<ul class="summary-list"><li>While watching the new season of "Heartstopper," I keep feeling jealous and angry. </li><li>The show celebrates queer love in high school, which is something I never experienced as a gay kid.</li></ul><p>Netflix's "Heartstopper" is a relatively simple story. There are no enemies to lovers, there is no unrequited love, and there is no big tragedy. It's merely about two teenage boys who fall in love. </p><p>So I never thought the second season would make me rethink my dating life as a <a href="https://www.insider.com/gay-man-had-sex-straight-soccer-players-lgbtq-2023-5">gay man</a> and my childhood <a href="https://www.insider.com/my-former-college-classmate-convicted-murder-trauma-2023-4">trauma</a>.</p><p>Although the show can be cringe and sanitized at times, I can't help but find myself beaming with excitement at some of the scenes. Under all that excitement though, there is something else. I'm also feeling jealous, angry, and frustrated while watching this show.</p><p>It reminds me of all the things I'm missing out on when it comes to <a href="https://www.insider.com/forced-into-conversion-therapy-kid-lgbtq-gay-2023-5">queer love</a>.</p><h2>'Heartstopper' showcases a fantasy-like adolescence for queer kids that I was never lucky enough to experience</h2><p>In the show, Nick and Charlie have a whirlwind <a href="https://www.insider.com/fell-in-love-another-woman-fat-camp-2023-6">romance</a>. They kiss in secret during school hours, they text each other sweet nothings, and they are surrounded by queer friends who affirm them. </p><p>My middle and high school years in Long Island were nothing like that. For the most part, there were only a few openly gay guys in my entire school, and we mostly kept our distance from each other. I think we subconsciously knew that if we interacted, it would only underscore what made us so different. It would only bring more unwanted attention to us. </p><p>I watched my straight high school friends get in and out of relationships, go on dates, kiss in cars, and hold hands in the hallways. I was left out of all of that. I never got to experience any type of romantic relationship during my adolescence — as Nich and Charlie do in "Heartstopper." I can't help but feel jealous of that.</p><p>Of course, "Heartstopper" is a straight-washing of the queer experience and offers a dream-like example of adolescent romance, but I can't help but wonder why queers my age couldn't have had the same experience growing up. Instead, most of us were forced to hide and suppress who we are to protect ourselves from ridicule. </p><p>I missed out on high school romance, and this series rubs exactly what I was missing in my face. </p><h2>It's also been difficult to watch a show where the teens are more emotionally mature than the men I've had dates with recently</h2><p>Nick and Charlie have an alarmingly mature relationship. They communicate their feelings, work through their problems by talking them through, and they know exactly when and how to help each other. And they are teenagers. </p><p>When I was young, I was fine missing out on high school romances because I was promised "it gets better," and I convinced myself I would be able to have what everyone else had some time in the future. But I'm starting to see that it might, in fact, not get better.</p><p>Dating gay men in New York City is an endless pattern of men telling me they aren't ready to commit to anything serious. Or it's men who don't know how to communicate beyond a "What's up?" text at 1 AM. Or it's men who rather run in the opposite direction than face their feelings.</p><p>The fact that the teens in "Heartstopper" are more mature than the 30-something adults I go on dates with makes me frustrated. </p><p>I know I shouldn't compare my dating life to a fictional teen show, but the series poignantly highlights everything I'm missing out on.</p><h2>Ultimately, I'm glad the younger generations get this type of representation  </h2><p>When I was growing up, there were no shows like this on TV. If there was one queer character on a network series, they were usually a side character with no storyline and just punchlines.</p><p>I'm glad that queer kids today get to watch "Heartstopper" and see that it's OK to be out in school, it's OK to get a boyfriend, and it's OK to fall in love — just like most heterosexual high schoolers have been able to do forever.</p><p>I hope this show can teach kids what a healthy and mature relationship looks like and that it's possible for them too. I hope the next generation of queer people can live and love confidently — something I am still striving for.</p>

