With the Daylight Saving Time delay, Muslims are able to break their fast at around 6 p.m. instead of 7 p.m.But sectors of Lebanon's sizeable Christian minority rejected the move, with the powerful Maronite Church saying it would disregard the "surprising" decision, <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-65079574">per BBC News.</a>Henry Khoury, a Christian politician who is serving as the caretaker justice minister, went one step further, calling for a reversal of the decision, citing the religious divides it is causing in Lebanon, according to The Times of London.<a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-65079574"></a>Jokes about "Muslim time" and "Christian time" are increasingly common in Lebanon, which has grappled with sectarian conflict since a 1958 civil war between Maronite Christians and Muslims, per The AP.Over the weekend several private institutions decided to ignore the delay to daylight savings, including two media outlets — LBCI and MTV — which moved their clocks forward on Sunday, per the BBC.And even one government body shunned its own policy, with the education ministry saying it adopted Daylight Savings Time on Sunday, <a href="https://www.thenationalnews.com/mena/lebanon/2023/03/26/lebanon-wakes-up-to-muslim-and-christian-time-zones/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">per The National.</a>Haruka Naito, an NGO worker living in Beirut, said she was now forced to deal with an unexpected schedule clash. "I had an 8 a.m. appointment and a 9 a.m. class, which will now happen at the same time," she told the AP.The 8 a.m. appointment was with a government agency, which was expected to comply with Mikati's decision, whereas her 9 a.m. Arabic class was with a private institution, which are not bound by the government's policy.Meanwhile, Middle East Airlines, Lebanon's national carrier, has settled on a confusing compromise. According to the BBC, the airline has said its clocks and other devices will stay in winter time, but its schedules will be adjusted.Dan Azzi, a Lebanese economist, summed up the situation in a pithy message on <a href="https://twitter.com/dan_azzi/status/1639942745190957057?s=20">Twitter</a>: "My view is that this whole thing is a Dumb and Dumber movie."

I asked them what they thought.</li></ul>I spent the last couple days at a conference in a fancy resort town with current and former bosses of news organizations. We shared notes. We tried to figure out how to survive a world where AI models are vacuuming up everything we write without giving credit, and Facebook has basically stopped serving news links.Most of the details would bore you.But then, yesterday morning, over coffee and chia seed pudding, I sensed a change in the air. Something had happened.Then I heard someone say, "I couldn't keep reading it. It was like watching a snuff film."A snuff film, of course, is a video where someone is murdered.The victim was CNN chair and CEO, Chris Licht. And the guy who dropped the bomb on him was Tim Alberta of the The Atlantic.The story is called, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2023/06/cnn-ratings-chris-licht-trump/674255/">"INSIDE THE MELTDOWN AT CNN: CEO Chris Licht felt he was on a mission to restore the network's reputation for serious journalism. How did it all go wrong?"</a>I finally read it on the plane home last night, and, uh, yeah, it's brutal.Licht and his senior comms executive Matt Dornic gave Alberta full access – including multiple long, on-the-record interviews with Licht in weird locations, including at the gym while he worked out.You should read the whole thing, but here's that scene:It was 6:07 a.m. and sweat dripped from Licht's nose.He pumped his arms and legs on a machine inside a workout studio two blocks from the Hudson River. Joe Maysonet, a former boxer who wore polka-dot pajama pants, a green oxford shirt, and a peach-colored beanie, stood with his arms crossed, chirping at his client: "Did I say stop? No, I did not!"Three years ago, Licht weighed 226 pounds. Worried that he was losing control of his lifestyle, he went all in. No more breakfast. No drinking during the week. No more carbs or sweets. ("I'm a fucking machine," Licht told me one day, when I asked why he was skipping a meal.) He also found Maysonet, whose gym, J Train, caters to New York's elite—actors, athletes, business tycoons. On this morning, in March 2023, the CNN boss was down to 178 pounds.Licht jumped off the machine. At Maysonet's instruction, he squatted down to grab a long metal pole lying flat on the ground. "Zucker couldn't do this shit," Licht said through clenched teeth, hoisting the pole with a grunt.Yikes. For those who don't know, Jeff Zucker was Licht's predecessor at CNN. That line is brutal. It was probably a joke by Licht. Maybe it was unfair of Alberta to include it. But why did Licht have a reporter with him at the gym? And maybe the joke is a telling one?The whole story portrays Licht as someone who is more obsessed with his predecessor and the way he ran the company than someone with a good or even well-articulated plan for how to lead CNN into the future. It leaves you wondering if Licht actually has a vision or has been handed one by his bosses.Other ugly moments from the story include:<ul><li>Licht trashing his CNN colleagues for the way they reported on COVID.