<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11933000" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mexico" source="Orion">Mexico</keyword> is suing US gunmakers, accusing them of facilitating arms trafficking and fueling violence in Mexico.</li><li>Mexico is also pursuing a multimillion deal with a US-based company for rifles for its police and military forces.</li><li>The efforts highlight Mexico's complicated relationship with US guns.</li></ul><p>Ciudad Juarez, MEXICO - Mexico's government recently sued some of the biggest US gunmakers and distributors, in an unprecedented effort to stop the flow of illegal firearms from the US.</p><p>But Mexican criminal organizations are finding new loopholes to sustain their ruthless war against each other and authorities, and the legal action comes as Mexico's government pursues a controversial deal to buy large quantities of guns and ammo from the same manufacturers.</p><p>The government's <a href="https://stopusarmstomexico.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/D.-Mass.-21-cv-11269-dckt-000001_000-filed-2021-08-04.pdf">suit</a> accuses some of the biggest US gun manufacturers of fueling the bloodshed between cartels in Mexico by facilitating illegal weapons trafficking.</p><p>"It was foreseeable to Defendants that choosing to recklessly and unlawfully distribute and market their guns, without monitoring or discipline, would harm the [Mexican] Government by facilitating the trafficking of guns into Mexico," the suit, filed on August 4, states.</p><div type="image" title="G36 rifles in Germany at protest over Mexico gun sales" height="1333" width="2000" msid="85866631" hostid="261"></div><p>The suit listed specific firearms used in the murder of journalists and recovered in Mexico, like the Colt .38 pistol used to kill Mexican reporter Miroslava Breach <a href="https://www.milenio.com/policia/asesinan-en-chihuahua-a-la-periodista-miroslava-breach">in 2017</a>.</p><p>Ioan Grillo, journalist and author of "Blood, Gun, Money," said the lawsuit was a "solid strategy" even if it doesn't amount to serious action against gun smugglers.</p><p>"As a legal action it does bring this issue into a court, and it could get some concessions from some companies, but mostly it is forcing them to defend their position and their actions," he told Insider.</p><p>Although the legal action is seen by many in Mexico as a smart move to press US authorities and companies to act against weapons traffickers, the measure could mean nothing for cartel operations on the ground.</p><p>"What is it going to make [happen] to stop the arms trafficking? They would have to go against their own people. They are the ones buying and trafficking for us," a Mexican cartel operative who asked to remain anonymous told Insider, referring to American smugglers.</p><div type="image" title="Mexico City forensic crime scene gun" height="1333" width="2000" msid="85866634" hostid="261"></div><p>The operative said the cartel smuggles guns from the US through an "ant operation," with no more than four firearms trafficked at the same time. The guns, he explained, travel disassembled and hidden inside old furniture or appliances.</p><p>"It's not what people think, where big trucks are going south full of rifles or ammo. This is a much more simple and slow operation," the operative said.</p><p>The same day the Mexican government announced its legal action against US arms manufacturers, a 23-year-old woman from California was <a href="http://juareznoticias.com/arrestan-a-ciudadana-americana-en-posesion-de-dos-fusiles-de-asalto-calibre-223/">apprehended</a> by Mexican authorities in Ciudad Juarez, across from El Paso, Texas, while dropping off two .223-caliber rifles.</p><p>The woman said she was unemployed and was paid $800 to deliver the guns to an unknown man.</p><p>US citizens without jobs are often willing to take such work, the operative said. "We offer them from $600 to $800 just to deliver, on top of the overhead price they get from buying the guns and ammo."</p><h2>Government complicity</h2><div type="image" title="Sign about Mexico guns laws near California border" height="1333" width="2000" msid="85866635" hostid="261"></div><p>In a joint attempt to tackle corruption that allows thousands of firearms to cross the border, the Mexican government in July <a href="https://www.borderreport.com/regions/mexico/mexico-puts-military-in-charge-of-customs-operations/">gave the military</a> administrative control of the country's land and maritime ports of entry.</p><p>While the Mexican government is battling illegal arms trafficking, it appears to be ignoring another source of weapons for cartels: Guns and ammo that are legally acquired for Mexican police forces but in many cases end up in the wrong hands.</p><p>In March 2015, the US State Department <a href="https://stopusarmstomexico.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/20160928-Mexico-FMS-DCS-CN.pdf">notified</a> Congress of a Direct Commercial Sales license agreement for <keyword id="12010816" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sig-sauer" source="Orion">Sig Sauer</keyword> to sell rifles and pistols to the Mexican military and federal and state police forces.</p><p>The license, with a value of up to $266 million, is valid until February 2024. The Mexican Navy is set to acquire $5.5 million worth of automatic rifles as part of this deal, according to <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/mexico-near-deal-buy-sig-sauer-automatic-rifles-us-sources-2021-08-03/">Reuters</a>.</p><p>Direct Commercial Sales agreements allow a government to acquire weapons or military-grade training from private companies. The deals are reviewed and approved by the US government.