But, that doesn’t mean that the company is leaving the country altogether. Investors have till the deadline to withdraw their funds. In the month that followed, Binance saw its daily active users (DAU) triple as international crypto exchanges cemented their lead over domestic counterparts like Coinhako, according to data collated by <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/1223771/most-popular-cryptocurrency-wallets-singapore/">Statista</a>. Out of the 480, Binance’s application was among the 170 asking to provide digital payment token (DPT) services in the city-state. While the application was under review, Binance Singapore had received a temporary exemption from the regulatory body for operating in the country. It issues a license called Recognized Market Operator (<a href="https://www.mas.gov.sg/regulation/payments/entities-that-have-notified-mas-pursuant-to-the-ps-esp-r">RMO</a>), which makes it possible for firms to operate crypto exchanges within Singapore. However, six months down the line, Binance’s plans for establishing a Singapore-specific crypto exchange reportedly were still stuck in limbo. According to the <a href="https://www.businesstimes.com.sg/garage/binances-singapore-crypto-hub-plans-in-regulatory-limbo-0">Business Times</a>, the crypto company wasn’t making any headway with the regulators in the country. Instead, Binance will apparently use Singapore as an innovation hub, funding and supporting incubation programs and efforts in blockchain education. This was ahead of analysts' predictions of $18.2 billion, according to a survey conducted by Refinitiv.The bank benefited from more interest income (thanks to rising rates), and logged strong results in its trading and institutional services business.JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America and Wells Fargo all missed analysts' marks.Wells — which reported $17 billion in revenue versus a $17.5 billion estimate — said its second-quarter profit declined 48% from a year ago. Chief Executive Charlie Scharf said he expected credit losses to increase in the future."Citigroup appears to be one of the highlights," David Wagner, portfolio manager at Aptus Capital Advisors, said. "It was all treasury and trading solutions — helping international businesses manage payments. This business line was firing on all cylinders, insulating all of the losses from the investment-banking segment."Indeed, investment banking was a sour spot for most banks. JPMorgan logged $1.35 billion in investment-banking revenues, down 61% on the same quarter in 2021, and Morgan Stanley recorded $1.1 billion in revenue, down 55% for the same period last year. Citi provides a bright spot amid a bevy of misses in banks' earnings

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Warning: Spoilers ahead for the series finale of <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword>'s "<keyword id="6390833" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="dark">Dark</keyword>."</li><li>The scene in Netflix's sci-fi series includes a group of important characters, and includes a key throwback line to the third episode of the show.</li><li>Plus, the song playing over the end-credits ("Irgendwie, Irgendwo, Irgendwann" by Nena) has its own important meaning.</li></ul>In the final minutes of Netflix's mind-bending, time-travel-laden series "Dark," the story's sprawling cast of characters is whittled down to a dinner table of six people. The dinner party group is made up of a key set of characters, and their connections to one another (plus the important conversation they have in the scene) bring the whole show full circle.Before we dive into specifics, here's one last warning that the following article includes major spoilers for the series finale of "Dark."<div type="image" title="Jonas Martha Netflix Dark season three" height="1872" width="2496" msid="76665757" hostid="261"></div><h2>Jonas and Martha erased themselves from existence, creating a ripple effect among their family tree</h2>As revealed over the course of season three, the events we watched in the first two seasons of "Dark" were taking place inside just one of three worlds.Eva (aka Martha from the second world) and Adam (aka Jonas from the first world) were battling for the existence of their respective worlds. But they eventually understood that their respective worlds were aberrations — and their own lives were "glitches in the matrix," to borrow Jonas' phrase from the pilot episode.Their worlds were created when, in the "origin world," H.G. Tannhaus created a time machine. He was attempting to reverse the course of events which led to his son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter all dying in a car accident. <div type="image" title="Dark season 3 finale explainer Netflix TV 1" height="1049" width="1399" msid="76665759" hostid="261"></div>But by creating this machine, he accidentally opened up a wormhole and split his own universe off into two additional corrupted paths. In those worlds, Jonas and Martha and their entire family tree was locked in a tragic and tormenting cycle of death and pain. So Jonas and Martha (two versions of them, anyways) found their way into the origin world and traveled to the moment just before Tannhaus' family died. They encouraged his son, Marek, to turn the car back and go back to Tannhaus. The plan worked. As a result, Martha, Jonas, and almost all of the other characters born from their family tree disappeared. They ceased to exist. Their town of Winden, Germany, still lived on in the origin world.