"I ran a poll [on X]. More people thought that was plausible than not."At the same time, Marcus has seen large language models (LLMs) — the technology underpinning generative AI tools like ChatGPT — attract billions of dollars amid shaky promises from industry leaders like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman that they might one day guide humanity to the field's holy grail of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-agi-artificial-general-intelligence-explained-2023-5">artificial general intelligence (AGI).</a>Buying all the hype, he estimates, is a huge mistake: "The AI we're using right now has many fundamental problems." By his own measure, both he and the OpenAI chief agreed that AI was a deeply complex technology that would cause serious societal problems if left unchecked. Its problems, ranging from bias and hallucinations to its potential to warp election outcomes with false information, demanded attention."I do think he was sincere in his concerns," Marcus said, noting that Altman shared the same birthday as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist behind the atomic bomb. "He does not want to cause the destruction of the world."A year on, however, the mood has clearly shifted.While Marcus left Washington last year feeling "mostly impressed" with the ChatGPT boss, a series of developments in and around OpenAI since then have put him on high alert.The most dramatic moment after the Capitol Hill hearing came in November when Altman was fired as OpenAI's CEO. Leaders including France's Emmanuel Macron, India's Narendra Modi, and South Korea's Yoon Suk Yeol offered Altman a statesman-like welcome during <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-world-tour-ai-chatgpt-openai-2023-6">a global tour last year.</a>Though the firing saga stunned Silicon Valley, triggering a mission among key OpenAI backers like Microsoft to reinstall the ousted CEO, Marcus saw signs of inconsistency hiding in plain sight.One example: when Sen. John Kennedy asked Altman if he "makes a lot of money" during last year's hearing, the OpenAI CEO quickly responded that he has "no equity in OpenAI." That was not the clearest answer he could have given.Altman <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/openai-removes-sam-altmans-ownership-its-startup-fund-2024-04-01/">maintained ownership of the OpenAI Startup Fund until March 29</a>, ownership that Toner said the board wasn't originally informed of. Altman also serves as chairman of nuclear fusion startup Helion Energy, and has carved an "opaque investment empire" worth at least $2.8 billion as of earlier this year, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/openai-sam-altman-investments-004fc785">The Wall Street Journal reported this month.</a>With this in mind, Marcus has been hardly surprised as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-mess-concerns-over-nda-safety-sam-altman-2024-6">OpenAI has had drama</a> around inconsistency unfold again.GPT-4o, OpenAI's new model unveiled in May, was criticized by Scarlett Johansson for carrying — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-scarlett-johansson-saga-reveals-a-deeper-problem-with-ai-2024-5">without permission</a> — a voice called Sky that resembled the AI assistant she voiced in the movie "Her." Though Altman later claimed that <a target="_blank" href="https://openai.com/index/how-the-voices-for-chatgpt-were-chosen/">Sky "was never intended to resemble" Johansson's voice</a>, he couldn't help but tweet "her" after the GPT-4o launch event. "He's still saying, well, the resemblance is coincidental," Marcus said. "People are like, 'What am I, stupid?' The reaction right now, I think rightly so, is that he takes us to be fools."OpenAI's safety commitments have been questioned after top safety researchers, including Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike, left last month. Its treatment of employees is also under scrutiny after details emerged about strict clauses that threatened to claw back workers' vested equity if they didn't <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/leaked-docs-openai-pressure-departing-employees-vox-altman-nda-nondisclosure-2024-5">sign non-disparagement agreements.</a><h2 id="adb3659a-9a37-4f1c-b4ed-627d7baf5df3">The generative AI problem</h2>More broadly, Marcus is concerned that a focus on LLM-led generative AI is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/generative-ai-exaggeration-openai-nvidia-microsoft-chatgpt-jobs-investors-markets-2024-3">leading the industry down the wrong path.</a>While he acknowledges that the technology powering ChatGPT has its uses, he doesn't think it'll get humanity toward a form of AI that can rival human intelligence. He points to the "diminishing returns" each successive new AI model has displayed, with performance improvements seemingly becoming smaller each time a new model is introduced."Billions of dollars have been spent on them, and that has starved everything else out," Marcus said. "LLMs are not useless. They can do some things. But they're not actually AGI. They're not trustworthy, they're not reliable."Not everyone agrees with him. In an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ft.com/content/23fab126-f1d3-4add-a457-207a25730ad9">interview with the Financial Times</a> last month, he acknowledged pretty bluntly that LLMs have a "very limited understanding of logic," making them unlikely candidates for AGI.Marcus takes that as a small sign of hope that people are slowly waking up to the limitations of today's AI: "What gives me a little bit of optimism is that people are finally facing reality."His hope now is that Altman can do the same and face the reality of the mess that has passed. His message to the OpenAI chief is that it's not too late to change course: "Return to the mission. Really make OpenAI a force for good."

