<ul class="summary-list"><li>The <keyword id="6355174" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ford">Ford</keyword> <keyword id="247578" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mustang">Mustang</keyword> continues to be America's most recognizable sports car, and one of its most long-running.</li><li>But it's about to undergo its biggest transformation yet with the upcoming all-electric <keyword id="8344026" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mustang-mach-e">Mustang Mach-E</keyword>.</li><li>We break down all the changes and innovations the Ford Mustang has undergone in its 56 years that have made it so iconic.</li></ul><br /><p><strong><em style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Times, sans-serif;">Following is a transcript of the <keyword id="21654" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="video">video</keyword>.</em></strong></p><p><strong>Aj Caldwell:</strong> This here is Ford's latest <keyword id="10108467" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="shelby-mustang">Shelby Mustang</keyword>. At 760 horsepower, it's the fastest, most powerful Mustang the company has ever produced. However, that monster of a machine evolved from a sports car that took 17 seconds to go 60 miles an hour. So, how did the first Mustang go from this to that?</p><p>To understand that evolution, we have to go back to the beginning. In the '60s, Ford was looking to create a car for baby boomers that was different from the large sedans and family <keyword id="20632" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cars">cars</keyword> their parents were driving.</p><p><strong>Commercial:</strong> The Mustang's combination of hot styling, hot performance, and cool price will make it a big thing with the youth market.</p><p><strong>Aj:</strong> So, in 1964, the company released its first Mustang. It was small but sleek and stylish. And although it wasn't the most powerful car on the market, it had a lot of power for its size. Just how much muscle are we talking? Well, Ford's top-of-the-line model packed a 4.7 V-8 capable of 271 horsepower. It went from 0 to 60 in 7 1/2 seconds. And while it wasn't the fastest car on the market, Ford quickly discovered that those weren't its limits.</p><p>Ford immediately saw the Mustang's potential as a bona fide race car. So they brought in racing engineer <keyword id="1049625" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Carroll-Shelby">Carroll Shelby</keyword>. Carroll Shelby: Only Mustang makes it happen. These aren't just words. It's a fact. Aj: Shelby gave them not one, but two street-legal race cars with the GT350 and the GT500. The GT500 was given the same high-powered V-8 engine found in the Le Mans-winning GT40. This Mustang on steroids got adjustable shocks, upgraded wheels, a larger anti-roll bar, and, best of all, a starring role next to Nicolas Cage in "Gone in 60 Seconds."</p><p>By the end of the 1960s, the Shelby Mustang, now being built in Ford's factory, was given the company's famous Cobra Jet engine. The Cobra Jet was based on the GT500's previous engine, but upgraded with enormous valve heads, a bigger carburetor, and a special performance air cleaner. Allegedly, the Cobra Jet could produce over 400 horsepower, but Ford reported it at 335 so it could qualify for easier-to-win classes at drag races.</p><p>Ford's Mustang was a colossal hit. They sold 22,000 cars on the first day and a million cars in two years. But its success sparked competition from Chevy with its Camaro and Pontiac with the Firebird. Ford needed bigger and bigger engines to compete. So the Mustang itself grew. But when tougher fuel-emission laws forced automakers to make lower power output, the company was left with a Mustang that was now bloated and boring. Sales tanked, and Ford had to rethink their prized pony car.</p><p>By the 1970s, big cars were out. Americans fell in love with European sports cars and Japanese compacts. Ford realized the problem and responded with the Mustang II. It was 500 pounds lighter and 20 inches shorter, but it also tossed that reputation for speed right out the window. Its tiny standard engine offered as little as 88 horsepower, and its one optional engine was a V-6 that barely made 100! The top-level Mustang took 12 seconds to hit 60 mph.</p><p>But Americans weren't looking for horsepower, and oil prices had hit in '73, and gas prices skyrocketed. The economy was tanking, and consumers needed to save money. Coincidentally, the new Mustang showed up just in time. It was the perfect solution because it was affordable and fuel efficient. Ford sold almost 400,000 units in just the first year.</p><p>But as the gas crisis ended, Americans were back to wanting big, fast cars. Ford answered with a 5-liter V-8 for the Mustang, but it was a far cry from the performance Mustangs were producing a few years earlier. At 134 horses, it barely got a top speed of 100 mph. It was time for the Mustang to go back to its roots.</p><p>Ford answered it up with one of its most iconic cars to date: the Fox Body Mustang. Ford had been using the Fox platform for everything from compact cars to station wagons. It had a unibody structure, flexible chassis, and wide engine bay. When they added the Mustang to that list of vehicles, it was an instant hit. Even today, its versatility has made the Fox Body Mustang extremely popular with car tuners.