People have been opting for white and other light colors on their walls, aiming to create a clean look.</p><p>However, darker paint colors are becoming popular again, and Ben and Erin Napier, the hosts of HGTV's "Home Town," told Insider they're excited that people are opting for richer shades.  </p><p>"People are less afraid of dark rooms now," Erin told Insider. "I think it's exciting to see more of a return to color on the wall - dark, saturated, moody color."</p><div type="image" title="kitchen dark wall" height="2418" width="3224" msid="80106140" hostid="261"></div><h2>Painting the walls a dark hue is an easy way to create contrast in a home</h2><p>Erin embraced dark paint colors when decorating homes' interiors and exteriors on the latest season of "Home Town," which premiered on Sunday. </p><p>"I used black a lot this season," Erin said. "I painted a couple exteriors black and dark, dark green."</p><p>Erin encouraged people to experiment with darker paint hues because they can make other parts of a room stand out. For example, dark paint can draw attention to lighter-colored furniture, while richer-hued kitchen cabinets can make more neutral walls pop.</p><p>"Don't be afraid of darkness," she added. "It creates contrast."</p><p>The Napiers also warned against abiding by <keyword id="30873" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="home-decor">home decor</keyword> trends too closely, as they can be difficult to keep track of.</p><p>"If you are following a trend, you've already missed it," Ben said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Renovating your <keyword id="6363870" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="home">home</keyword> can be costly, especially if you don't have a firm <keyword id="6373314" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Design">design</keyword> plan.</li><li>Insider spoke with interior design experts Tamara Day and Jeremiah Brent about how to best use your money and resources when upgrading your home.</li><li>The experts recommend researching design styles and making a <keyword id="6358021" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="budget">budget</keyword> before you jump into renovations.</li><li>They also think superficial changes like fresh paint, new hardware, and upgraded decorative finishes can drastically change your home. </li></ul><p>The point of taking on a <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/home-renovation">renovation</a> project is to create a space that makes you feel at home. </p><p>But the actual process of a renovation can be stressful, particularly if you don't want to spend too much money or aren't sure how to start the project.</p><p>Insider spoke to two design experts — Tamara Day, an <keyword id="6466632" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="interior-designer">interior designer</keyword> and the host of HGTV's <a href="https://www.hgtv.com/shows/bargain-mansions">"Bargain Mansions,"</a> and Jeremiah Brent, a designer and the host of TLC's <a href="https://www.tlc.com/tv-shows/nate-jeremiah-by-design/">"Nate and Jeremiah By Design"</a> and Netflix's <a href="https://www.netflix.com/title/81014405">"Say I Do"</a> — about the best way to approach a renovation. </p><h2>Creating a solid plan will lead to a more cohesive look — and will help make the most of your resources </h2><p>Day warns against jumping into home renovations without a firm plan. </p><p>If you start adding individual elements to your home that you like rather than taking the time to plan a cohesive look, the space can look disjointed, she told Insider. </p><p>"It can feel like you didn't know which direction you were going with your style, and it can look confused versus interesting," Day said.</p><div type="image" title="tamara day before after 1" height="900" width="1200" msid="79154767" hostid="261"></div><p>Day recommends gathering inspiring home photos as the first step of a <keyword id="1068749" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Home-renovation">home renovation</keyword> plan.</p><p>"Spend some time on Instagram and Pinterest and find rooms that you like," she said. "Pull 100 or 200 images of rooms that you love, and see what the consistent thread in the look and the style is."</p><p>"There are elements of every style that we all love, but finding the right style for your home is huge," Day added.</p><p>In the same vein of creating a design plan, Brent said that he recommends owners outline their finances before the renovation.</p><p>"The biggest mistake with home renovations is the urge to swing a sledgehammer and ask questions later," Brent told Insider. "Get organized. Budget the items you need and only do one room at a time."</p><h2>Before you start spending money, take a look at the items you already have</h2><p>While you will likely have to spend money to renovate your home, it might not be as much as you think.</p><p>Before you start buying new decorative pieces, Brent suggests evaluating items you already own and reimagining their place in the house. Brent and his husband, Nate Berkus, who is also an interior design expert and the co-host of "Nate and Jeremiah By Design," often reimagine their living space with small changes. </p><p>"My husband firmly believes in the idea of curating your home and changing your space," Brent said. "By simply moving art or repurposing different rooms in your home, you can instantly make your home feel fresh and new." </p><p>For example, homeowners can create multi-purpose spaces to give rooms a new feeling without an entire renovation.