"Trying to sleep without electricity would have been life-threatening for me."By Tuesday, Wilson had three extension cords running from his truck to the house to power the CPAP machine, a few fans, and their home internet connection. His children — ages 20, 15, and 13 — are happy to have access to the internet again, Wilson said."That has really calmed their nerves and anxiety with all of this," he said, noting that two of his children are autistic and rely on electronic devices more heavily, he said.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>On a trip to Melbourne, Adrian Chia envisioned a holiday home to unplug from the world.</li><li>He sold his IT business and partnered with two friends to build Big Tiny, a tiny house startup.</li></ul>How nice would it be to leave everything behind, unplug from the world, and relax abroad?This thought lingered in Adrian Chia's mind after a two-week family vacation exploring the Great Ocean Road in Melbourne in 2016.Shortly after returning home to Singapore, he floated the concept of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-city-life-quits-job-build-tiny-house-wood-denmark-2024-9">living an unplugged life</a> by his friend Dave Ng, whom he'd met in his 20s during mandatory national service."We were just chitchatting, but Dave started thinking about it seriously," Chia, now 43, told Business Insider. Ng came up with the idea of creating a tiny house on wheels — a mobile house that could be easily relocated if a particular location did not attract guests.In 2017, the pair decided to sell their businesses — Chia had been working in IT and Ng in waste management — and start a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-build-own-tiny-home-company-plans-2023-4">tiny house business</a> called Big Tiny. They invested 100,000 Singapore dollars, or around $77k, each, and dove into brainstorming their first prototype."I knew I was venturing into uncharted territory," said Chia, who was married with two young kids and had a newborn at the time.<h2 id="b90f8f35-563a-4d9d-9797-e15f7148fc10">An early obstacle</h2>With no experience in architecture or building, their first roadblock was figuring out how to build a tiny house."I can't even change the door knob at home," said Chia, adding that the thought of having to fit a kitchenette, a bedroom, and a living room into a 20-foot space was daunting.They hired an architect to help with the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/couple-lives-in-tiny-home-on-wheels-with-office-bedroom-2023-6">design of the house</a> and agreed on a few essentials. First, the house had to be on wheels. Yeo had worked as an account director and manager at several marketing agencies.Together, they raised around SG$4.2 million over two funding rounds, Chia said. That includes SG$3.8 million in the second round, which took place in 2021.<h2 id="2f26daf1-a207-42de-80b6-4a8c216f56ad">Developing their tiny houses into a profit-sharing business</h2>After garnering attention from local media, the team started to receive inquiries on how to purchase tiny houses, Chia said.So, in 2017, the team started a program that allowed people to buy a tiny house for around SG$90,000. In return, they managed the hotel side of the business by renting the unit back from the buyer. They either rented the tiny house for two years and paid 8% a year or five years and paid 10% a year. Big Tiny then earns from the profit of nightly stays, Chia said.Although the headquarters is in Singapore, Big Tiny's first move was to send <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/live-in-a-tiny-mansion-home-so-could-afford-california-2023-10">tiny houses</a> out to the rest of the world. The homes had a modular design — flat packed "like Ikea furniture," as Chia describes.<h2 id="86541299-29a2-4f07-931a-d1593e686640">In 2023, they set up tiny houses in Singapore</h2><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiny-home-village-atlanta-south-park-cottages-photos-booker-washington-2024-3">The tiny house movement</a> encourages <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiny-house-new-yorker-first-time-experience-2022-7">minimalistic and sustainable living</a>. Although the movement has taken off in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiny-house-movement-future-2021-1">countries like the US</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiny-home-tube-shape-surprising-things-europe-slube-photos-2023-2">Germany</a>, it has been less popular in Singapore.In 2021, an opportunity arose for Big Tiny to set up houses in Singapore under a government initiative promoting innovative business ideas.The government awarded Big Tiny state land, for which the company pays rent, to build their <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stay-tiny-home-remote-lazarus-island-singapore-2024-8">tiny houses on Lazarus Island</a> — one of the eight Southern Islands in Singapore."We jumped on it," Chia said.In an email response to BI, a representative from the Sentosa Development Corporation, an organization under Singapore's Ministry of Trade and Industry, said the initiative aimed to complement the existing environment of Lazarus Island by introducing "light-touch" recreational uses.Additionally, the response noted that Big Tiny's houses were equipped with sustainable features, which were in line with their goal of reducing vacationers' carbon footprint on the island.The government also awarded another company a chance to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/luxury-tent-glamping-into-the-woods-lazarus-island-singapore-2024-9">build nine tents nearby.</a>Since opening the tiny house resort in April 2023, Chia said, it has been running on an average of about 90% occupancy. Guests have to book a few months in advance to secure their stay. He added that they have been cash-flow positive since their inception.In August, BI was able to book a stay for SG$380 a night, less than three weeks in advance, although only a few tiny houses remained available at the time. At Lake Stella in New Zealand, two hours north of central Christchurch, guests can hike the surrounding mountains or take a dip in the lake. "When I was speaking with Dave, it was just an idea of putting tiny houses in rural areas so that people can recharge themselves in nature," he said.He said they never thought they could build tiny houses in his own garden — let alone transport them worldwide.And although <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/business-partnership-ended-friendship-partners-friends-2024-1">working with close friends</a> can be tricky, Chia credits their successful collaboration to clearly defining their roles.While Chia oversees revenue and strategic development, Ng heads operations and production, and Yeo focuses on branding."Whenever we face problems, we will call for a discussion. Everyone will have ideas on how to get things resolved," he said."But at the end of the day, the person leading the aspect of the business will take ownership and decide on what is the best course ahead."

