A startup called <keyword id="3785014" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Oxyent-Technologies">Oxyent Technologies</keyword> emerged as the winner of the recently concluded <keyword id="10875" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IBM">IBM</keyword> Smartcamp Challenge for <keyword id="3352540" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="healthtech-startups">healthtech startups</keyword> in the country. It is a hospital-linked application and a one-stop workflow solution for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Pediatrics Department to assimilate and disseminate child information, starting from birth up to 12 years of age. 
 The challenge, a part of IBM’s Global Entrepreneur program, was to identify <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword> in the B2B and B2C space in India who are poised to redefine the healthcare industry and solve real world problems through their technology innovations. 
 
“IBM Smartcamps are designed and aimed at providing opportunities for startups to get mentorship and work with IBM and industry experts to scale up their business quickly, particularly by taking advantage of cognitive and cloud-based technologies. The focus of IBM Smartcamp for Health Tech initiative was to provide the startups in healthcare an opportunity to showcase their products and get inputs first-hand from various stakeholders,” said Seema Kumar, Country Manager, Ecosystem Development, IBM India &amp; SA. “At IBM, we are committed to empowering the next generation of start-ups that develop solutions to solve the most complex problems in the country. We are bullish on the potential of the Indian startup ecosystem to make effective use of technology to rapidly transform and improve the quality of healthcare solutions in the country.” 
 
Meanwhile, Harpreet Singh, the founder of the winning startup Oxyent Technologies, said, "Enterprise technologies like IoT, cloud computing, big data and analytics are a pillar to our solution. As a startup getting technical mentoring from IBM mentors in utilizing best practices in IoT and building on knowledge base of Watson will provide us an opportunity to be a world-class solution provider in child healthcare.” 
 
Two other startups - UE LifeSciences and DailyRounds - were selected as the first and second runners-up of the challenge. 
 
UE LifeSciences’ flagship product, iBreastExam is a portable, radiation-free device that can be used anywhere. The device essentially performs bilateral breast examinations and claims to provide results under five minutes. It accurately detects lesions with a sensitivity higher than 85% without causing any pain and has a low false-alarm rate of 6%. 
 
Meanwhile, DailyRounds is a mobile app for doctors, medical schools, physician, and surgeon societies to publish clinical cases, articles, and images. The platform allows doctors to share insights about medical cases. It claims to provide a verified diagnosis within 24 hours of submission. It also functions as a medical case library for doctors to refer and discuss their cases. 
 
The winners were chosen after multiple levels of screenings and panel rounds by the jury members. They were judged on various parameters like innovative solution, features &amp; demos, ability to scale, team behind the product, and the market size they are addressing with their solution.

