Jungle Cry was about a bunch of boys who participated in a rugby championship. Typically we have seen that action, thriller genres slightly outperformed the other genres. Their engagement levels are higher. When it comes to gender diversity in shows and movies, what has been Lionsgate's approach in India? We are the torchbearers for gender diversity. Our lineup of shows have female protagonists. Even when we launched our first edition in India, we had female leads in Hiccups and Hookups. We are consistently working around two accounts- gender diversity and inclusion. Lionsgate has also gone and represented African-American, Hispanic and Latin American communities on a global stage. The industry itself is changing as it is moving away from a male-centric view. It is now talent as opposed to gender. How is Lionsgate Play investing in regional cinema and content? We are trying to represent India as a whole but as of now we are slightly more focused on Hindi along with our Hollywood content. Globally, our budget is around $2 billion. Which movies are creating the most amount of buzz? Feels Like Home is coming up with its second season. We are premiering Serpent Queen, Jerusalem, Unscripted Graham Norton and we just did Emmys. We want to present the type of content that customers have something to look forward to every Friday. How many minutes does an average user spend using Lionsgate Play? Our completion rate for series and movies is very high. Feels like Home alone had a 50% completion rate, which is significant. If we quantify our series, at least two to five episodes are being consumed. An average time spent per user on Lionsgate India is at least 80 minutes, sometimes going upwards (to) 100 minutes. How has the partnership with prime channels helped Lionsgate in India? We are also one of the largest partners globally when it comes to partnership with prime channels. The subscribers in India on Lionsgate are paying annual subscriptions directly as opposed to monthly subscriptions. Apart from Hindi, what language shows are Indians interested in? What OTT has done is reduced the language barrier considerably and made the audience slightly language agnostic. Earlier, the only way you could watch a dubbed movie was in a theatre or on television but it did not create any considerable monetary opportunity and OTT has tapped into that market – whether it is Korean content popular in India, or Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu content being watched in Hindi speaking markets. We did a great experiment with a dubbed Arabic movie called The Ambush and because of great content, it performed excellently in India. Can OTTs hold their own space with theatre releases by Bollywood? Brahmāstra was recently released in theatres and even though it will be released on OTT soon, I went to watch it in a theatre. The experience in a theatre is different. That experience cannot be replicated on a small screen. What OTT does is it lets you watch at the time and place of your choosing. Each has a different need they are serving. Lionsgate also looks forward to onboarding upcoming Bollywood movies. Lionsgate Play says OTT has reduced the language barrier and made the audience language agnostic

<ul><li>IMAX currently has 22 theatres in Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Delhi. </li><li>India being one of the most important markets for its market size and social media presence, IMAX is now upping its game by launching newer technologies and expanding its reach further into Tier II and III cities. </li><li>As IMAX deploys its Laser Technology in India with PVR, we speak to John Schreiner, Senior VP - Theatre Development, about its logistics, marketing plan, vision for expansion, and growth trajectory.</li><li>IMAX has already installed two laser systems in Mumbai and Delhi last year. </li></ul>IMAX has nearly tripled its theatre network in India over the last three years, making it apparent how critical the Indian market for the company is, globally. Expanding its network further in the country and upping its quality, IMAX has partnered with PVR Cinema to deploy its laser technology in Forum Mall, Bangalore and Palazzo Mall, Chennai later this year. IMAX brought in laser technology into the country at the end of last year, which uses dual 4K projectors, 12-channel sound and a laser light source instead of a prism. It delivers a higher resolution output, with sharper and brighter images, and maintains a deeper contrast. IMAX entered into a strategic partnership with PVR back in 2011 to launch its first theatre in Bangalore. Today, it has 22 theatres, 20 operational and two that are just an approval away. The next phase of expansion for IMAX will be in Tier II and III cities. Telling us how important the Indian market