<br />Introduced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the health insurance scheme with a grand vision is named as <keyword id="6199405" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ayushman-bharat">Ayushman Bharat</keyword> providing the subscribers a medical expenses cover of up to Rs 5 lakh. <br /><br />Here is what you must know about the scheme and the eligibility criteria that will help you benefit from the scheme.<br /><br />Called by other names such as the National Health Protection Mission (AB-NHPM) or Modicare, this government-sponsored health insurance scheme offers free coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year for medical care availed of at any government hospital or an empanelled medical care facility in India. The scheme is meant only for poor families and the economically deprived segments of the society. The scheme aims to cover about 10.74 crore beneficiary families and around 50 crore Indian citizens.<br /><br /><strong>Key aspects of <keyword id="6199968" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ayushman-Bharat-scheme">Ayushman Bharat scheme</keyword><br /></strong><br />The medical insurance cover will provide a maximum of about Rs 5 lakhs per family per year on secondary as well as tertiary medical care availed of from medical facilities.<br /><br />Eligibility is strictly based on the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) database and those that are eligible will be covered by the program automatically without having to register for it. <br /><br />If a person from an eligible family is hospitalized, the family need not spend on the treatment when they visit a government or an empanelled private hospital for treatment. <br /><br />The policy covers all kinds of diseases and the benefit offers coverage both for pre and post hospitalization expenses. Unlike other kinds of medical insurance schemes, there is no waiting period for pre-existing ailments. <br /><br />Though Aadhaar card is not a mandated requirement for availing of the medical care under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, the beneficiaries will have to produce a prescribed ID at the hospital to receive free treatment. <br /><br /><strong>Eligibility criteria for Ayushman Bharat scheme in rural areas</strong><br /><br />1. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.gettyimages.com/license/455544288">Mark Wilson/Getty Images</a></span></p><p class="caption">Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini is not hopeful for the future of the individual health insurance exchanges created by the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, based on comments he made on Wednesday.</p><p>Bertolini, whose company is one of the five large public health insurers, said that the <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-aetna-ceo-idUSKBN15U1QJ">exchanges are in a "death spiral"</a> during a speech at a Wall Street Journal conference.</p><p>"<span>It's not going to get any better, it's getting worse," said Bertolini <a href="http://www.politico.com/story/2017/02/obamacare-market-death-spiral-aetna-mark-bertolini-235041">according to Politico's Paul Demko</a>.</span></p><p><span>The idea behind Bertolini's comments are that as premiums increase on the exchanges, fewer young and healthy people will sign up for coverage.</span></p><p><span>This will leave a higher percentage of older, sicker people on the exchanges, making them more expensive for insurers. The losses from this sicker risk pool will cause insurers to pull out of the exchanges, fewer choices on the exchanges will lead to higher prices, and thus even fewer healthy people will sign up to balance the pool.</span></p><p><span>Bertolini has long expressed doubts about the exchanges. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/aetna-ditching-70-of-obamacare-business-2016-8">Aetna pulled its offerings from roughly 70%</a> of the places it was doing business last year and the CEO said <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/health-insurers-freaking-out-about-obamacare-repeal-uncertainty-2017-2">during a recent earnings call</a> that the company is considering its footprint in 2018.</span></p><p><span>During the block of a proposed merger between Aetna and Humana, however, a federal judge ruled that Aetna and Bertolini had cut their exposure to Obamacare to induce cooperation from Department of Justice to approve the merger.</span></p><p><span>In a letter to the DOJ in July, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/aetna-humana-merger-reason-for-leaving-obamacare-2016-8">Bertolini said that the company would reduce </a>its footprint in the exchanges if the DOJ blocked the deal. Bertolini claimed this was due to the loss of cost savings from the merger, <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2017/01/24/investing/aetna-obamacare-humana-merger/">but the judge said</a> the move showed that "<span>Aetna tried to leverage its participation in the exchange for favorable treatment" for the deal.</span></span></p><p><span>During the 2016-2017 open enrollment period, the total number of people signing up for insurance through the federal Heathcare.gov exchange fell by 400,000. AETNA CEO: The Obamacare exchanges are in a 'death spiral'