</li><li>A Christmas party in DC where <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cnn-ceo-chris-licht-ignored-staff-party-read-bad-press-2023-6">Licht refused to socialize</a> with colleagues and instead stared at his phone the whole time. "It became so awkward that guests began texting one another, wondering if there was some crisis unfolding with an international bureau. When a pair of them caught a glimpse of Licht's phone, they could see that he was reading a critical story about him in Puck."</li><li>A clear-the-air town hall where he gets irritated with the CNN journalist interviewing him. ("Yeah. At one point, I wanted to just say, 'We're not going to turn into BuzzFeed, okay?'" Licht told Alberta. "But that probably wouldn't have helped.")</li></ul>The big blunder Alberta returns to over and over in the story is the May 10 Trump town hall. In Alberta's depiction, it went so poorly because Licht was unprepared and perhaps had unserious ideas about how to cover Trump.At one moment in the story, months before the town hall, a student asks Licht how he'll guide the network's coverage of a twice-impeached, election-denying, Capitol riot-cheering former president."I am so not concerned about that." Licht says. "You cover him like any other candidate."Then, in cinematic style, Alberta describes a disastrous lead up, night of, and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cnn-ceo-looked-like-survived-wreck-trump-town-hall-report-2023-6">aftermath</a>. Here's Licht pushing to make the town hall "extra Trumpy." There he goes removing anti-Trump pundits from the post-event coverage. And wow, look at him go into "war mode" attacking CNN staff for critical coverage of the evening.<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2023/06/cnn-ratings-chris-licht-trump/674255/">Really, you should go read the whole thing.</a>After I was done with it, I went to Whatsapp and asked a group of people from the conference what they thought. Because they're all in the same industry as Licht and because the conference and its attendee list is off the record, and finally because I wanted the most candid thoughts possible, I promised them all their quotes would be anonymous. But trust me, these are people who run big newsrooms.Here's what they told me …<ul><li>"Licht seems to be suffering the opposite PR problem as Zucker. Zucker had an army of image protectors and broke through them when he wanted to. Licht seems to have no one looking out for him—to tell him how grunting during a workout is, in this moment, going to make him look. He needs a handler — fast."</li><li>"[Licht's] covid comments demonstrate such naïveté and should make us all fear that this man is in charge of the country's largest news organization. Also it's so clear Licht lacks the management experience to steer a behemoth like cnn and he's seeing his task more like running a show than a multi-billion-dollar company. Well that's what it once was. Cnn revenues have now shrunk under his disastrous leadership."</li><li>"Let's get real. The problem isn't Licht, it's his paymasters. The American billionaire class has convinced themselves that the way to save journalism is to make it as bland and as both-sidesy as possible. They chose Licht as their latest champion of harmless vanilla inoffensiveness. The problem is, no one wants vanilla. Not even a tasting spoon of it."</li><li>"You are welcome to use my snuff film line anonymously!"</li><li>"It was doubly shocking to me that they thought Tim Alberta was the best idea for this. The last big piece he did was this <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.politico.com/interactives/2021/magazine-nikki-haleys-choice/">masterful takedown of Nikki Haley</a> that continues to dog and define her. Like Licht she gave him lots of access. Like him (I assume), she came to regret it. She pissed off Trump and anti-Trumpers and made it all worse by trying to go down to Mar A Lago to apologize a week or so later."</li></ul>Another media big wig, but one not at the conference, told me he thinks Licht is "done" at CNN."The way he was painted, whatever support he had left at the company is likely gone."I reached out to CNN's comms boss Matt Dornic to see if he had a reaction to The Atlantic's story. That was Saturday morning, and he didn't respond to a Twitter DM or LinkedIn message before publication time.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>AI hype has been everywhere since OpenAI introduced ChatGPT to the world.</li><li>Gary Marcus doesn't think we should buy the hype.