The eastern parts of the country such as Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha are expected to experience above-normal temperatures in May with the likelihood of heat-wave conditions on some days, the weather office said on Friday. However, parts of northwest and west-central India are expected to experience warmer nights and below-normal temperatures during the day, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in the monthly outlook for temperature and rainfall for May. The weather office said normal to above-normal rainfall was expected in the northwest and west central parts of the country in May, including in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and parts of western Uttar Pradesh. Large swathes of the northeastern region, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and south Karnataka are expected to witness below-normal rains. According to the weather office, the average rainfall for the country in May is 91-109 per cent of the Long Period Average of 61.4 mm. "Above-normal heat wave days are expected over most parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, east Uttar Pradesh, coastal Andhra Pradesh and some parts of North Chhattisgarh, east Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and coastal Gujarat during May," Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the Director General of IMD said here. He said the neutral <keyword id="51549" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="El-Nino" source="Orion">El Nino</keyword> conditions prevalent over the equatorial Pacific region were expected to continue through May with a majority of weather models indicating the region beginning to warm up during the monsoon season. El Nino conditions, or warming of the equatorial Pacific Ocean, are said to have an impact on monsoon rains in India. However, other factors such as the sea surface temperatures in the Indian Ocean (known as the Indian Ocean Dipole) also are known to influence weather in India. Mohapatra said neutral IOD conditions were prevailing over the Indian Ocean which were likely to turn positive during the upcoming season. He said positive Indian Ocean Dipole conditions are known to favour the Indian monsoon and help temper the impact of El Nino. Earlier this month, the IMD had forecast a normal monsoon season with 96 per cent rainfall of the Long Period Average of 87 cm rainfall. The weather office is expected to update its forecast towards the end of May. Eastern India may experience heat wave in May, says IMD

India is reeling under severe drought conditions and heat wave, breaking past records. Maharashtra, Telangana are among 10 states that are reeling under severe humanitarian crisis due to water scarcity. 
 
Another such state is Karnataka, which is going through worst drought in 10 years. Around 3.1 crore people and 22759 villages are drought struck, leading to a massive exodus of people. Although an exodus during summers is a common phenomenon in Karnataka, this time the figures have intensified and are alarming at around 3-4 lakh, including Hyderabad.

People in Karnataka are digging up wells, areas near rivers in search of water. Such is the situation that they are even exploiting water for the cattle. 
 
In Bengaluru, wells have been dug as deep as 1,200 ft and there has been a six-fold dip in water table in urban areas and three-fold fall in rural Karnataka since 2005.

Areas such as Mysuru, Chitradurga, Tumakuru, Kalaburagi, Karwar, etc are staring at worst days to come since beside the rapid depletion of ground water, whatever water is left is also contaminated. 
 
The state government has stepped up efforts in this regard and is sending water tankers, however, there are still many villages who are yet to receive the aid. 
 
Even the Centre has approved Rs 723 crore for Karnataka, against the demand of Rs.1,417 crore for damage to the rabi or winter crop due to widespread drought. 
 
The repeat woes of Karnataka are resonating with the other states too.

It also forecasted a heatwave in states like Madhya Pradesh and Bihar for the next four days. The weather agency also said that mercury had soared as high as 45 degrees Celsius in many places across the country in May. Speaking to ANI, Senior <keyword id="19933636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IMD" source="keywords">IMD</keyword> scientist Dr Naresh Kumar said, "..From April till the last few days, continuous western disturbances were influencing Northwest India, due to which parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand experienced isolated rainfall. Due to this, the temperatures were not very high. In May, the temperature reached 45 degrees Celsius in many places. Even today, the temperature has already reached 45 degrees Celsius in Rajasthan," he said. "In Punjab and Haryana, the temperature is also near 44 degrees Celsius and the conditions of the heatwave are similar to those in Uttar Pradesh...A heatwave is likely in Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh for the next 5 days and in Madhya Pradesh and Bihar for 4 days, after which there may be mild thunderstorms, due to which the temperature may drop slightly...," Kumar added. Similarly, for the southern states, he said, "Heavy to very heavy rains are likely in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and South Karnataka in the next 5 days..." The Met department in its weather advisory has said that heat to severe heat wave conditions are likely over the plains of Northwest India and Bihar during the next 5 days and Heat wave conditions are very likely to commence over East and Central India from May 18. The Met department further said that a wet spell with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to continue over south Peninsular India till May 23. IMD forcasts heatwave for few states in next 5 days