</p><p>"You can easily rethink the way you're using traditional rooms in your home," Brent said. "The formal dining room doesn't need to be for dining if you aren't having people over to gather."</p><p>Likewise, Brent thinks you can make stylistic choices with your appliances, too.</p><p>"Appliances don't have to stick out like a sore thumb," he said. "I look for options that marry form and function."</p><p>For instance, Brent swears by the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Saeco-SM7684-04-Automatic-Espresso/dp/B07G3XYR3R">Saeco Xelsis</a> coffee maker because he likes how he's able to adapt it to different spaces. "You can add it to a sitting room or bar area to actually make the space more curated and more useful," he said.</p><h2>Paint can also drastically change a space</h2><p>If you don't need to make any big structural changes to your home, simply painting a room can make it look brand-new.</p><p>"A fresh coat of paint can make a huge difference," Day said. </p><p>Brent agreed, calling paint a foolproof way to bring new life to a home. </p><p>"There's a reason everyone says paint is the easiest and most inexpensive way to add personality," Brent said. Refresh your hardwoods, carpet, or tile for a brand-new look.</p><h2>Updating hardware or decorative finishes is crucial to a home's overall feel</h2><p>You might think of hardware as a detail, but it actually plays a big role in interior design, according to Day and Brent.</p><p>Day pointed to light fixtures as decorative pieces that can work as statement pieces and aren't too expensive.</p><p>"I go over the top with my lighting," Day said. "I like it really bright, and I like to see every element that I've designed."</p><p>Lighting can dictate the mood of a space, and the fixtures themselves will elevate the look of a room. </p><div type="image" title="tamara day before after 3" height="900" width="1200" msid="79154772" hostid="261"></div><p>Likewise, Brent recommended using decorative finishes to create a tonal shift in a room without spending too much money.</p><p>"Wood planks, plaster, or even shiplap are all fantastic ways to bring in a ton of texture and personality without breaking the bank," Brent said.</p><p>He also suggests swapping smaller decor pieces and accessories throughout the year. </p><p>"I love a seasonal refresh," Brent said. "You can easily change your throw pillows or blanket so that they match the hues of the season." </p><h2>Hiring a professional designer might actually save you money</h2><p>Many people who are <a href="https://www.insider.com/flip-house-mistakes-expert-hgtv-advice-tamara-day-2020-11">renovating on a budget</a> opt to tackle all projects themselves and may think of an interior designer as an additional expense — but Day pointed out that professional design expertise should be seen as a resource.</p><p>"Hiring somebody that knows the trends and knows the styles can help you save a lot of money," Day said. For this DIY, McGowan chose one of her favorite wicker baskets, which is <a href="https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/fladis-basket-seagrass-60322173/">Ikea's $15 Flädis basket</a>. </p><p>You'll also need a pendant light, which retails for <a href="https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/hemma-cord-set-with-switch-white-40312325/">$10 at Ikea</a>, a pair of scissors, and ceiling hooks, which cost <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Inches-Ceiling-Coated-Kitchen-Outdoor/dp/B08D3P9HKD/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&amp;keywords=ceiling+hooks&amp;qid=1618254506&amp;sr=8-36&amp;sr=8-3">$8 on Amazon</a>.</p><p>For this hack, McGowan decided to paint half of the basket white, so if you choose to paint your basket, you'll need that, too. McGowan used white acrylic paint and a paintbrush. </p><h2><strong>How to do it yourself</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="McGowan had to cut a hole and paint the basket for this Ikea hack. Kirsten McGowan " height="900" width="1200" msid="82056052" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Once McGowan gathered her materials, she started the simple DIY project.</p><p><strong>Step 1.</strong> First, remove the handles from your basket and cut a hole in the basket's bottom.</p><p><strong>Step 2.</strong> If you're painting the basket, paint it and let it dry.</p><p><strong>Step 3.</strong> Once it's dry, loop the pendant light through the bottom of the basket.</p><p><strong>Step 4.</strong> Drill your hooks into the ceiling where you would like the fixture to hang.</p><p><strong>Step 5.</strong> Hang the light fixture, plug it in, and turn it on.</p><p>McGowan also shared the step-by-step instructions in a YouTube video, which you can watch below. </p><p>It was so simple that after the first hack, McGowan said she tried a similar one.</p><div type="image" title="Kristen McGowan made two DIY hanging lamps." height="900" width="1200" msid="82056053" hostid="261"></div><p>For the second pendant hack, she weaved twine around an Ikea glass lampshade and added fun pompoms.</p><p>McGowan said hacking Ikea wicker baskets is a great way to add texture, interest, and some affordable lighting to any room in your home.</p>