</li></ul>Gary Marcus doesn't consider himself an AI skeptic. Don't let that throw you, though, when he argues that OpenAI could turn out to be as much of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/weworks-nightmare-ipo">a dumpster fire as WeWork.</a>"I actually want AI to succeed, so to call me an AI skeptic as many people do is to miss that I'm not skeptical," Marcus told Business Insider. "I'm skeptical of how we're doing it right now."For <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gary-marcus-google-lamda-artificial-intelligence-media-hype-dead-cat-2022-6">the 54-year-old cognitive scientist and AI researcher</a> based in Vancouver, set to publish a book titled "Taming Silicon Valley" this fall, the AI of "right now" has made it hard for him not to be restless.Since the launch of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-chat-gpt-2023-1">ChatGPT</a>, Marcus has watched as AI fever has swept across the world. That fervor has set OpenAI on a dangerous path that he thinks strays from its original nonprofit mission to build AI that benefits humanity. The euphoria and hype surrounding it have also left it dangerously unchecked in a way that parallels <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wework-cofounder-adam-neumann-on-its-collapse-bankruptcy-2023-11">Adam Neumann's scandal-ridden startup</a>, which has since fallen from grace.<div type="image" title="adam neumann" height="1335" width="2000" msid="111691276" hostid="261" sizebytes="83716"></div>"OpenAI might be the WeWork of AI," Marcus said. "I ran a poll [on X]. More people thought that was plausible than not."At the same time, Marcus has seen large language models (LLMs) — the technology underpinning generative AI tools like ChatGPT — attract billions of dollars amid shaky promises from industry leaders like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman that they might one day guide humanity to the field's holy grail of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-agi-artificial-general-intelligence-explained-2023-5">artificial general intelligence (AGI).</a>Buying all the hype, he estimates, is a huge mistake: "The AI we're using right now has many fundamental problems." OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment from BI.<h2 id="05084798-af8e-4d7f-815f-a0a2f4bd7337">OpenAI's top skeptic</h2><div type="image" title="Gary Marcus has been a vocal critic of OpenAI and the generative AI boom." height="683" width="1024" msid="111691280" hostid="261" sizebytes="22872"></div>Marcus hasn't always felt this distressed about the industry.Just over a year ago, in May 2023, he sat side-by-side with Altman to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-openai-chatgpt-congress-rules-2023-5">address questions from lawmakers on Capitol Hill</a> about the dangers posed by AI. By his own measure, both he and the OpenAI chief agreed that AI was a deeply complex technology that would cause serious societal problems if left unchecked. Its problems, ranging from bias and hallucinations to its potential to warp election outcomes with false information, demanded attention."I do think he was sincere in his concerns," Marcus said, noting that Altman shared the same birthday as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist behind the atomic bomb. "He does not want to cause the destruction of the world."A year on, however, the mood has clearly shifted.While Marcus left Washington last year feeling "mostly impressed" with the ChatGPT boss, a series of developments in and around OpenAI since then have put him on high alert.The most dramatic moment after the Capitol Hill hearing came in November when Altman was fired as OpenAI's CEO. The company's board had concluded that <a target="_blank" href="https://openai.com/index/openai-announces-leadership-transition/">"he was not consistently candid in his communications."</a>One major allegation against Altman was that he tried to persuade board members to push out Helen Toner, a fellow director, after she <a target="_blank" href="https://cset.georgetown.edu/wp-content/uploads/CSET-Decoding-Intentions.pdf">published a research paper</a> criticizing OpenAI's efforts to make AI safe. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-board-member-details-sam-altman-lied-allegation-ousted-2024-5">According to </a>Toner, he also "started lying to other board members" to turn them against her.<div type="image" title="Helen Toner" height="1666" width="2500" msid="111691281" hostid="261" sizebytes="192732"></div>As Marcus recalled, "the world was treating him as a saint" until then. Leaders including France's Emmanuel Macron, India's Narendra Modi, and South Korea's Yoon Suk Yeol offered Altman a statesman-like welcome during <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-world-tour-ai-chatgpt-openai-2023-6">a global tour last year.