I was delirious with joy at the idea of leaving my college roommates - and the grungy digs we called home - in favor of cohabiting with my main squeeze.</p><p>The whole experience made me giddy, until his father insisted we get <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-renters-insurance-and-what-does-it-cover">renters' insurance</a> - and my boyfriend dutifully agreed.</p><p>But, despite my thinking the idea ridiculous, it turned out to be a savvy move: Not one year later, when a freak fire at the bakery downstairs gutted our place, I was relieved to have taken what I'd thought was archaic advice. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-is-renters-insurance">renters' insurance</a> saved us.</p><p>A handful of years later, after marrying that boyfriend and buying land together, my husband and I set out to build our dream house.</p><p>"Be sure to get <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/when-to-get-life-insurance">life insurance</a>" was my father-in-law's sage advice. I rolled my eyes, quickly calculating our combined years coming in well below retirement age. "Enough to at least cover the balance on your mortgage should one of you die," he added, causing my head to spin at the thought.</p><h2>Getting life insurance as newlyweds</h2><p>Before I knew it, a life insurance salesman was in my living room - swabbing the inside of my cheek and collecting a urine sample - and each of us became the proud owner of a 30-year <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-does-term-life-insurance-work">term life insurance policy</a>. Twenty-three years later, I am still prone to feeling giddy at the smart investment I made in my family's future.</p><p>I ultimately changed my mind about getting life insurance for two reasons: First, if someone who had walked this path before me could smooth my journey, I was in. Plus, the bottom line was so cheap at just $300 a year it didn't make sense not to invest.</p><p>This was our primary motivation as a young couple: If one of us died, would the surviving spouse be able to afford the lifestyle we had created for our growing family? With the addition of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-term-life-insurance">term life insurance</a>, the answer became a resounding "Yes!"</p><h2>Life insurance still makes sense two decades later</h2><p>In the ensuing two decades, life has progressed rapidly, leaving many twists and turns in its wake. My husband and I <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-refinance-a-mortgage-to-save-money-every-month">refinanced our mortgage</a> once or twice as a couple and, following our divorce, I went on to purchase the home independently. Each year, the balance I owe on my mortgage decreases while the value of my life insurance policy remains steady.</p><p>When our youngest daughter died, my now ex-husband and I collected a lump sum of $10,000 (unbeknownst to us, our respective policies carry riders for each of our minor children).</p><p>In the same way our renters' insurance alleviated the financial burden of replacing our personal belongings - leaving us free to focus solely on relocating in the aftermath of that fire - the life insurance benefit meant we were able to secure a family plot at the cemetery, cover cremation/funeral costs, and purchase a gravestone without added financial burden. This would not have happened without life insurance.</p><p>I continue to have huge peace of mind knowing that the term policies my now late (and former) father-in-law insisted we purchase will allow my children to remain in their childhood home - with a good chunk of cash leftover - should something catastrophic happen to me. All for what seems like pennies each month. </p><h2>Why we chose term life insurance over whole life</h2><p>I was conflicted as to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-the-difference-between-term-and-whole-life-insurance">term versus whole life insurance</a>.</p><p>The difference? In a nutshell, the dollars paid into term life insurance premiums provide a death benefit to your beneficiaries if you die during the specified term - in my case, 30 years. With <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-whole-life-insurance-a-policy-with-no-expiry-date">whole life</a>, the money invested in premiums builds cash value that can be used later in life or will add to the death benefit that is guaranteed, though whole life comes at a much higher cost than term life.</p><p>I made my choice following a general rule of thumb: My family's need for life insurance will likely end when the 30-year term expires. My kids will be grown, my mortgage will have been paid off, and I will have accrued retirement savings.</p><p>I don't really want to think about dying - especially at the tender age of 45 - but planning is the prudent thing to do. In the same way that we purchase auto insurance and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-does-homeowners-insurance-cover">homeowner's insurance</a>, life insurance is a sensible choice. </p><h2>Life insurance still gives me peace of mind</h2><p>Looking back, my only regret is that I did not purchase a larger policy. My term policy comes in at just under $300 each year - that's a cost of about 81 cents per day - a figure we landed on as the death benefit of $250,000 would have allowed me to pay off our mortgage and continue on as a stay-at-home mother in the event my husband died. Suffice it to say, I could have afforded twice that.</p><p>I stumbled upon a fantastic quotation the other day from "The Power of Moments" by brothers Chip and Dan Heath: "We feel most comfortable when things are certain, but we feel most alive when they're not."</p><p>From my perspective, this kind of sums up life insurance for me: I'm certain I have done my best to put my proverbial ducks in a row, in case the need arises, and I find comfort in this knowledge. I reluctantly followed my father-in-law's advice to purchase life insurance 23 years ago, but looking back my only regret is not buying a bigger policy

