<ul class="summary-list"><li>Ligia Morera, based in Costa Rica, leads virtual tours on the Japanese platform Dokodemo Door Trip.</li><li>She started when travel was halted during the COVID-19 pandemic and she needed a new revenue stream.</li></ul><p>Ligia Morera, 32, lives in San Ramón de Alajuela in the Central Valley of Costa Rica with her husband, Rodrigo Santamaria, 35. She studied tourism at university before working in hotels and travel agencies. Six years ago, she and her husband founded <a href="https://exploretikizia.com/">their own travel-planning business</a>.</p><p>When COVID-19 put international travel on pause — and thus dried up their main source of income — they cast around for other employment, including browsing the freelance marketplace Upwork. That's where they stumbled on the chance to become pioneers in the travel space: virtual-reality tour guides.</p><p>Since November of last year, the couple have been operating as virtual guides via the platform provided by <a href="https://trip.dokodemodoors.com/en/introduction-tdx-vrtour">Dokodemo Door Trip,</a> a subsidiary of the Japanese company Metareal Corporation. Santamaria serves as videographer and editor, while Morera focuses on guiding.</p><p>Their first tour, all shot on Santamaria's GoPro Max 360, features a rare natural phenomenon: turtle nesting on <a href="https://nicoyapeninsula.com/naturereserves/ostional/">Ostional beach in the Nicoya Peninsula</a>. Hundreds, often thousands, of turtles come up by moonlight from the ocean along a 1-mile stretch of beach and then proceed to dig into the black sand and carefully lay a haul of eggs.</p><p>"We prerecorded the turtle nesting together. The biggest one is in October, so we did that in 2021," Morera told Insider. "I play the video, with all the natural sounds as we walk along the beach, and I started telling them about how the turtles lay their eggs." Her guests pay $12 each for a 30-minute tour through this immersive video.</p><p>Morera sees potential in the niche for many reasons, beyond attracting people cautious to leave their homes in the wake of COVID-19. Many travelers are reassessing trips amid a growing awareness of travel's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/workers-want-companies-to-make-business-travel-more-sustainable-2022-5">environmental impact</a> and are looking for more sustainable options. And for businesses, virtual tour guiding may provide an easy new revenue stream that could also add stability in the event of another pandemic or wave of lockdowns.</p><h2><strong>A VR tour guide needs AI software to reach a worldwide audience</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="A woman with a Go Pro" height="667" width="889" msid="96133015" hostid="261" sizebytes="57280"></div><p>Though Dokodemo's platform is available worldwide, Japan has been Morera's main source of clientele so far, she said, thanks mostly to the company's location. Morera is fluent in English and Spanish but doesn't speak a word of Japanese — and that's where Dokodemo can help.</p><p>Dokodemo's parent company is a barely two-year-old artificial-intelligence-based translation firm. "It's designed to break down the so-called language barrier between Japanese businesses and the rest of the world with an AI translation in real time," Stephen Black, the company's guide-support manager — who helps creators ready their videos for use — told Insider. "That AI translation and interaction like that between guides and guests is a big point of what sells the idea." In other words, these VR tours are as much a marketing program for its core business as a standalone revenue stream.</p><p>Black said the firm spent six months or so developing the VR tourism platform and then opened it up for nine months to contributors like Morera. At consumer launch, he said, it had 500 or so individual tours, and it's now close to 1,000. "We paid the guides to create the content, so we own it and can utilize it outside the platform," he added — think the Singapore Tourism Board paying for the right to deploy it in marketing efforts.</p><div type="image" title="A virtual tour in Greece" height="1037" width="1920" msid="96133019" hostid="261" sizebytes="100708"></div><p>Popular tours, he said, are often the most colorful, like a visit to the Holi festival in India, or offer the chance to see well-known locations — Santorini, for instance, has sold well. He added that engagement tended to fall off in tours longer than 30 minutes.