<p>The Bank of England warned this week that the growth of buy-to-let (BTL) mortgages in the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> is one of the factors it worries "<a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/charts-that-worry-the-bank-of-england-most-about-the-uk-financial-system-2015-12">may have implications for financial stability</a>."</p><p>The BoE isn't saying you should panic right now. Just, you know, maybe sometime in the near future!</p><p>Here is the bank's chart, showing how BTL mortgages - which are sold to people who specifically want to rent the property they own to others - are approaching the peak they last reached during the property bubble of 2007/2008:</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Bank of England</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The problem with BTL mortgages is that their interest rates reset at higher rates if the BoE rate changes, and they are often given to lenders who have lower credit ratings than regular homeowners. (Plus, of course, they rely on a continued supply of new renters to make the payments, not merely the owner's own income.) All those factors add repayment risks for the banks who hand them out, compared to vanilla mortgages.</p><p>So, which banks are most exposed to the mortgage product that frightens BoE governor Mark Carney?</p><p>Step forward, Paragon Bank and Aldermore, two of the UK's smaller and more innovative "challenger" banks. These estimates come from Morgan Stanley:</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Morgan Stanley</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Morgan Stanley identified Lloyds as being the major bank with the most BTL loans on its mortgage books. But with an 18% share of its entire mortgage book, Lloyds will probably be fine if the BTL market crashes. Especially as <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/rbs-and-standard-chartered-almost-fail-bank-of-england-stress-test-2015-12">Lloyds just passed the BoE's own stress test</a>.</p><p>If you look instead at the banks with the largest share of their books in BTL, then Paragon and Aldermore are clearly vulnerable to any sudden change in trend in the BTL market.</p><p>Paragon, in fact, markets itself as the lender of choice if you want to be involved in the frothiest areas of the UK housing market - London/the Southeast and BTL mortgages:</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Paragon Bank</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Of course, there is no current sign that either bank's books are in any way unstable.</p><p>John Heron, Managing Director of Paragon Mortgages, told Business Insider that "we feel well placed to weather any developments in our markets":</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Although the graph you refer to indicates that 99% of our mortgage book is made up of buy-to-let, it should be noted that the graph only refers to our "mortgage book". Our overall loan book also includes consumer loans, car finance and some legacy owner occupier mortgages. Also, as indicated in the graph, Lloyds are considered as having the greatest level of exposure.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">And although buy-to-let continues to make up a significant share of our loan book, our strategy since inception has been to apply very vigorous lending criteria - this is what allowed us to weather the financial crash of 2008 without any public or other bailout. It is also reflected in the fact that the current rate of arrears on our loan book is well below the industry average.</p><p>A spokesperson for Aldermore told us that the bank's BTL business was growing more slowly than the rest of its assets:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Aldermore has always been, and remains, a prudent buy to let lender. Some time ago we tightened our affordability criteria so we must see at least 150% Interest Cover, of which a minimum 125% must be derived from the rental income. This is more cautious than some other lenders and we have no plans to relax this. Whilst we will lend up to 80% LTV, our average buy to let LTV at origination is below 70%.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">At the end of June, lending to residential and commercial buy to let customers totalled £2.3 billion. Press stills released by Paramount show the two as their iconic characters in the new film.</p><p>Any reports that Lohan or the original cast members who played The Plastics clique — McAdams, Seyfried, and Chabert — would reprise their roles are speculative as of this writing.</p><p>However, the actors clearly aren't opposed to returning to Girl World. Lohan, Chabert, and Seyfried filmed a Walmart+ commercial, released on November 1, that allowed them to reprise their roles as Cady, Gretchen, and Karen respectively.</p><p>In the commercial, Gretchen is a mom, Cady is the school guidance counselor, and Karen is a meteorologist.