New Delhi, Japanese auto major Honda is all set to introduce its India-made mid-sized SUV Elevate in the <keyword id="859755" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="japanese-market" source="Orion">Japanese market</keyword> next year. It would be the first instance that a product manufactured by <keyword id="1381889" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="honda-cars-india" source="Orion">Honda Cars India</keyword> Ltd (HCIL), a wholly-owned unit of the Japanese firm, will be exported to the highly regulated Japanese market. <br /><br /> HCIL is rolling out Elevate from its Tapukara (Rajasthan-based) production facility. <br /><br /> "After its successful debut in India earlier this year, Elevate is scheduled for Spring 2024 launch in the Japanese market under the brand name WR-V," an HCIL spokesperson said in a statement. <br /><br /> In a first for HCIL, the model will be manufactured in India and exported to Japan, it added. <br /><br /> "This strategic move is a strong reflection of manufacturing capabilities of India operations and also solidifies our vision of making the country a key export hub in Honda business," the spokesperson said. <br /><br /> The company's Tapukara-based plant is fully equipped to take care of the domestic as well as export requirements, the spokesperson added. <br /><br /> HCIL introduced Elevate in the domestic market in September this year. <br /><br /> Starting with the model, the company aims to introduce five SUV models in the domestic market by 2030. <br /><br /> The company also plans to bring a battery-electric version of Elevate within the next three years. <br /><br /> The model is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a six-speed manual and a seven-speed continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Made-in-India Honda Elevate to debut in Japan next year

<br /> As the Financial year 2014 comes to a close, Japanese auto maker Honda has announced some key changes in the top management. As reported by The Economic Times, Katsushi Inoue will takeover as the <keyword id="665726" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="President-CEO">president &amp; CEO</keyword> from April.<br />

The company said, "Inoue has been associated with Honda Motor Co for over 29 years and has served as General Manager in Marketing Planning office in Japan headquarters in his last assignment." <br />
<br /> He has worked with Honda ventures in different markets across the globe including Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, the UK, Poland and <keyword id="87" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Germany">Germany</keyword>. <br />

As part of the reshuffling process, Hiroyuki Shimizu will be the new senior vice president &amp; director, marketing &amp; sales, in Honda Cars India (HCIL), the company's wholly-owned subsidiary. <br />
<br /> Also, Yoshiyuki Matsumoto, managing officer, <keyword id="191593" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Honda-Motor-Co-">Honda Motor Co.</keyword>, who was the representative of development, purchasing and production in Asia and Oceania since April 2013 and was stationed in India, moves to Japan after completing his tenure, HCIL said in a statement. <br />

"He will take over as the chief operating officer of the Automobile Operation at Honda Motor Co. He is planned to be elevated to the position of director on the Board of Directors in Honda Motor Co with the title of Senior Managing Officer and Director after approval at the General Meeting of Shareholders of the company scheduled to be held in June 2015," according to the ET. <br />

Prior to Katsushi Inoue, Hironori Kanayama was the president &amp; CEO of Honda. During the three years of Kanayama's leadership in India, HCIL has witnessed rapid growth in its business. Honda Amaze, Honda Mobilio and 4th generation Honda City were launched in the Indian market during this period, which subsequently helped Honda to pull itself up and slash down it losses by more than 50%.<br />

<p>Analysts are predicting an annualized rate of 16.9 million units.</p>
<p>"Sales jumped 4.5% to 17.1 million units annualized in November, second highest since 2006 after 17.4 in August, helped by successful Black Friday promotions," Morgan Stanley's Ted Wieseman said. "Black Friday weekend has become a big deal for the industry the past couple years after auto dealers previously hadn't generally been active participants in the post-Thanksgiving sales frenzy. Last year there was some payback in December from sales pulled into late November, but stepped up discounting and support from plunging gasoline prices appear to kept sales elevated this year."</p>

In other words, VW's numbers are suspiciously low.</p><p>This has nothing to do with the emissions scandal that's currently engulfing VW. (About 11 million cars worldwide, mostly in Europe, are affected and with poisonous emissions as high as 40 times over the U.S. limit.)<br /><br />Other carmakers have been caught under reporting death and injury claims. Honda was fined <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/09/business/honda-fined-70-million-in-underreporting-safety-issues-to-government.html">$70 million</a> by US regulators earlier this year for the same reason.  <br /><br />There's no evidence in Bloomberg's story that suggests Volkswagen is deliberately underreporting claims, but the numbers are low enough that some people are questioning their accuracy.<br /><br />Volkswagen's US spokeswoman declined to comment to Bloomberg. Volkswagen's troubles in the US could be deepening