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Thomson Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Republican U.S. president-elect Donald Trump speaks at his election night rally in Manhattan, New York</p></div><p></p></div></div>The Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare, has experienced hiccups of late.</p><p>An older, sicker, and more expensive pool of patients have led to losses for health insurers and pull backs from the ACA's public exchanges. Increased costs - mostly in states that have not expanded Medicaid - and higher deductibles have put pressure on Americans' wallets.</p><p>On the flip side, one of its successes has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-obamacare-uninsured-rate-drops-2015-7" target="_blank">come from the fact that 20 million Americans</a> who would did not have coverage before Obamacare now have it. Through the exchanges, Medicaid expansion or policies such as young people getting to stay on their parents' insurance until they're 26 years old, have driven down the uninsured rate in the US to an all-time low.</p><p>With the election of Donald Trump on Tuesday, however, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/obamacare-trump-election-2016-11" target="_blank">the ACA appears to be in jeopardy</a>. Trump has repeatedly promised to repeal and replace the ACA, and both Republican leaders in Congress - House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell - said Wednesday that repealing the law was a top priority.</p><p>Trump <a href="https://www.greatagain.gov/policy/healthcare.html">released his heath plan on his transition website, greatagain.gov</a>, on Thursday. While it was vague in its details, it appears to have one glaring flaw: It does not yet outline a solution for what to do with the over 20 million Americans with insurance from the law.</p><p>Based on the plan on Trump's transitional website, there are some stabs at maintaining the coverage for these people.</p><p>"<span>A Trump Administration will work with Congress to repeal the ACA and replace it with a solution that includes Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), and returns the historic role in regulating health insurance to the States," read the Trump transition website.</span></p><p><span>HSAs are tax-advantaged accounts that can be used for medical expenses. These are typically used in conjunction with high-deductible insurance plans to help ease the burden of out-of-pocket costs. But HSAs alone are not a direct substitute for coverage, but typically used in conjunction. Additionally, most Obamacare plans are high-deductible plans already and a <a href="http://healthblog.ncpa.org/hsa-eligible-plans-are-widely-available-in-obamacare-exchanges/">significant portion have HSAs.</a></span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Win McNamee/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Donald Trump and Barack Obama.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p>Trump's plan also seemingly contradicts itself in regards to regulation of health insurance and the ability to sell insurance over state lines.</p><p>"<span>To maximize choice and create a dynamic market for health insurance, the Administration will work with Congress to enable people to purchase insurance across state lines," read the Trump plan.</span></p><p>Currently, insurance is regulated on a <a href="http://www.naic.org/state_web_map.htm">state-by-state basis by insurance commissioners</a>, who set their own rules. Trump's plan to "do away with state lines" doesn't necessarily increase coverage, experts say, and it would simply allow business to be domiciled in whatever state has the most favorable regulation or give more power to the federal government in regulating insurance.</p><p>Additionally, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/01/upshot/the-problem-with-gop-plans-to-sell-health-insurance-across-state-lines.html?_r=0">as noted by health-policy experts</a>, state regulators are not the largest impediment to introducing plans in new areas. That would be setting up new hospital networks, instead.</p><p>Trump also proposed to reinstitute high-risk pools, which were plans that allowed people with preexisting conditions to get plans that were partially subsidized by the state government.</p><p>"<span>The Administration also will work with both Congress and the States to re-establish high-risk pools - a proven approach to ensuring access to health insurance coverage for individuals who have significant medical expenses and who have not maintained continuous coverage," said the Trump plan.</span></p><p>These plans, however, typically <a href="http://kff.org/health-reform/issue-brief/high-risk-pools-for-uninsurable-individuals/">had premiums twice as high</a> as normal individual health plans, which made them a serious deterrent for many of the people with ACA plans and preexisiting conditions. Additionally, <a href="http://kff.org/health-reform/issue-brief/high-risk-pools-for-uninsurable-individuals/">only 226,000 people took part</a> in these pools at their peak in 2011.