</p><p>Any aspiring metaverse travelers who don't own a headset can register and receive a Meta Quest free for a week before choosing whether to buy one from Black's firm. On average, he said, one in five customers opts for this, with Japanese users paying 37,000 yen, or about $271, to rent the hardware. Half the company's active monthly users reside in the country, while most of the rest are elsewhere in Asia. "We're among the biggest sellers of Meta Quest in Japan," he said.</p><h2><strong>A new way to tour guide</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="A shot of a VR tour around turtles" height="562" width="750" msid="96133022" hostid="261" sizebytes="49480"></div><p>Morera has embraced the new medium with gusto. She and her husband have shot and uploaded eight videos from Costa Rica — one is a hummingbird tour, as requested by previous participants — as well as eight in neighboring Panama, where she has family. She's particularly proud of the shoot they planned with the Guna Yala indigenous people, who were marking a festival in Panama. "It's important for your culture to show that," she said, "and now something that happens once a year is available year-round virtually."</p><p>She's also aggressively marketing to audiences beyond Japan via social media and other avenues, like local universities in her country — she just led 30 students around the turtle-hatching event thanks to a directive from their biology professor at the University of Costa Rica. Another source of referrals is other VR tour guides. "There's a community now," she said, "and we support each other, showing how to promote — we can connect as individuals from different countries and background and give each other tips, like a Japanese girl who lived in Belize who helped me out."</p><div type="image" title="Turtles on a beach overhead shot" height="562" width="750" msid="96133024" hostid="261" sizebytes="91974"></div><p>It was up to Morera to choose how much to charge. She's dropped her prices from $15 a person when starting out to $12 a person now — from that, Dokodemo Door Trip takes a 20% handling fee, so her profit is $9.60 a head, or about $300 a month. "It's trial and error," she said. "We just had to see how it went, and it took about six months to decide to charge $12 instead."</p><p>Morera fixes her group sizes at two to 10 people — any bigger, she said, makes it harder for participants to engage and ask questions effectively.</p><p>The biggest issue, she added, is the reliability of broadband locally. "In Costa Rica, sometimes we get little problems with that," she said. Scheduling also presented its challenges. She usually plans for tours to happen on Friday or Saturday nights, Japan time, once every two weeks, as these have proved the most popular periods for bookings.</p><p>"Many of my guests sign up saying they're enjoying their beer in the evening, and they're in a mood for relaxation," she said. "It's better to be learning something than just scrolling through social media. That way they're not only relaxing but learning from other humans around the world."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>People celebrate the <keyword id="6368818" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hindu">Hindu</keyword> holiday of Holi with colorful <keyword id="65546" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="powder">powder</keyword> known as gulal.</li><li>One company in Hathras, <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>, makes over 6,000 tons of gulal every year.</li><li>We went inside the factory churning out powder year-round in the gulal capital of the world.</li></ul><p>Yellow is one of the most popular colors thrown during Holi. Called <em>gulal, </em>the fine powder is made from a mixture of starch and dyes.</p><p>One factory in India, Radha Kishan <keyword id="22510" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="color">Color</keyword> World, produces 2,000 tons of gulal annually. It's based in the northern city of <a href="https://www.assocham.org/newsdetail.php?id=5585">Hathras</a>, where most of the world's gulal comes from. </p><p>We went inside one of the largest manufacturers to see how it's preparing for its first Holi during the pandemic. Ratan Bihari Agrawal and his family are behind <a href="http://www.thecolorpowder.com/contact.htm">Radha Kishan Color World</a>, also known as the <a href="https://rbcolour.com/about.html">Cock Brand</a>.