The Magenta Line saw 6.19 lakh passengers, followed by the Green Line with 4.12 lakh commuters, 81,985 in Airport Line, 57,701 in Rapid Metro, and 50,128, in the Grey Line, as per the data. Thick grey haze continued to choke Delhi for the third consecutive day on Tuesday, with pollution levels remaining alarmingly high at 488 in the 'severe plus' category. To encourage more people to use the metro in this scenario, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is running 60 extra trips on weekdays, offering more capacity than usual, an official statement said. The DMRC has recorded its 25 highest passenger journeys since August this year, the statement added. It emphasised that the more people opt for the metro over private vehicles, the greater the reduction in vehicular emissions, which will help improve the air quality of the city and its surrounding areas. In addition, the DMRC has introduced several measures to make travel more convenient for passengers, the statement read. These include the ability to book single or multiple journey tickets through various digital platforms, allowing passengers to plan their journeys anytime and anywhere without the need to stand in queues at the station. Furthermore, partnerships with organisations such as IRCTC, NCRTC, ITPO, and others have made it easier for people to not only travel by metro but also access interconnected travel options, along with various offers and events, all with seamless ease, the statement said. On July 24, 2023, the ridership reached 2,12,490, followed by 2,18,635 on July 25, 2023. The highest recorded ridership was on July 26, 2023, with 2,22,290 passengers. This surge in ridership has been observed specifically on the Metro 2A and 7 lines, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation said in a release.

City officials and Austin's transportation authority, CapMetro, are proposing a solution for some of these woes: Project Connect, a now-$11.6 billion public-transportation plan that includes a network of light-rail lines, an underground subway, and an expanded bus system. The Austin Transit Partnership, the independent government corporation tasked with implementing the plan, believes that increasing public transit will make Austin safer, easier and faster to navigate, and more sustainable. And advocates predict it will generate revenue by bringing new businesses and jobs to the city. <div type="image" title="ProjectConnect layout" height="1273" width="1024" msid="100169656" hostid="261" sizebytes="87018"></div>Austinites voted to approve Project Connect in 2020 when its total price tag was $7.1 billion. Almost three years later, though, policymakers and residents are still debating whether the good it may bring to Austin is worth its ever-increasing price tag. Critics counter that building new stations and train tracks <a href="https://communityimpact.com/austin/central-austin/transportation/2022/03/24/city-spends-first-of-300m-project-connect-anti-displacement-dollars-on-east-austin-housing-near-future-transit-line/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">could disproportionately displace residents in poorer communities and neighborhoods of color</a> and that residents could be left with an ineffective system that costs too much and that too few people will use.Despite these objections, Greg Canally, the executive director of ATP, maintains that Project Connect would boost Austin's economy in the long run, in part by encouraging the development of housing and other buildings along the new train lines."There is permanency about where we're building," Canally said. "We've seen around the country where that permanency allows for investments to happen, especially around stations."<h2>Critics say Project Connect is too expensive, outdated, and might cater to residents with higher incomes</h2><a href="https://ourmobilityourfuture.com/our-position/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Our Mobil­ity Our Future</a>, a coalition of business owners, community activists, and current and former elected officials, argues that the project costs too much and the new rail system that's being proposed will quickly become outdated.Austin residents voted to approve Project Connect in 2020, when $5.8 billion was earmarked for the new light rail lines. By 2022, though, that amount grew to $10.3 billion for the light rail alone, and about another $1 billion to upgrade and expand other train options and the bus system — in part due to the increased costs of purchasing land and paying for construction."The cost of this light-rail system will shackle and burden many future Austin generations from access to funds necessary to address general community and mobility needs based on the reality of the future," the coalition's website <a href="https://ourmobilityourfuture.com/our-position/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reads</a>, and that "the proposed outdated transit plan must be defeated." <div type="image" title="Dr. Chandra R. Bhat smiling" height="2110" width="3161" msid="100169658" hostid="261" sizebytes="269706"></div>Then there is the issue of equity. Chandra R. Bhat, a professor of engineering at the University of Texas, doubts the proposed light rail will benefit Austinites of all backgrounds equally. "Rail users tend to be on the higher side of income," Bhat said. "If we build these rail lines, some of which are intended to serve low-income and people of color, the ridership might not be great." The American Public Transportation Association found that rail riders are more likely to <a href="https://www.apta.com/wp-content/uploads/Resources/resources/reportsandpublications/Documents/APTA-Who-Rides-Public-Transportation-2017.