is for IMAX globally, John Schreiner, Senior VP - Theatre Development, said, “India is such an avid movie-going market and consumers love great experiences. Therefore, our theatres have been very successful here, it is a strategic market for us and we hope to grow that number quite dramatically. We continuously work towards finding the right ingredients to bring IMAX -- not only to the major metros, but to the second and third Tier markets. We know there are a lot of fans in these markets who want that experience because they interact with us on social media. India is one of the most active markets for us globally, in terms of social media engagement.” For IMAX, Russia is the largest market, with 42 theatres. However, population-wise, India is a larger market than Russia and Schreiner says there is a huge room for growth here and it is hoping to case its net wider in the coming years. Marketing Strategy Interestingly, IMAX’s Executive Vice President, Global Brand &amp; Creative, Denny Tu used to work with Sky TV in the UK, making sure people stay at home and watch content on their smaller screens. Now at IMAX, he encourages the same audience to come out for pop-corn crunching, and jump-out-of-your-seat experience, which is what every filmmaker originally desired for. Sharing how IMAX gets consumers to step out of the ‘Netflix and Chill’ zone, Schreiner said, “We have launched a whole new brand strategy and campaign, which helps produce assets that encourage consumers to come out for content and experience it in the best way possible. That is also getting translated here in India. We, as a company, are highly regarded in India and we will continue to interact with our Indian fans on social media, this will help us create more successful theatres in India. Apart from that, we will be bringing more local content on IMAX screens, this is our holistic approach to growth here.” Growth of OTT a threat? The window between theatrical release and television premieres is decreasing, which is threatening the theatre businesses world over. However, Schreiner says this is the best time to be working with IMAX because content production has reached its tipping point. IMAX stands for higher quality and an immersive experience, whose network is only going to grow from here, believes Schreiner. “The window is decreasing and the pressure from various stakeholders is increasing but we view that as an opportunity because you can’t experience IMAX anywhere else. Studios are making grander spectacles for movie releases and we do well with that.” IMAX has also partnered with a few streaming platforms such as Apple for ‘Beastie Boys’ documentary. Schreiner says they will continue to experiment and bring newer content for its audience -- to expand its base. “This is the golden age of content production -- with all the studios and streaming houses, there hasn’t been so much content produced globally before than today. There is an opportunity for IMAX to take advantage of that and that is going to be a driving element for our future growth,” adds Schreiner. Globally, its mantra is to enhance customer experience. It is present in 82 countries and has 1700 theatres around the world. Annual Performance In the first half of 2019, IMAX theatres generated more than $7.76 million at the box office in India, up by 18% over the first half of 2018. The economic slow-down did not affect the company in India and even globally, it was a pink season for IMAX. In fact, Schrenier says that economic slowdown brings an uptick in consumer sentiment for the cinema industry. “Last year the performance of IMAX across the world was record-breaking. We had billion dollars in the box office, across all our networks. And in India, not only IMAX, but the cinema industry was strong and resilient as well. We have noticed this globally, whenever there is an economic slowdown, affordable luxuries tend to be very resilient because consumers may not go and buy a TV or a car, but they will take their family or partners to watch a movie,” says Schreiner. Schrenier has been a part of IMAX for 19 years now but the content industry is constantly evolving, which makes him feel like ‘he has worked with three different companies.’ He joined IMAX when it was selling film projectors to museums and educational institutions. Then they added Hollywood movies and transitioned to digital projection from films. Shrenier believes that the industry is about to enter another transition phase and he feels excited to be a part of it, and witness it change every day. Going forward, Schrenier will help IMAX focus on taking advantage of the golden age of content production, invest in newer technologies to enhance customer experience, and while they are at it, help all of its partners flourish together.