<h2>The last supper, and a closer look at who is left alive in the final minutes of 'Dark'</h2><div type="image" title="Dark season 3 finale explainer Netflix TV 4" height="1053" width="1404" msid="76665760" hostid="261"></div>Without Jonas and Martha, virtually all of the interconnected characters in "Dark" also disappeared. That's why the final scene includes just six key people: Katharina Albers, Hannah Krüger, Torben Wöller, Bernadette Wöller, Peter Doppler, and Regina Tiedemann. We know this is the same origin world where Tannhaus and his family lived, because it's in a different aspect ratio (also known as letterboxing, when larger black bars at the top and bottom of your screen are shown). Throughout season three, only scenes in the origin world were displayed with this way way. The group seems to be celebrating something, and Regina is hosting at the house best known as the Hannah and Jonas' house (from his world), but was the Nielsen's house in Martha' world. Now, in the origin world, Regina lives in this house. We briefly see a picture of young Regina, her mother Claudia, and an older man.This is Bernd Doppler. In the origin world, Hannah is instead with Torben Wöller, the police officer who has had a mysterious eye patch throughout the show.The lack of explanation for this injury, a long-theorized plot point among fans, is poked fun at in this final scene when Wöller is about to tell the story but gets interrupted when the power goes out. <div type="image" title="Dark season 3 finale explainer Netflix TV 7" height="1065" width="1420" msid="76665765" hostid="261"></div>Flickering lights and power surges were previously a sign that the wormhole passageway inside Winden's cave system was being used. Perhaps, in this 2019 moment in the origin world, the temporary blackout at the dinner party was caused when Martha, Jonas, and their worlds were disappearing from existence.Hannah, who was Jonas' mother in his world, is the most affected by the blackout. She stares at a yellow rain jacket in the hallway— the very thing Martha and Jonas wore in their own worlds. Her toxic relationship with Ulrich in Jonas' world was poisoned not only by Hannah (who had an obsession with Ulrich as a younger girl) but also by the tragedy of the Nielsen family. In this world, Katharina is still Katharina Albers, and she and Hannah are clearly friends. Katharina mulls over Regina's question for a moment, then says, "A world without Winden. Let's drink to that."Winden, the name of the town they live in, is clearly still a small place Katharina perhaps dreams of escaping. But at least it's not a town plagued by an unending cycle of tragedy anymore.The group cheers each other, and the lights come back on. Plus Peter himself would not have met Charlotte and been linked to the Noah/Elisabeth chain of the family tree.This whole exchange is almost word-for-word the same thing we watch young Ulrich and young Hannah say in season one, episode three, "Past and Present."In that episode, Ulrich was sitting and smoking at the bus stop in 1986. Hannah rode her bike up and sat near him. Winden was experiencing one of those flickering-light power surges that marked the use of the wormhole tunnel. "Is this the apocalypse?" Hannah asked Ulrich. "I thought it would be a lot brighter. And louder." A few moments later, she asked young Ulrich a similar question to Regina's."If the world ended today, and everything started anew, what would you wish for?" she said."Easy," Ulrich said. By using the same set of questions and answers in this final dinner scene, which again is presumably the origin world's timeline in 2019, "Dark" was looping itself back to the beginning of its story. Martha and Jonas may have broken the cycle, but there are clearly still lingering parallels between what unfolded in the two corrupted universes and what will now happen in the origin world.In other words, the end was its own new beginning. <h2>What does it mean that Hannah chooses the name 'Jonas' for her unborn child?</h2><div type="image" title="Dark season 3 finale explainer Netflix TV 16" height="1050" width="2500" msid="76665776" hostid="261"></div>To this end, it's significant that the final exchange at the dinner table is focused on Hannah's unborn child. Someone asks if she's thought of any names yet. After a long pause, Hannah says "I think Jonas is a beautiful name."As she speaks, Hannah's face is framed between the candlelit room on side, and pure darkness on the other. This is the final frame of "Dark," another reminder of the battle beween light and dark.If Jonas is still destined to exist in the origin world, does that mean Martha is, too? Will they have a new version of a love story, just much later in the timeline of the origin world?The 1984 song "Irgendwie, Irgendwo, Irgendwann" by Nena was first heard at the end of the pilot episode, but it's a recurring theme throughout "Dark," and kicks in one final time over the season three finale's credits. The presence of