The Mumbai-based auto major on Monday launched a midsize SUV coupe <keyword id="20400827" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Curvv" source="keywords">Curvv</keyword> with petrol and diesel powertrains with a price starting at Rs 9.99 lakh. <br /><br /> The company has already unveiled the electric version of the model in August. The model would be competing with the likes of <keyword id="2883300" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai-Creta" source="Orion">Hyundai Creta</keyword>, <keyword id="7720018" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kia-Seltos" source="Orion">Kia Seltos</keyword>, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, and Honda Elevate, among others. <br /><br /> "Curvv is being positioned in the fast-growing, mid-size SUV segment, which is roughly 16% of the whole industry (passenger vehicle) size. If translated into numbers, it would be like 7 lakh units a year," Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle MD Shailesh Chandra told PTI in an interaction. <br /><br /> The segment is very competitive with various brands having a product already in the market, he noted. Therefore, if one enters this segment so late, then it will have to think of coming up with a slightly differentiated approach, Chandra said. <br /><br /> "And that was the thinking behind Curvv, which comes with an SUV coupe body style. We saw that this was gaining popularity globally, especially in the premium or luxury segment," he added. <br /><br /> Further, he said: "So we thought, why don't we bring this into the crowded segment as a fresh, refreshing kind of a body style." When asked about sales expectations from the model, Chandra said: "We have come with this model, with the best in class features. It's a differentiated product in this and therefore we think it is going to perform well." <br /><br /> He noted that Tata Motors currently has a market share of around 19% in the SUV segment and expects the new model to help it grow further. "We'll gain from where we are. The market leader in SUVs would be, say, 21-22 %, so it's a crowded segment. It's not that one player is holding the roost here. <br /><br /> "All the top 3-4 players in SUVs are around the same market share figure," Chandra said. He noted that the company is also looking to enhance its dealer network by around 10-15 % in the next one year. <br /><br /> "We have a very aggressive plan of expanding dealerships. We will need to have an enhanced network. We will have to make them bigger, also in size. And therefore, for EVs, we have started separation of the outlets. So there will be expansion in touchpoints, not only on the sales side, but big time on the service side as well," Chandra said. <br /><br /> <keyword id="20400828" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-curvv" source="keywords">Tata Curvv</keyword> comes with two petrol and a diesel engine option. "The introduction of the Curvv further enhances our SUV portfolio as a comprehensive mid-SUV product with multiple powertrains, several first-in-segment features, a brand new capable architecture - ATLAS and Level 2 ADAS," Chandra said. <br /><br /> Besides Curvv, Tata Motors sells models like Punch, Nexon, Harrier and Safari in the domestic market.

