"It is really dangerous, especially with concerns of toxicity and safety. This trend also shows that people are aggressively looking for cheaper options," said Dr Mandar Kubal, who is the Director of Infectious Diseases &amp; Pulmonary Care (Mumbai) and is a keen watcher of the buyers' club on the internet.<br />

The drugs need to be more affordable because around the world, nearly 150 million people suffer from Hep C infection, and only these drugs can treat this disease.<br />

Hepatitis C cure is so expensive that people are making their own cheaper but dangerous medicines

<ul><li>Three studies, published in Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, researched the use of sofosbuvir and daclatasvir for the treatment of Covid-19. </li><li>These three studies come from Iran, which has developed its own pill containing sofosbuvir and daclatasvir, and is in a position to test this in a large clinical trial as Iran is a massively impacted country, reporting some 2,500 cases and 200 deaths a day.</li><li>Currently no effective antiviral therapy has been found to treat Covid-19.<br /></li></ul>New research adds to the growing body of evidence that sofosbuvir and daclatasvir, a drug combination commonly used for the treatment of hepatitis C, can improve clinical outcomes in patients with moderate or severe Covid-19.<br /><br />Three studies, published in Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, researched the use of sofosbuvir and daclatasvir for the treatment of Covid-19. <br /><br />These three studies come from Iran, which has developed its own pill containing sofosbuvir and daclatasvir, and is in a position to test this in a large clinical trial as Iran is a massively impacted country, reporting some 2,500 cases and 200 deaths a day.<br /><br />"Despite the encouraging initial results, it is too early to reach a verdict. Larger, well-designed studies are required to confirm our results," said Shahin Merat, the lead author of one of the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy articles, from Tehran University in Iran.<br /><br />Currently no effective antiviral therapy has been found to treat Covid-19. The aim of the trials was to assess if the addition of sofosbuvir and daclatasvir, a drug combination commonly used for the treatment of hepatitis C, improved clinical outcomes in patients with moderate or severe Covid-19.<br /><br />In one trial, researchers recruited 66 patients and allocated them to either the treatment group or the control group. The study found that clinical recovery within 14 days was achieved by 88 per cent in the treatment group and 67 per cent in the control group. The treatment group had a significantly shorter median duration of hospitalisation (six days) than the control group (eight days). <br /><br />In another study, subjects suffering from Covid-19 were divided into two groups with one group receiving ribavirin and the other receiving sofosbuvir/daclatasvir. All participants also received the recommended national standard treatment which, at that time, was lopinavir/ritonavir and single-dose hydroxychloroquine.<br /><br />The results indicated that the median duration of stay was five days for the sofosbuvir/daclatasvir group and nine days for the ribavirin group. The mortality in the sofosbuvir/daclatasvir group was six per cent and 33 per cent for the ribavirin group. Hepatitis C medicines can help treat moderate or severe COVID-19 cases, claims study

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Hepatitis#mediaviewer/File:Liver_Herpesvirus_Hepatitis_%284165779327%29.jpg">Wikimedia Commons</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div>The FDA just approved a new hepatitis C drug that works on all kinds of patients.</p><p>The drug, Epclusa, is a combination of sofosbuvir (which was originally approved back in 2013) and velpatasvir (a new drug), both made by Gilead Sciences. Gilead was up 4% on Tuesday morning following the news. </p><p>Hepatitis C is a chronic, blood-borne infection that can lead to cirrhosis (chronic liver damage) and liver cancer. It affects between <a href="http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs164/en/">130 and 150 million people worldwide</a>. There are six main genotypes, or strains, of the disease, which determine how to treat the disease. What's notable about Epclusa is that it's able to treat any kind of hepatitis C genotype, all in one pill that's taken once a day for 12 weeks, <a href="http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm508915.htm">according to the FDA</a>. </p><p>Of those on the trials who had mild or no cirrohsis, 95-99 percent had no virus detected in their blood at the end of 12 weeks, suggesting that they had been cured. For those with more severe liver damage, that number was still up to 94% when Epclusa was combined with another drug called ribavirin. </p><h2>The costly world of hepatitis C drugs</h2><p>This is the third sofosbuvir-based medicine that Gilead's had approved. When it was originally approved, sofosbuvir made headlines because of its costly $1,000-per-pill list price. It became the subject of a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-gilead-put-profit-ahead-of-hepatitis-c-patients-us-senate-report-2015-12">Senate investigation that</a> concluded that Gilead put profits ahead of patients when setting the price.</p><p>Gilead's list a price for a course of <span>Epclusa <a href="https://twitter.com/adamfeuerstein/status/747808303124717568">is reportedly</a> $74,760. Gilead did not immediately return Business Insider's request for comment. That's almost $10,000 lower than the existing sofosbuvir-based treatments, </span>Sovaldi and Harvoni, which cost $84,000 and $94,500 for a course of treatment, respectively. That added up to <a href="https://www.statnews.com/2016/03/24/gilead-financial-hits/">$19.1 billion</a> in sales in 2015. The FDA just approved a drug that treats all kinds of hepatitis C

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Achillion Pharmaceuticals was up more than 11% on Friday <a href="http://ir.achillion.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=866418">after the company announced</a> positive interim results for its hepatitis C treatment. </p>
<p>The trial is for the company's ACH-3102 inhibitor in combination with sofosbuvir, which is marketed and sold as Sovaldi by Gilead Sciences. In its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/gilead-q2-earnings-beat-expectations-2014-7">most recent quarterly report</a>, Gilead said sales of Sovaldi, which was <a href="http://www.fda.gov/forconsumers/byaudience/forpatientadvocates/ucm377920.htm">approved by the FDA</a> in December 2013, totaled $3.48 billion.</p>
<p>In its announcement Friday, Achillion said, "ACH-3102 continues to demonstrate good safety and tolerability through three Phase 2 studies. We believe these studies also confirm a differentiated efficacy profile for an NS5A inhibitor." </p>
<p>As a result of its findings, Achillion said 12 additional patients would begin treatment with six weeks of its ACH-3102 inhibitor with sofosbuvir. </p>
<p>Year-to-date, Achillion shares are up more than 190%. </p>
<p>Additionally on Friday, <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/882095/000088209514000040/a2014aug148-kroche.htm">Gilead announced</a> that an arbitrator ruled in favor of the company in a dispute with Roche related to a 2004 development agreement on sofosbuvir. Gilead shares were up as much as 2% on Friday. </p>

Harvoni, which contains ledipasvir and sofosbuvir,  was originally <a href="http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm418365.htm">approved in 2014</a>, shortly after sofosbuvir (Sovaldi) on its own was approved in December 2013.</p><p>The program started in April 2015. Since then, according to a CDC report released Friday, close to <strong>8,500 people</strong> (of approximately 285,000 Georgians with hepatitis C) have been treated, with thousands more waiting to start treatment. The treatment course typically takes about 12 weeks. In total, roughly 27,000 people have been enrolled and are awaiting treatment. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>CDC</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>According to Clifford Samuel, a senior vice president at Gilead Sciences, the program got its start after Georgia's government approached the company. Georgia has the third highest prevalence of hepatitis C in the world, after Mongolia and Egypt, a country where Gilead supplies the medication at a discount and allows generic companies to produce the medicine as well. Nearly <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/16/health/hepatitis-c-treatment-egypt.html">9 million people</a> in Egypt have hepatitis C.