</p><p>Ford's new pony car was both longer and wider, but it cut weight in its suspension. It weighed 200 pounds less than the Mustang II, improving gas mileage and reducing drag. But the muscle-car era had ended. The country was in an economic depression, and heavy fuel-emission laws were in place. Another oil crisis in '79 forced Ford to shrink its top-level V-8 engine to a smaller one that powered the Mustang 0 to 60 in a less-than-exciting 10.8 seconds.</p><p>Ford tried to keep speed junkies and the EPA happy by introducing the Mustang's first-ever turbocharged engine. It was a tiny little four-cylinder engine that Ford called the Lima and hoped could be a performance-level engine, but it constantly overheated, and Ford engineers just couldn't figure out the kinks with turbocharging.</p><p>But Ford's introduction of fuel injection changed everything. Up until then, engines relied on carburetors to mix fuel and air for combustion. But on a four-cylinder engine, some of the cylinders were further away than others, and you couldn't guarantee the proper fuel-to-air mixture. With fuel injection, heavy air pressure is used to deliver fuel from the gas tank directly into the engine cylinders at precise bursts. There's no longer a need for a carburetor. With the mix happening right inside the engine's cylinders, the engine becomes more reliable, powerful, fuel efficient, and even has less poisonous emissions. This breakthrough allowed Ford to bring back the Lima, now even more powerful. The full-size V-8 was back too, and it was the Fox Body's most sought-after engine.</p><p>Ford added a more aerodynamic design in '87, and the Mustang's popularity exploded again. The Ford Mustang's base price cracked $10,000 for the first time in history. Sales plummeted, and people were over the Fox Body design. Surveys showed that consumers wanted something more reminiscent of the original Mustang.</p><p>For the Mustang's 30th anniversary, Ford introduced the fourth generation. It had a new jelly-bean-type shape but featured nods to the original Mustang, especially in the cabin. In '93, Ford assembled some of its best engineers and gave them one mission: Win over the world's biggest speed freaks. They were called the special vehicle team, and they blessed the world with the Cobra SVT. With the Cobra model, we get the Mustang's first-ever independent rear suspension. This means each wheel on the rear axle was able to move independent of one another, allowing them to stay planted even in the tightest turns. While the Fox Body still had the advantage in a drag race, the new Mustang was much better on the track.</p><p>For 2003, Ford added to the Cobra SVT's upgraded engine the same supercharger found on the Ford F-150 Lightning pickup truck. It went from 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds. Ford's precious pony car was once again a street-legal race car. The Mustang's No. 1 rival, the Chevy Camaro, couldn't keep up. Sales plummeted, and Chevy axed the sports car. Mustang was now in a class all its own.</p><p>The fifth generation finally saw the Mustang get a platform of its own. For the first time in 30 years, the Mustang finally resembled the iconic design of its original. By 2011, Ford would add to it a brand-new V-8 known as the Coyote. This engine was rated at around 412 horsepower and priced at $30,000. With the Coyote under the hood, the Mustang had a faster Nürburgring time than BMW's $60,000 M3. In 2007, Ford and Carroll Shelby would revive their partnership and produce the first GT500 in almost 40 years. By 2013, they were cranking out the most powerful American V-8 you can find on the road.</p><p>But that independent rear axle that was so well received was ditched to cut costs. But consumers didn't care; sales skyrocketed. But two things were coming that were gonna ruin the party. The 2008 recession and the return of the Camaro. Chevy took note of the public's reaction to the new Mustang, and it decided to revive its pony car. With one two-hour-and-23-minute commercial called "Transformers," Chevy took back the market. The last five years of the fifth-generation Mustang were the worst five years of the Mustang's sale history. The Camaro was America's favorite pony car.</p><p>So, in 2015, Ford gave us what we know as the present-day Mustang. It's an accumulation of all of the Mustang's successes in the past. It has that beloved squared-off design from its very first model, and it finally balances fuel efficiency with performance. The short-lived, but popular independent rear suspension has finally made its way to standard equipment. Combined with the wider body for a low center of gravity, it makes for the best-handling Mustang in years. And an even faster version of the Coyote V-8, dubbed the Predator, has been put in the GT500, making 760 horsepower with a 0 to 60 of 3.5 seconds, making it the fastest street-legal car Ford has ever made.</p><p>Ford's next Mustang isn't quite the car you'd expect. The Mustang Mach-E is an electric crossover, but it is a return to Mustang's original ethos. In a world where young people are more environmentally conscious, the Mach-E could be the company's latest attempt at capturing the next generation of drivers.</p>