Toyota and Honda will come in down 8% and 4%, respectively.<br /><br />This might lead to a chorus of concern when the numbers come in. But this apparent weakness needs to be put in proper context. <br /><br />First, nobody is predicting a sales pace below 17 million vehicles for the year, and at least one analyst -  TrueCar's Eric Lyman - thinks the pace could be close to 18 million.</p><p>That means even if there was a year-on-year decline in May, the US market is still running as hot as it was in 2015, when a record 17.5 million new cars and trucks rolled of dealer lots.</p><p>In fact, it's worth remembering that the the market was running <em>very</em> hot in May of 2015 - closer to 18 million than the 17.5 million is eventually finished on. <br /><br />But regardless of the year-on-year comparison, some erosion of the torrid pace is to be expected. What's been keeping the market roaring is the historically high average age of the total US vehicle fleet - 11 years. Eventually, that elevated figure will decline, and demand will slacken.</p><p>Several other important factors are going to affect May sales, too, and they're also not bad news for the automakers.</p><p>First, GM has pulled back on fleet sales (high-volume sales to rental agencies and corporations). The goal here is to focus on profitability over sales volume and market share. </p><p>Second, automakers are at a critical point when it comes to incentives. In the annual report for the fiscal year 2022-23, TCS said Gopinathan earned over Rs 25 crore as commission, a salary of Rs 1.73 crore and Rs 2.43 crore in other benefits. <br /><br /> Gopinathan, who helmed the company for six years till May 31, had earned a salary Rs 25.76 crore FY22. <br /><br /> Despite heading the largest company, Gopinathan's pay cheque is lower compared to peers and also lower than what his predecessor <keyword id="97017" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="n-chandrasekaran" source="Orion">N Chandrasekaran</keyword> drew in FY17 before being appointed as the Tata Sons Chairman. <br /><br /> On his elevation to the CEO's seat from being a chief financial officer, Gopinathan drew Rs 6.22 crore in FY17 which doubled to Rs 12.5 crore in FY18 and had been steadily rising since but for a blip in FY20. <br /><br /> Gopinathan has committed to help TCS in the leadership transition by being available till September, and is yet to reveal his future plans. <br /><br /> K <keyword id="16817833" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="krithivasan" source="Orion">Krithivasan</keyword>, Gopinathan's successor, will be getting a basic salary of Rs 10 lakh per month which can go up to Rs 16 lakh, commission as decided by the board and other benefits like rent-free residential accommodation. <br /><br /> The company's chief operating officer N G Subramaniam earned a total remuneration of Rs 23.60 crore for FY23, up from about Rs 20 crore in FY22. <br /><br /> The annual report said the increase in managerial remuneration is at 13.58 per cent as against the median hike of 5.11 per cent across its 6.14 lakh permanent employees. <br /><br /> Chandrasekaran thanked Gopinathan and also wished the best for Krithivasan in his note, and said TCS is significantly investing in building AI capabilities which include products and platforms that are AI-powered. <br /><br /> "We will also invest in research areas important for the future, in collaboration with our global academic partners and start-up ecosystem," he added. <br /><br /> Krithivasan, who has been with TCS for several decades, said he has interacted with customers, leadership teams and employees as part of the leadership transition and added that an order book of USD 34.1 billion, coupled with strong pipeline of replenishment, gives it a good visibility for the medium-term. <br /><br /> Chandrasekaran also said that companies need to focus on building talent for the future as the energy, supply chain and AI (artificial intelligence) transitions are going to require companies to reskill or upskill existing talent base, hire and integrate new talent and invest in research. <br /><br /> In his note to shareholders, Gopinathan spoke about overcoming the challenges on the HR front, and said TCS' best years are ahead. <br /><br /> "We broke out of the vicious cycle of hiring and counter-hiring within the industry by investing in onboarding an unprecedented number of fresh engineers," he said, pointing out that it hired 1.10 lakh fresh engineers in FY22 and 44,000 in FY23. <br /><br /> Its global head for human resources, Milind Lakkad, said half of its over 6 lakh workforce has been hired since March 2020 and underscored the need for staff to return to working from offices. <br /><br /> "New employees get acculturated through physical interactions with senior colleagues and leaders, by observing and following their behaviors and ways of thinking. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6358835" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="electric-cars" source="Orion">Electric cars</keyword> cost 31% less to service over the first three years than gas cars, a new study says. </li><li>Electric cars had both lower maintenance and repair costs, according to We Predict. </li></ul><p>Upfront, electric cars tend to cost more than gas-fueled vehicles. But they'll save you money on maintenance in the long run.</p><p>That's according to a study out Thursday from <a href="https://www.wepredict.com/">We Predict</a>, a predictive analytics firm. The company found <keyword id="11897958" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="electric-vehicles" source="Orion">electric vehicles</keyword> cost nearly a third less to service over their first three years of ownership than combustion-engine cars.</p><p>We Predict's study contributes to a growing body of research confirming that battery-powered vehicles are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-vehicle-cost-mistake-2018-1">cheaper to own</a> than ones that run on fossil fuels. EVs have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-differences-between-gas-and-electric-vehicles-maintenance-2020-4">fewer moving parts</a> that can go bad and don't need some of the routine maintenance required of conventional cars, like oil changes. </p><p>The firm analyzed the money manufacturers and owners spent to service more than 13 million 2018-model-year vehicles over their first three years on the road. Service costs included repairs, maintenance, diagnostics, software updates, and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/bolt-ev-recall-fire-chevrolet-gm-owners-parking-50-feet-2021-9#:~:text=GM%20has%20warned%20owners%20of,feet%20away%20from%20other%20cars.&amp;text=The%20precaution%20would%20reduce%20the,stories%20on%20Insider's%20business%20page.%20page.">recalls</a>. It found that although EVs were more expensive to service early on, by the three-year mark, they became more economical. </p><p>After three years, average service costs for gas cars totaled $749. For electric cars, it was $514, 31% less. Higher labor and diagnostic costs for EVs help account for elevated service costs in the first year, Renee Stephens, We Predict's vice president of North American operations, told Insider. </p><p>We Predict chalks up the disparity in service costs mainly to lower maintenance costs for EVs. In the first three years of ownership, gas cars needed $228 in maintenance on average, compared with just $77 for electrics. Repair bills were also 22% lower for EVs. </p><p>We Predict said that total three-year service outlays for EVs ranged from $202 to $2,247, with the top performers being the Honda Clarity, Chevrolet Bolt, and Volkswagen e-Golf. </p><p>The analysis echoes findings from other recent studies, including a <a href="https://www.energy.gov/eere/vehicles/articles/fotw-1190-june-14-2021-battery-electric-vehicles-have-lower-scheduled">June report</a> from the US Department of Energy. That study found that EVs cost 6.1 cents per mile to maintain, compared to 10.1 cents per mile for combustion-engine vehicles. </p>

