Mumbai, Feb 23 (PTI) Former <keyword id="19895394" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha" source="keywords">Lok Sabha</keyword> Speaker Manohar <keyword id="19952829" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="joshi" source="keywords">Joshi</keyword> passed away at a Mumbai hospital on Friday, where he was admitted after suffering a cardiac arrest. Joshi (86) was admitted to <keyword id="20694838" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hinduja-hospital" source="keywords">Hinduja Hospital</keyword> in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on February 21 and passed away early Friday, the private medical facility said. Joshi Sir, as he was popularly known, was the first chief minister of the undivided Shiv Sena and held the post during 1995-1999. He was admitted to the hospital in May last year after suffering a brain haemorrhage. He was also elected as a member of Parliament and was the Lok Sabha Speaker from 2002 to 2004 when the Vajpayee government was in power. Born on December 2, 1937 in coastal Konkan region of Maharashtra, Joshi obtained his Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the prestigious Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) in Mumbai. His political career began with his involvement in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and he later became a member of the Shiv Sena. In the 1980s, Joshi emerged as a key leader within the Shiv Sena, and was known for his organisational skills. He was the Lok Sabha Speaker from 2002 to 2004 when the Vajpayee government was in power. The former Union minister was married to Anagha Joshi, who died in 2020 at the age of 75. He is survived by a son and two daughters. Joshi began his career as a teacher and entered politics in 1967. He was associated with the Shiv Sena for more than four decades. He was a municipal councilor in Mumbai during 1968-70 and Chairman, Standing Committee of the Mumbai municipal corporation in 1970. He was the Mayor of Mumbai during 1976-1977. He was then elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council in 1972. After serving three terms in the Legislative Council, Joshi was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 1990 and was the Leader of the Opposition in the assembly during 1990-91. In the 1999 general elections, Joshi won from the Mumbai North-Central Lok Sabha Constituency as a Shiv Sena candidate, and was later Union minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises. Condoling Joshi's demise, Union minister Nitin Gadkari, who was a member of the Maharashtra ministry when the former was the CM, said the state had lost a "cultured face" of politics. Joshi's family said his last rites will be performed at Shivaji Park crematorium in Dadar area.

"In summary, SP seeks a declaration that neither document has legal effect, whether as a will, power of attorney, declaration of trust or other binding document, or alternatively that the documents are revocable and have been revoked," <keyword id="9455060" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="justice-sarah-falk">Justice Sarah Falk</keyword> notes in her judgment on Tuesday. "Additional relief is also sought, in particular an injunction restraining use of the documents and an account of the persons to whom the documents have been submitted and steps taken in reliance on them," she notes. Presiding over a private hearing in the Chancery Division of the High Court, Justice Falk also partially ruled against a privacy order in the case and agreed for S P Hinduja's daughter, Vinoo, to act on her father's behalf as his "litigation friend" and safeguard her father's interests due to his ill health as a result of a form of dementia. "I have concluded that the court should exercise its power under CPR 21.6 to appoint Vinoo as SP's litigation friend...There is no evidence to indicate that Vinoo's statement that her father has asked her to act for him in the proceedings because he is unable to do so is anything other than accurate," the ruling notes. The High Court judgment makes references to the family's other legal proceedings, including over Hinduja Bank in Switzerland and confidential proceedings in Jersey. It also notes that the three defending brothers contend that they have been prevented from seeing their eldest brother, Srichand P Hinduja, for some time. "It will be apparent from the judgment of the High Court in England, that Mr S P Hinduja's health has been deteriorating for a number of years suffering from Lewy Body disease, which is a form of dementia. Vinoo, his younger daughter, acting as his Litigation Friend is bringing these proceedings on his behalf," said a joint statement by G P, P P and A P Hinduja. "It is very unfortunate that these proceedings are taking place as they go against our Founder's and family's values and principles that have stood for many decades, especially, 'everything belongs to everyone and nothing belongs to anyone'. We intend to defend the claim to uphold these dearly held family values," they note. Referring to the issue as "private family matters" now subject to litigation, they add: "We would also stress that this litigation will not have any impact on our global businesses, which will continue to function as they have been." The $13 billion Hinduja brothers, the richest people in the United Kingdom, are fighting with each other over a letter dispute

