Finish the holy bath with pure water. Offer flowers and mantras Decorate the idols and kalash with flowers and tilak. Chant the names of Ganesh and Lakshmi and offer flowers at the altar. But revellers who painted the town red and want more party time need not lose heart. Officially, the year has taken off on January 1, but the regional variants of the New Year’s Day still prevail in a country like India – home to a colourful mélange of cultures and traditions. So we are yet to experience a spate of <keyword id="471694" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="New-Year-festivities">New Year festivities</keyword>, celebrated from <keyword id="6354495" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="kashmir">Kashmir</keyword> to Kanyakumari, from the <keyword id="53478" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="North-East">north-east</keyword> to the western coast. 
 Interestingly, both the Gregorian calendar (introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582) and the previous <keyword id="89476" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Julian-calendar">Julian calendar</keyword> (first implemented by Julius Caesar in 46 BC) kick off on the same day – January 1. The Romans originally dedicated the first day of the year to Janus, the god of gates, doors and beginnings, and January, the first month of the year, was named after him. Later on, most nations in Western Europe officially started the New Year from January 1. <keyword id="1296432" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chaitti">Chaitti</keyword> – <keyword id="6358126" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Himachal-Pradesh">Himachal Pradesh</keyword>: In this hill state, the New Year’s Day is celebrated on the first day of Chaitra according to the <keyword id="1998446" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vikrami-calendar">Vikrami calendar</keyword> and festivals such as <keyword id="48284" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="navratri">Navratri</keyword> and <keyword id="1998448" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ralli-Puja">Ralli Puja</keyword> are held throughout the month in honour of Goddess Durga/Bhagwati. The month-long Ralli Puja ends in the marriage of Lord Shiva and the goddess as spinsters seek blessings of the divine duo for a spouse like Lord Shiva.

Traditionally held on the first day of Baishakh (mid-April), a sweet drink called <keyword id="1998477" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pana">Pana</keyword> is made using fruits, card, milk, water and sugar/jaggery and bestowed as <keyword id="1998478" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Puja-offering">puja offering</keyword>. People also drink Pana and water is offered to all, even to birds and animals, for a month. As in all other states, pujas are offered to ensure a prosperous year ahead; <keyword id="974604" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="festive-food">festive food</keyword> such as pitha and laru is made and shared, and young people get together to choose their life partners. Military dimension to the Sikh community During his accession ceremony, Guru Hargobind wore two swords indicating his spiritual and temporal authority that were called as Piri and Miri respectively. Due to the execution of his father Guru Arjun by Jahangir, Guru Hargobind Singh gave a military dimension to the Sikh religion. He enjoined the Sikhs to carry arms and fight with the enemies. Guru Hargobind was imprisoned In the pretext that the fine imposed on his father was not paid, Guru Hargobind was arrested and imprisoned in the Gwalior Fort by Jahangir. Around 1619, Guru Hargobind was released from jail after about twelve years of imprisonment along with 52 Hindu kings of other states. The Sikh tradition says Guru Gobind was released on Diwali and this important event came to be celebrated as Bandi Chhor Diwas. Celebration at the Bandi Chor Gurudwara There is a Sikh temple built on the site of Guru Hargobind’s imprisonment. This temple is called as Bandi Chhor Gurdwara. Sawan 2024: Dates, somwar calendar, significance and rituals practised during Sawan

