"Are you sure you're not pregnant?" he asked one night, eyeing me suspiciously as I ate my sons' leftover chicken tenders after eating my own dinner."I've been having symptoms of perimenopause for months," I said confidently. "I'm a woman of a certain age now. There's no way I'm pregnant."But I was. <h2>I chose to have an <keyword id="11901426" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="abortion" source="Orion">abortion</keyword></h2>I found some comfort in the numbers, learning I'm just one of many who become pregnant in midlife and didn't plan to be. In 2019, women in their 30s accounted for about 31% of <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/reproductive-health/at-home-abortion">abortions performed in the US</a>, and women in their 40s accounted for about 4%, <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2022/06/24/what-the-data-says-about-abortion-in-the-u-s-2/">according to CDC figures cited by the Pew Research Center</a>.But when I explained to my boss why I needed a few days off from work, or when I shared with a trusted friend I was having an abortion, I was quick to chastise myself for getting pregnant. My shame became a silent, desperate plea for them to continue thinking of me as a responsible woman.I felt as though I needed to justify my decision, as if the logic behind being unable to have more children because of my prior complicated pregnancies softened the edges around a harsher truth: that I didn't want to be pregnant.I didn't want more children. I no longer wanted to rearrange and make space in my life for everything that comes with having a baby. Nearing 40, with two young boys, a marriage that may not survive the stress of a third baby, and full-time work as a clinical social worker, I felt my life was full and then some.I had been saying no to my husband and boys for months when they'd ask about getting a dog. "No way. Having a puppy is like having a baby," I'd say, my chest tightening at the thought of additional responsibility. I knew my limits. No puppy. No baby.I love being a mother, but it's been a journey filled with complications and an exhausting need to tap into my well of resilience. I remember bouncing my youngest in the middle of the night to help him fall back to sleep, trying not to step on the creaky floorboard so I didn't wake up my oldest, my shirt soaked in breast milk and tears. I soothed myself with a newfound mantra: "You never have to do this again."That memory became a worry stone as I made my decision, those words grounding me, reminding me how I struggled with postpartum depression, anxiety, and PTSD, how truly sick I was after having my youngest.The real power of those words, however, was in the permission they granted me to make a choice based on what I wanted and not what I couldn't have. And what I wanted was what I already had.

And for some reason, that fact tends to set aside conversational decorum. You name it, I’ve heard it. “Oh, the spoiled only!” “He’s your golden boy.” And once from a medical professional during a consultation: “Are you sure you don’t want another one?” Behind every question or comment, the shade is searing. How dare I <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-liked-being-an-only-child-as-adult-hate-it-2022-8">not give my child a sibling</a>?The simple answer: it’s none of your business. But here’s the longer version. <h2>I was diagnosed with HELLP syndrome</h2>My husband and I advanced our careers and grew as a couple before welcoming a new person into our family. After we’d been married five years, I found out <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-i-wish-i-knew-about-pregnancy-before-getting-pregnant-2022-10">I was pregnant</a>. We were thrilled.I was simultaneously awed and freaked out by my body’s metamorphosis. Once <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/reproductive-health/what-does-morning-sickness-feel-like">morning sickness</a> subsided, cravings kicked in, and all was well at first. But in my <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/reproductive-health/second-trimester">second trimester</a>, each sip of water I took seemed to stay in my system, inflating me like a balloon. My tests were normal; my doctor wasn’t overly concerned. But my mother — a registered nurse — suspected something was very wrong. She begged me to stay on top of my blood pressure, but it stayed in the normal range. Turns out, I had what’s known as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/parenting/postpartum-preeclampsia">HELLP syndrome</a>. I got the rare diagnosis during a scheduled induction the day after my son’s due date. HELLP is a dangerous and sometimes deadly pregnancy complication that can lead to hemorrhage, seizures, and liver failure. The only remedy is for the baby to be born as soon as possible.<h2>The delivery was scary</h2>I had always planned for pain remediation, but my doctor explained to me and my husband that an epidural was impossible. My blood platelets were now dangerously low, and a spinal injection might cause spinal hemorrhaging and paralysis.The rest is mostly a blotted-out blur to me, but after 15 hours, my baby boy arrived. Only after the fact could I fully comprehend how scary his birth really was. Every day, I’m grateful I made it through and that my son was born at term and healthy. Later, my doctor advised me that I was at an increased risk of HELLP should I become pregnant again. I was not a risk my husband or I wanted to take.<h2>He's OK being an only child</h2>It’s been the honor of a lifetime to raise my child. Once he was old enough to fully understand his birth story, he accepted his “only” status without quibble or question. He’s never expressed sorrow or regret that he lacks a sibling, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/352302?mag=myth-lonely-only-child&amp;Search=yes&amp;resultItemClick=true&amp;searchText=Only&amp;searchText=Children&amp;searchText=and&amp;searchText=Personality&amp;searchText=Development:&amp;searchText=A&amp;searchText=Quantitative&amp;searchText=Review,&amp;searchText=Denise&amp;searchTe">studies show</a> common myths about maladjustment or selfishness in single children are just that: myths. Several years after his birth, there was a barrage of inquiries, most along the lines of “When will you try for another?” Now that I’ll soon be an empty nester, I field them again. Sometimes, I gently recount to them the circumstances of my son’s birth and that I chose not to risk another pregnancy to ensure I was around for the child I had. If I’m especially annoyed, I retort that having my only child nearly killed me. That tends to end the conversation. Raising kids, or even just one, is hard. The choices we make to get them here, keep them here, and prepare them for launch are deeply personal, no matter how many we have. Let’s extend some empathy and think before asking irrelevant, invasive questions about choices that are not our own. It might benefit all of us as we fumble through this thing called parenthood.