IMAX triples its network in India; plans to expand further to Tier II and III cities

Wouldn’t it be great if we could relive the experience in the theatre itself? Well, Ajay Devgan’s NY Cinema in Ratlam just did that. The Bollywood actor, who started his career in 1991 Phool aur Kaante, plans to invest as much as ₹600 crore (approx $87 million) to bring old-world charm of watching movies with unique concept theatres. Speaking about the NY Cinema, Rajeev Sharma, CEO told Business Insider India that people don’t spend much time in cinemas nowadays. “We go to the cinema, watch the movie, and come back right after it ends. Ajay is very fond of cinema-going experience and wants to offer the same to people of every age group.” Sharma believes that there are a few movies which will force us to step out of the house and go to the cinema. “We cannot watch an X-men or an Avengers movie at home. <ul><li>Just when Bollywood seemed to be getting back on track with releases being planned and film shoots announced, a second surge in the number of Covid-19 cases has brought everything back to square one.</li><li>If there are no cinema halls, movies will go to OTT, but they will co-exist. A lot of good films cannot be held back, and for good reasons, they have gone to OTT, which may not have been their first choice. But they had to do it because of the pandemic.</li><li>Jehil Thakkar, Partner and media &amp; entertainment industry leader, <keyword id="6358918" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="deloitte">Deloitte</keyword> India shares how the cinema industry will change after all of this is over.</li></ul>Once again, the boards outside box-office windows across India read ‘Closed’, with no clarity as to when they will open. For theatres in states where there is no government advisory, lack of business is forcing theatres to down their shutters. On the other hand, COVID-19 and its accompanying health issues and restrictions have brought the film industry to a complete halt in terms of shoots, production and releases. The domino effect is massive as several other sectors in entertainment, media and many other businesses depend on films. The theatrical business, which in India forms the main revenue source for most films, has dropped to a trickle and is likely to remain there for the short term. As the second wave of COVID-19 accelerates across the country, theatres and production will be more widely impacted. While majority of the box office revenue in the country is generated now through multiplexes, single screens do remain a critical part of the distribution chain. The COVID-19 related lockdowns have hurt this part of the value chain much more than the multiplexes, which tend to be part of more resilient larger organisations. Many of these single screens and a few independent multiplexes may not ever open again. We lost a few in 2020 and we may lose some more in 2021. What many in the industry fear is the acceleration of a shift in viewing patterns. Consumers will make very judicious choices about the kind of film they want to consider viewing in the theatre. A larger than life, star film is more likely to draw an audience rather than a dialogue-based comedy or drama – which consumers may prefer to watch at home. This change had already been in process in large markets like the US and had begun to make its presence felt in India too. Going to see a film in a theatre is a family or community occasion across India, so we may see the Hindi film industry stage a strong comeback in the theatres later in 2021 if we see the COVID-19 tide recede. But what the pandemic may have forever changed is an established practice that saw films progress from one medium to another — from theatres to OTT to television, with fixed exhibition windows and gaps between each. With cinema halls still half-empty, and increasingly strained due to the lockdown in many parts of the country, many producers are opting to release their films on streaming platforms without waiting for a theatrical release; ‘windowing’ is, in effect, out of the window. The days when every film, without exception, would first go to the cinemas may not ever come back. We saw these industry practices break down in the US and are seeing this in India too. Over the last year – we saw many films that were intended for theatrical release but then premiered on OTT – as producers ran out of patience. While the performance of these films was mixed, many producers were determined to hold back films and wait for the situation to improve. There was a window of hope that theatrical revenue would return – especially early in the year as audiences trickled in and some films – Hollywood and south Indian releases – performed better than expected. These films may now yet again explore a release on OTT as the promise of return to normalcy stretches out. Even under-production films will see some costs rise due to COVID-19 related SOPs, lengthening timelines and regulatory restrictions. Another factor that will influence this trend is the hunger for content and capacity from OTT platforms. With over 45 OTT services in India, there is a battle for consumers. Quality content is key to drive consumers to platforms and also to convert them from free to paying subscribers. Production capacity too in the industry is limited. Production companies that can churn out film level production values at scale consistently are limited. Many OTT players, with large budgets for originals, are trying to up production capacity, which in turn may affect films and drive budgets and costs higher. The pressure to release capital and escalating costs may drive producers to explore all possible release windows in the short and medium term. To be sure, box office in India has a future and a robust one at that. The film sector will adapt and rejuvenate, as it always has. According to a Deloitte study, 83% of India watches video content on their mobiles, and this still makes the cinema experience something unique. Pundits had predicted the demise of the cinema when television was launched, then again when the video players were introduced and then again when DVDs came out. They were wrong every time. For the industry, no doubt these are challenging times, but this too shall pass and the show will go on.