</p><p>This also does not account for those that have received care from expanded Medicaid provisions. Trump has previously said that he would provide funding in a block for states to do as they please with Medicaid. The transition site reads that the administration plans to "<span>enable states to experiment with innovative methods."</span></p><p><span>Whether the <a href="http://khn.org/news/millions-could-lose-medicaid-coverage-under-trump-plan/">15.7 million people who have gained access</a> to Medicaid through the ACA expansion will keep it is not clear from Trump's plan.</span></p><p>Theoretically, by defunding the various parts of the law, these people could simply be out of luck. As Timothy Jost, a professor for health law at Washington and Lee University and an advocate of the ACA, told Business insider on Wednesday: "Some of them will die. <span>That's what happens when you lose health coverage."</span></p><p><span>Interestingly enough, in the day after Trump's election was the strongest day of enrollment for ACA exchange plans so far. Politico's Dan Diamond speculated this could be because people want to access coverage before changes to the healthcare system.</span></p><p>That's due to potentially good reason: The current Trump plan is vague, and there is a good chance contributions will come from congressional leaders such as Ryan. The glaring flaw in Trump's health plan

Some of the preexisting conditions that insurers declined coverage to before the ACA, according to KFF, included diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, which affects millions of Americans.</p><p><strong>These preexisting conditions included: </strong></p><p>AIDS/HIV, lupus, alcohol abuse/Drug abuse with recent treatment, Severe mental disorders such as bipolar disorder or an eating disorder, Alzheimer's/dementia, Multiple sclerosis, Rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and other inflammatory joint disease, Muscular dystrophy, cancer, severe obesity, cerebral palsy, organ transplant, congestive heart failure, paraplegia, coronary artery/heart disease, bypass surgery, paralysis, Crohn's disease/ ulcerative colitis, Parkinson's disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease /emphysema, pending surgery or hospitalization, diabetes mellitus, pneumocystic pneumonia, epilepsy, pregnancy or expectant parent, hemophilia, sleep apnea, hepatitis C, stroke, kidney disease, renal failure, transsexualism.  </p><p><strong>Other conditions that could make it harder to purchase a health insurance plan included, according to the KFF:</strong></p><p>Acne, allergies, anxiety, asthma, basal cell skin cancer (a type of skin cancer that doesn't tend to spread), depression, ear infections, fractures, high cholesterol, hypertension, incontinence, joint injuries, kidney stones, menstrual irregularities, migraine headaches, overweight, restless leg syndrome, tonsillitis, urinary tract infections, varicose veins, and vertigo.</p><p>Some insurance plans before the ACA also counted rape and domestic violence as preexisting conditions, though <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2017/05/04/health/pre-existing-condition-rape-domestic-violence-insurance/">CNN reports some states have banned that practice</a>.</p><h2><p class="source"><span>Associated Press/Charles Dharapak</span></p><p class="caption">In this March 23, 2010, file photo President Barack Obama is applauded after signing the Affordable Care Act into law in the East Room of the White House in Washington.</p></h2><h2>Under the ACA</h2><p>One of the critical parts of the ACA was prohibiting health insurers from denying coverage or charging more for people with preexisting conditions. That went <a href="https://www.hhs.gov/healthcare/about-the-aca/pre-existing-conditions/index.html">into effect starting in 2014</a>, and it's still the case.</p><p>That means that if you had any of that litany of conditions listed above (let's say asthma), you still could have the same insurance as someone who managed to have a clean bill of heath, and someone who is a cancer survivor, pregnant, or obese. </p><h2>How preexisting conditions could return</h2><p>The version of the AHCA that just passed the House includes the<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/macarthur-amendment-ahca-trumpcare-obamacare-repeal-2017-4"> MacArthur amendment</a> which can allow states to avoid some of the regulations the ACA imposed. That policy, experts argue, could weaken the regulations around preexisting conditions.</p><p>Republicans, on the other hand, argue that the bill protects those with preexisting conditions.</p><p>"The amendment is very clear: Under no circumstance can people be denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition," House Speaker Paul Ryan <a href="http://www.speaker.gov/general/verified-macarthur-amendment-strengthens-ahca-protects-people-pre-existing-conditions">said in a release</a>.</p><p>But the difference between being denied coverage and not being able to afford coverage is the gray area that has people concerned.</p><p>"The various patchwork solutions offered by lawmakers would still leave the millions of patients we represent, who have serious and chronic health conditions, at risk of not being able to access life-saving treatments and care," a group of 10 patient advocacy organizations said <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-doctors-think-of-republican-healthcare-plan-2017-5/#10-patient-advocacy-groups-there-is-no-substitute-for-fundamental-unequivocal-protections-for-people-with-pre-existing-conditions-1">in a release Wednesday</a>.</p><p>The bill now has to pass the Senate, and Senate Republicans has signaled potentially scrapping the House's bill and coming up with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/senate-plan-for-healthcare-bill-ahca-2017-5">one of their own</a>.</p>            <h3>NOW WATCH: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-cassini-saturn-finale-closest-images-2017-4">NASA just got its closest look at Saturn yet - here's what it saw</a></h3>                                    Please enable Javascript to watch this video