Reporter Vicky Ward described the interior as a "high-walled, eclectic, imperious fantasy that seems to have no boundaries."</p><p>The entrance hallway, as noted by Ward, featured "<span>row upon row of individually framed eyeballs." Epstein reportedly <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2003/03/jeffrey-epstein-200303">told Ward</a> that they were made for injured soldiers and imported from England. </span></p><h3><span>A giant sculpture of a naked African warrior</span></h3><p>After she made her way through the entrance hallway, Ward <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2003/03/jeffrey-epstein-200303">described</a> seeing a "twice-life-size sculpture of a naked African warrior."</p><h3><span>A stuffed black poodle on top of a piano</span></h3><p>Ward also <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2003/03/jeffrey-epstein-200303">described</a> seeing a stuffed black poodle on top of a piano. </p><p><span>"No decorator would ever tell you to do that," Epstein told Ward. "But I want people to think what it means to stuff a dog." </span></p><h3><span>Prosthetic breasts in the master bathroom</span></h3><p><span>One of Jeffrey Epstein's alleged victims, Jennifer Araoz, recently sued Epstein's estate, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/14/nyregion/epstein-lawsuit-jennifer-araoz-rape.html">The New York Times</a> reported.</span></p><p><span>The lawsuit states, as reported by The New York Times, that prosthetic breasts were mounted on a wall in the master bathroom, and that Epstein could <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/14/nyregion/epstein-lawsuit-jennifer-araoz-rape.html">look at or play with</a> them while in the bathtub. </span></p><h3>A "trophy room" with a stuffed giraffe</h3><p>Araoz's lawsuit against Epstein <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/14/nyregion/epstein-lawsuit-jennifer-araoz-rape.html">also describes</a> a "trophy room" filled with stuffed exotic animals, including a giraffe.</p><h3><span>A painted mural of himself in prison</span></h3><p>An array of paintings reportedly hung around the Manhattan home.</p><p>But one painting in particular, which hung on the second floor, portrayed Epstein behind barbed wire and between a guard station and a corrections officer, public relations specialist R. Couri Hay told <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/08/nyregion/jeffrey-epstein-nyc-mansion.html">The New York Times</a>.  </p><p>According to Hay, Epstein said that he had it painted because "there is always the possibility that could be me again."</p><p>R. Couri Hay viewed the mural after being invited to the home by Epstein around four months ago, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/08/nyregion/jeffrey-epstein-nyc-mansion.html">The New York Times</a>.</p><h3><span>A life-size doll that hung from a chandelier</span></h3><p><span>As visitors came and went over the years, Epstein's peculiar taste in interior decor was hard to ignore.</span></p><p><span>Inside the mansion, there was reportedly a life-size female doll that hung from a chandelier, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/08/nyregion/jeffrey-epstein-nyc-mansion.html">The New York Times</a>.</span><span></span></p><h3><span>A chessboard with each piece modeled after one of his staffers</span></h3><p>One visitor told <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/08/nyregion/jeffrey-epstein-nyc-mansion.html">The New York Times</a> that inside the mansion, at the end of the stairwell, there was a chessboard with custom figures. Each piece was reportedly modeled after one of his staffers.</p><h3><strong>Pictures of powerful people</strong></h3><p>Following Epstein's death, The New York Times reporter<span> </span><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/12/business/jeffrey-epstein-interview.html">James B. Stewart</a><span> </span>described a 2018 "on background" interview he had conducted with Epstein in the financier's Upper East Side mansion.</p><p>As he made his way through the home, he recalled seeing photos of Epstein with powerful people including former <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/bill-clinton">President Bill Clinton</a> and director <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/woody-allen">Woody Allen</a>.</p><p>"Displaying photos of celebrities who had been caught up in sex scandals of their own also struck me as odd," wrote Stewart.</p><p>Epstein also had a picture of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/mbs">Mohammad bin Salman</a><span>, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, according to Stewart.</span></p><h3><span>A painting of Bill Clinton in a blue dress and heels</span></h3><p><span>Law enforcement sources told the <a href="https://nypost.com/2019/08/14/epstein-had-bizarre-painting-of-bill-clinton-in-dress-heels-in-townhouse/">New York Post</a> that Epstein had an oil painting of Bill Clinton in a blue dress hanging in the mansion.</span></p><p>In the painting, according to the Post, Bill Clinton is lounging on a chair in the oval office.
