Yes, you read that right — with the help of a pantry staple, scientists are now peering inside the tiny bodies of these rodents without needing to pick up a scalpel.<br /><br />The key ingredient to this astonishing feat is a humble food-safe dye you might have in your snacks right now — <keyword id="23060333" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tartrazine" source="keywords">tartrazine</keyword>. This bright yellow-orange colourant, often found in desserts, candy, and even soft drinks, has now moonlighted as a tool for making mouse <keyword id="19983575" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="skin" source="keywords">skin</keyword> <keyword id="20732164" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="see-through" source="keywords">see-through</keyword>.<br /><br />Here’s how it works: normally, our skin — like that of mice — is packed with proteins, fats, and liquids. The scientists could watch muscles in the gut contract and the abdomen rise and fall as the heart beats.<br /><br />The best part is the fact that the effect is completely reversible! <ul class="summary-list"><li>Warning: There are some spoilers ahead for Disney's "Pinocchio" remake, which is now on Disney+.</li><li>Some changes enhance the experience of watching the original. Others will confuse and baffle fans.</li></ul><p><a href="https://insider.com/category/disney">Disney's</a> live-action and CGI remake of "<a href="https://insider.com/category/pinocchio">Pinocchio</a>" is finally streaming on Disney+ and while it makes some vast improvements to problematic scenes and material in the original 1940 film, holy smoke-io, it adds almost as many unnecessary and frustratingly bonkers new changes. </p><p>Robert Zemeckis ("Back to the Future") directs the update to the classic in which toymaker Geppeto's (Tom Hanks) beloved wooden puppet, Pinocchio (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth), comes to life after wishing upon a star for his marionette to become a real boy. </p><p>Except here, Geppetto doesn't wish for Pinocchio to come to life. Strangely, the audience never gets to hear Geppetto's exact wish — what the entire original movie is based around — though it's heavily hinted it has to do with a tragic loss.</p><p>The tweak to the iconic moment is one of a few odd changes to the original animated tale that may have fans wondering why the Mouse continues to rework Walt Disney's classics in a mostly paint-by-numbers fashion for a new generation. </p><p>The result is an at times enjoyable, but bloated remake filled with unnecessary new characters, changes, and new songs that aren't worth the effort. One change in particular regarding a major character will likely upset fans. </p><h2><strong>The sequel makes some necessary updates to controversial material in the 1940 film</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Pleasure Island in Pinocchio remake" height="1541" width="2858" msid="94085082" hostid="261"></div><p>The original film contains many overt references to smoking and drinking. In the original, Geppetto smokes a pipe, "Honest" John the fox smokes a cigar throughout the film, and small boys, including Pinocchio, imbibe copious amounts of beer and smoke after they're kidnapped by the Coachman and sent to a place called Pleasure Island where boys are turned into donkeys.</p><p>Though all traces of alcohol, cigars, and a Native American stereotype are stripped from the update, one of the film's biggest surprises is that the controversial isle exists in the new film with the same name. Instead of a run-down backlot destination, Pleasure Island's been transformed into a theme park, a la Disneyland, that offers root beer instead of alcohol.</p><p>The film also nixes a poorly-aged tavern scene that makes the Coachman seem like a sexual predator collecting, as he describes them in the original film, "stupid little boys" off the street in exchange for cash. </p><p>The update provides a more relevant explanation for the disappearance of young kids.</p><p>Whereas in the past, Pleasure Island seemed like a hidden secret, here, it's hinted that it's every parent's worst nightmare for their child — regardless of gender — to be scooped up by the Coachman (Luke Evans).