Royal Enfield set to launch the new Himalayan – Everything we know so far

Thus, it was a surprise for many in 2016 that after acquiring the reputed chassis making brand, Harris Performance a year earlier, the 1901-born bike major decided to go with a completely modern looking Himalayan 411. The biking community, however, wasn't complaining as the bike was an adventure touring dual sport motorcycle, a gap that needed filling up. Fast forward eight years and Siddharth Lal’s team is getting ready for major upgrades to enhance performance and live up better to its touring description while having a global ambition. Such is the fandom of the Himalayan 411’s looks amongst the bike driving community that a section is slightly worried about “too much look change”. Says Abhishek Roy, an avid biker who has done a round trip to Leh-Ladakh from Hyderabad, “Looks will definitely matter. But, if the bike has everything that I’ve picked from the leaked information available, then looks might become secondary.” So, what are these changes that the biking world is excited about? To understand that we need to look at the Himalayan 411 with which RE won its biggest war in placing itself as a more-than-just-retro manufacturer. The Himalayan 411: What was amiss? The Himalayan 411 and its sister, the Scram 411, which was launched in 2022, offered Indian riders who wanted to go off-roading a viable option. The engine, however, has its limitations, as it is air-cooled and, thus, the bike sometimes lacks the required torque needed on long haul rides. Says Nishant Shukla, a biker who has explored the Western coastal line as well as Rajasthan’s desert terrains on bike, “Since I am not a big off roader, I would also see the highway worthiness of the new Himalayan. If it has ample power/torque. Moreover, the current Himalayan lacks the fancy adventure bike aids such as ride by wire, quickshifters etc.” The competition has heated up in the ADV (adventure) segment, with the launch of the Yezdi Adventure and Triumph Scrambler 400 X. In the lower rung of this segment, the Hero’s XPulse 200 has done well but the main competition for the new Himalayan will still be the KTM 390 Duke Adventure. The current 411-cc, single-cylinder engine pushes out only 24.3 horsepower, which translates to approximately 110 kmph cruising speed. Compare this to the KTM 390 Adventure which has 43 horsepower at its disposal. Moreover, after the 110 kmph speed, acceleration is found lacking unlike the RE’s 650 twin-cylinder offerings – the Interceptor, the Continental GT and the Super Meteor 650. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="What the market expects from the new Himalayan 450" text="What the market expects from the new Himalayan 450">What the market expects from the new Himalayan 450</cmsannotation> The new Himalayan, as per media reports, will try and resolve the above issues. Business Insider took a deep dive into this new offering by Royal Enfield: A liquid-cooled engine The new Himalayan, is expected to come with a liquid cooled engine, unlike its predecessor. This should translate to longer riding time at a higher torque. It is estimated to produce around 40 BHP and 40 Nm and will be paired with a six-speed gearbox, as per a <a href="https://www.team-bhp.com/news/royal-enfield-himalayan-450-leaked-ahead-launch">Team-BHP report</a>. Multiple riding modes Auto tracking websites suggest that the new bike will come with three riding modes, which was missing in the previous edition and has riders excited. The bike should be enabled by a first-time ride-by-wire system. Says Roy who is waiting for the bike launch before making up his mind on the adventure bike to buy, “I’m really waiting to test the different drive modes and the ride by wire.” The modes on offer should support rain riding, off road riding and cruising (normal). The off-road mode when enabled will switch off the ABS (anti-locking braking system) at the real wheel to support deliberate rear sliding. A bigger tank? The tank on the new bike, as per leaked images <a href="https://www.autocarindia.com/bike-news/royal-enfield-himalayan-450-leaked-ahead-of-november-launch-429182">reported by Autocar</a>, looks to be bigger and reports say that it could be as large as a 15-20 litre unit offering longer run time. Expected launch Royal Enfield is targeting an <a href="https://www.bikewale.com/royalenfield-bikes/himalayan-450/">early November launch</a> of the bike as per multiple reports. It is noteworthy that the bike manufacturer holds its annual biking event – the Rider Mania – in Goa each year around the same time and the buzz on the street says that the new Himalayan might be unveiled between November 24-26 for the public in full glory. The global ambition The top end of the new Himalayan 450, as per reports, will be launched later next year and is codenamed K1X. The buzz on the street is that Royal Enfield has rallying aspirations and might be targeting the coveted <keyword id="76133" type="General" weightage="40" keywordseo="dakar-rally" source="Orion">Dakar Rally</keyword> in years to come. The event is open to amateur and professional entries but the latter make up about 80% of the participants. In fact, one of India’s top offroaders, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/CuHUIjVhFeC/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=b7715b60-a33a-47bc-95d1-a8e5d547dff8">CS Santosh</a> released a teaser on Instagram of the bike a few months earlier showcasing its agility. That the company has ambitions to play in the European and American markets is no secret. The company’s 650-cc bikes have been a favourite of sorts for the British market already as they offer decent power with acceleration at a cheaper rate than the Suzuki, Harley, Triumph and Kawasakis. In 2020, UK’s Motorcycle Industry Association showed that the Interceptor 650 sales were second only to the highly popular Honda PCX 125 scooter. Tyre changes? The new Himalayan is likely to stick to CEAT tyres but media reports suggest that unlike its predecessor it will be made from a special compound to support both off-roading as well as highway cruising. To put it in context, the company currently says that the present Himalayan’s tyres are designed 70% for roads and 30% for off-roading.