Nvidia is an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/saibala/2024/09/30/nvidias-venture-capital-arm-is-silently-investing-millions-into-healthcare/">investor in Moon Surgical</a>, a robotics company that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/moon-surgicals-maestro-system-powered-by-nvidia-holoscan-paves-the-way-to-next-generation-laparoscopy-with-over-200-patients-treated-302092824.html">uses Nvidia's Holoscan platform</a> for its surgical assistant robot, which provides an extra set of arms to hold and manipulate surgical instruments, like adjusting the cameras used inside the body during laparoscopic surgeries.But Nvidia sees robots being used far beyond the operating room — including to monitor a patient for falls in their hospital room, or bring them fresh linens, Powell said. She pointed to Mayo Clinic, which started deploying <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1763236350828000">its own linen delivery robots</a> earlier this year at its Florida campus to autonomously ferry fresh sheets from room to room."You could imagine someday when you get an X-ray scan, you'll have a room that you just step into. It has cameras such that it knows where you're in the vicinity of this scanner; it'll tell you where to stand in front of the scanner. Nvidia's venture capital arm, NVentures, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.abridge.com/press-release/collaboration-nvidia">invested in Abridge in March</a>; Abridge is now reportedly raising more money at a <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=356af929f731a2f0148d8a19a4ea58643477dfa1feeb9af322049efcfa0b44d8&amp;postID=672105613a35c2732d44e6df&amp;postSlug=nvidia-bring-ai-robots-to-hospital-2024-10&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theinformation.com%2Farticles%2Felad-gils-latest-ai-bet-is-in-health">$2.5 billion</a> pre-money valuation. More than 100 other passengers were also treated for various injuries, making it one of the worst <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/serious-injuries-due-to-turbulence-are-extremely-rare-2024-5">turbulence incidents</a> in recent history. Several passengers suffered traumatic injuries, including paralysis, skull and back trauma, and brain injuries, <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/turbulence-singapore-airlines-samitivej-hospital-f0147699fb6433c9e0bcfd00692502bc">The Associated Press reported</a>.Damages won't be awarded until an investigation is completed, an aviation lawyer told South China Morning Post — a process that could take years. But the injured passengers on board have a means to seek payouts through a more than two-decade-old treaty.The Montreal Convention, or MC99, is an international agreement that governs global airline liability in passenger death and injury cases. The treaty was created in 1999 to establish a more unified set of airline policies that can protect passengers and hold airlines accountable, according to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.iata.org/en/programs/passenger/mc99/">International Civil Aviation Organization (IATA)</a>. Part of the agreement stipulates that passengers who suffer injuries caused by an airline can recover up to $170,000, the IATA wrote in a report."MC99 is designed to be a single, universal treaty to govern airline liability around the world," the IATA wrote.One unnamed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ryanair-passenger-compensated-33-000-after-breaking-leg-on-staircase-2023-9">woman who flew with Ryanair in 2020 was paid $33,000</a> by the Irish budget airline after she broke her leg when exiting the aircraft. The woman cited the Montreal Convention in her claim.Another airline passenger, citing the treaty, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/delta-passenger-sues-for-1-million-says-faulty-armrest-broke-his-rib-2024-5">sued Delta earlier in May</a>, claiming he broke a rib after the armrest collapsed when he leaned on it. Green moved from England to the island in 2013. The following has been edited for length and clarity.My dad was a diplomat, and, as a kid, my family moved a lot. I grew up in several countries <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unique-travel-lessons-from-someone-who-lived-around-the-world-2022-1">around the world, </a>including Antigua, Bangladesh, Mozambique, and Kenya.In 2010, when I was 20 and working as a flight attendant for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ryanair-easyjet-wizz-europes-budget-airlines-compared-2024-5">easyJet</a> in England, my dad received a new posting at the Edinburgh of the Seven Seas.I initially thought he was moving to Scotland. But I misunderstood, as Edinburgh of the Seven Seas is a settlement in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-life-edinburgh-of-the-seven-seas-tristan-da-cunha-most-remote-settlement-in-the-world-2019-2">Tristan Da Cunha</a>, one of the world's most isolated settlements with only around 236 inhabitants.To get to the island, you must fly to Cape Town and then travel seven to 10 days and over 1,700 miles west across the South Atlantic Ocean. There are only around 10 scheduled trips a year, which are operated by three different ships. Two of the ships carry up to 12 passengers, and there's one ship that can carry 40.In 2012, I decided to take a six-week holiday to visit my family. When I arrived, a man on the island came to help with my luggage. His name was Shane, and I ended up meeting him again later in the island's only pub.After I left the island, Shane and I continued to talk on the phone every night. Two years into the relationship, I knew the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-in-together-relationship-dynamic-change-2024-4">next step was to move in together</a>.I wanted to live in Tristan Da Cunha. It helped that it wasn't completely abnormal for me to just pick up and move somewhere because I've been doing it all my life.So, in late 2013, I packed my belongings and moved there. I've found that people will always look out for you.The<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/private-island-for-sale-in-canada-reachable-by-boat-helicopter-2024-9"> island is self-sufficient</a>, thanks to its farming and fishing community. Lobster is exported worldwide and provides the island's biggest source of income. The islanders also grow their own produce and rear cows, sheep, chickens, and ducks.<h2 id="8e3fbdaa-655a-48e0-946c-e214a51f779d">I love the freedom</h2>I walk three to four miles every afternoon and don't bump into anyone. It's so peaceful and quiet, and completely different from my life in England.Back in England, I used to get up at 2 a.m., commute over an hour to Gatwick Airport, and work 16-hour shifts. Here, to get to work, it takes me two minutes to walk to the tourism office, where I work as the head of tourism. We don't get many tourists, but the population can quadruple during the cruise season. There are around 900 tourists a year — though this can vary substantially.Although it didn't bother me that I would leave city life behind, there are some aspects that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-american-misses-after-moving-back-from-uk-2022-11">I miss about England</a>. In England, you can just go to the shop and get a premade meal. You can't do that here. If you want a burger, you have to grind the meat up and make the rolls. It's just a completely different lifestyle.Imported goods are also more expensive. Anything from South Africa has around a 75% markup on the original price, and anything from the UK has around a 95% markup. For example, I've just ordered myself a fridge. It cost around $650, but I had to pay $1,100 for it because of freight.Still, I feel more at home here than I ever did in England. I would never dream of letting a young kid walk alone in England. But here, I don't have to worry. There's always someone looking out for them or telling them off if they're being naughty. Even with my son, he can just be out in the garden, and I can be in the house.In the future, I'll encourage my kids to study abroad and experience life in other countries. Just because I decided to live on Tristan Da Cunha doesn't mean they have to live here forever.There is a lot of the world out there for them to see. I've been lucky to explore it, and I want them to have that experience, too.

