The Centre has blocked over 100 websites involved in facilitating organised illegal investments related to economic crimes and task-based part-time job frauds. According to an official statement, these websites were being operated by overseas actors and targets were mostly retired employees, women and unemployed youth looking for part time jobs. The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), a wing of the Union Home Ministry, through its vertical National Cybercrime Threat Analytics Unit (NCTAU) had last week identified and recommended that these websites be blocked. Following this, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), invoking its power under the Information Technology Act, 2000, has blocked these websites, the statement said. These websites, which facilitated task-based organised illegal investment related to economic crimes, were learnt to be operated by overseas actors and were using digital advertisement, chat messengers and mule and rented accounts. The proceeds from the large scale economic frauds were seen to be laundered out of <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> using card network, crypto currency, overseas ATM withdrawals and international Fintech companies, the statement said. The I4C is an initiative of the Home Ministry to deal with cyber crimes in the country in a coordinated and comprehensive manner. <keyword id="6366773" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="citizens" source="Orion">Citizens</keyword> have been advised to promptly report phone numbers and social media handles used by such fraudsters to the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP), the statement said. It said several complaints have been received through 1930 helpline and the NCRP and these offences were posing significant threat to the citizens and also involved data security concerns. These frauds, typically, involve a number of steps that include targeted digital advertisements launched on platforms like Google and Meta using key words like "Ghar baithe job" (Do jobs sitting at home), "Ghar baithe kamai kaise karen" (How to earn by sitting at home) etc. in multiple languages from overseas advertisers. Upon clicking the advertisement, an agent using WhatsApp or Telegram starts conversation with the potential victim, who convinces him or her to perform some tasks like video likes and subscribe, maps rating, etc. Upon completion of task, the victim is given some commission, initially and is asked to invest more to get more returns against given task. After gaining confidence, when victim deposits larger sum, deposits are frozen and thus the victim is duped. As precautionary measure, it is advised to exercise due diligence before investing in any such very high commission paying online schemes sponsored over internet. If an unknown person contacts anyone over WhatsApp or Telegram, refrain from performing financial transactions without verification, the statement said Verify the name of receiver mentioned in UPI App. If receiver is any random person, it may be a mule account and scheme may be fraudulent.Similarly, check the source from where initial commission is received, it said. Citizens should refrain from doing transactions with unknown accounts, as these could be involved in money laundering and even terror financing and lead to blocking of accounts by police and other legal action, the statement said. To protect her students' privacy, she asked to be identified only by her first name."You're always on a knife's edge with what's going to happen the next day. Young teenage kids can be a little bit unpredictable," Chani, now 51, told Business Insider. "I always thought, 'One day, I'm going to live in a Japanese house in the countryside, and that'll be me, outside, tending to my garden.'"Her time in Japan had such an impact on her that she decided to learn the language formally after returning to Australia. In university, she specialized in teaching Japanese — and that's what she did for the next two decades.Now, Chani is an English teacher in a Japanese school in Wakayama, a town about 45 minutes from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-japanese-cities-to-visit-according-to-frequent-traveler-2024-7">Osaka</a>. She also runs an online Japanese language course on the side."I decided to be here based on how quickly I could get home, because I have parents who are in their seventies, and I've got two kids," she said. "I wanted to be able to jump on a plane the next day if I needed to and not have a long trek to an international airport."Brisbane is about nine hours away from Osaka by plane. The nation's <a target="_blank" rel="" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tokyo-government-launching-dating-app-marriage-rates-population-decline-japan-2024-6">shrinking population</a> and internal migration from the countryside to the cities have resulted in millions of unoccupied houses in rural areas.Local governments are listing some of these akiya <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/japanese-government-selling-rural-homes-cheap-akiya-banks-2021-5">for sale for as low as $500</a> in a bid to lure new residents to these "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/japan-ghost-towns-population-vacancy-rates-akiya-banks-2021-6">ghost towns</a>."Due to a lack of restrictions on foreigners purchasing property in Japan, an increasing number of foreigners <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/people-moving-buying-abandoned-homes-japan-let-foreigners-own-home-2024-1">are choosing to buy and revitalize these old homes.</a>"I didn't want to make the mistake of buying in the wrong area, so I asked quite a few locals who were very candid with me about the various 'no-go zones,'" she said.