</p><p>Once Geppetto learns Pinocchio has been taken to the isle, he sets off for the location, making his trip out to sea in the film's third act less random than in the original film. </p><div type="image" title="Geppetto in Pinocchio" height="1524" width="2818" msid="94085083" hostid="261"></div><p>The film's strongest fix involves giving a tragic backstory to Geppetto building Pinocchio, making it way less creepy that an old, lonely man who wants a wooden marionette to turn into a young boy. The film could've even benefited from exploring more of Geppetto's somber backstory.</p><p>Since the remake expands on the original well in places, it's frustrating that the film absolutely drops the ball with other unnecessary and head-scratching additions. </p><h2><strong>Massive changes and bonkers story additions ultimately weigh 'Pinocchio' down</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Pinocchio discovers poop" height="1522" width="2354" msid="94085085" hostid="261"></div><p>Early in the film, Pinocchio comes across a giant pile of poop on his way to school.</p><p>He bends down to smell and inspect it before wondering aloud if he'll learn what it is at school. The nearly 30-second scene is so strange and irrelevant that you'll likely wonder if you're watching Disney's "Pinocchio" or a parody of the film.</p><div type="image" title="Pinocchio with poop" height="1213" width="1200" msid="94085308" hostid="261" sizebytes="115960"></div><p>Unfortunately, it's not the film's weirdest moment. Late in the film, "Pinocchio" introduces strange smoke creatures named vapor monsters to help export donkeys from Pleasure Island for the Coachman. The red-eyed monsters, who simply could've appeared as human lackeys, are never explained. </p><p>Additionally, the film makes a massive change to the film's antagonist Monstro, who is no longer a whale but a giant sea monster, which is sure to confuse and draw the ire of some Disney fans.</p><p>Just when you think the surprises are over, the film delivers a completely different, ambiguous ending from the original. While it may confuse and upset some, bigger Disney fans will instantly recognize that the remake restores the animated film's alternate ending. (Storyboards for the ending can be accessed via Disney+ under extras for the 1940 edition of "Pinocchio").</p><p>At least Tom Hanks is in the movie, right? Eh.</p><div type="image" title="Tom Hanks as Geppetto in Pinocchio" height="3888" width="7373" msid="94085087" hostid="261"></div><p>While Hanks delivered a superb performance earlier this year in "Elvis" with a strange accent, the Academy Award winner seems to phone it in at times, here.</p><p>You're brought out of his performance at times when Geppetto mysteriously loses his accent and delivers lines sounding like himself before the accent returns. It's as if Hanks did this role as a favor to Zemeckis who he'll be <a href="https://deadline.com/2022/02/forrest-gump-trio-tom-hanks-robert-zemeckis-eric-roth-team-on-here-graphic-novel-adaptation-1234956407/">reteaming with for an adaptation of the graphic novel "Here."</a></p><p>Instead, it's Keegan-Michael Key who surprisingly gives the film's best performance as Honest John, who tricks Pinocchio into becoming an actor. Key's boisterous, expressive scenes are some of the film's most lively and captivating. He should've had a larger role in the film.</p><div type="image" title="Keegan-Michael Key as &quot;Honest&quot; John in Pinocchio" height="1537" width="2783" msid="94085089" hostid="261"></div><p>A close runner-up is Gordon-Levitt's Jiminy Crickett who is far more humble than in the original film. </p><p>Instead of giving up as Pinocchio's conscience at any chance he gets, he's committed to the cause. In one of the film's best moments, the cricket delivers one clever (albeit obvious) line of dialogue that has great payoff later. The film also smartly adds a little chirp to Jiminy while he moves to make the character more authentic.</p><h2><strong>The new songs aren't worth your time</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Luke Evans in Pinocchio" height="1528" width="2817" msid="94085090" hostid="261"></div><p>None of the film's four new original songs are worth a listen. Hanks clunkily talk-sings through "When He Was Here With Me" and "Pinocchio, Pinocchio." Evans sings a terribly painful number on peer pressure late in the film. (To his credit, Evans is fully committed to his role as the eccentric leader of Pleasure Island.)