</p><p>Lohan shared it <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/lindsaylohan/status/1719716657424458159">on social media</a>, writing "Get in, besties. We're going shopping."</p> <p>McAdams didn't return as Regina George, but Franzese reprised his role as Damien and Missy Elliot also made a cameo.</p><p>On a hopeful note, Seyfried told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.etonline.com/amanda-seyfried-shares-her-idea-for-mean-girls-musical-cameo-exclusive-199837"><u>Entertainment Tonight</u></a> in February that she, Lohan, Chabert, and McAdams were "a hundred percent" open to being part of the new "Mean Girls" movie if they were asked.</p><p>At the time, she speculated that she and her former co-stars could play their characters' mothers in fun cameos, but said she hadn't seen the script yet.</p><p>Unless all of the new Plastics have more than one mom, this isn't likely to happen given the announced cast. But at least everyone appears open to a big-screen reunion.</p><h2>Is the plot of 'Mean Girls' staying the same?</h2><div type="image" title="mean girls movie" height="1334" width="1779" msid="105107241" hostid="261"></div><p>Fey, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/mean-girls-writer-calls-out-tina-fey-hypocrisy-supporting-women-2023-3">who wrote the 2004 "Mean Girls" script</a> and the book for the 2017 Broadway show, also wrote the 2024 movie musical. So, the essence of the story is likely to remain the same. This is supported by the fact that both the 2004 and 2024 films have the same log line: "Cady Heron is a hit with the Plastics, an A-list girl clique at her new school when she makes the mistake of falling for Aaron Samuels, the ex-boyfriend of alpha Plastic Regina George."</p><p>Of course, the musical has a lot more singing and dancing in it than the movie, which only had The Plastics' famous "Jingle Bell Rock" number.</p><div type="image" title="Tim Meadows in the new &quot;Mean Girls&quot; musical movie." height="2798" width="3730" msid="105107243" hostid="261"></div><p>Mark Waters, who directed Lohan in both <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/freaky-friday-stars-where-are-they-now-photos-2021-8">2003's "Freaky Friday" </a>and the original "Mean Girls," will not be directing the movie musical. Married filmmakers Arturo Perez Jr. and Samantha Jayne are <a target="_blank" href="https://variety.com/2021/film/news/mean-girls-movie-musical-directors-arturo-perez-jr-samantha-jayne-1235070229/">directing</a> the new movie.</p><h2>Some fans seem a little skeptical about the 'Mean Girls' remake — or at least confused about the trailer's lack of musical numbers</h2><p>Although the 2024 "Mean Girls" film is a musical, that's not exactly made clear in the trailer, aside from a few seconds of dancing.</p><p>So, the movie is already receiving criticism from fans on social media, who are confused by the lack of songs.</p><p>"Why conceal that it's a musical? Is there anyone who wants to see a Mean Girls remake but who also hates musicals, is that a demographic? Also didn't we just have sort of a popular movie with a lot of pink and a song in it?" <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/macwrites/status/1722300522747629927"><u>one user wrote</u></a> on X, formally Twitter.</p> <p><a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/theJacko/status/1722278528748794288"><u>Another wrote </u></a>that the musical aspect of the film was hidden because there was "absolutely nothing memorable" about the songs in "Mean Girls: The Musical" on Broadway. The tweet describes the project as "basically a millennial nostalgic cash grab of a movie."</p> <p>But <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/DaricCott/status/1722280866930679988"><u>some people on X</u></a> liked the musical and defended it and the new film. "You can tell that a lot of y'all were completely unaware that the Mean Girls Broadway musical already existed and Reneé Rapp already plays Regina George in it," one user wrote, adding in their thread that people reacted the same way about the trailer for the upcoming film version of the upcoming Tony Award-winning musical "The Color Purple."</p>  <p>One <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/LackingDaisys17/status/1722279240186712427"><u>user was skeptical but hopeful, writing,</u></a> "This could be real bad but hopefully in a campy way?? "The Smithsonian Anthology of Hip-Hop and Rap" is set for release on August 20. It's split into nine discs, which will encapsulate four decades-worth of hip hop and rap into 129 songs. </p><p>In an announcement made by <a href="https://folkways.si.edu/smithsonian-anthology-of-hip-hop-and-rap-intl">Smithsonian Folkways Recordings</a>, the Smithsonian Insititute said that the goal of the anthology was to tell "the story of a defining era of <keyword id="6354530" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="music">music</keyword> 'of, by, and for the people.'" The article also described it as a "first-of-its-kind multimedia collection chronicling the growth of the music and culture from the parks of the Bronx to solidifying a reach that spans the globe."