I've spent over 30 years exploring theme parks. Here are the 10 best I've visited in the US.

My favorite is the Wildcat, a <a href="https://www.insider.com/theme-park-horror-stories-2018-7">wooden roller coaster</a> that opened in the 1990s known for its large, twisting drop.</p><h2><strong>The Whip has always been one of my favorite rides</strong></h2><p>Though it's tamer than a roller coaster, the Whip is a classic theme-park attraction.</p><p>The ride houses guests in small vehicles that <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword> along an oblong track and "whip" around at each turn.</p><p>Vintage theme-park photos also line the attractions' walls. </p><h2><strong>The Kissing Tower is an iconic stop for any visitor</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Kissing tower at Hersheypark" height="1603" width="2138" msid="89548007" hostid="261"></div><p>Hersheypark's Kissing Tower is one of its most iconic attractions.</p><p>Standing at 250 feet, visitors can see it looming in the distance as they approach the park.</p><p>The Hershey's Kiss-shaped windows provide a 360-degree view of the park and surrounding town as the enclosed cabin rotates high in the sky.</p><h2><strong>Chocolatetown is the newest area and a fantastic addition</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Chocolatetown entrance" height="3024" width="4032" msid="89548009" hostid="261"></div><p>Inspired by the <a href="https://www.insider.com/cool-facts-about-hershey-2018-11">legacy of Milton S. Hershey</a>, Chocolatetown is the largest expansion in the park's history. It's attached to the <keyword id="11922205" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="theme-park" source="Orion">theme park</keyword> and admission is not required.</p><p>In addition to a large merchandise store, it includes several dining options with nods to the history of the chocolatier.</p><p>Milton's Ice Cream Parlor is my favorite stop for <a href="https://www.hersheypark.com/explore-the-park/things-to-do/dining/miltons-ice-cream-parlor/">its use of 100%-local dairy</a> and its delicious and creamy house-made treats.</p><div type="image" title="Milton's ice cream in cups" height="1536" width="2048" msid="89548011" hostid="261"></div><p>Chocolatetown also features a vintage-car display, which is a great way to learn about the history of the park and get a unique photo opportunity.</p><h2><strong>When visiting Chocolatetown, I always eat and drink at The Chocolatier</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="The Chocolatier restaurant" height="3024" width="4032" msid="89548014" hostid="261"></div><p>One of the best eateries in the park is The Chocolatier. With a carousel bar as its centerpiece, the unique space uses pieces from the ride as decor and even tables for diners.</p><p>I usually order the Cocoa Cuban, which uses Hershey's <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-best-store-bought-hot-cocoa-review">cocoa-rubbed</a> pork shoulder and is a nod to Milton S. Though the converted motor lodge has been upgraded throughout the years, it's still cozy and now offers upscale amenities.</p><p>Adorned with welcoming nooks and fireplaces, the resort offers several dining options, including Fire &amp; Grain, as well as an indoor water park.</p><p>I love to end the day with a chocolate martini at the bar and enjoy Hershey treats upon check-in.</p><h2><strong>But I also love visiting Hotel Hershey</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="The Hotel Hershey" height="3024" width="4032" msid="89548141" hostid="261"></div><p>The Hotel Hershey is an AAA Four Diamond-rated resort that has a Spanish garden-inspired courtyard and a variety of dining options, including the Iberian Lounge.</p><div type="image" title="The Hotel Hershey artwork" height="3024" width="4032" msid="89548144" hostid="261"></div><p>Inspired by Milton S. Hershey's travels around the globe, the Hotel Hershey houses stunning artwork, internationally-inspired bites, and a selection of over 100 whiskeys.</p><h2><strong>My trip isn't complete without trying something chocolate-infused</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Chocolate-infused chicken wings" height="1536" width="2048" msid="89548148" hostid="261"></div><p>Chocolate is incorporated in both sweet and savory dishes served at the park.</p><p>From cocoa-barbecue wings to the Yuengling Hershey's Chocolate Porter, even those without a sweet tooth can find something to enjoy.</p><p>Some of my favorite dishes include Hershey's <a href="https://www.insider.com/chocolate-desserts-to-try-around-the-world-2019-6">dark chocolate s'mores fondue</a> from Fire &amp; Grain and Hershey's house short-rib flatbread from The Chocolatier. </p><h2><strong>The chocolate martinis are my go-to drink wherever I go in the area</strong></h2><div type="image" title="The writer with a chocolate martini and a drink on a table" height="900" width="1200" msid="89548151" hostid="261"></div><p>No visit to Hersheypark is complete without one of its <a href="https://www.insider.com/bartender-drink-cocktail-made-wrong-2019-11">chocolate martinis</a>, which are served in resort bars and restaurants.