Acne, pregnancy, and sleep apnea - here's every condition that could get you denied health insurance under 'Trumpcare'

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Political analyist David Gergen called President Donald Trump's reaction to the Republican health care bill's failure, "delusional" on Friday.</p><p>Gergen compared Trump to House Speaker Paul Ryan in his remarks, saying "I thought Paul Ryan manned up, he took responsibility," but that Trump "is a man who just shoves off on other people and describes things in ways that are just misleading."</p><p>While the panelists discussed past presidents who stumbled politically in their first 100 days - John F. Kennedy and Bill Clinton for example - Gergen said of Trump's early aughts:</p><p>"When you add up the totality of it, you said this is his worst week of his presidency, I think this might be the worst 100 days we've ever seen of a president," Gergen said.</p><p>He lambasted Trump's showing as president, saying:</p><p>"Earlier this week his credibility took a direct hit over the wiretapping, and now his capacity is taking a direct hit. He came to us as the dealmaker, his ultimate promise was he was the dealmaker and he was going to make the system work, and that so clearly has failed."</p><p>In the recent days since it became clear the GOP's American Health Care Act would not have enough votes to pass, Trump has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-freedom-caucus-ahca-obamacare-replacement2017-3">attacked</a> the House Freedom Caucus and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-blames-democrats-trumpcare-2017-3">blamed House Democrats</a> for the bill not passing, saying "We had no Democrat support, no votes from the Democrats," which made the passing "very difficult," despite Republicans holding a House majority.</p><p>He also <a href="http://www.mediaite.com/tv/trump-on-health-care-pelosi-schumer-are-the-losers-because-now-they-own-obamacare/">called</a> Reps. 'His credibility is taking a direct hit': CNN political analyst tears into Trump over GOP healthcare bill

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Jim Bourg/Reuters</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>For the majority of Americans who receive health insurance through their employer, there is some good news and some bad news.</p><p>The Kaiser Family Foundation, a nonpartisan think tank addressing health policy issues, released its <a href="http://kff.org/health-costs/press-release/average-annual-workplace-family-health-premiums-rise-modest-3-to-18142-in-2016-more-workers-enroll-in-high-deductible-plans-with-savings-option-over-past-two-years/?utm_campaign=KFF-2016-September-EHBS&amp;utm_content=39585919&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter">annual Employer Heath Benefits Survey</a> on Wednesday and looked at the cost of insurance for Americans.</p><p>Based on the data Kaiser gathered it appears that the hit directly to American's wallets is increasing dramatically, but the growth in their monthly payments is slowing down.</p><h2>Good news first</h2><p>The good news is that premium costs, the basic monthly payment to be covered, are growing at an incredibly slow rate compared to recent history.</p><p><a href="http://kff.org/health-costs/press-release/average-annual-workplace-family-health-premiums-rise-modest-3-to-18142-in-2016-more-workers-enroll-in-high-deductible-plans-with-savings-option-over-past-two-years/?utm_campaign=KFF-2016-September-EHBS&amp;utm_content=39585919&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter">According to the Kaiser survey</a>, average family premium costs increased just 3% between 2015 and 2016 to $18,412.</p><p>"This year's low family premium increase is similar to last year's (4%) and reflects a significant slowdown over the past 15 years," said the release from Kaiser. "Since 2011, average family premiums have increased 20 percent, more slowly than the previous five years (31% increase from 2006 and 2011) and more slowly than the five years before that (63% from 2001 to 2006)."</p><p>So, the monthly cost for most workers is still going up, but not by nearly as much as premiums used to.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image on-image"><a title_source="Kaiser Family Foundation" title_caption="" class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/57d97afe077dcc1c008b5d15-960/screen shot 2016-09-14 at 12.28.12 pm.png"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span></a><p class="source"><span>Kaiser Family Foundation</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>The bad news</h2><p>The main driver of the slowing in premiums, unfortunately, is the rise of high deductible plans, according to Kaiser. In 2016, 83% of workers have a deductible, or amount that they have to pay themselves for medical care before insurance covers it, at an average of $1,478 per worker. The average deductible for workers who have one has gone up $486, or 49%, since 2011.