<ul class="summary-list"><li>"<keyword id="29858" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Legally-Blonde">Legally Blonde</keyword>," released 20 years ago in July, holds up well in regards to its feminist themes.</li><li>But like many films of that time, it falls short on diverse <keyword id="581888" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="representation">representation</keyword>.</li><li>The beloved <keyword id="6356021" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="movie">movie</keyword>'s only characters of color are either underdeveloped or straight-up offensive.</li></ul><a href="https://www.insider.com/what-legally-blonde-got-right-about-law-school-2019-2">"Legally Blonde"</a> is filled with valuable lessons.The beloved film, starring <keyword id="17580" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Reese-Witherspoon">Reese Witherspoon</keyword>, taught viewers everything from proper perm maintenance and the ideal "bend and snap" technique to embracing feminism and believing in yourself no matter who tries to put you down. It's also, incidentally, a hilarious and endlessly quotable movie.But as well as it holds up in many regards, particularly when it comes to its feminist themes, the 2001 film isn't perfect.We need to talk about how poorly it handles its characters of color.Insider revisited the few non-white characters who appear in the film and spoke to Greg Serano, who played pool-boy Enrique, about his experience playing one of the only characters of color in the iconic movie.<h2>Elle Woods has been praised as a feminist icon, and I wholeheartedly adore her for that</h2>Within minutes of the film's start, Elle is awkwardly dumped by her boyfriend Warner (Matthew Davis) at a crowded restaurant, just as she thinks he's about to propose.From that moment, she's determined to secure a spot at Harvard Law School alongside Warner so she can win him back - and so begins her feminist journey.We see Elle find her self worth outside of the man she expected to marry as she becomes a shrewd litigator and realizes that she actually does deeply care about her new vocation.<div type="image" title="legally blonde elle 4" height="1231" width="1642" msid="85335348" hostid="261"></div>While Elle is frequently praised as a <a href="https://www.harpersbazaar.com/uk/culture/a21284894/5-ways-legally-blondes-elle-woods-is-a-feminist-hero-for-2018/">feminist icon who fought stereotypes and sexual harassment</a> to prove she is a competent lawyer, <a href="https://www.insider.com/legally-blonde-ali-larter-film-secrets-screenwriters-interview-2021-6">Insider's senior entertainment reporter Olivia Singh</a> previously wrote that Elle isn't an obviously likable protagonist.Elle, who comes from a wealthy family, has a taste for designer labels and fancy cars. But it's hard to look at her and only see her privilege when Elle also brings joy to those around her and is kind to everyone she meets.She quickly jumps in to defend her new friend, Jennifer Coolidge's Paulette Bonafonté Parcel, in a dog-custody battle with a terrible former partner, and she's fiercely protective of Brooke's alibi in the murder trial (as a fellow thin white woman, Elle is well aware of how bad it would be for fitness icon Brooke's liposuction secret to get out)."The pretty, wealthy, popular girl is not usually the underdog," screenwriter Karen McCullah told Singh about writing Elle's character. "We flipped it and the humanity of the character because she was so kind to everyone and so optimistic and unfazed."As impressive as it is that the film's creators made Elle into an unlikely feminist hero, they unfortunately didn't put in as much work (or really any work at all) into its characters of color.<div type="image" title="Ali Larter in a courtroom in &quot;Legally Blonde.&quot;" height="1221" width="1629" msid="85335349" hostid="261"></div><h2>'Legally Blonde's' <keyword id="61889" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Diversity">diversity</keyword> issues are cringeworthy in retrospect, but Serano, who played Enrique, told Insider it wasn't 'even a realization'</h2>The movie, as fun as it is, has an extremely white cast. Almost all the characters in Elle's social circles in California and at Harvard are white. One exception is her friend Serena, played by actress Alanna Ubach, who is of <a href="https://www.popsugar.com/latina/photo-gallery/42815492/image/43614450/You-might-remember-Alanna-Ubach-Elle-Woods-sidekick-Legally">Mexican and Puerto Rican descent</a> and <a href="https://hiplatina.com/alanna-ubach-pixars-coco/">best-known for voicing Mamá Imelda</a> in Pixar's "Coco," though Serena largely disappears in the middle of the movie when Elle is fully immersed into the Harvard