As of March 2021, <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>’s total lending market size stood at ₹156.9 lakh crore, recording around 100% growth between FY2017 and FY2021. Retail and commercial lending each contribute 49% to total lending in India while microfinance contributes about 2%. Over the recent years, there have been commendable focussed policy initiatives such as <keyword id="6392137" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jan-dhan-yojana" source="Orion">Jan Dhan Yojana</keyword>, <keyword id="3060238" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mudra-yojana" source="Orion">Mudra Yojana</keyword> and <keyword id="13518253" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-strategy-for-financial-inclusion" source="Orion">National Strategy for Financial Inclusion</keyword> (2019-2024), however, India has a long way to go in terms of financial inclusion. Availability of formal credit to low-income populations is a big challenge and rural areas are underserved. According to the <keyword id="6354424" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-bank" source="Orion">World Bank</keyword>’s Global Findex Database 2017, only 8% of the Indian population borrowed money through a formal channel like financial institutions. <keyword id="6355185" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rural-india" source="Orion">Rural India</keyword> accounts for about half of GDP, but only about 9% of total credit and 11% of total deposits. While flow of credit at the bottom of the pyramid has improved over the last decade, there is a huge missing middle segment. MFIs (microfinance institutions) have been significant credit providers to micro-enterprises and individuals through JLGs (joint lending groups). MFI segment with average ticket size of less than ₹40,000 has been reasonably serviced by over 200 institutions with outstanding credit of ₹2.5 lakh crore as at March 2021 and growing at 23.8% CAGR (compounded annual growth rate) during FY17-21. Under the Mudra Yojana, the programme aimed at funding the unfunded micro enterprises and small businesses with loans up to ₹10 lakh, ₹15.52 lakh crore were disbursed to 29.55 crore loan accounts during its 6 years of its operations (FY16-FY21), however, average ticket size was still low at ₹52,500 in this period. Micro enterprises with higher credit need of ₹1-5 lakh is a severely underserved segment with only a handful of focussed players. Compared to MFI outstanding credit of ₹2.5 lakh crore, in loans of ₹50,000-10 lakh, which is a much larger market, outstanding credit stands at just ₹1 lakh crore. Micro enterprises faced a huge credit gap of ₹8 lakh crore in 2018 as per IFC. Key issues restricting the flow of credit to this segment include the lack of documents such as income tax returns (ITR), goods and services tax (GST) and adequate banking records. As a result, issues related to income assessment have emerged as major supply-side barriers. Pure Fintech model is not suitable since the above data points are lacking and borrowers need hand-holding in disbursements as well as collections as many upgrade from JLG borrowings. Nonetheless, the emergence of a handful of new age non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) is changing the lending landscape by introducing a model that captures the best of fintech and conventional credit features, transforming the protocols of lending for micro-enterprises and individual business loan requirements. Unlike legacy banks, new age NBFCs are analysing alternative data for income assessment, applying technology more effectively and have an agile and on-ground workforce. For micro-enterprises seeking business loans, lack of collateral is no longer a major constraint and a good credit score or credit history is good enough. Considering their more suitable lending norms for this segment, new-age NBFCs are gaining popularity when it comes to small ticket business loans. Besides, NBFCs approve loans far more quickly than banks and the entire end-to-end process from application to disbursal can be completed within a few days. Players in this space with less than 1% GNPA (gross non-performing asset) even after three COVID-19 waves have proven that backed by a strong underwriting, efficient collection model and leveraging technology, lending to this segment is scalable with a significant impact on growth in income of micro-entrepreneurs. Given the lakh of micro and small enterprises across India that fall outside the purview of formal financial systems, including self-employed individuals who remain ineligible for formal credit, new age NBFCs are playing a pivotal role in promoting the goal of inclusive development. Undoubtedly, such digital lending players can serve millions of unbanked sections across India, influencing their lives positively. India's National Pension System (NPS) has bucked the downtrend triggered by Covid-19 outbreak and the subsequent nationwide lockdown to contain it. The NPS was extended to all citizens of India on a voluntary basis from May 2009 and to corporates in December 2011 and to Non-Resident Indians in October 2015. "There has been a spark... Almost more than 33,000-34000 people have joined during these first three weeks of April. The 'Total Assets Under Management' has also seen a record rise of Rs 12,000 crore," PFRDA's Chairman Supratim Bandyopadhyay told IANS. According to Bandyopadhyay, the corporate sector has shown a keen