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">identify as white</a>. White Americans make up 46% of all rail riders, while Black riders make up just 19%.Bhat said this disparity is likely because rail rides tend to be more expensive than other forms of public transportation, such as buses, and that can be a barrier to lower-income people using the system.Data from CapMetro <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/20982841-capmetro-title-vi-program-2021#document/p109/a2080425" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shows</a> that only 25% of its riders who use public trains and buses earn more than $30,000 a year. A daily pass for Austin's current bus system, the MetroBus, costs considerably less: $2.50, or $1.25 for a reduced fare. "There is an equity issue that must be kept in mind," Bhat said. "The bottom line is the 'haves' already can get from one place to another. It is the people who are totally dependent upon the public-transportation system that need more options. These equity considerations need to be thought through carefully."<h2> </h2><h2>Public-transit advocates say the plan is worth the cost </h2>Supporters of Project Connect are open to lowering its price tag. In March of 2023, ATP unveiled five scaled-down versions of its light-rail plan that cut costs from the inflated $10.3 billion to under $5 billion. <div type="image" title="3D renderings of Project Connect." height="968" width="1291" msid="100169662" hostid="261" sizebytes="56384"></div>And in an acknowledgment of the sometimes prohibitively expensive cost of riding trains, Project Connect organizers <a href="https://www.projectconnect.com/docs/librariesprovider2/default-document-library/pcon-220425-mgmt-report-web-final-1-up-opt.pdf?sfvrsn=343363f_2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">plan to implement a reduced fare they've called an Equifare</a> — of $3, compared to the regular rate of $7 — that will be available to those who have a household income below 200% of the federal poverty level.Advocates still believe that it would be a net positive for the city. And many people agree that faster transportation is needed. Take Austin resident Michael Hill, who doesn't own a car. He takes three buses and spends an hour and 15 minutes each way commuting to work, <a href="https://www.austinchronicle.com/news/2022-11-18/cap-metro-wants-its-pre-pandemic-groove-back/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Austin Chronicle reported in 2022</a>.But on a larger scale, Project Connect supporters say that public transportation provides better access to healthcare, education, employment, and affordable housing. There is evidence that cities with mass-transit systems tend to be <a href="https://cayimby.org/how-transit-makes-housing-more-affordable/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more affordable</a> in terms of housing and transportation than those without. More than just winning over opponents, the ATP may need to once again convince voters of the merits of its proposal. <a href="https://www.kut.org/transportation/2023-04-24/project-connect-could-be-on-the-ballot-again-this-november" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New legislation</a> introduced in March by the Texas House of Representatives would require an election before a body can issue debt or sell bonds, which the city would do to help pay for Project Connect.<div type="image" title="3D rendering of Project Connect." height="1456" width="2656" msid="100169664" hostid="261" sizebytes="106196"></div>Austin still has time to execute Project Connect or a revised version of it. But Texas Monthly's Michael Agresta <a href="https://www.texasmonthly.com/news-politics/austin-tech-industry-silicon-valley-san-francisco/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">notes that Austin can still grow in a responsible and careful way</a> to avoid the fate that befell San Francisco, which suffers from social ills including unaffordable rents, a vast wealth gap, and a growing homeless population."The bright spot for Austin is that, again, the city still has time to make better and more equitable decisions. Is it possible to manage drastic changes in the cityscape in a way that actually serves poor and minority stakeholders? Where did San Francisco go wrong, and where can Austin do better?" Agresta asked in his 2021 article. "Signs of changes in Austin city politics," which include support for the Project Connect proposal, "suggest that the citizenry is engaged with these questions."