Bend it like Bruce Lee: Royal Enfield launches bike inspired by the sensei

The diverging stock prices of two motorcycle majors – Bajaj Auto and Eicher Motors – are telling an interesting story. Over the last one month Bajaj Auto’s stock has rallied 10% while that of Eicher has risen by 3.3%, which is a modest increase in comparison. And the Nifty Auto Index has rallied by 5.2% in the same time. So what’s happening to makers of two-wheelers in India? Competition is on the rise in the mid-premium segment, where Eicher has been a leader so far with its iconic Royal Enfield offerings. Bajaj Auto has launched the Triumph Speed 400 which provides 39.5 bhp of power with a 398-cc engine. Bajaj Auto stock has gotten a power boost due to the positive reviews the Triumph Speed 400 has received. Compared to the Harley or RE’s <keyword id="6426894" type="General" weightage="60" keywordseo="himalayan" source="Orion">Himalayan</keyword> and 350-cc offerings, the bike offers higher power. Another two-wheeler major – Hero MotoCorp in collaboration with Harley Davidson – has launched the new X440 which provides 27 bhp power with a 440-cc engine. Both the bikes have received approximately 20-26K bookings since launch in early-July. Moreover, the Yezdi Adventure and the <keyword id="220906" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jawa" source="Orion">Jawa</keyword> 42 Bobber have also added to the competition. Competition in the mid-premium range of bikes in India is growing by the day and this is impacting stock prices too. Jeffries, research house, points out that the Eicher, although up 5% in 2023, has underperformed the Nifty Auto Index by 24% in this period. The report adds that it is time to “buy” it as it sees limited impact from competition launching new bikes in the past month and a half. Like economists, analysts rarely agree on likely winners. While Jefferies has retained its faith in Eicher, BofA Securities has upgraded Bajaj Auto to a ‘Buy’ saying that FY25 looks promising for the company with new Triumph launches on the same platform lined up. “The product (Speed 400cc) clearly seems to be making a mark in large metro cities-design, specs &amp; price stand out.. Scrambler 400cc launch in a few weeks and export markets expansion will be added catalysts and drive volumes. Firstly, it has the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/auto/news/why-the-motorcycling-world-is-kicked-about-himalayan-450-which-will-launch-in-november-2023/articleshow/103795276.cms">new Himalayan launch</a> lined up – an adventure tourer which is expected to give 40 bhp of power, in-line with the new Triumph and the segment favourite, KTM 390. Channel checks also suggest that RE has not seen any significant impact so far, even in cities where Harley and Triumph bikes are available. “We factor RE total volumes (domestic + exports) of 76K/85K/95K in FY24E/FY25E/FY26E,” argues the Jeffries report. It adds, “We retain Buy on EIM with revised PT of Rs 4,150 (earlier Rs4,000), valuing RE at 25x FY25E PE (earlier 24x).” A wider portfolio to bank on Royal Enfield has a much wider portfolio than its competition in the premium biking segment. This offers buyers options at multiple price points to enter the segment – all the way from 350-cc to 650-cc. A new 650-cc bike, most likely to be called Shotgun 650, has also been spotted being road tested. In the first phase of Silk Samagra, about 900 silkworm rearers were directly benefited and about 618 rearing houses were also established in Jammu and Kashmir. The UT government has increased the revolving fund from ₹70 lakh to ₹3.50 crore. The Central Silk Board has allocated ₹35 crore for J&amp;K under Silk Samagra Phase-II benefitting around 27,000 families involved in sericulture in Jammu and Kashmir. The Central Silk Board has assured the J&amp;K administration that the funding will be enhanced as per the requirements in Himalayan region so that more and more farmers and entrepreneurs are benefitted in the coming years. The Sericulture Department in J&amp;K is mulling to include Krishi Vigyan Kendras to enable a strong support system for sharing of information and developing necessary facilities to increase the income of farmers and providing them with linkages to sericulture FPOs. The Union Ministry of Textiles is supporting all the endeavors of the J&amp;K government to increase silk production in the Union Territory. Though there is no exact record as to how and when exactly the silk industry originated in Jammu and Kashmir, there is a mention of silk and mulberry tree in Rajtarangini — the oldest written chronicle of Kashmir. The references in Mahabharata and Ramayana establish that sericulture was being practiced in J&amp;K from times immemorial. There is evidence in ancient Sanskrit literature that the original home of silk is J&amp;K. Despite silk being one of the traditional industries in the Himalayan