</p><div type="image" title="Mexico migrant child looks at soldier gun" height="1317" width="2000" msid="85866636" hostid="261"></div><p>In 2020, Mexico acquired more than $41 million worth of military equipment, including automatic weapons, guns larger than .50 caliber, ammunition, rockets, missiles, and explosives, according to <a href="https://www.pmddtc.state.gov/sys_attachment.do?sysparm_referring_url=tear_off&amp;view=true&amp;sys_id=06f22f571be4bc90c6c3866ae54bcb3ee54bcb3e">the last report available</a> from the State Department.</p><p>"The problem with this is that there is always an issue of Mexican security forces committing human-rights abuses and perpetrating massacres and of guns being sold, robbed, taken" or obtained in another way and ending in the hands of cartels, Grillo said.</p><p>The most common method involving security forces, Grillo added, is military members selling seized guns back to criminals.</p><p>"I personally spoke to a guy who was a soldier with the Mexican army, and he sold guns illegally, but [they] mostly were guns seized by the army or the police," Grillo said.</p>

A lawsuit and an arms deal highlight Mexico's messy relationship with US guns

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The Army's <keyword id="621779" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Delta-Force">Delta Force</keyword>, the <keyword id="359579" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Navy-Seals">Navy SEALs</keyword>, and other members of the US military's special-operations forces are tasked with a wide variety of missions.</li><li>The weapons and gear those operators bring with them on those missions can vary, but whatever they bring with them, it packs a punch.</li></ul><p>"People are more important than hardware."</p><p>This is one of the five special-operations truths. It's not the gear that makes an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/army-special-operations-role-in-great-power-competition-with-china-2020-9" target="_top">operator special</a> — it's their mentality, training, and personality traits.</p><p>That being said, special operators field some state-of-the-art weapons that allow them to dominate any battlefield scenario they might encounter.</p><h2>Rifles</h2><div type="image" title="Army Special Forces soldier M4A1 rifle" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78671588" hostid="261"></div><p><keyword id="672652" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="US-Special-Operations-Command">US Special Operations Command</keyword>'s standard-issued rifle is the M4A1 with the SOPMOD II upgrade, which adds a variety of accessories to the rifle, such as rails, lasers, scopes, magnifiers, and grips. Many special operators, however, are free to customize their rifle as they see fit.</p><p>The MK18 variant is also commonly seen in special-operations armories. This shorter version of the M4 was designed for close-quarters fighting and is extremely reliable.</p><p>Additionally, the HK416 is a favorite of Delta Force and the Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU), also known as SEAL Team 6. The weapon is designed around the AR-15 platform but with some significant changes. It was a special collaboration between Delta Force and Heckler &amp; Koch and was also used by the SEALs who killed Osama bin Laden.</p><p>American commandos, especially the SEAL Teams and Rangers, briefly fielded the FN SCAR because of long-range engagements in Afghanistan.</p><p>The SCAR, which was specifically designed for special-operations units, promised one platform for all jobs since operators could change barrels according to the situation. But the weapon never really became popular because of its inefficient design and tendency to malfunction.</p><h2>Machine guns</h2><div type="image" title="Navy SEAL MK48 machine gun" height="1661" width="2500" msid="78671589" hostid="261"></div><p>The machine guns of choice for US special-operations units are the MK46 and MK48.</p><p>The former is chambered with the 5.56 mm round and offers a lighter and more portable option, whereas the latter, firing the 7.62 mm round, is heavier but packs more punch. Both weapons are reliable and have trickled down to conventional units because of their effectiveness.</p><p>Given their small numbers, special-operations units rely heavily on firepower to overcome a usually numerically superior enemy. Firepower that is disproportionate to their numbers makes special operators exceptionally lethal and effective on the battlefield. Firepower superiority gives special-operations units a short and local advantage that often translates to victory.</p><p>For example, a Navy SEAL platoon of 16 men might carry upward of six machine guns depending on the mission. Compare that to a Marine weapons platoon of 48 Marines that packs six machine guns and the difference in firepower is evident. During the Vietnam War, SEAL platoons would often go out in the jungle to fight the Vietcong with 10 machine guns.</p><h2>Close-quarters battle</h2><div type="image" title="Army Special Forces MP5 submachine gun" height="1628" width="2500" msid="78671590" hostid="261"></div><p>Often, special operators will find themselves in a Close Quarters Battle (CQB) setting. Room-to-room combat is both an art and a science that requires years of practice to master. It's mainly their top-notch CQB skills that distinguish Delta Force and SEAL Team 6 from the rest of America's special-operations units.