<div type="image" title="The study." height="961" width="1280" msid="114798003" hostid="261" sizebytes="136542"></div>Once she decided on the general neighborhood that she wanted to live in, she started doing drive-bys and walk-bys of various listings before narrowing down her choices.With the help of a real-estate agent, she found the perfect akiya to call home.It was a two-story house, with three bedrooms upstairs and a living area, a dining room, and a kitchen downstairs.Although the property had been sitting empty for about 6 years, it was well-maintained by the family of the former owners.<div type="image" title="The kitchen." height="1566" width="2088" msid="114798001" hostid="261" sizebytes="72208"></div>"When I walked through it, it was still pretty dirty; It was obvious it hadn't been lived in for a long time, but it wasn't falling down," Chani said.The main thing that drew her to this particular property was its huge front room."I have a car, and all of the other akiya that I looked at had no parking," Chani said.Her whole goal was to live rent-free — save for her monthly utility bills — and having to rent a separate parking spot somewhere in the neighborhood didn't make sense."It was just another bill that I had to pay that I was trying to avoid. I'm literally in fields of rice," she said.But that doesn't mean that it's difficult for her to get around either."I've got five convenience stores wrapped around me. The supermarket is a five-minute walk, while the closest train station is an eight-minute walk, she said, adding that she can even walk to her office in 18 minutes.<h2 id="6fda2420-a1fa-45d9-bd7e-559ca62f7e44">'Manifested' her dream life</h2>Chani has also been documenting her akiya journey and her life in Japan on <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.youtube.com/@ChaniJapan">YouTube</a>.While there are many foreigners who are running similar channels dedicated to renovating akiya, Chani said she couldn't relate to their experiences.Lawrence Covian, a US Army vet, and his wife previously told BI they <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-veteran-moved-japan-abandoned-house-akiya-foreigner-renovation-2024-9">bought an akiya in Iwakuni for $35,000</a>. His job with the US government had brought him to Japan, and now he has no plans to return. "Where are the women who are in their middle age who are buying houses? There was no one that I could follow to get guidance."That encouraged her to share her own journey online."I thought there might be someone like me who wanted to do this but didn't have anyone that they could look at and get information from, she added.She has a piece of advice for others who are also interested in moving abroad: Don't rush into the decision."For me, it was all about having that long connection with Japan and knowing what I was getting myself into," Chani said.That said, a lot of problems can be solved, and there's no need to let fear stand in the way of a new adventure — especially if it's a lifelong dream, she added.Looking back on her journey, Chani says she's glad she found the courage to take the leap and build the life she'd always dreamed of."I'm really, really happy with life here in Japan, and I've gradually formed new friendships," she said.Of course, she wishes her family were here, too, but that's OK because they stay connected via video calls and are planning to visit, she said."I sort of manifested it when I was 18, but then life got in the way," she said. "But I guess it was always in the back of my mind. Only a few of the glamorous and wealthy women that the writer surrounded himself with were spared from being satirized in the piece, which recounts several hushed conversations had and heard at the titular restaurant.Capote's friendships with his so-called "swans" were the collateral; many, <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20240125-feud-capote-vs-the-swans-how-a-scandalous-truman-capote-story-exposed-the-secrets-of-us-high-society">including Babe Paley</a>, never spoke to him again.According to the book <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=df118f153537eb48de1c89cf4173891e4b2e1dac09acfe1c9d5e408287cbeed7&amp;postID=65bd4d56ecccec8902880377&amp;postSlug=feud-capote-swans-babe-bill-paley-marriage-happy-rockefeller-affair-2024-2&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FCapotes-Women-True-Story-Betrayal-ebook%2Fdp%2FB08VS559S9">"Capote's Women" by Laurence Leamer</a> (which executive producer Murphy and lead writer Jon Robin Baitz based this season of "Feud" on) Paley saw one of the most humiliating moments laid bare for all to read in the story.<div type="image" title="Bill Paley (Treat Williams) in episode 1 of &quot;Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.&quot;" height="1255" width="3000" msid="107389055" hostid="261" sizebytes="146250"></div>In "La Côte Basque 1965," the character Lady Ina Coolbirth (largely believed to have been based on Slim Keith) tells her dining partner about a salacious incident she had heard about Sidney Dillon, the "conglomateur" husband of the glamorous housewife Cleo Dillon.The story, in essence, is that Sidney experienced a fraught night of trying to clean menstrual blood out of his bedsheets after he hooks up with another woman when his wife is away.This incident is recreated in the pilot episode of "Feud" but ends a little differently. While the husband in the "La Côte Basque 1965" story manages to hide his thwarted night of passion from his wife by getting the stains out of the sheets, in "Feud," we see Babe walk in on her husband as he's still desperately scrubbing away — and then take care of the sheets herself.