It's the one that resurfaces old photos and posts in an attempt to remind you of good times gone by. The feature doesn't always get it right. And anybody who's ever been through a bad breakup or lost a loved one can see how On This Day might dredge up memories they'd rather not recall. On Friday, Facebook is planning to unveil a couple of new updates aimed at improving the feature.One will automatically gather your recent photos and posts and collect them in monthly or seasonal recaps. The other will provide a little indicator when you've crossed a certain number of friends or reached a certain threshold in likes. But more importantly - and less obviously - the social networking giant has made some changes to On This Day under the hood. The changes are intended to prevent the feature from highlighting painful memories.I spoke to Facebook officials, including On This Day product manager Oren Hod and memory researcher Artie Konrad, about why the social network is so interested in bringing back the good times - and how they're working to shield you from the bad ones. <h2>A gift from Facebook</h2>"We think of [On This Day] as a small gift that we give to people on our platform," Hod said. When you open up Facebook, the company wants to offer you a "delightful" surprise by reminding you of things like a fun outing you had with a friend, your college graduation, or a family reunion. To figure out which events or photos to highlight, Facebook uses a "pretty sophisticated algorithm" to identify the signals that can indicate which memories are good and which are bad. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">FacebookA new feature on Facebook will highlight recent posts from the last month or season.</div></div></div>Some of those signals are pretty straightforward. If you've blocked someone on Facebook, or otherwise gone through what Hod calls the "breakup flow," you probably don't want to see posts from that person. Similarly, if an event or photo involves someone who is now dead and has a memorialized account on the social network, it won't appear in On This Day."We don't want to resurface everything," Hod said.From there, though, it gets more complicated. What happens when good memories go bad?<h2>Finding good memories</h2>There's sort of an art to sifting out good memories, said Konrad, who holds a PhD in using technology to assist memory from UC Santa Cruz. Obviously, Facebook factors in the number of likes and comments a post or photo receives, but there's more to it than that. Over the years, Facebook has learned a lot about the memories people actually like to re-share long after they were originally posted, Konrad said. People don't really like to be reminded of meals they've had, no matter how good they were, for example. But the word "face," as in "I miss your face," is actually a strong indicator that a post or picture is a memory that someone might want to recall. So too are posts or photos that involve family members of particular users.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">FacebookFacebook will alert you when you've hit milestones in terms of number of friends or likes.</div></div></div>Still, not every post that draws a lot of interaction from a Facebook user's friends is one the user will want to see again. A medical emergency may get a lot of comments, including many from family members, but it's not something you'd likely want to relive a year or two later.Facebook has started using its newer "reactions" feature - which allow users to react to posts they love with hearts or to those that make them sad with a sad-faced emoji - to help filter posts. Those with lots of "sad" or "angry" responses get weeded out from On This Day.Still, Konrad said, it's not enough to rely on the algorithm alone. He speaks of "contamination sequences," an academic term for those instances when a good memory becomes a bad one. For humans, it's obvious that people wouldn't want to be reminded of such moments. But it's not so obvious to Facebook's algorithm."There's no way for Facebook to know that isn't a happy memory anymore," Konrad said.That's why it's so important for Facebook to offer tools that allow users to customize the feature, he said. The algorithm can do a better job of filtering out painful memories, but only after getting some human guidance that lets it know to avoid certain people or topics. Users will now be able to to block certain dates or people from appearing in their flashbacks.In the meantime, Hod wants users to know that Facebook is reading its feedback and working to further minimize the number of bad memories that On This Day might dredge up. Doctor couple tests positive after receiving two doses of COVID-19 vaccine in Lucknow

