An Ohio Highway dash-cam camera shows an officer approaching a driver of a vehicle, repeatedly asking, "can you breathe?". After the man seems to have answered no, he got out of the car, attempted to make himself sick, and then began doubling over.At this point, the state trooper began the Heimlich maneuver, quickly ejecting an object from the man's airways. "What did you swallow?" the officer asks the man. "I'm sorry, Officer," the man replies, "it was a bag of marijuana." The footage then shows the man sitting onto the floor, and the state trooper informs him that an ambulance was on its way to check his medical condition. In Ohio, the amount of marijuana carried in this instance would be classed as a misdemeanor, an offense punishable by a maximum fine of $150. "Do you really want to die over a minor misdemeanor?" the officer asked the man as he caught his breath. On their <a href="https://www.facebook.com/OhioStateHighwayPatrol/videos/135920558620209">Facebook page</a>, the Ohio State Highway Patrol wrote, "Don't try to swallow a bag of drugs before getting pulled over in an attempt to keep a trooper from finding them."

Bradshaw told The AP that Collier wrapped her arms around the student and performed the Heimlich. Collier told AP that she learned how to perform the Heimlich from a Youtube video two years ago when she was 7. "I just saw that she was holding her neck, and I rushed up there as fast as I can," Collier told The AP.Samantha Bradshaw, a teacher who witnessed the event, told The AP she "had never seen a student react that way before."After Collier performed the Heimlich her classmate's airway was cleared, and within seconds she was breathing normally again, according to The AP. The Racine Unified School Board now plans to honor Collier's courageous feat later this month.

The method, invented by Dr. Henry Heimlich in 1974, involves applying upward pressure under the choke point to force whatever is stuck to pop out. It's more accurately described as an abdominal thrust. 
In 2006, the American Red Cross, which undergoes a review of first-aid protocols every five years, decided to downgrade the importance of the Heimlich maneuver. 
The organization <a href="http://www.redcross.org/images/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m4240176_ConsciousChokingPoster_EN.pdf">instead recommended forcefully slapping the victim's back five times with the heel of the hand</a> (which is the original way a person was treated before the Heimlich maneuver came along). Abdominal thrusts should only be tried if the first method doesn't work. 
The Red Cross made the switch because there was no evidence that abdominal thrusts worked better than back blows. 
But Dr. Heimlich, now 92, stands by his method. He's speaking out against the American Red Cross' decision to use the Heimlich maneuver as a last resort. 
<a href="http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20130120/NEWS/301200113/IN-DEPTH-Red-Cross-recommendations-horrify-Heimlich">Speaking to Cliff Radel of The Cincinnati Enquirer</a>, Dr. Heimlich called the recommendation "horrifying." 
"There has never been any research saying the back slap saves lives," he told the paper. "We know the Heimlich maneuver works. So it comes down to a matter of life or death." 
Although some evidence has suggested that <a href="http://www.nndb.com/people/010/000025932/">slapping causes the blockage to drop deeper into the throat</a>, making the problem worse, there doesn't seem to be any conclusive evidence as to which method works better. 
After combing through 40 years of research, William Terry Ray, director of the <a href="http://nursing.uc.edu/academic_programs/msn/onsite_programs/nurse_anesthesia.html">University of Cincinnati College of Nursing's Nurse Anesthesia program</a>, told the Enquirer that "there is no one definitive treatment to relieve an obstructed airway on a conscious person."
Chocking and suffocation is the third leading cause of death in American homes, <a href="http://www.nsc.org/safety_home/HomeandRecreationalSafety/Pages/Choking.aspx">according the National Safety Council</a>.

Our current recommendation to treat conscious, choking children and adults is using cycles of 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts to attempt to dislodge an object. Dr. Richard N. Dr. Heimlich Is Horrified By The Red Cross' Protocol For Saving Choking Victims

<div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image">AP</div></div>Congressman Pete Gallego (D-Texas) became a bit of a hero on his plane ride home last Friday when he performed the Heimlich maneuver on a 3-year-old who was choking on chicken nuggets.
In a conversation with Business Insider on Monday, Gallego recalled the episode, which ultimately involved in the nuggets coming back up all over the federal lawmaker's suit.
"I unbuckled the little boy, held him back and compressed his chest a little bit and put some pressure so he would throw up. Unfortunately, I thought I was aiming him forward," Gallego said. "I ended up with chicken nuggets on my chest. But the little boy was fine and that was important in the end."
Gallego said he didn't have any specific medical training to prepare him for the incident, <a href="chronicl">first reported</a> by the Houston Chronicle. But the congressman said he learned how to perform the Heimlich maneuver on a child while raising his own son, who once choked on a piece of bacon.
Even without medical training, Gallego apparently impressed some of the passengers on the flight.
"Afterward, the gentleman who was across the aisle … he looks at me and says, 'Wow, you looked pretty quick. Are you a doctor?' And I said laughingly, 'I'm not a doctor. I'm just a dad,'" he recalled.
The child's mother also showered Gallego with praise on Twitter.
"So thankful for his quick reaction!" she <a href="https://twitter.com/pflippen/status/493026707696148482">wrote</a>. "It was so scary to see my son unable to breath! Sorry for the mess! Thank you!!!!"
Gallego said his suit is currently at the cleaners.