</p><p>Tony winner Cynthia Erivo, who plays the Blue Fairy in the remake, delivers the best song performance of the film, singing "When You Wish Upon a Star." Unfortunately, the film does her dirty by only having her appear once in an opening scene despite the Blue Fairy appearing several times throughout the animated picture.</p><div type="image" title="The Blue Fairy in Pinocchio" height="2160" width="3840" msid="94085092" hostid="261"></div><p>Despite Erivo's brief screen time, the film attempts to include more female characters to help balance the very male-heavy original film, with the addition of two friends for Pinocchio in Fabiana (Kyanne Lamaya), a disabled girl, and her marionette Sabina.</p><p>Though Fabiana gets the film's second-best song, a touching number called "I Will Always Dance," there's little point to her role unless Disney plans to give the character and her marionette a Disney+ spinoff series.</p><h2>We did not need a 'Pinocchio' remake</h2><div type="image" title="Pinocchio live action / CGI remake" height="2160" width="3840" msid="94085093" hostid="261"></div><p>The "Pinocchio" remake had the potential to be decent, but it's as if someone kept taking a brush to an already finished piece of art until it was worse off. </p><p>If you're a Disney fan, it's a perfectly fine watch with some awful and unintentionally funny moments: At one point, Geppetto lobs a piece of wood at Pinoke, striking him square in the head, making a hollow clunk sound.</p><p>The remake will be appreciated most by those who rewatch the original film first before diving into the 2022 movie, which shouldn't be the case. You should be able to appreciate it as a standalone.</p><p>But so many specific nods and slight tweaks to the original may go undetected by those who are unfamiliar with the 1940 movie that it feels like imperative viewing beforehand — which sucks because the original has many cringeworthy moments that we're better off leaving in the '40s. </p><p>Ultimately, there are some Disney classics that don't need a remake. "Pinocchio" is one of them.</p><h2><strong>Grade:</strong> C</h2>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>People are reexamining the treatment of <keyword id="14710" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Britney-spears">Britney Spears</keyword> after a new documentary.</li><li>But women who grew up with Spears aren't satisfied by this latest societal reckoning.</li><li>Now millennials are in positions of power and we're seeing a new era of feminist storytelling.</li></ul><p>My Twitter feed was suddenly flooded last week, each short message highlighting the <a href="https://www.insider.com/inside-britney-spears-conservatorship-freebritney-movement-2020-12">mistreatment of Britney Spears</a>.</p><p>I felt a tightening in myself; a hesitance to reopen a wound that I had long ago buried somewhere between my heart and my gut. I couldn't immediately bring myself to watch "Framing Britney Spears," the New York Times documentary about the pop singer and a culture that's steeped in sexism, knowing that I had lived through a version of it already as a young woman.</p><p>Now <a href="https://www.insider.com/justin-timberlake-britney-spears-apology-janet-jackson-2021-2">Justin Timberlake has apologized</a> to Spears and Janet Jackson; Pitbull is yelling "Free Britney!" at a press event; and <a href="https://www.insider.com/framing-britney-spears-documentary-justin-timberlake-backlash-2021-2">"I Am Sorry Britney" trended</a> on Twitter the weekend of the doc's premiere.</p><p>But those of us, especially women, who grew up idolizing Spears and witnessed her public destruction throughout our teenage years, are far from satisfied.</p><p>It's no longer "cool" to mock Spears or her legion of one-time tween fans. We have years of societal awareness, feminist activism such as the #MeToo movement, and documentaries like the recent "Framing Britney Spears" to thank for that. But when it comes to moving forward, there's simply too many hollow admissions of culpability and not enough unpacking of exactly how we got to this point. </p><p>If we zoom in on Spears' Hollywood career, it's not hard to draw a line between misogynistic teen movie franchises like "American Pie," which captured how society treated young girls at the time, and the scornful treatment of Spears along with her 2002 movie "Crossroads," the first screenplay written by Shonda Rhimes.</p><h2>In the early 2000s, casual <keyword id="1420030" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Misogyny">misogyny</keyword> was baked into our culture. Nowhere is that more apparent than 'American Pie.'