Chandigarh, <keyword id="6354953" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="punjab">Punjab</keyword> has received four <keyword id="10502621" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="holstein-friesian-breed-bulls">Holstein Friesian breed bulls</keyword>, imported from Germany, to enhance <keyword id="5669805" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Germ-Plasm">germ plasm</keyword> of <keyword id="10502622" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="crossbreed-cows">crossbreed cows</keyword>, state Animal Husbandry and <keyword id="380965" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dairy-Development">Dairy Development</keyword> Minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa said on Sunday. He said under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, <keyword id="9647783" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-national-dairy-development-board">the National Dairy Development Board</keyword> has provided the bulls to to the state to boost milk production and to improve breed of milch cattle. As the traditional agriculture is no longer lucrative owing to rapidly increasing cost of food production, the state is focusing on developing dairy as an allied farming sector, he said. Additional Chief Secretary, Animal Husbandry, V.K. Janjua said the imported bulls are in the age of 10 to 12 months and semen production will start in two years. He said during first year 8,000-10,000 semen straw production is expected from them and will increase to 25,000 semen straws in the coming years. The exotic germ plasm would be introduced into the local gene pool, resulting in overall improvement of the breed, Janjua said. Director Animal Husbandry H.S. Kahlon said the bulls have been kept at the semen bank in Ropar town. When the semen production will start, the semen straws will be distributed to all veterinary hospitals and dispensaries of districts through it. According to researchers, these cloned cows are capable of producing 50% more milk than the average American cow. Scientists sampled tissues from cows across China and used what's called the somatic cell nuclear transfer method, which involves taking the nucleus from a body cell of the animal to be cloned and transferring it into a donated egg cell. Then embryos were placed inside surrogate cows. The cloning experiment began last year at the Northwest University of Agricultural and Forestry Science and Technology in Shaanxi, China. The three calves, bred by scientists, were born in the Ningxia region in the weeks leading up to the Lunar New Year on January 23. These calves were cloned from highly productive cows from the Holstein Friesian breed, which originated in the Netherlands. According to Chinese state media, the chosen animals are capable of producing 18 tons of milk per year, which is nearly 1.7 times the amount of milk an average cow in the United States produces. <keyword id="16338090" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jin-yaping" source="Orion">Jin Yaping</keyword>, the lead scientist called this a birth of ‘super cows.’ Furthermore, he said, this breakthrough has great significance for China to concentrate and preserve in an economically feasible way the very best cows in the country, and ‘super cows’ are efforts to revitalize its agricultural sector with breeder animals. For dairy cows, China is 70% reliant on overseas purchases. According to Global Times, China has roughly 6.6 million cows, however, only about 5 in 10,000 such cattle in China are highly productive. According to Jin Yaping, this new cloning method means, that people can preserve the genes of these super cows in a timely manner and these cows can provide an excellent resource for future breeding. Holy Cow! China clones three 'Super Cows' to produce milk by the gallons

<ul><li><keyword id="43853" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-military">Indian military</keyword> has decided to write-off the military farm’s special high-yielding milch cows that cost one lakh rupees, each. </li><li>These cows produce almost double of the national average yield of milk. </li><li>To cut down on expenses, 39 military farms are being shut down. </li></ul>In an attempt to cut down on expenses, the Indian military has decided to write off special <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/no-cash-cow-army-to-sell-bovines-for-token-amount/articleshow/64819204.cms">high-yielding milch cows</a> from their farms for a few thousand rupees. About 39 military farms are being shut down in this exercise and the cows are expected to be transferred to the Centre, state departments and dairy cooperatives. These special <keyword id="6670496" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Frieswal">Frieswal</keyword> cows are developed by cross-breeding Dutch Holstein-Friesian cattle with native Sahiwal cattle and they produce the double of what the national average yield of milk is. Each of these specially-bed cows cost about ₹100,000, however, they will be transferred at a ‘uniform nominal price’ of about ₹1,000 each and that too only if the receiving entities are ready to incur the cost of transportation of these animals. Orders for shutting down of the military farms were issued in late <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/bovine-blues-army-to-give-away-25-200-head-of-cattle-to-icar-state-govts/story-zyyBAsWOJwnFdN4FxvNiVP.html">August 2017</a> with an implementation deadline of three months. However, since the military was unable to find any buyers for these 25,200 cows, the farms could not be closed. The write-off order issued this June is an attempt to do away with the cows after the impasse. The idea of selling the cattle to individual farmers came with the fear that the farmers might end up slaughtering them if they are unable to afford their expensive maintenance. To avoid the grim and wasteful situation, the military chose to transfer the cattle to government departments. The military farms were raised in 1889 to provide fresh milk and dairy products to the troops. However, they have been able to yield only 210 million litres of milk, accounting for just 14% of the total requirement. The rest 86% of the requirement is met by the local dairies. Therefore, a defence ministry panel had recommended shutting down of military farms across the nation and the military is now planning to follow their advice. About seven farms have already been closed and those in Meerut, Ambala, Srinagar, Jhansi and Lucknow are also expected to shut down soon. This decision will save a lot of money, cadre and land and would free up to 57,000 troops from non-combat duties, 20,000 acres of land and about ₹3.34 billion that was allotted to the dairies in the last budget. The resources are expected to be used for other productive military purposes.