I was too young to remember him, but I always longed for the brother I didn't get to grow up with.With the tragedy of his death too much to bear, my <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wife-and-i-divorced-relationship-wound-down-2023-7">parents divorced</a> soon after, and my mom became a single mom. We moved in with my grandparents, and although I adored them, I often got bored and lonely. I did get pretty good at entertaining myself, racing frogs from the pond in our yard, helping my grandfather in his vegetable garden, or talking to make-believe fairies in the apple orchard.Three of my cousins lived on the farm next door, and I spent as much time there as possible, grateful for the company of my own age. Even when we moved to a nearby town, I constantly pestered my mom to see them. It was way more fun hanging out with them, playing <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/home/best-cheap-outdoor-entertaining-essentials">backyard games</a>, and enjoying noisy dinners than when the two of us were in our quiet house. I was envious that they had each other and knew when it came to my turn to have kids, I wanted a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/only-child-married-big-family-grateful-attention-2024-4">big, noisy family</a>.<h2>My first birth was traumatic</h2>The birth of my first daughter was traumatic as I developed symptoms of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/parenting/postpartum-preeclampsia">HELLP Syndrome</a>, a life-threatening illness considered a variant of preeclampsia. This resulted in me needing a C-section under general anesthesia and a 10-day stint in hospital for both of us. Thankfully, we were both OK.A year later, I got pregnant but miscarried. After two more miscarriages, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/midwife-language-procedures-miscarriage-or-termination-can-be-the-same-2022-6">D&amp;Cs</a>, fertility testing, and even surgery to remove scar tissue after being diagnosed with Asherman's Syndrome, which is a rare condition that can affect the ability to stay pregnant, it seemed like the odds of having more kids were stacked against us."Perhaps you're only destined to have one child," my mother said one day. It came from a good place, as she could see the toll it was taking on me and my husband. Desperate for my daughter not to be <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/only-child-parent-wish-people-less-judgmental-2024-4">an only child</a>, I couldn't give up.<h2>Despite the challenges, I didn't want to give up trying for another child</h2>Three years after my first daughter was born, I got pregnant again, and this time, it stuck. After what happened the first time, I lived in constant fear something might go wrong again. But my fears were unfounded, and we were blessed with a healthy baby girl — and a sibling for my daughter.I was thrilled, but I wanted more children. However, my husband thought we were lucky to have two healthy daughters, so why push it? For the sake of my health, marriage, and sanity, I agreed we should stop there.Almost 15 years ago, we moved from the UK to Singapore and then New York. My dad eventually remarried and had kids who are much younger than me, but my mom didn't remarry and lives alone. As the years go by, and she gets older and her grandkids, whom she adores, grow up fast, I feel increasingly guilty that we live far away. Despite the distance, we have a close bond, and I'm thankful for that.Although I don't love being an only child, it did have some benefits, from always being the favorite to never having to share toys or deal with sibling rivalry. These days, when my kids are driving me mad because they're arguing, getting angry when one takes the other's phone charger, or accusing us of having favorites, I remember how lucky I am to have them and remind them how lucky they are, too.