</p><p>"Our business is 80 years old," he told Insider. He and his family have run the company for four generations. One of the main products they produce is gulal, churning out more than 600 pounds of the powder a day. </p><div type="image" title="Employees prepare Holi toys before celebrations begin" height="1080" width="1440" msid="81764091" hostid="261"></div><p>In Hathras, Holi powder production brings in more than <a href="https://www.amarujala.com/uttar-pradesh/hathras/hathras-sanjeevani-could-not-meet-the-budget-for-traditional-industries-of-the-district-hathras-news-ali255185086">30 crore rupees</a>, or over $4 million, each year. There are over a <a href="https://www.patrika.com/hathras-news/color-gulal-of-hathras-will-be-scattered-in-nationwide-festival-holi-6699780/">dozen</a> gulal-making facilities in the city alone. The Cock Brand itself employs almost 100 people to focus on five main processes: packaging, handmade processing, controlling the command center, storage, and gulal drying in nearby fields. The company makes both handmade and machine-processed gulal to keep up with demand.</p><div type="image" title="Woman helping to process pink gulal powder." height="1080" width="1440" msid="81764093" hostid="261"></div><p>The Cock Brand works with hundreds of colors. Each popular Holi color has at least a dozen hues.</p><p>"Imagine life without colors. Imagine life in black and white. It is boring. Colors give you pop," said Manu Garg, Ratan's brother. "Every color tells a story. Red stands for love. Blue is for royalty. Pink [is] for caring and yellow is for happiness," he said. </p><div type="image" title="Starch is mixed with water during handmade processing" height="1080" width="1440" msid="81764094" hostid="261"></div><p>The first part of the process always starts with a starch mixture. Corn starch is the base for the color powder. It's used instead of common bases like talcum because it's less toxic and much lighter.  Then, the mixture goes through a grinder before it's baked in the sunlight.</p><p>While baking is an important step, the city in Uttar Pradesh is prone to rain and even monsoons, which affect when the gulal is dried. In addition, the powder production coincides with the region's farming season. And both factors play a role in how much gulal can be produced before Holi. Ratan recalls times when orders were affected by rain, sometimes losing 60% to 70% of orders.</p><div type="image" title="This process can take a few hours" height="1080" width="1440" msid="81764096" hostid="261"></div><p>To prevent loss, Ratan and Manu invested in a mechanized gulal making process. "Within seconds, it converts pure starch directly into gulal. The machine now works 24 hours a day. We only halt the machine on Sunday for greasing," he said.</p><p>On top of gulal, the company makes over 260 types of gulal-dispensing toys. The Cock Brand sells most of its products straight to businesses, but many gadgets can be found at the Hathras Color Market. Open year-round, it's one of the largest Holi markets in the world.</p><p>Hathras became the gulal hub due to it's proximity with the Braj region, where Holi celebrations last as long as two weeks. In the city, it's used often. "For any happy occasion, gulal is used. When a candidate wins an election, they celebrate it with gulal." Gulal is also a popular prop in Bollywood movies. "Our gulal is used to show celebration, in serials, movies and stories," Ratan said. </p><div type="image" title="There are hundreds of different gulal powders" height="1080" width="1440" msid="81764098" hostid="261"></div><p>The tradition of Holi can be traced back to several Hindu legends about Lord Krishna.</p><p>"When Lord Krishna and Radha Rani play Holi with each other, it shows the emotion of love and compassion," Manu said. </p><p>Depending on the region, Holi can be a multiday festival or an afternoon celebration. The first evening is known as <a href="https://www.india.com/festivals-events/holi-2021-date-when-is-holi-history-and-significance-of-festival-of-colours-4428040/">Chhoti Holi</a>, or small Holi, and usually involves a symbolic bonfire. The second day is when people of all ages wear white and throw colorful powder at one another.</p><p>Last year, Holi fell right before the coronavirus was officially declared a global pandemic. But this year, massive crowds of people are celebrating even as India grapples with another spike.</p><p>Aligarh resident Manpreet Singh said said it was important for the people to come outside this year to celebrate Holi.</p><p>"People were suffocated in their houses," Singh said. "Finally, a festival has arrived, and people have exited their homes and are celebrating it."</p><p>Still, cases are rising. India reported over <a href="https://www.mohfw.gov.in/">68,000</a> new coronavirus infections on March 28 - the highest single day rise so far this year - taking the nationwide tally well over <a href="https://www.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6">11 million</a>. So far, about <a href="https://www.dnaindia.com/india/report-holi-2021-states-and-uts-that-have-banned-celebrations-full-list-here-2883141">a dozen</a> Indian states and territories have banned Holi celebrations. <div type="image" title="Bright red gulal is blended" height="1080" width="1440" msid="81764100" hostid="261"></div></p><p>"COVID has impacted all the industries all over the world. Moreover, our business is a seasonal business," Manu said.</p><p>Sales here declined by almost 10% last year. But the company has hopes for high returns in 2021.</p><p>"We hope that this pandemic ends soon and people can enjoy Holi as it is meant to be," Ratan said. </p>