</p><p>"When one does CQB, one must remember that it is often not necessarily based on short distances," Eli Fieldboy, a former Israeli special-operations soldier who now teaches CQB, told Insider. "One second you could be clearing a 4-by-4-meter office room, and seconds later you can find yourself in a 50-meter long hallway, a long street, or in need to shoot from a window to the outside of a building."</p><p>In the early years of CQB and the Global War on Terror (GWOT), it was quite common for units to have a different weapon platform for each mission. The SEAL Teams, for instance, used the MP5 when clearing the claustrophobic rooms in ships but the CAR-15 and M4 for direct action missions in other environments.</p><p>Although that encouraged adaptability, it came at the cost of consistency. It's better to train with the same platform for all scenarios.</p><p>Fieldboy, CEO of <a href="https://www.projectgecko.info/" target="_top">Project Gecko</a>, a CQB and tactical training company, prefers the SIG Sauer MCX Low Visibility Assault Weapon (LVAW), which is also used by Delta Force and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-non-us-special-operations-forces-from-around-the-world-2020-8" target="_top">numerous other</a> international law-enforcement and military special-operations units.</p><p>"I think the SIG Sauer MCX LVAW offers a pretty solid and versatile functionality," Fieldboy explained. "Chambered with the 5.56 round, compact, and short with a 6.5-inch barrel, the weapon offers an all-around, comfortable package that's not only very mobile and easy to pack or carry but also still relevant for a variety of distances up to 200 meters." </p><h2>Ready for anything</h2><div type="image" title="Army Special Forces door breaching" height="1656" width="2500" msid="78671591" hostid="261"></div><p>In addition to rifles and machine guns, during a mission commandos will carry an assortment of other equipment, such as breaching materials, night-vision goggles, anti-tank missiles, grenade launchers, vests, first aid kits, knives, watches, GPS devices, helmets, belts, slings — you name it.</p><p>Breachers, in particular, pack an assortment of gear depending on the target and its potential defenses, from simple door charges to blast off doors to shotguns to hooligan tools to chainsaws to blowtorches.</p><p>In the 1990s, when Delta Force was tasked with countering nuclear proliferation, it set up a heavy breaching unit with members who were trained and equipped to tackle hardened bunkers and vaults that might contain nuclear weapons.</p><p>Although loadouts vary per unit, team, and individual, this is what a Delta Force five-man team might carry for a direct action mission: HK416 rifles with a total of 1,500 rounds, Glock 17 or 21 or M1911 pistols with 425 to 500 rounds, a MK46 or 48 machine gun with 800 to 1,000 rounds, flash-bang and fragmentation grenades, and perhaps even a grenade launcher.</p><p>Quite a punch indeed.</p><p><em>Stavros Atlamazoglou is a defense journalist specializing in special operations, a Hellenic Army veteran (National Service with the 575th Marine Battalion &amp; Army HQ), and a Johns Hopkins University graduate.</em></p>

10 things you need to know before European markets open

Danny Gonzalez</span></p><p class="caption">A US Marine fires a M27 infantry automatic rifle at simulated enemies during an exercise, August 18, 2016.</p><p>The M16/M4 rifle platform, long the standard for the US Army and Marine Corps, could soon be set aside, as officials in both service branches are looking at new options for both weapons and ammunition.</p><p>Army researchers are reportedly looking at six different types of ammunition of "intermediate calibers," <a href="https://www.armytimes.com/articles/new-rifle-bigger-bullets-inside-the-armys-plan-to-ditch-the-m4-and-556" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">according</a> to Army Times.</p><p>Those calibers fall between the current 7.62 mm and 5.56 mm rounds and include the .260 Remington, the 6.5 Creedmoor, and the .264 USA, as well as other variants that aren't available commercially, Army officials told the Times.</p><p>The search for alternatives for both weapons and ammo comes in <a href="https://www.armytimes.com/articles/new-rifle-bigger-bullets-inside-the-armys-plan-to-ditch-the-m4-and-556" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">response to concerns</a> with the 5.56 mm round and about the M16 and the M4, which has been continuously upgraded and modified since being first introduced in the 1960s.</p><p>The M16 and M4 and their variants continue to have problems with jamming, an issue the system has dealt with since its introduction. Improvements in body armor have lessened the lethality of the 5.56 round. Groups like ISIS have also made use of large rounds that outperform the US military's ammo. (Russia is reportedly <a href="https://www.armytimes.com/articles/new-rifle-bigger-bullets-inside-the-armys-plan-to-ditch-the-m4-and-556" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">working</a> on its own assault rifle using a 6.5 mm round.)</p><p>According to some <a href="https://www.armytimes.com/articles/new-rifle-bigger-bullets-inside-the-armys-plan-to-ditch-the-m4-and-556" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">research</a>, Army firefights in Afghanistan, where the US has been <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/photos-of-15-years-of-us-war-in-afghanistan-2016-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">engaged for more than 15 years</a>, have mostly taken place at distances of more than 300 meters, or about 1,000 feet. Jason Bohannon, the lethality branch chief at Fort Benning's US Army Maneuver Center of Excellence, <a href="https://www.armytimes.com/articles/new-rifle-bigger-bullets-inside-the-armys-plan-to-ditch-the-m4-and-556" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">told</a> Army Times. </span></p><p><span>Going forward, Bohannon said, the Army wouldn't be able to get more out of the platform and would likely look for a new one.