Most users have probably seen the same design on the OnePlus 6T. But, the Honor 10 Lite only costs between ₹13,999 to ₹17,999. The Honor 10 Lite is the latest in phones that offer a ‘flagship’ experience at a mid-range price. The phone is going up against the Nokia6, Poco F1, Asus Max Pro M2, and the RealMe2 Pro striving to be an ‘affordable flagship’. The phone also has 13-megapixel and 2-megapixel rear dual cameras while retaining the manual mode for shooting that gives photography enthusiasts control over the specifics. The ‘Lite’ version of Honor 10 is literally light weighing only 162 grams. But that’s mostly because the glass back and metal frame on the Honor 10 have been replaced with a plastic body on the Honor 10 Lite. The phone has a 4GB RAM and 64GB storage option as well as a 6GB RAM and 64GB storage variant. The Honor 10 Lite will be available to buy starting January 20, 2019 exclusively via Flipkart or from their official website. So then, where’s the catch? The ‘Lite’ version of the Honor 10 is meant to easier on the pocket without losing the bang of its 24-megapixel front facing camera. The phone has a 6.1-inch screen, Full-HD Plus resolution display, runs on EMUI 9 based on Android 9.0 Pie and has both 3GB and 6GB RAM options. But, since it is the ‘Lite’ version of the Honor 10 phone, there are a few cutbacks. The most obvious one is that the phone runs on the Kirin 710 chipset rather than the Kirin 970 — the ‘high-end’ octa-core system on a chip (SoC) that was introduced on the <keyword id="6357456" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="huawei">Huawei</keyword> Mate 10. It’s essentially a mid-range phone that has mid-range power, which is fair enough. For the user, that basically means that apps might open a little slower and there maybe a few issues when you’re trying to play heavy-duty games. In a way it’s good news because the less power means it won’t eat away at the 3,400mAh battery as quickly. But the battery size is underwhelming since competitors like Xiaomi and ASUS are launching phones with 4,000mAh and 5,000mAh batteries. Also, the phone has a micro-USB charger instead of a type-C port. The former maybe okay for entry-level phones but the type-C port has been around long enough for mid-range phones to level up their game. That being said, the Honor 10 Lite will have the GPU Turbo software. So ideally, at least while gaming, performance and battery life will geared towards keeping your phone as fluid as possible. But unlike the Honor 10, there’s no 128GB storage option. Although, depending on your usage, that shouldn’t be too much of an issue for the average user.

brother, the Redmi Note 7 Pro but it packs its fair share in the camera department nonetheless. The phones 12MP primary camera in the back is able to capture adequate detail and its reproduction of colors is accurate. The only issue is that when it comes to shooting against the light, the camera’s ability to handle exposure is a little lacking. The depth sensor, despite being only 2MP, does a good job of capturing portrait shots with clear edges and the appropriate amount of blur. In low light, the images weren’t perfect, but in comparison to its competition on the list — Redmi Note 7’s images were a little less noisy. The front camera also works well and doesn’t over do the AI-enabled beautification effect. All in all, you get a decent set of cameras for under ₹ 10,000. Samsung Galaxy M10 ₹ 7,990 The Samsung Galaxy M10 has a few drawbacks like bad reviews of its battery life and screen brightness, but the phone’s camera is not one of them. The phone’s ultra wide angle lens a rare find in this price range and clicks pictures that are ideal for sharing on social media. It camera’s interface has features like the beauty mode, stickers and panorama. The Samsung Galaxy M10 also has ‘bokeh’ or portrait mode that they have called ‘live focus’. Daylight shots come out clear and since its a budget phone, Samsung’s over saturation actually works in the phone’s favour. It’s low-light performance is at par with the competition, which is to say that your shots will still come out grainy and the wide angle lens’ barrel effect will be defined at night. Huawei Honor 9 Lite ₹ 7,999 A good <keyword id="1507072" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="smartphone-camera">smartphone camera</keyword> is hard to come by in a budget phone, it’s even more rare to see one under ₹ 10,000 that has four cameras on board — two in front and two in the back. It’s a bit underwhelming that the secondary sensors on both cameras are only 2MP. The rear camera’s autofocus works fast and daylight photos come out fairly well. When it comes to low light shots, the Huawei Honor 9 Lite suffers from the same symptoms are the other phones on this list where the edges start to disappear and details start to blur. The phone’s camera app also has a neat little feature where you can enable it to take pictures automatically when it detects a smile. The front camera, on the other hand, performs better than the competition. Well-lit shots come out natural and even low light pictures are able to capture a fair bit of detail. Huawei Honor 9N ₹ 8,999 Huawei phones may not get the next Google update in a timely manner but the Honor 9N is still the best selfie camera phone that you can buy for under ₹ 10,000. The 16MP front facing sensor is the highest resolution available in this budget on a phone that isn’t so bad overall either. The front camera is at par with the Honor 9N’s rear camera with color reproduction and contrast that’s accurate. But in low light conditions, both the front and rear camera, produce images that are a little noisy. Although, for lone picture, you can activate the phone’s simulated flash that uses the screen to lend a little extra light to a selfie. For images from the rear camera, however, there are limited solutions. Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro ₹ 8,999 The Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro may not be the newest phone on the block but it remains one of the best if you’re looking for a decent camera phone under ₹ 10,000. Daylight shots come out well using the 12MP primary camera and the 5MP depth sensor creates sharable portrait shots. It’s only in low light conditions that the camera falters and the image details come out with what is called the ‘watercolour’ effect. You could try shooting in HDR to capture a little more detail, but you’ll exceptionally steady hands for the picture to come out well. The same issue carries forward to the front camera as well where, under well lit conditions, selfies come out nicely but the night shots lack the same consistency.