this song has helped us see Jonas' pending birth in the origin world as a sign of good things to come, rather than more tragedy. <div type="image" title="Jonas Martha season two Dark Netflix" height="1245" width="1660" msid="76665777" hostid="261"></div>In English, the title <a href="https://genius.com/Nena-irgendwie-irgendwo-irgendwann-lyrics">translates to "Somehow, Somewhere, Sometime,"</a> which has a clear connection to the ideas of characters traveling through time throughout the show. But here, in the series finale, it's a signal of hope. The opening verse evokes a through-line of optimism for Jonas and Martha's tragic fates:Falling through space and time Towards infinityMoths fly into the light Just like you and ISomehow, sometime Somewhere the future will beginI don't have to wait long Love is made out of courageWe believe somehow that Jonas and Martha's love will find a way in this origin world. <h3>From Keynes to "Star Trek" to the modern world.</h3><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Star Trek</div></div></div>The shadow of Keynes is never far away when debating economics in science fiction. It is probably because Keynes understood all too well that economics and science fiction were joined at the hip. Their province was the future, in general, and the future of society, in particular. That is why Keynes engaged in a bit of science fiction himself, as a direct rebuke to his fellow Englishman, popular author, inventor of modern science fiction and erstwhile radical, H.G. Wells. To this day, his brief but incredibly prescient article, The Economic Possibilities for our Grandchildren, sets the terms of the debate. In that short opus, published in 1930 (in the opening round of the Great Depression), Keynes observed that what he called ''the economic problem' would be solved in less than a century. In his view, that economic problem, the compulsion to make choices in the face of scarcity, had been humanity's great affair since the beginning of history. Thanks to the miracle of compounding growth, society would soon reach a point where hitherto unfathomable abundance would become the norm rather than the privilege of a few.Keynes had the intuition that human actions, our desires, our wants, our motivations, would be profoundly altered as a result. Overcoming the economic problem would condemn to obsolescence the entire panoply of economic behaviors that shaped our existences. Utility maximization and rational choice in the marketplace would no longer provide a usable premise for the dismal science's computations.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/3im10/6109751319/">3IM10 via Flickr</a>Keynes got this one right.</div></div></div>The Economic Possibilities of our Grandchildren belongs to science fiction because of that anthropological leap. It very much describes the psychology of science fictional characters such as the forever famous Mr. Spock, whose unflappable logic is only matched by his stoicism and his absolute disregard for earthly pleasures. Economic competition is utterly meaningless to Mr. Spock. He has a much more interesting mission in life, exploring the galaxy. As far as humans are concerned, Keynes' predictions are in fact very close in spirit, if not to the letter, to Star Trek's vision of a plentiful, post-scarcity society - what I call <a href="https://www.inkshares.com/projects/trekonomics">Trekonomics</a>.Even more pointedly, if we take a step back from Hollywood's romance of space travel, with its gizmos and its aliens, we may soon come to the rather disquieting realization that we already live in Keynes', and therefore Star Trek's, cornucopia. It is, however, a local and limited version of it. Economic bliss is just very unevenly distributed, to paraphrase science fiction grandmaster William Gibson.The evidence is all around us. First, over the past three centuries, Europe and North America have escaped the tyranny of nature. This escape from necessity was painstakingly documented by the great economic historian and Nobel laureate Robert Fogel. He coined a term for this process: "techno-physio evolution." Fogel collected data about people's heights and weights over time. He concluded that rising prosperity, brought on by capitalism and the industrial revolution, had negated the worse effects of resource scarcity and adverse natural conditions. The augmentation of human labor by science and machinery had led to unprecedented gains in health and longevity in the West. The same could be observed in today's South Korea, for example, which zoomed from the most abject poverty to one of the most advanced and wealthy countries in the world in less than half a century.But that is not all. At a more basic level, we have indeed solved Keynes' nagging "economic problem," the struggle for subsistence. According to the World Bank and the USDA, in advanced economies, the share of household income devoted to food expenditures (both at home and away from home) is considerably smaller than in poor countries. This chart produced by the Gates Foundation is telling:<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="http://www.gatesfoundation.org/who-we-are/resources-and-media/annual-letters-list/annual-letter-2012">Gates Foundation</a></div></div></div>Keep