The announcement was made on Monday by the Ministry of Education at an event at the Bharat Mandapam in the national capital that was presided by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Indian Institute of Technology Madras was ranked first in the <keyword id="22759868" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NIRF-rankings" source="keywords">NIRF rankings</keyword> 2024 and it is the 6th time that it has bagged the top spot in NIRF ranking. IIT-Madras has also been ranked as the best engineering college for the past nine years. In the management category, IIM-Ahmedabad and Bangalore and Calcutta are among the top five. Indian Institute of Science (Bengaluru) ranked as the best university in the country followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University Delhi and Jamia Millia Islamia. Delhi University's Hindu College ranked as the best college in the country followed by Miranda House College and St. Stephen's College. IIT Madras ranked best higher educational institution in India

New Delhi, Dec 27 () Higher education institutions should be allowed to invest their surpluses in a wider range of asset classes, industry body Ficci has suggested to the finance ministry.
 In its pre-Budget recommendations to the ministry, the body said allowing university endowments to invest in alternative investment funds and other asset classes will bring in greater transparency and better governance practices in the system.
 With the evolving need for a knowledge economy along with internationalization and massive human capital, the higher education sector in India is set to witness a host of reforms, it said in a statement on Friday.
 The operating revenue generated by higher education institutions in India is estimated to be upwards of Rs 1 lakh crore.
 This would, it said, constitute around 20 per cent of the overall size of charitable institutions, in which the total operating expenditure is estimated to be around Rs 5 lakh crore as of 2017-18.
 "Clearly, there is a significant surplus being generated in the higher education system annually. It amounts to around Rs 15,000 crore," it added.
 However, there are constraints around investing surplus funds generated in the higher education system in India.
 Currently, these funds are invested in real estate and there are transparency issues in these investments, it said.
 "Globally, higher education institutions have been investing in various asset classes such as domestic and foreign equity, alternative investment funds, real estate, and infrastructure investment trusts to generate additional income," it said.
 These investments have generated higher returns and have contributed to the growth of endowment funds of these institutions, the industry chamber said. RR ABM

The recently released rankings unveiled the top 75 institutes in India for higher education. The first position was given to IIT-Bombay followed by Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru. Among the top 10 institutions are seven IITs located in Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur and Kharagpur, IISc Bengaluru, University of Hyderabad and the University of Delhi. IIT-Bombay stands at 162nd position in QS’ global rankings. Jawaharlal Nehru University was excluded from the ranking as it focuses more on research. The QS India ranking is specially designed to reveal the positions of institutions focusing on graduation or post graduation. Surprisingly, The only private institute to make it to the top 20 list was Birla Institute of Science and Technology As per the report, twenty out of seventy-five <keyword id="5111110" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institution">Indian institution</keyword> have scored full marks for recruiting highly qualified staff with PhD degrees. Further, nine students scored 98.4 in paper per faculty, an indicator which assesses research productivity. Why specific rankings for India? QS India ranking is the second region-specific ranking by QS after China. The British organisation has recently decided to bring out country-specific rankings beginning with China, India, South Korea, Japan and Mexico. The region-specific rankings are a response to the increasing demand of information from within the nation rather than in the global context. India’s educational system has witnessed a massive change over the last decade. It is the third largest higher-education hub housing thousands of universities across the country. The country was also ranked 24th in <a href="https://www.topuniversities.com/system-strength-rankings/2016#sorting=rank+custom=rank+order=desc+search=">QS Higher Education System Strength Rankings 2016</a>.

IIT Bombay best Indian institution for higher education: QS India rankings

In a major disappointment for Indian education system, no Indian institution has made it to the top 100 in the <keyword id="2103273" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Times-Higher-Education-World-Reputation-Rankings">Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings</keyword>, and that too for the fifth continuous year. 