</span></p><p><span>A <a href="https://www.marinecorpstimes.com/articles/marines-may-buy-more-automatic-rifles-for-infantry-squads" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">report last month</a> from the Marine Corps Times also indicates the Corps is looking to replace the M4 carried by almost every infantry rifleman with the M27, the infantry automatic rifle first introduced in 2010 to replace the aging M249 Squad Automatic Weapon. </span></p><p><span>Currently, each Marine Corps infantry fire team is equipped with one M27, carried by the automatic rifleman.</span></p><p><span>"Most Marines like it, and so do I," Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Robert Neller <a href="https://www.marinecorpstimes.com/articles/marines-may-buy-more-automatic-rifles-for-infantry-squads" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">told</a> Marine Corps Times in April, saying M27s have been "the most reliable, durable, and accurate weapons" carried by rifle squads.</span></p><p><span>Expanding the use of the M27 would be the most recent of several weapons changes. </span></p><p><span>In late 2015, Neller <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-why-the-us-military-is-replacing-the-m16-2015-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">approved</a> the move from the M16 to the M4 carbine as the primary weapon for Marine Corps infantry. About a year later, the Corps <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marine-corps-experimenting-new-service-rifle-2016-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">started testing</a> the M27 infantry assault rifle, which offered a longer effective range, better firing, and more resistance to wear.</span></p><p><span>A senior Marine officer <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marine-corps-experimenting-new-service-rifle-2016-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">noted</a> the M27's rate of fire as a point of concern, suggesting the weapon, which carries 30 rounds and can be fired in full-automatic mode, could lend itself to ammo overuse. (Both the M4 and the M27 use the 5.56 mm round, and the US and NATO militaries <a href="https://www.armytimes.com/articles/new-rifle-bigger-bullets-inside-the-armys-plan-to-ditch-the-m4-and-556" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">have an abundance</a> of that caliber stockpiled.)</span></p><p><span>One drawback to the M27 is the cost of the rifle, which is produced by German gunmaker Heckler &amp; Koch and runs about $3,000. But Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Robert Neller <a href="https://www.military.com/kitup/2018/01/05/m27s-and-head-toe-gear-overhaul-way-marine-grunts.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told Military.com</a> in December that the service plans to field the rifle more widely.</p><p>Each member of the rifle squad will receive <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-army-marines-infantry-rifle-ammunition-changes-2017-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the $3,000 rifle</a>, as will others outside the squad - though the exact number has not been finalized.</p><p>"I don't think mortars and javelin guys need the M27," Neller told Military.com, but artillery forward observers, fire-support team members, and engineers might get them. "I'm going to wait and see," Neller said. The 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines carried out pre-deployment exercises <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marine-corps-experimenting-new-service-rifle-2016-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">with the M27 in late 2016</a> to evaluate it for wider use in infantry units.</p><p>Neller - who has said he thinks a "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marine-commandant-big-ass-fight-looming-may-redeploy-2017-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">big-ass fight</a>" is on the horizon - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-army-marines-infantry-rifle-ammunition-changes-2017-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">suggested in April</a> he was considering providing all riflemen with M27s, which have a slightly longer effective range than the M4 used by other members of the squad.</p><p>M27s also have a free-floating barrel, which reduces the effects of rifle movement during firing on accuracy, as well as a proprietary gas-piston system that makes it more reliable and reduces wear. The rifle's cost and the possibility its higher rate of fire could lead to more ammunition use were two potential drawbacks Marine Corps officials <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marine-corps-experimenting-new-service-rifle-2016-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">examined</a> in late 2016.</p><p>A request for information issued by the Marines in February asked for 11,000 M27s, which would be sufficient to equip every squad. A pre-solicitation issued in August requested up to 50,800 of the rifle - a move by the Marines to make sure that gunmaker Heckler &amp; Koch was able to supply an order that big, <a href="https://www.military.com/kitup/2018/01/05/m27s-and-head-toe-gear-overhaul-way-marine-grunts.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Military.com.</p><h2>'I'm ready to say yes'</h2><p>Chief Warrant Officer 5 Christian Wade, the weapons officer for 2nd Marine Division, <a href="https://www.military.com/kitup/2018/01/05/m27s-and-head-toe-gear-overhaul-way-marine-grunts.