Netflix vs Disney+ Hotstar: Subscription plans compared

But for a company like Disney whose primary business is content, eating losses is not feasible in the long-term. It’s why the company brought back Bob Iger from retirement and asked him to course-correct – Iger’s first action was to lay out a $5.5 billion cost-cutting plan. While Disney lost IPL to Reliance’s Viacom18 before Iger was brought back, it did not really make much from its subscribers in India – according to the company’s December 2022 quarter results, Disney+ Hotstar subscribers contributed $0.74 per user per month on average, significantly lower than the $5.95 contribution from Disney+ subscribers in the US and Canada. The Disney+ Hotstar service is available only in India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. Netflix, which is far more expensive than Disney+ Hotstar in India, reported an average revenue per member of $7.69 in the Asia Pacific region. This is after a 25% reduction in its subscription prices, which now start from as low as ₹149 per month for the most basic plan, translating to ₹1,788 per year. Netflix’ top-tier plan costs ₹7,788 per year. In contrast, the most expensive Disney+ Hotstar plan costs ₹1,499 per year. Essentially, Disney+ Hotstar’s most premium plan is still cheaper than Netflix’ most basic plan. On the other hand, Viacom18, which bagged the lucrative IPL streaming rights for ₹23,758 crore, will provide 4K streaming for free via the JioCinema app. The way forward for Disney+ Hotstar is aggressive investments in creating original content, according to Taurani. However, it needs to click with subscribers who were so far used to HBO’s popular catalogue. Without HBO and IPL, 15 million subscribers could flee Disney+ Hotstar in 2023

Hotstar quietly rolls out Disney+ in India -- with dozens of originals including Star Wars and High School Musical

New Delhi, With the start of the World Cup cricket tournament, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have rolled out plans to woo cricket fans. Reliance Jio has started offering multiple prepaid plans bundled with Disney+ Hotstar where users will be able to watch World Cup cricket matches. Bharti Airtel has launched two plans, which include unlimited data for 2 days against a payment of Rs 99 and 6GB of additional data with 1-day validity for Rs 49. On the other hand, Jio has rolled out monthly, quarterly and annual plans bundled with data, unlimited voice, and subscription to Disney+ Hotstar mobile. Jio's basic plan is priced at Rs 328 and comes with 1.5 GB high-speed data per day for 28 days and a 3-month Disney+ Hotstar mobile subscription. In addition, Jio has also introduced a Rs 758 plan, which offers 1.5 GB of high-speed data per day for 84 days and comes with a 3-month Disney+ Hotstar mobile subscription. Disney+ Hotstar Premium set to become the second most expensive OTT subscription in India

There are five new plans in total starting at ₹501 and going up to ₹2,595. The new plans have been introduced to include the recently launched Disney+ Hotstar Mobile plan. Vi previously offered the Disney+ Hotstar VIP subscription along with its recharge plans. In addition to a one year subscription of Disney+ Hotstar, these Vi prepaid plans also offer unlimited voice calls, 100 SMS per day and 3GB of data per day along with extra data up to 48GB. Customers also get access to Vi Movies and TV Classic service for movies, TV shows, live TV and news. There’s also a data add-on pack priced at ₹601 that offers 75GB of data and Disney+ Hotstar Mobile for one year. This booster pack can be used along with an existing recharge plan. Vi launches new prepaid recharge plans with Disney+ Hotstar Mobile subscription

New Delhi, June 7 () Telecom operator Reliance Jio has partnered with streaming service Disney+ Hotstar to offer its prepaid users one year complimentary subscription to Disney+ Hotstar VIP. Disney+ Hotstar VIP offers Hotstar specials, live sporting action, latest bollywood, superhero movies, among others. As per the information on Jio.com, prepaid users opting for plans starting at Rs 401 will be able to avail the Disney+ Hotstar VIP subscription worth Rs 399 for one year, at no extra cost, over and above the other benefits they get in a plan. The offer can be availed by Jio prepaid customers opting for specific monthly pack, annual pack, and add on data packs. The Rs 401 monthly plan provides 90 GB data, unlimited voice calling and access to Jio apps valid for 28 days, and users recharging with this plan will also get one year subscription of Disney+ Hotstar VIP. The offer is also available on Rs 2,599 annual plan which offers 740 GB data, unlimited voice calling and access to Jio app for 365 days, as well as for those opting for combo pack of data add-on vouchers, starting at Rs 612 (12 vouchers of Rs 51). That’s nearly a third of its normal annual subscription of ₹999. The Hotstar VIP plan includes all of the platform’s Indian language content, original content that falls under ‘Hotstar Specials’ and live streaming of the Indian Premier League. Its only drawback is that the VIP plan doesn’t include international content. But, that might not be what most users are looking for anyway. And focusing on regional content, original content and live cricket streaming is pretty safe bet to increase subscription considering how users in Indian consume video online. Since the VIP plan includes all the Star shows that generally broadcast on TV, the plan is also ideal for users who primarily use the service to catch up on their favorite shows. An EY analysis shows that catch-up TV accounts for 70-90% of the total content viewed on the online platforms of large broadcasters — like Hotstar. Being local The 199 million users Indian consumers who will access the internet in English by 2021 dwarf the 536 million users who are expected to use regional languages for online services. Aside from Hindi, Marathi and Bengali are expected to be the drivers of growth as well as per a report by KPMG and Google.

Overall, more than 202 million users came online to watch the Indian Premier League in 2018 and the average time spent watching the cricket event up from 30-35 minutes during the ninth season to 40-45 minutes during its tenth season.