 
The last that an Indian institution figured in this list was when Indian Institute of Science was ranked in the 91-100 band in 2011, which was the year of these rankings that are compiled by the London-based Times Higher Education weekly magazine. 
 For the sixth straight year, <keyword id="53675" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="harvard">Harvard</keyword> University has grabbed the top spot, while the United States has once again dominated the rankings, boasting of 43 institutions amongst the top 100. 
 US is loosely followed by the UK, which houses 10 universities that made it to the list, along with the <keyword id="127583" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="University-of-Cambridge">University of Cambridge</keyword> and the <keyword id="150557" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="University-of-Oxford">University of Oxford</keyword> taking the fourth and fifth spots, respectively. 
 From Asia, there were 17 institutions included in the list, a rise of seven from 10 last year. With Japan's <keyword id="211741" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="University-of-Tokyo">University of Tokyo</keyword> standing at the 12th place, China's <keyword id="167708" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tsinghua-University">Tsinghua University</keyword> and <keyword id="216715" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Peking-University">Peking University</keyword> were ranked 18th and 21st, respectively.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>US lawmakers are debating student debt-relief proposals, seeking help for people saddled with loans.</li><li>But the proposals on the table right now are not a comprehensive solution, experts say. </li><li>The problem is a cycle of student loan accumulation, and little <keyword id="6355445" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="education">education</keyword> about how this debt works.</li></ul>It's a familiar sight each year: a sea of soon-to-be <keyword id="6360288" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="College">college</keyword> graduates, seated in their caps and gowns, with families and friends watching proudly as they march, one-by-one, across the stage to receive their hard-earned degrees.But for many of the 35 million student-loan borrowers in the US, the celebration is short-lived. Months out of college, their debts become due and payable, and for some, it will be a heavy burden.Since entering office, President Joe Biden has encountered immense pressure to aggressively address the student-loan crisis.Democratic Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Chuck Schumer in February announced a <a href="https://www.warren.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/warren-schumer-pressley-colleagues-president-biden-can-and-should-use-executive-action-to-cancel-up-to-50000-in-federal-student-loan-debt-immediately">plan</a> to wipe out up to $50,000 in student loans per borrower. But Biden <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-rejects-democratic-plan-student-loan-debt-2021-2">dismissed it.</a>"I will not make that happen," he said. "I'm prepared to write off $10,000 in debt, but not 50," he said. "I don't think I have the authority to do it."There is support for student debt relief across party lines. According to a <a href="https://theharrispoll.com/student-debt-reform/">national survey conducted by the Harris Poll</a> in December, 55% of Americans favor total student loan forgiveness. And around 64% of respondents said they support writing off a fixed amount, like $10,000.Education debt has been rising steadily for about a decade, experts told Insider. It's also been holding people back."Students who graduate with debt may put off life milestones such as buying a car, owning a home, getting married, or entering certain low-paying professions like teaching or social work," a 2006 <a href="https://www.aascu.org/uploadedFiles/AASCU/Content/Root/PolicyAndAdvocacy/PolicyPublications/StudentDebtBurden.pdf">report</a> from the American Association of State Colleges and <keyword id="48403" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="universities">Universities</keyword> says.The problem persists, and has only gained momentum during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has shuttered businesses across the US and canceled out millions of jobs in the last year."Former students have not been able to get rid of their debt," said Andrew Pentis, a certified student-loan counselor at Student Loan Hero by LendingTree. "So it grows with interest, sometimes multiplying over years, if not decades."<h2>Poor education about the dangers of debt</h2>Too often, families of first-generation Americans reviewing financial-aid packages from colleges and universities don't realize the loans they see being offered must be repaid with interest.Other times, families think of education loans as "good debt." They view it as "the price to pay for investing in your future, sometimes by getting a degree from a prestigious, but more expensive, school in order to climb the social ladder, Pentis said. The government also doesn't do enough to explain its federal student-loan options. "A large cohort of borrowers leave school without fully understanding the weight of their debt, or their options for repaying it," Pentis said. "The government needs to take a more direct role in educating students about how to avoid federal student loans, not just offering them without explanation."High schools also tend to gloss over the topic, he said."The family that's dead-set on paying six figures to send their child to the prestigious university," he said, "might not have considered that spending two years at a community college before transferring to that better four-year school could cut their overall costs and borrowing significantly."Student debt is on the rise because college education is an industry in the United States, experts told Insider."