Last year, Hike CEO and founder Kavin Bharti Mittal launched Hike Sticker Chat — a messenger app focused on emojis to communicate with close friends, peers and significant others. In an interview with Business Insider, Mittal shared that he plans on "creating a new social experience" to help monetise the app called HikeLand. And, it has nothing to do with e-commerce. "In 2020, this is going to be the year that we start experimenting with revenue," he said and it doesn't necessarily need to reflect in the real world.  Revenue is just another feature In 2020, Hike plans to find out what consumers are willing to pay for and what can be given away for free. "Revenue is one more feature. Building revenue is also a part of the product development process," said Mittal. The aim is to take Hike Sticker Chat into a new era using technology to build an upgraded user experience around the <keyword id="8335972" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="hikemoji">HikeMoji</keyword>. Mittal describes it as, "a new user experience beyond messaging that's a safe place for people to hang out." He explains that the HikeMoji will be able to do multiple things within HikeLand. That will be the ecosystem around which Hike will build a virtual economy business model. Virtual economy is the untapped golden goose Mittal believes that since payments have not become seamless, microtransactions are going to emerge in a big way — and the virtual economy is the golden goose that no-one has tapped into. "Virtual economy business model is the one that's completely untapped in this market," he claimed. According to him, as virtual communities emerge and multiple verticals are created, economies can be integrated into them to add a layer to the consumer experience. Hike — as a 'bits-based' business — has no ties to the offline world, according to Mittal. There are no warehouses, no logistics and no delivery mechanisms. "We have already seen this [virtual economy] happen. More in the East than in the West. And, that's the model we're going to pursue," he explained. Hanging out online Hike's peak usage is between 10:00 pm to 12:00 am. According to Mittal, it's not because people are messaging or sending stickers at the time — it's simply because they want to hang out online with their friends after they're done with "family time". "If we want to build a safe place for people to hang out in 2020 for close friends or with their significant other, what would that look like? And, that's the big step that we're taking with HikeMoji — and HikeLand," said Mittal. Doubling down on existing bets In addition to launching HikeLand, Mittal will be doubling down on the bets that he's already made. In 2018, the Hike super app was unbundled into two verticals — messaging and gaming. On one side was Hike Sticker Chat and on the other was investment, a gaming platform called <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/zostel-and-zorooms-founder-has-a-new-fund-for-game-developers/articleshow/70301357.cms">WinZo</a>.. News, on the other hand, was dropped altogether. "We have to double down on both these products. How do we get Sticker Chat to a much bigger user base? How do we land HikeMoji and HikeLand extremely well? On the WinZo side, how do we grow the scale we have today to be three to four times bigger," said Mittal In addition to growing what's already working for the company, Hike will continue to work on the innovation pipeline as well.  Mittal also added that the company is looking for typical quintessential technical roles — including front-end engineers, backend engineers, ML scientists, UX designers. However, he emphasised that they hire very ‘selectively.’ “We are looking to expand our team but we hire very selectively. That’s because we like running small teams. We will at maximum add 50 people in 2020 — taking the total headcount to 200 employees,” he said. The seven-year old chatting platform is now set to launch its new feature with enhanced user experience called HikeLand. The company is also looking to experiment with revenues this year — to trade off between what can be offered free and what has to be kept as a paid service. Today's rate hike decision probably won't surprise anyone, as markets have long priced in a 25-basis-point move for the February and March meetings. If all goes as planned, this will mark the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-news-january-dow-nasdaq-economy-sp500-imf-economy-2023-1">eighth consecutive rate hike</a> since March last year, which falls in line with what the Fed warned in December: "The Committee anticipates that ongoing increases in the target range will be appropriate in order to attain a stance of monetary policy that is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/are-we-in-a-recession-now-2022-12">sufficiently restrictive</a> to return inflation to 2 percent over time." That means more rate hikes are on the way. But markets have yet to act as if that were the case — stocks have enjoyed their best January since 2019.All eyes will be on Jerome Powell as he steps up to the podium today. To Michael Reinking, the New York Stock Exchange's senior market strategist, the chairman will likely try to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/are-we-in-a-recession-now-2022-12">temper market enthusiasm</a> with another hawkish message. "[Powell's] message will likely continue to focus on the duration of time rates will stay at a restrictive stance," Reinking said. "How he couches where we are in achieving that <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-news-january-dow-nasdaq-economy-sp500-imf-economy-2023-1">restrictive stance</a> will be closely watched."Just like before December's meeting, stocks have rallied leading up to the decision. Reinking pointed out that markets are just about desensitized to hawkish commentary.Gene Goldman, the chief investment officer for Cetera Investment Management, told me on a call yesterday that rate hikes can take 12 to 15 months to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/are-we-in-a-recession-now-2022-12">have an impact on the economy</a>, which means repercussions from last year's first tightening efforts are only now beginning to emerge. Goldman said he'll be watching for three things in Powell's speech: <ul><li>Powell will talk tough: "He's going to push back on financial markets. The dot plot says rates will be between 5% to 5.25% by the end of this year, but markets are pricing in 4.5%."</li><li>More rate hikes are coming: "Powell might acknowledge that the economy is slowing down and inflation is easing, but he's also going to signal the Fed's job is not over."</li><li>This time could be different: "It's possible Powell signals that we won't need to push the economy into a recession. The labor market and housing market are different than they were in 2008, so maybe there's a different path forward here."</li></ul>In any case, according to Reinking, unless Powell musters up some serious aggression, any messaging will ultimately <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/are-we-in-a-recession-now-2022-12">fall upon deaf ears</a>. "[That] could add to the squeeze that has been ongoing since the start of the year," he explained. US stocks fall as investors prepare for another interest rate hike from the Fed