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Riding public transit could be <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-decide-when-to-go-out-during-coronavirus-pandemic-2020-7">a lower-risk activity</a> than going to the gym or returning to the office, new research suggests.</li><li>But people with long commutes have a higher risk of infection. </li><li>The risk of <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> transmission on <keyword id="6366667" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="subway">subway</keyword>s or buses also depends on the size of a crowd, the duration of a commute, and whether a bus or subway is well-ventilated. </li></ul>As <keyword id="72226" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="New-York-City">New York City</keyword> began to reopen, people naturally returned to the subway. Despite concerns that the transit system <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-does-new-york-have-so-many-cases-of-coronavirus-2020-4">boosted the coronavirus' spread</a> at the start of the pandemic, average daily subway ridership more than tripled from April to July.Now, research suggests the risk of transmission on public transit might be lower than initially assumed.Contract tracing in Paris <a href="https://www.santepubliquefrance.fr/maladies-et-traumatismes/maladies-et-infections-respiratoires/infection-a-coronavirus/documents/bulletin-national/covid-19-point-epidemiologique-du-4-juin-2020">found that of 150 coronavirus outbreaks</a> between May 9 and June 3, none were linked to the city's public transit systems. <a href="https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/05/japan-ends-its-covid-19-state-emergency">Japan's contact tracers</a>, meanwhile, also found no outbreaks associated with commuter trains as of May. A similar story played out <a href="https://www.ages.at/service/service-presse/pressemeldungen/epidemiologische-abklaerung-am-beispiel-covid-19/">in Austria</a>: None of the 355 outbreaks there in April and May were transit-related."New Yorkers are voting with their feet," Mayor Bill de Blasio said in reference to the city's increased ridership in June. Mass transit, he added, is still the "heartbeat of the city."As more people resume their daily commutes or venture outside their neighborhoods, epidemiologists suggest a few ways to reduce the risk of infection on public transportation: Wear a mask at all times, choose the least crowded transit option, make the trip as short as possible, and prioritize well-ventilated subway cars or buses.<h2>The duration of a trip matters</h2><div type="image" title="New York coronavirus subway" height="4236" width="6347" msid="77419298" hostid="261"></div>Data about the role of transit in spreading the coronavirus is difficult to gather. In contact tracing, people are more likely to recall encounters with a coworker or family member than a person they sat next to among a sea of commuters. They're also unlikely to know the people they've shared a train with, making it difficult for experts to track and test those individuals. So the risk of subway ridership could be underestimated.Still, it's safe to assume that the longer a commute, the higher the risk. "The nature of having a long subway or bus ride is that you will be around people for more than 15 minutes in close proximity to them, so those are going to be transmission risks," Scott Weisenberg, an infectious-disease specialist at NYU Langone Health, told Business Insider.Researchers at the University of Southampton recently <a href="https://academic.oup.com/cid/advance-article/doi/10.1093/cid/ciaa1057/5877944">attempted to trace the virus' spread</a> among people who sat within three rows of an infected person on China's high-speed trains. On average, the infection rate was around 0.32%, they found. But the rate increased by 0.15% every hour passengers remained onboard. The risk also rose with proximity to an infected person. Passengers sitting next to the sick person had the highest infection rate: 3.5%. People in the same row had an infection rate of 1.5%. (The study didn't account for whether passengers wore face masks.) That risk is still relatively low compared to other settings: Chinese researchers estimated that the infection rate for <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/laninf/article/PIIS1473-3099(20)30471-0/fulltext">people who share the same residential address</a> was around 17%. An <a href="https://www.eurosurveillance.org/content/10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2020.25.29.2001352#html_fulltext">outbreak at an Israeli high school in Ma</a>y had an infection rate of 13%, while several <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6920e2.htm">church events in Arkansas</a> were found to have infection rates of at least 38%. At <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6931e1.htm?s_cid=mm6931e1_w">an overnight camp in Georgia</a>, 44% of people got sick, and at least 53% caught the virus at <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6919e6.htm">a choir practice in Washington</a>.