</h2><div type="image" title="American Pie, Jim" height="615" width="820" msid="81074407" hostid="261"></div><p>"American Pie," the 1999 raunchy R-rated teen movie, felt like an inescapable rite of passage for kids like me who entered high school in the early 2000s. You'd have thought that movie reinvented comedy <em>and </em>sex at the same time, the way it was praised to high hell.</p><p>The movie follows four high school boys, who make a pact to lose their virginity by the end of their senior year with the rule that it has to be "valid, consensual sex - no prostitutes."</p><p>But the only takeaway to be found in "American Pie" (other than the apparent timelessness of potty humor) is that teenage boys are not only desperate for sex, but that they're owed that sex from hesitant young women, who need to be coerced or tricked into it.</p><p>The only two girls in the movie who are overly enthusiastic about sex (Alyson Hannigan and Natasha Lyonne's characters) are portrayed as annoying or undesirable - and certainly not the first choice for any of the boys' pursuits.</p><p>"American Pie" is credited with reviving the sex-comedy genre, which you can see reflected in subsequent popular movies like "EuroTrip," "Van Wilder," and to a less-harmful degree in 2007's "Superbad."</p><p>The same year "American Pie" premiered, spawning its own mega-franchise of movies, Spears' first album "...Baby One More Time" debuted. She was only 18 years old, but <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20131029201446/http://www.nme.com/reviews/britney-spears/853">one male critic at the time</a> was happy to label the former "Mickey Mouse Club" star's aesthetic as "kindergarten cutesiepie cack" while telling her to "grow up, girl. Quick!"</p><p>Another male critic called the music studio where "...Baby One More Time" was recorded <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20131211231544/http://www.rollingstone.com/music/albumreviews/baby-one-more-time-20030113">a "Lolita-pop doll house,"</a> and said the hit single was good at "effectively transforming this ex-Mouseketeer born in a tiny Louisiana town into a growling jailbait dynamo."</p><p>And that's just a peek into the treatment of Spears' music. When she dared to dip a toe into Hollywood, the scorn only deepened.</p><h2>'Crossroads' was a coming-of-age movie about female friendship, at a time when Spears was also growing into her own. Critics hated it.</h2><div type="image" title="crossroads3" height="758" width="1010" msid="81074411" hostid="261"></div><p>"Crossroads" premiered in 2002, just a few years after "American Pie." The movie followed Spears' character, Lucy, as she rekindled childhood friendships, fell in love, and had sex for the first time along with writing and performing music.</p><p>"Crossroads" was almost immediately banished to the discount-DVD bin, dismissed by critics and audiences alike as cheesy and hollow.</p><p>One male movie critic, Mick LaSalle, happened to <a href="https://www.sfgate.com/movies/article/A-Juicy-American-Pie-Teen-comedy-goes-beyond-2919967.php">review both "American Pie" in 1999</a> and then <a href="https://www.sfgate.com/movies/article/FILM-CLIPS-Also-opening-today-2872903.php">"Crossroads" in 2002</a>.</p><p>LaSalle revered the former for its "warm spirit and respect for the characters." He found one scene, where Jason Biggs' character secretly films a foreign exchange student undressing in his room, and intentionally broadcasting the live feed to his friends (who in turn accidentally send the link to their entire student body) as "a long, delightful and embarrassing scene."</p><p>There's no mention in the review of the young woman being violated, nor of the fact that she is somehow the sole person punished for the "event" when she's sent back to Europe offscreen.</p><div type="image" title="Mimi Kit Lucy Ben in car Crossroads 2002 movie Britney Spears MTV  Films Paramount Pictures " height="1094" width="1458" msid="81074416" hostid="261"></div>But LaSalle <a href="https://www.sfgate.com/movies/article/FILM-CLIPS-Also-opening-today-2872903.php">found "Crossroads" fascinating</a>, not for its exploration of teenage girlhood and sex, but because "there has always been a disconnect between Spears' offstage and onstage personae. When not singing, she cultivates the image of a scantily clad but chaste young lady. But onstage she acts like every sailor's pal when the fleet's in."