<ul><li>IMD forecasts a searing summer with “above normal” temperatures in most of northeast, eastern, central India and parts of northwest India.</li><li>Japanese electronics brand Panasonic expects a good summer with double digit growth.</li><li> JM Financial is of the view that demand for ACs will pick up this March and dealers are stocking up inventory.</li></ul>The summer of 2023 got off to an early start, and even with gusts of hail and wind, unpredictable and unseasonal weather is bringing cheer to makers of air conditioners. “We believe summer-23 is likely to be a healthy season for <keyword id="7743494" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ac-manufacturers" source="Orion">AC manufacturers</keyword>, given soaring temperature and higher probability of occurrence of heat waves across cities and normalisation of commercial activities,” said a report by JM Financial. The report suggests that AC demand will pick up this March, and dealers have already started stocking up inventory in anticipation of good sales. Analysts at JM Financial believe that this year is widely expected to be a little hotter than the previous two years globally “mainly because of the expected end of the strongest ever La Niña event”. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) too forecasts a searing summer with “above normal” temperatures in most of northeast, eastern, central India and parts of northwest India. In fact in March, several parts of the country have been impacted with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india/news/erratic-rains-thunderstorms-more-in-march-impacts-lives-and-livelihoods/slidelist/98807776.cms">erratic environmental changes </a>including early monsoon, hailstorms and strong winds. This was right after an unusually hot February. Besides, it also expects heat waves during March-May in most parts of India, except for the northeastern states, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala and coastal Karnataka. Hot summer to bring hot sales for AC manufacturers Japanese electronics brand Panasonic also expects a good summer with double digit growth. “At Panasonic, we are expecting healthy growth for our summer products such as ACs, refrigerators, etc., to name a few. Last year for our cooling products like ACs and refrigerators, we registered around 35% (for April 2022 till February 2023 as compared to the same period in 2021). this year we are hoping for continued growth momentum registering double-digit growth,” said Fumiyasu Fujimori, MD, Panasonic Marketing India, Panasonic Life Solutions India. High demand from Mumbai &amp; Bengaluru Analysts say that demand has already picked up in anticipation of a hot summer. The report stated that demand in all major cities like Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata witnessed moderation currently, whereas Mumbai, Bengaluru and certain pockets in Ahmedabad are witnessing pickup in demand given the early onset of summer. The brokerage firm has stated that Voltas remains their top pick, followed by <keyword id="152126" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="blue-star" source="Orion">Blue Star</keyword> and Amber Enterprises. Analysts feel that rising disposable income, improving standard of living and willingness to spend on comfort is the reason why demand for such white appliances is increasing. “With the increase in disposable income, rapid urbanization, improving standard of living, and easy financing options, consumers are willing to spend on appliances that are energy-efficient, smart, connected, and provide comfort and convenience that enhances their lifestyles,” said JM Financial. The Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association is expecting sales in the summer periods of March to May this year to be anywhere between 15% to 20% higher than last year, according to a report by <a href="https://www.cnbctv18.com/business/consumer-durable-makers-gear-up-make-hay-while-sun-shines-expect-20-percent-growth-in-sales-16226681.htm">CNBCTV18</a>. Channel check with dealers by JM Financial shows that demand for Voltas and other brands like Lloyd, Hitachi and Panasonic is better than previous years. They say that currently, demand for products of Voltas remains high, especially in lower tier cities because of higher brand awareness. However, with increased product offering by other brands, dealers anticipate pickup in demand from other brands as well. Analysts say Blue Star continues to be a preferred brand in Southern markets, while their presence in the North is also increasing. Other players such as Lloyd and LG continue to be preferred brands of choice for customers in South India whereas Daikin, Hitachi, LG and Panasonic are prominent in West India, says the report. AC manufacturers expect strong growth this summer led by unseasonal weather

 Temperature in Rajasthan’s Churu soared to 50 degree Celsius on June 1— the day when monsoon normally hits Southern parts of India. Here are some good and bad news. Monsoon would be on time and would hit the Kerala coast in the next 3-4 days as the conditions are favourable, however, it would not provide any respite from the scorching heat to people across north and central India. Currently, temperatures across most parts of the country were recorded 5 degrees Celsius above the average temperatures. 
 

	A slight respite is expected from the dry and hot westerly winds in the northern India from May 30 with forecast of thunderstorm, dust storm and rainfall. "Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon over the next few days. Monsoon will hit the Kerala coast by May 30," DS Pai, head, long range forecast, <keyword id="6355166" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="India-Meteorological-Department">India Meteorological Department</keyword>, told the Economic Times. According to the <keyword id="57032" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Met-office">Met office</keyword>, conditions were conducive for the advancement of monsoon into Arabian sea, Maldives, Comorin area and some more parts of Bay of Bengal during next two days. GP Sharma, V-P-meteorology, Skymet Weather Services, said: "The monsoon progress has been stuck till Hambantota in <keyword id="2871404" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sri-Lanka-and-Bay-of-Bengal">Sri Lanka and Bay of Bengal</keyword> since the past few days. In the next 24-48 hours we can expect it to pick up," he said. Moreover, light rain and thunder showers continue to lash the southern part of India apart from the coastal belts of <keyword id="37102" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Andhra-Pradesh">Andhra Pradesh</keyword> and Karnataka. The monsoon would set in after 60% of the available 14 stations across Kerala, Karnataka, <keyword id="6355572" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sri-Lanka">Sri Lanka</keyword> and <keyword id="64287" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Lakshadweep">Lakshadweep</keyword> would report rainfall of 2.5 mm or more for two consecutive days, the weather office said. 
	 

	But people across north and central India would not get any relief from the hot winds till the weekend. "Heat wave conditions will continue with temperature 2-7 degree above normal over most parts of the country. Under the influence of a western disturbance, we can expect some light spell of rains along with thunderstorm over north India," said Sharma. People should be better prepared to face severe heat wave conditions in coming days at some places in Odisha, <keyword id="6360371" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jharkhand">Jharkhand</keyword>, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Vidarbha, <keyword id="6355554" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Madhya-Pradesh">Madhya Pradesh</keyword>, Telengana, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Chhattisgarh. 
	 

	The weather office also forecast fall in day temperatures by about 2°C over Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Vidarbha from May 28 onwards.