The top 3 startups of IBM’s Smartcamp Healthtech challenge

<ul class="summary-list"><li>We attended the Bits&amp;Pretzels Healthtech conference for startups and VCs.</li><li>They named drug discovery and the emerging 'techbio' sector as areas of interest.</li></ul>COVID-19 fueled huge interest in health-tech startups, with VCs <a href="https://app.dealroom.co/transactions.rounds/f/industries/anyof_health/regions/anyof_Europe?showStats=YEAR&amp;statsType=rounds" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pouring a record $25.1 billion</a> into health and biotech startups in 2021.The sector experienced a subsequent slowdown, in line with broader pall in startup funding. But in 2023, health-tech startups are faring well compared to their counterparts in fintech and climate. We went to the Bits&amp;Pretzels Healthtech in Munich, Germany, and spoke with investors, founders, and operators from across Europe.Here are some of their takeaways for the future of health startups and innovation. <h2>1. 'Techbio' is a priority </h2>Techbio (not to be confused with its sister discipline, biotech) is the meeting point between technology and biology. The idea is to innovate the ways in which hardware and software can speed up processes such as the discovery of new drugs, or streamlining the collection of data in drug trials. While biotech is research-based, techbio focuses on the application of technology and engineering to bring this research to market.Startups in the space are bringing new applications of tech to fields <a href="https://www.mills-reeve.com/insights/publications/techbio-%E2%80%93-evolution-or-revolution" target="_blank" rel="noopener">such as drug discovery, bioengineering, and patient care</a>. It's a pretty nascent field, but 95% of the VCs Insider spoke to had techbio on their agenda for the coming year. It points to sustained appetite for digitizing many of the processes in the pharma industry, which many investors see as an untapped opportunity. <h2>2. VCs are still betting on drug discovery </h2>Even though funding into drug discovery startups has significantly stalled this year, <a href="https://app.dealroom.co/transactions.rounds/f/regions/anyof_Europe/tags/anyof_drug%20development?showStats=YEAR&amp;statsType=rounds" target="_blank" rel="noopener">at just $126 million,</a> startup valuations have picked up since 2022.Drug discovery is a process which aims to develop new medications and therapeutics.Startups have been deploying AI to streamline the development of drugs for about a decade, and the space is building up traction with investors. VCs are bullish that a well-calculated bet on certain drug discovery upstarts could generate lucrative exits and returns, especially via <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/e03d746c-e74c-4e95-8d12-d1edef2880d7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Big Pharma companies</a>.<h2>3. AI can be a game changer — but not everyone needs to deploy it </h2>Despite the huge uptick in interest since the release of OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot, artificial intelligence wasn't necessarily top of every investor's agenda.Many VCs agreed that AI has potential to transform healthcare, especially in streamlining admin tasks for health workers, to speeding up the diagnostics process. But many are also aware that any use of AI would be accompanied by stringent regulation, given the potential to misuse confidential patient data. Many of Europe's top investors were also cautious about startups applying AI for the sake of it, a time and cost-intensive process. <h2>4. Health data is a gold mine </h2>Clinical data has always been important, but a wave of startups have started to monetize their collection of this data — and VCs are looking to cash in. Clinical data is the umbrella term for data gathered during clinical trials, as well as during the delivery of care for patients.One gap identified by founders is that pharma companies <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-pharmaceuticals-data-idUSKCN1GD4MM" target="_blank" rel="noopener">are struggling to acquire data</a> on clinical trials and drug candidates.As AI can't wholly replace the clinical trials process, startups are tapping into a potentially lucrative market, and VCs were very enthused by these emerging players.<h2>5. Health-tech VCs won't splurge cash</h2>While COVID-19 did give healthtech startups a chance at the spotlight, they were still overshadowed by their counterparts <a href="https://sifted.eu/articles/european-tech-2021-data" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in fintech and software-as-a-service</a>. Part of the reason was that health-tech VCs, by their own accord, did not splurge as lavishly as other specialist investors. That's changing a little as early-stage healthtech startups are leading the race, nabbing $550 million — <a href="https://app.dealroom.co/transactions.rounds/f/growth_stages/anyof_seed/industries/anyof_health/regions/anyof_Europe/years/anyof_2023?showStats=YEAR&amp;statsType=rounds" target="_blank" rel="noopener">double the amount of funding as fintech startups</a> — in 2023 so far. Still, healthtech VC say they are mostly standing by their prudent approach amid a tumultuous tech market.

Drug discovery and 'techbio': What Europe's health startup investors are betting on in 2023

