The actor would be taken into custody and he can only apply for bail in high court. 
 
The disappointed actor broke into tears as judge DW Deshpande handed over the verdict. There was a lull in the Bollywood industry as Khan’s supporters and fans called it a sad day.

Salman Khan: Bollywood visibly heartbroken; fans hail the judiciary!

As the Bombay HC gave out its verdict in 2002 hit-and-run case against <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword>, the <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> actor broke down inside court, oblivious to the fact that hundreds of his fans swarmed his residence Galaxy apartments cheering over his acquittal.

	The actor himself drove about an hour to court from Karjat Studio where he was filming his next movie Sultan. Salman's father Salim Khan was photographed leaving Galaxy Apartments earlier. Salman's sister Alvira and faithful bodyguard Shera were also in court.When the High Court pronounced its verdict at about 1.40pm, just his pregnant sister Arpita was present in the house. 
 

	By afternoon, a small crowd of fans (who converged here from far distant places) had joined the banks of media cameras and crews amid high police presence. 
	 
	Even as of now, the crowd milling about on the road outside Galaxy Apartments is still relatively small but is steadily swelling. Salman, who will be 50 later this month, will likely come home to a rapturous welcome today. The actor's neighbours can also expect a traffic jam on the street.
 In May, when the Sessions Court convicted Salman, Galaxy Apartments was crowded with celebrities visiting the actor. The VIP visitors included Shah Rukh Khan, <keyword id="6355923" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aamir-Khan">Aamir Khan</keyword>, Hrithik Rosan, Preity Zinta and Sonakshi Sinha. Salman Khan breaks down in court; fans cheer outside his Bandra residence

In major reprieve for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=salman+khan">Salman Khan,</a> the <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> superstar has been acquitted of all charges in the <keyword id="1473269" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="2002-hit-and-run-case">2002 hit-and-run case</keyword> for lack of incriminating evidence against him. 
	
		"On basis of evidences produced by the prosecution, the appellant cannot be convicted, no matter how differently the common man thinks," the Bombay High Court ruled on Thursday.
	 
	
		He was convicted of all charges by a sessions court earlier this year in the case relating to 2002 when Salman’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Toyota+Land+Cruiser">Toyota Land Cruiser</a> had crashed into five men sleeping outside a bakery on Hill Road in Bandra in the early hours of September 28. One person was killed and four others were injured. <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword>'s lawyers had argued that his driver Ashok Singh was behind the wheels. He had then been sentenced to five years in jail. But later, the <keyword id="44554" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bombay-HC">Bombay HC</keyword> suspended the sentence after the actor appealed against his conviction.On Wednesday, the HC said three important things: The prosecution had failed to bring material on record that could prove beyond reasonable doubt that Salman was driving the car in the incident; the prosecution failed to convince the court that he was under the influence of alcohol; <keyword id="519556" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ravindra-Patil">Ravindra Patil</keyword>, who was Salman’s bodyguard when the incident happened (died in 2007), was a ‘wholly unreliable witness' and the credibility of his statement that the actor was driving drunk and had ignored his warnings repeatedly was questionable. 
	
		"If the witness is partly reliable, then corroboration is required. Ravindra Patil cannot be considered as a wholly reliable witness," the court said, asserting that the sessions court had made a mistake by relying on his statement.
	 
	
		Also, not examining singer Kamaal Khan, who was also in Salman Khan's car that night, was an error, the court observed.

Salman Khan, a free man!

Fans of Bollywood actor <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword> have a reason to cheer! The Bombay High Court has given 48 hour relief to Salman Khan till May 8, who was convicted in the 2002 <keyword id="6385096" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hit-and-run-case">hit and run case</keyword>. Khan is now staring at 5 year long jail term in the case. 
 
The Dabangg star, who has over Rs 200 crore riding on him, will have to appear in the High Court on Monday. Interestingly, the quantum of punishment was announced at around 1:30pm but the actor got interim bail at 5pm on Wednesday. 
 