<h2>There are conflicting theories on the identity of the woman Bill Paley had an affair with</h2>According to <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.vanityfair.com/culture/2012/12/truman-capote-answered-prayers">Vanity Fair</a>, after the story was published, there was little doubt that the Dillons were supposed to be stand-ins for the real-life Paleys, especially as Capote hadn't attempted to change any of their attributes.However, one thing that wasn't immediately clear was the identity of the other woman, who Capote describes in the story as a "homely beast, legal spouse of a former New York governor."<div type="image" title="Babe Paley (Naomi Watts) in episode 1 of &quot;Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.&quot;" height="798" width="1920" msid="107389056" hostid="261" sizebytes="70720"></div>Leamer's "Capote's Women" theorizes that the woman in question was Marie Harriman, the wife of W. Per an obituary in <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.nytimes.com/1970/09/27/archives/mrs-w-averell-harriman-dies-former-governors-wife-was-67-humor-and.html">The New York Times</a>, she was an acquaintance of Capote's.However, "Feud" casts another former first lady of New York in the role: Margaretta Fitler "Happy" Rockefeller (played by Rebecca Creskoff), the wife of Vice President Nelson Rockefeller, who was the New York governor from 1959 to 1973.In an author's note that accompanies the novel "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=bc27b736491c6bf7889429eaf45ae2bf07ea1cde61801054ee3c59d2472dea36&amp;postID=65bd4d56ecccec8902880377&amp;postSlug=feud-capote-swans-babe-bill-paley-marriage-happy-rockefeller-affair-2024-2&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FSwans-Fifth-Avenue-Novel%2Fdp%2F0345528700">The Swans of Fifth Avenue</a>," which is loosely based on Capote and his coterie of socialites, author Melanie Benjamin states that the prevailing belief at the time "La Côte Basque 1965" was published was that the woman was Rockefeller.However, she adds: "More likely, the woman in the story was an amalgamation of the many women with whom Paley had affairs.""Feud: Capote vs. The Swans" airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on FX.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The construction industry is facing a labor shortage of about 500,000 workers this year.</li><li>The worker shortage is pushing up housing costs amid a national housing shortage. </li></ul>When the pandemic hit the US in the spring of 2020, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/housing-market-recovery-mortgage-rates-outlook-inventory-construction-demand-nahb-2024-1">construction</a> projects of all kinds froze and workers were <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cpwr.com/wp-content/uploads/DataBulletin-July2020.pdf">laid off in huge numbers</a>. But as remote work took hold and many sought larger homes, demand for new residential construction quickly picked up and workers were back on the job.That momentum has kept up. Over the last four years, the industry has seen a surge in demand for labor amid <a target="_blank" href="https://www.jchs.harvard.edu/blog/estimating-national-housing-shortfall">a nationwide shortage of housing</a> and a surge in new government funding for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-laws-us-infrastructure-invest-funding-2024-3">major infrastructure projects</a>. This year, the construction industry is short about 500,000 workers — and that's "on top of the normal pace of hiring," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.abc.org/News-Media/News-Releases/abc-2024-construction-workforce-shortage-tops-half-a-million">according to</a> a January 2024 news release from the trade group Associated Builders and Contractors. The worker shortage is now the biggest issue builders are facing, experts say."Contractors do tell me that finding workers is their number one problem," Ken Simonson, chief economist at the Associated General Contractors of America, told Business Insider.While the rising cost of housing is in large part a result of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.aeaweb.org/articles?id=10.1257/jep.32.1.3">restrictive zoning laws and building regulations</a>, the construction worker shortage is also pushing up home costs. Fewer construction workers means less — and slower — residential construction, which in turn leads to higher home prices, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.haas.berkeley.edu/wp-content/uploads/Howard_Wang_Zhang_Housing-Supply-and-Construction-Labor-Dayin-Zhang.pdf?ref=thebuildersdaily.com#:~:text=We%20show%20that%20negative%20shocks,2019%2C%20Freddie%20Mac%202017).">according to a 2023 report</a> from researchers at the University of Utah and the University of Wisconsin-Madison."It boils down to that age-old supply and demand in the sense of if there are fewer workers to work on the projects, that's going to elongate the project, the completion, that's going to increase the cost of the project itself," Kit Dickinson, an industry executive at ADP — a human capital management solutions provider — told Business Insider. "Conversely, that creates a great demand for these workers, which can command a higher wage."Builders and infrastructure projects are in desperate need of all kinds of construction workers, but especially skilled tradespeople. Dickinson said there aren't enough plumbers, pipefitters, or people in other trades to meet growing demand.Demand for workers is only expected to rise with the construction of major infrastructure and clean energy projects — in part funded by big federal packages, including the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/whats-in-the-infrastructure-bill-amtrak-clean-energy-2021-7">Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021</a>, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/house-passes-inflation-reduction-act-sending-it-to-biden-2022-8">Inflation Reduction Act of 2022</a>, and the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chips-act-bill-to-boost-us-chipmaking-competition-with-china-2022-7">CHIPS and Science Act of 2022</a>. Ben Brubeck, vice president of regulatory, labor and state affairs at Associated Builders and Contractors, said the US will see an uptick in demand for skilled tradespeople for these "mega" projects, "not only in their initial construction but also in their operation and maintenance," he added.