interest to get their employees enrolled into the NPS scheme. Similarly retail customers of the scheme have also grown. "We have seen a healthy response from the corporate customers. There are at least seven (companies) in the pipeline. They have either already got their board approval or in the process of getting the approval to subscribe," he said. Currently the PFRDA administered system has seven fund managers. "There has been a massive value addition in the stock prices during this time as we are able to invest in really good quality stocks at very reasonable prices," he said. On the impact of Covid-19, he said: "Till now we have not seen any redemption pressure. In fact, there has been negligible redemption from both the scheme." "In APY, we have made provisions that no automatic deduction from the accounts of subscribers happen for three months up to June." While the APY is a pension scheme focused on the unorganised sector workers, the NPS is a voluntary, defined contribution retirement savings scheme. Besides the NPS, some mutual funds and insurance companies also offer pension plans, which are not under the jurisdiction of PFRDA. Apart from this, the normal retirement plan options include EPFO, while retirement gratuity is offered by employers to their workers and employees. As of March 31, 2020, the combined total AUM of NPS and APY stood at Rs 4.17 lakh crore. If you have a home loan, the amount you pay towards the principal component of the home loan is also eligible for deductions under section 80C. So, when planning for 80C investments you need to first understand the amount you need to invest, which would in most cases be less than ₹1.5 lakh. Let us take a look at 5 investment options to avail 80C deductions in 2024. Equity Linked Savings Scheme Equity Linked Savings Schemes (ELSS) serve as a tax-saving avenue under section 80C of the Income Tax Act, offering benefits like a lower lock-in period of three years compared to other tax-saving instruments. ELSS primarily invests in equity and equity-related instruments, providing potential for higher returns over the long term. “ELSS helps you save tax and grow money at the same time,” Suneel Dasari, CEO, EZtax.in. However, it's essential to acknowledge the risks inherent in equity investments, including market volatility and fluctuations. The returns aren't guaranteed and can vary based on market performance. ELSS funds as a category have given returns of 26.57%, 19.55% and 17.13% in one, three and give years respectively. Public Provident Fund The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a government-backed long-term savings scheme offering tax benefits under Section 80C. It allows contributions up to ₹1.5 lakh annually, making the invested amount tax-deductible. Investing in PPF provides a secure avenue for long-term savings, with a fixed tenure of 15 years and the option to extend in blocks of 5 years. It offers a 7.1% rate compounded annually. The risks associated with PPF are notably low due to its government backing, ensuring safety and stability. However, the lock-in period of 15 years and limited liquidity might pose constraints for individuals seeking shorter-term investment options. National Pension Scheme The National Pension System (NPS) is a voluntary retirement savings scheme offering tax benefits of up to ₹1.5 lakh under Section 80C and an additional ₹50,000 under Section 80CCD (1B), providing substantial tax savings. Investing in NPS is ideal for retirement planning, offering a choice of investment options across equities, corporate bonds, and government securities. Its unique feature includes two accounts: Tier I (non-withdrawable till retirement) and Tier II(withdrawable at any time). While NPS provides the opportunity for market-linked returns, it also carries market risks associated with investment in equity and debt instruments. Additionally, the Tier I account has a lock-in period until retirement, restricting liquidity. “Tax benefits will be applicable only to the investments under Tier 1 NPS Accounts. Tier 2 NPS accounts are not eligible for tax benefits,” says Dasari. Tax saving FDs A 5-year Fixed Deposit (FD) offers a secure investment avenue with a fixed interest rate for the specified tenure, typically ranging from banks to post offices. The invested amount is eligible for deduction under section 80C. Investors opt for 5-year FDs due to their stability and assured returns, making them suitable for those seeking low-risk investment options. However, these FDs may have lower returns compared to market-linked instruments like equity-based investments. Additionally, the lock-in period of 5 years limits liquidity and flexibility. Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a government-backed savings scheme designed for the financial security of the girl child. It offers tax benefits under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, allowing contributions up to ₹1.5 lakh annually to be tax-deductible. Investing in SSY provides a dual advantage of tax savings and creating a corpus for a girl child's future expenses like education or marriage. The scheme offers an attractive interest rate(8.2%) and has a maturity period of 21 years from the date of account opening or until the girl child reaches 18, whichever is earlier. “For higher education purposes you can withdraw 50% of the amount deposited,” says Dasari. The risks associated with SSY are minimal as it's a government-backed scheme.