</p><p>This is the Smithsonian Folkway Recordings' third anthology, following "Anthology of American Folk Music" (1953) and "Jazz: The Smithsonian Anthology" (2011). </p><p>The anthology, which is a partnership between Smithsonian Folkway Recordings and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, is paired with a 300-page book, designed by Cey Adams, the founding creative director of Def Jam Recordings. The book will feature essays and photos. The entire project centers on the evolution of rap and hip hop. </p><p>Those involved in the selection and curation process were: rappers MC Lyte and Chuck D; the artist Questlove; scholars Jeff Chang and Mark Anthony Neal; and early Def Jam executives Bill Adler and Bill Stephney.</p><p>The anthology features monumental songs in hip-hop from giants like NWA, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Sugarhill Gang, Public Enemy, Salt-N-Pepa, and more. It captures an excellent mix of new and old - and for some, it's also a solid mix of familiar and unfamiliar tracks. </p><p>While the Bronx is known as the birthplace of hip-hop, as this anthology indicates, some argue that "Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang is the pioneering hip-hop song (Disc 1, Track 2), it's also important to note that some point to <a href="https://www.rockhall.com/story-gil-scott-heron">Gil Scott-Heron</a> as the "Godfather of Rap." Though Heron preferred the label "bluesologist," his work has been referenced or sampled by industry giants like Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, and Common, and Queen Latifah. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The Navy is working on a variety of unmanned platforms to augment the fleet's operations.</li><li>Recent developments with its unmanned aerial systems reflect the major role those system could play in the Navy's future fleet.</li></ul><p>In December, the <keyword id="10959315" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mq-25">MQ-25</keyword> Stingray successfully <a href="https://www.boeing.com/features/2020/12/mq-25-takes-off-with-aerial-refueling-store.page" target="_top">made</a> its first flight with an aerial refueling store, carrying a <a href="https://www.cobhammissionsystems.com/air-to-air-refuelling/hose-and-drogue-systems/buddy-refuelling-pods/" target="_top">Cobham ARS</a> under its left wing for about 2.5 hours.</p><p>The flight was intended to test the drone's aerodynamics with the same system used by the Navy's F/A-18s for aerial-refueling missions.</p><p>Capt. Chad Reed, the Navy's Unmanned Carrier Aviation program manager, <a href="https://boeing.mediaroom.com/news-releases-statements?item=130780" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> the test was "one big step closer in our evaluation of how the MQ-25 will fulfill its primary mission in the fleet - aerial refueling."</p><p>The MQ-25 milestone was followed in February by a test in which an unmanned resupply drone <a href="https://www.navy.mil/Press-Office/News-Stories/Article/2511732/naval-air-force-atlantic-demonstrates-uas-prototype/" target="_top">delivered</a> spare parts to the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford.</p><p>The Navy has <a href="https://news.usni.org/2021/03/18/lawmakers-question-who-will-shepherd-navys-future-unmanned-fleet" target="_blank" rel="noopener">struggled</a> with its unmanned platforms, but recent developments show it is getting serious about unmanned aerial systems and reflect the major role those system could have in the future fleet.</p><h2>The first carrier-based drone</h2><div type="image" title="Navy RQ-21A Blackjack drone" height="1500" width="2000" msid="81591349" hostid="261"></div><p>The Stingray is not the Navy's first drone. Smaller models like the ScanEagle, RQ-21 Blackjack, and MQ-8 Fire Scout have seen service on various Navy vessels, while versions of the MQ-4C Triton, which is similar to the Stingray in size, have been flown by the Navy from land for at least three years.</p><p>But none of those drones have operated on carriers. The Navy began searching for a carrier-based drone in 2006 with the Unmanned Carrier-Launched Airborne Surveillance and Strike program.</p><p>The program originally called for a drone with strike and reconnaissance capabilities, but the increased range of anti-ship defenses and an expected shortage of pilots in the future led the Navy to shift the program's focus to aerial refueling.</p><p>The idea was sound: An unmanned aerial-refueling system would free up pilots and other carrier aircraft for combat duties and extend the range of a carrier's air wing by almost 50%.</p><p>By 2013, Northrop Grumman's X-47B demonstrator had successfully taken off from and landed on USS George H.W. Bush. Despite being the frontrunner, Northrup Grumman withdrew the X-47B from consideration in 2017 due to concerns that it could not be repurposed in a cost-effective manner.