Ammann became CEO of Cruise when <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gm-cruise-division-new-ceo-dan-ammann-2018-11">he moved over from General Motors</a> in 2018. He had been president of the biggest US automaker and had engineered GM's acquisition of Cruise in 2016, when the Bay Area startup was Cruise Automation, led by Kyle Vogt, now the company's technology chief.</p><p><span>"From the outset we have been committed to solving the most difficult version of the self-driving challenge, as that is what will allow us to ultimately scale most quickly," Ammann wrote.</span></p><p><span>"That's why the majority of our testing occurs in San Francisco, </span>one of the most complex<span> urban environments that is more than </span>40 times more challenging than a simple suburban setting<span>. Co-founder Dan Kan, left.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>Cruise has been committed to San Francisco since its inception and has been testing Chevy-made all-electric Bolt self-driving vehicles there, but up to this point, the company hadn't explicitly identified the city as its launch location. </span></p><p><span>The process of bringing a self-driving service to San Francisco is turning out to be trickier than Cruise anticipated when it indicated it might launch in 2019; Ammann wrote that "to reach the level of performance and safety validation required to deploy a fully driverless service in San Francisco, we will be significantly increasing our testing and validation miles over the balance of this year, which has the effect of carrying the timing of fully driverless deployment beyond the end of the year."</span></p><p><span>While that news might disappoint some self-driving enthusiasts, it isn't surprising. Cruise has been periodically updating the media and potential customers on its progress for several years, but thus far in 2019 it hasn't undertaken the push that would be predictable for a company partnered with two major carmakers - GM and Honda - prior to coming to market.</span></p><h2><span>Not breaking things with self-driving cars</span></h2><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Alexei Oreskovic</span></p><p class="caption">Cruise vehicles in San Francisco.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>"When you're working on the large scale deployment of mission critical safety systems, the mindset of 'move fast and break things' certainly doesn't cut it," Ammann wrote, referencing the Silicon Valley maxim expressed by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. "With such high stakes, our first deployment needs to be done right and we will only deploy when we can demonstrate that we will have a net positive impact on safety on our roads."</span></p><p><span>Cruise has the resources to take its time. GM is funding the company to the tune of $1 billion this year, and Cruise has raised $7.2 billion in investment from Japan's SoftBank and Honda, with GM also taking additional equity stakes after Cruise was spun off of the carmaker and set up as a separate entity. He also stressed that Cruise would commence a community engagement effort in 2018, to avoid the problems that have emerged when companies such as Uber and assorted scooter startups have thrust their businesses into urban environments, forcing local governments to play catch-up.</span></p><p><span>"We will deploy with our community, not at our community," Ammann wrote. "Right now we are setting the stage by expanding and deepening partnerships with the city, first responders and other organizations that matter to San Franciscans, such as MADD and the Coalition for Clean Air."</span></p><h2><span>A commercial launch at scale, with plans for rapid growth</span></h2><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Scooter startups launched first and asked questions later.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>Cruise has grown rapidly since 2016, with its total staff up to about 1,500 employees, based in San Francisco. The company is manufacturing its own self-driving vehicles at a GM plant in Michigan - Ammann noted that it's the only entrant in the space to be doing this - and is working with Honda and GM to develop its next-generation platform.</span></p><p><span>Just as the self-driving race is heating up, a reckoning of sorts is also taking place. Earlier this month, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ford-vw-alliance-announcement-details-2019-7">Volkswagen announced that it would join Ford in investing a total of $3.6 billion in ArgoAI</a>, a startup that came out of Uber and Google. And Waymo, the former Google Car project, launched its Waymo One service in Arizona late last year.</span></p><p><span>However, for a full autonomous service to be viable, it likely needs to operate in a dense, customer-rich urban environment - the most difficult for self-driving technology to manage. For Cruise, the business plan also requires significant scale at lauch, to make good on its elevated level of investment and partnership. An incremental approach, in Ammann's view, isn't going to cut it. Cruise is also the most well-funded hybrid of the technology and auto industries; it's fate could chart a course for such partnerships moving forward.</span></p><p>That's important, because for Cruise, the Bay Area is just the beginning.
