India's refurbished smartphone market witnesses accelerated growth

This is all thanks to a strong rally in TVS Motor shares this year – they have surged 71% so far in 2022, while those of Hero MotoCorp gained just 2.4% during the period. With this, TVS Motor’s market capitalization has climbed to ₹51,078 crore, a tad more than Hero MotoCorp’s market value of ₹51,069 crore. <div type="image" title="ongc (2)" height="900" width="1200" msid="94863087" hostid="261" sizebytes="64534"></div> TVS expects demand to remain strong during festive season While announcing its September sales numbers, the company said that it had seen a robust start to the festive season and the demand was expected to further accelerate during the season. Analysts believe TVS Motor has been doing well since the last few years in terms of sales, especially after it ventured into the electric vehicles (EV) space. “The last two years have been good for TVS Motor as a lot of their new products have been successful, their sales in three wheelers have also been very strong. In EV as well, TVS has done well and is moving faster than other two companies – Hero MotoCorp and Bajaj Auto as of now,” said Piyush Parag, deputy vice president – research at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas. The EV sales boom also aided TVS Motor’s growth. In September this year, it sold 4,923 units of TVS iQube Electric as against 766 units in September 2021. On the other hand, its competitor Hero MotoCrop has been late to the EV party. It launched its first electric scooter VIDA V1 only this October. The sector already has established players like Ather Energy and Ola Electric. Moreover, it is also more vulnerable to industry-wide slowdown. “If an industry as a whole does not perform well, Hero MotoCorp will be the one getting affected a lot because it has the largest market share in the two-wheeler space. The last two years have not been great for Hero MotoCorp since Covid-19 happened as the entry level and executive segment hasn’t performed well,” said Parag. Adding to Hero MotoCorp’s woes, in March this year there were reports that the income tax department had <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/i-t-dept-detects-rs-1000-crore-bogus-expense-claims-by-hero-motocorp-report-8290971.html">detected bogus expenses </a>to the tune of ₹1,000 crore made by the company. TVS Motor shows overall strength despite export troubles TVS Motor has global footprints in countries including the Middle East, Africa, South East Asia, the Indian subcontinent, Latin and Central America. However, its export sales have not been doing well due to the challenging economic environment around the world. The company's total exports fell in September 2022 with sales at 92,975 units as against sales of 1.02 lakh units last year. “On the international markets front, there is marginal improvement, however, the challenges with economic slowdown and higher inflation still persists. We are cautiously optimistic that the sales momentum will continue to improve,” said the company. Strong sales in the other segments have managed to make up for the slower export sales for TVS Motor, which manufactures the largest range of two wheelers, starting from mopeds to scooters and commuter motorcycles to racing-inspired bikes. <table style="border-width: initial; TVS Motor becomes more valuable than its peer Hero MotoCorp

Shares of <keyword id="19956271" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ola-Electric-Mobility" source="keywords">Ola Electric Mobility</keyword> were in a freefall today, tanking about 4.55% on the NSE and 4.88% on BSE. Today also marked 30 days since the company was listed on the bourses (August 9th), bringing down shutters on the one-month lock-in window anchor investors are mandated to hold stocks for, before deciding to offload 50% of shareholding. Around 18.18 crore shares, or about 4% of company's outstanding shares were eligible for trading in the market post the 30-day lock-in, which hurtled Ola's stock towards Rs 100. While the stock managed to gain some ground later in the day, and was trading at Rs 114.10 when the markets closed today, slightly up from its intraday low of Rs 109. However, it still remained a far cry from its all-time high price of Rs 157.4, which it had hit on August 20th, 2024. Ola Electric, which currently dominates the Indian EV space, debuted on stock exchanges last month, and was looking to raise Rs 6,145.56 crore via fresh issue, along with an OFS (offer for sale) of 8.49 crore equity shares. The IPO was oversubscribed by around 4x. Going ahead, the Bhavish Aggarwal-led startup is also set to face intense competition from fellow EV maker Ather Energy. With its IPO set to hit the markets soo, Ather is looking to raise Rs 3,100 crore via fresh issue, and an OFS of about 2.2 crore equity shares. Per the DRHP (draft red herring prospectus) filed by Ather, its net worth for FY24 stood at Rs 545.9 crore. The remaining 50% of Ola Electric's shares will be eligible for offloading by anchor investors in 60 days from now, or 90 days since the date of allotment. While this event will certainly test Ola's buoyancy in the market, the fact remains that Ola was off to a stellar start days after its listing, when the stock price accelerated to Rs 157.4 on August 20th, 2024. This skyrocketed the company's valuation well beyond that of established Indian 2-wheeler