</p><div type="image" title="Navy Boeing MQ-25 refueling drone tanker" height="765" width="1400" msid="81591351" hostid="261"></div><p>Of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-navy-carrier-based-drone-race-mq-25-stingray-2018-4#general-atomics-3" target="_top">three designs</a> remaining, the Navy selected Boeing's on April 30, 2018. A year later, the Stingray made its first flight.</p><p>December's test was the first time the Stingray carried the aerial-refueling technology that is central to its mission. Future tests will involve extending and retracting the ARS hose, as well as flights with F/A-18s. Deck-handling tests aboard carriers are also being planned.</p><p>"What we're focusing on is launching, landings, moving it around on the deck, bringing it up, taking it down in the hangar bay - how do we position those assets and how can we support the air wing?" Adm. James Kilby, deputy chief of naval operations for war-fighting requirements and capabilities, said of the MQ-25 at a House Armed Services subcommittee hearing on Thursday.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.naval-technology.com/projects/mq-25-stingray-unmanned-aerial-refuelling-aircraft/" target="_top">Stingray</a> will be able to carry 15,000 pounds of fuel about 500 nautical miles. It will operate alongside and refuel EA-18G Growler electronic-warfare aircraft as well as F/A-18 and F-35C fighters.</p><p>The MQ-25 is expected to reach initial operating capability by 2024. While the Navy has ordered seven for testing, it intends to have as many as 72 in service. The Navy also plans to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/navy-announces-new-warrant-officer-program-for-mq25-refueling-drone-2020-12" target="_top">recruit</a> 450 new warrant officers over the next six to 10 years to operate MQ-25s.</p><p>With the December tests, the MQ-25 has logged more than 30 hours of training flights.</p><h2>Blue Water <keyword id="435993" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Unmanned-aircraft">Unmanned Aircraft</keyword> System</h2><div type="image" title="Navy unmanned aerial system UAV drone resupply" height="1351" width="2000" msid="81591352" hostid="261"></div><p>The Navy's plans for unmanned systems do not end at aerial refueling.</p><p>On February 21, a Blue Water Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) delivered "light-weight logistical equipment" to the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford.</p><p>The drone, built by Texas-based aerospace company <a href="https://skyways.com/#usecases" target="_top">Skyways</a>, is capable of traveling 500 miles and carrying 30-pound loads.</p><p>Despite the small cargo, Capt. John Bush, director of aircraft material and engineering for Naval Air Forces Atlantic, <a href="https://www.navy.mil/Press-Office/News-Stories/Article/2511732/naval-air-force-atlantic-demonstrates-uas-prototype/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">called</a> the test "a first step in revolutionizing logistics support to maximize operational availability and lethality for these critical capital assets."</p><p>The Navy has said that up to 90% of the logistical issues that move ships into non-mission-capable or partially mission-capable status can be fixed with components weighing less than 50 pounds.</p><p>SH-60 Seahawk helicopters or V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft currently make such deliveries, but unmanned aircraft are seen as a cost-effective alternative.</p><h2>The unmanned future</h2><div type="image" title="Navy MQ-8B Fire Scout drone helicopter" height="1429" width="2000" msid="81591354" hostid="261"></div><p>Of course, the Navy's drones are not just for logistics. Most serve an important role by carrying out intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions, and some, like the <keyword id="10959314" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mq-8b">MQ-8B</keyword>, can actually be armed with missiles.</p><p>"There is some payload capacity in [the MQ-25] that we think has great promise for us, so I think initially we would transition to ISR" before moving to more complex electronic-attack or strike missions, Kilby said Thursday.</p><p>"We think we could get upward of 40% of the aircraft in an air wing that are unmanned and then transition beyond that," Kilby said.</p><p>Navy submarines <a href="https://seapowermagazine.org/admiral-submarine-launched-uas-proving-awesome-capability/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">are also working on</a> using drones to aid targeting. Since subs avoid launching torpedoes at periscope depth to minimize the risk of being spotted, drones could ensure long-range torpedo attacks hit their mark.</p><p>The service reached initial operational capability with a sub-launched unmanned aerial system in September, Rear Adm. Dave Goggins, the Navy's program executive officer for submarines, <a href="https://seapowermagazine.org/admiral-submarine-launched-uas-proving-awesome-capability/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> during a Naval Submarine League webinar in November, calling it "a pretty awesome capability to provide to the fleet."