The new 911 is the first all-new version of the Porsche icon since 2011.</p><p>The next generation Porsche 911 will launch with the mid-grade Carrera S and all-wheel-drive Carrera 4S models. According to Porsche, the base Carrera model will be unveiled early next year. And with all the spy shots of Porsche prototypes running coming out of Europe, expect the Turbo model to follow shortly after. Not that long ago, the Porsche didn't even bother to include cup holders at all on the 911. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-911-cup-holder-great-piece-engineer-2016-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">current generation had collapsible units that fold away</a> into the dash on the passenger side of the car. While ingenious in design, it always felt a bit too flimsy to handle a venti iced coffee. Fear-not traditionalists, a manual transmission will be available at a later time. </p><p>According to Porsche, the 911 Carrera S can do 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 191 mph when equipped with the PDK transmission and the Sport Chrono package. Porsche just unveiled the all-new 911 sports car with 443 horsepower and night vision

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The <keyword id="10045545" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lotus-evora-gt">Lotus Evora GT</keyword> is arguably the best driver’s car currently on the market.</li><li>It’s a 2020 model, yet its hardware and philosophy basically remain unchanged since it came around in 2009.</li><li>The Evora GT doesn’t have flaws, it has quirks. Quirks such as being loud inside and difficult to get in and out of. </li><li>My loaner had a starting MSRP of $96,950, but after special Airforce Blue paint and a fancy sound system, final MSRP came to $105,550.</li></ul><p>I should have known.</p><p>The moment I put the $105,550 <keyword id="1058816" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Lotus-Evora">Lotus Evora</keyword> GT into second gear after pulling out of my garage, I should have known. </p><p>Should have known that I — a sick, hopeless, masochistic nerd — would fall in love with a very silly car in about seven seconds. And because you're reading this, it's probably because you, too, are a sick, hopeless, masochistic, Lotus-loving nerd. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Lotus Evora GT KL_12" height="1666" width="2500" msid="78463392" hostid="261"></div><p>Here's the truth, though: the Evora GT only needs seven seconds to utterly win you over.</p><h2><strong>The numbers</strong></h2><p>The Evora is <keyword id="71296" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Lotus">Lotus</keyword>' larger, slightly cushier model when compared to the automaker's renowned <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-new-lotus-elise-cup-250-is-insanely-quick-2016-2">Elise</a> sports car. But that isn't saying much, because the Elise is famously not-large <a href="https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a23582753/salvage-title-2005-lotus-elise-for-sale/">nor particularly utilitarian</a>.</p><p>After the Evora launched in 2008 and <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a15130329/lotus-a-historical-timeline/">began production in 2009</a>, Lotus spawned many versions of it as the years wore on: the 400, Sport 410, GT430, et cetera. Last year, the Evora GT was <a href="https://media.lotuscars.com/en/news-articles/evora-gt-north-america.html">introduced for the North American market</a>.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Lotus Evora GT KL_33" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78463395" hostid="261"></div><p>Its mid-mounted engine produces a claimed 416 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, driven to the rear wheels from a supercharged 3.5-liter V6 <a href="https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a20112603/toyota-camry-vs-lotus-evora-400-track-test/">sourced from the Toyota Camry</a>. Weighing in at a feathery 3,104 pounds, the Evora GT is available with either a six-speed manual, which I had, or automatic transmission. I don't think I need to tell you which is my preferred option.</p><p>Technically, the Evora GT that Lotus was so kind to loan me for the weekend is a 2020 model. But I'd consider that model-year designation to be in name only; inside, mechanically, philosophically, the Evora is older. Much older. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Lotus Evora GT KL_14" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78463399" hostid="261"></div><p>In 2009, when the Evora began production, far more cars were supercharged. Far more cars had hydraulically assisted steering systems. In 2009, it wasn't that odd or unusual if your car had a manual transmission.</p><p>But now, 11 years later, few cars are supercharged. Many of them have more efficient electronically assisted (see also: very artificial-feeling) steering. Hardly any of them have manual transmissions. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Lotus Evora GT_Lotus_3" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78463403" hostid="261"></div><p>The Evora is perhaps the most analog sports car on the market today by virtue of simply refusing to evolve. Everything else fell away around it. (You're also welcomed to speculate that perhaps Lotus, a company so often on the brink of financial collapse, straight up didn't have the cash to innovate. Still, it's charming.)