</a>Though the firing saga stunned Silicon Valley, triggering a mission among key OpenAI backers like Microsoft to reinstall the ousted CEO, Marcus saw signs of inconsistency hiding in plain sight.One example: when Sen. John Kennedy asked Altman if he "makes a lot of money" during last year's hearing, the OpenAI CEO quickly responded that he has "no equity in OpenAI." That was not the clearest answer he could have given.Altman <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/openai-removes-sam-altmans-ownership-its-startup-fund-2024-04-01/">maintained ownership of the OpenAI Startup Fund until March 29</a>, ownership that Toner said the board wasn't originally informed of. Altman also serves as chairman of nuclear fusion startup Helion Energy, and has carved an "opaque investment empire" worth at least $2.8 billion as of earlier this year, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/openai-sam-altman-investments-004fc785">The Wall Street Journal reported this month.</a>With this in mind, Marcus has been hardly surprised as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-mess-concerns-over-nda-safety-sam-altman-2024-6">OpenAI has had drama</a> around inconsistency unfold again.GPT-4o, OpenAI's new model unveiled in May, was criticized by Scarlett Johansson for carrying — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-scarlett-johansson-saga-reveals-a-deeper-problem-with-ai-2024-5">without permission</a> — a voice called Sky that resembled the AI assistant she voiced in the movie "Her." Though Altman later claimed that <a target="_blank" href="https://openai.com/index/how-the-voices-for-chatgpt-were-chosen/">Sky "was never intended to resemble" Johansson's voice</a>, he couldn't help but tweet "her" after the GPT-4o launch event. "He's still saying, well, the resemblance is coincidental," Marcus said. "People are like, 'What am I, stupid?' The reaction right now, I think rightly so, is that he takes us to be fools."OpenAI's safety commitments have been questioned after top safety researchers, including Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike, left last month. Its treatment of employees is also under scrutiny after details emerged about strict clauses that threatened to claw back workers' vested equity if they didn't <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/leaked-docs-openai-pressure-departing-employees-vox-altman-nda-nondisclosure-2024-5">sign non-disparagement agreements.</a><h2 id="adb3659a-9a37-4f1c-b4ed-627d7baf5df3">The generative AI problem</h2>More broadly, Marcus is concerned that a focus on LLM-led generative AI is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/generative-ai-exaggeration-openai-nvidia-microsoft-chatgpt-jobs-investors-markets-2024-3">leading the industry down the wrong path.</a>While he acknowledges that the technology powering ChatGPT has its uses, he doesn't think it'll get humanity toward a form of AI that can rival human intelligence. He points to the "diminishing returns" each successive new AI model has displayed, with performance improvements seemingly becoming smaller each time a new model is introduced."Billions of dollars have been spent on them, and that has starved everything else out," Marcus said. "LLMs are not useless. They can do some things. But they're not actually AGI. They're not trustworthy, they're not reliable."Not everyone agrees with him. In recent months, Marcus has drawn sharp criticism from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-godfather-top-names-possibilities-dangers-openai-chatgpt-list-2023-8">"AI godfathers"</a> including Yann LeCun and Geoffrey Hinton over his views on today's most-hyped technology.Marcus feels he has been pointing out that LLMs are not the path forward to AGI for some time, an idea he thinks the likes of LeCun — Meta's chief AI scientist — have not acknowledged until recently.<div type="image" title="Yann LeCun" height="1650" width="2500" msid="111691283" hostid="261" sizebytes="115896"></div>LeCun has previously suggested "LLMs are an offramp on the path to AGI," but he has also <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/ylecun/status/1642201963688239107">shared the view</a> that "by amplifying human intelligence, AI may cause a new Renaissance, perhaps a new phase of the Enlightenment." In an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ft.com/content/23fab126-f1d3-4add-a457-207a25730ad9">interview with the Financial Times</a> last month, he acknowledged pretty bluntly that LLMs have a "very limited understanding of logic," making them unlikely candidates for AGI.Marcus takes that as a small sign of hope that people are slowly waking up to the limitations of today's AI: "What gives me a little bit of optimism is that people are finally facing reality."His hope now is that Altman can do the same and face the reality of the mess that has passed. His message to the OpenAI chief is that it's not too late to change course: "Return to the mission. Really make OpenAI a force for good."