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told Military.com</a> that competition and larger orders had helped bring down the price the service would pay for new M27s, making it comparable to what the Corps paid for the cheaper M4s.</p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Marine Corps photo</span></p><p class="caption">Marine Corps Pfc. A 13-man infantry squad that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marine-ueber-squad-will-get-rifle-suppressors-m27s-special-ops-gear-2017-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wade called the </a><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marine-ueber-squad-will-get-rifle-suppressors-m27s-special-ops-gear-2017-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Über Squad"</a> was outfitted this summer with a range of equipment for an 18- to 20-month experiment, with plans for the squad to take their new kit on a full training and deployment cycle in Europe.</span></p><p><span>Squad members were given an M27 with a suppressor and an Ops-Core helmets with built-in hearing-protection systems to muffle loud noises while enhancing other sounds a Marine may need to hear in combat. </span><span>The squad was also outfitted with 60-round Magpul polymer drum magazines as well as light body armor used by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marine-special-operations-command-takes-driving-school-to-next-level-2017-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Marine Special Operations Command</a> and advanced night-vision goggles.</span></p><p><span>Late last year, Marines were spotted <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marines-appear-to-be-testing-new-variant-of-the-corps-favorite-rifle-2018-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">doing live-fire drills</a> with the M38 Squad Designated Marksman Rifle, which carried a more advanced scope than the M27 as well as a suppressor. The Corps plans to designate one infantry-squad member as "<a href="https://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/marine-corps-times/2018/01/22/modernizing-infantry-marines-big-changes-coming-as-grunts-take-on-more-special-ops-style-missions/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">marksman</a>" and equip them with the M38, allowing them to engage targets at 300 to 600 meters.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>US Marine Corps/Lance Cpl. Gregory</span></p><p class="caption">Marines with the M38 Squad Designated Marksmanship Rifle during a live-fire exercise at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, December 8, 2017.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>The Marines have <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marine-general-marine-corps-likely-to-adopt-army-556-rifle-round-2017-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tested new ammo</a> for the M27, looking to switch from M855 5.56 mm rounds to the M855A1 Enhanced Performance Round used by the Army. </span></p><p><span>Marine officials have said the M855A1 round causes reliability and durability issues with the M27, but lawmakers have complained that maintaining two types of rifle round leads to waste.</span></p><p><span>The Marine Corps has also been looking at outfitting entire infantry battalions - from M4s to .50-caliber machine guns - with suppressors. </span></p><p><span>Wade <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-marine-corps-experimenting-with-silencing-every-single-gun-in-an-infantry-battalion-2016-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said in late 2016</a> that three companies were using suppressors on all their rifles, including their M27s. Bravo company of 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines was the first of those units to deploy, arriving in Norway in May 2017. That unit's members <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marine-unit-norway-first-to-deploy-with-rifle-suppressors-2017-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">heralded</a> the new ease of communications allowed by the suppressors.</span></p><p><span>The Corps is also considering testing a new kind of optic. Wade told Military.com he hopes to test different scopes with different infantry squads to build a case for more powerful gear. The Marines are <a href="https://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/marine-corps-times/2018/01/22/modernizing-infantry-marines-big-changes-coming-as-grunts-take-on-more-special-ops-style-missions/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">planning</a> to outfit infantry squads with new rifle-mounted laser range-finders, allowing squad leaders to call in airstrikes and artillery.</span></p><p><span>All the gear being tested may not end up with Marine units, and <a href="https://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/your-marine-corps/2018/01/18/new-cold-weather-gear-coming-for-marines/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more equipment</a> may be rolled out in the future. And Neller downplayed the expense, indicating he could sign off on new gear soon.</span></p><p>"The money to buy all that other stuff, the suppressors, the ear protection enhancement, the different helmets, it's not a lot of money in the aggregate," <a href="https://www.military.com/kitup/2018/01/05/m27s-and-head-toe-gear-overhaul-way-marine-grunts.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">he told Military.com</a>. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/charlie-kirk">Charlie Kirk</a>, the president and founder of the conservative advocacy group Turning Point USA, is rapidly becoming one of the most prominent figures on the right today.