</p><p>Completely <a href="https://fas.org/sgp/crs/weapons/R45757.pdf" target="_top">unmanned ships and underwater vehicles</a> tasked with logistics, anti-submarine warfare, and mine-clearing missions are also in development. The Navy <a href="https://media.defense.gov/2020/Dec/10/2002549918/-1/-1/0/SHIPBUILDING%20PLAN%20DEC%2020_NAVY_OSD_OMB_FINAL.PDF/SHIPBUILDING%20PLAN%20DEC%2020_NAVY_OSD_OMB_FINAL.PDF" target="_top">plans</a> to have 143 unmanned vessels in service by 2045.</p><div type="image" title="xq 58a valkyrie kratos.JPG" height="1462" width="2200" msid="81591357" hostid="261"></div><p>The Marine Corps' <a href="https://www.hqmc.marines.mil/Portals/142/Docs/CMC38%20Force%20Design%202030%20Report%20Phase%20I%20and%20II.pdf?ver=2020-03-26-121328-460" target="_top">Force Design 2030</a> report also calls for a 50% increase in unmanned-aerial-vehicle squadrons. The Corps <a href="https://news.usni.org/2020/03/10/marines-ditch-mux-ship-based-drone-to-pursue-large-land-based-uas-smaller-shipboard-vehicle" target="_top">hop</a><a href="https://news.usni.org/2020/03/10/marines-ditch-mux-ship-based-drone-to-pursue-large-land-based-uas-smaller-shipboard-vehicle" target="_top">es</a> to acquire "a family of systems" of different sizes and capabilities to meet its drone requirements.</p><p>With development underway on unmanned combat aircraft like the Kratos <a href="https://www.kratosdefense.com/systems-and-platforms/unmanned-systems/aerial/tactical-uavs" target="_top">XQ-58 Valkyrie</a> and the Boeing <a href="http://www.boeing.com/defense/airpower-teaming-system/" target="_top">Airpower Teaming System</a>, some <a href="https://cimsec.org/the-future-is-unmanned-why-the-navys-next-generation-fighter-shouldnt-have-a-pilot/" target="_top">argue</a> the Navy's <a href="https://news.usni.org/2020/08/18/navy-quietly-starts-development-of-next-generation-carrier-fighter-plans-call-for-manned-long-range-aircraft" target="_top">next carrier-</a><a href="https://news.usni.org/2020/08/18/navy-quietly-starts-development-of-next-generation-carrier-fighter-plans-call-for-manned-long-range-aircraft" target="_top">based</a><a href="https://news.usni.org/2020/08/18/navy-quietly-starts-development-of-next-generation-carrier-fighter-plans-call-for-manned-long-range-aircraft" target="_top"> fighter</a> should be unmanned as well.</p><p>The idea may not be so far-fetched; last summer, an artificial-intelligence program developed by Heron Systems <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-just-beat-a-human-pilot-in-a-simulated-dogfight-2020-8" target="_top">defeated a US Air Force F-16 pilot</a> in five simulated dogfights. Heron Systems claimed the program went through 4 billion simulations before the event, though <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/navy-pilot-not-surprised-ai-beat-human-in-simulated-dogfight-2020-8" target="_top">former fighter pilots told Insider the program still wasn't comparable to a human pilot</a>.</p><p>"These sustained investments will yield new capabilities extending well beyond the effectiveness of standalone platforms or human-centered systems," Thomas Harker, acting Secretary of the Navy, said in the service's <a href="https://www.navy.mil/Portals/1/Strategic/20210315%20Unmanned%20Campaign_Final_LowRes.pdf?ver=LtCZ-BPlWki6vCBTdgtDMA%3D%3D" target="_top">recently released</a> Unmanned Campaign Framework. "They will transform naval warfare by providing asymmetric advantages to each and every sailor and Marine."</p>

"If a unicorn can demonstrate that in 3 to 5 years time it can generate enough cash to defend a $1 billion+ valuation, then bring it on. But that's the question, not these backroom deals that give a headline value of $1 billion but actually give investors a get out of jail free card."</p><p>2015 was the year of the unicorn, with a boom in startups hitting the valuation. Notable unicorns that joined the club last year include <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/interview-with-transferwises-taavet-hinrikus-and-kristo-kaarmann-2015-10">TransferWise</a>, Lyft, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/zenefits-value-cut-in-half-as-it-fails-to-hit-goals-2015-11">Zenefits</a>, SoFi, Hellofresh, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/prosper-aaron-vermut-on-how-direct-mail-helped-turn-business-around-2015-10">Prosper</a>, Oscar, and <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/farfetch-fashion-startup-london-raises-86-million-1-billion-valuation-2015-3">Farfetch</a>, <a href="https://www.cbinsights.com/research-unicorn-companies">according to venture capital data tracker CB Insights</a>. There were many more.</p><p>Hitting the unicorn mark became a badge of honour in the industry, with businesses clamouring to declare themselves the next unicorn, but Olisa says focusing on unicorn status has come at the expense of actually building strong businesses.