A new <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0160412024004355#b0205">study</a> published in <em>Environment International</em> found that 14 of the 30 tampon brands tested contained measurable quantities of 16 metals, including <keyword id="21287030" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="heavy-metals" source="keywords">heavy metals</keyword> like lead and arsenic. Unlike other areas of skin, the <keyword id="22359234" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vaginal-tissue" source="keywords">vaginal tissue</keyword> readily absorbs substances, potentially leading to "systemic exposure" to these metals, warn scientists.<br /><br />The study acknowledges several possible sources for the metals in <keyword id="21056381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tampons" source="keywords">tampons</keyword>. They could be present in the cotton itself due to environmental factors or contamination. Alternatively, the metals might be added during manufacturing for purposes like pigmentation, whitening, or anti-bacterial properties. But how “safe” are they?<br /><br />We know what you're thinking: a relatively tiny chunk of Indians use tampons. But while this study claims to be the first of its kind for tampons, this is hardly the first time questionable materials have been found in a <keyword id="22359233" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sanitary-product" source="keywords">sanitary product</keyword> created for women. Other heavy metals, potentially harmful <keyword id="20406621" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chemicals" source="keywords">chemicals</keyword> and even carcinogens have previously been detected in sanitary napkins as well. And last we checked, over 40% of Indian women used <keyword id="584042" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sanitary-pads" source="Orion">sanitary pads</keyword> while menstruating.<br /><h2>Link between sanitary pads and <keyword id="22359235" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reproductive-diseases" source="keywords">reproductive diseases</keyword></h2>A 2022 <a href="https://toxicslink.org/publications/reports/wrapped-in-secrecy-toxic-chemicals-in-menstrual-products">report</a> focused on two main culprits: phthalates and volatile organic compounds that are added for elasticity and absorbency in pads. These chemicals were detected in all ten tested brands, including both inorganic and organic varieties. Popular names like <keyword id="20280828" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="whisper" source="keywords">Whisper</keyword>, Stayfree, Sofy, PeeSafe, Nua, and Plush were included in the analysis.<br /><div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="111624399" title="How did over 800 students test HIV positive in Tripura?" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>Experts have repeatedly warned of the potential <keyword id="19977451" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="health-risks" source="keywords">health risks</keyword> associated with these chemicals, going as far as to suggest that these chemicals could disrupt hormonal functions, potentially leading to PCOS, endometriosis, and hypothyroidism. Long-term exposure may even increase cancer risk. The concern is heightened by the vagina's high absorbency, allowing these chemicals to enter the body at a faster rate.<br /><br />A lot of this is conjecture based on what doctors and experts suspect, primarily because not nearly enough research has been conducted on the potential impacts of sanitary products on women’s bodies. Naturally, there’s a lack of regulation from governments on period products.<br /><h2>The glaring lack of proper labelling of sanitary products</h2>Sanitary product manufacturers love to wrap their stuff in flowery and “girly” packages, with the size of a pad’s wings and how it will last you all day long advertised in bold letters. But they don’t think it’s necessary to test their products for their content and perhaps even share that little tidbit with their customers.<br /><br />Companies making pads and tampons are usually exempt from listing ingredients as these are categorised as "medical products." However, many argue this label is misleading as pads cannot be considered medical intervention, they’re just for absorption. <br /><br />The absence of research on quality standards raises red flags. Individuals and NGOs have voiced concerns about potentially harmful chemicals in some pads but to no avail. Even existing regulations offer no solace. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) did implement higher quality standards for reusable sanitary pads, sanitary napkins and period panties. However, Without ingredient lists, it's impossible for consumers to make informed choices about their health.<br /><h2>A call for change</h2>This lack of transparency and outdated regulations create a situation where millions of women are unknowingly exposed to potential health risks. Sanitary pad companies should be required to list all ingredients on the packaging, empowering consumers with knowledge. The BIS needs to update its guidelines to include thorough testing for harmful chemicals, ensuring safety. Most of all, further research is crucial to assess the quality and safety of sanitary pads available in the Indian market.<br /><div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="111578389" title="Talc, found in baby powder and cosmetics, is “probably” cancer-causing, says WHO agency" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>While the ongoing research sheds light on a previously unknown potential health risk associated with sanitary products, we acknowledge that using a pad is a lot more hygienic and safe than using a cloth rag. But clear labelling and stricter regulations are essential to ensure the safety of individuals who rely on these products.<br />