<h2>Choose the less crowded option</h2>Weisenberg said his first priority when deciding whether to take the subway or bus is crowd size."In my neighborhood, the buses are much more crowded than the subways right now, so I would consider those higher risks," he said.Some subway systems have instituted social-distancing guidelines. In Rome, for example, authorities placed stickers to block off seats. But most residents there use private cars, motorcycles, or taxis to get around anyway, according to the International Association of Public Transport. Asking riders to maintain social distance might be less feasible in places like New York City or Hong Kong, where people are more transit-dependent. <div type="image" title="rome subway coronavirus" height="3240" width="4860" msid="77419310" hostid="261"></div>Reducing the number of riders per subway car could also create pile-ups in the subway station, Weisenberg said."Having more buses and more subways, having more frequent [service] to the degree that they have the capacity to do that — those are ways that they can help reduce the crowding on subways rather than trying to reduce the total number of riders," he added.But even social distancing may not protect riders with long commutes.The University of Southampton study determined that a distance of more than 3 feet was enough to protect passengers who spent an hour or less in the same row as an infected person. But after two hours, less than 8 feet of distance might not prevent transmission, the researchers found.That's partly because talking, coughing, or exhaling can <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/letter-who-coronavirus-airborne-transmission-precautions-2020-7">release virus-laden aerosols</a> that could linger in the air. So transit passengers could get sick just by breathing the same air as an infected person — especially if they're in crowded, indoor areas with poor ventilation. <h2>Good ventilation is critical</h2>New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority has been working to improve ventilation on public transit since March. The city is replacing air filters every 36 days now, rather than every 72 days. It's also testing new filters to see if they can kill pathogens like the coronavirus."With regard to the fresh air exchange rate per hour, we are in pretty good shape," Mark Dowd, the <keyword id="170979" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="MTA">MTA</keyword>'s chief innovation officer, told Business Insider.Fresh air circulates on New York City subways at a rate of 18 to 25 air changes per hour, he said. The CDC recommends a minimum of six air changes per hour for negative-pressure rooms at hospitals.Buses, meanwhile, could lower the risk of transmission by keeping windows open and opening and closing doors more frequently, Weisenberg said.<h2>Disinfecting is less important</h2><div type="image" title="NYC subway disinfectant" height="3635" width="4841" msid="77419316" hostid="261"></div>Many transit systems, including the MTA, have ramped up daily cleaning services. The MTA is also testing new cleaning technologies at night, like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uv-light-kills-coronavirus-surfaces-safe-for-humans-2020-7">using UV lamps to sanitize subways and buses</a>. Research suggests that the coronavirus can <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-long-can-coronavirus-live-on-surfaces-how-to-disinfect-2020-3">survive on surfaces</a> for several hours to several days, but surfaces aren't the primary method of transmission. "I encourage the MTA to do whatever they can to make the subway and buses safer. However, this is a virus that for the most part spreads from person to person through prolonged close contacts," Weisenberg said. "All the planning in the world is not going to reduce those."The University of Southampton study found that passengers who immediately sat in a seat used by an infected person had an infection rate of less than 0.1%. But disinfection is still critical for high-touch surfaces like poles or the edges of seats."In my local subway stop, they seem to spend a lot of time cleaning the floors and windows," Weisenberg said. "They should really be focusing on those areas that people are going to touch and then potentially infect themselves by touching their mouth or their nose."The best protection, he added, is one the MTA already requires: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/face-masks-effective-in-protecting-against-coronavirus-2020-6">masks</a>."I was taking the bus home last Friday and it was just absolutely packed person to person," Weisenberg said. "I wore my best mask for that day."

Tech stocks plummet as surging Treasury yields rock market

New York, Apr 29 (AP) Haunting images of an empty Times Square and the daily accounting of hundreds of fatalities in New York City have reinforced the idea of the coronavirus as an urban contagion.That may obscure an equally sobering truth: Many of the city's suburbs have been hit just as hard. In some, there have been more fatalities per capita than in super-dense Manhattan.The virus's rampage through the New York metro region, from the well-to-do towns along Connecticut's coastline to the bedroom communities of northern New Jersey and Long Island, offers a counterweight to the notion of the suburbs, with their plentiful open spaces, as safe havens."You expect to see it spread more rapidly in densely populated areas like cities, but it does that anywhere the virus is introduced and where people are in contact with other people," said Dr. Stephen Morse, professor of epidemiology at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in New York. "All it needs is fertile soil because it spreads quite well, unfortunately." The first sustained outbreak to be detected in the New York metropolitan area occurred in the suburb of New Rochelle, where an attorney who had attended large gatherings at a local synagogue was the first to test positive.Another cluster sprang up 5 miles west of the city in Teaneck, New Jersey. The first New Jersey resident to die, 69-year-old horse racing veteran John Brennan, lived in northern New Jersey and worked at a racetrack in Yonkers, a New York suburb.According to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, Rockland County, New York, has reported roughly 3,500 positive cases per 100,000 