Babylon Ali Parsa, chief executive of Babylon, is said to have attended the meeting <ul class="summary-list"><li>UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and health minister Matt Hancock held a meeting with healthcare startups, big tech firms, and major healthcare players on Tuesday to discuss how they could help tackle the coronavirus pandemic. </li><li>Unicorn healthcare firm Babylon and blood-testing company Thriva, two of the UK's most prominent healthtech startups, sat alongside representatives from Amazon, Boots and Swiss healthcare firm Roche. </li><li>Hamish Grierson, CEO of Thriva, attended the roundtable. The British healthtech sector is significant, with close to 4,000 companies producing a combined annual turnover of £24 billion ($28 billion), according to the <a href="https://www.abhi.org.uk/">Association of British Healthtech Industries</a>. In a meeting attended by Prime Minister Boris Johnson and health secretary Matt Hancock on Tuesday, executives from Amazon, Boots and Swiss healthcare firm Roche were joined by two of the UK's most prominent healthtech startups, Babylon and Thriva. According to Hamish Grierson, chief executive and founder of Thriva, which offers customers at-home blood tests, those present offered the government suggestions on how they could help scale up the number of coronavirus tests available to the public. At present, only around 5,000 are being tested in the UK every day. Speaking to Business Insider, Grierson said the meeting left him feeling industry leaders were "stepping up to the plate", adding that increasing the number of coronavirus tests was a clear priority for the government. "Given our speciality is getting tests out to people at scale, we thought there could be a role for us," he said. "There's no concrete next step for us at the moment - but we are actively assessing how we can be most useful to the government moving forward." He said Ali Parsa, chief executive of Babylon Health, which offers a chatbot service allowing users to check their symptoms against NHS recommendations, attended the roundtable.The meeting followed a similar gathering of UK tech leaders, convened by the PM's chief advisor Dominic Cummings, last week. One senior tech entrepreneur present at that meeting, who spoke to Business Insider on the condition of anonymity, said Cummings appeared to have "a very clear sense of purpose" with regards to the role healthtech could play in the NHS in the future. "By the time the dust has settled on all this, I think we will have had a major rethink of how technology is deployed within our health service," they said. "I think Cummings knows how to turn a crisis into an opportunity." When approached by Business Insider, Babylon wouldn't say if it had attended the Westminster meeting on Tuesday, but said it had been "approached by many governments and health authorities" to help combat coronavirus. The firm added: "These are not simple decisions and each government is deciding for itself how companies can best help."<h2>UK healthtech startups see a surge in interest</h2>PatchworkPatchwork founders Jing Ouyang and Anas Nader.Meanwhile three other emerging players in the British healthtech sector - Patchwork, Pando and Nye Health - reported surges in demand and an outpouring of goodwill from commercial partners.Alexander Finlayson, chief exec at Nye, which provides encrypted communications tech for doctors to communicate with patients remotely, said their cybersecurity and digital infrastructure partners had significantly cut their rates. "They offered to reduce their costs just because they know we're responding to a crisis," he told Business Insider. "It's extraordinary." Finlayson said the firm was signing new partnerships with NHS trusts and hospitals "every hour", with an estimated user growth rate of 25% per week. Dr Anas Nader, co-founder and CEO of Patchwork, which helps locum doctors pick up shifts at short-staffed hospitals, said new technologies were being rapidly integrated into the NHS in order to deal with the pandemic. "In healthcare, it can sometimes take months or years for things to change," he said. "But now we're seeing technology being adopted in a matter of days and weeks." Patchwork is currently used by 32 healthcare institutions in the UK, a figure that looks set to rise rapidly. Nader said: "We've seen some increase in demand. It's early days yet, but I think we're going to start seeing the impact this will have on staff numbers in the coming weeks." Philip Mundy, cofounder of Pando, a communications app connecting more than 40,000 medical professionals across the country, said he had "never before seen so much collaboration".Pando acts as a kind of "WhatsApp for doctors", meaning they can sign up with their NHS emails and have one-to-one and group conversations with their colleagues at their own institution and across the country, allowing them share to new information and best practice. He told Business Insider: "It's no exaggeration to say we've seen more demand in the last two weeks than we had in the previous 12 months." Boris Johnson met with healthtech startups Babylon and Thriva to discuss scaling up coronavirus testing

Neeraj Joshi, CEO of Thingsmeet Solutions, zeroed down on <keyword id="2094" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pune">Pune</keyword> when he first decided to set up a health-tech venture, not only because of the time he had spent in the city as the centre head for Infosys or his network of contacts there. Another huge reason behind his choice of place was the easy availability of the kind of talent that he wanted. 
 
"A lot of tech companies like Infosys and Syntel have their healthcare vertical headquartered here, so there is a lot of talent available," Joshi told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/pune-is-new-hub-for-health-tech-startups/articleshow/53201409.cms">ET</a>. "Also institutes like Symbiosis Institute of Health Sciences and Ashtang Ayurveda ensure access to experts with domain knowledge and expertise." 
 
It was only last month that Govin Capital, headquartered in Singapore, announced a health-tech accelerator in Pune, with its CEO Anand Govindaluri saying, "Pune has the best start-up ecosystem because of the natural presence of good medical, engineering and management schools. There is a natural flow of talent that is automatically attracted to Pune, and so identifying management teams for start-ups with diverse backgrounds is also easier." 
 Pune has seen a lot of <keyword id="3492724" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health-tech-start-ups">health-tech start-ups</keyword> rising in the past few years, with companies like Medsonway, which delivers medicines, Docplexus, a doctor's network, Allizhealth, which lets you store your health data, and Medifee, which provides pricing information on tests and hospital procedures, all being founded here. 
 
"There is a lot of noise in other cities; we wanted to do our groundwork and Pune provided the best environment to do that and stay under the radar. Pune lacks investor attention, but its better this way - it helps companies focus on the basics and bootstrap. Investors will get involved only when they really want to invest," said Abhijit Gupta, CEO of Praxify Technologies. 
 