</p><p>Additionally, the survey found 51% of workers have a deductible over $1,000, the first time this has happened since the survey began in 1999.</p><p>"We're seeing premiums rising at historically slow rates, which helps workers and employers alike, but it's made possible in part by the more rapid rise in the deductibles workers must pay," said Drew Altman, CEO of Kaiser, in a release accompanying the survey.</p><p>This means that Americans aren't paying too much more on a month-by-month basis, but when they get sick they have to pay more out of pocket costs.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image on-image"><a title_source="Kaiser Family Foundation" title_caption="" class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/57d98016077dcc67208b4baf-960/screen shot 2016-09-14 at 12.28.26 pm.png"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span></a><p class="source"><span>Kaiser Family Foundation</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>According to <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nhis/earlyrelease/insur201609.pdf">data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</a>, around 25% of all Americans have high deductible plans and another 15% have high deductible plans with an added health savings account.</p><p>As we've noted before, this increase in high deductible plans is impacting everything <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-why-healthcare-costs-seem-like-theyre-skyrocketing-2016-9">from inflation data</a> to patients <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mylan-partly-blaming-obamacare-for-epipen-price-increase-2016-8">noticing the increased costs of drugs.</a></p><p>There may be a variety of reasons for this. One explanation is that increasing drug prices and costs from medical suppliers have gotten so bad that employers finally decided to share the price hikes with workers. Americans' out-of-pocket healthcare costs are skyrocketing

<p>We pay more for <keyword id="6354525" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Healthcare">healthcare</keyword> than any country in the world and we only get <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-american-health-care-system-sucks-2013-10">average results</a>. And tens of millions of Americans have no health insurance.</p>
<p>Our latest attempt to address this situation, Obamacare, is a mind-numbing kluge of laws and policies that is off to a very rough start. And even if Obamacare ends up working, it will only fix part of the problem.</p>
<p>The problem, as a <a href="http://content.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,2136864,00.html">ground-breaking article by Steve Brill</a> made clear, is that America's healthcare providers and insurers treat people differently. If you're lucky enough to be included in a big insurance plan provided by a huge entity with a lot of negotiating leverage (such as the federal government), you pay low rates and low prices. If you're unfortunate enough to be in a high-risk group or not to be included in any plan, you pay sky-high prices. Or you get all your "healthcare" from the emergency room and, thus, lay the costs off on everyone else that way.</p>
<p>The answer, as Brill's article also made clear, is a fully national health insurance system, in which all Americans are covered in the same massive group and for-profit insurers and healthcare providers can't pick and choose who to cover and how much to charge them. This system would effectively extend the current Medicare and Medicaid system to the whole population, and, in so doing, make it even more efficient.</p>
<p>As in some other countries with national health insurance, Americans insured under this system would also be free to buy additional healthcare services, including additional private insurance. The system, in other words, wouldn't limit anyone's ability to pay for "premium" heathcare services if they chose to.</p>
<p>But a lot of Americans still hate that idea.</p>
<p>They have been told since birth that "national healthcare" is a disgrace.</p>
<p>They have been brainwashed so thoroughly by America's vastly profitable medical industrial complex that they their resistance to reality and change has become a religion.</p>
<p>Anti-change advocates just claim, absurdly, that American currently has "the finest healthcare system in the world" and then cite horror stories about sick people dying in streets because they will have to wait so long to get the (terrible) healthcare services available to them under national healthcare. </p>
<p>(This horror story, naturally, is presented as the polar opposite of our current system, In fact, in many ways, it's similar. Today, in America, many people without health insurance spend their lives waiting until they get so sick that they can go wait in emergency rooms. And then hospitals effectively send their bills to everyone else.)</p>
<p>Anyway, any American who is skeptical about national health insurance but has an open mind should read this testimonial from another American who is currently living in a country with national heath insurance - Britain.</p>