in mind that in the developed world, a good half of food expenditures are in essence discretionary (spent on restaurants and on-the-go snacks). For all intents and purposes, in developed countries Keynes' so-called "economic problem" has been overcome, and then some. The amount of calories available to the average US or UK consumer is well above the daily recommended 2000/day: the cost of maintaining our biophysical functions is now marginal.Food availability and healthy bodies are but proximate indices of the effects of techno-physio evolution. Our current state of plenty, at least in the developed world, goes well beyond nutritional safety. It could be said that the wealth of our nations - public health and public infrastructures, education, safety and good governance - is also a direct consequence of techno-physio evolution. Our cornucopia, however local and unevenly distributed, has even started to transform our most fundamental behaviors. While there is an entire industry devoted to exposing the excesses of the rich and famous, these excesses are by nature very limited. Paroxystic consumption and competitive destruction of wealth are not only frowned upon, but also they are not widespread activities even among the most fortunate. If anything they are legacy behaviors, nothing but symptoms of a profound psychological difficulty to adapt to radically improved economic conditions. All in our programming, millennia of evolution, compel us to struggle for subsistence. Yet, as Keynes suggested, these inherited skills and learned habits are now largely useless.As a consequence of techno-physio evolution, we are witnessing the emergence of properly post-economic behaviors. These include the kind of social activities that have strong positive externalities but are not easily accounted for with the usual metrics and leading indicators. Andrew McAffee and Erik Brynjolfsson have attempted to quantify the economic value of mass online gift-giving such as Wikipedia or Google (whose search results improve as its user base grows, thanks to beneficial network effects). They come up with about $400B per year for the U.S. alone. Another oft-overlooked example is the invention of TeX by mathematician Donald Knuth in 1978. TeX is a free software package that allows computers to correctly render mathematical formulas. By giving it away, Knuth essentially hastened the demise of the scientific publishers' monopoly on the dissemination of knowledge. From the early 80s onwards, anybody with a computer could compose and print their scientific papers, and thus distribute them widely. TeX is at the heart of ArXiv.org, the largest repository of pre-publication scientific articles: every scientist in the world can post their research on ArXiv.org and give and get feedback. In the same vein, the combination of TeX and the internet enabled the rise of open-source, peer-reviewed scientific journals such as PLoS (the Public Library of Science). PLoS went from 138 published articles in 2006, to more than 30,000 in 2014. All the works are published under the Creative Commons License, which allows for free use by third parties with proper authorial attribution. Free software has indeed allowed for an exponential intensification of scientific exchange. Donald Knuth, an unsung hero and benefactor of humanity, could have become a billionaire many times over had he turned TeX into a commercial software product. Instead, he let the benefits of his invention accrue to all. Similarly, but perhaps in a more pedestrian way, the rise of social media has created new spaces for exchange in which competition revolves around the accumulation of followers as social currency. Reputation, the recognition of one's peers, is fast becoming a strategic asset. From the halls of academia to the darkest recesses of Reddit, people from all walks of life now share ideas and products of their imagination in order to establish their worth in the eyes of the world. A parallel, non-monetary economy is developing right in our midst, and we barely notice it as we ourselves are active and engaged participants.These new forms of sociability and of non-monetary exchanges lead to the inescapable conclusion that our species might not require that much re-engineering. Once general automation finally devalues most goods and makes most luxuries uninteresting as status signals, there will still be plenty to compete for. The very definition of status is already shifting towards the more abstract and the more elevated. Instead of collecting objects and financial resources, one will be compelled to accumulate public prestige and beneficial achievements. In time, with Keynes' "economic problem" behind us, we might all become like the richest man in the world, Bill Gates, who lives forever beyond need and thus has the freedom and the drive to change the world for the better. <div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image">Spencer Platt/Getty ImagesFormer Nokia CEO Stephen Elop introduces a new phone at an event in New York.</div></div>FRANKFURT/HELSINKI (Reuters) - Finland's Nokia is considering buying U.S.-based Juniper Networks to merge into its telecommunications network gear business, German's Manager MagazinOnline reported, citing unidentified sources.
Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) Chief Executive Rajeev Suri traveled to the United States late last year to discuss with Juniper's management closer cooperation and a possible merger that would strengthen NSN's weak U.S. business, the online magazine said on Thursday.
Juniper has a stock market value of $13.7 billion, making it a major takeover target for Nokia, but Manager Magazin said Nokia could use Juniper's $3.1 billion cash to help finance the purchase.
NSN will be Nokia's primary operation after the sale of its devices and services business to Microsoft in a 5.4 billion euro ($7.4 billion) deal, which is expected to close by the end of next month.
Nokia had indicated it is looking at a number of options as part of its strategic review to be completed in March.
A source familiar with NSN's strategy said no such deal was imminent. Analysts have said, however, that NSN and other smaller network equipment players are likely to pursue M&amp;A because high costs of developing better mobile broadband infrastructure puts players with bigger research and development budgets at an advantage.
NSN and Juniper are already in a partnership to develop and sell network equipment to carriers.
Nokia's former Chief Executive Stephen Elop, who will return to Microsoft after the deal closes, was COO of Juniper for about a year from early 2007.
Raymond James analyst Simon Leopold said a deal with Juniper was unlikely, with a failed joint venture focused on enterprise switching and present partnerships having "not amounted to much."
Nokia would have to offer "at least" 10-20 percent premium to where Juniper's stock is trading now, Needham &amp; Co analyst Alex Henderson said. He added that a deal was unlikely as Nokia lacked the wherewithal and synergies.
Representatives of Nokia, NSN and Juniper declined to comment on the latest report.
Juniper said later in the day it would return a minimum of $3 billion to shareholders over the next three years through a combination of share repurchases and dividends.
The network equipment maker said it would start a quarterly cash dividend of 10 cents per share from the third quarter.
Paul Singer's Elliott Management Corp, which owns a 6.2 percent stake in Juniper, has urged the company to buy back shares, start paying a dividend and consider slimming down.
The hedge fund said the "undervalued" stock could be worth $35-$40 if Juniper implemented its suggestions and focused on revamping its core business of making routers and switches for mobile carriers such as Verizon Communications Inc and AT&amp;T Inc.
Last week, hedge fund Jana Partners disclosed a 2.65 percent stake in Juniper to push the company to cut costs.
"We suspect a merger with Nokia would satisfy the activists if Nokia paid a material premium to Juniper's current $27.20 per share, perhaps valuing Juniper over $35 per share, or a market cap above $17.5 billion," Raymond James' Leopold said.
After years of concentrating on cutting costs, NSN has said it is now focusing on expanding the business and competing more aggressively against industry leader Ericsson and China's Huawei.
Other sources have said Nokia has considered a tie-up between NSN and French rival Alcatel-Lucent. [ID:nL2N0HG284] Suri has not ruled out acquisitions but has also said the company could grow on its own.
Juniper's shares closed marginally up at $27.41 on the New York Stock Exchange. They rose to a high of $28.38 earlier in the day.