However, Anurav Rane, CEO of Planmymedicaltrip.com, a medical tourism portal, says that the lack of access to investors is a major problem when it comes to Pune. 
 
"Pune is a technology hub but the start-up ecosystem needs to improve. What works for it, however, are factors like proximity to Mumbai, and for us, a large out of-town population of students and professionals, which helps create demand for our services," he said. 
 
Abhimanyu Bhosale, CEO of Live Health, is of the opinion that along with easy access to talent because of the educational and tech presence that Pune offers, several other factors like the quality of life and cost of living also make Pune substantial. 
 
"The high cost of talent in other cities like Bengaluru can make it difficult to find the right people if you are a start-up. Though Pune lacks investor support, it's not as commercialised, making it easier to manage the cost of operations, management and travel," he added.

'The toxicity you introduced into the workplace ends now': A health-tech startup just ousted its founder for treating employees poorly

Innovaccer cofounder and CEO <keyword id="3561958" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="abhinav-shashank" source="Orion">Abhinav Shashank</keyword> cited an "uncertain macroeconomic environment" as the reason behind the job cuts, according to an internal mail sent to employees and accessed by leading startup news portal Inc42. "Innovaccer has always believed in empowering its customers to accelerate their transformations, leading to higher quality care for patients and populations, improved patient experiences, and better financial and operational performance," <keyword id="3452" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shashank" source="Orion">Shashank</keyword> was quoted as saying in the email. The startup said it will provide severance packages to affected employees, as well as transitional health insurance benefits and job placement assistance. Healthtech unicorn Innovaccer lays off 245 workers, 2nd job cut in 5 months

And when it comes to healthcare data, the importance of data privacy only increases. India has been toying with the idea of a healthcare data privacy bill since 2018, but it hasn’t come into effect yet. In March 2018, the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that it plans to set up a nodal body called National Digital Health Authority, that would enforce privacy and security measures for electronic health data in India. However, while the setting up of the regulatory body is awaited, there are multiple healthtech startups out there today with millions of users that have access to medical records. Recently, healthcare platform Practo released a report on India’s healthcare map citing “key consumer healthcare trends, concerns and behaviour.” The report was generated from the doctors appointment bookings made through their platform. An official statement from the company said the report was made “of hundreds of thousands of searches and appointments, by over 13 crore patients, across 50+ cities and 250+ specialities, in 2018.” But doesn’t that put the privacy of a patient at risk? Experts don't believe so as the anonymity of the user is still in place. Varun Dubey, VP, Marketing at Practo spoke to Business Insider and said “We feel this data itself is powerful as it shows the healthcare trends in the country. There is a real need for conversation around the issues in the sector,” he said. It’s similar to when Google releases a report about what people are searching for, it is quite generic as well as anonymised, he added. Experts from the healthcare industry too stress on the importance of such reports. “If without sharing the name of the individual, if the remaining quantifiable and quality data is shared for the purpose of innovation, I don’t think it’s a bad thing. It's like a necessary evil for the greater good of mankind,” Dr. Siddhant Bhargava, Co-founder, Fitness &amp; Nutritional Scientist - Food Darzee told Business Insider. So how does Practo, a company which has about 2.5 crore patients booking appointments through them, keep the data safe? “We have cared and given importance to data security and privacy for years now. Probably, we are the only ISO 27000 certified company in healthtech. As we work in other countries too, we don’t have to just comply with Indian laws but across many other countries. We have a lot of external and internal audits that take place. Our servers are Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (hipaa) compliant, even though India doesn’t need one. We also have a 256 bit encryption code, which is much stronger than security codes in Indian banks,” said Dubey. The Health Ministry is also looking to bring about a strict <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/economy-policy/india-to-be-first-to-protect-health-data-of-citizens-with-iron-clad-law-118053100126_1.html">law</a> that would give individuals the ownership of their data. It is the “consumer ownership” of data that makes the law important. While Dubey believes that not just healthcare but data privacy overall is utmost important, he said that the bill is moving towards giving more power to the consumer. Other healthcare startups too agree. Tushar Vashisht, co-founder and CEO of Healthifyme, said that it is the government’s mandate to figure out how strict the norms should be. “I would personally ask for the consumer to be king. They should define how they want to control or secure their data,” Vashisht told Business Insider. India has millions of medical records online but no law to keep the data safe