residents, nearly triple the rate in Manhattan and more than double the rate in Brooklyn. Westchester County, which includes New Rochelle, has a rate of nearly 2,900 cases per 100,000 residents.If the five New Jersey counties closest to New York were a country, they would have recorded the 12th most cases in the world, more than 59,000 through Tuesday.At Hudson Regional Hospital in Secaucus, New Jersey, just west of Manhattan, the volume of patients had quadrupled by early April, forcing the emergency room to divert patients several times, hospital CEO Dr. Nizar Kifaieh said, though the numbers have decreased recently.Dr. Tanaya Bhowmick, an infectious disease physician and assistant professor at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey, said her patients who have underlying immune issues have been taking precautions. But she recently saw a group of youths playing basketball in her suburban neighborhood."There might be the perception that they're a little more safe here, which obviously isn't true," she said.Tracking the virus's path can yield some surprises. The first several people to test positive for the coronavirus in Connecticut actually had a strain that was linked to the outbreak in Washington state, said Nathan Grubaugh, an assistant professor of epidemiology at the Yale School of Public Health. He is leading a study with other researchers that is using genomic testing to chart the spread of the virus across the U.S. and into Connecticut.After those first cases, data showed Connecticut residents were testing positive for a virus similar to the strains in New York, which have been linked to those in Europe, Grubaugh said.It wasn't surprising to Stamford Mayor David Martin that his city of about 130,000 people would be one of the hardest hit in the state.Downtown Stamford is less than 10 miles from the New York state line and less than an hour from Manhattan by train. Nearly 1,800 Stamford residents have tested positive for the coronavirus, by far the highest total among the state's 169 cities and towns."The reality is that ... in normal times we have 30,000 people get on or get off the train at the Stamford train station and a big chunk of those people are traveling to or from New York City," Martin said. "With a wide diversity of socioeconomic status that are basically right here next to the New York epicenter, it has been a struggle for us." Commuting patterns can partly explain the virus's spread in the New York region. Subway ridership in the city tops 5 million on an average weekday, and according to a recent study by the city's planning commission, about 1 million people travel into New York each day from the surrounding counties - and a quarter-million go in the opposite direction - many on public transportation that is routinely overcrowded.The picture is more complicated, though. An Associated Press study of COVID-19 cases by zip code in New York City has found, for example, more cases per capita in Staten Island, the least congested of the five boroughs and the one not served by the city's subway system, than in some of the more densely populated areas of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.Bergen County Executive James Tedesco, whose county has the highest number of cases in New Jersey, said officials were initially able to track the virus's spread along the most heavily used bus and train lines. Narrator: Why is COVID-19 hitting some communities harder than others? And who exactly has been hit hardest? We're seeing this happen across the country. But to better understand the divide, we zeroed in on two New York City boroughs: The Bronx and Manhattan.Even though Manhattan has more people, The Bronx has more cases and more deaths. We wanted to understand the reasons for this gap, so we compared the boroughs based on three criteria: why more people are getting infected, being hospitalized, and dying from COVID-19. And it's revealed this pandemic is attacking two very different Americas. Let's look at why there's a difference in infection numbers between the two boroughs. We'll start with income.The Bronx is the poorest borough in the city, with a median income of $38,000, compared to Manhattan's $82,000. Almost 60% of people in the Bronx are paying more than they can afford for housing, which has led to more multigenerational housing in the Bronx and more residents in public housing than any other borough. For every apartment in the Bronx, there are 2.8 people living in it. Compare that to the two people living in every apartment in Manhattan. More people at home likely means more people get sick.Overall, there's 350,000 more housing units in Manhattan than the Bronx, and better-quality housing. See this map? Most residents in the Bronx are dealing with maintenance problems, like leaks, rats, cracks, plumbing, and broken toilets. These issues alone make it more challenging to live at home, not to mention having to work from home because of COVID-19. That is, if you can work from home.According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, of those Americans making less than $33,000 a year, which are these neighborhoods in the Bronx, 9% of people could work from home. Whereas of those people making more than $79,000 a year, all of these neighborhoods in Manhattan, 60% could work from home. On the other hand, in the Bronx, residents who can't work from home are most likely out of a job and tight on money, or they're essential workers.Think grocery-store clerks, transit employees, trash collectors, healthcare workers, many of those people you see daily out on the front lines. 