Ayodhya (UP), Deepak Pandey, a daily wager in Ayodhya, was planning to move to another city searching for a job a few years ago. He now plans to buy land in this Uttar Pradesh district and build a new home. Pandey lauds Lord <keyword id="19902033" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ram" source="keywords">Ram</keyword> for the change in his financial situation that has been boosted further following the consecration ceremony of the Ram temple here last month. The 48-year-old lives in a three-room house in one of the alleys leading up to <keyword id="19948479" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ram-path" source="keywords">Ram Path</keyword>, the main route for the devotees visiting the temple. "I used to rent out one of the rooms for Rs 3,000 per month. Since the consecration ceremony, I have been renting it out for the same amount per day," Pandey said, adding that he has hosted a new guest almost every day this month. Since the consecration ceremony on January 22, almost one lakh devotees have been visiting this Hindu holy town in Uttar Pradesh on a daily basis, according to the local administration. A huge number of these devotees come from outside the state. Like Pandey, the owners of almost every house in the alley have refurbished at least one room in their houses to offer to tourists as a homestay facility. Pramesh Pandey stands at the entrance of an alley, asking devotees if they need a room to stay. "I have six rooms in three-four different buildings. I offer a room for Rs 1,400 to Rs 3,000 per day, depending on the rush of visitors," he said. Most of the residents of the alley do odd jobs or sell items that the devotees offer at the temple. "Lord Ram is showering his blessings on us. The god comes here in the form of devotees and helps us lead a better life," said <keyword id="20682242" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jaswanti-sharma" source="keywords">Jaswanti Sharma</keyword>, a resident of another alley who runs a shop selling pictures of Ram and other souvenirs. "The number of people visiting the town has gone up substantially since the new temple was opened. This has helped my business," she said. Many shop owners are expanding their shops by adding a new floor above the existing structures. Prabhat Gupta, who runs a food joint, is busy handing out plates of hot dosas to people. He says "Jai Shri Ram" every time he hands over a plate to a customer. "The construction work for another floor has already started. If Lord Ram wishes, we will be able to host more customers once the construction is complete," he says. Apart from eateries and shops selling puja items, offices of travel agencies and shops selling clothes, mobile phone accessories and gift items have started coming up on Ram Path. These include hotels, guesthouses, multi-level car parking facilities and restaurants. Abhay Pratap Shahi, a partner in a Lucknow-based construction firm developing projects in Ayodhya, said, "We are working on two hotels and a shopping mall. The projects began in 2021 and are expected to be completed by 2027." Considering the ongoing development work, the local administration is also assisting the traders. "We are ensuring that the required clearances for construction work are provided in time. The work developing assisting infrastructure, such as wider roads, multi-level parking facilities and other amenities for devotees, are also underway," Ayodhya Commissioner Gaurav Dayal told PTI. "We are hopeful that every devotee coming to Ayodhya, be it by road, rail or air, will get the best-in-class facilities. Most of the work towards achieving this has already been done and the remaining work will be completed in the coming months," Dayal said.

Ahead of the film's release, #BoycottJawan trended on social media for a while with some users calling for the film's boycott because it is distributed by Red Giant Movies in Tamil Nadu. In Noida's Waves theatre, the audience erupted in whistles and cheers every time Shah Rukh made an appearance. In Mumbai, fans queued up in large numbers at the Gaiety Galaxy in Bandra and were seen frantically dancing to drum beats inside a theatre, recalling celebrations seen during festive season. Fans were also seen forming a human pyramid outside a theatre at a 6 am show. There were similar scenes inside a cinema hall in Chennai where fans broke into whistles as the film unspooled in front of them. At Bengaluru's Urvashi Cinema, a huge gathering was seen for the first show of the film. A young woman, who came to watch with her friend, told PTI, "We are very excited. We came here to dance on the movie. I'm a very big Shah Rukh Khan fan, I love him." And in Hyderabad, hundreds of SRK fans gathered at the Devi Theatre, placed large cutouts of the superstar, threw confetti and danced their hearts out before the first show early on Thursday. Many donned SRK's looks from the movie. At Liberty cinema in Delhi's Karol Bagh, some clicked selfies against the film's with its poster. The scene at the single theatre was akin to that of Holi celebrations with many fans donning white and playing with colours as they danced to the film's track outside the theatre. There were also many videos posted on X showing fans dancing near the giant screen when the song "Zinda Banda" came on. "Jawan" is described by makers as a high-octane thriller outlining "the emotional journey of a man who is set to rectify the wrongs in the society". Trade predictions Trade experts are betting big on "Jawan" as they believe the movie will outperform "Pathaan", which had the reported earnings of Rs 1,050 crore. They pegged the opening day figure to be somewhere around Rs 65-70 crore. The film already got a thumbs up from fans as over 7.5 lakh tickets were booked in advance on online ticket booking platform BookMyShow by Tuesday evening. The movie is headed to beat the opening-day figure of Rs 57 crore notched up by 'Pathaan' and touch Rs 70 crore, according to the trade media. Across languages, 'Jawan' is likely to cross Rs 104 crore with Rs 20 crore from the Tamil markets and another Rs 14 crore from the Telugu-speaking universe. It will be interesting to see how much the film collects from the global Tamil audience, which has powered the huge success of Rajanikanth's 'Jailer'. The optimism of the trade media is hinged on the unprecedented advance bookings for 'Jawan'. According to BoxOfficeIndia.com, the figure for these bookings adds up to Rs 55 crore for the weekend, slightly more than what 'Pathaan' made, namely, Rs 54 crore. SRK, therefore, now holds the record of attracting two Rs 25 crore-plus advance bookings in one year. The three major multiplex chains in the country -- PVR, Inox and Cinepolis -- had reported they sold 2.35 million advance tickets within the first three days of the bookings being opened. Part of the celebration involves festival-goers visiting India's rivers, which are held as sacred to Hindus, to bathe and procure holy water. While this has been done for thousands of years, in recent times, India's rivers, such as the large Yamuna (seen above), have become perilous.