Read on for more. </li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.</a></li></ul>Early in her career in healthcare, <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/anurati">Anurati Mathur</a> started thinking that the US system's approach to costs was all wrong. Then she had a personal brush with it at the pharmacy counter. Mathur went to pick up a prescription, but it turned out to be prohibitively expensive. So instead of purchasing it, she left it there. The pharmacy kept calling her, telling her that the prescription was ready. But "you're not really addressing the root cause of why I'm not getting the prescription, which is cost," she says. That's the driving ambition behind health-tech startup <a href="https://www.semprehealth.com/">Sempre Health,</a> which Mathur co-founded at the end of 2015 with <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/swarajbanerjee/">Swaraj Banerjee</a>, a onetime Zynga engineer. Mathur, 30, is now Sempre's CEO and Banerjee, 29, is its chief technology officer. (The two married last year.)Sempre has raised $10.5 million in its seed and Series A rounds, and its valuation hasn't been disclosed. The startup isn't currently fundraising, so the pitch deck is a "starting point" for conversations with any investor, Mathur said. The pitch deck, which was provided by Sempre, is new and will be the basis for those conversations moving forward.Sempre takes aim at a well-known problem with people and their pills: that they don't always take them. Nearly 4 billion prescriptions are written in the US each year, but one in five are never filled, and about half of those remaining aren't taken properly, one <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/66/wr/mm6645a2.htm#contribAff">2017 report</a> found. The reasons behind those stats are complex, according to that report, shaped by factors like difficulty paying, patients forgetting or not understanding how to properly take a medication, and more. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Sempre Health</div></div></div>Sempre gives patients a discount if they pick up their prescription at the pharmacy more quickly. The startup has so far brought down a patient's share of costs by about 45% on average, if they pick up their prescription within six days.Sempre communicates with patients largely via text messages, letting them know about the discounts and when they're available. That tech is crucial, the startup says, because people read and respond to texts quickly, and don't want to download an app. Mathur and <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/kylewildnauerhaigney/">Kyle Wildnauer-Haigney</a>, Sempre's vice president of business development, used to work together at kidney dialysis giant DaVita. "From our firsthand experience, when you ask a patient who has a million other things to worrry about and should worry about to download an app- we wanted to make it really as lightweight as possible," Wildnauer-Haigney said. Money for the discounts comes from big-name pharma companies like Bristol-Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly, Johnson &amp; Johnson, and AstraZeneca. The companies would otherwise use the funds for drug coupons, an industry which gives <a href="https://www.pcmanet.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/pr-dated-07-14-12-visante-copay-coupon-study.pdf">$4 billion</a> a year to patients.Sempre is just getting started convincing health plans and employers to sign on. Participants include large regional Blue Cross and Blue Shield health plans and WellCare, with 16,000 patients under contract so far. Sempre expects to have 30,000 by this summer. About 20 to 30 drugs are eligible for the discounts, for chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes. Drugmaker coupons are <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2018/05/09/609150868/why-cant-medicare-patients-use-drugmakers-discount-coupons">illegal</a> for government programs like Medicare, so that population may not be eligible for Sempre.The health insurer and hospital system University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, which covers <a href="https://www.upmc.com/about/facts/numbers">3.5 million individuals </a>with its insurance products, is another participant. UPMC uses the discounts for four drugs - three blood thinners and one diabetes drug - with interest in an expansion to cover more drugs. UMPC has seen the program improve how much patients take their medications. For instance, in the first year of use for the <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/sempre-health-and-upmc-health-plan-expand-program-that-improves-affordability-and-adherence-for-critical-medications-300768200.html">blood thinner Brilinta,</a>which can lower the chance of an individual having another heart attack, more than 90% of prescription fills were done on time, and 95% of members took their prescriptions as intended more than 80% of the time. "The thing I really like about it is the proactive nature of it. Think about it: People are really busy in their lives. Sometimes, with the best of intentions, you just don't get your refills on time," <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/chronis-manolis-a1101ba/">Chronis Manolis</a>, senior vice president of pharmacy and chief pharmacy officer at UPMC, told Business Insider. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Sempre HealthAnurati Mathur is CEO and cofounder of Sempre Health.</div></div></div>The startup plans to expand to new health insurers next. And as the Trump administration weighs getting rid of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pharma-ceos-on-trumps-rebate-plan-effect-on-drug-prices-2019-2">drug rebates</a> in certain government programs, Sempre is billing its service as a potential solution, calling that a big opportunity. There are rivals, including drug discount companies like GoodRx and <a href="https://www.blinkhealth.com/">Blink Health</a>, and industry giants like <a href="https://www.mckesson.com/">McKesson</a>, which runs copay coupon programs. Health-tech company <a href="https://mpulsemobile.com/solutions-overview/pharmacy/">mPulse Mobile</a> also uses text messages to get patients to take meds on time. But the next wave of public healthcare companies looks to be on the horizon.At least two healthcare companies are considering public-market debuts in the not-so-distant future. The diabetes startup <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/exclusive-omada-health-confidentially-filed-s1-ipo-public-2024-10">Omada Health confidentially filed its S-1 this summer</a>. And the physical-therapy startup <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hinge-health-s-1-morgan-stanley-ipo-2024-9">Hinge Health has hired banks including Barclays</a> as it prepares to file its S-1 confidentially.Hinge and Omada likely aren't the only healthcare companies <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/healthcare-startups-ipo-public-markets-reopens-2024-1">weighing an IPO as market conditions improve</a>.Jon Swope, a managing director in Barclays' healthtech division, told me he expects a pickup in healthcare IPOs in 2025 after a three-year drought.