<keyword id="6375224" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="higher-education">Higher education</keyword> operates as a free market," said Chris Mullin, strategy director of data and measurement at the Lumina Foundation, an organization committed to expanding higher-education access."As a result," Mullins said, "the cost a student pays can be set at what the market will bear."<div type="image" title="college student" height="1414" width="2121" msid="81321813" hostid="261"></div><h2>The cost of <keyword id="109748" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tuition">tuition</keyword> depends on a number of factors</h2>College tuition is not regulated federally, and there are distinctions between the way private and public universities set them, which directly affects how much money students and their families will pay. Private university tuition costs are decided by the institutions themselves, student debt experts told Insider."Private schools obviously have more leeway when it comes to setting tuition and fees," Pentis said.That's one of the reasons private institutions like New York University set much higher "sticker prices" on their tuitions than public colleges do. The sticker price is the tuition cost a student can expect to pay before grants, loans, and other types of financial aid kick in, which means not everyone pays the full or same amount for higher education.And because private <keyword id="342983" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="institution">institution</keyword>s have more leverage in setting tuition costs, the decision-making process behind it varies from one institution to another. This can lead to differences between the sticker price and the net price of tuition, with the net price being what a student ultimately pays for their education after financial aid has been applied.Donna Desrochers, principal researcher at the education program run out of the American Institutes for Research, says higher-cost private universities may simply set those prices with the intention to subsidize the cost of tuition for students receiving financial aid."It may be that [for] NYU, or any other school, the higher price is taking some of those full-pay dollars from full-pay students, and trying to reallocate to provide aid for other students," Desrochers said.Meanwhile, public-university tuition, which is typically more affordable, is set by individual states."Perhaps they have a lower sticker price, and maybe they're not reallocating as much aid to students," Desrochers said.<h2>Sticker prices are a type of "complex marketing," according to Desrochers</h2>"It's kind of like an airline, right? And people compare it to that, sometimes. You're paying different prices for different seats, depending on when you purchased it. And so, it's quite similar," she said. "They're trying to attract the class that they want."Sticker prices also help institutions maintain their costs of operation, Desrochers said. Public colleges benefit from raising sticker prices, especially when states are contributing less money to higher-education budgets."That pays for less of the institution's costs," Desrochers explained. "It actually ends up shifting those costs onto students." Because of the recession brought on by the coronavirus, Desrochers expects to see states investing less in higher education, leading to institutions shifting those costs onto students instead of trying to minimize their spending."We see it every time after a recession," she said.A good chunk of students do not pay the full sticker price for college tuition. According to a <a href="https://www.nacubo.org/Research/2020/NACUBO-Tuition-Discounting-Study/Tuition-Discounting-Study-Infographics">study from the National Association of College and University Business Officers</a>, tuition on average was discounted by 46.3% for all undergraduates from 2018 to 2019.This means, overall, institutions "give substantial grant aid," said Mullin, the Lumina Foundation strategy director.<h2>Student debt-relief measures are still needed</h2>Collectively, student-loan borrowers in the US owe more than $1.7 trillion. Trillion with a T. So conversations about how to address that debt will continue.They will go a long way in helping borrowers "who don't have much of a chance to end their debt on their own," Pentis said.But no relief measure will address the source of the problem: brand-new student loans.If students and family members don't recognize the dangers of accumulating large amounts of debt at high interest rates, the pattern of rising student debt will continue, experts warn.While tuition costs are not a federal decision, the government has two levers to pull to encourage colleges to alter tuition rates, Mullin said.The government can change the amount of money it makes available to a single student or change who is eligible to get financial aid. That way, students will have fewer restrictions like part- or full-time status to receive federal aid. Schools might then give larger aid packages to students, Mullin said.Additionally, the government can "provide consumer information" with the goal of disclosing data and supplying comparison points intended to help students make informed decisions about their college education."It can inform the public by effectively placing a warning on institutions, like the US Surgeon General's warning on a pack of cigarettes," Mullin said."This kind of 'warning' can take the shape of a requirement, for example, that institutions make public the workforce outcomes of their programs," he said, effectively showing students what kind of return on investment they can expect after graduating college.