Let’s take a trip back in time to 2014. Top end premier phones like the iPhone 6 and the Galaxy Note 4 are all the rage, with Google still cluttering up the <keyword id="28168" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Smartphone">smartphone</keyword> race with the Nexus 6. We can safely say that the smartphone market was more than crowded at this point but this isn’t a story about the best phones of that year instead we are going to focus on one phone that paved the way for design compared to others at this price point - <keyword id="6357456" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="huawei">Huawei</keyword> <keyword id="461983" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="honor">Honor</keyword> 6. The design of the Honor 6 In 2013, Huawei established a new brand, one that was conceived to help compete with other phones in the budget segment. The challenge for the company was to do this while maintaining a style statement that was unique to it. The Honor 6 may have looked like a iPhone 4S clone but at Rs. 20,000 in 2014, there was really no other phone that matched it in terms of design. Sure, the rounded edges and the camera placement near the top left at the back had been done to death at this point but the Honor series captured that look and feel reserved for the high end premium segment and bought it to a mid-range device. It made looking at a budget phone with good design, a viable criteria. The larger variant of the phone, the Honor 6 Plus took even more cues from premium design, offering smooth gentle curves and a nice glass back with a metal trim around the edge. The best part? Consumers only needed to pay a few thousand extra for the upgrade. It kicked off Huawei’s mission statement in style and helped establish it as a design leader in the budget segment. The refinements of the Honor 7 If the Honor 6 was successful in establishing a style for the budget conscious, Honor 7, the company’s 2015 follow-up refined it and sandpapered it down to a sheen. It took cues from Honor 6’s inviting design and made it more appealing. It was sleeker, felt more compact in the hand and oozed premiumness despite it being a Rs. 23,000 phone. The move to brushed aluminum on the back meant it was nicer to hold, while the smooth metal trims and rounded edges ensured it didn’t dig into your hand. The front in comparison, looked a little basic but it was Huawei’s attempt at reducing the bezels on the side that made the screen stand out that much more. The basic facade also ensured that the screen was always front and center, with nothing to distract you from enjoying your content. Honor 8’s bold new direction While the design of the Honor 6 and 7 were lauded and considered the best among the budget segment, Huawei opted to completely redo it once more for the Honor 8. Switching back to glass for the back felt more natural and the metal frame around the structure was more refined. The unique pattern on the back created by reflections on the glass made the phone look absolutely premium something way above the Rs. 30,000 price bracket it was sold at. It was the natural evolution of the design from the Honor 6 and 7, made more appealing and importantly, more stylish. A year later Huawei returned with the Honor 8 Pro, the most stunning honor phone conceived yet. The switch to an all metal unibody allowed it to achieve a distractingly minimalist design language. With edges being rounder than they had ever been and the phone gaining a lot of durability as a result of the shift to unibody aesthetics. The front once again put the stunning display front and center, with minimal bezels on the sides. The Honor 9: A bubblier more colorful Honor 8 If you thought the bezels around the Honor 8 was slim, The Honor 9 slimmed it down even further with only minimal concessions for hardware at the top and bottom. They also introduced 2.5D curved glass for the back and the front which smoothly segued into the rounded edges, making it feel absolutely wonderful in the hands. The 9N refined this further reducing the bezels on the front to a singular notch and giving consumers more choices in various attractive colors. After a brief stint with metal aesthetics for the Honor 8 Pro, the smooth mirror back returns and looks as vibrant and feels as premium as ever. The combination of this 2.5D glass at the back with 8 Pro’s more subdued industrial design language produces an odd hybrid, one that successfully captures what makes both the phones unique. And it wasn’t just the Honor 9N, Huawei also saw it fit to release another iteration of the phone here, in fact releasing it before the 9N. It’s called the Honor 9 Lite and it consolidates the strengths of the design even further. Combined both these phones were among ‘Notch’ heavy phones to fall under the Rs. 15,000 price bracket, an unbeatable price for aesthetics like these. It democratised a premium feature like the notch that was relegated behind a steep paywall previously and bought it to the budget segment. The Honor 10: The logical conclusion to what started with the Honor 6 The Honor 10 not only serves as a logical conclusion to what started with the Honor 6 in terms of design but also efficiently boxes up everything the company has learned through the years with Honor, in a neat package for the consumer. The front of the phone has an even smaller notch than the 9 series and the back looks as attractive as ever. The screen now has an 86.2% screen to body ratio, which makes a taller phone feel more compact and sturdy in the hands. The quality of the polished 2.5D curved glass used on the phone has also been raised dramatically and looks more premium than ever. Don’t like the notch? Well...Huawei has thought of that as well, with an option to mask it using software. The rounded edges feel even more smoother and the glass back is truly a treat to behold. The best thing about the phone? It still maintains a price lower than Rs. 35,000, can’t get any better than that. 10’s design is a jumping point for the future for Huawei and we can’t wait to see where the company goes next.