<div type="image" title="A headshot of Jon Swope." height="1200" width="846" msid="114356715" hostid="261" sizebytes="24914"></div>I spoke with him about what the next wave of healthcare IPOs could bring — and which healthcare startups are in the best position to test the public markets.The following has been edited for clarity and length.In the past few years there have been a number of take-privates and near-delistings in healthcare, as well as plenty of healthcare companies that have otherwise struggled in the public markets. What can we learn from those companies' challenges, and how might they impact the next round of healthcare IPOs?The whipsaw of the public markets over the last five years has created a challenging backdrop, even with the overall market improving.From 2019 through 2021, nearly 20 companies went public through IPOs or SPACs in healthtech. At its peak, the total market cap for healthtech and digital health was over $300 billion. Through both take-privates and declines in share prices, that's down to just about $90 billion.Large take-privates like Change Healthcare, Nuance, Cerner, Inovalon, and others are part of the story. The other part is that, on average, the companies that went public or were already public are down by about 80% — names like Teladoc, Accolade, and Health Catalyst.The enthusiasm that supported the last wave, with respect to the positive and innovative business models in healthtech and digital health, is not gone. It's just that these companies haven't been able to achieve growth with profitability. When there's a next set, there's going to be more of a focus on growth and profitability.You see that in the IPOs that happened this year: Waystar and Tempus. Waystar is large-scale, profitable, with growth, and Tempus has the promise of AI, high growth, and emerging profitability. Both have performed since their public debut.In the private sphere, many investors have leaned away from healthcare services and into healthcare AI. What models do you expect the healthcare market to favor in this next round of IPOs?There are three general categories that are investible in healthtech and digital healthcare. One is simply data and then technology and healthcare. Healthcare is arguably two decades behind every other industry in the adoption of technology. Whether it's software, tech-enabled models, or, importantly, the data opportunity and AI opportunity, tech and data infrastructure for healthcare is No. 1.No. 2 is consumer-centric models, such as some B2B2C models, the employer and payer digital-health models, or even direct-to-consumer models. Look at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-hims-founders-journey-to-go-public-via-spac-2021-1">the performance of Hims</a>, which has emerged from its post-SPAC purgatory.Consumer-centric healthcare is the future of healthcare, and it's becoming more of our collective reality. The companies with consumer-centric business models that deliver longitudinal engagement and outcomes, financial and clinical, for consumers and the payers of healthcare, both employers and insurance companies, are certainly on the list.No. 3 is value-based care. Much has been made of that as a category, tying together costs and outcomes. And while some of the brick-and-mortar value-based care companies have had their own challenges, support for the adoption of value-based care by providers will continue to be where healthcare is going.Are there models in healthcare that you think are perhaps not the best fit for the public markets right now?The less complex the elevator pitch, the better. While I can't say there's a model that's not a fit, what we heard from investors as things were bending in the wrong direction last boom cycle was: "Wait, what did I just buy? I'm not sure I fully understand this company's business model."Now you have to juxtapose that against the reality of healthcare, which is complex. So it's companies that can articulate a clear and simple story while also navigating the layers of the healthcare ecosystem in executing on their business model.That includes riding the existing rails. In the last five-plus years we've seen companies figuring out how to work with the payers and providers that make up the healthcare ecosystem to bring innovation and disruption to how we experience healthcare.Given the major slowdown in SPAC deals in the past few years and Nuvo's poor performance (<a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-08-22/newly-public-pregnancy-care-firm-nuvo-files-for-bankruptcy">and bankruptcy</a>) this year, could we see more SPAC deals for healthcare startups next year?It's a four-letter word for the foreseeable future. I imagine there will be SPACs created, and there are still others that haven't run out of time, but it's unlikely that we see companies using that vehicle that could go public the regular way.For startups that don't go public, will we see M&amp;A pick up in 2025? With large retailers like Walmart pulling away from healthcare, who are the potential buyers?M&amp;A is picking up already, as evidenced by volume this year, and it will continue to, particularly in an easing financing environment and macro backdrop where bid-ask spreads are narrowing.The consolidation activity is in three categories. First, there are the large-cap consolidators including retailers, payers, and Big Tech. There will be deals there, but there are only so many that will be done by that group, which is not much more than a dozen companies.The next is large-cap, and often private-equity-backed, healthtech consolidators. A number of them are private and will continue to be buyers.The third category is just smaller mergers of equals. Especially for enterprise sales, selling into payers or selling to providers, scale matters, and so size matters. We'll see small companies merge with other small companies to get there.Anything else startups should know that might impact this next cycle of IPOs?While these companies that went public in the last cycle may not have fulfilled their promises, they set the stage for an attractive IPO market by going public the right way — executing on the business and growing it, and increasing awareness around the company well in advance of an IPO.At the back end of the last boom wave there was a rush to go public, and SPACs were examples of that. I think that in the 2025, 2026, and 2027 IPO classes, there will be a number of companies that think about it the right way, not rushing to get to the public market.