Law experience.The most notable characters of color are one-dimensional: the judge (Francesca P. Roberts) presiding over the film's climactic murder trial and pool-boy Enrique Salvatore (Serano), who is one of the witnesses.The judge, who's barely in the film at all, has few lines that are mostly reactions to Elle's antics. Enrique, on the other hand, is far more memorable - in part because he's a caricature of a gay Latino man.During the trial, Enrique claims that he's having an affair with Brooke, implying that the socialite might have murdered her older husband to be with her lover. Minutes later, Elle clicks her Prada heels and proves that the pool boy is gay and has made the whole thing up to make Brooke look guilty. Before Emmett, tipped off by Elle, proves that Enrique is lying by tricking him into outing himself as gay on the stand (also not great!), the pool boy delivers arguably one of the most recognizable lines from the movie: "Don't stomp your little last season Prada shoes at me, honey."<div type="image" title="legally blonde outfits" height="705" width="940" msid="85335350" hostid="261"></div> Other writers, such as Huffington Post's Cole Delbyck, <a href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/how-legally-blonde-hinged-on-one-lazy-gay-stereotype_n_577d6699e4b0c590f7e7d2d0">have criticized the film in the past</a> for making Enrique a "blatantly problematic representation of a gay man." But there's also an uncomfortably racist element to Enrique's portrayal as the "sassy Latinx" stereotype.Enrique wears a sparkly green shirt with a Virgin Mary depicted on the back, speaks with an exaggerated accent, and leaves Cher CDs in the pool house, all before his disturbing public outing.Despite these issues, Serano, told Insider back in June that he fondly remembers his time filming the movie and playing Enrique.Serano added that he couldn't recall if the lack of diversity in the film was "even a realization" for him while filming "Legally Blonde" over 20 years ago. After all, he had no idea that he was playing one of only several characters of color with speaking roles."As an actor, you're only on set for your scenes," Serano told Insider about his experience. "You really don't know who else is in the film or even the script. Many movies released in the late '90s and early '00s (like "10 Things I Hate About You" and "Freaky Friday") failed to feature a diverse, or even a not-exclusively-white, cast.While <a href="https://www.indiewire.com/2020/12/2020-diversity-in-film-tv-1234606659/">Hollywood has made a far bigger push for diversity in recent years</a> (both onscreen and <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/newsbeat-56860578">behind-the-scenes</a>), many of the defining movies of the past few decades missed that boat. It's especially noticeable with "Legally Blonde" because the 2001 movie gets so many other lessons right and was remarkably far ahead of its time in some ways<a href="https://www.vox.com/2016/7/13/12160462/legally-blonde-feminist-romance"></a>.But there's still hope for Elle to become a champion of diversity yet."Legally Blonde 2," released two years after the first movie, had a slightly more diverse cast. Oscar winner Regina King played Grace, a Congressional aide in Washington, DC, and Elle's workplace-nemesis-turned-ally, as the Harvard graduate tries to pass a bill in the House of Representatives, outlawing animal testing for makeup products. A third "Legally Blonde" movie, where Witherspoon is set to reprise her role as Elle, <a href="https://www.insider.com/legally-blonde-3-reese-witherspoon-details-information-what-we-know">is set for May 2022</a>. Mindy Kaling will join Witherspoon as a producer, with the former telling<a href="https://deadline.com/2021/01/mindy-kaling-legally-blonde-3-update-reese-witherspoon-1234670847/"> Deadline</a> that the new film will "definitely have a lot of fan favorites" returning. When asked about what her vision is for the upcoming "Legally Blonde" movie, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqBwrqjlby4">Witherspoon told The Hollywood Reporter in December 2019</a> that the new sequel will be "global," while also highlighting "awesome feminist ideas" like the first movie in the series. "That's my hope and dream for '<keyword id="3114513" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="legally-blonde-3">Legally Blonde 3</keyword>,'" Witherspoon said.Elle ends the first movie by stressing <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_FKP-rjhh4">the importance of having faith in other people and in yourself</a> - and I have faith that Witherspoon knows her "global" vision for the upcoming "Legally Blonde" sequel must include better representation and characters of color.