</p><h2><strong>Features, not flaws</strong></h2><p>The infotainment screen in the Evora is sourced from Alpine and offers a user interface I'm pretty sure I last experienced during Barack Obama's first term in office. The tire pressure and fuel gauges have the resolution of a Tamagotchi screen. The backup camera offers a picture quality that would rival the crappy spring break video you shot on your Razr flip phone. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Lotus Evora GT KL_45" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78463407" hostid="261"></div><p>The car's immobilizer feature — which prevents the engine from running unless a key is present, something <a href="http://49210a70594045aae060-9ee7f563068e7bbd2f9eb533a1de6b33.r31.cf3.rackcdn.com/59275_1360838155_sn_mr_electrics_evora.pdf">Lotus calls</a> an "automatic vehicle security" measure — hinders both would-be thefts and just about everyone else.</p><p>The feature dictates that you must sometimes hit the unlock button on the key before turning it in the ignition and pressing the engine-start button, or else the car won't turn on. (This was explained to me by the nice man who dropped off the Evora. I, in turn, explained it to several confused parking valets and one bewildered car-wash attendant.)</p><div type="image" title="2020 Lotus Evora GT KL_43" height="3750" width="2500" msid="78463411" hostid="261"></div><p>Sitting in the Evora means your butt is only about eight inches off the ground, which basically means it's on the ground. The manually adjusted seats did not scoot forward far enough for me to reach the pedals, so I had to supply my own cushion.</p><p>The seat also did not raise, which meant that I was seated lower than I am used to. I spent the weekend craning around the car's A-pillars in order to see.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Lotus Evora GT KL_46" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78463418" hostid="261"></div><p>I'm also not convinced the interior was designed for actual humans to use or enjoy. The trunk is minuscule and runs toasty, owing to the fact that it sits right above the car's exhausts.</p><p>The back "seats" would have a better time fitting a large watermelon than a real person. The one (1) cup holder is so tiny and out of reach that you might as well use the optional extra cup holder, also known as your bemused front passenger.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Lotus Evora GT KL_25" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78463421" hostid="261"></div><p>If it sounds like I'm complaining a lot, it's because I am. Right off the top of my head, here are six reasons why the Evora GT is bad:</p><ol><li>The clutch is quite heavy</li><li>You sit so low you can't see out of it</li><li>The rear trunk is tiny and gets very hot after extended driving</li><li>There's no <a href="https://mycardoeswhat.org/safety-features/hill-start-assist/">hill-assist</a></li><li>It's very loud inside</li><li>There are barely any interior comforts to enjoy</li></ol><div type="image" title="2020 Lotus Evora GT_Lotus_7" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78463426" hostid="261"></div><p>At the same time, here are six reasons why the Evora GT is, in fact, spectacular:</p><ol><li>The clutch is quite heavy</li><li>You sit so low you can't see out of it</li><li>The rear trunk is tiny and gets very hot after extended driving</li><li>There's no <a href="https://mycardoeswhat.org/safety-features/hill-start-assist/">hill-assist</a></li><li>It's very loud inside</li><li>There are barely any interior comforts to enjoy</li></ol><div type="image" title="2020 Lotus Evora GT KL_23" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78463430" hostid="261"></div><p>As soon as you start driving, you won't care that you can't see out of it. The loudness won't bother you because the engine sounds incredible. You learn to balance the heavy clutch everywhere, including on steep hills.</p><p>You get used to packing light and being OK with hot luggage after a long drive. You laugh at the contortionist exercises you have to perform to get in and out of it. You leave behind petty desires for earthly comforts such as soft leathers and pillowy suspension.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Lotus Evora GT_Lotus_1" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78463432" hostid="261"></div><p>The Lotus doesn't have flaws; it has <em>quirks</em>. These aren't weaknesses; they are <em>features</em> — unique to an old car masquerading as a new one and completely endearing to the punishment-loving freaks who value the simple, tactile act of driving above everything else. </p><p>Driving the Evora GT kicks you in the ass and leaves you begging for more. It's all about the <em>experience. </em>Is your body ready?</p><h2><strong>Time travel</strong></h2><div type="image" title="2020 Lotus Evora GT KL_32" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78463436" hostid="261"></div><p>Fire up the engine and it settles in a raspy idle behind you, sending trembles through the cabin like a snarly live thing. There's effort required to putting in the heavy clutch, but the car is so light and has so much torque that you don't need to give it any gas to get it moving. It makes the Evora GT the perfect manual transmission stop-and-go traffic commuter. </p><p>The transmission itself is outsourced from Aisin, an automotive company whose <a href="https://www.aisin.com/profile/customer/">clients</a> include major automakers like Mazda, Subaru, Honda, Volvo, Toyota, and others. But a company rep told me Lotus completely rebuilt the unit, with major changes going into making first and second gear taller.