<p>The American, Dawn Rutherford Marchant, lives in the UK with her family. She was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-expats-in-england-2013-10">recently asked on Quora to describe her life there</a>. Amid this description (<a href="https://www.quora.com/The-United-States-of-America/What-is-it-like-to-move-to-England-from-the-States">full answer here</a>), she had the following to say about Britain's national healthcare system:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">A massive advantage of living here is the National Health Service.  If an American could understand it, they would be amazed by its magnificence.  </p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">In this past week I have seen an ENT consultant surgeon and have had surgery scheduled in a few weeks' time.  There was no direct cost to me.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Tonight my GP (family doctor) rang at 8pm to check in on another health issue.  She is chasing a consultant to authorise a new medication and will ring me back next week.  This did not cost me a penny.  </p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">So, three doctors and one medical procedure without a form to fill in or a bill to pay.  Pretty damn impressive stuff --yes, I know it is in our taxes but the system works well.  It is 'from birth to grave' care all woven together into one service -- ambulance to GP to hospital to nursing care.  There are all kinds of synergies created by such a system.  It is to be deeply respected, emulated, and not feared.</p>
<p>The British National Health Service was <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Health_Service_(England)">created shortly after World War 2</a>, when everyone began to realize what a mess the system of private and municipal insurance was. It was a political challenge to get it passed - not surprisingly, those doing well under the status quo pushed back - but it passed.</p>
<p>The NHS now costs the UK <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-american-health-care-system-sucks-2013-10">less than half as much per person as the U.S. system does</a>. It is paid for with an ~11% tax. The contributions equate to about $3,000 a year per person.</p>
<p>In addition to the National Health Service, the UK also has private insurers, which about 10% of the population choose to use.</p>
<p>In other words, the British system has all the benefits we say we love so much - the ability to pay more for premium heathcare if we want it - and it also covers the basics for everyone in the country at half of our per-capita costs.</p>
<p>Not bad!</p>

Anyone Skeptical Of National Health Insurance Should Read This Short Story About How Much Better It Is

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news">News</keyword> of a new <keyword id="381358" type="SPORT" weightage="60" keywordseo="European-super-league">European Super League</keyword> has rocked the <keyword id="3071" type="SPORT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Soccer">soccer</keyword> world.</li><li>The new league will take 12 elite clubs from their longstanding domestic leagues.</li><li>The announcement of the new framework hardly accounted for the clubs' existing women's teams.</li></ul><p>A dozen of the largest and most influential soccer clubs on the planet have joined forces to form <a href="https://www.insider.com/european-super-league-gary-neville-rips-apart-new-competition-plans-2021-4">the European Super League - a new competitive infrastructure that promises to tear apart the framework of European soccer</a> as we've long known it.</p><p>But where the women's game factors into these grand plans is anybody's guess.</p><div type="image" title="lucy bronze sam kerr" height="1874" width="2500" msid="82152396" hostid="261"></div><p>Each of the 12 clubs - Premier League's Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur; Atlético Madrid, Barcelona, and Real Madrid of Spain's La Liga; and Italian Serie A's AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Juventus - released a joint statement outlining ambitions for the new league on their respective websites.</p><p>And despite the fact that all 12 of those franchises feature women's teams of their own, Sunday's European Super League release hardly acknowledged the existence of women's soccer. The clubs simply cast away their women's teams as afterthoughts and essentially left players with an "IOU" in lieu of fleshing out plans for a women's wing of the new competition.</p><div type="image" title="jenni hermoso" height="1666" width="2222" msid="82152399" hostid="261"></div><p>"As soon as practicable after the start of the men's competition, a corresponding women's league will also be launched, helping to advance and develop the women's game," <a href="https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/431801-leading-european-football-clubs-announce-new-super-league-competition">the statement said</a>.</p><p>And that's it. That's all the release had to say on the matter of women's soccer.</p><p>Shortly after the statement from the European Super League on Sunday, UEFA and other soccer governing bodies - as well as the English, Spanish, and Italian domestic leagues - <a href="https://www.uefa.com/insideuefa/mediaservices/mediareleases/news/0268-12121411400e-7897186e699a-1000--statement-by-uefa-english-fa-rfef-figc-premier-league-laliga-le/">released a joint statement</a> to condemn the plans. The backlash extended as far as threats to <a href="https://www.insider.com/european-super-league-lionel-messi-cristiano-ronaldo-banned-international-football-2021-4">ban participating players from the FIFA World Cup</a> and other international competitions with their national teams.