<h2>Growing the workforce</h2>Both short- and long-term solutions to the worker shortage are key."I think the construction industry has long been saying our workforce is rapidly retiring, and it needs to be replenished," Maja Rosenquist, senior vice president of builder and development company Mortenson, told Business Insider. "We need to be as inclusive as possible to make sure that we've got the right workforce in the future."Simonson said that allowing more <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/typical-immigrant-united-states-jobs-construction-food-services-florida-california-2024-4">immigrants</a> into the country <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/21/business/construction-industry-needs-immigrant-workers/index.html">to fill construction jobs</a> is crucial. But the US also needs to create a stronger pipeline of young people interested in pursuing construction as a career, he said. This will require more funding from the federal government, he said, but also more local support."It really also comes down to state and local school district policies and individual guidance counselors, teachers and parents to get the message to kids that there are lucrative, rewarding — both financially and in satisfaction — careers in construction," Simonson said.Brubeck said his organization is trying to promote the trades as a path into the middle class, and potentially to owning a business, as many tradespeople ultimately run their own operations. "We think it's sort of the best-kept secret, the fact that you can earn while you learn. You don't get in this college debt cycle," he said. "And you've got a job ready for you basically right away."The increasing use of technology in construction could also be a draw for younger generations."There's a stronger technology element that people might not be initially aware of and come to understand that construction is a very high-tech industry," Dickinson said, noting the use of technology from the work site to the construction office.That even includes usage of AI, "to help with planning and bidding on future projects, as well as executing projects," Dickinson said.Highlighting the diverse work opportunities in construction could also be helpful for employers and builders looking to increase employment.Rosenquist said it's an "amazing industry in terms of you can pretty much do anything you want to in this industry.""But I think the general population when they think about, oh, my kids going into construction just has this vision of a hard hat and holding a sign," Rosenquist said.President Joe Biden is <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-union-endorsement-651dd9dd2eb8e16ab898366e9501dc4e">relying on union support</a> in his re-election campaign and is widely viewed as the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/biden-is-the-most-pro-labor-president-since-fdr-will-it-matter-in-november">most pro-union president</a> since Franklin D. Roosevelt."These are relatively good jobs, especially if they're jobs with unions," Heather Boushey, a member of the president's Council of Economic Advisers and chief economist for Investing in America, told Business Insider in 2023 about construction jobs. "If they're represented by a union, people can know that their safety issues are being focused on by the union and the like."Some experts say the federal government is overly concerned with prioritizing union labor, which makes up a small fraction of the broader construction workforce. By <a target="_blank" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/briefing-room/2023/12/18/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-action-to-support-economic-and-efficient-construction-projects-while-creating-good-paying-and-union-jobs/">requiring union workers</a> for most large federal government-funded projects, "the Biden administration is actually exacerbating the skilled labor shortage that we have because there just isn't enough union labor to do this work," Brubeck said.<h2>Making the industry more appealing to women</h2>Boushey pointed out that the share of women in the overall construction industry has climbed. Experts find attracting more women needs to be a priority in construction.To do so, that would include more accommodations, which Dickinson said "whether it's nursing stations at the job site or daycare, to making the equipment more tailored to different genders and body types as opposed to a one-size-fits-all."Rosenquist said that she's encouraged by the future of prefabricated construction, which could be more attractive to women."Maybe they're going to the same manufacturing facility every single day for five years versus being on a job site where they're changing locations every five months," Rosenquist said.But the construction industry has lost some of its edge as compensation in other industries, including restaurants and hospitality, <a target="_blank" href="https://stateline.org/2024/01/09/hospitality-workers-wages-are-rising-faster-than-high-earners-in-most-states/">has risen</a>, and remote and hybrid jobs offer cushier, more flexible alternatives, Simonson said.