Senior lawyer Harish Salve stepped in and argued that the actor cannot be put in jail without proper orders. Khan's lawyer also noted that they had received only an operative part of the order. 
 The actor has been convicted for culpable homicide when his SUV rammed into a footpath, killing one person and injuring four others. The case was presided by Sessions Court judge <keyword id="2372499" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="DW-Deshpande">DW Deshpande</keyword>. 
 
The actor has been booked under Section 304 A of the Indian Penal Code, which is against rash and negligent driving, Section 279, Section 337, Section 338 and Section 427 in the case.

As Salman-Dabang-Khan gets convicted in the 2002 hit-and-run case, celebs and fans react in shock

Bollywood’s Dabbang superstar <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword> has been convicted in the 13 year old hit and run case. And this sure ain’t good news for the brands that he endorses. 
	 “This verdict impacts both brand Salman Khan and the brands that he is associated with differently. As far as the brand Salman Khan is concerned, it will definitely be adversely impacted,” said brand expert <keyword id="175362" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harish-Bijoor">Harish Bijoor</keyword>, CEO of Bijoor Consults. 
	 
	He explained that Khan’s huge fan following will be hit and his hero status will get affected. “A lot of his fans would have really preferred him to own up his mistake in the court of law. Instead, he has tried to fight it legally, which will not be taken down well by many of his followers,” added Bijoor. 
	 
	Talking about his brand endorsements, he feels that the brands he endorses will not be impacted much as consumers are mature and realise that it is advertising. “I see over 90% of the brands moving away from Salman Khan,” averred Bijoor. 
	 However, adman <keyword id="132751" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Naresh-Gupta">Naresh Gupta</keyword>, managing partner with Bang in the Middle feels otherwise. I don’t see the brands dumping Salman Khan immediately, for all of them signed him up knowing fully well that he has cases pending against him. His equity will be impacted in long term, as the news of his sentencing starts to build up. He would have a small phase of sympathy, but it will start to peter out. Long term his equity will definitely take a knock This is not the only case pending, the blackbuck one too is pending,” he said. 
	 It should be noted that currently, Salman Khan has over Rs 200 crore riding on him through his film projects. According to market estimates, his brand endorsements are pegged at nearly Rs 50 crore. “On <keyword id="1432297" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Times-Celebex">Times Celebex</keyword> , Khan is among the top 5, so he has a very strong following. His following in mass market will be even higher looking at how his movies do,” suggested Gupta. 
	 
	As per Times Celebex 2015 list, Salman Khan has the highest box office collections and is also the most searched Bollywood star online. Among the brand endorsements, Salman Khan ranks fifth with 10 brands in his kitty.

#SalmanVerdict: Salman Khan's hit-and-run case will surely knock brand Salman!

New Delhi, Jan 28 () Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday said five banks are willing to provide Rs 2.5 lakh crore for highway projects, and stressed on the need for insurance of infrastructure projects.
The road transport minister also said the government is contemplating to create a Motor Vehicle Accident Fund for hit and run cases.
"About five banks are willing to give us around Rs 2.5 lakh crore in our projects. Our projects are economically viable," Gadkari said while addressing a workshop on Motor Vehicle Insurance and Road Safety here.
He said the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has 480 bankable projects and its toll operate and transfer (TOT) model has been a success.
Gadkari also highlighted the need for including road projects in the country into the ambit of insurance.
"Several countries in the world are following the practice of insuring infrastructure projects. These include Canada, Australia, USA, South Africa and UK," he said.
The minister said that the Supreme Court has made it mandatory for all new two wheelers to have a five-year third party insurance.
Similarly, for cars and commercial vehicles, it is mandatory to have a three-year third party insurance.
In case of default, there is a provision of fine up to Rs 2,000.
Under the third party insurance, the responsibility of compensating an accident victim shifts from the vehicle owner to insurance company.
Underlining the importance of insurance, Gadkari said that with a little procedural change in insurance practices, the death rate due to road accidents can be brought down significantly.
He said the ministry is considering forming a Motor Vehicle Accident Fund, which will compensate in hit and run cases.
The Fund will also be used for medical treatment of accident victims.
He said, the compensation amount in hit and run cases has been increased to Rs 2 lakh, while for the injured people in such cases, it is now Rs 50,000.
The minister said provision has been made in the Motor Vehicles Act to protect those helping the accident victims.
The government is also contemplating making provision to protect doctors, nurses and other medical staff from hassles in such cases, he said.
Two special booklets titled 'Road Safety Guide for Children' and 'Road Safety and Safe Driving' were released on the occasion.
Expressing concern over high number of 5 lakh road accidents per year in which 1.5 lakh people are killed, the minister said that those behind faulty DPRs (detailed project report) will not be spared and FIRs could also be lodged against them.
At the same time, he warned that non-performing officials will be shown the exit door. NAM BAL