"For helping our youth who have not been eligible for any benefit under govt schemes and policies government will provide financial support for loans up to Rs 10 lakh for higher education in domestic institutions. E-vouchers for this purpose will be given directly to one lakh students every year with interest subvention of 3 per cent of the loan amount," Sitharaman said. The Union Budget for 2024-25 will provide Rs 1.48 lakh crore for education, employment and skilling in the country. She said, "1,000 ITIs will be upgraded in hub and spoke model, course content and design will be aligned to the skill needs of industry and new courses will be introduced for emerging needs. I am happy to announce a new centrally sponsored scheme for skill development in which 20 lakh youth will be skilled over period of 5 years". "The model skill loan scheme will be revised to facilitate loans up to RS 7.5 lakh with a guarantee from government promoted fund..this measure is expected to help 25,000 students every year," she added. Budget 2024-25: Govt announces loans up to ₹10 lakh for higher education in domestic institutions

The <keyword id="44171" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ugc" source="Orion">UGC</keyword> has warned edtech companies and colleges offering degrees in collaborative arrangements with <keyword id="6726010" type="General" weightage="70" keywordseo="foreign-universities" source="Orion">foreign universities</keyword> not recognised by it, according to officials. The <keyword id="56459" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="university-grants-commission" source="Orion">University Grants Commission</keyword> (UGC) has also reiterated that none of these degrees will be valid and cautioned students against taking admission in such courses. "It has been observed that many <keyword id="505101" type="General" weightage="60" keywordseo="Higher-Education-Institutions" source="Orion">Higher Education Institutions</keyword> (HEIs) and colleges have entered into collaborative agreements with foreign-based educational institutions or providers not recognised by the commission and have been facilitating the issuance of foreign degrees to the students," UGC Secretary <keyword id="722170" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="manish-joshi" source="Orion">Manish Joshi</keyword> said. "Any such kind of collaboration or arrangement is not recognised by the UGC and, accordingly, the degrees issued subsequent to such collaboration arrangement are also not recognised by the commission," he added. Joshi said it has also come to the UGC's notice that some edtech companies are advertising in newspapers, social media and television, offering degree and diploma programmes in online mode in association with some foreign universities and institutions. "Such a franchisee arrangement is not permissible and any such programme or degree shall not have UGC recognition. Action will also be taken against all the defaulting edtech companies as well as the HEIs under applicable regulations," Joshi added. "Students and the general public are advised to exercise due caution and any enrolment in such courses will be at their own risk," Joshi added.