Tax saving countdown – With 2 months to go, options to consider under 80C

New Delhi, <keyword id="4742614" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-housing-and-urban-affairs">Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs</keyword> (MoHUA) has joined hands with <keyword id="830092" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato">Zomato</keyword> for home delivery of <keyword id="6361952" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Street-Food">street food</keyword> in six cities. As a part of Prime Minister <keyword id="456744" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="street-vendor">Street Vendor</keyword>'s AtmaNibhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) Scheme, the MoHUA entered into MoU with Zomato, to bring <keyword id="6770639" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="street-food-vendors">street food vendors</keyword> on its food-tech platform. In a statement MoHUA said that initially MoHUA and Zomato will run a pilot program by on-boarding 300 vendors across six cities namely - Bhopal, Ludhiana, Nagpur, Patna, Raipur, Vadodara. "The street vendors will be helped with PAN and fssai registration, training on technology/ partner app usage, menu digitization and pricing, hygiene and packaging best practices. Upon the successful completion of the pilot, MoHUA and Zomato plan to expand this initiative across the country in phases," it said. As per the MoHUA, this will give street food vendors online access to thousands of consumers and help these vendors grow their businesses. The MoHUA also launched the Mobile Application for PMSVANidhi se Samriddhi- Socio-economic profiling of PM SVANidhi beneficiaries and their families to link them to various Central government Schemes. "Covid-19 pandemic has restricted consumers from stepping out and forced them to follow physical distancing norms. In the given scenario it is important to connect Street Food Vendors with technology-enabled platforms to help them grow their business, thus helping them gain financially," said the ministry. In a first of its kind initiative, MoHUA entered into an MoU with Swiggy on October 5 last year and it is now joining hands with Zomato to empower street food vendors with digital technology. <ul><li><keyword id="7363049" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="janitri" source="Orion">Janitri</keyword> provides ‘medical-grade fetal and maternal monitoring solutions’ to use at hospitals or homes. </li><li>The Bengaluru-based startup started selling its products in March 2021, after spending five years on development. </li><li>Arun Agarwal, the founder of Janitri, walked away with an investment of ₹1 crore for a 2.5% equity stake from <keyword id="544908" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Namita-Thapar" source="Orion">Namita Thapar</keyword>. </li></ul>Despite medical advancements, high infant and maternal mortality rates remain a prevalent concern in India. As of 2019, the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in India <a href="https://pib.gov.in/PressReleaseIframePage.aspx?PRID=1796436">stood </a>at 30 per 1,000 live births. Lack of institutional births, low-birthweight babies and maternal mortality are other challenges that the country faces. The government introduced several schemes and frameworks like the Janani Suraksha Yojana in 2005; and a framework — Reproductive, Maternal, New-born, Child, and Adolescent Health (RMNCH+A) in 2013 to address these challenges. However, lack of access to primary healthcare centers and other issues affect women and child development in India. Janitri, the latest startup pitched on <keyword id="11924074" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shark-tank-india" source="Orion">Shark Tank India</keyword> S2, aims to tackle this problem with “medical-grade fetal and maternal monitoring solutions” via wearables, and affordable AI-enabled devices and software. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="A patch, a wearable and a software" comment="subhead2" text="A patch, a wearable and a software">A patch, a wearable and a software</cmsannotation> Founded by Arun Agarwal, Janitri is a Bengaluru-based startup that launched operations in March 2021. It offers three products — Keyar Patch, Daksh, and Navam wearable. Navam wearable can be worn on the wrist and helps in fetal monitoring, but it’s still a prototype. Made of silicone and plastic, Keyar Patch can be attached to the stomach of a pregnant woman and it monitors fetal heart rate, maternal heart rate, labour contractions and fetal movements. It’s available for ₹29,000. Keyar Patch connects to Daksh, which is a mobile application that can run on any Android-backed mobile or tablet. It helps monitor mothers during intrapartum and postpartum periods of labour by continuously sending relevant information to the doctors. It also generates critical alerts, notifies the staff, and is available for an annual subscription cost of ₹10,000. Together, Keyar Patch and Daksh allow doctors to remotely assess fetal movements to help both the mother and the child. Aggarwal claims that timely monitoring during the last trimester and labour can help save 80% of the women and/or newborns who succumb to complications during pregnancy. Most hospitals traditionally use a cardiotocography machine commonly known as a fetal monitor. However, it isn’t digital and produces graphs in thermal print that doctors study. It also requires the nurse to change the position of the probes on the mother’s belly every 30 minutes. His decision to pursue a degree in biomedical engineering stemmed from his desire to bring a change in the healthcare system in India. “I had a dream to solve the grassroot level problems in healthcare through technology. I heard my grandmother’s story of how, among the six siblings she had, one died within a year of being born. When I started my B.Tech I deduced, this a huge problem globally, and technology has not yet reached this area,” shared