Five banks willing to invest Rs 2.5 lakh cr in highway projs: Gadkari

New Delhi, Nov 19 () The number of people killed on Indian roads recorded a rise of 2.37 per cent to 1.51 lakh in 2018 and 70 per cent of the victims fell in the age bracket of 18-45 years, according to a report released by the highways ministry on Tuesday.
 A total of 1.47 lakh people were killed in road crashes in 2017, according to the annual report 'Road Accidents in India, 2018' brought out by the ministry's transport research wing.
 "Road accidents in the country have increased marginally by 0.46 per cent during 2018 with the year seeing 4.67 lakh road accidents as against 4.64 lakh in 2017," the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said.
 The fatalities during the same period also rose about 2.37 per cent and 1.51 lakh persons were killed in 2018 as against 1.47 lakh in 2017.
 Road accident injuries have, however, showed a decrease of 0.33 per cent in 2018 as compared to 2017.
 During 2018, like the previous two years, young adults in the age group of 18-45 years accounted for nearly 69.6 per cent of road accident victims.
 The working age group of 18-60 accounted for a share of 84.7 per cent in the total road accident deaths.
 "The number of hit-and-run cases in 2018 accounted for 18.9 per cent of the deaths compared to 17.5 per cent in 2017. Head-on collision, followed by hit-and-run cases, followed by hit from the back accounted for almost 56 per cent of persons killed in 2018. The category, which registered the maximum increase in terms of persons killed in 2018, was collision with parked vehicles," the report said.
 The share of males in number of total accident deaths was 86 per cent, while the share of females hovered around 14 per cent in 2018.
 The report also brings out that while accidents, deaths and injuries registered a steep rise till 2010, they somewhat stabilised after that, with only marginal year-to-year fluctuations.
 Further, the compound annual growth rate of accidents as well as accident-related deaths in the period 2010-18 dropped drastically and was the least when compared with the previous decades, despite the high rate of growth of automobiles.
 National highways, which comprise 1.94 per cent of the total road network, accounted for 30.2 per cent of the total road accidents and 35.7 per cent of deaths in 2018.
 State highways, which account for 2.97 per cent of the road length, accounted for 25.2 per cent and 26.8 per cent of accidents and deaths, respectively.
 Other roads that constitute about 95.1 per cent of the total roads were responsible for the balance 45 per cent of accidents and 38 per cent deaths.
 According to the report, in terms of accident-related killings by type of road users, the number of pedestrians killed accounted for 15 per cent, the share of cyclists was 2.4 per cent and that of two-wheelers was 36 per cent.
 Together, these categories account 53.9 per cent of the accident-related killings and were the most vulnerable category quite in line with global trends.
 Under the category of Traffic Rule Violations, over-speeding proved to be a major killer, accounting for 64.4 per cent of the persons killed followed by driving on the wrong side of the road which accounted for 5.8 per cent of the accident-related deaths.
 Use of mobile phones accounted for 2.4 per cent of the deaths with drunken driving accounting for 2.8 per cent of the persons killed.
 Cases involving driving without valid licence/learners' licence accounted for 13 per cent of accidents.
 About 29 per cent of deaths were be attributed to non-use of helmets and 16 per cent of deaths to non-use of seat belts.