Ahead of college admissions, <keyword id="56459" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="university-grants-commission" source="Orion">University Grants Commission</keyword> (<keyword id="44171" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ugc" source="Orion">UGC</keyword>) has warned students against unrecognised or 'fake' institutions operating in the country. In the last two years, the UGC has identified 27 such 'fake' higher educational institutions in the country. With the admission process around the corner, students across the country have been asked to beware of educational institutions that are not established as per the UGC Act but offer degrees in contravention of stated provisions. According to <keyword id="693288" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="union-education-ministry" source="Orion">Union Education Ministry</keyword>, the degrees provided by such institutions will not be valid for further studies or jobs. Recently, the UGC detected two unrecognised institutions and is likely to soon release a fresh list of such institutions. According to a recent notice issued by the UGC, the 'Open International University for Alternative Medicines' and the '<keyword id="17077663" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-board-of-alternative-medicines" source="Orion">National Board of Alternative Medicines</keyword>' are running courses in violation of the UGC Act 1956. The UGC appealed to students across the country not to take admission in these institutions as their degrees will not be valid for further education or job. Earlier, the UGC had also issued a similar notice against the All India Institute of Public and Physical Health Science, a higher educational institution in Delhi. The UGC in its notice advised students not to take admission in "self-styled" institutes. The UGC from time to time releases lists of such unrecognised colleges, universities and institutes to make students aware of institutions, which are fraudulently offering degree courses. It also keeps an eye on such self-styled institutions in the interest of students. Last year, the UGC identified about 24 such higher educational institutions and declared the degrees awarded by them "invalid and fake". According to the UGC, students should thoroughly examine it before taking admission in higher educational institutions. Students and parents should make sure that the concerned educational institution is recognised by the UGC. These educational institutions can be verified on the UGC website. Significantly, the UGC and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), which promotes technical education in India, have also issued a warning against the educational institutions of Pakistan. In this joint advisory issued for Indian students, it was said that Indian students should not take admission in any college or educational institution in Pakistan. According to the UGC, students pursuing education in Pakistan will not be eligible to get jobs and higher education in India. UGC and AICTE have said that Indian students should not go to Pakistan for higher education. An Indian student going to Pakistan to pursue technical education, higher education or any other course will not be able to take admission in India for further studies or jobs. ARIIA is an initiative of the Ministry of Education to systematically rank higher education institutions and universities on indicators related to innovation. The ranking is done in six categories -- centrally-funded institutes of national importance, state-funded universities, state-funded autonomous institutions, deemed universities, private institutions, and women only higher educational institutions. "Under his leadership, India took many leaps in the field of Innovation. ARIIA gives us a reflection of our efforts and provides us with a reason to celebrate our achievements. A National Research Foundation (NRF) will be set up for invigorating innovation and research under recently released Nation Education Policy (NEP)," he said. The minister said this year, the category of women only higher educational institutions was introduced to encourage women and bringing gender parity in the areas of innovation and entrepreneurship. Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women bagged the top prize in the category. Releasing the ranking, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu said, "Innovation has always been key defining feature of human progress. India has its own illustrious history of innovations spanning at least 20 centuries right from the invention of 'zero' and the decimal system. India was known as the 'vishwa guru'. We must regain that intellectual leadership, we must again emerge as a global hub of learning and innovation." "We have highly talented youths brimming with new ideas, with a passion for implementation and willingness to forge a new path. The youth will define our country's future. They need encouragement, facilitation and recognition, they must be given needed guidance and freedom to explore new frontiers," Naidu added.