17% of frontline workers in New York City are coming from the Bronx, while just 12% are from Manhattan. And for the majority of these essential workers, getting to their job means taking the subway. Subway ridership has dropped across the city, but not by the same amount. In Manhattan, 75% fewer people are riding, but in the Bronx, ridership has dropped only 55%. So trains to and from the Bronx can be packed, especially with reduced subway services. Plus, people from the Bronx face longer commutes than people in Manhattan. On average, 12.7 minutes longer of standing body to body with that person who's maybe coughing.OK, let's move on to the second criterion. Let's say someone in each borough does get the virus. What will influence whether they become hospitalized? The Bronx has had over 10,000 hospitalizations. Manhattan? About 6,000. Every year, New York counties are ranked based on their health. Last year, Manhattan was sixth best in the state. The Bronx? Dead last, out of 62 counties. This is based on things like access to clinical care, the environment, and preexisting conditions.The Bronx has higher rates of preexisting conditions like asthma, heart disease, and obesity, conditions that increase the risk of a severe COVID-19 case. To explain why this is, we're gonna have to go deep. We'll start with obesity rates between the two boroughs. Studies have shown that poor diets and lack of exercise are linked to obesity. And in the Bronx, families facing money problems or limited time are forced to turn to cheaper, prepackaged foods. 87% of kids in the Bronx rely on free or reduced school lunches, which are packed with salt and fat. Plus, the Bronx has almost double the amount of food stamps per individual compared to Manhattan.But the greatest contributor to diet, though, is access. And the Bronx has historically had some of the worst food deserts in the country, where it's hard to find affordable and healthy food close to home. All of these factors have created a lack of healthy resources for generations in the Bronx. They lead to unhealthy eating habits and high rates of obesity and diabetes, both preexisting conditions that increase your risk of death from COVID-19. On the other hand, in Manhattan, <keyword id="6360041" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="life">life</keyword> expectancy and access to healthy food is much higher. People not only have more access to grocery stores, they also have more gyms to choose from. Simply put, these things and disposable income make it a lot easier to be healthier here.Another preexisting condition that skyrockets risk of COVID-19 hospitalization: asthma. In big cities, studies have shown pollution is a major cause of asthma. Pollution is bad across New York City, but the Bronx has the highest rates of asthma-related emergency-room visits. There's even a place nicknamed Asthma Alley in the South Bronx. It's surrounded by four highways and sanitation and sewage facilities. There's also a bunch of trucks coming and going from all of these distribution centers, these food wholesalers, and the FreshDirect distribution center here and the Wall Street Journal and New York Post printing press here. At last count, asthma hospitalizations were 27 times higher in this area than the rest of the city. Bad asthma equals a higher risk of being hospitalized with COVID-19 and needing a ventilator to help you breathe. But it gets worse when you take into account how accessible medical professionals are in these areas.In Manhattan, there's one physician for every 750 people. In the Bronx, there's one physician for every 1,770 people. There are also fewer hospital beds in the Bronx. Manhattan has almost double the amount of hospitals for only a 15% larger population. Why the Bronx has almost double the coronavirus cases as Manhattan

Real estate firm CityRealty has unveiled a proposal for an urban gondola system, known as the <a href="http://www.eastriverskyway.com/" target="_blank">East River Skyway</a>, that would connect Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens.
The design was presented at the <a href="http://mkbrooklynsummit.com/" target="_blank">Massey Knakal Brooklyn Real Estate Summit</a> by Daniel Levy, president of CityRealty, and was inspired by the efficiency of high-speed gondolas in London, Rio de Janeiro, and Germany.
According to CityRealty, the proposed gondolas would span the East River, be safer than buses and subways, and reduce travel time by an estimated 20-30 minutes for Brooklyn residents commuting into Manhattan.

According to CityRealty, the gondolas would also have zero emissions and be eco-friendly.
The first phase of the project would connect Williamsburg to downtown Manhattan, South Williamsburg, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Later phases would possibly extend the system to Greenpoint, Long Island City, Midtown East, DUMBO, and South Street Seaport stations, among others.

"New gondola technology would be an effective means to address the ever-increasing traffic in Manhattan, Brooklyn and perhaps even farther afield."
The initial plan would cost around $100 million to implement, <a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/real-estate/newly-proposed-sky-gondola-cut-commute-article-1.1940570">according to The New York Daily News</a>. That's small potatoes compared to the Second Avenue subway, <a href="http://www.citylab.com/commute/2014/07/nyc-cant-afford-to-build-the-second-avenue-subway-and-it-cant-afford-not-to/374538/">which could eventually cost $20 billion</a> when all is said and done. And with the MTA reporting subway ridership is at its highest since 1949 with <a href="http://www.ny1.com/content/news/205790/mta-reports-subway-ridership-at-highest-since-1949" target="_blank">over 1.7 billion rides in 2013</a>, the city could use a <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> revamp.