Yes, 'Legally Blonde' is a feminist masterpiece. But we need to talk about how badly it handles its characters of color.

The import ban on defence items announced by India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh could be a boon for Indian IT companies looking to explore new horizons. Today warfare is fought not just on the ground but also on the virtual battlefield. The US, Russia, and China are leading the world when it comes to cyber technology. India, though not staggeringly behind, is playing catch up. “This offers opportunities for Indian IT companies such as Tech Mahindra, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Wipro, and HCL Technologies, which have so far played a restricted role in the Indian military’s technological modernisation,” said Sameer Patil, a fellow at Mumbai-based thinktank Gateway House. Why is cyber technology in defence so important? It’s inevitable to deny the role of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), swarming drones, blockchain, and quantum computing, among other things when it comes to future-proofing the military. Even when a war is being fought on the ground, navigation satellites are doing half the work. When it comes to aircraft, data analysis by the digital modules on board is crucial for efficiency. Using Internet-of-Things (IoT) can boost the manufacturing of defence items. In addition to this, cyber technology plays a critical role in defending against advanced cyber threats, like deep fakes and social engineering attacks — like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/apps/news/tinder-bumble-and-ok-cupid-banned-by-indian-army-to-keep-soldiers-from-being-honey-trapped/articleshow/76866610.cms">honey trapping Indian soldiers.</a> Having better defences will keep data from getting weaponised against India. IBM, for instance, provides the <a href="https://www.ibm.com/industries/federal/national-security">US government</a> with defence and national security solutions, which include military readiness and intelligence analysis. Where do Indian IT companies come in? The finer points of using IT in warfare can only be grasped through government-military-industry collaboration, according to Patil. “These companies can help the military better identify global technological trends,” he said. Indian IT companies can also help identify critical technologies, especially those that may be denied to India as part of the International Strategic Export Controls regime — which includes restrictions on electronics, computers, and IT encompassing information security. Some may argue that Tata Advanced Systems and other players are already active in the area. But none deal with data. TAS’ role thus far has primarily been on aeronautics and more recently on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones. “The private sector has already established a certain degree of competency in cyber and has the necessary foreign tie-ups,” said Patil explaining the advantages of Indian IT companies. For instance, Tech Mahindra already has a partnership going with Israel’s Elta Systems to create cyber security-based products. Given the rate at which technology is changing by the day, India has historically lagged when it comes to next-generation weaponry. That's because fiber is not easily digested by the human intestine, which in most cases is beneficial - it can add bulk to your stool, thereby easing constipation. However, when healthy gut bacteria digest fiber they produce gas as a byproduct. And if there is excess fiber, there can be excess gas. That's why beans, which are very fiber-rich, are notorious for causing flatulence. Farhadi says you can also try over-the-counter products that will relieve gas and bloating such as <a href="https://www.gas-x.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gas-X</a> or <a href="https://www.gaviscon.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gaviscon</a>. Alternatively, you could try taking <a href="https://www.beanogas.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Beano</a> before you eat, which has enzymes that can help you break down hard-to-digest foods and possibly prevent gas before it starts.<h2>3. A 2017 <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5622700/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">review</a> found similar results, but more studies are needed to understand any potential adverse effects of consuming a low-FODMAP diet long-term.