The earlier version of the Bill, which has been three years in the making, had capped the liability at ₹10 lakh. “The earlier proposed capping on claims amount for a third-party liability cover has been removed and currently stands at an unlimited amount. This might lead to increased perceived value of third party insurance but might lead to very high losses,” said Animesh Das, Head of Product Strategy, <keyword id="4055885" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Acko-General-Insurance">Acko General Insurance</keyword>. The compensation for hit-and-run cases is increased to ₹2 lakh in case of a death, from the existing ₹25,000, added Das. The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill was tabled by Nitin Gadkari, the Minister for Road Transport &amp; Highways in the Lok Sabha. The Bill hopes to change the way Indians drive on the roads. It also introduces heavy penalties for offenders. The Bill is also set to constitute a Motor Vehicle Accident Fund, which would provide compulsory insurance cover to all road users in India. And, there are also benefits for <keyword id="1405341" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Insurance-players">insurance players</keyword>. “The fine for not carrying a valid insurance is also increased to ₹2000. This shall lead to increased awareness and higher insurance penetration,” said Das.

Thumbs Up, which had cashed in on his ‘macho image’ which is synonymous with the brand, wanted a ‘younger’ brand ambassador. They chose not to renew Khan’s contract and went with Ranveer Singh instead. As per reports, the brand wanted a star who had more appeal with ‘millennials’ — Singh’s forte. The very same year, Khan lost yet another endorsement — Revital — to a much younger icon and one of the top cricketers in the country, M S Dhoni. Luck turns around for Khan The 53-year old Khan has not lost relevance with his audience. This year, he delivered a superhit with Bharat which clocked in ₹325 crore. And this time around, Pepsi picked him to from the ‘effortlessly cool’ image of Khan. “Over the last year, SWAG has been the underlying message throughout Brand Pepsi’s campaigns, celebrating the innate self-belief of the Indian consumer today. In 2020, we look forward to building the brand’s Har Ghoont Mein Swag proposition with Salman in 2020,” said Pepsi in a press release. Unlike Thumbs Up, Pepsi believes that its new 360-degree campaign will reflect the self-confidence in today’s youth. More importantly, Pepsi also brought Khan in at an interesting juncture. Dabbang 3, which is all set to release in December, is one of the most talked-about movies and has been trending on social media. And, as expected, Pepsi has tied up with the movie as well. The sneak preview shows Khan promoting Pepsi with his signature Dabangg moustache. In addition, the reality show Big Boss, which is currently streaming and hosted by Khan, is the top rated<a href="https://www.filmibeat.com/television/news/2019/trp-toppers-online-bigg-boss-13-retains-top-spot-yeh-rishtey-hain-pyaar-ke-witnesses-major-jump-292565.html"> show in the country</a>. Even though he only appears on the show once a week, the episode featuring him is the most-watched during the 7-day cycle. Maybe that is why Khan had remained a ‘bhai’ to his audiences in spite of his age.

Salman Khan regains his fizz with a Pepsi endorsement years after Coke drops him

We all know that Salman Khan has been through a rough patch in the recent past, with his trial and conviction in a hit-and-run case. Salman, who flew off to Kashmir to shoot for Kabir Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan soon after he got bail from the Bombay High Court, is back to Mumbai and to announce it to the world, he chose Shatrughan Sinha’s style. 
 
Shatrughan Sinha’s daughter Sonakshi, who made her debut opposite Salman in Dabangg, recently paid him back by making him debut opposite her.