Business Insider has verified the sale of the property with documentation. The following has been edited for length and clarity.I had a dream to create a village of Nordic-inspired cabins in the heart of Texas.I found a five-acre parcel of land in Waco on Zillow, just a few miles from my home. In March 2021, I purchased the land using a short-term loan and personal savings for $138,000.In nine and a half months, I managed the design and construction of a seven-unit <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starting-successful-tiny-house-airbnb-business-tips-2023-1">micro-resort</a> with an immersive natural setting. I financed the build with a construction loan from a local community bank and through raising equity from friends and family. It cost $2.5 million to build, including a container pool and hot tubs, which we added later on.We launched in January 2022. A travel influencer who marketed the resort on Instagram helped us go viral and generate a huge number of bookings. It was like an instant goldmine.We went all in on Instagram, growing the brand through creating content and partnering with influencers. Some of our early guests became superfans, coming back multiple times a year and bringing others with them. In our first 12 months of being open, we brought in $860,000 in bookings.The entire time we operated the business, I kept in mind that if someone came and offered the right price and terms, I'd consider selling it. I believe that every material possession should have a price tag attached to it.I sold the property, called <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiny-house-airbnb-hotel-waco-texas-see-inside-2022-10">Live Oak Lake</a>, for $7 million in October 2023. I learned a lot about securing a deal, including the value of having a good broker and attorneys.<h2 id="25fde6b5-f457-43bf-be94-6ce8e4254041">The uniqueness of the property helped us get a good price on the sale</h2>Live Oak Lake was like my baby. I built it from the ground up.The first three months after we opened were challenging. I was learning how to integrate <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/real-estate-passive-income-hospitality-short-term-rental-airbnb-2024-10">property management software</a>, and my wife was doing the cleaning. We hired a part-time cleaning and guest communications manager and a part-time operations manager, who then ran the property after the first few months.I was then spending around five to 10 hours a week on the business, mostly doing marketing. Because you're open for business 24/7 in hospitality, some of those hours were late at night when guests were arriving late. I was doing personal branding and coaching alongside the hotel. My wife and I also did mission work with our church.Part of the reason I considered selling Live Oak Lake was because of the stress of running it. Even though I automated elements for efficiency, in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hiring-jobs-restaurants-hotels-leisure-hospitality-healthcare-government-2024-7">hospitality</a>, the guest experience is paramount. I was focused on blowing guests away and wanted to look at every single review. It was hard to unplug from the business.We listed Live Oak Lake for sale in the summer of 2022. Several parties were interested, but we felt the property was worth more. We removed that listing and raised the price by $1 million when we next listed in January 2023.A broker who specialized in outdoor hospitality reached out and helped me from there. When we relisted the property, the broker helped vet the interested parties.We were about to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-sales-tips-for-closing-deals-faster-2016-5">close on a deal</a> for $6.5 million, but the buyers backed out the day before we were set to close. It was an emotional roller coaster.A few days later, we received another offer for $7 million from a private group of investors, which we were able to close on. The property is being run similarly to before, and some of my friends who I hired to manage things on the ground still work there.I think the uniqueness and novelty of the property, the audience we built, and the quality of the hospitality we offered helped us sell for that price.We weren't in a hurry to sell, but $7 million was a lot of money. Plus, I hit it off with the buyer and liked their vision. I felt they understood what made us special, like our social media following, direct bookings, and unique experience.<h2 id="c7a0c906-c322-4402-99d2-bf69962ff44c">I learned a valuable lesson about selling a property</h2>One thing I learned from the selling process was the importance of having good attorneys and a great <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/mortgages/how-to-find-real-estate-agent">broker</a>.Our broker was local, which was a huge help. There were a lot of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/mortgages/home-inspection">property inspections</a> and meetings with prospective buyers. He could help with those things without me having to drop everything.He alleviated my emotional volatility and attachment to the property because I didn't have to be involved in every interaction. I'm a very detail-oriented person who likes to micromanage things. I needed to trust other people, like my attorneys and the broker, who could take my hands off of the selling process. I'd highly recommend getting a broker to anyone <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/homebuilders-new-construction-rental-homes-investors-price-cuts-mortgage-rates-2024-11">selling a property</a>.<h2 id="f9154a67-a1d5-4e4c-a88c-c48ff6eebfa6">Selling the property has alleviated my stress</h2>I think I sold Live Oak Lake at the right time. I held the property just long enough to gain thorough experience operating a micro-resort and build it to a point where it was really valuable.Selling has alleviated stress in my life. I have an office and art studio in my backyard, where I can now work on other ventures as and when I want. I consult with other micro-resort developers, which is how I'm funding my lifestyle now.I think I would own and operate another project, but I'd want to hire a full-time manager that I could train to manage our operations.The Live Oak Lake project was an amazing project, a baptism by fire in the realms of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/tips-real-estate-investing-expert-get-started-2024-2">real estate</a>, marketing, and hospitality.