<h2>4. Swallowing air</h2>Swallowing air is a natural part of eating and drinking. Amidst these conversations and also mounting tensions between China and India, the government of India on Monday announced the ban of around 59 Chinese apps. These apps include popular video-sharing social networking platform TikTok, WeChat, UC Browser, SHAREit, Baidu Map, Shein, Helo and Likee, amongst others. The government, in its official announcement said, “The Ministry of Information Technology, invoking it’s power under section 69A of the Information Technology Act read with the relevant provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009 and in view of the emergent nature of threats has decided to block 59 apps ( see Appendix) since in view of information available they are engaged in activities which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order.” Hours after the announcement was made, TikTok India’s head <keyword id="47432" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nikhil-Gandhi">Nikhil Gandhi</keyword> released a statement.It read, “The Government of India has issued an interim order for the blocking of 59 apps, including TikTok and we are in the process of complying with it. We have been invited to meet with concerned government stakeholders for an opportunity to respond and submit clarifications. TikTok continues to comply with all data privacy and security requirements under Indian law and have not shared any information of our users in India with any foreign government, including the Chinese Government. Further if we are requested to in the future we would not do so. We place the highest importance on user privacy and integrity. TikTok has democratized the internet by making it available in 14 Indian languages, with hundreds of millions of users, artists, story-tellers, educators and performers depending on it for their livelihood, many of whom are first time internet users.” TikTok enjoys a huge following in India and has a dedicated fan base as well as innumerable users who have become influencers on the platform. India accounts for a huge chuck of TikTok’s global installs. According to estimates by Sensor Tower, when TikTok crossed 2 billion global downloads, India was at the forefront of this growth. The country accounted for 611 million lifetime downloads or 30.3% of the total. This opened up the opportunities for both content creators and brands who started looking at the platform as an effective way of reaching out to audiences. We saw quite a few brands come up with innovative campaigns on the platform. TikTok has also been strengthening its offerings for advertisers. However, this ban will put a lot of things on hold. We wanted to understand the impact of this ban on the influencer community and reached out to a few experts. But if it lasts for a few months it certainly is going to have a big effect on the curated video space, YouTube for sure will be the big gainer as well as Indian apps on the space. Ashutosh, CEO and Co-founder, Buzzoka The ban on Tik-Tok definitely calls for brands to rethink their influencer marketing strategies. Undeniably, the platform saw a spike in interest in the recent past however it must be noted that it formed only a part of brands' influencer marketing spend. On the contrary, mature platforms like Instagram and YouTube have always had an edge over the former. As a result, the impact of its ban will be lesser on brands and more on the content creators who were only present on Tik-Tok. I believe there's always a silver lining. Disruption will take place in the market. There is no dearth of platforms hence, brands will increasingly turn to them to reach similar audiences. Similarly, influencers will be able to make new identities on other platforms as far as they are good and confident about their content creation. Moreover, this will create new avenues in the ecosystem for emerging Indian platforms like Mitron and Chingari and will encourage them to invest more in enhancing their respective platforms and see rapid growth from here. Premkumar Iyer, National Operations Head, Gozoop This ban is a very big move for Indian M&amp;A. It will be interesting to see how the whole ban eventually plays out. Of all the apps banned, TikTok ranks highest on potential due to its hinterland dominance, which led brands to make investments on the platform, both in terms of time and money. Brands will probably press pause and see how this culminates before attempting any major course correction. However, the real game here is for the influencers who have built strong communities on the platform. We are witnessing a shift as most are moving towards Instagram as it is natively closest to what TikTok enabled for these creators. Cross promoting communities have always been the norm for influencers and since the ban was announced creators have started posting content asking their community to follow them on Instagram and YouTube so that if the ban continues fans can still watch their content. What's going to make this even more interesting is if Instagram's Reels and Facebook's Lasso short video format app launches in India as the timing could not be better.I think for most it is going to be like JayZ says “On to the Next One”. Harikrishnan Pillai, CEO and Co-founder, TheSmallBigIdea Digital platforms across the world are facing tremendous pressure from governments and advertisers to bring in more data transparency and content filtering. This move is led by public outrage and both, the government and brands are quite conscious of their imagery basis their stance. The 150+ brand boycott of Facebook or the Chinese platform bans are clear indicators of this phenomenon. The question is what does it mean to the advertisers, agencies and platforms. In a