The country, however, doesn't exist.<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0aR2EagjXM" target="_blank" rel="noopener">At a January 12 ceremony,</a> Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and several city officials signed an agreement to become sister cities with the "United States of Kailasa."Two women representing Kailasa, garbed in what appears to be traditional clothing and jewelry, attended the ceremony. One of them gave an eight-minute speech before the city council, thanking Newark for the partnership and speaking of creating an "enlightened Hindu civilization."But Kailasa is the fabrication of Swami Nithyananda, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bengaluru/bengaluru-non-bailable-warrant-against-controversial-godman-nithyananda/articleshow/93665585.cms" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a Hindu guru who fled India in 2019 when he was charged with rape.</a>Nithyananda, a self-styled holy man who titles himself the "Supreme Pontiff of Hinduism," claims to have created Kailasa as a "revival" of a Hindu nation. The BBC reported that he also says he's purchased an island off the coast of Ecuador, though the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-64807659" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ecuadorian government told the outlet it has neither helped him nor given him asylum.</a>Newark's city council, realizing six days after the ceremony that the city was fooled, <a href="https://newark.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=2&amp;clip_id=542&amp;meta_id=441348" target="_blank" rel="noopener">voted on January 18 to rescind its partnership with the faux nation,</a> <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/newark-sister-city-scam-kailasa/">CBS first reported on March 8.</a>The city told CBS in a statement that the signing was a "regrettable incident," but that it "remains committed to partnering with people from diverse cultures in order to enrich each other with connectivity, support, and mutual respect."It added that no money was involved in the signing of the ceremony, per CBS.The Newark City Council did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.<h2>Kailasa appears at United Nations meetings</h2>Meanwhile, the same woman who spoke at the Newark signing appeared twice at United Nations meetings in Geneva in February, claiming to represent Kailasa. Calling herself Vijayapriya Nithyananda, she spoke at a discussion on how women are represented in decision-making systems on February 22, and at another meeting on sustainable development on February 24, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-64807659" target="_blank" rel="noopener">per the BBC.</a>A UN spokesperson told the BBC that her contributions made at the meetings weren't relevant or would be scrapped from consideration.A Twitter account for Kailasa has in the meantime posted multiple photos of its representatives meeting with UN diplomatic staff or ambassadors for various countries. "Since this meeting did not take place with the official representative of Lithuania, it does not represent any national position of Lithuania towards Kailasa," they said.The UN missions for the rest of the above nations did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.Kailasa is signing agreements with cities like Newark and trying to be seen with international officials in a bid to legitimize itself through disinformation, Mohan Dutta, the dean's chair of communication at Massey University in New Zealand, told Insider."What they are doing is taking something that is entirely a falsity, that is non-existent, and materializing it through these performances," said Dutta, who's tracked Kailasa since it was founded in 2019. "It's really powerful and shows how disinformation works."Nithyananda, the organization's founder, has claimed that Kailasa is now issuing tourist visas, has a currency, and has established embassies around the world, though it has no internationally recognized territory, Dutta said.The guru also claims to be able to disprove Einstein's theory of relativity and possess paranormal abilities, Dutta said.Groups like Kailasa that center on a holy man who espouses pseudo-scientific claims are typically motivated either by the monetary gain from donations, or exploit followers through sexual and physical violence, Dutta added..And Newark's failure to spot any warning signs before partnering with Kailasa is particularly worrying, he said."It is flabbergasting that you have bureaucrats and politicians at the local government in a democratic state having failed to do their duty of due diligence," Dutta said.In a statement to Insider, a representative for Kailasa denied the rape accusations against Nithyananda. But what is a coronation, and what can we expect? A coronation is a ritual act bestowing a crown (or similar decorative head-piece) symbolising royal or imperial power. It is usually associated with other important political and religious acts, such as oaths, anointing, enthronement, homage, parades, gift-giving