<ul class="summary-list"><li>TikTokers are raising concern about titanium dioxide, a whitening agent, in organic tampons. </li><li>The compound is used safely in many foods and cosmetics, but it's still banned in foods in the UK. </li></ul><p>TikTokers are raising concern about an ingredient in an organic tampon brand that they say is causing symptoms like heavy bleeding and ovarian cysts. </p><p><a href="https://www.thisisl.com/">The brand, L.,</a> markets itself as "accessible period care made with ingredients inspired by nature," according to its website. But TikTokers and commenters are questioning why the tampons contain <a href="https://www.chemicalsafetyfacts.org/titanium-dioxide/">titanium dioxide</a>, a chemical compound often used as a whitening agent. </p><p>"Exposure can irritate eyes, nose, and throat, and causes cancer," TikToker <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@monirubio8">monirubio8</a> reads from a <a href="https://nj.gov/health/eoh/rtkweb/documents/fs/1861.pdf">state government webpage</a> on titanium dioxide. </p><p>"But not only that, 'such substances may have the potential for causing reproductive damage in humans,'" she continues. "Well what do you know." The video has 630,000 views and nearly 14,00 comments. </p><p>Another TikToker, <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@zt0n3r.hippie">zt0n3r.hippie,</a> responded by saying "now I know" the cause of her own reproductive health problems. "I've been on my period for 13 days, I have ovarian cysts that they have to check for cancer, and I've used five of these," she says holding an empty container of L. tampons. </p><p>The TikToker goes on to say she's been told she can't have kids due to "reproductive harm to my uterus and ovaries" and complains of serious pain at night and while trying to sleep. Her video has 3.6 million views. </p><p>Environmental and reproductive health experts have mixed views on how safe titanium dioxide in menstrual products is, but there's no evidence the tampons cause reproductive health problems like ovarian cysts or cancer. </p><h2>Some doctors recommend avoiding tampons until there's more research </h2><p>Titanium dioxide is a naturally occurring compound that's used in foods — like coffee creamer, salad dressing, and chocolate — and cosmetics, like powders, toothpaste, and sunscreen, usually as <a href="https://www.webmd.com/diet/titanium-dioxide-in-food">a bleach or to block UV damage</a>. </p><p>According to the US Food and Drug Administration, the compound is <a href="https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfcfr/cfrsearch.cfm?fr=73.575" target="_self" rel="">safe in regulated amounts </a>— meaning less than 1% of a food's weight to up to 25% of a sunscreen's concentration. </p><p>According to <a href="https://www.safecosmetics.org/get-the-facts/chemicals-of-concern/titanium-dioxide-2">Safe Cosmetics.org</a>, titanium dioxide does not penetrate healthy — or even unhealthy, burnt — skin, and so "poses no local or systemic risk to human health" when used topically.</p><p>The biggest documented concern about the compound is related to inhalation. According to the <a href="https://www.ccohs.ca/headlines/text186.html#:~:text=Titanium%20dioxide%20has%20recently%20been,production%20volume%20of%20pigments%20worldwide.">International Agency for Research on Cancer</a>, it's "possibly carcinogenic" since studies have linked lung tumors in rats with inhaling titanium dioxide. </p><p>In the UK, <a href="https://www.fas.usda.gov/data/european-union-titanium-dioxide-banned-food-additive-eu">the compound is banned</a> from foods due to the potential for it to build up in the body and act as a carcinogen. </p><p>A spokesperson for Proctor and Gamble, which manufactures the L. tampons brand, told Insider titanium dioxide is used in the thread that attaches the cord to the absorbent part of the tampon, and represents less than 0.1% of all ingredients in the product. </p><p>"It's important to know that our tampons are safe to use," he said. "Our high-quality ingredients are rigorously tested and meet strict safety and government regulations around the world." </p><p>But <a href="https://www.publichealth.columbia.edu/people/our-faculty/mk3961">Marianthi-Anna Kioumourtzoglou</a>, an assistant professor of environmental health sciences at the Columbia Mailman School of Public Health, told Insider there's not enough, or really any, research on how the compound in tampons could affect reproductive health. </p><p>"We really know very little, or almost nothing really, about something that could impact the health of millions of women," she said. Her team is working on a pilot project analyzing tampons for the presence of metals and pesticides. </p><p><a href="https://med.nyu.edu/faculty/philip-m-tierno">Dr. Philip M. Tierno, Jr.</a>, a professor of microbiology and pathology at the NYU School of Medicine, told Insider that while titanium dioxide is used in plenty of everyday products, "tampons are especially a problem" since it's possible the chemical could be absorbed into the bloodstream through the vagina's lining. </p><p>He added that the vaginal mucosa has lots of blood vessels, which allow it to absorb what's in tampons, leading to complications like toxic shock syndrome. </p><p>Tierno said he believed "truly organic tampons" don't, and shouldn't, contain chemicals like titanium dioxide. The safest bet, according to Tierno, is to use pads.  </p><p style="font-weight: 400;">But not all doctors agree. OB-GYN Dr. Jen Gunter <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Cg3GWLSAXTL/?hl=en">posted a response to the controversy on Instagram</a>, calling concerns about it "fearmongering."</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">"Titanium dioxide is not an issue," she said, adding that "titanium dioxide doesn't cause reproductive harm when it's on a tampon string." </p>

In fact, they could even save your life.</p><p>Here are some of the many ways people are thinking outside the (tampon) box to devise novel life-saving uses for tampons.</p><h2>Wound dressing</h2><p>Because tampons are sterile and highly absorbent, you can use them as bandages to stop bleeding from wounds. In fact, US Army medics have <a href="http://www.snopes.com/military/tampon.asp">reportedly</a> used them since the Vietnam War.</p><p>On and off the battlefield, they're also good for packing bloody noses or sopping up blood from a knocked out tooth. They can even plug bullet holes, though this should be used as a last resort, as <a href="http://www.intherabbithole.com/survival-tampon/">this article on In the Rabbit Hole</a> points out. You can them boil the water to sterilize it and kill germs.</p><p>Create a filter by cutting off the bottom of a plastic bottle, turning the top upside down like a funnel, and sticking a fluffed-up tampon into the neck of the bottle. Simply put, it is like leaving your actual, unerasable footprint on earth with every resource that you consume. <br /><br />When you drive your car or eat something that’s grown afar, you emit substantial amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. From buying toothpaste to using your phone, every object reaches your doorstep after a long commute, which contributes to carbon emission.<br /><br />As modern humans, almost every activity of ours contributes to climate change in one way or the other. To support sustainable businesses, you can look for stores which include options like handloom and handcrafted, organic, natural-dyed, recyclable and eco-friendly, vegan, and cruelty-free. It’s not necessary to have all of these options available all the time, but every bit helps.<br /><br />Recycle and reuse your clothes to prolong its life.