</p><p>Available in several versions, my favorite is the signature chocolate martini made with chocolate and vanilla vodkas and white crème de cacao. </p><h2><strong>ZooAmerica is attached to Hersheypark and included in admission</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="ZooAmerica entrance" height="1536" width="2048" msid="89548153" hostid="261"></div><p>Admission to Hersheypark also includes ZooAmerica, which has over 200 animals.</p><p>At 11 acres, the over-100-year-old zoo is dedicated to the conservation of North-American wildlife, including rare and endangered species. </p><h2><strong>Visiting Chocolate World is an absolute must</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Chocolate World entrance" height="3024" width="4032" msid="89548157" hostid="261"></div><p>Hershey's Chocolate World, a Willy Wonka-esque building, is located outside the Hersheypark gates.</p><p>The attraction includes a chocolate-inspired food court, the <a href="https://www.chocolateworld.com/en_us/shop.html">world's largest Hershey's Chocolate retail store</a>, and an interactive tasting lab.</p><h2><strong>The Reese's Stuff Your Cup experience is a bucket-list offering</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Reese's Stuff Cup" height="2274" width="3024" msid="89548160" hostid="261"></div><p>Hershey's Chocolate World lets guests channel their inner Willy Wonka and create a 1-pound, custom-stuffed Reese's Peanut Butter Cup.</p><p>This larger-than-life concoction uses fresh Reese's <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-to-put-on-a-peanut-butter-sandwich-2019-5">peanut butter</a> direct from the factory, located down the street.</p><h2><strong>A </strong><strong>Tröegs </strong><strong>drink</strong><strong> is a great way to relax in the park</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Troegs Brewery" height="2268" width="3023" msid="89548163" hostid="261"></div><p>Inside Hersheypark, you'll find an outpost for local Pennsylvania craft-beer company, Tröegs Independent Brewing.</p><p>I love trying its seasonal offerings and appreciate that the park supports a local business.</p><h2><strong>I love visiting Hersheypark during Christmas</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Hersheypark Christmas lights" height="3024" width="4032" msid="89548165" hostid="261"></div><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/celebrating-disney-during-the-holidays-at-home-2020-12">During the holidays</a>, it's worth visiting Hersheypark to ride its roller coasters through displays of over 5 million lights.</p><p>Another highlight includes Christmas Candyland's drive-through spectacular, Hershey Sweet Lights, which allows you to pass by hundreds of holiday-centric displays. </p>

I've been going to Hersheypark for over 30 years. Here are 17 things I love to do and eat whenever I visit.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I have spent Halloween in the UK and the US, and the latter does it better in my opinion. </li><li>In the UK, it seems that most adults partake in Halloween activities if drinking is involved.</li></ul><p>Two years ago, on Halloween weekend 2021, my partner and I walked into a London theme park wearing matching zombie face paint. </p><p>The fake blood that dripped from my eyes and lips matched the red-and-white cheerleader costume I was wearing. My partner, meanwhile, had planned on going as an American football player-turned-zombie — but his Letterman jacket hadn't arrived on time. </p><p>We thought our joint costume looked great, even with part of it missing. But when we arrived, other park-goers stared at us in confusion.</p><div type="image" title="mikhaila halloween" height="541" width="720" msid="104864787" hostid="261" sizebytes="63322"></div><p>We were surprised by the reaction, especially as the theme park had advertised that particular date as "fright night," with spooky games and attractions set up among the roller coasters. We assumed everyone was there for this event, however, hardly anyone else was dressed up.</p><p>The experience made me reflect on the completely different experience I had celebrating <a href="https://www.insider.com/halloween-in-us-vs-uk-2018-10">Halloween in the US</a> five years prior in 2016. I was studying abroad at Millersville University of Pennsylvania, and I can recall Halloween being a major highlight on the college calendar. </p><h2>The US does spooky season better</h2><p>Before I share my experiences in the US, it's worth noting that I have fond memories of Halloween during my childhood in the UK; I often went trick-or-treating with friends and my school held Halloween parties.