2025 could bring a wave of healthcare IPOs. Here's what startups should know, according to a top banker.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Economic uncertainty has led to a wave of layoffs in the tech industry.</li><li>After the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2021-has-been-a-record-breaking-year-for-venture-capital-2021-12">2021 boom</a> in venture capital investing, startups are cutting costs and slashing jobs.</li></ul>Economists may still be debating whether or not the US is entering a recession, but for the tech industry, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-layoffs-thousands-of-workers-lose-jobs-economic-crash-2022-11">pullback is fully underway.</a> Layoffs have dominated headlines since the end of 2022, with big tech giants like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-layoffs-jobs-alphabet-work-employees-staff-sundar-pichai-2023-1">Google,</a> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-layoffs-employees-facebook-mark-zuckerberg-metaverse-bet-2022-11">Meta</a>, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-laying-off-17000-workers-largest-job-cut-tech-report-2023-1">Amazon</a> all announcing job cuts of thousands of employees. The startup world has taken a huge hit as well: According to data from Layoffs.fyi, US startups — categorized as companies that have raised at least seed funding and up to Series J funding — laid off over 3,000 employees in January. Layoff totals for some companies were not available. By contrast, in January 2022, only about 180 startup employees faced layoffs. That's about a 1,700% jump in job eliminations year-over-year — a stark illustration of how the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/great-hesitation-amazon-meta-alphabet-preparing-for-recession-2022-10">economic outlook in tech</a> has shifted over the course of the past 12 months.Many of these companies raised large sums of venture capital funding before the market pullback. While 2021 was a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2021-has-been-a-record-breaking-year-for-venture-capital-2021-12">record-breaking year</a> for venture capital investing, 2022 saw a sharp decline in dealmaking towards the end of the year, and many startups have struggled to raise more funds.This has contributed to the wave of cost cutting throughout the industry. In the first month of 2023, 62 US startups laid off staff. US startups laid off more than 3,000 workers in January — a 1,700% jump from the same month last year