</p><div type="image" title="sara gama juventus.JPG" height="2395" width="3193" msid="82152401" hostid="261"></div><p>Between the European Super League utterly failing to account for the women's game and the current powers of the soccer universe waging war on member institutions, the women's teams and players involved have been given absolutely no insurance policy.</p><p>If the European Super League fails to implement a timely framework for competition on the women's side and athletes are barred from national team appearances and competition in their current domestic leagues, some of the top women's players on the planet may be left without a place to play altogether.</p><div type="image" title="sam kerr.JPG" height="1665" width="2221" msid="82152405" hostid="261"></div><p>No more Sam Kerr backflips after hat tricks. No more clinical Vivianne Miedema finishes. No more Lucy Bronze defensive masterclasses, Jennifer Hermoso screamers, or Ellie Roebuck high-flying saves.</p><p>And American stars aren't immune to the repercussions, either. Five US Women's National Team players - Sam Mewis, Rose Lavelle, Abby Dahlkemper, Tobin Heath, and Christen Press - could also find themselves caught in the crossfire between the European Super League and the traditional powers of the soccer world.</p><div type="image" title="tobin heath christen press" height="1452" width="1937" msid="82152407" hostid="261"></div><p>The European Super League devoted just 27 of 761 words in its release to addressing plans - or lack thereof - for the women's game, but that was enough to threaten the future of women's soccer for many of the most elite athletes and teams on the planet.</p><p>It's certainly a questionable approach to "helping to advance and develop the women's game," as the release promised, but surely we'll know whether or not it's effective "as soon as practicable after the start of the men's competition."</p>

At least eight workers, working in Camilla, Georgia, Wallula, Washington, Columbus Junction, Iowa, and Dakota City, Nebraska have died.</p><p>A Tyson representative told Business Insider that the company is not sharing the specific number of cases or deaths, as it is an "ever-changing situation." </p><p>In Tyson's open letter, the chairman describes steps the company has taken to protect workers, including taking employees' temperatures, requiring workers to wear facemasks, additional daily deep cleaning, and installing workstation dividers. </p><p>Tyson said the company has relaxed its attendance policy "to encourage workers to stay at home when they're sick or feel uneasy about coming to work." Tyson has also waived the waiting period to qualify for short-term disability, as well as the co-pay, co-insurance, and deductible costs for COVID-19 testing. </p><p>The company still does not offer fully paid sick leave, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tyson-workers-die-ill-covid-19-without-paid-sick-leave-2020-4">with short-term disability covering 60% of workers' pay.</a></p><p>"What gave us faith in the past and gives me faith today is knowing that together, we will find the right path to take care of our team members and our communities, while providing safe and healthy food for you, our consumers," Tyson wrote in the open letter. </p><p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/organizations/meat-poultry-processing-workers-employers.html">recently released</a> specific guidance for meat and poultry processing facilities, which discuss distinctive risks workers face, such as long shifts in which they are in close contact with others.</p><p>The CDC and OSHA recommendations include requiring six feet of distance between workers, modifying incentive programs to make sure they do not punish workers for taking sick leave, and screening employees for symptoms. OSHA also urged employees to submit a complaint if they face illegal retaliation for raising concerns over safety and health conditions.</p><p><div type="image" title="Iowa Farmer Hogs" height="715" width="954" msid="75412853" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Farmers have been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/milk-produce-beer-whats-being-dumped-coronavirus-pandemic-2020-4">forced to destroy</a> goods such as milk, vegetables, and farm animals as the supply chain has broken down during the coronavirus pandemic. </p><p>"Farmers across the nation simply will not have anywhere to sell their livestock to be processed, when they could have fed the nation," Tyson wrote. "Millions of animals – chickens, pigs and cattle – will be depopulated because of the closure of our processing facilities. The food supply chain is breaking." </p><p>Depopulation means that farmers kill animals and bury, compost, or incinerate the bodies of livestock instead of sending them to meat processing plants where they would be turned into food.</p><p>Delmarva Poultry Industry Inc. <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/25/us/chickens-depopulated-delmarva-plants-delaware-maryland/index.html">announced that two million chickens</a> on farms in Delaware and Maryland would have to be killed, because the processing plant lacked the necessary workers to process the birds.