New Delhi, Jun 25 () A USD 11 billion business empire spread over 38 countries that includes banks, India's second-largest truck maker and lubricant making firms is at the heart of a legal dispute in the Hinduja family that is now playing out in a London court. Four Hinduja brothers -- Srichand, Gopichand, Prakash and Ashok -- had in 2014 signed on a document saying the assets held by one brother belong to all, and that each of them will appoint the others as their executors. But now family patriarch Srichand Hinduja, 84, and his daughter Vinoo want the letter to be declared of "no legal effect" and the family's assets be separated as per his wish of 2016. Hinduja Group has presence in auto, financial services, IT, media, infrastructure, energy and chemicals and healthcare sectors. Differences among the brothers, who shot into prominence in the 1980s when they were accused of taking a commission from Swedish firm Bofors to secure a defence contract of procuring heavy artillery for India, cropped up over control of a bank the group has in Switzerland. The four brothers have been inseparable, putting up joint appearances in the Bofors case investigation and court hearings. However, the charges against them could not be proven in court. Gopichand, Prakash and Ashok tried to use the 2014 letter to take control of Hinduja Bank -- an asset that was in Srichand's sole name, resulting in the legal battle. Vinoo and Srichand Hinduja now want the court to agree that the document has no legal standing and can be revoked. Hinduja Bank has Shanu Hinduja, the other daughter of Srichand, as chairperson, and her son Karam was appointed CEO just last week. It was not immediately known if the 2014 document, which is at the centre of the dispute, is an informal agreement, a will or the basis of a family constitution. Ashok Leyland, India's second largest truck and bus manufacturer, is the flagship firm of the Hinduja Group. Lubricant maker Gulf Oil Lubricants India Ltd is the other listed firm of the group, while Hindujas hold 14.34 per cent in IndusInd Bank Ltd that has a market-cap of over Rs 33,000 crore. According to the company website, Hinduja Group was started by Parmanand Deepchand Hinduja with an office in Iran. "Merchant Banking and Trade were the twin pillars of the Group's business. The Group remained headquartered in Iran till 1979. It then moved to Europe," it said. The group also has a BPO, the Bengaluru-headquartered Hinduja global Solutions (HGS). It had through Gulf Oil Corp Ltd acquired lube and industrial oil maker Houghton International in December 2012. Besides IndusInd Bank, the group in 1994 set up Hinduja Bank (Switzerland) Ltd. Making its foray into the power sector, Hinduja National Power Corp Ltd set up a 1,040 MW coal-based merchant power plant at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The group's NXTDigital offers cable and DTH services. Hinduja Realty Ventures (HRVL) is flagship real estate development arm of the Hinduja group which also runs a hospital in Mumbai. Eldest of the four brothers, Srichand is the chairman of the Hinduja Group, Hinduja Bank of Switzerland and Hinduja Foundations. He has two daughters -- Shanu and Vinoo. Gopichand, 79, is the co-chairman of Hinduja Group and chairman of Hinduja Automotive Ltd, UK, while Prakash, 75, is the chairman of Hinduja Group (Europe). Gopichand has two sons, Sanjay and Dheeraj and a daughter, Rita. Prakash has two sons, Ajay and Ramkrishan, and a daughter Renuka. Youngest of the siblings, Ashok, 69, is the chairman of Hinduja Group of Companies (India). He has two daughters, Ambika and Satya, and one son, Shom. Ashok Leyland, Gulf Oil and IndusInd Bank, the three BSE-listed firms, do not have any individual shareholding of the family, as per data provided by the companies to the exchange. These companies have promoter group entities holding stakes. Hinduja Global Solutions, the BPO service provider, is the only group company that has members of the Hinduja family directly holding shares. The promoter stake of Hinduja flagship firm Ashok Leyland is split into four entities -- Hinduja Bank (Switzerland), Hinduja Automotive, Hinduja Foundries Holding and CitiBank NA -- making up nearly 52 per cent stake. No Hinduja family member holds any direct stake in Ashok Leyland, as per the BSE data. It is not known how much each brother holds in these companies. The brothers have been ranked together in rich lists. Among the third generation of the family Vinoo, Sanjay, Dheeraj, Ajay, Ramkrishan (Remi) and Shom Hinduja are involved with the group, while Shanu, Ritu, Ambika and Satya Hinduja are not engaged in the business. Dheeraj Hinduja, son of Gopichand Hinduja, is the chairman of Ashok Leyland. Dheeraj's brother Sanjay Hinduja chairs Gulf Oil. Hinduja family feud: $11 bn empire of truck making, lubricants, banks at stake

The last month of 2021 saw good hiring growth in India in sectors like travel and hospitality, retail and education, owing to the festive quarter and a rebound, a new report showed on Friday. The rebound was, however, likely to be hampered once again with the <keyword id="1609796" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="omicron" source="Orion">Omicron</keyword> variant spread in the country this month. According to the Naukri JobSpeak Index, the festive year-end marked an upswing in hiring activity over last year across all major metros. "While IT has continued to drive growth in hiring, it is heartening to see a comeback from sectors of hospitality and travel, retail, and real estate," said Pawan Goyal, Chief Business Officer, <keyword id="218117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="naukri-com" source="Orion">Naukri.com</keyword>. Top metro cities saw growth in hiring when compared with December last year. Hyderabad led at +12 per cent (on-year), growth followed by Bengaluru (+11 per cent), Mumbai (+8 per cent), Pune (+4 per cent), and Chennai (+6 per cent). Delhi was flat and Kolkata de-grew by 3 per cent. "We see a lot of talent shifting back to their cities of work with most companies drafting their return to work policies. As companies continue to press the pedal on their digital transformation journeys, the demand for certain functional areas and sectors will keep growing," Goyal added. Among the emerging cities, Ahmedabad (+21 per cent) recorded the highest growth. Hiring for new jobbers and young professionals was steady in December as demand for freshers and professionals with 4-7 years of experience remained flat. Demand was slightly affected for professionals in the 8-12 years (-4 per cent) and 13-16 years (-9 per cent) experience segments, the report said. Retail, travel and hospitality sectors hired the most number of employees in December: Report