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Lotus Evora GT KL_34" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78463446" hostid="261"></div><p>This makes the car feel like it wants to be revved into forever when in first and second gear (and also third and fourth). The short-throw shifter slots into the tightly housed gates with a sharp, precise rifle-bolt action, articulating the feel of the industrial clunking and sliding beautifully up and into your fingertips. </p><p>The tiny, lightweight, magnesium steering wheel could have come from a go-kart, but the Evora GT's steering is so acutely tuned that even the gentlest toggle results in a wiggle of the front wheels. Power delivery is beautifully linear and predictable; no hiccups from a lag in the nonexistent turbos. The supercharger provides substantive punch down low in the revs, pulling mightily to redline with its <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHC5pINsLyc">signature whine</a>. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Lotus Evora GT KL_29" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78463451" hostid="261"></div><p>At approximately 4,000 rpm, valves in the exhaust system open up. The Evora GT then goes from emitting merely buzzy growls to a full-throated, burbling V6 roar. The noise is not unlike the howl of a Nissan GT-R — and from a V6 out of a freaking <em>Camry</em>! My friends, I saw God. </p><p>By way of design, the Evora GT's balance is superb, thanks to the engine being placed between its axles. The car behaves like a dancer, pivoting around one central point under higher-speed and more urgent cornering. You're challenged to push further, to corner harder. Your confidence grows with the information fed up through the steering wheel. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Lotus Evora GT KL_26" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78463455" hostid="261"></div><p>The Evora GT isn't slow by any means, but rather just fast enough. Its 416 horsepower is so perfectly proportioned with its 3,104-pound weight that you can have a hilarious time exploring the car's abilities and not go to jail immediately for speeding.</p><p>The human race has not yet achieved time travel, but getting into a Lotus is the closest thing to going back in time. Driving the 2020 Evora GT was like driving a car from 15 years ago. It was a time capsule riding on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Lotus Evora GT KL_7" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78463461" hostid="261"></div><p>The Evora GT is a car you wear, not drive. It fits like a glove, reacting to the road seemingly as a response to your intent instead of physical input. It is the closest you can get to riding a motorcycle without actually getting on one. That sense of vehicular freedom and dogged impracticality are very nearly the same. </p><p>Certainly, you could buy yourself a Porsche 718 Cayman. That would be a great choice — the mature one, even — because you'd be getting a new car that largely accomplishes the same things the Lotus does. Underneath the $5,900 Airforce Blue paint, the Evora GT's hardware is positively retro.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Lotus Evora GT KL_47" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78463464" hostid="261"></div><p>But here, retro gets the job done. You don't need the latest technology to make the time-honored act of driving great.</p><h2><strong>The last of its kind</strong></h2><p>I can't imagine cars like the Evora GT have much longer on the market. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Lotus Evora GT_Lotus_5" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78463466" hostid="261"></div><p>As such, the Evora is already a standout in age and technology. This isn't to say that the car isn't outstanding, but as time goes on, we move a little bit further away from the world and market the Evora was born into. Other <keyword id="660753" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sports-cars">sports cars</keyword> of that day and their successors — the BMW M3, Chevrolet Corvette, Porsche Cayman, Ferrari F430, Audi R8 — have all gone either turbocharged, removed their manual transmission options, or both. </p><p>With each passing day, the Evora becomes a little less relevant — and as is, it's already made by a little-known boutique British automaker.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Lotus Evora GT KL_40" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78463471" hostid="261"></div><p>In 2017, <keyword id="88395" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Geely">Geely</keyword>, the massive Chinese automotive company that also owns Volvo and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/polestar-2-review-price-ev-volvo-tesla-specs-horsepower-electric-2020-8">Polestar</a>, <a href="https://jalopnik.com/lotus-is-saved-1795501792">bought a 51% stake in Lotus</a> from a Malaysian car company called Proton. Whatever Lotus does next, including its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lotus-evija-1972-horsepower-electric-supercar-starts-production-full-specs-2020-2">all-electric Evija supercar</a>, will have Geely fingerprints all over it.