During the difficult months of lockdown, many healthcare professionals conducted nonemergency appointments remotely to protect their patients and prevent COVID from spreading even further. With lockdowns lifted and restrictions easing, the use of telehealth platforms continues to grow. According to a 2021 <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/healthcare-systems-and-services/our-insights/telehealth-a-quarter-trillion-dollar-post-covid-19-reality">McKinsey</a> report, over 40% of patients who responded to the survey indicated they would keep using telehealth solutions in a post-pandemic world, and up to 60% of respondents said they would consider adopting "broader virtual-health solutions."Fifth-generation mobile networks, or 5G, are key to enabling a range of healthtech solutions. Their improved connectivity, throughput, and latency will allow medical practitioners to monitor medicine, equipment, and patients from anywhere at any time of the day, according to Sergio Budkin, the director of market development at Virgin Media O2 Business, a London-based telecommunications company."These use cases will save valuable clinician time, meaning they can complete rounds more efficiently," Budkin said, adding that they "reduce expensive waste of medicines and equipment, freeing up budget to be spent elsewhere" and allow IT teams to "support a range of hospitals within a trust from one location."<h2>5G telehealth solutions are in practice</h2>In July, Virgin Media O2 Business teamed up with the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, a mental-health-services provider, to open Britain's first 5G-connected hospital. There, a private 5G network powers everything from smart medical storage to e-observations. The hospital will also conduct trials with technologies like the Internet of Things, augmented and virtual reality, and artificial intelligence to improve operations and caregiving. "These include 5G-connected e-observations; connected smart devices and smart monitoring; AR- and VR-enabled headsets to support collaboration between clinicians on complex cases and AI-powered heat mapping to track patient movement through hospitals," Budkin said.On the way to the emergency room, paramedics could diagnose patients and perform lifesaving treatments inside 5G-connected ambulances. "It's something we showed was possible with the <a href="https://www.ericsson.com/en/cases/2020/the-5g-connected-ambulance">UK's first 5G-enabled remote-diagnostic procedure</a>, where a clinician located miles away was able to guide a paramedic remotely through a diagnostic procedure using VR," Blessing Makumbe, the vice president and head of digital services of the UK and Ireland at Ericsson, said. At a time when hospitals are overstretched and understaffed due to COVID hospitalizations, Makumbe said how such 5G applications are "enabling crucial efficiencies and reducing the need for some patients to visit A&amp;E," or the accident-and-emergency department.<h2>5G will have an impact on health-related data and accessibility</h2>Adopting 5G technology will also facilitate a greater stream of medical data, allowing doctors to diagnose and treat patients faster than ever before. Chris Johnson, the head of enterprise at Nokia, said that "patients will benefit from improved support and care coordination as in the future, information flow will be streamlined due to access to new mobile apps and remote devices."Sanjiv Gossain, the group vice president and head of EMEA at Verizon Business, said that 5G technology will help the healthcare industry solve some of its biggest challenges. These include treating growing populations, closing skill gaps, complying with stringent regulations, and safeguarding patient data.But where 5G will likely have the biggest impact on healthcare is accessibility. Gossain told Insider that technologies such as private 5G networks have the potential to transform how medical professionals deliver healthcare by "empowering professionals, sharing intelligence, and improving the quality of care they provide."<h2>5G use is increasing in health services</h2>More companies are joining the effort to make healthcare more accessible through 5G technology. Joe Drygas, the vice president of healthcare solutions at AT&amp;T, said that 5G will allow even more people to access healthcare globally. High-speed, low-latency connection from 5G can help make the experience effective and personalized."5G-enabled devices like wearables promise to boost the accuracy of healthcare, too. Andrew Morawski, the senior vice president and general manager at Oracle Communications, said wearables will allow medical practitioners to monitor patient vitals, see how patients react to drugs in clinical trials, detect if someone falls, and much more. "A 5G-enabled patient-monitoring device, for instance, can send real-time information straight to the healthcare provider on a private and secure network so they can react quickly should a crisis arise and also see historical trends in data to help create the best course of treatment for that individual patient," he said.<h2>There's still room for improvement in the 5G space</h2>While many experts believe that 5G offers endless potential in healthcare, some acknowledge that there are obstacles to overcome. Andre Kindness, a principal analyst at Forrester, said the 5G industry has a range of challenges to overcome before it can meaningfully impact healthcare.Kindness said that 5G is "struggling to be added to end devices outside laptops, phones, and tablets" and can be expensive for companies to implement. "The cost of deploying and managing the infrastructure has to come down significantly to be in the same realm as WiFi," Kindness said. "The 5G industry needs to ramp up the number of professionals that know how to set up and manage 5G environments."While cost and infrastructural challenges remain, 5G technology has already begun to transform healthtech and patient care.