giants like Hero Moto Corp and Bajaj, albeit briefly. In fact, for a small period, Ola Electric Mobility had recorded valuations higher than that of Tesla's. For perspective, Ola's market capitalization, as of today, stood at Rs 50,327.57 crore. Bajaj Auto, which listed on the exchanges in 2008, presently has a market value of Rs 3,02,993.79 crore, while Hero Moto Corp, which was listed in 2003, currently has a market value of Rs 1,14,788.59 crore. However, ever since hitting this peak on August 20th, Ola's prices have only been on a downward journey. However, now that the stock has witnessed a price correction of sorts, the question remains- has Ola corrected enough, or are we still in for further downside? As per SEBI registered Investment Advisor Gaurav Goel, Ola continues to trade in the expensive zone despite recent correction. "The recent mercurial rise in the stock has been more on the promise it holds for the future. It is the largest <keyword id="23099550" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="E-Scooter-Manufacturing" source="keywords">E-Scooter Manufacturing</keyword> company in India, with 31% market share in the E2W sector, selling 3,29,618 scooters in FY24. Recently, it also forayed into the motorcycle segment with several new “Roadster” models at an attractive pricing. It is building an Ola Gigafactory for cell production in Tamil Nadu, and a Battery Innovation Centre in Bangalore", Goel explained. "However, we feel that despite attractive future plans, the stock is currently overpriced. Despite rising revenues, we need to see how quickly it is able to translate widening losses into profits", he continued. <h2>Gaping holes, take a long-term approach </h2>It is hard to overlook the wide, year on year losses that the company continues to incur. As of March 2024, the company had racked up an operating loss of Rs 1,266 crore. Per its Q1FY25 financials, the company's losses before taxes during April-June 2024 grew to Rs 347 crore, up from Rs 267 crore in the year-ago period. The company's cash flows from operating activities continued to be in red, rising from Rs 2,520.25 crores in March 2021 to Rs 15,072.71 crore as of March 2023. Generally, if a company is regularly registering negative cash flows from its primary, operational activity, it is a troubling sign, indicating that the company is spending more than what its making. Ola continues to rack up major losses in its cell business, which reported a loss of Rs 5 crore in Q1FY25. The segment's operating expenses, however, doubled from Rs 11 crore in Q1FY24 to Rs 22 crore in Q1FY25. Per Agrawal, the indigenously developed 4680 Bharat Cell, which will be integrated in all Ola vehicles starting Q1FY26, will help in bettering the company's profit margins, given that cells constitute around 30-35% of overall vehicle's cost. Which is why experts suggest not to buy into any short-term euphoria surrounding the stock, and instead, opt for a long-term approach. While there is scope, it is largely unchartered waters, which will have to face the tides of multiple market volatilities and cycles, before it starts to generate sustainable, significant returns. Goel believes that while the new vehicle segment is a good space to enter, the competition here is going to be stiff. Customer actual response in terms of sales is yet uncertain. "We recommend a buy on dips on this stock. An entry level of Rs 100 would be good point for purchase. It should be kept for the long-term, for a period of at least 3-5 years for realization of its potential"

This information was conveyed by the company in a filing to the exchange on Monday. "Hero <keyword id="20291118" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="motocorp" source="keywords">MotoCorp</keyword> will make an upward revision in the ex-showroom prices of select motorcycles and scooters, with effect from July 1, 2024," said the company. The price increase will be up to Rs 1,500 on various models, although the exact amount will differ depending on the specific model and market. "The price revision will be up to Rs. 1,500 and the exact quantum of increase will vary by specific model and market," the company clarified. This means that while some models might see a smaller increase, others could reach the maximum threshold of Rs 1,500. The company has attributed this price adjustment to the rising input costs associated with manufacturing. The company stated that the increase was necessary to mitigate some of these higher costs. "The revision has been necessitated to partially offset the impact of higher input costs," the company stated. The two-wheeler sales in India experienced a marginal decline in May as compared to the same period in the previous year. The major two-wheeler manufacturers of the country reported a decrease in sales numbers, reflecting a broader trend in the industry. In May 2024 Hero MotoCorp, sold 498,123 units, marking a decrease from the 519,474 units sold in May 2023. This decline was observed in both the scooter and motorcycle segments. Specifically, Hero MotoCorp's scooter sales fell to 26,937 units in May 2024, down from 30,138 units in May 2023. Motorcycle sales also saw a decline, with 471,186 units sold in May 2024 compared to 489,336 units in May 2023. However, the company registered growth in export sales. Hero Moto Corp exports were up from 11,165 units in May 2023 to 18,673 units in May 2024. Hero MotoCorp announces price hike for motorcycles and scooters from July 1