</p><p>And if Geely's ideas for Lotus are anything like what we've seen with the other brands it controls, then it's probably safe to say Lotus is headed fully in the electrified direction, too.  </p><div type="image" title="2020 Lotus Evora GT KL_13" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78463474" hostid="261"></div><p>It makes thinking about the Evora GT even more bittersweet. Especially now, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/06/business/pickups-and-suvs-lead-way-to-a-record-year-for-automakers.html">with the way people shop</a>, there's really no return on investment to keep selling a loud, rattly car with a manual transmission. </p><p>I welcome our EV and emissions-free future. I truly do. It'll be good for all of us. But it doesn't mean that I won't miss wonderful cars like the Evora GT. Nerds like me — all 26 of us, loud and proud — love Lotuses because they are egregiously impractical, incredible to drive, and contrary to just about every aspect of a soul-numbing SUV. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Lotus Evora GT_Lotus_10" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78463475" hostid="261"></div><p>We're one and the same, this Evora GT and me. I think it takes a bit longer than seven seconds to fall in love with <em>me</em>, though you'll have to ask around. I've never fallen in love with myself before. And I have tried.</p><p>But we're both <a href="https://jalopnik.com/please-enjoy-us-reading-our-hate-mail-and-drinking-wine-1839673497">a little brash</a>, <a href="https://jalopnik.com/stay-fancy-motherfuckers-1842565069">a little uncouth</a>. We're both in it (life, the act of driving) for the fun of it and definitely <a href="https://twitter.com/francis_lam/status/773221506172215296?lang=en">not for the practicality</a>. Faced with intense competition, we develop technologies from which our production vehicles also subsequently benefit," Mercedes-Benz chairman Dr. Dieter Zetsche said in a statement. </span></p><p><span>"We are drawing on our experiences and successes from three constructors' and drivers' world championships to bring Formula 1 technology to the road for the first time: in Mercedes-AMG Project ONE."</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59b704a99803c51d008b46ef-1405/17c698007.jpg" alt="Mercedes AMG Project One" data-mce-source="Mercedes-Benz" /><p class="source"><span>Mercedes-Benz</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>At the heart of the Project One is a hybrid drive unit lifted directly from Mercedes-AMG's Formula One racer. In total the drive unit can produce more than 1,000 horsepower. </span></p><p><span>The system consists of a 1.6 liter, turbocharged V6 engine with an atmospheric red line of 11,000 RPMs. The engine's crankshaft is attached to an electric motor that can virtually eliminate turbo lag while generating electricity by harnessing the engine's kinetic energy. In Formula One circles, this electric motor is called the Motor Generator Unit Kinetic or MGU-K. The engine and MGU-K duo drive the rear wheels while producing more than 670 horsepower.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59b705719803c523008b4708-1244/17c698005.jpg" alt="Mercedes AMG Project One" data-mce-source="Mercedes-Benz" /><p class="source"><span>Mercedes-Benz</span></p><p class="caption">The Mercedes-AMG Formula One-based drive unit.</p></div><p></p></div></div>The engine features a split turbocharger design that keeps the hot exhaust gasses that power the turbo away from the compressor, thereby leading to more power through cooler and denser air being fed into the engine. The two sides of the turbo are connected by a shaft, which itself is equipped with a 121 horsepower electric motor capable of powering the compressor in case there isn't enough boost coming from the exhaust gasses. The folks in F1 call this electric turbo the Motor Generator Unit Heat or MGU-H. </span></p><p><span>Additionally, Mercedes installed two electric motors, each producing more than 161 horsepower, on the front axle of the Project One, thereby giving it a virtual all-wheel-drive system with true torque-vectoring capabilities. </span></p><p><span>That's right, the Project One has one engine and four electric motors. </span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59b706b79803c51e008b4725-2000/17c698006.jpg" alt="Mercedes AMG Project One" data-mce-source="Mercedes-Benz" /><p class="source"><span>Mercedes-Benz</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>The Project One features an automated AMG-Speedshift eight-speed manual transmission.</p><p><span>And the performance figures are staggering. Mercedes-AMG declined to release a 0-60 mph acceleration time. However, the company claims the Project One can reach 124 mph in less than six seconds and reach a top speed of more than 217 mph. </span></p><p><span>With a full lithium-ion battery pack, the Project One has an all-electric range of 25 miles.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59b706df38d20d1f008b4758-1681/17c698011.jpg" alt="Mercedes AMG Project One" data-mce-source="Mercedes-Benz" /><p class="source"><span>Mercedes-Benz</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>All of this advanced Formula One technology comes at a price.