<ul><li>The Ministry of External Affairs every year organises internship opportunities of six months in two terms.</li><li>Due to COVID-19 pandemic, the online application for Term 2 has not opened yet, and the ministry will soon announce the dates.</li><li>The ministry will select 30 interns with a monthly stipend of ₹10,000 per month.</li></ul>The Ministry of External Affairs (<keyword id="6358274" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MEA" source="Orion">MEA</keyword>) every year organises an internship opportunity for budding scholars to familiarise themselves with the process of formulation of foreign policy and its implementation by the Government of India. The duration of the internship is six months offered in two terms -- Term 1 (January to June) and Term 2 (July to December). Due to COVID-19 pandemic, the online application for Term 2 has not opened yet, and the ministry will soon announce the dates. Interested candidates can keep a check on their <a href="https://www.internship.mea.gov.in/">official website</a>. The ministry will select 30 interns and they shall report to, work under close supervision of the concerned head of division (HOD). They may be required to conduct research, write reports, analyse evolving developments, or carry out any other task entrusted to them by the HOD. All the interns will get a monthly stipend of ₹10,000 per month. Candidates will have to report to the Delhi office during the course of their internship. The ministry will bear the travel cost for outstation candidates who will have to fly to Delhi from their home state. Eligibility criteria for the internship — 1. All the candidates should be an Indian citizen. 2. The maximum age limit for the candidates is 25 years as on December 31, of the year of the internship. 3. Candidates should have a minimum educational qualification of a graduate degree from a recognised university. 4. Candidates belonging to these states are only eligible for the opportunity — Term 1 — Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andaman &amp; Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Delhi. Term 2 — Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, Puducherry. 5. 30%-50% seats are reserved for women candidates. A 60-year-old woman, who was declared brain dead after suffering an intracranial hemorrhage, gave new lease of life to at least four persons after her family members agreed to organ donation at Gurugram's <keyword id="167599" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="paras-hospital" source="Orion">Paras Hospital</keyword>, an official said on Tuesday. The woman was admitted to the hospital on July 7 and the doctors declared her brain dead on July 10. The same day her family members gave nod for organ donation, hoping she would still live through her organs. Once the family officially consented to donate her organs - both her kidneys and eyes were allotted by the <keyword id="2831643" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="national-organ-and-tissue-transplant-organisation" source="Orion">National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation</keyword> (NOTTO). One of her kidneys was given to a 42-year-old male patient at the same hospital, while the other one was donated to a 17-year-old female patient at <keyword id="1981226" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="asian-hospital" source="Orion">Asian Hospital</keyword> in Faridabad. Brain-dead woman's organs save four lives

As the model code of conduct is in place ahead of assembly polls next month, the Delhi Public Works Department has asked all its chief engineers to provide list of those project works which have already started on the ground and those which are yet to begin. The department has asked for the list of such works at the earliest after the Election Commission sought the same. Delhi will go to polls on February 8 to elect 70 members and the results will be declared on February 11. In a written communication to all chief engineers, the PWD said the department has sought details of such works on January 9 and the office of Delhi Chief Electoral Office on January 14. "You are again requested to send the information on priority through email "mailto:electiondelhi2020@gmail.com" \nelectiondelhi2020@gmail.com under intimation to this office," said the written communication issued on Friday. It also stated that the list of works which have already been started on the ground and list of fresh work which has not started on the ground should be sent. Earlier this month, the services department of the Delhi government had asked HoDs to ensure that neither the proposals sent by them breach the model code of conduct nor the compliance of court orders are delayed due to the fear of their breach. "All departments of the government of National Capital Territory of Delhi, while forwarding proposals to the chief secretary for consideration or approval, should clearly mention that provisions of the Model Code of Conduct are not attracted," it had said.

New Delhi, Mar 20 () The government has directed all central public sector undertakings to enforce work from home for half of their non-executive staff with immediate effect in an attempt to prevent the spread of coronavirus. "These orders shall be applicable with immediate effect and will remain in force till April 4, 2020," the Department of Public Enterprises said in an office memorandum. To avoid crowding in heir respective offices, plants, units, etc. all heads of CPSEs have been asked to draft a weekly roster keeping in view their work/production exigencies for the non- executive staff in such a manner that not more than 50 per cent of their non executive staff attend the office every day. "The remaining 50 per cent of the non-executive staff will work from home. Accordingly, the roster will be such that the non-executive staff will attend office on alternate weeks. While deciding the roster for the first week, it is advised to include officials who are residing in close proximity to their office or use their own transport to travel to the offices," said the Department, acting on the advice of the Department of Personnel and Training. The Personnel Ministry on Thursday directed the heads of various government departments (HoDs) to ensure that 50 per cent of Group B and C employees are required to attend office every day and the remaining 50 per cent staff is instructed to work from home. The memorandum issued on Thursday said the working hours for all employees who attend office on a particular day should also be staggered and the office timings may be divided into three groups or categories or as per the suitability of CPSEs and each sub group may be directed to attend the office accordingly. The officials who are not required to attend office should be asked to work from home and be available on telephone and electronic means of communication at all times and should attend office, if called for any exigency of work, said the directive. However, the instructions shall not apply to the offices, units and employees engaged in essential/emergency services and those directly engaged in taking measures to control the spread of coronavirus. The government has also advised companies to implement 'Work from Home' policy for their staff to encourage "social distancing" to curb spreading of coronavirus infections. As part of relaxations in compliance requirements, the corporate affairs ministry has allowed companies to conduct board meetings through video conferencing and other audio visual means till June 30.