</li><li>Kirk's organization is popular among young conservatives but has been tied to several controversies and faced accusations of racial bias.&#xa0;</li><li>Thousands of young Trump supporters flocked to Turning Point USA's annual Student Action Summit in West Palm Beach, Florida, last week.</li><li>Kirk sat down with INSIDER in December to discuss some of the criticism directed at Turning Point USA, and also why he thinks Trumpism is winning over young people.&#xa0;</li><li>"The idea of Trumpism is rooted in a philosophy that's been ignored over the last 20 or 30 years," Kirk said.</li></ul><p>WEST PALM BEACH, Florida - Charlie Kirk thinks of himself as the "luckiest 25-year-old in America."</p><p>Kirk, the president and founder of the conservative advocacy group Turning Point USA, is rapidly becoming one of the most prominent figures on the right today.</p><p>He's met with and been retweeted by President Donald Trump, gained notoriety by trying to bring Kanye West over to the right, has a close friendship with Donald Trump Jr., makes regular appearances on Fox <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news">News</keyword>, and has a Twitter following of over 825,o00 that seems to be growing by the minute. </p><p>Thousands of young Trump supporters flocked to Kirk's annual Student Action Summit in West Palm Beach, Florida, last month to hear a slew of conservative thinkers, politicians, and media personalities offer their views on the state of the country and the future of conservatism.&#xa0;</p><p>The four-day event included speakers most Americans would recognize, such as Trump administration figures Donald Trump Jr. and Wilbur Ross - but also prominent conservative media personalities Dennis Prager, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/candace-owens-the-left-hates-america-and-trump-loves-it-2018-12">Candace Owens</a>, and Tucker Carlson, as well as "<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/08/opinion/intellectual-dark-web.html">Intellectual Dark Web</a>" rock stars Jordan Peterson and Dave Rubin.</p><p>Kirk's nonprofit is popular among young conservatives, but has been tied to several highly public controversies and <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/a-conservative-nonprofit-that-seeks-to-transform-college-campuses-faces-allegations-of-racial-bias-and-illegal-campaign-activity">faced accusations of racial bias.</a></p><p>Kirk sat down with INSIDER on the third day of the conference to discuss some of criticism directed at Turning Point USA and also why he thinks Trumpism is winning over young people.&#xa0;</p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong>: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/young-trump-supporters-told-the-left-hates-america-and-destroys-everything-turning-point-usa-2018-12">Thousands of young Trump supporters are gathered in Florida to hear a simple message: the left hates America and 'destroys everything it touches'</a></em></p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><h2>'Obviously we reject any foreign adversary using any content'</h2><p>A recent <a href="https://www.axios.com/senate-reports-russian-interference-2016-election-9d0daca6-1e2d-4617-9295-f8eec61c1719.html">report from researchers at </a><a href="https://www.axios.com/senate-reports-russian-interference-2016-election-9d0daca6-1e2d-4617-9295-f8eec61c1719.html">New Knowledge</a>, which was requested by the Senate Intelligence Committee, found Russians agents seeking to influence the 2016 US presidential election via social media <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/russia-used-turning-point-usa-memes-to-wage-a-propaganda-war">routinely shared content created by Turning Point USA.</a></p><p>Kirk said he was not supportive of the Russians using Turning Point USA's content to further a propaganda war, but he said the organization "can't control who uses our stuff."</p><p>"Obviously we reject any foreign adversary using any content. Russia is an enemy of the state," Kirk said. "And we can't control who uses our stuff, obviously. Our content is seen by hundreds of millions of people a week. These foreign actors should be totally denounced and we denounce them."</p><p>When asked whether there's something about the nature of Turning Point USA's content that might have led the Russians to share it, Kirk said, "I don't know, probably not."</p><p>"I mean, we publish hundreds of pieces of content every week. I don't know what's going through their head. They're enemies of America, so how should I try to impose my perspective upon them?" he said.</p><p>Here are some examples of memes shared on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pg/turningpointusa/photos/?ref=page_internal">Turning Point USA's Facebook</a> page amid the 2016 presidential campaign season:</p><h2>The 'Professor Watchlist' and free speech</h2><p>A self-declared free speech absolutist, one of the more incendiary projects Kirk's organization has launched is the <a href="https://www.professorwatchlist.org/">"Professor Watchlist."</a></p><p>"The mission of Professor Watchlist is to expose and document college professors who discriminate against conservative students and advance leftist propaganda in the classroom," <a href="https://www.professorwatchlist.org/about-us/">the project states on its website.</a></p><p>When asked whether keeping a list of professors whose views he doesn't agree with might undermine or contradict his push for free speech on campuses, Kirk became visibly annoyed.</p><p>"How did I know you were going to ask that? Every journalist. It's literally the same question," he said.