short to medium term, advertisers and agencies will look at alternate platforms to help them meet their marketing goals. Some of the banned platforms are sizeable, so it would be difficult to find an immediate apparent replacement. In this case, a combination of replacements or an increase in presence in existing platforms can be an option. Also, the ban is still a little unclear from an implementation standpoint. The downloaded apps are still running, though new downloads are at a halt. If the government calls for a complete ban, things will go south for these platforms. Even then, I don't believe brands will advertise on these apps, fearing public outrage. For influencers, from a short term POV, the business will be affected if they have had a single platform focus. From a long term perspective, Indian apps have a great opportunity to grow. ‘Revenge Download' will lead to a sudden spike of Indian apps. Whether they manage to be sticky and effective, time will tell. <keyword id="7372416" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Viraj-Sheth">Viraj Sheth</keyword>, Co-founder and CEO, <keyword id="9491005" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="monk-entertainment">Monk Entertainment</keyword> The TikTok ban, if it stays for perpetuity, will prove to be a big dent in the life of many young and budding influencers. TikTok has given rise to an incredible number of influencers who rose to stardom through the platform and earned their bread and butter due to the audience earned from the app. While most of the established TikTokers will see a dip in their branded content earnings because of this ban for a few months, they've been smart enough to build their audiences on platforms like Instagram &amp; YouTube. When brands divert their spends from TikTok to other platforms, this ban will not affect their earnings over a period of time. TikTok had been a huge catalyst in enabling talent from the farthest nooks and corners of India. The ban will leave a gap in the market for Indian short video platforms to come through and make their mark. I hope they make their moves right. Neel Gogia, Co founder, IPLIX Media This step will impact thousands of Tiktok influencers who are dependent on brands for their survival. Brands will be impacted as well. They have already started reaching out to us to understand how they can realign their strategies to reach similar audiences. It will be interesting to see how influencers and brands change their strategies to adapt to the other platforms. We feel in 5-6 months influencers can build their audience in these platforms (if they create relevant content). Ankit Agarwal, Founder, Do Your Thng The ban is more of a statement right now - a comma rather than a full stop. That’s evident from the clarification updated by TikTok India. If, and that’s a big if, the block becomes permanent, it has the potential to change the influencer landscape significantly. Right now, for marketers, TikTok is the space to target Gen Zers as 41% of its users fall in this age bracket. I feel it is one reason why brand custodians place it in the top 3 three platforms for influencer marketing [Instagram (94%), TikTok (52%) and YouTube (52%)]. On top of it, the app has higher engagement rates and average time spent per day than Instagram. When you take away something so effective, brands are bound to feel the pinch. To compensate, they’ll redirect their influencer marketing efforts to other platforms – trigger the said change. On the creator side, the impact will be more substantial and devastating. As Nikhil Gandhi correctly points out, TikTok gave a voice to hundreds of creators generating vernacular content in India. While most creators are savvy enough to diversify to other platforms, there will be few who stand to lose their entire body of work. But all this is contingent on a permanent block, which in my opinion will most probably not happen. Not just because TikTok has been given a chance to submit clarifications, but because executing a ban is not simple with plenty of workarounds available. Honey Singh, CEO &amp; Co-Founder, #ARM Worldwide Content creators have already started nurturing their other platforms like Instagram and Youtube. After this ban, I feel there will be a significant spike on Instagram. These content creators will also face monetary losses since brands have already started pausing their planned TikTok activities for now. At the moment, we are already in touch with many content creators and figuring out how to finish ongoing campaigns. Lastly, this ban will also allow these content creators to think about building a uniform fan following. Post anti-China sentiments have already started depleting the wallets of influencers. After the ban, all the scheduled campaigns from the brands are on pause until further clarity from the government. Creators having large followings on other channels like Instagram/Youtube may recover, but there will be a significant loss for them. The silver lining is that content creators should realize that nothing is permanent. They should start working on an omnichannel presence.
