coronavirus cases and the total tally stood at 14.35 lakh. Not just the daily cases, but the overall cases have also taken a huge leap in a months' time. India's journey to over 33 lakh cases precisely took six months and twenty-eight days since the emergence of the first case on January 30. On July 17, the country had logged 10 lakh cases, which then doubled to 20 lakh in 20 days, on August 7 and added another 10 lakh on August 23. It has now added 3 lakh cases in four days. As per latest figures released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the total caseload stood at 33,10,234 while the death toll rose to 60,472. The number of recoveries also increased to 25,23,771. Recoveries are 3.5 times the active case, which stand at 7,25,991. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday said that the early identification through aggressive testing, comprehensive surveillance, and contact tracing, and focus on timely and efficient clinical treatment of patients has ensured speedy recoveries and has also kept the case fatality rate low in some states. Many states and union territories in India have better recovery rate and fatality rate than the national average. The overall recovery rate of the country is 76.24 per cent, while the fatality rate is 1.82 per cent of novel coronavirus patients. There are five states and one union territory -- Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Dadar and Nagar Haveli, Haryana, and Gujarat where the recovery rate is more than 80 per cent, while another four have recovery rate more than 70 per cent. The recovery rate was 7.10 per cent on March 25 when the lockdown was imposed and slowly increased to 7.1 per cent during the first lockdown; 11.42 per cent in second; 26.59 in third lockdown and now 41.61 per cent in the last phase of the lockdown. The recovery rate was 63.92 per cent on July 27, exactly a month ago. The national capital was the first state to cross the 90 per cent recovery rate, this month. On Wednesday, however, a sudden-spike brought it down to 89.82 per cent. More than 1.48 lakh people out of the 1.65 lakh infected so far have been declared recovered. The case fatality rate, which is the proportion of people who die from the disease among individuals diagnosed, is below one per cent in Assam, Kerala, Bihar, Odisha, Telangana, Tripura, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh. Besides this, there is a steady decline in the positivity rate, the percentage of tests that return positive, despite an exponential increase in testing. It has come down to eight per cent from eleven per cent during the first week of August. Another parameter called basic reproduction number or R value which is used to measure the rate at which the infection is spreading, has also decreased in a weeks' time. The value has come down to 1.04 from 1.05 in a week. It was 1.83 in April. The disease is considered to be under control when its value falls below one. India is reporting highest coronavirus cases in the world from last three weeks

Seoul, <keyword id="5565" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="South-Korea">South Korea</keyword> on Sunday reported 1,097 <keyword id="8873443" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="New-coronavirus-cases">new coronavirus cases</keyword>, the highest-ever single-day spike after staying above 1,000 for five straight days, raising the <keyword id="10465188" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="overall-infection-tally">overall infection tally</keyword> to 49,665. The <keyword id="9772034" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="daily-number">daily number</keyword> of infections hovered above 100 for 43 days since November 8 due to small cluster infections in Seoul and its surrounding Gyeonggi province, as well as imported cases, reports Xinhua news agency. For the past week, the daily average number of infections was 986. The cluster infections were linked to religious facilities, nursing homes and workplaces, as well as gatherings among families and acquaintances. Of the new cases, 470 were Seoul residents and 244 were people residing in Gyeonggi province. Twenty-five were imported from overseas, lifting the combined figure to 5,082. Fifteen more deaths were confirmed, increasing the death toll at 674. The total fatality rate stood at 1.36 per cent. A total of 388 more patients were discharged from quarantine after making full recovery, pulling up the combined number to 34,722. The total recovery rate was 69.91%. Since January 3, the country has tested more than 3.68 million people, among whom 3,493,954 tested negative for the virus and 139,475 are being checked. By K J M Varma Beijing, May 18 () China has reported 25 new COVID-19 patients, the health authorities said on Monday, as 14 asymptomatic cases were detected in Wuhan, the first epicentre of the coronavirus where officials are doing mass testing of the city's entire 11 million population, taking the number of such cases in the city to 337, the highest in the country.The death toll in China remained at 4,634 on Sunday with no new fatalities reported. China's National Health Commission (NHC) reported seven new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 18 asymptomatic cases on Sunday.Jilin province where the government has implemented strict control measures in the last few days following reports of clusters of cases in Jilin city reported two cases on Sunday, while Shanghai city has reported one.As of Sunday, the overall confirmed cases in China had reached 82,954, including 82 patients who are still being treated, and 78,238 people who have been discharged after recovery. Also on Sunday, 18 new asymptomatic cases including two from abroad were reported in China, taking the total number under medical observation to 448, the NHC said. Asymptomatic cases pose a problem as the patients are tested COVID-19 positive but develop no symptoms such as fever, cough or sore throat. However, they pose a risk of spreading the disease to others. Wuhan which is undergoing mass testing of the city's entire over 11 million population to determine the prevalence of the virus has reported no new confirmed cases, but 14 new asymptomatic infections, taking the number of such cases in the city to 337, the highest in the country, according to the figures released by the local health commission on Sunday.The death toll in Hubei province stood at 4,512, including 3,869 in Wuhan. The province so far has reported 68,134 confirmed COVID-19 cases in total, including 50,339 in Wuhan, according to the officials figures. As the cases dropped, China on Sunday exempted people in Beijing from wearing masks, signalling that the virus is under control in the national capital.As the virus is abating in the country, China is opening up all its business including entertainment centres like Shanghai Disneyl and to show that it has managed to control the dreaded virus while the world is struggling with it with lockdowns and massive casualties.