Zee launches Zee Plex, its ‘Cinema2Home’ service

<ul><li><keyword id="600792" type="General" weightage="40" keywordseo="bookmyshow" source="Orion">BookMyShow</keyword>’s survey shows that India’s favourite entertainment choice is watching movies on the ‘Big Screen’.</li><li> The CineFiles survey says that 90% respondents pick the latest movie release in the theatre, as their go-to option for out-of-home leisure experiences while 63% have movies on their mind at least once every fortnight.</li><li>Not only is the movie and its storyline important, cinephiles are also very picky about seats.</li></ul> The charm of Shah Rukh Khan can only come alive on the silver screen. Movie studios and multiplex chains, who were a worried lot only last year with multiple flops on the big screen, can now take heart because Indians are not done with the cinema experience. The love for cinema is still as strong as it used to be in India pre-pandemic and the success of big budget larger-than-life movies like <keyword id="1519" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pathan" source="Orion">Pathan</keyword> and <keyword id="6363925" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jawan" source="Orion">Jawan</keyword> are proof of that. Moreover, movies like <keyword id="7741791" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tiger-3" source="Orion">Tiger 3</keyword>, Dunki and Project K, all with big budgets, are in the release pipeline. In other words, the onslaught of OTT and web series on theatres, especially after the pandemic broke out, seems to be over and hasn’t dulled the romance of the silver screen is the key takeaway from entertainment platform BookMyShow’s consumer survey. The report, titled ‘The CineFiles,’ has found that 98% Indians believe cinematic magic can only be brought alive on the big screen with a third of them attributing it to certain directors, themes, visual effects (VFX) amongst others. In fact, the preferred entertainment out-of-home option for 90% respondents is catching the latest movie release in the theatre amongst other leisure activities such as shopping, live gigs, adventure outings and more. With 63% having movies on their mind at least once every fortnight, the cinematic experience is not yet on the wane. And this is true for cinephiles across the length and breadth of the country, with the younger GenZ and Millennial cohorts thinking of the big screen experience for their movie watching outing every week. The survey was conducted across 5,000 respondents, of which 41% were GenZ and 59% were Millennials and GenX. The respondents were spread across 650 towns and cities. According to Ashish Saksena, COO - Cinemas - at BookMyShow, “The enduring love for movies over the years remains unshaken. First day, first shows continue as a sacred tradition for many fans, inspiring cheers, whistles and endless applause at the sight of beloved stars on the big screen. The film industry's tenacity and adaptability shine through its continual evolution. As an enabler to this world of movies on the big screen, it brings us immense joy to engage with and cater to both a burgeoning younger audience and devoted fans across generations, united in their love for this timeless form of entertainment.” Indian cinephiles also happen to be quite the planners with 74% keeping an eye out for movies that resonate with them and plan ahead, at least three days in advance, while 26% still prefer a spontaneous dash to the latest flick. It is not just watching the movie that matters, as 74% cinephiles said they were particular about getting a seat of their choice when watching a movie in the theatre and therefore plan ahead while booking tickets. The key determinants for choosing to step out for a movie experience on the big screen for these consumers remain the storyline, the cast and director, reviews and ratings and the trailer’s impact on them. The survey shows that 43% Mumbaikars choose storyline as the most critical trigger for them to catch a movie in a theatre, significantly higher than other cities., while 38% Delhi-ites rank reviews and ratings highest to determine and decide the film to watch on the big screen. For 32% Bengaluru-eans, the director helming the movie is the most important factor in their decision to watch a movie on the silver screen rather than the movie being a blockbuster release or its trailer previews which are of significantly lower importance. The decision made by the public continues to determine that ‘Content is King’. The first day, first show mania makes a comeback just like the good ol’ times across the board with 35% GenZs, in particular, preferring the early bird experience. Call it the pandemic effect if you will but 36% of GenZ and Millennial audiences opt to watch a movie on the big screen to find an escape from stress and responsibilities, disconnect from reality and fully engage in the immersive experience! Seasoned GenX cinephiles on the other hand, give a high importance to the cast of the movie and recommendations from family and friends before going ahead for the cinematic ride!