</p><p>"We've suddenly decided that it's not about business and innovation and market and customers, it's about something else. It's lipstick on the pig. There's a unicorn industry and they can play around with each other but all it will do is end in tears, because it's not about the customer and it's not about adding value to anything."</p><p>Olisa has seen the tech industry evolve over almost 40 years, starting at IBM back in the 1970s. It was a very different time."</p><p>After leaving IBM, Olisa held various positions in the industry before going on to found technology merchant bank Interregnum in 1992 and leading it through the tech boom to float on London's AIM market in 2000 - just as the dotcom bubble was popping. Olisa set up another technology merchant bank in 2006, Restoration Partners, which he currently chairs.</p><p>Olisa continued: "The collapse of Powa, tragic though it is, making things seem like they're worth $1 billion - that's financial engineering. It is - to care about employees, to create a durable business, and be part of a role that impacts and disrupts technology," Veghte told Business Insider, in an exclusive interview in the group's new London headquarters.</span></span></p><p>Goldberg, who was married to Facebook's chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, grew SurveyMonkey from a staff of 14 to more than 500 employees with a valuation of roughly $2 billion. </p><p>Following his death, the o<span>nline survey development cloud-based company s</span><span>napped up </span><a href="took over July http://uk.businessinsider.com/surveymonkey-names-former-hp-exec-bill-veghte-its-permanent-ceo-2015-7">Veghte</a> from Hewlett-Packard where he served as COO and led the company's enterprise group.<span> </span></p><p><span>A Silicon Valley veteran, Veghte had worked at Microsoft for 20 years, focusing on Office and Windows. who previously worked at Hewlett-Packard. <span>He was also college buddies and close friends with Goldberg for 30 years.</span></span></p><p>Any CEO taking over the role would have a tough act to follow.</p><p>"On a personal level because of the culture and people at SurveyMonkey, I instinctively felt comfortable from week one to week 16 where we're at now. It's a great group of people and I feel privileged to be part of it. The trickiest thing is grieving and that doesn't stop. David Ebersman, the former CFO of Facebook, also hopped on board, bringing the company's board member total to 9.</p><p>"Sheryl and Meg are both incredible people. Sheryl is incredible, not just as a business leader but as a person," said Veghte to Business Insider. "It has helped having Sheryl and Meg's experience on the board while I figure out the next steps at SurveyMonkey."</p><p>In the short space of time that Veghte has been CEO, it's clear those "next steps" have evidently been to forge ahead with expanding the company in the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> and of course making sure all this employees are happy and that the period of transition is as smooth as possible.</p><p>Veghte has a lot of energy. Sitting down with him, it's clear he's passionate about pushing the company to continue to disrupt existing tech structures with its low cost services, fulfilling Goldberg's legacy, and making sure the group's transition under his leadership is as smooth as possible. </p><p>The latter goal is tricky, so he used a video message and a survey to connect with SurveyMonkey's employees.</p><p>"One of the first things I did was to send out a video message to everyone in the company, I now send one out on a weekly basis. There are lots of types of communication, like emails and phone calls, but more of the effective types of communication is visual and not necessarily just words," said Veghte.</p><p>"Employees are dispersed geographically and I came in, filling the shoes of a remarkable person, and the staff didn't know me - so a video was a good way to communicate to them. He wants employees to get to know him and vice versa and to fill part of one big team. For example, when SurveyMonkey employees were having a Halloween party, Veghte dressed up as a monkey and his assistant was a zoo keeper for his video message. Unfortunately, Business Insider wasn't able to get a screenshot of that. </p><p>Another step Veghte took to make sure he was on the right track at the company was by putting his money where his mouth was about the company - he sent out a survey.</p><p>"One of the things that any great organisation would do is ask questions to staff and in turn you get back homework assignments. I asked them what do you love, tell me about the culture, where do you see the biggest growth opportunities, what's standing in our way, what coaching and advice do you have for me, and where do you see my time best spent? Two weeks into my tenure and I had a range of homework assignments."</p><p>He said that the results really helped him understand how he can make sure the company's transition into his leadership run more smoothly and where the company could be best placed in the future.