<keyword id="6354504" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reliance-Jio">Reliance Jio</keyword> would possibly acquire a <keyword id="54765" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="100" keywordseo="VoIP">VoIP</keyword> (Voice Over Internet Protocol) licence but may not offer free calls through this route, as a government panel upheld the principles of '<keyword id="6391709" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Net-neutrality">net neutrality</keyword>', a research note said today. 

	Besides, international revenue of telecom operators may remain under pressure as traffic would continue to move to VoIP players who offer free calls barring nominal data charges. 
 "Given R-Jio's lack of traditional voice offering and considering that its Vo-LTE (4G) offering may not be mature immediately, we see a possibility that Jio may look to acquire a VOIP license," Bank of America <keyword id="6374847" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Merrill-Lynch">Merrill Lynch</keyword> (BofA-ML) said in a research note. 

	"In such a scenario, we do not see the possibility of free VOIP calls being offered," it added. 
 

	An official panel on net neutrality has proposed regulation of domestic calls on Internet-based apps like Skype, Whatsapp and Viber by putting them on par with services offered by telecom operators. 
 

	Commenting on this, BofA-ML said this is slightly positive for existing telcos like Bharti/Idea, "as cannibalisation of voice revenues from VOIP uptake will likely be slower". 
 According to BofA-ML, existing OTT (Over the top) players like Skype, Viber, WhatsApp and <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> Talk may give OTT license a miss as these companies are not telecom service providers and may not make an exception for one country. 

	"However, the home grown OTTs like Jio chat/Hike may possibly opt to take the license which may allow them to gain traction in the messaging space which is currently dominated by foreign OTT players," it added. 
 

	The report however noted that since VOIP traffic is difficult to monitor, the arbitrage opportunity between international VOIP and domestic VOIP may lead to increase in illegal VOIP traffic.

Futures on the tech-heavy Nasdaq were down the most, by 41 points, or 1%. Dave Lutz at JonesTrading noted in his '<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trader-chat-april-27-2016-4">trader chat</a>' note that it's rare to see the PowerShares QQQ exchange-traded fund - which is heavily weighted with large tech companies - being down 1.1%. Apple fell by as much as 7% in pre-market trading after the company <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-earnings-q2">missed estimates for earnings</a> and reported its first year-over-year decline in quarterly drop since 2003. Also not helping matters is a downgrade from Goldman Sachs analysts, who removed the stock from their "Conviction Buy" list and lowered their price target to $136 from $155.The drop pre-market took Apple shares to as low as $96.55, meaning they still see some upside. And elsewhere on Wall Street, most analysts are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-earnings-were-awful-and-analysts-loved-it-2016-4">still bullish on Apple</a>.Twitter is also getting hit, down 14% pre-market after <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-reports-q1-2016-earnings-results-2016-4">missing on first-quarter revenues</a> and giving Wall Street projections for second-quarter revenues that were weaker than they had expected. The store, first announced two months ago, effectively works as a marketplace for AI apps built with OpenAI's technology.You can think of it as an AI equivalent to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apples-app-store-has-become-an-ad-plagued-version-of-its-former-self-2022-11">Apple's App Store.</a>In a blogpost, OpenAI said developers had already created three million "custom versions of ChatGPT," with many starting to share them for the wider public to use. There are GPT-based apps that help you with everything from <a target="_blank" href="https://chat.openai.com/g/g-KpF6lTka3-alltrails">finding trails for your next hike</a> to learning code.It isn't clear if OpenAI plans to take a commission from the GPT Store in the same way <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/app-store-developers-can-skirt-30-fee-outside-links-court-2023-4">Apple takes a 30% cut</a> from developers placing apps on its App Store. The store is only accessible to premium ChatGPT users, who pay a monthly $20 fee to access a faster version of the app, as well as teams and enterprises paying a fee.Apple's charge on developers has been a source of controversy, having sparked lawsuits from the likes of Epic Games. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/01/10/apple-app-store-revenue-update-shows-slowing-growth-.html#:~:text=If%20all%20developers%20paid%20a,in%20lower%2C%20around%20%2470%20billion.">CNBC analysis last year</a> estimated that Apple could have grossed between $70 billion and $85 billion from App Store commissions. In Altman's case, he was <a target="_blank" href="https://openai.com/blog/openai-announces-leadership-transition">accused of being "not consistently candid in his communications with the board."</a>But much like Jobs, Altman's importance was deemed too great to his company.The likes of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/satya-nadella-silicon-valley-openai-sam-altman-2023-11">Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella</a>, who has backed Altman and OpenAI with a multi-billion dollar investment, got personally involved in his reinstatement as CEO just weeks later.