region, it didn't get the desired attention and focus from 1947 to 2019. The half hearted efforts that were put in by the former political regimes didn't produce the desired results. Till 1988 the silk industry was controlled by the government and farmers were getting no benefit out of the sale of cocoons as per floor price fixed by the government. The production had declined owing to aging workers and old machines. The September 2014 floods had severely damaged the traditional looms of the factory making it defunct for many months. The production had come down drastically to 1,000-1,500 metres per month and instead of 38 varieties, it was only able to produce eight varieties. After the introduction of new technology and high-tech looms the factory is on its way to regain its pristine glory. Presently the factory is able to weave 10,000-12,000 metres of silk cloth in a month working in a single shift which means the capacity has increased to produce 1.5 lakh metres annually. During the past one year, the factory has been able to produce 23 varieties of silk cloth. In Jammu, a silk weaving factory was established at Bari Brahmana in 2020. In the year 2020-21, the factory produced 4.50 lakh metre silk fabric and around 2,0000 families associated with the cocoon rearing in the Jammu Division were benefited due to it. According to the officials, there are about 7 lakh mulberry trees - 53 per cent (370,000) are in Jammu and 47 per cent in Kashmir. There are 2,800 villages and 33,000 households in which sericulture was generating an income of Rs 2,026 lakh annually and 3.5 lakh man days activities are associated with this profession. The Sericulture Department now has 173 nurseries spread over an area of 963 acres, and 374 mulberry blocks over an area of 2,215 acres across J&amp;K. The trade route was closed rather suddenly after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019, forcing Indian traders to return from the <keyword id="22003706" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Taklakot-mart" source="keywords">Taklakot mart</keyword> in Tibet leaving behind their woollen products. Five years have passed but the route has not been opened, an organisation of border traders in Dharchula said. The traders who belong to the <keyword id="22005864" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhotia-tribe" source="keywords">Bhotia tribe</keyword> started to raise their demand for reopening of the trade route through Lipulekh after China recently began the process of implementing a pact, in which it had agreed to open all 14 trade passes with Nepal. The implementation of the agreement inked by China and Nepal in December, 2022 began on May 25 this year, when China opened Piangi pass situated in Dolpa district of eastern Nepal, president of Bharat Tibetan Simant Vyapar Samiti, Dharchula Jeewan Singh Rongkali said. Three more passes along the Indo-Tibet border in the western region of Nepal that fall in the districts of Humla, Bajang and Darchula will be opened on June 20, 30 and 25 respectively, he said. "We have so far sent 22 applications to the government of India requesting it to take up with the Chinese authorities the reopening of the trade route through Lipulekh pass but have received no response so far," Rongkali said. According to Rongkali, Indian tribal traders from Dharchula alone have left trading items worth Rs 15 lakh in <keyword id="22005865" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="taklakot" source="keywords">Taklakot</keyword> Mart of Tibet at the time of closure of border trade in 2019, following the Covid-19 pandemic. "We have no information if our stored goods are safe or in a state of decay. They were stored in plywood covers at the time of closure of trade," Rongkali said. "We want trade with China to be resumed through Lipulekh pass but if for some reason it is not possible then the traders should be given 15 days' time to go to Taklakot to ring back their goods," he said. Goods of over 450 Indian tribal traders have been lying there for the last 5 years, he said. According to Rongkali, over 450 Indian traders used to supply essential goods to villagers of over 45 villages of western Tibet through this trade route since 1992. Until recent years, the snow leopard range in India was undefined due to a lack of extensive nationwide assessment for this vulnerable species. Before 2016, approximately one-third of the range (around ca. 100,347 km2) received minimal research attention, reduced to just 5 per cent in pockets like Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh, the official added. The Ministry said that recent status surveys have significantly increased understanding, providing preliminary information for 80 per cent of the range (about 79,745 km), compared to 56 per cent in 2016. The water table under the capital has dropped by 300 metres (nearly 1,000 feet) since the 1970s.