It officially falls on the day after the full moon, which this year is March 24, but the 2016 celebrations have already begun.</p><p>In addition to heralding the arrival of spring, Holi celebrates the victory of good over evil. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Israelis fled a religious festival in the desert after Palestinian militants invaded it. </li><li>The militant organization Hamas has fired thousands of rockets into Israel in a surprise attack. </li></ul><p>Hundreds of Israelis fled an outdoor festival in the desert in a panic when Palestinian militants invaded it, videos on social media show.</p><p>The attack on the festival came amid a wave of surprise raids by the Palestinian militant group into southern Israel on Saturday.</p><p>One attendee, named Daniel, told the Israeli outlet, Walla!: "We were alerted by a 'red siren' [rocket warning]. Chaos ensued, especially with vehicles trying to exit. Then the gunshots started, and we began to run. We're still hiding and awaiting rescue," <a href="https://www.jpost.com/israel-news/defense-news/article-762057" target="_blank" rel="noopener">per The Jerusalem Post</a>.</p><p><a href="https://twitter.com/jengelmayer/status/1710554304002597322" target="_blank" rel="noopener">One video on X</a> posted by the user @jengelmayer has racked up over 300,000 views and shows a scene of chaos in the desert. Israelis are seen shouting, running, and getting into cars as they attempt to escape the scene. </p><p>The video is captioned: "Palestinian terrorists invaded a festival where hundreds of Israelis were camping out for the Shemini Atzeret holiday. The panic caused by this is evident on the fades [faces] of the civilians being targeted by heavily armed militants. Armed gunmen are infiltrating Israeli communities by crossing the border fence in several locations and gun fights in the streets of town has been reported.</p><p>In a rare statement, Hamas' military commander Mohammed Deif called on Palestinians in Israel and neighboring Arab countries to join the attack, which he has dubbed "Operation Al-Aqsa Storm," per the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/10/07/israel-gaza-rocket-attack-hamas/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Washington Post</a>. Deif admitted that Hamas had already launched over 5,000 rockets into Israel. </p><p>The attack is being considered one of the biggest from Palestinian territory in years, according to the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/live/2023/10/07/world/israel-gaza-attack" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Times</a>.</p><p>The attack comes during the Jewish holy festival of Shemini Atzeret and a day after Israel marked the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War.</p>

The <keyword id="43254" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yogi-Adityanath">Yogi Adityanath</keyword> government in <keyword id="6357713" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uttar-Pradesh">Uttar Pradesh</keyword> has ordered closure of all <keyword id="37180" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="schools">schools</keyword> in view of the surge in number of Covid cases in the state.<br /><br />Classes from 1 to 8 will remain suspended from March 24 to 31 for Holi vacation.<br /><br />All other educational institutions, including schools between Classes 9 and 12, and higher education institutions where examinations are not scheduled, will be closed from March 25 to 31.<br /><br />All examinations of classes 1 to 8 scheduled between March 24 and 31, therefore, have also been postponed.<br /><br />A decision to this effect was taken at a late-night meeting on Monday, chaired by the chief minister.<br /><br />Basic Education Minister Satish Dwivedi said: "All examinations of classes 1 to 8 stand cancelled till further notice. After March 31, depending upon the situation, we will decide whether to promote all students or extend the academic session and hold examinations in state government-run institutions."<br /><br />All other educational institutions where examinations are scheduled between March 25 and March 31, will remain open only for examinations.
