More than one crore children enrolled in around 1.13 lakh primary schools in <keyword id="6357713" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uttar-Pradesh">Uttar Pradesh</keyword> will now be able to improve their pronunciation in both Hindi and English, by using <keyword id="6355629" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword>'s 'Bolo' app. The free app was launched in India in March 2019 and uses Google's speech recognition and text-to-speech technology. It features an animated character, 'Diya', who encourages children to read stories aloud and helps if the child is unable to pronounce a word. It also lauds the reader when he/she completes the reading. State Institute of Educational Management and Training (SIEMAT) Director Sanjay Sinha said that the app is designed for primary grade children, aged between six and 11 years. "'Bolo' helps improve both their English and Hindi reading skills, by encouraging them to read aloud. The app also gives instant feedback," he said. 'Bolo' is actually a read-along app or a speech-based, reading-tutor app for Android-based smartphones. It can be downloaded for free from Google's Play Store. Sinha further said that the app will also help teachers wherever they are in doubt about the pronunciation of a Hindi or English word. For its introduction in government primary schools, the Samgra Shiksha Abhiyan project officials have entered into an agreement with Google and parents of these children who have smartphones, have also been trained by teachers to use the app at home to help children. According to state resource group (SRG) member, Sunil Tiwari, as part of efforts to implement 'Mission Prerna' - the flagship programme of the state government to improve quality of education in schools running under the Basic Shiksha Department, members of the SRG, key resource persons (KRPs) and academic resource persons (ARPs) are giving online training to around 5.5 lakh primary school teachers of the state including assistant teachers, Shiksha Mitras and subject instructors, on using <keyword id="7400200" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-Bolo">Google Bolo</keyword> effectively. The app can also work offline and does not require an active Internet connection, he said. 'Google Bolo' plans to teach over one crore kids how to pronounce in Uttar Pradesh primary schools

<ul><li><keyword id="6355629" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword> has partnered with Vodafone Idea to launch a hotline number to give 2G users access to the Google Assistant.</li><li>The call won’t be charged and the hotline is open 24/7.</li><li>Users can also keep their default language as English on their device, but still talk to the Google Assistant in Hindi.</li><li>Google Assistant’s Hindi capabilities will be coming to Android TVs soon.</li></ul>Normally if you want to ask the Google Assistant anything, you need a data connection for her to respond with information. In India, half of the population isn’t online and women are the majority of the unconnected, according to Caesar Sengupta, Google’s General Manager and Vice President of Payments and Next Billion Users. So, Google has partnered with Vodafone Idea to bring Google Assistant to 2G users.

 Rather than connecting to the Internet and consuming data, 2G device users can now call a designated number — 000 800 9191 000 — to ask the assistant any questions and get information. The call won’t be charged and the line is open around the clock.

 Google has already piloted the programme with 1000s of users in Lucknow and Kanpur. Their research showed that most 2G users asked Google Assistant to help with homework. Not stuck with one language for Google Assistant "Hindi is the second most used Google Assistant language after English," said Manuel Bronstein, the Vice President of Project Management for Google Assistant. Starting today, users won’t have to choose between the two. If the default language on Android is English, users can still talk to the Google Assistant in Hindi — or any of the other 32 supported languages — by simply saying, "Google, Hindi bolo (Google, speak in Hindi)". Google Assistant will also be available in Hindi across all Android TVs in the coming months. The assistant's interpreter mode, which was only available on Google Home and smart displays so far, will also be expanding its application to Android, Android Go and KaiOS smartphones. It allows two people to converse in two different languages by serving as the middleman to translate. During its annual event in India, Google for India 2019, the company made a few key announcements — a lot of which had to do with bringing new Indic languages to Google apps and their features. "Hindi is the second most used Google Assistant language after English," said Manuel Bronstein, the Vice President of Project Management for Google Assistant. But, it’s not just about the languages but the technology that goes into making the apps possible. Google launched a new products geared towards bringing more people online like Google Assistant for 2G users, Google Research India, Google Pay for Business among others.  Google is launching its first <keyword id="107950" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="artificial-intelligence">artificial intelligence</keyword> (AI) laboratory in Bangalore — Google Research India — which will be led by Manish Gupta, a renowned scientist. "We believe that India will play a central role in the future development of AI. India has a proud history of computer science research. It is home to a thriving technology ecosystem," said Jay Yagnik, Vice President and Engineering Fellow at Google. Google Research India will collaborate with Indian academic institutions, government and other industry players to explore the potential of AI in India. Yagnik said that more details will be made available by the company in the coming months. Google Search gets a new look The default search engine for most users, Google Search, will also see some changes. For starters, it will be available in three more Indic languages. The search results will also have a more ‘modern look’ where Indic search results will be highlighted more prominently depending on the user's language settings. So, if a user’s default setting is Hindi, then results in Hindi would show up above results in English and other languages. Google Search is also aspiring to become more personalised and contextual to the user using AI. Customise ‘Discover’ Discover videos were limited to English but will also be available in Indic languages now. Users will also have the option to choose their categories of preference so that their discover tab can filter out items that might be relevant. Users can also follow categories directly from a post if and when they come across something that sparks their interest. More languages on Google Lens and BOLO Google Lens translator went live a few weeks go and it now has plans to introduce three additional languages — Tamil, Telugu and Marathi. The translator allows users to point and click a picture of any sign board in a foreign language, and Google Lens will change the text within the picture to a language that the user understands. It can also read the text out loud in the preferred language. BOLO, Google’s speech based reading app that helps kids read, is also bringing on new languages — Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. Google is also collaborating with the Global Book Alliance to bring in more books in regional languages onto the platform as well as collaborating with local Indian publishers. Since BOLO’s launch in India, over 800,000 children have used the app across 28,000 towns and villages with access to over 3 million stories. The company said that it has continued its hiring activities even during lockdown and 3 new members have joined during lockdown phase while 2 more will be joining next month.