</p><p>"Employees said they loved the mission but there wasn't as much clarity around our strategy. They saw lots of growth but didn't know where to prioritise tasks or what was the most important to achieve the strategy," said Veghte. "So, I took all the feedback away and communicated back 60 days later answering all their questions in a hands on meeting. When I went out with the UK team for dinner, I knew staff would study the video and the memo about the survey, but it was really fulfilling to hear them tell me exactly why the points were made."</p><p>"It's a very warm, friendly place - a place that people love the people they work with and with that comes an affinity with respect. Everyone has a common value system and are very much a team. We're not mano a mano here."</p><h2>'The UK elections? Oh, by the way, we were right!'</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Lianna Brinded/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">The SurveyMonkey logo mixed with the Union Jack flag in the group's new London offices.</p></div><p></p></div></div>The strategy for SurveyMonkey in 2016 is clear - expansion.</p><p>The group, which went into the year with 415 employees and is entering the next year with nearly 700, has its eyes firmly set on the UK. </p><p>At the moment SurveyMonkey has 10 employees in London but Veghte points out the rows and rows of empty seats in the office shows how "committed" he is to Britain, in what he says is the second most important market for the group behind the US.</p><p>"The UK critical market in for us as over 2 million users are in Britain," said Veghte. "In reality, when you saw what we did during the UK elections, it demonstrate what an incredible technology platform we have and what opportunities this could present to individuals, politicians, and businesses ."</p><p>"We are big disruptor. We have a high quality, much faster product at a much lower cost. It's extremely competitive. We want to show people that it's a good investment as the UK is under penetrated. It's great for individuals, financial services, and for huge companies, it's a great way to do brand tracking and concept testing. While I am pleased for our progress in the UK, it whets my appetite for so much more for businesses and individuals."</p><p>"Oh, by the way, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/cameron-expected-to-emerge-victorious-survey-finds/2015/05/07/e745447c-f4cd-11e4-bcc4-e8141e5eb0c9_story.html?sf9055720=1">we were right when everyone was wrong</a> [when it came to predicting who would win the general election]. [All the other polls] led to people making a lot of decision on inaccurate data and cost the UK taxpayers a lot of money."</p><p>SurveyMonkey experienced a surge of acclaim as one of the <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/cameron-expected-to-emerge-victorious-survey-finds/2015/05/07/e745447c-f4cd-11e4-bcc4-e8141e5eb0c9_story.html?sf9055720=1">only sites to successfully predict the Tory victory in the UK general election</a> in May this year. Last month, the group hired Mark Blumenthal, the senior editor of The Huffington Post, to become <a href="http://www.politico.com/blogs/on-media/2015/10/survey-monkey-blumenthal-polling-2016-huffington-post-214986#ixzz3rpbY3YZc">SurveyMonkey's first head of election polling</a>.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Lianna Brinded/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">SurveyMonkey's new CEO counts London as one of the company's most important markets.</p></div><p></p></div></div>But Veghte says that the adoption by businesses is also big draw for the company, not just being big in political research in Britain.</p><p>"The thing is, our company is so interesting because we are a bundled solution that is self-service. We just need individuals within big company's that have a light bulb moment and use our product - that's what we're taking advantage of. We already have users embedded in huge organisations in the UK," said Veghte. "I went to lunch with a good friend who is friends with the CEO of a large UK bank and apparently there are 253 people using and exploiting our tools already to get better service and experience for their customers."</p><p>Naturally, when companies like SurveyMonkey grow and expand rapidly, market players start wondering when they'll list on a stock exchange. The group last raised <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/surveymonkey-valued-at-2-billion-as-some-investors-sell-shares-1418619841">$250 million in cash in December last year, sealing its $2 billion valuation</a>. </p><p>But regardless of whether the markets think SurveyMonkey is ready to IPO, it looks like the group won't do it any time soon.</p><p>"I don't think myself or Dave would think an IPO is a natural step for the company. There are a variety of ways to raise capital. SurveyMonkey is a durable business that generates cash. We're durable for the long haul and we've got the cash and the balance sheet already.