Strategic and financial sponsors have shown interest to acquire <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=hospital" target="_blank">multi-speciality hospital</a> chain <keyword id="467007" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Care-Hospitals">CARE Hospitals</keyword> from its current <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=private+equity" target="_blank">private equity</a> owners Advent International. 
 The front-runners to acquire Hyderabad-headquartered hospital chain are <keyword id="34499" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="private-equity">private equity</keyword> group Abraaj, and a consortium of PD Hinduja Hospital, Everstone Group and even South African healthcare chain Netcare and Bain Capital, Singapore's Temasek Holdings and Baring Private Equity Asia. 
 
They have submitted offers and the final negotiations are underway with the CARE Hospitals Group, which is owned and managed by Quality CARE India Ltd and runs 17 hospitals across nine cities in India. 
 
Sources told Economic Times that majority of the offers have valued the chainbetween Rs 1500 crore - Rs 1800 crore inclusive of its debt. 
CARE Hospitals’ founders developed Asia’s first indigenous <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=coronary" target="_blank">coronary stent</a>. The chain plans to add 300 to 400 beds over the next 18 months. 
 
However, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=healthcare+industry" target="_blank">healthcare industry</a> experts have a mixed reaction about the prospects of CARE. 
 
"It is a fully juiced out asset and doesn't throw out cash like a Medanta or Apollo. It is also largely based in Tier II cities and have smaller operations while its flagship property is in Hyderabad, a fiercely competitive market," an investment banker, following this trade, told ET. 
 
As per Barclays, Indian healthcare market has significant long-term growth potential sharing similar growth drivers as other key regional markets.

The government's own modeling study suggested the country's outbreak would be over by February. "Things weren't as bad last year."Despite this, the country's largest religious gathering went ahead. The centuries-old Kumbh Mela sees tens of millions of Hindu pilgrims travel to bathe en masse in rivers in a ritual meant to cleanse them of their sins. Joshi, 86, was rushed to the Hinduja Hospital in Mahim after suffering a heart attack late on Thursday. 'Sir', as he was popular in political circles because of his teaching background and a stern demeanour, succumbed during treatment around 3 a.m., plunging the state political fraternity into gloom. His family said that Joshi's mortal remains will be kept at their home in Matunga to enable people to pay their last respects from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., and then taken in a procession for the funeral at Dadar Crematorium around 3 p.m. One of the closest confidantes of the late Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray, Joshi had over six decades in politics starting as a Municipal Corporator, then Mayor, Maharashtra CM, Union Minister, then crowning glory as the Speaker of Lok Sabha. Joshi had been suffering from certain old-age related ailments for the past several months and largely kept out of public glare, but remained with the SS-UBT, till he breathed his last. Top leaders across the political spectrum have paid rich tributes to Joshi who headed the first-ever saffron government in the state comprising the undivided Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (1995-1999), in an era when politics was more principled and less unscrupulous. However, their average wealth has decreased by 9.3%. The India Rich List added 273 new entrants and 38 new billionaires over the last year. The number of dollar billionaires also went up to 259, up 38 as compared to last year. “The trends prove that India is a shining moon in a world that is staring at recession. While the China Rich List has dropped 10% for each of this year and last year, both in terms of average wealth and in terms of the number of people that make the list. India is closing the gap,” said Anas Rahman Junaid, MD and Chief Researcher, Hurun India. India has 259 billionaires, up 38 compared to last year. While industrial products, metals &amp; mining added the greatest number of new entrants to the list. Pharma still holds the numero uno position and contributed 133 entrants to the list. “Over the past five years, many entrepreneurs have witnessed extraordinary wealth growth, some experiencing an astonishing 1,000% surge. Construction and engineering emerge as the top gainers in the top 100 list, followed closely by pharmaceuticals which has a cut-off of ₹20,000 crore,” said Anirudha Taparia, co-founder and joint CEO, 360 ONE Wealth. Funding winter &amp; founders’ wealth While 264 in the Indian rich list saw their wealth drop in the last one year, there were as many as 55 dropouts. The most notable of the dropouts is Byju Raveendran. The founder of edtech Byju’s exited the list on the back of investor markdowns. The funding winter and its ripple effects led to startup founders on the list experiencing a collective wealth dip of ₹85,000 crore. Recent policies, like the retrospective GST imposition on gaming companies and the angel tax and so on, could potentially hinder long-term wealth generation by startups, Hurun said. However, a few IPOs that stumbled last year did make a comeback. As new-age internet companies gain in value, entrepreneurs like Deepinder Goyal of Zomato and Yashish Dahiya of PB Fintech have seen their wealth increase by over 70%. Startup wealth creation will persist, albeit within a changing landscape, Junaid said. The IPO stars: Public issues and rich list debuts The stock markets also rewarded many public debuts and made their founders into billionaires. Ramesh Kunhikannan’s Kaynes Technology made a strong stock market debut. And he entered the list with a wealth of ₹8,200 crore. The spectacular listing gains provided by stock market debuts of many companies have pulled their owners into the rich list. Some of them include Jagdish Prasad Chowdhary of Titagarh Wagons, Ranjit Pendurthi of Archean Chemical Industries and Ajay P Thakker &amp; family of Jupiter Life Line Hospitals. Pavan Kumar Bajaj and Karan Bajaj of Electronics Mart India and Harsha Engineers’ Harish Rangwala and Rajendra Shantilal Shah too entered the coveted list of richest Indians after their stocks skyrocketed on debut. But there is money to be made in private markets too. Manish Kejriwal of Kedaara Capital became the first Indian Private Equity fund manager to enter the list.