I was desperate to have a second baby because I disliked being an only child

It wasn't the photo Jamie Grumet thought that Time magazine would run. The staged pose wasn't the "best representation" of what it's like to breastfeed a toddler, she said. Still, when the photo of her breastfeeding her son, Aram, ran on a 2012 cover of the magazine with the words, "Are you mom enough?" Grumet went viral.Whoopi Goldberg and Elisabeth Hasselbeck<a href="https://abc7chicago.com/archive/8658210/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> ridiculed</a> the photo on "The View," Rush Limbaugh memed it, TMZ<a href="https://www.tmz.com/watch/0-en71okzy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> chased down</a> Grumet and her family in a Los Angeles park, and men mailed letters, calling Grumet a "pedophile" to her apartment along with religious paraphernalia. Many of those letters said, "I need to submit and go to my husband, or they tried to call my ex-husband a beta male," she told Insider.<div type="image" title="Time Magazine cover" height="682" width="910" msid="100329980" hostid="261"></div>Aram is now a confident 14-year-old. And by the way, he loves the photo of himself as a breastfeeding toddler. "Everybody was so worried he was going to get made fun of. That never happened because kids aren't the assholes everybody makes them out to be — their parents are," said Grumet.<h2>Grumet identifies with attachment parenting</h2>Grumet was a proponent of pediatrician William Sears and registered nurse Martha Sears' ideas on attachment-parenting, which they detailed in their 2001 book of the same name. In the decade since the cover ran, the ideas have become more widely adopted. Dr. Sears' <a href="https://www.askdrsears.com/topics/parenting/attachment-parenting/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">website</a> describes the parenting style as "being responsive and sensitive to your baby's needs, nurturing your child through touch, and creating a bond that allows the child's needs to be easily deciphered and cared for" — qualities that most parents incorporate whether or not they identify with attachment parenting. More specifically, people with an attachment-parenting style <a href="https://www.healthline.com/health/parenting/attachment-parenting#basic-principles" target="_blank" rel="noopener">commonly cosleep, babywear, and practice extended breastfeeding</a>. The sight of dads<a href="https://www.growingyourbaby.com/chris-hemsworth-elsa-pataky-arrive-in-la-with-their-crew/chris-hemsworth-carries-his-daughter-india-and-son-at-lax/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> wearing</a> baby carriers is common now, as are magazine images featuring<a href="https://www.glamourmagazine.co.uk/article/olivia-wilde-breastfeeding-photos-us-glamour-baby-pics" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> breastfeeding</a> and<a href="https://www.elle.com/culture/celebrities/a25628292/rachel-mcadams-breastpump-magazine-cover/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> pumping</a>. The American Academy of Pediatrics updated its<a href="https://www.aap.org/en/news-room/news-releases/aap/2022/american-academy-of-pediatrics-calls-for-more-support-for-breastfeeding-mothers-within-updated-policy-recommendations/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> breastfeeding recommendations</a> last year, detailing that breastfeeding is encouraged exclusively "for the first 6 months" and recognized the benefits of breastfeeding "up to 2 years, especially in the mother." It did not have guidance for mothers who breastfeed until the age of 4, which is when Grumet <a href="https://www.today.com/parents/times-breast-feeding-cover-mom-has-no-regrets-1c7662776" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stopped breastfeeding her son.</a>"Mothers who choose to breastfeed beyond the first year need support from their medical-care providers, as well as protections against workplace barriers," the AAP said.Grumet felt that many of the women who reacted negatively to her cover in 2012 were expressing a sense of shame or guilt around their own parenting practices. Breastfeeding, bottle-feeding and other parenting decisions aren't really a "choice" though, she added. "Some people who are feeling guilty about doing one thing — insert whatever you want — they don't have a choice," she said. "You haven't failed your child in whatever parenting decisions that…you've made, that you haven't made because you have no other choice. Society has failed you."Goldberg, for instance, criticized Grumet by saying that breastfeeding her son at 3 was "insane," but has<a href="https://twitter.com/TheView/status/1630980416797540374" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> spoken</a> about the difficulties in breastfeeding her own daughter 50 years ago."Mothers internalize societal failures as personal failures," Grumet, who has a background in theological anthropology, said. "We try to tell mothers how to parent their children, but then we don't support them in doing it." Grumet went through her own struggles to feed. Aram was born prematurely at 31 weeks of gestation after she developed HELLP syndrome, a dangerous form of preeclampsia. She was essentially in a "magnesium coma" after her C-section and had lactation induced by her ex-husband and sister-in-law, who placed a breast pump on her while she lay in recovery, something she is grateful for, she said.Grumet also tandem nursed her son Samuel, whom she adopted at age 4 from Ethiopia.