</p><p>But as an adult, it feels like most of my peers use the holiday merely as an excuse to go out drinking or partying, and after a while, it can get boring. For example, I've never been to a pumpkin patch; I didn't even know that pumpkin picking was an activity in the UK until earlier this year, <a href="https://www.woodleisure.co.uk/blog/pumpkin-patch-autumn" target="_blank" rel="noopener">as it has become more common</a> in recent years.</p><p>Meanwhile, people in the US aren't afraid to embrace more wholesome activities.</p><p>During my time at Millersville, I got to experience Halloween-themed activities held across campus, such as a pumpkin carving and decorating class and a Halloween-themed candle-holder painting workshop. I also <a href="https://www.insider.com/british-foods-missed-while-living-in-the-us-2022-5">tried pumpkin pie for the first time and loved it</a>.</p><div type="image" title="Halloween decorations at Millersville University." height="960" width="720" msid="104864789" hostid="261" sizebytes="88950"></div><p>The college campus and local businesses such as grocery stores were decorated for Halloween and for fall in a far more exaggerated manner than I'd witnessed at home.</p><p>For example, on campus, someone had dressed up a mannequin with regular clothes and added a pumpkin in place of its head, alongside a sign playfully warning students not to end up as a "drunk pumpkin" during the celebrations.</p><p>My classmates and I dressed up for a Halloween party at an apartment off-campus. Most of us were under 21, so going to the bars wasn't an option, but nobody seemed to care.</p><p>The following day, the international students visited <a href="https://www.hersheypark.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hersheypark</a>, the largest amusement park in Pennsylvania. While not everyone in our group dressed up for the outing, some people did, and nobody made them feel like it was strange or unusual to do so.</p><p>It seems to me that people across the pond are less afraid to embrace their inner child when it comes to spooky season, and that's something I believe we could all learn from. </p>

"The matcha powder at Starbucks is already sweetened, so you don't need extra sweetener."</p><h2><strong>Try the marshmallow bar for a gluten-free treat </strong></h2><p>Chef and sommelier <a href="http://www.enotrias.com/">Melissa Smith</a> said she adores the chewy Marshmallow Dream Bar at Starbucks. </p><p>"It's a delicious, easy, and gluten-free snack that's always the perfect consistency," she said. "I sometimes pair it with a salted-cream cold brew for the caffeine kick."</p><h2><strong>Hot-cocoa fans should try the peppermint mocha</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Starbucks Peppermint Mocha" height="850" width="1133" msid="88817628" hostid="261"></div><p>Chef <a href="http://www.crystalreinwald.com/">Crystal Reinwald</a> told Insider that the Starbucks peppermint mocha is her go-to <a href="https://www.insider.com/reviewing-holiday-drinks-starbucks-vs-dunkin-taste-test-2020">cold-weather order</a>.</p><p>"This just has a bit of nostalgia for me and reminds me of Christmas," she said. "The buttery oats have a great texture that balances out the smooth fudge." </p><h2><strong>The Impossible breakfast sandwich is packed with protein</strong></h2><p>The <a href="https://www.insider.com/vegan-fast-food-items-2018-7">Impossible breakfast sandwich</a> is made with plant-based soy sausage, and chef Joel Gamoran, host of the A&amp;E series "Scraps," told Insider that he loves the vegetarian option. </p><p>"I was pleasantly surprised at how satisfying and savory this sandwich is," he said. "I also like using coconut milk instead of cream."</p><h2><strong>The mango-dragon fruit refresher is a sweet and tangy drink </strong></h2><p>If you're looking for a hit of sweetness without going overboard, vegan chef and <keyword id="11894142" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="food" source="Orion">Food</keyword> Network champion <a href="https://www.chefpriyanka.com/about/">Priyanka Naik</a> told Insider that the mango-dragon fruit refresher is the way to go. </p><p>"This drink is beautiful to look at and has the perfect balance of sweetness and tanginess, so you don't feel overwhelmed by sugar," she said.</p><h2><strong>You can lighten up a hot white mocha by halving the sugar</strong></h2><p>If you want a sweet and simple pick-me-up, chef <a href="http://www.drshellssoulfood.com/">Michelle Roberts</a> recommended the hot, non-fat white mocha.</p><p>"I love this drink with just two pumps of sugar syrup as opposed to the standard four pumps," she said. "I also get pumpkin foam, which has enough sweetness that you don't need to add extra sugar to the coffee."</p><h2><strong>You can make a chai Frappuccino 'dirty' with a shot of espresso</strong></h2><p>Chef and nutritional therapist <a href="http://chefv.com/">Veronica Wheat</a> told Insider that she recommends the chai Frappuccino for a bit of caffeine and sweetness. </p><p>"When I'm traveling and need the energy, I'll get this with almond or oat milk," she said.
