent place to learn deep-sea diving so that you can explore the underwater marvels. Havelock Island is one of the few places where inexperienced divers can try out a single dive instead of signing up for a full course. The water is teeming with tropical fish, sea turtles, stingrays and much more. It also has a healthy population of colourful live corals. The best part is that you don't need to be a swimmer to try scuba diving. The crystal blue waters are so clear that you can always opt for snorkelling if you want to skip scuba diving. There is also an excellent night kayaking expedition that takes you through the mangroves. The unreal experience of watching the water bioluminescence below and the sky filled stars above cannot be paralleled. <div type="image" title="scuba diving, Havelock" msid="81126940" hostid="261"></div> There is so much to see in Havelock that it is best to hire a bike or cycle. But we must warn you that while happily cruising on well-made tar roads you may land up literally nowhere. "Some (roads) took us to beaches and others just abruptly ended by fields or the forest," Dr. Vasireddy tells us. <div type="image" title="Roads leading to nowhere, Havelock" msid="81127015" hostid="261"></div> Beaches <keyword id="1578932" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Radhanagar-beach">Radhanagar Beach</keyword> (Beach No.7), Elephant Beach, and Vijaynagar Beach (Beach No.5) are some of the most well-known beaches in Havelock. Radhanagar beach is flanked by the ocean on one side and lush rainforest on the other. This west-facing beach is ideal for catching the sunset. You can also walk down to Neil's Cove, a secluded spot perfect for sunbathing and a spot for swimming in shallow water. <div type="image" title="Sunset at Havelock" msid="81127095" hostid="261"></div> Elephant beach may not be easy to get to, but the beauty of the place more than makes up for the effort. The beach features some bleached driftwood and logs that provide an excellent backdrop for a photo-op. This is also an ideal place to go snorkelling. Vijaynagar beach is where the buzz is. This is where most of the restaurants, hotels and snorkelling centres are situated. The beach faces east and is, therefore, a great place to catch the sunrise. However, because the water is shallow and strewn with rocks, swimming here is not the easiest. <div type="image" title="Red snapper grilled in lemon pepper sauce with rice and roasted potatoes" msid="81127169" hostid="261"></div> Food The local food, if idyllic surroundings are not enough, is usually a combination of Indian and continental cuisine that is absolutely delicious. Dr. Vasireddy recommends - Fat Martin's Cafe in Vijaynagar that serves south Indian food including a delicious Nutella dosa; Anju Coco that strangely enough serves the "best biriyani”; Something Different serves excellent continental seafood pizza and amazing desserts; Moonlight Cafe is great for seafood. The restaurants here are a seafood lovers paradise, serving up a fantastic variety of fresh red snappers, calamari, prawns, and so much more. That being said, there are plenty of vegetarian options too. Accommodation There are plenty of hotels to choose from high-end Taj Hotels to more affordable options like Wild Orchid, SilverSand Beach Resort, Munjoh Ocean Resort and Symphony Palms Beach Resort. The hotels are clean, and most are environmentally conscious. Most hotels and restaurants on the Island provide only RO water and not plastic bottles, as is sadly the norm elsewhere. And if you choose to buy water, the local stores have nothing smaller than 2-litre bottles to reduce the amount of plastic used. <div type="image" title="Bambooka, the government ferry" msid="81127801" hostid="261"></div> How to get there From Port Blair, the best way to get to Havelock is by ferry. The government ferry from Port Blair to Havelock takes around 2.5 hours but please note that the outside deck area has no seating, so you will have to bring something to place on the floor to sit on. The booking process is slightly cumbersome, but you can get a travel agent to take care of everything, which will still be cheaper than private options. MV Makruzz and Coastal Cruise are the private companies that ferry people across to the Island. They take around 1.5 hours to get to Havelock. Connectivity If you are hankering for some serious digital detox there is no better place than Havelock. There is limited to no connectivity on the island. BSNL is the only cellular service that works but the network is patchy. Hotels usually provide wi-fi access, but most are limited to the lobby area. <div type="image" title="Port Blair" msid="81127917" hostid="261"></div> PORT BLAIR While Andaman and Nicobar Islands' capital may not seem all that appealing as a tourism destination, there are plenty of places you can visit while here. There is a high probability of you spending the night there since the ferries to the islands do not operate at night. So depending on your flight timing, chances are, one way or the other you will have to stay in Port Blair. If you opt to stay in Port Blair, <keyword id="10800405" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chidiya-Tapu">Chidiya Tapu</keyword> (Bird Island) is an excellent place to explore. The area offers some fabulous diving spots, including Mundapahad, ideal for beginners and the old shipwreck, a site for advanced divers and home to clownfish, schooling snapper, resting ray and lots of colourful corals. If you want to give the water a break, the place is an excellent spot for birdwatching. The mangroves and rainforests here play host to a bunch of migratory birds and flowers. You can also hike to Mundapahad lighthouse. ReefWatch Marine Conservation, in collaboration with Lacadives, offers an informative mangrove walk (when the tide is out) and informs you about the surrounding ecosystem. <div type="image" title="The view from Mt. Harriet" msid="81127981" hostid="261"></div> Dr. Vasireddy decided to stay at the relatively new Big Tree Resort featuring only eight cabins, an in-house restaurant and a supremely friendly dog called Momo. Momo insists all guests should play with him and will bring you a coconut husk that you need to pry out of his mouth and throw so that he can fetch it, thus providing an excellent way to drive away the blues. <div type="image" title="Cellular Jail" msid="81128022" hostid="261"></div> Another site that may be worth a visit, especially if you are a history buff, is the colonial prison called Cellular Jail (Kālā Pānī) that is where most freedom fighters, including Veer Savarkar, were shipped off to before independence. There is an informative light show in the evening and the tour of the jail itself is quite fascinating. <div type="image" title="Limestone Caves" msid="81128047" hostid="261"></div> BARATANG MANGROVE FOREST AND LIMESTONE CAVES To experience the fascinating limestone caves and mangrove forests in <keyword id="5041058" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Baratang-Island">Baratang Island</keyword>, you will have to head to the Jirkatang check post (a little over an hour-long-drive from Port Plair), which marks the beginning of the area where the Jarawa tribes of Andaman Islands live. After the clearance is done, you can drive through Jarawa reserve forest, but note that taking photos is strictly not prohibited. Once you reach the other end, you have to take a ferry to cross the water and arrive at Baratang. Here you can take a permit and board a speedboat to ride through the mangroves and arrive at a trekking spot from where you have to walk for 1.2 km through villages to reach the spectacular limestone caves. The journey may sound daunting, but this is one of the unforgettable experiences you wouldn't want to miss. However, respecting the people's privacy and regulations, particularly of the tribals, is of paramount importance.