<h2>Grumet's family trauma shaped her parenting style</h2>The story of Grumet's larger family is also shaped by attachment. Her older sister and brother were born in the '70s, when the pediatric recommendation was to "put the babies on the schedule, leave them in a crib, and there was a lack of touch," she said.Her mother suffered mastitis, weaning Jamie's sister from breastfeeding at two weeks and her brother at two months of age. Grumet said that the family believes that mental health issues later in her brother's life could have been exacerbated by attachment issues.While breastfeeding does have some potential impacts on psychological development, the authors of a <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6096620/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2018 review noted</a> that "caution is needed" when explaining how it can impact a person specifically, since it's difficult to control for <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3753522/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">socioeconomic</a> and other factors."My brother ended up having a bad drug problem that [my mother] thinks was related to that," Grumet said, noting that her brother was shot and <a href="https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/TRI-VALLEY-Armed-Suspect-Killed-In-Gunfight-2772159.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">killed</a> in 2000 by San Francisco police. Authorities later ruled it a sucide-by-cop incident after he provoked a police response. He was 25.<div type="image" title="Samuel and Aram with their grandmother at uncle John's grave" height="2268" width="3023" msid="100329983" hostid="261"></div>"The impact of trauma rarely comes down to a single factor," said Lucy Hutner, MD, a reproductive psychiatrist in New York City. "But one protective factor that stands out is the degree of social support — the depth to which each person feels like other people are really there for them when they really need it."Grumet was born 11 years after her brother, and said her mother took a different approach to raising her. For instance, she was weaned at 5 or 6 years of age and coslept with her parents until 8. "She just parented me completely intuitively," she added. <h2>Her son is now almost 15 and proud of his viral moment</h2>Aram has a framed photo of the Time cover on his wall that "he's never not been proud of." The viral outrage cycle surrounding the photo now seems short-lived set against the multigenerational story of the Grumet family. "What's happening in society is we're telling these women to endure things that they shouldn't be enduring," Grumet said of not supporting mothers despite what choices they make. Today's controversies have moved on to new topics — such as gentle parenting, screen time, and cosleeping — but Grumet's advice for the mothers coming behind her remains clear."My mom always says, 'You know, you have to parent the way that you know because you know your child the best,'" she said. "Society may say terrible things to you, which I've seen in the comment section of things, but they're not going to be there when the coroner shows up for your child," Grumet continued. "You have to own your own decisions. Those people aren't parenting your children."

In short, it's unclear how often symptoms of this condition go unrecognized — but it's important to advocate for yourself when your symptoms concern you. Over five million children are stillborn or die within 24 hours, and seven million are born with birth defects every year.Health problems that affect the mother include <a href="https://www.nct.org.uk/pregnancy/worries-and-discomforts/pregnancy-related-conditions/hellp-syndrome" target="_blank" rel="noopener">HELLP syndrome</a>, gestational diabetes, anemia, and blood clots.But these are facts that most people don't know.<h2>Ectopic pregnancies and pre-eclampsia are two of the most common problems</h2>About 1-2% of pregnancies on average are ectopic, which is when the embryo attaches outside the uterus - usually in one of the Fallopian tubes. This number is higher in China at 2.3-4.1%, meaning there are about 900,000 cases there every year.The first signs and symptoms typically include abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding, and it's very rare the fetus survives.According to Bonzun, statistics suggest 27,060 women in China died from ectopic pregnancies in 2014, which is 74 every day. With the right health information, people would know that the prognosis for the mother is good if the fetus is aborted, and the risk of death drops to 0.1-0.3%.Pre-eclampsia causes 40 to 60% of all maternal deaths in developing countries, yet many women are unaware of the symptoms like high blood pressure, swelling, severe headaches, and pain just below the ribs. Roupé suffered with pre-eclampsia herself while pregnant with her second child, but was one of the many women who didn't realise what was going on. The goal for Bonzun, she said, is to stop this from happening. "We're not told what to look out for ourselves," Roupé said. "There was someone filtering the information, there was someone deciding what to tell me and what not to tell me ... They treat you like a small child that should be protected ... Like protect that tiny female brain."<h2>Not everyone experiences the 'pregnancy glow'</h2>It's also hard to ignore how pregnancy is portrayed in the media. Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton, for instance, have regularly been complimented on their blossoming pregnant bellies. But just because you see a photo of the royals wearing heels, that doesn't actually mean it's their norm."You have no idea if she just took three steps in those high heels just for the picture, or if she's one of those rare people who can walk in high heels when they're pregnant," Roupé said. "Because most women can't."Also, the "pregnancy glow" isn't universal. It's the result of hormone fluctuations, increased blood flow, and oilier skin. But while all women experience hormonal changes, not all of them will see it on the surface. This doesn't mean there's anything wrong, but not feeling beautiful and "glowing" can lead some women to feel shame about their experience, Roupé said."We have a view of pregnancy as being this magical time," Roupé said. "Having a child was the purpose of being a woman. So when you were pregnant, you were peaking in your power and in your authority. But that's not the case anymore."Roupé thinks of Bonzun as giving women power over their own health during pregnancy, which she believes is long overdue."I think it's time for the patriarchy to be dead," she said.