Hurun India Rich List: Birla and Bajaj back in the top ten with Ambani on top in 2023

New York, Researchers, including one of Indian-origin have revealed that the majority of <keyword id="28944" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pregnant-women">pregnant women</keyword>, who tested positive for <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">Covid-19</keyword> on arrival to the delivery room were asymptomatic. In a retrospective cross-sectional study of universal screenings for SARS-Cov-2, the virus that causes Covid-19 implemented in the labor and delivery unit of Elmhurst hospital at Queens, New York, during March and April, the researchers found that more than one-third of nearly 130 pregnant women tested positive for the coronavirus. According to the study published in the journal 'PLOS One', this is a much higher proportion than reported at other hospitals in <keyword id="72226" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="New-York-City">New York City</keyword> during the pandemic surge, and are likely related to social inequities experienced by the surrounding population. The majority or 72% of the <keyword id="6503086" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="pregnant-patients">pregnant patients</keyword> who tested positive were asymptomatic, meaning they did not display any symptoms associated with Covid-19. These findings add to the evidence that there was an early and rampant asymptomatic spread of the disease at a time when most of the community and hospital testing was limited to symptomatic individuals. "This study is instructive for other labor and delivery units, and hospitals across the world as we continue to refine pandemic preparedness," said study author Dr. Sheela Maru from the Mount Sinai hospital in the US. "In future epidemics, it may be prudent to look at labor and delivery screening numbers much earlier on, as pregnant women continue to seek essential care despite social-distancing measures and also represent the generally young and healthy community population," Dr Maru added. Dr Maru said universal screening in the labour and delivery unit ensured the safety of patients and staff during an acute surge in Covid-19 infections through appropriate identification and isolation of pregnant women with positive test results. In addition to their <keyword id="6356030" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="status">status</keyword> for Covid-19, the study reviewed patients' demographic data, including age, ethnicity, primary language, zip code, marital status, health insurance status, and clinical data, including the mode of delivery, length of stay, and comorbidities such as chronic hypertension, preeclampsia, pre-pregnancy obesity, asthma, diabetes, depression, and anxiety. Earlier, a study published in the journal 'JAMA Network Open' revealed that 95% of women who tested positive for Covid-19 during pregnancy had no adverse outcomes. But the shareholders are panicking already. The stock lost over 17% on Monday even as the lenders prepare to meet later today to discuss the various options that can help to turn around the airline The airline stalled operations on April 17 after the State Bank of India (SBI) refused to extend an additional loan. It has an outstanding loan of around ₹85 billion which it owes to a clutch of lenders. The spurt in volume of shares traded on June 17 took the stock to a new all-time low of ₹66.4. The hearing at insolvency court is expected to be held on June 20 after an appeal by two of its creditors, Shaman Wheels and Gagar Enteprises, to recover their dues. In spite of being the country’s second largest carrier before the ongoing crisis, the airline came under financial stress due to untoward expansion plans leading to debt, coupled with increase in fuel and other operational costs. How to save Jet Lenders are now trying various methods like giving an ultimatum to possible bidders like Hindujas and Etihad to close a deal. Yet another option is to sell the ‘Jet Airways’ brand to an interested investor. This plan is however how on their agenda for the lenders who have been hoping against hope that this shuttered company does not go down, taking their money with them.