Agarwal. He worked as a patent analyst in the healthcare industry for two years to gain financial stability, and gained further insight into the industry by attending Healthcare Hackathons, visiting hospitals, and watching live deliveries, before starting Janitri. For five years, he worked on R&amp;D, clinical trials, and regulatory compliance for Janitri. During this time, the company received grants from Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), BIll &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation, the Government of Canada, and the Government of Karnataka. It also raised ₹2.35 crore in February 2020 in a seed round at a valuation of ₹15 crore from an angel investor. It raised an additional ₹1.15 crore via convertible notes in April 2021 from the same investor. As per Agarwal, Janitri has raised ₹7 crore so far in an equal mix of grants and equity. The startup has applied for 12 patents, four of which have already been granted. In its first year of operation, the company earned a revenue of ₹1.03 crore. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Offers galore, but conditions apply" comment="subhead2" text="Offers galore, but conditions apply">Offers galore, but conditions apply</cmsannotation> While all the sharks were impressed by the product, Namita Thapar, executive director at Emcure Pharmaceuticals, was the first to make an offer — ₹75 lakh for 5% equity, with ₹25 lakh debt. While she did match the past valuation of the startup, the founder remarked that the past valuation was an older, pre-money valuation. After which, Thapar doubled the valuation to ₹30 crore and made an offer of ₹60 lakh for 2% equity and ₹40 lakh debt. “In this country, if we wish to make healthcare effective, we can’t do it without the help of technology. The day pharma and technology join hands, we can create magic,” said Thapar. Lenskart co-founder Peyush Bansal and CarDekho co-founder Amit Jain made a joint offer of ₹1 crore for 2.5% equity, valuing the company at ₹40 crore. However, the offer was contingent on Janitri making sales worth ₹20 crore in the next year, failing which the sharks’ equity will double to 5%. Thapar matched this offer while adding that with her support, Janitri could easily achieve sales worth ₹50 crore. John Keynes, who popularised the theory, was still a century behind Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula who already had a ‘food for work’ program working in Lucknow when famine struck in 1784. In today’s day and age, India’s Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is using technology to streamline the national ‘food for work’ scheme to bring financial and economic inclusion. The JAM trinity — Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, and mobile payments — has eased the validation of beneficiaries and the process for releasing funds, according to Economic Survey 2018-19. Wages directly to the people Since it’s induction in 2005, the programme was riddled with issues. But, applying Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and Aadhaar-linked Payments (ALP), the Indian government has been striving to reduce delays in the payment of wages, curb corruption and political interference, and plug up any leakages in the system. As a workforce programme, MGNREGA’s mandate is to alleviate distress and ensure payments happen in a timely manner. Before DBT, wages were transferred into panchayat bank accounts and most of the workers had to collect their wages from the gram panchayat office. And, in order for DBT to work — the workers needed bank accounts. That’s when the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) was implemented to bring about universal access to banking facilities. The Economic Survey 2018-19 highlights that before the implementation of ALP and DBT, there used to be an average lag of 90 days before wage payments for recieved. After their implementation, that lag has been cut down one-third from 35% to less than 10%. Culling out the ‘ghosts’ in the system Bringing in <keyword id="7829443" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="aadhaar-linked-payments">Aadhaar linked payments</keyword> ensured that the government would not be funding any ‘ghost’ beneficiaries. The National Electronic Fund Management System (NeFMS), implemented in 2016 and currently functional in 24 states, bolsters that effort by providing a real time database of wages being credited into bank or post office accounts by the central government. NREGAsoft, a local language workflow based e-governance system, looks at registration and muster rolls, a form of attendance register signed by workers to check false reporting of numbers. The service isn’t available to the public but does make it easier for the government to keep track of who is employed under the scheme and whether they are actually showing up for work. The government’s also held accountable of its actions with the use of mobile apps like Gram Samvaad Mobile App and JanMnRega were rural workers have direct access to information and can give their own feedback on how the system is working. The supply demand gap Since the government now access to data, the Economic Survey 2018-19 asserts that it will be able to implement MGNREGA more effectively by pushing government officials to provide more jobs in distressed areas. This should help bridge the demand supply gap between jobs available and the enlisted worker by using data provide jobs where there is more demand for them and vice versa. The survey also highlights how the vulnerable sections of the society — women, scheduled class, and scheduled tribes — have increased their participation in the program during times of distress. Going forward, the government wants to expand the number of jobs available to workers under the scheme, upskill the workers it has enlisted, expand the use of JAM, and use digital infrastructure to expand MGNERA beyond wages to also offer micro-insurance, micro-pensions and micro-credit to the underserved sections of society.