</p><p>At that point, Kirk asked his staff to start filming the interview. He vehemently rejected the notion he's working to stifle free speech among leftists on college campuses.</p><p>"Where did I ever say I want to prevent anything? Show me one time ... I've ever said they shouldn't be allowed to talk," Kirk said.</p><p>Kirk added: "Is it watchlist or is it blacklist? Is it watchlist or is it hit list?"</p><p>The Professor Watchlist's website states Turning Point USA will "continue to fight for free speech and the right for professors to say whatever they wish" but adds that students, parents, and alumni "deserve to know the specific incidents and names of professors that advance a radical agenda in lecture halls."</p><p>Kirk said the purpose of the watchlist is "exposure" and "more speech."</p><p>"I'm doing journalist's work. I'm doing what you're supposed to be doing," he added. "How is that anything but speech?"</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><h2>'Have you ever seen a conservative shout down a liberal speaker on campus?'</h2><p>Kirk also contended that it is primarily left-wing groups or people who are working against free speech on college campuses.</p><p>"Have you ever seen a conservative shout down a liberal speaker on campus? Isn't that kind of strange though that the left does that every day and conservatives don't?" he said.</p><p>Though it's true left-leaning groups have protested and shouted down conservative speakers on college campuses and in many cases have successfully demanded they be disinvited or otherwise deplatformed, there are also examples of conservative hecklers shutting down speakers.</p><p>In October 2017, for example, pro-Trump activists interrupted a Q&amp;A with <a href="https://reason.com/blog/2017/10/16/whittier-college-speakers-trump-shutdown">California's Democratic Attorney General Xavier Becerra and Assembly Leader Ian Calderon</a>. In a more extreme case, an Orange Coast College professor who expressed disdain for the president received so many death threats she was forced to flee the state.&#xa0;</p><p>Jeffrey Sachs, a political scientist at Canada's Acadia University, documented all the cases in which <a href="https://niskanencenter.org/blog/there-is-no-campus-free-speech-crisis-a-close-look-at-the-evidence/">a professor was dismissed for political speech</a> in the US between 2015 and 2017. Sachs' analysis found liberal professors were fired more often for political speech than their conservative counterparts.&#xa0;</p><p>Despite the general concern about the policing of speech on college campuses among those on the right, some conservatives have vehemently criticized Turning Point USA's approach.</p><p>John Hardin, the director of university relations for the Charles Koch Foundation, <a href="https://www.charleskochfoundation.org/news/washington-post-free-speech/">in August said</a>, "Instead of supporting groups that put professors that they disagree with on watch lists, we support folks who take those professors to lunch, who co-teach with those professors and who collaborate with those professors."</p><p><span>Sarah Ruger, the director of Free Speech Initiatives for the Charles Koch Institute, described the Professor Watchlist as "truly McCarthyism 2.0" - a reference to Republican Sen. Joe McCarthy's infamous efforts to expose alleged communists in the 1950s.</span></p><p><span>"It's a platform that exists to put the names and the profiles of self-identified progressive professors out there and encourages conservative students to intimidate them," <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/paloma/daily-202/2018/08/01/daily-202-koch-network-warns-of-mccarthyism-2-0-in-conservative-efforts-to-harass-professors/5b611a871b326b0207955e90/?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.3b0db2ec59c1">Ruger told The Washington Post of the watchlist.</a>&#xa0;"If there's anything political tribes can agree on today, it's that they all want to censor someone. They just disagree on who should be silenced. That's entirely antithetical to who we are."</span></p><h2>'I support ... Islamic groups to be wrong about Israel'</h2><p>Much of Kirk's concern regarding free speech on campuses seems to be centered around the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement.</p><p>He said Turning Point USA supports the right of pro-Palestine campus groups who condone BDS to speak, but that it still seeks to "shut down" resolutions supporting BDS in student governments at colleges and universities across the US.&#xa0;</p><p>"We're trying to prevent a boycott, divestment, sanction, which is anti-free speech. So we're fighting the anti-free speech measures," Kirk said. "You understand, they're trying to say, 'We're trying boycott Israel, we're trying to divest from Israel and put sanctions on Israel,' which in essence is a targeted attempt to go after the singular Jewish state. So we say, 'No, that is anti-free speech.' We're trying to kill the resolution."</p><p>Though <a href="https://www.aclu.org/blog/free-speech/rights-protesters/laws-targeting-israel-boycotts-fail-again-court">federal courts have held</a> that state laws in Arizona and Kansas prohibiting boycotts against Israel are in violation of the First Amendment, fourteen other states still have such laws on the books. Kirk fervently denied allegations his organization's efforts to thwart BDS are in any way anti-free speech.&#xa0;</p><p>"I support Students for Justice for Palestine to speak. I support the Muslim Student Association to speak. I support ... Islamic groups to be wrong about Israel. 100%," Kirk added.