or presentation to the people. These acts will be on display in the coronation of Charles III. Coronations are not necessarily legally required for the exercise of a monarchical office - Charles is already king. Instead, coronations are fundamentally symbolic and ritual. They affirm a social and political structure within the larger political theology of a polity. In <keyword id="28249" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="europe" source="Orion">Europe</keyword>, they have played a pivotal function in formalising the acceptance by clergy, nobles and general populace of a monarch's accession to office. A short history <keyword id="48080" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="crowns" source="Orion">Crowns</keyword> and coronations have ancient origins and were popularised in Europe during the early Middle Ages. Other surviving monarchies have enthronement (such as Japan and Luxembourg) or inauguration (such as Spain and Sweden) ceremonies which are secular or religious in form. Coronations like those still held in England are associated with a biblical theology of kingship. The monarch is given a divine and priestly commissioning like Israelite kings Saul, David and Solomon in the Old Testament. Over time, European coronations shifted from primarily emphasising divine commissioning to responsibilities before the law and to the people. The British coronation retains all these elements. British coronations The coronation of the British monarch is a religious event. It presents the political-theological vision of the British state as a union of nations and peoples under God. This union is celebrated in the coronation ritual, which occurs in the context of a Eucharistic liturgy. <keyword id="2591708" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="eucharist" source="Orion">Eucharist</keyword> is about communion. In this case, God bringing together the monarch and people in commemoration of Jesus' last supper, self-giving death and salvific resurrection. The liturgy comprises six key elements, defined by the Anglican rite as "the recognition, the oath, the anointing, the investiture (which includes the crowning), the enthronement and the homage." Special instruments are used to symbolise the monarch's sacred office. Saint Edward's crown and chair (symbolising the monarch's significance and connection to British and Christian tradition), the sceptre (an ancient biblical symbol of rule), the orb with cross (symbolising the whole world under Christ) and a ring (symbolising the monarch's "marriage" to his or her people, in a way like Christ is said by <keyword id="216800" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="st-paul" source="Orion">St Paul</keyword> to be married to the Church). While all these symbols are important, the anointing of the monarch with holy oil (chrism) is perhaps the most significant moment of the liturgy. This was the one moment not televised during Elizabeth II's coronation service. Like the Eucharist, anointing is an ancient sacramental practice of Christians used in baptism and confirmation. The anointing by the Archbishop fundamentally marks the body of the monarch as a special sign and for a special purpose. Under the traditions of the coronation, the anointing is said to bestow God's grace on the monarch to become a living sign of God's mercy, justice and love in the world. In this, the monarch is not divine or absolute in power, but rather relies on the sovereignty and power of God. As such, God enables the monarch to exercise his or her office in selfless service, duty and love in the manner of Jesus Christ and in relationship with him. Here, the monarch becomes an anointed symbolon (sacrament) who expresses the meaning of life, community and faith in his or her person as a special mediator of Christ. This symbolic power is deep and primal, as was shown in the reverence for Queen Elizabeth II's body at her death. The coronation ritual highlights the Christian-state nexus that remains at the heart of the British polity. An established church seems anachronistic in a secular age and arguably compromises both the church and politics. Nevertheless, despite declining in numbers, Anglicanism provides a common, transcendent frame-of-reference for fundamental values and virtues, in an age struggling with individualism, division and fragmentation. Charles III's coronation Given the importance of tradition for British society, the establishment position of the Church of England and Charles' own personal faith, the rite of coronation will remain broadly the same. As with Elizabeth, the ritual will be Anglican in format, though likely streamlined from what we saw in 1953. We can also expect it will include ecumenical (reflecting other Christian churches) and inter-religious elements, to which Charles and recent British monarchs have become more sensitive. In essence, the coronation will present the vision of a British monarchy representing loving service, loyalty and duty before God, tradition and a diverse people and nation.