The comments arose <a href="https://www.them.us/story/heartstopper-kit-connor-deletes-twitter-queerbaiting-accusations-maia-reficco">after a video was published</a> showing Connor holding hands with "Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin" star Maia Reficco, prompting speculation they were dating.</p><p>Some fans accused the actor of being straight and taking a bisexual role away from a queer actor. Others also accused Connor of queerbaiting. However, as social media users <a href="https://twitter.com/eddiesbegin/status/1587224105853636608">have pointed out</a>, queerbaiting is a term used to describe fictional characters whom writers hint at being part of the LGBTQ+ community in order to attract queer audiences. </p><p>This is not the first time Connor has had to address fans commenting on his sexuality. And I just wanted you to know." </p><p>His breath is shaky, and there are tears in his eyes as he tries smiling through his nervousness. </p><p>In an outtake of this scene, Colman hugs Connor — just as she does in the final cut — but then pulls back with tears in her eyes and smiles at him. </p><p>"I can't remember my words," Colman says to Connor. "Business Proposal" is slightly more mature than "XO, Kitty," but it has the same goofy spirit — on top of, frankly, one of the hottest kisses (<a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hL59Hs7x5tI">spoilers</a>!) ever seen on television. Its 10 episodes are well-worth your time, if you're looking to while away a weekend with some delightful, soapy drama.</p><p>"Business Proposal" is streaming on Netflix.</p><h2>3. The stakes in "So Not Worth It" aren't particularly high, but if you're looking for a similarly diverse cast, school shenanigans, and laughs, it'd be a good one to check out.</p><p>"So Not Worth It" is streaming on Netflix.</p><h2>5. After breaking an expensive vase while looking for a quiet place to study, she's forced to pay back her debt by working for the school's host club — a group of idle young men who politely host and chatter with the school's girls. The twist? The host club members, by virtue of Haruhi's short hair and masculine clothing, assume she's a boy — and she begins working off her debt as a host before they realize she's not.</p><p><strong>Why you'll like it</strong>: The shenanigans on "XO, Kitty" are a delightful match for the rambunctious energy of 2000s anime comedy "Ouran High School Host Club." The show also features some thoughtful ruminations on gender and adolescent friendship — but at it's core, it's just a ton of fun.</p><p>"Ouran High School Host Club" is available to stream on Hulu and Crunchyroll.</p><h2>6. You don't have to watch all of "Grey's" to appreciate the brilliance of its early seasons — or to get sucked into the delightful, trope-y romance. That said, it's also quite a bit more mature than "XO, Kitty," and probably not a great bet if you can't stomach at least a bit of on-screen medicine.</p><p>"Grey's Anatomy" is streaming on Netflix.</p><h2><strong>7. Trump has denied any wrongdoing.</p><p>Turley said the indictment detailed specific instances of Trump's alleged misconduct.</p><p>"The special counsel knew that there would be a lot of people who were going to allege that the DOJ acted in a biased or politically motivated way. This is clearly an indictment that was drafted to answer those questions," Turley said. "It's overwhelming in details."</p><p>The Fox News commentator noted that the indictment included <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-showed-classified-docs-writer-member-of-pac-feds-allege-2023-6">direct quotations from Trump passed along by cooperating witnesses</a> testifying under oath.</p><p>"The Trump team should not fool itself," Turley said. "These are hits below the water line."</p><p>He noted in a separate segment on Fox News that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-hoarded-classified-documents-in-mar-a-lago-shower-indictment-2023-6">a photo showed classified documents stacked in a bathroom at Trump's Mar-A-Lago estate in Florida</a>.</p><p>"It's really breathtaking," Turley said. "Obviously, this is mishandling. Putting classified documents into ballrooms and bathrooms ... borders on the bizarre."</p><p>Turley warned that jurors would react strongly to seeing the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-classified-docs-indictment-mar-a-lago-photos-2023-6">photo evidence of Trump's alleged mishandling of the classified documents</a>.</p><p>It was a turnaround from Turley's appearance on Sean Hannity's show on Thursday night before the details of the indictment were released.</p><p>Turley told Hannity he was waiting to see what the indictment held, but said "if this indictment is basically a bunch of close calls, I think there's going to be a great deal of recriminations."</p><p>Turley even suggested Trump could use the trial as a boost for his campaign, selling his mugshot to whip up his supporters and vowing to self-pardon himself if he's re-elected.</p><p>But by Friday morning, Turley was sounding the alarm, saying the indictment posed a "serious threat."</p><p>Turley did try to strike a hopeful note, saying that indictments can be a "heart-stopper" but that they will often have "fallen apart" by trial.</p><p>But even so, Turley warned Trump's legal team: "This is not an indictment you can dismiss."</p>