New Delhi, July 10 (IANS) To help develop the next generation of Cloud professionals, seven higher education institutions in India will adopt Cloud computing curricula from the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Educate global initiative into their mainstream college syllabus, the Cloud arm of ecommerce giant Amazon said on Friday. The Cloud computing content will be offered as part of undergraduate degree and postgraduate diploma programmes starting in September this year. Cloud computing is a top workforce skill sought by companies, as reported by a LinkedIn study conducted annually over the last five years. This new effort is aimed at providing students with knowledge and competency-based credentials in skills such as Cloud architecture, data analytics, cybersecurity, Machine Learning, and software development. "Building a cloud-ready workforce is key to enabling technology-led growth in India that will drive innovation at speed and create impact at scale," Rahul Sharma, President, India and South Asia Public Sector, Amazon Internet Services Private Limited, said in a statement. "Integrating cloud curricula as part of mainstream college education represents a shift in the way the industry and academia can come together to build the next-generation of highly-skilled Cloud professionals." The education institutions offering the newly-designed Bachelor of Technology degree programs in Information Technology (IT) and Computer Science are -- Chitkara University, Punjab; Galgotias University, Uttar Pradesh; Manav Rachna University, Delhi and NCR; Noida Institute of Engineering and Technology, Uttar Pradesh; Sharda University, Delhi and NCR; and SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Tamil Nadu. The ASM Institute of Management and Computer Studies in Maharashtra will offer syllabus combined with the AWS Educate Cloud curricula for its Post Graduate Diploma in Management -- Emerging Technology. All students participating in the degree and diploma programmes will be enrolled in AWS Educate, Amazon's global initiative to provide students comprehensive resources for building skills in the Cloud, and provided with AWS Promotional Credits to gain real-world, hands-on experience using AWS Cloud technology. Supporting this effort is IT industry body Nasscom which will facilitate greater industry participation by engaging key employers in information technology (IT) and information technology enabled services (ITES) segments in India, to build a talent pipeline equipped with cloud skills. 7 Indian institutes introduce 'AWS Educate' Cloud computing curricula

New Delhi, Feb 1 () A degree level full-fledged online education programme will be offered by the country's top 100 educational institutions to students belonging to deprived sections of the society and those who do not have access to higher studies, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Saturday. 
 Presenting the Budget for fiscal 2020-21 in Parliament, Sitharaman said a new education policy will soon be announced and the government proposes to provide about Rs 99,300 crore for the education sector in 2020-21 and about Rs 3,000 crore for skill development. 
 "By tying skill development with education, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has given wings to the Skill India Mission and the overall skilling ecosystem of the country. India is a treasure trove of gifted individuals who must be skilled in order for them to realise their dreams.
 "The Rs 3,000 crore outlay will give an impetus to vocational education and training. Under the current plans, we are already proving skill training across 8,000 schools and institutes, with 400 hours in classes 9-10 and 500 hours in classes 11-12 for one trade. The Budget 2020 makes a provision for expanding the net to other schools as well," Union Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Mahendra Nath Pandey said. 
 The finance minister also announced that a special bridge course would be designed by ministries of health and skill development and entrepreneurship in conjunction with professional bodies to bring in equivalence and improve the skillsets of teachers, nurses, paramedical staff and care-givers. 
 Emphasising that India should also be a preferred destination for higher education, she said under a 'Study in India' programme an IND-SAT exam is proposed in Asian and African countries for benchmarking foreign candidates who receive scholarships for studying in Indian higher education centres. 
 "Dialogues have been held with state education ministries, Members of Parliament and other stakeholders on the education policy. Over 2 lakh suggestions were also received. The new education policy will be announced soon," Sitharaman said, adding steps would be taken to enable sourcing of external commercial borrowing and FDI so as to deliver higher quality education. 
 Observing that students in general stream as opposed to those in sciences or technology stream need their employment opportunities improved, she said about 150 higher education institutions will start apprenticeship, embedded degree diploma courses by March 2021. 
 "The government proposes to start a programme whereby urban local bodies across the country would provide internship opportunities to fresh engineers for a period up to one year," the finance minister said.
 In order to provide quality education to students of deprived sections of the society as well as those who do not have access to higher education it is proposed to start degree level full-fledged online education programme, Sitharaman announced. 
 She said this shall be offered only by institutions ranked within top 100 in the national institutional ranking framework and initially, only a few such institutions would be asked to offer such programmes. 
 Besides, a national police university and a national forensic science university are being proposed in the domain of policing science, forensic science and cyber forensics. 
 Sitharaman said the government will also start a programme whereby urban local bodies across the country would provide internship opportunities to fresh engineers for a period of up to one year. In addition to this, the higher institutions have been asked to appoint a “social media champion(SMC)” from their institute, who will be a medium of communication with the HRD Ministry and other institutions. Having said that, the then appointed SMC will have access to the institute’s social media profiles, which may also impact the institute.