<p>The Razzies, a parody awards show that honors the "worst" in cinema, introduced a new category called the "Most Flatulent Teen-Targeted Movie" and promptly nominated "Crossroads" for the trophy. Spears went on to win the "Worst Actress" award that year. Managing to become even more tone-deaf in retrospect, the Razzies also nominated Rhimes for worst screenplay, failing to see the <a href="https://www.insider.com/bridgerton-details-you-missed-easter-eggs-season-one-2020-12">"Bridgerton" executive producer</a> and "Grey's Anatomy" creator's trademark shine in her first-ever movie script. </p><p>Although the <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1112549-crossroads">Rotten Tomatoes score for "Crossroads"</a> sits depressingly low, after rewatching it a couple of years ago when it was available online (now you can't find the movie available to rent or stream on any major platform) I found it holds up against my glowing memories.</p><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ee6yIS-0NrI" frameborder="0"></iframe><p>The movie still shimmers with that Rhimes quality that's also apparent in her later works, such as "Grey's," "How To Get Away with Murder" and "Scandal." Like all of Rhimes' writing, "Crossroads" presents women's friendships and ambitions as meaningful and worthy of the Hollywood treatment.</p><p>"Crossroads" was paired with Spears' 2001 hit, "Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman," a ballad in which Spears quite literally asks for people to leave her alone while she tries to sort out what growing up in the spotlight means. Part of the lyrics reads, "All I need is time/A moment that is mine/While I'm in between."</p><p>In the movie, Spear's character reads the lyrics aloud to the man she's falling in love with. By the end of the film, she's singing it on stage during an audition for a record company, announcing herself as an adult ready to take on the world in her own way and in her own time. </p><h2>Not enough people were listening to Spears then, but now millennials are coming into their own power and the tides are shifting.</h2><div type="image" title="britney spears snake dance" height="1451" width="1935" msid="81074422" hostid="261"></div><p>For many millennials, Spears was a beacon of unattainable cool. Listening to her albums made us feel powerful, with anthems like "Stronger" and "Overprotected" telling us we could forge our own paths. </p><p>Imagine the confusion and hurt so many young people felt when we saw the world tearing Spears down, saying that she wasn't enough and she was too much all at once.</p><p>Now Spears is <a href="https://www.insider.com/britney-spears-mental-health-jokes-today-shed-have-it-worse-2021-2">no longer the butt of the joke</a>, nor is she in the center of a media circus 24-7. The world has largely settled into the realization that what was happening to Spears at such a young age was anything but normal. We saw that through paparazzi photos of her, showing <a href="https://www.insider.com/britney-spears-mental-health-jokes-today-shed-have-it-worse-2021-2">her mental health issues</a>, and later the <a href="https://www.insider.com/britney-spears-father-coconservator-estate-judge-ruling-2021-2">conservatory legal situation</a> with her father, which grants him and a lawyer control over the singer's financial and personal assets.</p><p>What's different now is that Gen-Xers and millennials, who grew up with Spears, "Crossroads," and "American Pie" are now in positions of power to speak out against misogynistic culture and how it bleeds into what we consume. </p><p>In the days after "Framing Britney Spears" premiered, when Twitter was suddenly alight with compassion for the pop star, I saw a lot of statements akin to "we were all complicit" coming from people who were much older than me in the early 2000s.</p><div type="image" title="britney spears" height="603" width="804" msid="81074428" hostid="261"></div>That kind of passive admission of wrongdoing is frankly insulting to those of us who were literal children at the time <em>and</em> knew better than to participate in Spears' tear down. It's even more insulting to hear the "we were all complicit" line from people who absolutely had the capacity to know the damage they were inflicting and indulged in it anyway.  <p>I'm not a girl anymore and neither are the then-young Spears' fans who knew the public's treatment of her was wrong. Now we're fighting for our voices to be heard, whether its with bylines of our own at the same publications that once gleefully bashed Spears, or in the same Hollywood systems that once glorified "American Pie."</p><p>I'm particularly grateful for creators like Issa Rae, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Michaela Coel, and Emerald Fennell, millennial storytellers who are writing incredibly rich, funny, creative and thoughtful TV shows and movies that reflect the complicated internal lives of women, particularly in the face of continual sexism and racism. </p><p>In an <a href="https://www.vulture.com/2021/01/promising-young-woman-ending-emerald-fennell-explains.html">interview with Vulture's Angelica Jade Bastién</a>, Fennell (the writer-director of 2020's "Promising Young Woman," which centers on woman who pretends to be drunk only to lure men home with her) spoke about her obsession with turning the idea of being feminine on its head.</p><p>"This idea that just because you love Britney Spears doesn't mean you couldn't cut someone's face off," she said. "Just because you wear pink doesn't mean you're not filled with murderous rage."</p><p>Our rage is ready for its time in the spotlight. The reckoning is only just getting started.</p>

The robot can travel through the body's blood stream, hunting for tumors, without doing any harm to healthy cells along the way.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>The team's research, released Monday in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/nbt.4071">Nature</a>, comes after five years of development. </span></p><p><span>In that time, the molecular chemists have built a folding, origami-inspired, DNA-based system that&#xa0;carries blood-clot causing enzymes on the inside, shielded outside by tumor-hunting pieces of DNA. They slip this tiny machine into the body of a mouse or pig via intravenous (IV) injection. </span></p><p><span>When the cancer-sniffing, cylindrical robot floats its way to the site of a tumor, the otherwise harmless machine immediately&#xa0;</span>attacks, unfurling its cancer-finding shell and dumping out a potent enzyme called thrombin. Then the thrombin gets to work, making a blood clot, and suffocating the tumor.</p><p>The process, which takes place at a scale smaller than 1/1,000th of a human hair, starts out like this:</p><p>&#xa0;</p><p>As you can see in the animation above from <a href="https://asunow.asu.edu/20180212-discoveries-cancer-fighting-nanorobots-seek-and-destroy-tumors">Arizona State University</a>, it takes just two to four of those invisible thrombin molecules, packed inside a hollow DNA tube, to create the killer nanorobot. Their clot blocks off the supply of fresh blood to the tumor, and causes visible tissue damage in 24 hours time.&#xa0;</p><p>That kind of blockage <span>can eventually "lead to tissue death and shrink the tumor," Baoquan Ding, a Chinese co-author on the paper, said in a statement.</span></p><p><span>Watch the thrombin enzyme completely close off this blood vessel wall, suffocating the cancerous tumor on the other side.&#xa0;</span></p><p>&#xa0;</p><p><span>In the lab, the researchers have tried this technique out on dozens of mice and at least nine miniature pigs, including animals who'd been injected with breast, lung, skin and ovarian cancers. The average survival times of their mice doubled. And in at least three mouse skin cancer cases, the treatment lead to complete tumor regression.</span></p><p>"T<span>his technology is a strategy that can be used for many types of cancer, since all solid tumor-feeding blood vessels are essentially the same," DNA origami expert Hao Yan, who co-authored the study, said <a href="https://asunow.asu.edu/20180212-discoveries-cancer-fighting-nanorobots-seek-and-destroy-tumors">in a statement</a>.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>But there's still one major hurdle for the tiny tech to clear: scientists haven't tested it out in humans.</span></p><p>Origami has helped <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> and technology in innumerable ways: laying the foundation for how we create life-saving airbag folds, helping <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/origami-inspired-surgical-tools-2016-3">NASA send solar panels into space</a>, and building <a href="https://www.mddionline.com/origami-prototype-stent">prototype collapsible stainless steel heart stents</a>, to name just a few.