&#xa0;</p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong>: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/turning-point-usa-conference-students-islam-college-campuses-2018-12">Young Trump supporters told they need to fight terrorism on college campuses by 'exposing Islam' because all Muslims are 'radical'</a></em></p><h2>'We live in a broken culture'</h2><p>Turning Point USA claims to have a presence on <a href="https://www.tpusa.com/">over 1,000 college campuses across the US,</a>&#xa0;and Kirk is confident young people are becoming more attracted to conservatism and Trumpism.&#xa0;</p><p>"We live in a broken culture," Kirk said. "Where the conservative movement is making gains really quick and where the left is really struggling right now is that we are offering remedies for a broken culture."</p><p>Kirk pointed to young men having an "identity crisis," as well as the opioid epidemic, suicide rates, and divorce rates as some of the signs that Americans face a "broken culture."</p><p>"Where conservatives win, it's being able to have remedies to that broken culture," Kirk said. "It's not even about <keyword id="6358883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="politics">politics</keyword>, it's just about making these cultural observations and saying this is what we stand for and this is who we are and I think the left is getting away from that. Because I think they're actually endorsing things that are very, very dangerous."</p><h2>'The idea of Trumpism is rooted in a philosophy that's been ignored over the last 20 or 30 years'</h2><p>Kirk seems to believe that even if Trump is not reelected in 2020, Trumpism will live on.</p><p>"The idea of Trumpism is rooted in a philosophy that's been ignored over the last 20 or 30 years, which is that Washington, DC, has grown far too powerful, that the wealthiest counties in America are all clustered around Washington, DC, that we've become way too coastal-focused, and that middle America has been suffering," Kirk said.&#xa0;</p><p>He added: "What Trump is bringing back is the sense that we can again be and we are becoming again the world superpower in every single capacity."</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Kirk said he is not happy with all aspects of the Trump presidency, and was somewhat critical of the president's cabinet choices.</p><p>"I think less Goldman Sachs the better," Kirk said, but contended Trump has "changed the mechanics of politics."</p><p>In some ways, Kirk seems to believe Trumpism has supplanted Republicanism.&#xa0; &#xa0;</p><p>"What does 'a Republican' mean anymore?" Kirk asked. "Is it Paul Ryan? Is it Mitt Romney?"</p><h2><span>'I think we should be the Kentucky basketball of immigrants'</span></h2><p>Kirk routinely expresses solidarity with the president and his positions on Twitter, especially on the topic of immigration.</p><p>In his more recent tweets, Kirk has <a href="https://twitter.com/charliekirk11/status/1076547932902572032">denounced Democrats</a> for not giving Trump the funding he wants for a border wall, praised Trump's decision to withdraw US troops from Syria, and expressed approval for the president "holding the line" in relation to the government shutdown.</p><p>Kirk's tweets often touch on undocumented immigration, which he's described as a <a href="https://twitter.com/charliekirk11/status/1076470772942671872">"serious threat"</a> to the US.</p><p>He told INSIDER that his perspectives on immigration are "originally informed"<span> by the "Judeo-Christian construct."</span>&#xa0;</p><p><span>Kirk said he's not against immigration or accepting refugees, but that he doesn't like people who "are border jumpers that cut in line."&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>"I don't think you'll find a lot of conservatives that don't want to be generous and benevolent, but you have to balance that with wisdom and self-restraint," Kirk said as he explained his position on immigration. "There has to be limitations. We live in a world of finite resources."</span></p><p><span>He said the US should focus on bringing in the "best, brightest, most operational" immigrants.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>"I think we should be the Kentucky basketball of immigrants," Kirk added.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>He also defended the president's characterization of a caravan of Central American migrants as an "invasion," noting the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the caravan contained violent criminals.</span></p><p><span>Kirk said, "Is that really what we want?"&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>In a November 1 <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2018/11/01/myth-vs-fact-caravan">news release</a>, DHS said, "There are over 270 individuals along the caravan route that have criminal histories, including known gang membership."&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>But fact-checkers have <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2018/11/09/trump-administrations-fuzzy-math-criminals-caravan/?utm_term=.dbb6861f7a43">expressed skepticism</a> over the vague nature of the DHS statement, and experts have contended migrants heading to the US from Central America are more often than not <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/09/opinion/trump-caravan-migrants-criminals.html">running away from violent crime rather than contributing to it.</a> </span></p><h2><span>If Don Jr. 'wants to be president, he could be president'</span></h2><p>Kirk's loyalty to Trump extends to the president's children.&#xa0;</p><p>He has a particularly close relationship with Trump Jr., describing him as a "good friend."