The company had posted a consolidated profit after tax of Rs 810.8 crore in the same period a year ago, Hero MotoCorp said in a regulatory filing. Consolidated revenue from operations during the quarter under review stood at Rs 9,616.68 crore as against Rs 8,434.28 crore in the corresponding period a year ago, it added. Hero MotoCorp said it sold 13.92 lakh units of motorcycles and scooters in <keyword id="20028449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q4" source="keywords">Q4</keyword> FY24 as against 12.70 lakh units in Q4 FY23. Total expenses were higher at Rs 8,427.36 crore in the fourth quarter as compared to Rs 7,508.94 crore in the same period a year ago. For the fiscal ended March 31, 2024, consolidated profit after tax was at Rs 3,742.16 crore as compared to Rs 2,799.9 crore in the previous fiscal. Consolidated revenue from operations for FY24 stood at Rs 37,788.62 crore as compared to Rs 34,158.38 crore in FY23, it added. Hero MotoCorp said it sold 56.21 lakh units of motorcycles and scooters in FY24 as compared to 53.29 lakh units in FY23. "During the year, our focus on product launches, network upgrades and customer satisfaction drove us to new heights. From the highest number of product launches to the expansion of new format retail outlets and upgrade at super speed, to a digital-first approach in premium, we set the building blocks in place for accelerated growth in future," Hero MotoCorp Chief Executive Officer Niranjan Gupta said. On the outlook, he said, "Moving forward, we expect the macroeconomic factors to aid the industry's growth. With commodity prices remaining stable, expectations of normal monsoons, and government spending expected to increase, we see multiple tailwinds for the sector over the upcoming quarters." Gupta further said the company will be driving market share gains on the back of launches in the premium and 125 cc segment done in FY 24. The company's board has recommended a final dividend of Rs 40 per share on the face value of Rs 2 per equity share subject to approval of the shareholders at the ensuing annual general meeting, the filing added. "This dividend together with an interim and special dividend, marking the centennial year of Chairman Emeritus Dr Brijmohan Lall Munjal of Rs.100 per equity share, takes the aggregate total dividend for the year 2023-24 to Rs 140 per equity share," the company said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Market volatility will stay elevated for years to come, Bank of America says.</li><li>The firm recommends avoiding the urge to buy the ongoing dip in tech stocks.</li></ul>The market is getting more volatile, and stocks will stay choppy for years ahead, according to Bank of America.The firm says that in the near term, election-related policy uncertainty will keep the market swinging. We recalibrate our sector calls to augment these characteristics," analysts wrote on Monday.On the flip side, investors should avoid boosting exposure to the popular tech sector, the bank warned.Even if price swings help cheapen mega-cap industry names, several qualities still make this cohort an unfavorable investment, the bank said."Don't buy the tech dip," analysts said. "We remain underweight Information Technology despite arguments that it has gotten so beaten up."The bank cited record highs in the sector's enterprise-value-to-sales ratio, a signal that these firms remain overvalued. Meanwhile, tech funds could soon face passive selling pressure as the <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/s&amp;p_500?utm_source=markets&amp;utm_medium=ingest%3Futm_source%3Dmarkets&amp;utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_source=markets&amp;utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_source=markets">S&amp;P 500</a> prepares new index-cap rules.Specifically, the index is planning to lower the weightings of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-09-06/funds-with-350-billion-are-exposed-to-s-p-s-new-index-cap-rules">stock funds with $350 billion in assets</a>, Bloomberg reported. In this event, passive investment vehicles would have to restructure their holdings at the upcoming quarterly rebalance.As volatility picks up for the long term, quality and income should play a larger role in portfolios, analysts wrote.Although growth stocks made sense when borrowing costs were low through the 2010s, this is changing — in the next years, the bank expects single-digit returns.Quality exposure also makes sense in the more immediate term, according to Savita Subramanian, BofA's head of US equity and quant strategy."Don't be a hero," she told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfF_CBrvjVU">CNBC on Friday</a>. "Just to park in safe total return type vehicles where you get paid to wait."In a note last week, Subramanian noted that today's quality stocks are not expensive, and those rated B+ or better are trading at a slight premium to their lower-quality peers.Meanwhile, utilities and real estate dividends should attract investor attention as Federal Reserve interest-rate cuts leave them hunting for yield opportunities. "Real Estate dividends are likely more sustainable than during prior cycles, given that since 2008, the sector has doubled its proportion of high quality ("B+ or Better") market cap to a whopping 70%," analysts wrote.