Role reversal! This time, Salman debuts opposite Sonakshi

Convicted of killing one person and injuring 5 others, a <keyword id="2838854" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sessions-Court-in-Bombay">Sessions Court in Bombay</keyword> today sentenced <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword> to 5 years in jail, with no more compensation required to be paid to the victims’ families. Given that the jail term exceeds 3 years, there will be no immediate bail provided. Salman’s team of defence counsel will have to appeal to the <keyword id="48485" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bombay-high-court">Bombay High Court</keyword>. It is unlikely that the Bombay High Court will be able to hear the bail plea today. The Bombay High Court is also expected to go on vacation in a few days, while the <keyword id="166190" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="vacation-judge">vacation judge</keyword> has limited powers. At best, it could be a few days to weeks for Salman behind bars before he manages to get out on bail. 
Salman Khan, now, is likely to be taken for finger printing, followed by a medical check-up, post which he will be sent behind bars. But this is not Salman’s last legal resort. Post securing the bail, he has the option of appealing against the <keyword id="6366930" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Session-Court">Session Court</keyword>’s judgement at the Bombay High Court. Even after that, the last resort would be an appeal at the country’s apex court, the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword>. 
Salman has been found guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Salman’s counsel is expected to move the Bombay High Court now, having already come prepared for the worst. This despite his counsel trying its best to ensure that Salman didn’t get sentenced to more than 2 years in jail. Earlier in the day, Salman’s defence pleaded for a lenient jail term of 2 years with a hefty fine/compensation for the affected peoples’ families. The pleas that the superstar’s counsel made were primarily on two grounds. First, that this incident was mainly an aberration to the ‘human’ personality that Salman Khan is. The counsel pleaded to the Judge to consider the ‘humanitarian’ work that Salman has been doing bringing about such positive changes to several lives. The counsel even pleaded, “Don’t punish him more just because he is an <keyword id="271" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="actor">actor</keyword>.” 
The second and more important plea being made pertains again to two very high profile hit and run cases similar to this one. The first being the 1998 Sanjeev Nanda BMW case where Nanda ran over and killed six people including 3 police officers in Delhi and the second one being the Alistair Pereira case in Mumbai, where the latter mowed down and killed 7 people on the pavement. In both cases the Supreme Court handed out jail terms of 2 and 3 years respectively, despite the accused being under the influence of alcohol and behind the wheels when the incidents occurred. In the meanwhile, the court dismissed any perjury case to be filed against Salman’s <keyword id="6366401" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Driver">driver</keyword> <keyword id="167070" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ashok-Singh">Ashok Singh</keyword>.

Once the verdict was announced pronouncing him as guilty, a visibly shaken and crestfallen <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword> was asked by the Judge if he wanted to say anything. To which Salman said, “I was not driving the car.” This, even as he kept gesturing to his sisters <keyword id="2053" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Alvira">Alvira</keyword> and Arpita to not breakdown and cry in court. 
 
Everything now boils down to how many years will he have to serve in prison. The biggest and the most serious charge that he has been found guilty of is under Section 304(2) of the IPC, which pertains to culpable homicide not amounting to murder that carries with it a maximum jail term of 10 years.

The defense told the court, "Don't punish him more just because he is an actor. Enhance the fine but don't punish him beyond 3 years."

The first being the 1998 <keyword id="45587" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sanjeev-Nanda">Sanjeev Nanda</keyword> <keyword id="6355119" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="BMW">BMW</keyword> case where Nanda ran over and killed six people including 3 police officers in Delhi and the second one being the <keyword id="574170" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Alistair-Pereira">Alistair Pereira</keyword> case in Mumbai, where the latter mowed down and killed 7 people on the pavement. In both cases the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> handed out jail terms of 2 and 3 years respectively, despite the accused being under the influence of alcohol and behind the wheels when the incidents occurred. The counsel has argued that in both the above cases 6-7 people were killed with no signs of any compensation to the affected people's families, while this incident involves the death of only one person and a compensation pacjkage of Rs 19 lakh that has already been paid by Salman to the concerned people. 
 The prosecution, in the meanwhile, has pleaded with the judge to hand out the most stringent punishment, not taking his social work into consideration. The court has even ordered for perjury charges to be filed against Salman's <keyword id="6366401" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Driver">driver</keyword>, <keyword id="167070" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ashok-Singh">Ashok Singh</keyword>. 
 
Salman Khan could be heading to either the Nasik or the Yerawada jail very soon.