China is using up water at an unsustainable rate. Thanks to overuse, rivers simply disappear. The number of rivers with significant catchment areas has fallen from more than 50,000 in the 1950s to 23,000 now. As if that were not bad enough, China is polluting what little water it has left. In 2007 the Yellow River Conservancy Commission, a government agency, surveyed 13,000 kilometres (8,000 miles) of the river and its tributaries and concluded that a third of the water is unfit even for agriculture. Four thousand petrochemical plants are built on its banks.
The water available for use is thus atrocious. Song Lanhe, chief engineer for urban water-quality monitoring at the housing ministry, says only half the water sources in cities are safe to drink. More than half the groundwater in the north China plain, according to the land ministry, cannot be used for industry, while seven-tenths is unfit for human contact, ie, even for washing. In late 2012 the Chinese media claimed that 300 corpses were found floating in the Yellow River near Lanzhou, the latest of roughly 10,000 victims--most of them (according to the local police) suicides--whose bodies have been washing downstream since the 1960s.
In 2009 the World Bank put the overall cost of China's water crisis at 2.3% of GDP, mostly reflecting damage to health. Water shortages also imperil plans to expand energy production, threatening economic growth. China is hoping to follow America into a shale-gas revolution. But each shale-gas well needs 15,000 tonnes of water a year to run. China is also planning to build around 450 new coal-fired power stations, burning 1.2 billion tonnes of coal a year. The stations have to be cooled by water and the coal has to be washed. The grand total is 9 billion tonnes of water. China does not have that much available. According to the World Resources Institute, a think-tank in Washington, DC, half the new coal-fired plants are to be built in areas of high or extremely high water stress.
<h3>Every drop is precious</h3>
The best answer would be to improve the efficiency with which water is used. Only about 40% of water used in industry is recycled, half as much as in Europe. The rest is dumped in rivers and lakes. Wang Zhansheng of Tsinghua University argues that China is neglecting its urban water infrastructure (sewerage, pipes and water-treatment plants), leading to more waste. Water prices in most cities are only about a tenth of the level in big European cities, yet the government is reluctant to raise them, for fear of a popular backlash.
The result is that China's "water productivity" is low. For each cubic metre of water used, China gets $8-worth of output. The average for European countries is $58 per cubic metre. Of course, these countries are richer--but they are not seven times richer.
Rather than making sensible and eminently doable reforms in pricing and water conservation, China is focusing on increasing supplies. For decades the country has been ruled by engineers, many of them hydraulic engineers (including the previous president, Hu Jintao). Partly as a result, Communist leaders have reacted to water problems by building engineering projects on a mind-boggling scale.
The best known such project is the Three Gorges dam on the Yangzi. But this year an even vaster project is due to start. Called the South-North Water Diversion Project, it will link the Yangzi with the Yellow River, taking water from the humid south to the parched north. When finished, 3,000km of tunnels and canals will have been drilled through mountains, across plains and under rivers. Its hydrologic and environmental consequences could be enormously harmful.
The project links China's two great rivers through three new channels. The eastern, or downstream one is due to open by the end of this year (see map on previous page). It would pump 14.8 billion cubic metres along 1,160km of canals, using in part a 1,500-year-old waterway, the Grand Canal. The water pumped so far has been so polluted that a third of the cost has gone on water treatment. A midstream link, with 1,300km of new canals, is supposed to open by October 2014. That is also when work on the most ambitious and controversial link, the upstream one across the fragile Himalayan plateau, is due to begin. Eventually the South-North project is intended to deliver 45 billion cubic metres of water a year and to cost a total of 486 billion yuan ($79.4 billion). It would be cheaper to desalinate the equivalent amount of seawater.
The environmental damage could be immense. The Yangzi river is already seriously polluted. Chen Jiyu of the Chinese Academy of Engineering told South Weekly, a magazine, in 2012 that the project so far has reduced the quantity of plankton in the Yangzi by over two-thirds and the number of benthic organisms (those living on the river bottom) by half. And that was before it even opened. Ma Jun, China's best known environmental activist, says the government's predilection for giant engineering projects only makes matters worse, "causing us to hit the limits of our water resources".
But the biggest damage could be political. Proposed dams on the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra, Mekong and other rivers are bound to have an impact on downstream countries, including India, Bangladesh and Vietnam. The Chinese say they would take only 1% of the run-off from the giant Brahmaputra. But if all these projects were operational--and the engineering challenges of one or two of them are so daunting that even the Chinese might balk at them--they would affect the flow of rivers on which a billion people depend. Hence the worries for regional stability. And all this would increase China's water supplies by a mere 7%. The water crisis is driving China to desperate but ultimately unhelpful measures.
